Many engineers are familiar with the finite element method, which involves the analysis of the forces and displacements in a network of discrete elements that are designed to represent the mechanical and geometrical properties of the structure being studied. The last decade has seen the emergence of an alternative method; a method that represents a structure not by discrete elements within the material but by elements on the boundary of the material. The acceptance and ultimate popularity of this latter boundary element method depends to a large extent upon the lucidity of texts that seek to explain the method and also upon the availability of computer programs that apply the method. This book, in my opinion, makes an important contribution in both areas. The authors, who are Professors in the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota, are well known in the fields of mining engineering and rock mechanics for their papers on the application of boundary element methods in the analysis of stresses and displacements around under-ground excavations. In particular, Professor Crouch has been responsible, perhaps more than anyone else, for the development and application of the displacement discontinuity method. The first chapter provides a non-mathematical introduction to the boundary element method and gives an explanation of some of the terms used. Chapter 2, which is a review of linear elasticity, contains material that can be found in many standard texts on the theory of elasticity. The inclusion of this material here does serve to

The Application of Location Models to Off-Airport Terminals

Off-airport terminals have been studied by Snell and Hazen (Snell, J. E., D. C. Hazen. 1970. A first approximation satellite terminal system evaluation model—FASTSEM. Report 103, Transportation Systems Engineering, Department of Civil and Geological Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton.), who evaluated the benefits obtainable from optimally located terminals. The location of off-airport terminals was studied by Kanafani (Kanafani, A. K. 1972. Location models of off-airport terminals. Trans. Res. 6 371–379.), who proposed a number of models to optimize the travel time savings obtainable from terminals located in an idealized linear city. This paper attempts to extend the approach proposed by Kanafani and to apply the resulting models to a case study. Only the location problem is dealt with in this paper and, for that, only travel-time savings obtained by connecting the terminal to the airport with an exclusive mass transit system are considered. Poulton (Poulton, M. C. 1974. The location of off-airport terminals. PhD dissertation, University of California, Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering, Berkeley (Dissertation Series).) considered other benefits of off-airport terminals taking into account potential savings in airport terminal congestion.

Sediments as pollution clues

Three University of Rhode Island engineers believe that measuring the pollutant concentration in estuarine sediments is usually more revealing and important in establishing the quality of an estuary than measuring the pollutant concentration in its water. In a recently completed study of the sediment in Narragansett Bay, the researchers, all from the URI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, found that pollutant materials in bottom sediments usually stay for a significantly longer time and are more stable than pollutant materials in water.The study was completed by Vito A. Nacci, who hasa joint appointment with the URI Department of Ocean Engineering, Calvin P.C. Poon, and Milton T. Huston, a research associate.

Didactics and Self-Assessment: An Innovative Proposal for The University of Trento

The university institution is called today to face challenges concerning the ability to recognize and pursue new formative goals (Grion et al., 2018). In the light of this, the research wants to reflect on the reality of the University of Trento, so far, the only Italian university, among the 35 evaluated, to have obtained the highest rating assignable by the Anvur. The aim is to highlight both the primary nodes in which the University requires renewal and its hinges points, and report in detail the results of quantitative analysis, commissioned and drafted by the Joint Committee of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM), which saw the need to further analyze the reality of students of the individual courses of the Department. The contribution links, in conclusion, the points emerged from the direct observation of the students to a consistent response to the emerging literature review. Specifically, reflecting the field of post-compulsory education paths, with a strong connection with self-assessment (SA). The results seem to show that self-assessment (SA) can be a new key to the promotion of an education capable of experimenting, through participatory and innovative teaching, knowledge, autonomy, responsibility and soft skills: fundamental elements that the University of Trento needs to improve to achieve European and international standards.

Measurement and prediction of viscosity-pressure characteristics of liquids : G. P. Fresco, E. E. Klaus and E. J. Tewkesbury JOLT, 91, Ser. F, (3) (1969) 451–458; 3 figs., 8 tables, 13 refs.

Details are given herein of the refinement and application of a three-dimensional layer integrated numerical model to predict morphological changes in tidal basins. The solution of governing differential equations, which consist of the conservation of mass and momentum for the hydrodynamics, the transport equation for the suspended sediment fluxes and the sediment mass conservation equation for the bed level changes are carried out by the use of Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) Finite Difference Method (FDM). The model includes different criteria for the initiation of motion namely Shields (1936, Application of Similarity Principles and Turbulence Research to Bed load Movement, Hydrodynamics Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pub. No. 167), Kolahdoozan (1999, Numerical Modelling of Geomorphological Processes in Estuarine Waters, PhD Thesis, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Bradford, Bradford, UK, 288) and Zanke (2003, On the Influence of Turbulence on the Initiation of Sediment Motion, International Journal of Sediment Research, 18(1), 17–31), to compare different aspects of flow conditions. As the flow is highly turbulent with the random nature of its components, many researchers have tried to express sediment transport processes by using stochastic approaches. In the current study both deterministic and stochastic methods are included in the numerical model to evaluate their accuracy and efficiency. To validate the numerical model results, laboratory measurements are used, with these being obtained from an earlier experimental program undertaken by the authors. Results of a short term bed level changes in a laboratory model harbor are included for the model verification purposes. Comparisons are undertaken using different criteria for the initiation of motion, with the results highlighting that the unsteadiness in the flow parameters included in the numerical model has a major effect on the bed level changes inside the harbor, in compare with the turbulence structure of the flow. The model is then applied to a real case study of the Humber Estuary, located in the UK, with comparisons being undertaken for different criteria for the initiation of motion, using both deterministic and stochastic approaches for the long term bed level predictions.

The way in which the further development of nuclear power takes place depends very largely on progress in the design of the pressure vessels and buildings containing the reactors. The mechanical and civil engineering solutions of the many novel problems encountered affect not only the economics of electricity production but can also be expected to influence siting policy for power stations.

Testing Characteristics of Bearing Metals

A comprehensive scheme of lubrication now being carried out for the British Ship building Research Association by the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, in their Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering has included work on journal bearings, and a paper entitled “Some Factors in the Design and Lubrication of Journal Bearings” by Prof. A. S. T. Thomson, D.Sc., Ph.D., Prof. A. W. Scott, B.Sc., Ph.D., W. Ferguson, B.Sc., and H. L. McBroom, B.Sc., Ph.D. was recently read before the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, and this gave details of this work. We give here a shortened version of this paper.

New Research Facilities

Dedication ceremonies were held early in June at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to celebrate the opening of MIT's new $600,000 hydrodynamics laboratory. Located on Vassar Street near Main Street in Cambridge, the new laboratory has been planned to provide space and facilities for all types of research in the mechanics of liquid flow. A 108‐foot ship model towing tank, to be operated by MIT's department of naval architecture and marine engineering, is included in the laboratory's permanent equipment. Other laboratory facilities are designed primarily to serve the department of civil and sanitary engineering. Arthur T. Ippen, professor of hydraulics, is laboratory director. The dedication program took place during the opening session of a symposium on hydrodynamics in modern technology which was held from June 4th to 6th in Cambridge and which was attended by more than two hundred scientists, hydraulic engineers, and naval architects.

University of London

THE title of professor emeritus in the University of London has been conferred on the following : Sir Alexander Fleming, professor of bacteriology in St. Mary's Hospital Medical School since 1928 ; Sir Francis Fraser, professor of medicine and physician in St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College during 1920–34 and professor of medicine in the British Postgraduate Medical School during 1934–46 ; Prof. H. Gordon Jackson, professor of zoology in Birkbeck College since 1928, and master of the College; and Prof. C. H. Lobban, formerly head of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and professor of civil engineering in King's College during 1935–46.

Civil Engineering at King's College, London: Prof. A. D. Ross

DR. A. D. ROSS, who will succeed Prof. C. H. Lobban in tha University of London chair of civil engineering at King's College (see Nature, July 20, p. 91), graduated at Edinburgh in 1929. After some years in proffessional civil engineering on railway and road obstruction, he returned to the University of Edinburgh as an assistant in the Engineering Department under the late Sir. T. Hudson Beare. He left Edinburgh to serve for a time as an education officer with the Air Ministry, and since 1935 he has held the appointment of lecturer in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at King's College, London. Dr. Ross's main interest has been in the field of concrete and reinforced concrete, and he has studied especially the non-elastic deformations in this material and their effects on the stress distribution in structures. His earlier work was concerned with an analysis of the numerous factors controlling creep, and he has devoted attention to the influence of the ratio of surface area to volume on the magnitude and distribution of shrinkage. Subsequent work has been concerned with the application of the knowledge of creep and shrinkage to reinforced concrete structures, and he has obtained solutions to a variety of problems in the distribution of stress by means of an idealized Voigt model. The results of his researches have been communicated in papers published by the Institution of Civil Engineers and other technical bodies.

Prof. J. H. Smith

THE death took place on December 24 of Prof. J. H. Smith, formerly head. of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the College of Technology, Belfast. Prof. Smith studied at the Royal College of Science, London, and afterwards at Victoria University, Manchester, where he carried out important researches on the fatigue of metals under the late Prof. Osborne Reynolds. His first appointment was to Sunderland Technical College, where he was head of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering for a period of two years.

Prof. S. M. Dixon, O.B.E

PROF. STEPHEN MITCHELL DIXON, who died on March 25 at Nice at the age of seventy-four, was a leader in civil engineering education. Born in Dublin, he studied experimental physics and carried out research under Fitzgerald at Trinity College, and then qualified in civil engineering. After experience as contractor's engineer on railway works in England he was appointed to a newly established chair of civil engineering at Fredricton, New Brunswick, in 1892. Ten years later he moved to Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, and in 1905 was called to Birmingham to organize the Department of Civil Engineering. When, in the general re-organization following the formation of the Imperial College of Science and Technology, the Mechanical and Civil Department of the City and Guilds (Engineering) College was divided into two autonomous departments in 1912, Dixon was called to the chair of civil engineering there.
