An explanatory study of factors influencing engagement in AI education at the K-12 Level: an extension of the classic TAM model

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense promise for K-12 education, yet understanding the factors influencing students’ engagement with AI courses remains a challenge. This study addresses this gap by extending the technology acceptance model (TAM) to incorporate cognitive factors such as AI intrinsic motivation (AIIM), AI readiness (AIRD), AI confidence (AICF), and AI anxiety (AIAX), alongside human–computer interaction (HCI) elements like user interface (UI), content (C), and learner-interface interactivity (LINT) in the context of using generative AI (GenAI) tools. By including these factors, an expanded model is presented to capture the complexity of student engagement with AI education. To validate the model, 210 Chinese students spanning grades K7 to K9 participated in a 1 month artificial intelligence course. Survey data and structural equation modeling reveal significant relationships between cognitive and HCI factors and perceived usefulness (PU) and ease of use (PEOU). Specifically, AIIM, AIRD, AICF, UI, C, and LINT positively influence PU and PEOU, while AIAX negatively affects both. Furthermore, PU and PEOU significantly predict students’ attitudes toward AI curriculum learning. These findings underscore the importance of considering cognitive and HCI factors in the design and implementation of AI education initiatives. By providing a theoretical foundation and practical insights, this study informs curriculum development and aids educational institutions and businesses in evaluating and optimizing AI4K12 curriculum design and implementation strategies.

Fintech applications in social welfare schemes during Covid times: An extension of the classic TAM model in India

AbstractIn terms of remote banking services for social welfare programmes, fintech has completely changed the game for financial institutions, particularly during the COVID pandemic. However, many recipients continue to be dubious due to fears about its security. This study aims to create an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) that incorporates perceived risk, trust and innovation diffusion theory into the conventional TAM model to understand better the variables that influence user adoption and implementation of Fintech technologies. The critical FinTech applications were evaluated using the hypothetical classic model, which included external influences. The proposed model (urban poor beneficiaries‐TAM) was experimentally verified using semi‐structured questionnaires and structural equation modelling data. This research shows that attitude has a considerable impact on how fintech apps are meant to be used, outweighing usefulness and risk as factors that directly affect how they are used. The report concludes by discussing the critical organizational consequences and offering a variety of strategies for maintaining this recently innovative business in light of current technological improvements.

An Extended Technology Adoption Model with Perceived Visual Attractiveness to Assess Academic Web Portals

The educational system in the Philippines has been slowly progressing in terms of its technological infrastructures, such as web portals. Such a pattern in web portal development prompts stakeholders to carefully consider the adoption constructs, in order for limited and scarce resources to be wisely allocated. Therefore, this paper intends to assess an academic web portal by extending the classical technology acceptance model (TAM) framework with the addition of perceived visual attractiveness. A case study in a state university in Cebu, Philippines, in which 418 undergraduate students participated, was performed to explore relationships among constructs. Using structural equation modeling, the results indicated that perceived attractiveness poses a significant influence on perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, which thereby significantly impacts perceived attitude and behavioral intention. Such results can aid stakeholders in managing resources in the development of academic web portals by focusing on important constructs such as perceived visual attractiveness.

Exploring Use Acceptance of Electric Bicycle-Sharing Systems: An Empirical Study Based on PLS-SEM Analysis.

The electric bicycle-sharing system (EBSS) is the fourth-generation urban shared bicycle travel system, which effectively improves the travel efficiency of urban residents and solve the problem of urban congestion. This study attempts to use an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) method to study the acceptance of EBSSs. We had introduced four potential variables, including perceived pleasure (PP), perceived environmental value (PEV), perceived cost (PC), and perceived reliability (PR), into the classic TAM to form a new EBSS-TAM. Data were obtained by using a Likert scale questionnaire from 399 citizens in China. Partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with reflective constructs was employed as the analysis method. The results showed that: (1) the EBSS-TAM can explain user behaviors regarding the use of EBSSs. PP has a positive impact on behavior attitude (BA) while having no impact on behavior intention (BI). PEV has no impact on BA and BI. PC has a negative impact on BA and has no impact on BI. PR has a positive impact on BA while having no impact on BI. Perceived ease of use (PEU) has a positive impact on PP and PEV. (2) Younger users (under 35 years old) are more likely to change from liking CBSSs to using EBSSs than older users are. Male users are more satisfied with EBSSs because of their ease of use. The users who never used CBSSs are more likely to perceive the environmental protection value of EBSSs. Some managerial implications were proposed for the EBSSs.

Determinants of consumers' adoption intention for blockchain technology in E-commerce

PurposeWhile blockchain is considered to have many unprecedented characteristics, and its application is recognized as another new opportunity for the development of e-commerce, there is limited evidence on the factors affecting the adoption of blockchain in the commercial e-commerce sector. This study aims to identify determinants influencing consumers' intention to adopt blockchain technology in e-commerce. Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the classic technology acceptance model (TAM), a conceptual framework is developed and empirically assessed to present the relationships between the core characteristics of blockchain and consumers' adoption intention. Survey data were collected from 228 users of the blockchain e-commerce system in China. The structural equation modeling (SEM) approach is used to test the hypotheses. FindingsThe results indicate that cost saving and traceability have a positive effect on perceived usefulness while insignificant associations are found between data privacy security and perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use and consumers' adoption intention. Research limitations/implicationsThe research only examined Chinese users, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Future research is encouraged to conduct comparative studies beyond this region, e.g., emerging markets versus developed economies. It would also be useful to explore mediating and moderating effects of other new technologies that complement the application and adoption of blockchain. Practical implicationsThe research results also bring managerial implications with the ways of attracting customers via blockchain technology, including improving system ability to reduce cost and enhance traceability. Originality/value -This paper is one of the early empirical endeavors that examines determinant factors affecting individual users towards the adoption of blockchain technology in e-commerce that is absent in the extant research. This study further contributes to the development of the knowledge bank of blockchain via the conceptual framework of its adoption under the e-commerce context, in particular considering its technical features.

Behavioural Intention to the Use of Mobile Banking in Kerala: An Application of Extended Classical Technology Acceptance Model

This research, using an extended version of classical technology acceptance model (TAM), investigates the factors influencing the adoption behaviour of mobile technology in banking. Survey data on 214 banking customers in Kerala were analysed under a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework and the results confirm the usefulness of TAM in predicting mobile banking adoption behaviour. The exogenous constructs from the original TAM, perceived usefulness (PU), and perceived ease of use (PEU) along with two additional constructs in the extended model, perceived credibility (PC) and perceived self-efficacy (PSE), emerged out as significant antecedents of the behavioural intention of customers, especially of an educated youth, towards the use of mobile technology in banking. Findings ultimately suggest that accurate and consistent identification of customers’ propensity to adopt technology banking provides strategic map to banks from emerging markets to grow in underserved markets, achieve omni-channel presence, and disrupt value chain components.

“Self-Cognition” in the Construction of Digital Museums—A Study Based on the “Collection of Famous Paintings in the Palace Museum”

This case study of the “Collection of Famous Paintings in the Palace Museum” examines digital museum visiting from a classic Technology Acceptance Model perspective. The impact of college students’ self-cognition on their use of the collection was investigated to study the acceptance behavior of digital museum users, thus providing a useful reference for the construction of “user-oriented” digital museums in the future. The individual innovativeness results show that: 1) the basic variables relating to “self-cognition” have a positive impact on the visitors’ perceived ease of use; 2) the perceived ease of use has a significant positive impact on usage intention; and 3) self-efficacy and individual innovativeness can indirectly impact the intended use of digital collections such as the “Collection of Famous Paintings in the Palace Museum” by college students through their positive impact on the perceived ease of use.

The Technology Acceptance Model for Resource-Limited Settings (TAM-RLS): A Novel Framework for Mobile Health Interventions Targeted to Low-Literacy End-Users in Resource-Limited Settings.

Although mobile health (mHealth) technologies have shown promise in improving clinical care in resource-limited settings (RLS), they are infrequently brought to scale. One limitation to the success of many mHealth interventions is inattention to end-user acceptability, which is an important predictor of technology adoption. We conducted in-depth interviews with 43 people living with HIV in rural Uganda who had participated in a clinical trial of a short messaging system (SMS)-based intervention designed to prompt return to clinic after an abnormal laboratory test. Interviews focused on established features of technology acceptance models, including perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, and included open-ended questions to gain insight into unexplored issues related to the intervention's acceptability. We used conventional (inductive) and direct content analysis to derive categories describing use behaviors and acceptability. Interviews guided development of a proposed conceptual framework, the technology acceptance model for resource-limited settings (TAM-RLS). This framework incorporates both classic technology acceptance model categories as well as novel factors affecting use in this setting. Participants described how SMS message language, phone characteristics, and experience with similar technologies contributed to the system's ease of use. Perceived usefulness was shaped by the perception that the system led to augmented HIV care services and improved access to social support from family and colleagues. Emergent themes specifically related to mHealth acceptance among PLWH in Uganda included (1) the importance of confidentiality, disclosure, and stigma, and (2) the barriers and facilitators downstream from the intervention that impacted achievement of the system's target outcome. The TAM-RLS is a proposed model of mHealth technology acceptance based upon end-user experiences in rural Uganda. Although the proposed model requires validation, the TAM-RLS may serve as a useful tool to guide design and implementation of mHealth interventions.

Are We There Yet?

This study used aspects of the classical Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to predict instructor acceptance and adoption of a tablet computer (tablet PC) for mobile learning in a Ghanaian higher education institution. Following a distribution of a customized tablet PC (known as Campus Companion) to all instructors of the institution, and an expectation that they will use these devices to support and facilitate mobile learning, data on instructor perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intention to use the technology were gathered and analyzed. Thirty-eight (38) instructors participated in the study. Findings show that instructors' intentions to use the tablet PC for mobile learning are very low, and are significantly influenced by their perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and attitude towards the device. Implications of these findings for practice and further research are discussed within the context of the adoption of tablet PCs for mobile learning within the Ghanaian higher education context in particular and the developing world in general.

The Impact of Application of Information Technology on E-Service Quality

With rapid growth of the Internet and the globalization, companies accepted and adopted the new information and communication technology to offer e-services to their customers, service organizations in the third millennium are trying by accelerating the development process of information technology in various sectors, avoiding from traditional patterns and creating new standards to suit the requirement of the information age. In this regard, providing IT-Based services poses a way to control costs, satisfy and fulfill users' expectations and facilitate the use of these services. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of IT application on e-services quality and identify the relationship among dimensions of these two variables. The population was the Members of Tehran Civil Servants Pension Fund in October 2011. Hypotheses have been proposed in the form of a conceptual model and results achieved using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) methodology. In this case, we used the model of Parasurman et al. (2002) to determine dimensions of e-services quality and the Classical Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) for dimensions of IT application (Perceived usefulness, Perceived ease of use and Intention to use Computer). The results show that these variables are associated together. Therefore, to improve strategic goals it is recommended that senior managers should consider the linkage of these two variables.

Factors affecting faculty use of learning technologies: implications for models of technology adoption

This study examines factors associated with the use of learning technologies by higher education faculty. In an online survey in a UK university, 114 faculty respondents completed a measure of Internet self-efficacy, and reported on their use of learning technologies along with barriers to their adoption. Principal components analysis suggested two main barriers to adoption: structural constraints within the University and perceived usefulness of the tools. Regression analyses indicated both these variables, along with Internet self-efficacy, were associated with use of online learning technology. These findings are more consistent with models of technology engagement that recognize facilitating or inhibiting conditions (unified theory of acceptance and use of technology; decomposed theory of planned behavior) than the classic technology acceptance model (TAM). Practical implications for higher education institutions are that while faculty training and digital literacy initiatives may have roles to play, structural factors (e.g., provision of resources and technical support) must also be addressed for optimal uptake of learning technologies.

Competitive factors of mobile operators' TV services in Brazil: the mass customisation option analysed

Mobile TV is growing in importance worldwide and is of special interest to mobile operators, which have been trying to gain advantage through value-added services in the current competitive environment. This research utilised the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) from Davis et al. (1989) for a comprehension of the elements needed for users' adoption of new services of this nature. It is proposed to add a new construct for the classic TAM: mass customisation, taken from the Dynamic Stability Model of Boynton et al. (1993). Based on the technical background, field research was accomplished with 32 professionals of the four main Brazilian mobile operators to evaluate the proposed elements in terms of importance and the level of quality at which they are found in the market.

Exploring individual personality factors as drivers of M‐shopping acceptance

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate how personality variables related to technology (innovativeness, compatibility and affinity) can modify the influence of classical technology acceptance model (TAM) variables on behavioural adoption intention of mobile shopping.Design/methodology/approachThe impact of innovativeness, compatibility, affinity, TAM beliefs (ease of use and usefulness) and attitude on mobile shopping adoption is tested through structural equation modelling techniques. The sample consisted of 470 Spanish mobile telephone users selected on the basis of convenience.FindingsData analysis shows that the effect of perceived usefulness and, in a minor degree, perceived ease of use are over dimensioned if personality variables are omitted making intention formation to be perceived as more rational than it really is. Personality variables (affinity to mobile telephones, compatibility and innovativeness) have a direct and positive influence on the intention to engage in M‐shopping.Practical implicationsThis research enables mobile shopping agents to know what aspects to highlight in their communication strategies to increase the M‐services adoption rate. The complementary use of the mobile and the internet is recommended since the similarities between both methods may favour the acceptance of distance shopping systems. Mobile services should not be simply designed as easy to use, but also as an enjoyable experience.Originality/valueDespite the importance of personality factors on mobile shopping adoption, they were explicitly ignored when the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology was formulated. This research does not try to propose an extension of the TAM model, but analyses the degree in which the explicit rejection of personality variables could impoverish its performance.

La influencia de la dependencia del medio en el comercio electrónico B2C. Propuesta de un modelo integrador aplicado a la intención de compra futura en Internet

This paper analyses if the classic Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is able or not to accurately explain the e-buying intention of web users. This model is extended with the inclusion of Internet media dependency variable which improves its explanatory power. Due to the formative nature of dependency construct, analysis is developed through Partial Least Squares (PLS). Results based on a sample of 465 non purchasing web users show that TAM model accurately explains e-buying intention and that Internet dependency influences both attitude and buying intention. Ease of use and perceived usefulness reveal themselves like key variables to explain both e-buying intention and Internet dependency. Managerial implications are finally derived from these results.

Review of Relationships Among Variables in TAM

The technology acceptance model (TAM) is an important tool in information technology research. Many scholars have applied the classical TAM to various research domains. However, the relationships between variables in these TAM models are not strongly desired. Thirty-four articles selected from international journals were analyzed to show that most of the relationships in the classical TAM are significant, but the stabilities of these relationships differ. The significant positive relationships between perceived ease of use and its independent variables are more stable than the others. Various factors can strengthen or weaken these relationships.
