An enhanced Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model for the detection of lung cancer using X-Ray image

Lung Cancer is a life-threatening disease which can be diagnosed by Medical Imaging such as X-Ray, MRI, CT Scan etc. This research presented an enhanced model using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to detect lung cancer using X-Ray image. Medical image processing relies heavily on the diagnosis of lung cancer images. It aids doctors in determining the correct diagnosis and management. For many patients, lung cancer ranks among the mostdeadly diseases. Many lives can be saved if cancerous growth is diagnosed early. The purported model was predominantly built on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture and the model was built with enhanced features such as Image Enhancement, Segmenting ROI (Region of Interest), Features Extraction and Nodule Classification. In preprocessing stage, the AMF (Adaptive Median Filter) filtering method was applied to eliminate noise in X-Ray image of the dataset, and quality of X-Ray image was improved with the support of CLAHE (Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization). Secondly, K-means Clustering algorithm was used to extract the relevant feature or Region of Interest (ROI) of the lung field automatically i.e. the model was effectively trained to identify and crop the exact location of the lung field automatically. The model was able to classify the cancer nodule as either Cancerous or Non-Cancerous. The framework worked on C# platform, and used EMGU for detection of the tumour in the lung xray image. Experimental result showed that the developed system was able to detect Lung Cancer with 90.77% accuracy, 86.65% precision and 95.31% Recall/Sensitivity.

Developing a hybrid model with multiview learning for acoustic classification of Atlantic herring schools

AbstractAdvances in active acoustic technology have outpaced the ability to process and analyze the data in a timely manner. Currently, scientists rely on manual scrutiny or limited automation to translate acoustic backscatter to biologically meaningful metrics useful for fisheries and ecosystem management. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Northeast Fisheries Science Center has monitored the Atlantic herring population in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank since 1999 due to the stocks' important economic and ecological role for the commercial lobster industry. Manual scrutinization to identify Atlantic herring schools from the water column sonar data is time‐consuming and impractical for large‐scale studies. To automate this process, a hybrid model with multiview learning was proposed for automatic Atlantic herring school detection, which consists of two steps: (1) region‐of‐interest (ROI) detection and (2) ROI classification. The ROI detection step was designed to detect school‐like objects, and the ROI classification step was designed to distinguish Atlantic herring schools from other objects. The co‐training algorithm was employed for multiview learning as well as semi‐supervised learning. Within this framework, single‐view vs. multiview learning and supervised vs. semi‐supervised learning were evaluated and compared. Our results showed that multiview learning can improve the performance of the hybrid model in Atlantic herring school detection, and the utilization of unlabeled data is also helpful when the training set is small. The best‐performed model achieved an F1‐score of 0.804. This new framework provides an efficient and effective tool for automatic Atlantic herring school detection.

The Automated Detection of Fusarium Wilt on Phalaenopsis Using VIS-NIR and SWIR Hyperspectral Imaging

Phalaenopsis, an essential flower for export, is significantly affected by fusarium wilt, which impacts its export quality. Hyperspectral imaging technology offers the potential to detect fusarium wilt on Phalaenopsis. The goal of this study was to establish an automated platform for the rapid detection of fusarium wilt on Phalaenopsis. In this research, the automatic target generation process (ATGP) method was employed to identify outliers in the hyperspectral spectrum. Subsequently, the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) method was utilized to detect signals similar to the outliers. To suppress background noise and extract the region of interest (ROI), the Constrained Energy Minimization (CEM) method was implemented. For ROI classification and detection, a deep neural network (DNN), a support vector machine (SVM), and a Random Forest Classifier (RFC) were employed. Model performance was evaluated using three-dimensional receiver operating characteristics (3D ROC), and the automated identification system was integrated into hyperspectrometers. The proposed system achieved an accuracy of 95.77% with a total detection time of 3380 ms ± 86.36 ms, proving to be a practical and effective tool for detecting fusarium wilt on Phalaenopsis in the industry.

TW3-based ROI detection and classification using a chaotic ANN and DNN-EVGO architecture for an automated bone age assessment on hand X-ray images

ABSTRACT Bone illnesses arise at a young age itself, so bone age assessment (BAA) is primarily utilized in paediatrics to identify their growth. Several BAA-related methods are employed to determine bone maturity; however, they do not give accuracy and the rate of error increases. To overcome this issue, in this manuscript, TW3-based Region of Interest (ROI) identification and classification with Chaotic ANN (CANN), as well as Deep Neural Network optimized with Evolved Gradient Direction optimizer (EVGO) architecture, is proposed for an Automated BAA classification. In this, Hand X-Ray images are taken from the Digital Hand Atlas (DHA) dataset and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) database. Here, Tanner-Whitehouse (TW3) and Shallow convolution neural network (SCNN) is utilized for extracting the ROI regions such as radius, ulna, and short bones (RUS) from the wrist region of the left hand. After that, the extracted ROI feature data are given to CANN for predicting BAA. Then, the predicted data are classified using the DNN-EVGO network. The bone age evaluation is then classified depending on maturity phases. The proposed approach is activated in MATLAB. Simulation outcomes of TW3- SCNN- CANN- DNN-EVGO- BAA methods for DHA database attain higher accuracy of 45.75%, 37.64%, 24.64% when analysed to the existing models, such as Faster Region-Convolutional Neural network oriented feature learning with optimal trained Recurrent Neural Network for BAA for paediatrics (TW3-F-R-CNN-AF-SFO), Multi-objective segmentation approach for BAA under parameter tuning- U-net architecture, and TW3-based fully automated bone age assessment system using deep neural networks (TW3-F-R-CNN-VGGNet-CNN-BAA).

Detection and classification of COVID-19 byusing faster R-CNN and mask R-CNN on CT images.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has a devastating impact on people's daily lives and healthcare systems. The rapid spread of this virus should be stopped by early detection of infected patients through efficient screening. Artificial intelligence techniques are used for accurate disease detection in computed tomography (CT) images. This article aims to develop a process that can accurately diagnose COVID-19 using deep learning techniques on CT images. Using CT images collected from Yozgat Bozok University, the presented method begins with the creation of an original dataset, which includes 4000 CT images. The faster R-CNN and mask R-CNN methods are presented for this purpose in order to train and test the dataset to categorize patients with COVID-19 and pneumonia infections. In this study, the results are compared using VGG-16 for faster R-CNN model and ResNet-50 and ResNet-101 backbones for mask R-CNN. The faster R-CNN model used in the study has an accuracy rate of 93.86%, and the ROI (region of interest) classification loss is 0.061 per ROI. At the conclusion of the final training, the mask R-CNN model generates mAP (mean average precision) values for ResNet-50 and ResNet-101, respectively, of 97.72% and 95.65%. The results for fivefolds are obtained by applying the cross-validation to the methods used. With training, our model performs better than the industry standard baselines and can help with automated COVID-19 severity quantification in CT images.

Weed Classification from Natural Corn Field-Multi-Plant Images Based on Shallow and Deep Learning.

Crop and weed discrimination in natural field environments is still challenging for implementing automatic agricultural practices, such as weed control. Some weed control methods have been proposed. However, these methods are still restricted as they are implemented under controlled conditions. The development of a sound weed control system begins by recognizing the crop and the different weed plants presented in the field. In this work, a classification approach of Zea mays L. (Crop), narrow-leaf weeds (NLW), and broadleaf weeds (BLW) from multi-plant images are presented. Moreover, a large image dataset was generated. Images were captured in natural field conditions, in different locations, and growing stages of the plants. The extraction of regions of interest (ROI) is carried out employing connected component analysis (CCA), whereas the classification of ROIs is based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and compared with a shallow learning approach. To measure the classification performance of both methods, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics were used. The best alternative for the weed classification task at early stages of growth and in natural corn field environments was the CNN-based approach, as indicated by the 97% accuracy value obtained.

3D Lightweight Network for Simultaneous Registration and Segmentation of Organs-at-Risk in CT Images of Head and Neck Cancer.

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is the most effective treatment for head and neck cancer. The successful implementation of IGRT requires accurate delineation of organ-at-risk (OAR) in the computed tomography (CT) images. In routine clinical practice, OARs are manually segmented by oncologists, which is time-consuming, laborious, and subjective. To assist oncologists in OAR contouring, we proposed a three-dimensional (3D) lightweight framework for simultaneous OAR registration and segmentation. The registration network was designed to align a selected OAR template to a new image volume for OAR localization. A region of interest (ROI) selection layer then generated ROIs of OARs from the registration results, which were fed into a multiview segmentation network for accurate OAR segmentation. To improve the performance of registration and segmentation networks, a centre distance loss was designed for the registration network, an ROI classification branch was employed for the segmentation network, and further, context information was incorporated to iteratively promote both networks' performance. The segmentation results were further refined with shape information for final delineation. We evaluated registration and segmentation performances of the proposed framework using three datasets. On the internal dataset, the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of registration and segmentation was 69.7% and 79.6%, respectively. In addition, our framework was evaluated on two external datasets and gained satisfactory performance. These results showed that the 3D lightweight framework achieved fast, accurate and robust registration and segmentation of OARs in head and neck cancer. The proposed framework has the potential of assisting oncologists in OAR delineation.

Fast and Robust People Detection in RGB Images

People detection in images has many uses today, ranging from face detection algorithms used by social networks to help the users tag other people, to surveillance systems that can create a statistic of the population density in an area, or identify a suspect, or even in the automotive industry as part of the Pedestrian Crash Avoidance Mitigation (PCAM) system. This work focuses on creating a fast and reliable object detection algorithm that will be trained on scenes that depict people in an indoor environment, starting from an existing state-of-the-art approach. The proposed method improves upon the You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLOv4) network by adding a region of interest classification and regression branch such as Faster R-CNN’s head. The candidate bounding boxes proposed by YOLOv4 are ranked based on their confidence score, the best candidates being kept and sent as input to the Faster Region-Based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN) head. To keep only the best detections, non-maximum suppression is applied to all proposals. This decreases the number of false-positive candidate bounding boxes, the low-confidence detections of the regression and classification branch being eliminated by the detections of YOLOv4 and vice versa in the non-maximum suppression step. This method can be used as the object detection algorithm in an image-based people tracking system, namely Tracktor, having a higher inference speed than Faster R-CNN. Our proposed method manages to achieve an overall accuracy of 95% and an inference time of 22 ms.

Machine learning based texture analysis of patella from X-rays for detecting patellofemoral osteoarthritis

ObjectiveTo assess the ability of texture features for detecting radiographic patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) from knee lateral view radiographs. DesignWe used lateral view knee radiographs from The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) public use datasets (n = 5507 knees). Patellar region-of-interest (ROI) was automatically detected using landmark detection tool (BoneFinder), and subsequently, these anatomical landmarks were used to extract three different texture ROIs. Hand-crafted features, based on Local Binary Patterns (LBP), were then extracted to describe the patellar texture. First, a machine learning model (Gradient Boosting Machine) was trained to detect radiographic PFOA from the LBP features. Furthermore, we used end-to-end trained deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) directly on the texture patches for detecting the PFOA. The proposed classification models were eventually compared with more conventional reference models that use clinical assessments and participant characteristics such as age, sex, body mass index (BMI), the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score, and tibiofemoral Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade. Atlas-guided visual assessment of PFOA status by expert readers provided in the MOST public use datasets was used as a classification outcome for the models. Performance of prediction models was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC AUC), the area under the precision-recall (PR) curve -average precision (AP)-, and Brier score in the stratified 5-fold cross validation setting. ResultsOf the 5507 knees, 953 (17.3%) had PFOA. AUC and AP for the strongest reference model including age, sex, BMI, WOMAC score, and tibiofemoral KL grade to predict PFOA were 0.817 and 0.487, respectively. Textural ROI classification using CNN significantly improved the prediction performance (ROC AUC = 0.889, AP = 0.714). ConclusionWe present the first study that analyses patellar bone texture for diagnosing PFOA. Our results demonstrates the potential of using texture features of patella to predict PFOA.

Combination of pixel-wise and region-based deep learning for pavement inspection and segmentation

ABSTRACT This paper presents a new model combining pixel-wise and region-based deep learning to provide a pavement inspection technology for jointly obtaining the distress classes, locations, and geometric information. This proposed model, called the segmentation RCNN, added an extract branch in a faster region convolutional neural network (Faster RCNN) for assigning the pixels in each region of interest (ROI) from an image into one of the pavement distresses or background, in parallel with the existing branches for ROI classification and bounding-box regression in the Faster RCNN. The effectiveness of the proposed model was tested by a pavement-image database collected from 16 asphalt pavements. The results indicated that the proposed model detected and segmented the pavement distresses (cracks, potholes, and patches) with mean intersection over unions of 87.6% and 70.3%, respectively. The proposed model was stable under various real-world conditions. The model reduced the computation costs, which provided a novel direction to achieve real-time pavement inspection.

A brain tumor detection system using gradient based watershed marked active contours and curvelet transform

AbstractComputer aided brain tumor detection is an efficient research area in brain image processing. In this study, a methodology called GWMAC‐CT (gradient based watershed marked active contours and curvelet transform) is proposed to detect the brain tumors in magnetic resonance (MR) images. The implemented system is based on skull removing, segmentation of region of interest (ROI), feature extraction, and ROI classification as tumor or nontumor. The proposed GWMAC is a two‐stage segmentation method which includes gradient based watershed transform (GWT) and improved active contours. The rough ROIs obtained with GWT are utilized as initial contours for the improved active contours method instead of marking initial contours manually. Curvelet transform‐based features of the exact ROI contours are classified via well‐known classification methods such as support vector machine (SVM), K‐nearest neighbors, random forest tree, and Naïve Bayes. Experiments are carried out on a set of brain MR images from BRATS database to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The performance evaluators such as accuracy, kappa statistics, false positive rate, precision, F1‐measure, and area under ROC curve are calculated as 96.81%, 0.927, 0.046, 0.905, 0.95, and 0.977, respectively with SVM.

A review of mammographic region of interest classification

AbstractEarly detection of breast cancer is important and highly valuable in clinical practice. X‐ray mammography is broadly used for prescreening the breast and is also attractive due to its noninvasive nature. However, experts can misdiagnose a significant proportion of the cases, which may either cause redundant examinations or cancer. In order to reduce false positive and negative rates of mammography screening, computer‐aided breast cancer detection has been studied for more than 30 years and many methods have been proposed by the researchers. In this review, region of interest (ROI) classification methods, which operate on a predefined or segmented ROIs with a focus on mass classification are surveyed. A total of 72 high quality journal and conference papers are selected from the Web of Science (WOS) database that meet several inclusion criteria. A comparative analysis is provided based on ROI extraction methods, data sets and machine learning techniques employed, the prediction accuracies, and usage frequency statistics. Based on the performances obtained on publicly available data sets, the ROI classification problem from mammogram images can be considered as approaching to be solved. Decoding Motor Imagery through Common Spatial Pattern Filters at the EEG Source Space.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a rapidly developing technology that aims to support individuals suffering from various disabilities and, ultimately, improve everyday quality of life. Sensorimotor rhythm-based BCIs have demonstrated remarkable results in controlling virtual or physical external devices but they still face a number of challenges and limitations. Main challenges include multiple degrees-of-freedom control, accuracy, and robustness. In this work, we develop a multiclass BCI decoding algorithm that uses electroencephalography (EEG) source imaging, a technique that maps scalp potentials to cortical activations, to compensate for low spatial resolution of EEG. Spatial features were extracted using Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) filters in the cortical source space from a number of selected Regions of Interest (ROIs). Classification was performed through an ensemble model, based on individual ROI classification models. The evaluation was performed on the BCI Competition IV dataset 2a, which features 4 motor imagery classes from 9 participants. Our results revealed a mean accuracy increase of 5.6% with respect to the conventional application method of CSP on sensors. Neuroanatomical constraints and prior neurophysiological knowledge play an important role in developing source space-based BCI algorithms. Feature selection and classifier characteristics of our implementation will be explored to raise performance to current state-of-the-art.

Detection and Classification of Land Crude Oil Spills Using Color Segmentation and Texture Analysis

Crude oil spills have negative consequences on the economy, environment, health and society in which they occur, and the severity of the consequences depends on how quickly these spills are detected once they begin. Several methods have been employed for spill detection, including real time remote surveillance by flying aircrafts with surveillance teams. Other methods employ various sensors, including visible sensors. This paper presents an algorithm to automatically detect the presence of crude oil spills in images acquired using visible light sensors. Images of crude oil spills used in the development of the algorithm were obtained from the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Nigeria website The major steps of the detection algorithm are image preprocessing, crude oil color segmentation, sky elimination segmentation, Region of Interest (ROI) extraction, ROI texture feature extraction, and ROI texture feature analysis and classification. The algorithm was developed using 25 sample images containing crude oil spills and demonstrated a sensitivity of 92% and an FPI of 1.43. The algorithm was further tested on a set of 56 case images and demonstrated a sensitivity of 82% and an FPI of 0.66. This algorithm can be incorporated into spill detection systems that utilize visible sensors for early detection of crude oil spills.

Using cell nuclei features to detect colon cancer tissue in hematoxylin and eosin stained slides.

Currently, diagnosis of colon cancer is based on manual examination of histopathological images by a pathologist. This can be time consuming and interpretation of the images is subject to inter- and intra-observer variability. This may be improved by introducing a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for automatic detection of cancer tissue within whole slide hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stains. Cancer disrupts the normal control mechanisms of cell proliferation and differentiation, affecting the structure and appearance of the cells. Therefore, extracting features from segmented cell nuclei structures may provide useful information to detect cancer tissue. A framework for automatic classification of regions of interest (ROI) containing either benign or cancerous colon tissue extracted from whole slide H&E stained images using cell nuclei features was proposed. A total of 1,596 ROI's were extracted from 87 whole slide H&E stains (44 benign and 43 cancer). A cell nuclei segmentation algorithm consisting of color deconvolution, k-means clustering, local adaptive thresholding, and cell separation was performed within the ROI's to extract cell nuclei features. From the segmented cell nuclei structures a total of 750 texture and intensity-based features were extracted for classification of the ROI's. The nine most discriminative cell nuclei features were used in a random forest classifier to determine if the ROI's contained benign or cancer tissue. The ROI classification obtained an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.96, sensitivity of 0.88, specificity of 0.92, and accuracy of 0.91 using an optimized threshold. The developed framework showed promising results in using cell nuclei features to classify ROIs into containing benign or cancer tissue in H&E stained tissue samples. © 2017 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

Classification of breast tissues into mass and non-mass by means of the micro-genetic algorithm, phylogenetic trees, LBP and SVM

This work has the objective of developing a methodology for the classification of regions of interest (ROI) extracted from mammograms into masses and non-masses. To this end, we conducted a comparative study by combining several techniques in the various stages of the problem. We compared several texture-based techniques for the classification of ROIs. This study combines image processing, phylogenetic trees (PT), local binary patterns (LBP), support vector machines (SVM) and the micro-genetic algorithm (GA). The analysis of texture is performed, either through the combination PT/LBP or with grey levels, to compute the taxonomic diversity () and taxonomic distinction (*) indexes extracted from sub-regions (circular, circular crown, internal mask, external mask and the combination of internal and external mask) of an ROI. A GA is used to estimate the best phylogenetic weights. Then, its results are compared with the results achieved with the use of PT only. We also analyse the behaviour of the methodology when using the ROIs with and without enhancement. This enhancement consists of the application of a mean filter and the contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalisation (CLAHE). PTs and SVM were used to perform the selection of features. To evaluate the performance of the methodologies under analysis, we used the following metrics: sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (). Sensitivity and specificity measure the efficiency of the classifier at the correct detection of positive (masses) and negative (non-masses) cases, respectively. Accuracy measures the performance of the classification in both cases. The ROC curve is the graphical representation of the pairs (1-specificity, sensitivity). is the area formed by the ROC curve, which equals to 1 in an ideal test. The comparison of the possible combinations for each stage of the study revealed the following results. In the analyses without feature selection, the best results were (1) 100% accuracy and of 0.99 for the combination of PT, LBP and internal masks and (2) 99.5% accuracy and of 0.99 for the combination of GA, LBP and internal masks for the extraction of features. In the analyses with feature selection, the best results were (1) 100% accuracy and of 1.0 for the combination of GA and LBP (feature extraction) with the union of internal and external masks and (2) 98.5% accuracy and of 0.99 for the combination of PT, LBP and the union of internal and external masks.

An innovative neural network framework to classify blood vessels and tubules based on Haralick features evaluated in histological images of kidney biopsy

Introduction and objective: Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems based on Medical Imaging could support physicians in several fields and recently are also applied in histopathology. The aim of this work is to discuss in detail the design and testing of a CAD system for segmentation and discrimination of blood vessels versus tubules from biopsies in the kidney tissue through the elaboration of histological images.Materials and methods: Materials consist in 10 Kidney Biopsy Slides (KBS) with Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) staining. The Regions Of Interest (ROI) identified by expert are in total 221:71 vessels and 150 tubules. KBS preparation and digital acquisition have been conducted by expert technicians at the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation (DETO) of the University of Bari Aldo Moro (Italy). Each slice is a Red Green Blue (RGB) format image with a resolution of 0.50µm/pixel. Starting from KBS images, several techniques were tested for ROI's segmentation and classification. In particular, we formerly describe the innovative preliminary step to segment regions of interest, the procedure to extract significant features from them and finally discuss the supervised Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) architecture based on error back propagation training algorithm. All the training sets were builts by using vessels and non vessels (tubules) ROI samples, whose dimensions were correlated to the vessels to be detected.Results: The performance of the best ANN architecture, trained by using a training set of 35 vessels among the 71 available vessels in dataset, were evaluated in terms of False Positives (FPs) and False Negatives (FNs). On an initial reduced dataset, it reveals good performance and robustness in terms of FPs reduction.Conclusion: Tests determined that the supervised ANN approach is consistent and reveals good performance, after a training phase based on vessels and non-vessels (tubules) samples. Moreover, our method could be improved by using a larger dataset diagnosed by expert nephropathologists.

Breast mass classification on mammograms using radial local ternary patterns

Textural features can be useful in differentiating between benign and malignant breast lesions on mammograms. Unlike previous computerized schemes, which relied largely on shape and margin features based on manual contours of masses, textural features can be determined from regions of interest (ROIs) without precise lesion segmentation. In this study, therefore, we investigated an ROI-based feature, namely, radial local ternary patterns (RLTP), which takes into account the direction of edge patterns with respect to the center of masses for classification of ROIs for benign and malignant masses. Using an artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) classifiers, the classification abilities of RLTP were compared with those of the regular local ternary patterns (LTP), rotation invariant uniform (RIU2) LTP, texture features based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and wavelet features. The performance was evaluated with 376 ROIs including 181 malignant and 195 benign masses. The highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves among three classifiers were 0.90, 0.77, 0.78, 0.86, and 0.83 for RLTP, LTP, RIU2-LTP, GLCM, and wavelet features, respectively. The results indicate the usefulness of the proposed texture features for distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions and the superiority of the radial patterns compared with the conventional rotation invariant patterns.

Computer-aided diagnosis in hysteroscopic imaging.

The paper presents the development of a computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) system for the early detection of endometrial cancer. The proposed CAD system supports reproducibility through texture feature standardization, standardized multifeature selection, and provides physicians with comparative distributions of the extracted texture features. The CAD system was validated using 516 regions of interest (ROIs) extracted from 52 subjects. The ROIs were equally distributed among normal and abnormal cases. To support reproducibility, the RGB images were first gamma corrected and then converted into HSV and YCrCb. From each channel of the gamma-corrected YCrCb, HSV, and RGB color systems, we extracted the following texture features: 1) statistical features (SFs), 2) spatial gray-level dependence matrices (SGLDM), and 3) gray-level difference statistics (GLDS). The texture features were then used as inputs with support vector machines (SVMs) and the probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifiers. After accounting for multiple comparisons, texture features extracted from abnormal ROIs were found to be significantly different than texture features extracted from normal ROIs. Compared to texture features extracted from normal ROIs, abnormal ROIs were characterized by lower image intensity, while variance, entropy, and contrast gave higher values. In terms of ROI classification, the best results were achieved by using SF and GLDS features with an SVM classifier. For this combination, the proposed CAD system achieved an 81% correct classification rate.
