A GAN-based fast focusing method for circular SAR images

Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar(CSAR) imaging is vulnerable to perturbations in the atmosphere and various other elements that can lead to position offset errors in the antenna's phase center as well as induce motion errors. Traditional phase compensation methods that operate in the time domain, such as Auto-regressive Back-projection (ARBP), typically require computation on a direction-by-direction basis, which can result in the considerable expenditure of time and memory resources. To address these challenges, thispaperintroduces a novel approach for focusing on CSAR images. This method leverages the training of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to directly achieve focus on CSAR sub-aperture images. Additionally, to counteract the network's tendency towards low-frequency preferences, the Auto-focus Frequency Loss (AFFL) is introduced. Moreover, to enhance the accuracy of focus position extraction, the Focus Position Feature Attention (FPFA) is proposed. These innovations, along with a new fusion strategy for the sub-aperture images post-focusing, have been experimentally validated, demonstrating significant improvements in the efficiency and accuracy of CSAR image focusing.

Position and Orientation System Error Analysis and Motion Compensation Method Based on Acceleration Information for Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) possesses the capability of multi-angle observation, breaking through the geometric observation constraints of traditional strip SAR and holding the potential for three-dimensional imaging. Its sub-wavelength level of planar resolution, resulting from a long synthetic aperture, makes CSAR highly valuable in the field of high-precision mapping. However, the motion geometry of CSAR is more intricate compared to traditional strip SAR, demanding high precision from navigation systems. The accumulation of errors over the long synthetic aperture time cannot be overlooked. CSAR exhibits significant coupling between the range and azimuth directions, making traditional motion compensation methods based on linear SAR unsuitable for direct application in CSAR. The dynamic nature of flight, with its continuous changes in attitude, introduces a significant deformation error between the non-rigidly connected Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the Global Positioning System (GPS). This deformation error makes it difficult to accurately obtain radar position information, resulting in imaging defocus. The research in this article uncovers a correlation between the deformation error and radial acceleration. Leveraging this insight, we propose utilizing radial acceleration to estimate residual motion errors. This paper delves into the analysis of Position and Orientation System (POS) errors, presenting a novel high-resolution CSAR motion compensation method based on airborne platform acceleration information. Once the system deformation parameters are calibrated using point targets, the deformation error can be directly calculated and compensated based on the acceleration information, ultimately resulting in the generation of a high-resolution image. In this paper, the effectiveness of the method is verified with airborne flight test data. This method can compensate for the deformation error and effectively improve the peak sidelobe ratio and integral sidelobe ratio of the target, thus improving image quality. The introduction of acceleration information provides new means and methods for high-resolution CSAR imaging.

Information Extraction and Three-Dimensional Contour Reconstruction of Vehicle Target Based on Multiple Different Pitch-Angle Observation Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Data

The circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) has the ability of all-round continuous observation and high-resolution imaging detection, and can obtain all-round scattering information and higher-resolution images of the observation scene, so as to realize the target information extraction and three-dimensional (3D) contour reconstruction of the observation targets. However, the existing methods are not accurate enough to extract the information of vehicle targets. Through the analysis of the vehicle target scattering model and CSAR image characteristics, this paper proposes a vehicle target information extraction and 3D contour reconstruction method based on multiple different pitch-angle observation CSAR data. The proposed method creatively utilizes the projection relationship of the vehicle in 2D CSAR imaging to reconstruct the 3D contour of the vehicle, without prior information. Firstly, the CSAR data obtained from multiple different pitch-angle observations are fully utilized, and the scattering points of odd-bounce reflection and even-bounce reflection echoes are extracted from the two-dimensional (2D) coherent CSAR images of the vehicle target. Secondly, the basic contour of the vehicle body is extracted from the scattering points of the even-bounce reflected echoes. Then, the geometric projection relationship of the “top–bottom shifting” effect of odd-bounce reflection is used to calculate the height and position information of the scattering points of odd-bounce reflection, so as to extract the multi-layer 3D contour of the vehicle target. Finally, the basic contour and the multi-layer 3D contour of the vehicle are fused to realize high-precision 3D contour reconstruction of the vehicle target. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by using the CVDomes simulation dataset of the American Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and the experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve high-precision information extraction and realize distinct 3D contour reconstruction of the vehicle target.

A Focusing Method of Buildings for Airborne Circular SAR

Airborne circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can realize high-resolution imaging of the scene over 360 degrees azimuth angle variation. Aiming at the problem of focusing of buildings for the airborne CSAR, this paper first analyzes the phase errors of CSAR buildings focusing in detail, and the analytic relationship between the scatterer height and azimuth focusing quality is deduced. Then, a focusing method of CSAR buildings based on the back projection algorithm is proposed. This method adopts the processing strategy of multi-layers imaging, and it is able to improve azimuth focusing quality of the buildings which have large height dimension. The proposed method is especially suitable for the high-resolution imaging and monitoring of the urban site with high-rise buildings in the airborne CSAR scenario. The correctness of the theoretical analysis and the validity of the proposed method are verified by using both simulation results and Ku-band airborne CSAR real data processing results.

A Feasibility Analysis of the Use of ISAR Training Data in Machine Learning-Based SAR ATR

Processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for automatic target recognition (ATR) is a critical application especially in military surveillance. In particular, numerous machine learning-based SAR ATR methods have been proposed for this task. However, data training and testing stages of all these methods are based on the exploitation of SAR signatures of the target under investigation. Considering the high variability of radar targets, obtaining such signature data is obviously a costly and time consuming process. In this study, therefore, a feasibility analysis of the use of inverse-SAR (ISAR) training data in SAR ATR has been made for the first time. The turntable ISAR and circular SAR images of three different vehicles are used in training and testing is performed by means of SAR images of three similar targets within the publicly available MSTAR dataset. Also, three most prominent machine learning methods, namely KNN, SVM and ANN are used in conjunction with three different feature extraction algorithms namely, GLRLM, GLSZM and GLCM. The obtained results reveal that the GLCM+SVM algorithm pair is the most effective model with 85% accuracy.

A Sub-Aperture Overlapping Imaging Method for Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Carried by a Small Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can obtain higher image resolution and more target information using 360° observation of the target. Due to the anisotropy of target scattering characteristics in the actual scene, the sub-aperture imaging method is usually used for CSAR imaging. However, the uniformly divided overlapping sub-aperture CSAR imaging algorithm only considers phase compensation, ignoring the effect of target scattering characteristics on echo amplitude. In CSAR imaging scenarios carried by small rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (SRUAVs), the size of the observed scene cannot be ignored compared to the distance between the target and the antenna and the effect of the anisotropy of the target scattered energy on the echo amplitude should be considered. In this paper, a sub-aperture CSAR imaging method based on adaptive overlapping sub-aperture is proposed. First, the boundary points of the sub-aperture are determined by analyzing the correlation coefficient and the variation coefficient of the energy function. Next, the overlapping sub-aperture division schemes are automatically generated by screening and combining the boundary points. The sub-aperture images are then generated by a Back Projection (BP) algorithm. Finally, sub-aperture image registration and incoherent superposition are used to generate the final CSAR image. Verified by the CSAR field echo data, the proposed method can realize imaging of the original echo data without the Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) observation data. Compared with the CSAR full-aperture BP imaging algorithm, the entropy of the image generated by the proposed method increased by 66.77%. Compared with the sub-aperture CSAR imaging algorithm, the entropy of the image generated by the proposed method was improved by 11.12%, retaining more details of the target, improving the target contour features, and enhancing the focusing effect.

A Novel Method for Building Contour Extraction Based on CSAR Images

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can obtain more complete scattering characteristics by observing the target with different azimuth angles. Therefore, extracting the complete structure of the target from CSAR images is of great significance for accurate interpretation. At present, the artificial target extraction based on CSAR images mostly uses anisotropic scattering features. For special targets such as buildings, as the walls and the ground form dihedral corner structures, there are also obvious strong scattering features such as double-scattering lines in SAR images. Therefore, combining the strong scattering features of buildings at specific aspects with anisotropic scattering characteristics at different aspects can obtain better extraction results, and how to extract these features accurately and efficiently is the key point. Based on this, this paper proposes a novel method for building contour extraction based on CSAR images. For strong scattering features, a fast fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm was used to extract them. For anisotropic scattering features, aspect entropy was used to characterize the anisotropy degree, and K-means clustering was combined to extract. Finally, a more accurate result is obtained by merging the two feature extraction results. In order to verify the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method, a lot of measured data acquired by the self-developed airborne L-band and Ku-band CSAR systems were processed. The experiments show that, compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, the proposed method can obtain more accurate results in less time.

Circular SAR Incoherent 3D Imaging with a NeRF-Inspired Method

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) has the potential to form 3D images with single-pass single-channel radar data, which is very time-efficient. This article proposes a volumetric neural renderer that utilizes CSAR 2D amplitude images to reconstruct the 3D power distribution of the imaged scene. The innovations are two-fold: Firstly, we propose a new SAR amplitude image formation model that establishes a linear mapping relationship between multi-look amplitude-squared SAR images and a real-valued 4D (spatial location (x, y, z) and azimuth angle θ) radar scattered field. Secondly, incorporating the proposed image formation model and SAR imaging geometry, we extend the neural radiance field (NeRF) methods to reconstruct the 4D radar scattered field using a set of 2D multi-aspect SAR images. Using real-world drone SAR data, we demonstrate our method for (1) creating realistic SAR imagery from arbitrary new viewpoints and (2) reconstructing high-precision 3D structures of the imaged scene.

Static High Target-Induced False Alarm Suppression in Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Moving Target Detection Based on Trajectory Features

The new mode of Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) has several advantages including multi-aspect and long-time observation, which can generate high-frame-rate image sequences to detect moving targets with a single-channel system. Nonetheless, due to CSAR being sensitive to 3D structures, static high targets are observed in scene display rotational motion within CSAR subaperture image sequences. Such motion can cause false alarms rising when utilizing image sequence-based moving target detection methods like logarithm background subtraction (LBS). To address this issue, this paper first thoroughly analyzes the moving target and static high target’s difference for the trajectory in an image sequence. Two new trajectory features of the rotation angle and moving distance are proposed to differentiate them. Based on the features, a new false alarm suppression method is proposed. The method first utilizes LBS to obtain coarse binary detection results comprising both moving and static high targets, then employs morphological filtering to eliminate noise. Next, DBSCAN and target tracking steps are employed to extract the trajectory features of the target and false alarm. Finally, false alarms are suppressed with trajectory-based feature discriminators to output detection results. The W-band CSAR open dataset is used to validate the proposed method’s effectiveness.

A Backprojection-Based Autofocus Imaging Method for Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can obtain higher image resolution and more target information through 360° observation of the target. However, CSAR is often subject to motion errors due to the sensor’s accuracy limitations and the unique trajectory of the system. The autofocusing back projection algorithm based on the optimization of image sharpness compensates for motion errors through phase-error estimation. This method can attain relatively good performance while assuming the same error for all pixels; it ignores the spatial variance of motion errors. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an autofocusing method based on the Prewitt operator and particle swarm optimization (PSO), which first extracts the subaperture image feature points as a new dataset using the Prewitt operator, estimates the radar slope error on the new dataset using PSO, and subsequently compensates the subaperture image. Finally, the subaperture images are synthesized using an image-alignment method. The results of both the simulated experiments and the measured data validate the effectiveness of this method.

Curved Synthetic Aperture Radar for Near-Field Terahertz Imaging

High resolution imaging technique will play an essential role in the future smart imaging applications to provide potential solutions for accurate detection, monitoring and classification of the target. The potential of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems to acquire high resolution images has opened new frontiers and led to its exploration in new applications. The conventional microwave radar imaging suffers limited range resolution in the sub-millimeter wave range and optical imaging methods are constrained by the diffraction limit. In the terahertz (THz) regime of the spectrum, the SAR systems could be operated in all the weather, all the time and are capable of penetrating through clouds, smoke, dust etc. to achieve high resolution images beyond the diffraction limit. The curved SAR presents a SAR system created by circularly encircling the target scene. The Circular SAR and Spiral SAR which are based on a circular and cylindrical spiral scanning trajectory, respectively are the scanning methods used for curved SAR. In this paper, we have explored a new toolbox that enables the rapid development of near-field THz-SAR imaging systems and generation of large near-field THz imaging scenarios with the goal to support and facilitate data driven research such as deep learning in the THz community through synthetically generated SAR images as well as its potential for THz based high resolution and 2D/3D near-field imaging application. Initially, the potential advantages of THz-SAR over Microwave SAR and optical imaging methods are presented. Further, a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar testbed is simulated in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) configuration for the target frequency band. Moreover, the circular and cylindrical SAR scanning methods are explored for near-field imaging of point targets to obtain 2D and 3D THz-SAR images, respectively. Also, the radar images are reconstructed using the Back Propagation and Polar Formatting Algorithms, focusing on short range applications like indoor environments. Finally, the SAR performance evaluation metrics are reported and a roadmap for future work is presented.

Range-Doppler Based Moving Target Image Trace Analysis Method in Circular SAR

The single channel Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) has the advantage of continuous surveillance of a fixed scene of interest, which can provide high frame rate image sequences to detect ground moving targets. Recent image-sequence-based CSAR moving target detection methods utilize the fact that the target signal moves fast in the image sequence. Knowledge of the target’s image trace(moving trace in the image sequence, which is equal to a target signature’s morphology in a full aperture CSAR image) can help design better detection methods. However, previous signature morphology studies are based on linear track geometry assumptions, which cannot handle CSAR’s nonlinear track. Hence, this paper proposes a new image trace method based on the range-Doppler principle. The proposed method can deduct the exact analytic function of an arbitrary moving target’s image trace in CSAR. The method assumes radar operates in side-looking mode and that the target moves on the ground plane. It combines the range-Doppler equations(i.e., iso-range and iso-Doppler relation) and Cartesian transformation between the ground and radar coordinate system to obtain the parametric functions of the image trace. Based on the method, three types of target motion (including linear and nonlinear motion) are analyzed. The proposed method is validated with both simulated and real data.

Target Scattering Feature Extraction Based on Parametric Model Using Multi-Aspect SAR Data

The multi-aspect SAR observation can obtain the backscattering information of the illuminated scene target. There are targets with different structures in the scene, and their backscattering responses are also different. Using backscattering amplitude information to analyze the differences between targets is a conventional method. For point target types, one-dimensional backscattering curves can be used to analyze scattering characteristics, but it is difficult to analyze the overall structure of the target. Therefore, it is necessary to perform statistical analysis on the backscattering information combinating with the multi-aspect target area, and establish parameters to model the target area. In this paper, the algorithm uses the G0 distribution based on expectation maximization (EM) to fit the target area of the SAR scene. For different target types in the scene, the β and σ parameters obtained by the model combined with the backscattering amplitude information are used to perform the target. The results show that full-target in multi-aspect SAR image can be differentiated by two parameters. The scattering of partial-target slices can be characterized using two parameters (amplitude difference from surrounding points, scattering energy). The parametric model quantitatively characterizes the scattering feature of the target level, and the parameters changing corresponds to the change of the target image feature. C-band circular SAR data is used to validate our method. The experimental results give the parameter representation with sampling window based on the analysis of the target scattering, and give parameter estimates to characterize the partial target scattering.

Radar-Based Microwave Breast Imaging Using Neurocomputational Models

In this study, neurocomputational models are proposed for the acquisition of radar-based microwave images of breast tumors using deep neural networks (DNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) technique for radar-based microwave imaging (MWI) was utilized to generate 1000 numerical simulations for randomly generated scenarios. The scenarios contain information such as the number, size, and location of tumors for each simulation. Then, a dataset of 1000 distinct simulations with complex values based on the scenarios was built. Consequently, a real-valued DNN (RV-DNN) with five hidden layers, a real-valued CNN (RV-CNN) with seven convolutional layers, and a real-valued combined model (RV-MWINet) consisting of CNN and U-Net sub-models were built and trained to generate the radar-based microwave images. While the proposed RV-DNN, RV-CNN, and RV-MWINet models are real-valued, the MWINet model is restructured with complex-valued layers (CV-MWINet), resulting in a total of four models. For the RV-DNN model, the training and test errors in terms of mean squared error (MSE) are found to be 103.400 and 96.395, respectively, whereas for the RV-CNN model, the training and test errors are obtained to be 45.283 and 153.818. Due to the fact that the RV-MWINet model is a combined U-Net model, the accuracy metric is analyzed. The proposed RV-MWINet model has training and testing accuracy of 0.9135 and 0.8635, whereas the CV-MWINet model has training and testing accuracy of 0.991 and 1.000, respectively. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), universal quality index (UQI), and structural similarity index (SSIM) metrics were also evaluated for the images generated by the proposed neurocomputational models. The generated images demonstrate that the proposed neurocomputational models can be successfully utilized for radar-based microwave imaging, especially for breast imaging.

A Channel Imbalance Calibration Scheme with Distributed Targets for Circular Quad-Polarization SAR with Reciprocal Crosstalk

As polarimetric antennas can be isolated through excellent electronic frameworks in circular quad-polarization (CQP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, cross-polarization (x-pol) and co-polarization (co-pol) channel imbalances are more challenging and essential to calibrate than crosstalk in polarimetric calibration (PolCAL). In uncalibrated CQP SAR images without corner reflectors (CRs), the reciprocity and reflection symmetry assumptions of the distributed targets are commonly used to estimate the x-pol and co-pol channel imbalances, respectively. To suppress the influence of additive noise on determining channel imbalances through distributed targets, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distributed targets should be obtained from the x-pol and co-pol channels of the CQP SAR images: namely, surface-dominated and volume-dominated targets. However, some reflection symmetry assumptions used in the existing calibration literature have poor applicability with volume-dominated targets, resulting in unsatisfactory estimation results for the co-pol channel imbalance phase. In this paper, we assess the priority of the reflection symmetry properties of volume-dominated targets used to calibrate the co-pol channel imbalance phase in CQP SAR data synthesized from linear quad-polarization data of ALOS, GF-3, and RADARSAT-2. In the theoretical part, high-priority reflection symmetry (termed semireflection symmetry) assumptions are confirmed as the most suitable for estimating the co-pol channel imbalance phase, and were selected to develop an algorithm for estimating the co-pol channel imbalance phase. Furthermore, based on the novel method for estimating the co-pol channel imbalance phase, a channel imbalance calibration scheme is proposed for CQP SAR systems with reciprocal crosstalk, including extracting surface-dominated and volume-dominated targets, and estimating and filtering channel imbalances. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme with CRs in simulated CQP SAR images. The experimental results show that the calibration scheme is an effective workflow for estimating channel imbalances in CQP SAR systems with reciprocal crosstalk.

A Novel Motion Compensation Method Applicable to Ground Cartesian Back-Projection Algorithm for Airborne Circular SAR

The Ground-Cartesian factorized back-projection (G-CFBP) is an efficient time-domain processing algorithm without image interpolation, and can realize accurate imaging for curved trajectory synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Its superiority shows good potential in airborne circular SAR (CSAR) imaging. However, the motion compensation (MoCo) based on ground Cartesian back-projection (GCBP) in the airborne CSAR is still a challenge. There are two main problems: one is that the existence of the image spectrum aliasing makes the processing of the phase error estimation inaccurate; the other is that the mapping relationship of the phase error between the image spectrum domain and the azimuth time domain still needs to be studied within GCBP processing chain. To tackle the above two problems, a novel MoCo method applicable to the GCBP algorithm is proposed and can be mainly divided into two steps: the first step is to remove the sub-aperture image spectrum aliasing by a spectrum compression operation; the second step is to establish an analytical phase error structure, which includes an auto-selection criterion of the effective support region for GCBP image. The first step ensures the accuracy of the phase error estimation, and the second step establishes the inverse-mapping relationship of the phase error between the image spectrum and azimuth time. These two procedures are both vital in improving the accuracy and robustness of the GCBP-based MoCo for the CSAR imaging. The processed results of simulated and real data are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Novel Imaging-Based Target Detection and Parameter Estimation Scheme for Airborne Multichannel Circular Stripmap SAR

Airborne multichannel circular stripmap synthetic aperture radar (CSSAR)-ground moving target indication (GMTI) has drawn increasing attention in wide-area surveillance, reconnaissance and traffic monitoring due to its short revisit times. In this paper, a novel scheme for CSSAR-GMTI systems is proposed to offer high-resolution focusing of moving targets and enable efficient detection and accurate parameter estimation, which are ensured by integrating moving target imaging with a space-time adaptive processing clutter suppression step. The presented scheme develops a target imaging algorithm that forms SAR images focused on a particular 2-D motion parameter to maximize target signal energy and recover its high resolution. Moreover, benefiting from the suitable phase compensation designed in the 2-D frequency domain, moving targets can finally be properly focused in the SAR image without displacement and their parameters can be uniquely determined. Experiments on an emulated radar dataset are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
