Temperature dependence for purification of leachate containing heavy metals by phytoremediation using the artificial channel

Concentrations of heavy metals leach from soil and rock excavated at civil engineering construction sites occasionally exceed the environmental criteria value in Japan. The phytoremediation is one of the techniques for cleaning up contaminated environments. The Eleocharis acicularis is tolerant plant of a wide variety of heavy metals, and it absorbs and accumulates these metals and has been proven to be effective in mine effluent treatment. In this study, we conducted a purification experiment using an artificial channel to know the ability of the E. acicularis to absorb and accumulate heavy metals due to differences in temperature. The drainage containing arsenic flowing out of the embankment flowed into the artificial channel at different periods of average temperature. As a result of experiments, the arsenic content of the E. acicularis were confirmed increasing in 3.4 mg/kg in the summer and 2.3 mg/kg in the winter. These values are corresponding with 0.8% in the summer and in 0.3% in the winter for the arsenic gross weight of the displacement according to each season. Thus, the arsenic absorption ability of the E. acicularis was able to grasp by the artificial channel experiment.

Statistical analysis of geo-electric imaging and geotechnical test results – a case study

For conjunctive use of geoelectric imaging and geotechnical site investigations in geotechnical characterization of major civil engineering construction sites, an objective assessment of influencing factors is important. Here, we present multiple regression analyses of both geoelectric (Electrical Resistivity Tomography, ERT; Induced Polarization Imaging, IPI) and geotechnical site investigations (Standard Penetration Test, SPT) for two profiles at a construction site for CGEWHO Complex in Greater Noida region, Delhi to assess the role of influencing formation factors like sand, fines and water content. Achieved results show that SPT ‘N’ and IPI are well predicted by a linear multiple regression. On an average, the nonlinear regression has improved predicted SPT ‘N’, resistivity and chargeability by 28.55%, 22.45% and 9.58%, respectively. The influence of sand and fines content is more than that of water content in the prediction of chargeability and SPT ‘N’. RMS error is less in prediction of IPI chargeability (average error of 1.96%) in comparison to SPT ‘N’ value (average error of 11.35%). As factors affecting chargeability (IPI) and SPT ‘N’ are similar, non-invasive IPI can be used along with few geotechnical site investigations for detailed geotechnical site investigations.

Research Review on the Teaching Reform of the Civil Engineering Courses Based on the BIM Mode

The three aspects of the civil engineering construction site layout, project management, construction site simulation were applied to the classroom teaching of the civil engineering on the BIM technology. Let the students fully understanding and application of the BIM technology, and achieved the full unity of the theory and the practice. Through the BIM technology to manage the construction project, finally it was be applied to the teaching reform based on the results of the study process, and to improve the teaching effect.

This study discussed about the initiation of the failure of driven shaft and also proposed an effective technique to reduce the moments applied onto the driving shaft of monorail for forest industry. At first, geometrical change of the tooth was observed after the rack rail was used for about 200 hours (employed for about 30days) at civil engineering construction site. The power unit of monorail was driven with traction on the original and worn rack rail in the short range at laboratory. The variation of torsional and bending moment applied onto the driven shaft were measured with respect to the rotational angle of the shaft when the driven gears were engaged with original and worn rack rail, respectively. To reduce the wear of the rack rail, pitch diameter of pins in which number of pins was also reduced was decreased in comparison with that of conventional gears. The results showed that a reduction of 73% in average torsional moment applied onto the driven shaft of the front gear was obtained. Shear sliding on the surface of the rack rail tooth was prevented while by applying the modified gear. In conclusion, to decrease pitch diameter of pins in which number of pins was also reduced to prevent the failure of driven shaft of monorail for forest industry was effective.

Popularizing Geological Education Among Civil Engineering Students

ABSTRACTThe sustainable development of an economy and a society cannot be realized without the help of modern geoscience. Engineering geology knowledge is necessary on a civil engineering construction site to ensure the construction work goes smoothly. This paper first discusses the importance of geoscience, especially the study of engineering geology. Then, the current Chinese engineering geology course for civil engineering students is summarized. The engineering geology course at Shijiazhuang Tiedao University is described in detail, including its history, its content, and some teaching tactics for the course. The paper closes with an evaluation of the effects of the teaching tactics.
