Information Extraction and Three-Dimensional Contour Reconstruction of Vehicle Target Based on Multiple Different Pitch-Angle Observation Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Data

The circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) has the ability of all-round continuous observation and high-resolution imaging detection, and can obtain all-round scattering information and higher-resolution images of the observation scene, so as to realize the target information extraction and three-dimensional (3D) contour reconstruction of the observation targets. However, the existing methods are not accurate enough to extract the information of vehicle targets. Through the analysis of the vehicle target scattering model and CSAR image characteristics, this paper proposes a vehicle target information extraction and 3D contour reconstruction method based on multiple different pitch-angle observation CSAR data. The proposed method creatively utilizes the projection relationship of the vehicle in 2D CSAR imaging to reconstruct the 3D contour of the vehicle, without prior information. Firstly, the CSAR data obtained from multiple different pitch-angle observations are fully utilized, and the scattering points of odd-bounce reflection and even-bounce reflection echoes are extracted from the two-dimensional (2D) coherent CSAR images of the vehicle target. Secondly, the basic contour of the vehicle body is extracted from the scattering points of the even-bounce reflected echoes. Then, the geometric projection relationship of the “top–bottom shifting” effect of odd-bounce reflection is used to calculate the height and position information of the scattering points of odd-bounce reflection, so as to extract the multi-layer 3D contour of the vehicle target. Finally, the basic contour and the multi-layer 3D contour of the vehicle are fused to realize high-precision 3D contour reconstruction of the vehicle target. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by using the CVDomes simulation dataset of the American Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and the experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve high-precision information extraction and realize distinct 3D contour reconstruction of the vehicle target.

A Feasibility Analysis of the Use of ISAR Training Data in Machine Learning-Based SAR ATR

Processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for automatic target recognition (ATR) is a critical application especially in military surveillance. In particular, numerous machine learning-based SAR ATR methods have been proposed for this task. However, data training and testing stages of all these methods are based on the exploitation of SAR signatures of the target under investigation. Considering the high variability of radar targets, obtaining such signature data is obviously a costly and time consuming process. In this study, therefore, a feasibility analysis of the use of inverse-SAR (ISAR) training data in SAR ATR has been made for the first time. The turntable ISAR and circular SAR images of three different vehicles are used in training and testing is performed by means of SAR images of three similar targets within the publicly available MSTAR dataset. Also, three most prominent machine learning methods, namely KNN, SVM and ANN are used in conjunction with three different feature extraction algorithms namely, GLRLM, GLSZM and GLCM. The obtained results reveal that the GLCM+SVM algorithm pair is the most effective model with 85% accuracy.

A Sub-Aperture Overlapping Imaging Method for Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Carried by a Small Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can obtain higher image resolution and more target information using 360° observation of the target. Due to the anisotropy of target scattering characteristics in the actual scene, the sub-aperture imaging method is usually used for CSAR imaging. However, the uniformly divided overlapping sub-aperture CSAR imaging algorithm only considers phase compensation, ignoring the effect of target scattering characteristics on echo amplitude. In CSAR imaging scenarios carried by small rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (SRUAVs), the size of the observed scene cannot be ignored compared to the distance between the target and the antenna and the effect of the anisotropy of the target scattered energy on the echo amplitude should be considered. In this paper, a sub-aperture CSAR imaging method based on adaptive overlapping sub-aperture is proposed. First, the boundary points of the sub-aperture are determined by analyzing the correlation coefficient and the variation coefficient of the energy function. Next, the overlapping sub-aperture division schemes are automatically generated by screening and combining the boundary points. The sub-aperture images are then generated by a Back Projection (BP) algorithm. Finally, sub-aperture image registration and incoherent superposition are used to generate the final CSAR image. Verified by the CSAR field echo data, the proposed method can realize imaging of the original echo data without the Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) observation data. Compared with the CSAR full-aperture BP imaging algorithm, the entropy of the image generated by the proposed method increased by 66.77%. Compared with the sub-aperture CSAR imaging algorithm, the entropy of the image generated by the proposed method was improved by 11.12%, retaining more details of the target, improving the target contour features, and enhancing the focusing effect.

A Novel Method for Building Contour Extraction Based on CSAR Images

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can obtain more complete scattering characteristics by observing the target with different azimuth angles. Therefore, extracting the complete structure of the target from CSAR images is of great significance for accurate interpretation. At present, the artificial target extraction based on CSAR images mostly uses anisotropic scattering features. For special targets such as buildings, as the walls and the ground form dihedral corner structures, there are also obvious strong scattering features such as double-scattering lines in SAR images. Therefore, combining the strong scattering features of buildings at specific aspects with anisotropic scattering characteristics at different aspects can obtain better extraction results, and how to extract these features accurately and efficiently is the key point. Based on this, this paper proposes a novel method for building contour extraction based on CSAR images. For strong scattering features, a fast fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm was used to extract them. For anisotropic scattering features, aspect entropy was used to characterize the anisotropy degree, and K-means clustering was combined to extract. Finally, a more accurate result is obtained by merging the two feature extraction results. In order to verify the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method, a lot of measured data acquired by the self-developed airborne L-band and Ku-band CSAR systems were processed. The experiments show that, compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, the proposed method can obtain more accurate results in less time.

A Novel Motion Compensation Method Applicable to Ground Cartesian Back-Projection Algorithm for Airborne Circular SAR

The Ground-Cartesian factorized back-projection (G-CFBP) is an efficient time-domain processing algorithm without image interpolation, and can realize accurate imaging for curved trajectory synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Its superiority shows good potential in airborne circular SAR (CSAR) imaging. However, the motion compensation (MoCo) based on ground Cartesian back-projection (GCBP) in the airborne CSAR is still a challenge. There are two main problems: one is that the existence of the image spectrum aliasing makes the processing of the phase error estimation inaccurate; the other is that the mapping relationship of the phase error between the image spectrum domain and the azimuth time domain still needs to be studied within GCBP processing chain. To tackle the above two problems, a novel MoCo method applicable to the GCBP algorithm is proposed and can be mainly divided into two steps: the first step is to remove the sub-aperture image spectrum aliasing by a spectrum compression operation; the second step is to establish an analytical phase error structure, which includes an auto-selection criterion of the effective support region for GCBP image. The first step ensures the accuracy of the phase error estimation, and the second step establishes the inverse-mapping relationship of the phase error between the image spectrum and azimuth time. These two procedures are both vital in improving the accuracy and robustness of the GCBP-based MoCo for the CSAR imaging. The processed results of simulated and real data are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Local Road Area Extraction in CSAR Imagery Exploiting Improved Curvilinear Structure Detector

Road extraction is an important part of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image interpretation. In recent years, circular SAR (CSAR) has attracted extensive attention from researchers owing to its ability of 360-degree observation. Due to the unique imaging geometry of CSAR, CSAR images contain more complete road information. However, the curvilinear-structured appearance of roads in CSAR images and the complexity of the scene result in difficulties in the road extraction. The Curvilinear structure detector (CSD) is capable of extracting the curvilinear structures with a specific width from complicated image scene. Based on the traditional CSD, an improved CSD (ICSD) for local road area extraction from CSAR images is introduced in this paper. First, by adopting ICSD, the edges of a CSAR image and centerlines of local roads are extracted, as well as their direction. Second, the local roads are obtained by geometrical and radiometrical rules. Finally, the missing intersections and edge pixels are repaired to acquire high-precision and high-quality extraction results of local road area. The experimental results on different band CSAR images reveal that the proposed method exhibit enhanced performance than the three state-of-the-art methods.

Time-Frequency Reversion-Based Spectrum Analysis Method and Its Applications in Radar Imaging

Spectrum analysis (SA) plays an important role in radar signal processing, especially in radar imaging algorithm design. Because it is usually hard to obtain the analytical expression of spectrum by the Fourier integral directly, principle of stationary phase (POSP)-based SA is applied to approximate this integral. However, POSP requires the phase of the signal to vary rapidly, which is not the case in circular synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and turntable inverse SAR (ISAR). To solve this problem, a new SA method based on time-frequency reversion (TFRSA) is proposed, which utilizes the relationship of the Fourier transform pairs and their corresponding signal phases. In addition, the connection between the imaging geometry and time-frequency relationship is also analyzed and utilized to help solve the time-frequency reversion. When the TFRSA is applied to the linear trajectory SAR, the obtained spectrum expression is the same as the result of POSP. When it is applied to ISAR, the spectrum expressions of near-field and far-field are derived and their difference is found to be position-independent. Based on this finding, an extended polar format algorithm (EPFA) for near-field ISAR imaging is proposed, which can solve the distortion and defocusing problems caused by traditional ISAR imaging algorithms. When it is applied to the circular SAR (CSAR), a new and efficient imaging method based on EPFA is proposed, which can solve the low efficiency problem of conventional BP-based CSAR imaging algorithms. The simulations and real data processing results are provided to validate the effectiveness of proposed method.

Orientation Estimation of Surface Cracks in Metals Based on Intensity Maximization of Polarimetric Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

In this article, we propose a novel method of estimation of crack orientation on a metallic surface using linearly polarized circular synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. We modeled a crack using a thin linear scatterer and considered the rotation of polarization basis vectors that were designed to match a predefined orientation vector corresponding to a temporary estimate of the orientation of the linear scatterer. The radar image intensity was expected to be a maximum when the specified orientation vector exactly matched the true scatterer orientation angle; therefore, to estimate the orientation of the scatterer, we aimed to obtain the maximum intensity of the image by varying the orientation vector. We validated the proposed scheme of estimation via a numerical electromagnetic simulation using the method of moments (MoM) and laboratory measurements carried out in an anechoic chamber. In this experiment, a metallic plate with slits was used as a simple surface crack model and the root-mean-square error and maximum error of the angular estimation were 1.9° and 5.1°, respectively.

Study of the Airborne Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Technology

Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) is a novel imaging mode, which has the advantages of all-directional observation, high spatial resolution, and three-dimensional imaging. With the development of airborne CSAR imaging techniques, it has become one of the effective methods for key point area observation. This paper introduces works on airborne CSAR imaging techniques performed by our research team in recent years, including airborne CSAR imaging mode, spatial resolution evaluation, two-dimensional CSAR imaging, three-dimensional target image reconstruction based on a single CSAR, and three-dimensional holographic SAR imaging. In this paper, experimental results based on raw data acquired using airborne CSAR systems with P and X bands are presented. The obtained research results prove the effectivity and practicability of the airborne CSAR imaging mode. The content of this paper is based on a keynote speech presented by the author at the Fifth Young Scientists Forum of Journal of Radars on August 15, 2019.

CNN-Based Vehicle Target Recognition with Residual Compensation for Circular SAR Imaging

The contour thinning algorithm is an imaging algorithm for circular synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that can obtain clear target contours and has been successfully used for circular SAR (CSAR) target recognition. However, the contour thinning imaging algorithm loses some details when thinning the contour, which needs to be improved. This paper presents an improved contour thinning imaging algorithm based on residual compensation. In this algorithm, the residual image is obtained by subtracting the contour thinning image from the traditional backprojection image. Then, the compensation information is extracted from the residual image by repeatedly using the gravitation-based speckle reduction algorithm. Finally, the extracted compensation image is superimposed on the contour thinning image to obtain a compensated contour thinning image. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated on the Gotcha dataset. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to recognize the target image. The experimental results show that the image after compensation has a higher target recognition accuracy than the image before compensation.

Multilayered Circular Dielectric Structure SAR Imaging Based on Compressed Sensing for FOD Detection in NDT

This article presents a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging algorithm based on a compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction approach, which is suitable for the detection of foreign object debris (FOD) located in a multilayered circular dielectric structure for nondestructive testing (NDT) application. The method proposed considers the refraction model at the boundaries between each two adjacent layers. This method is different from free space as imaging background assumption in previous CS-based SAR imaging applications. In addition, the prior information that the FOD is displayed with a sparse distribution is applied. Therefore, the method proposed could obtain better focus on effectiveness than time-reversal imaging algorithm with the same measurement points. Further, the CST simulations and the experiment were conducted by taking two small metallic targets as FOD embedded in the three-layered circular dielectric structure. The results of simulations and experiment demonstrated that the proposed method has better effect than previous methods.

DEM Generation With a Scale Factor Using Multi-Aspect SAR Imagery Applying Radargrammetry

Digital elevation model (DEM) generation using multi-aspect synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery applying radargrammetry has become a hotspot. The traditional radargrammetric method is to solve the rigorous radar projection equations to obtain the three dimensional coordinates of targets. In this paper, we propose a new DEM generation method based on the offset between multi-aspect images formed on ground plane. The ground object will be projected to different positions from different viewing aspect angles if the height of object is not equal to the height of imaging plane. The linear relationship between the offset of imaging positions and height of the object is derived and scale factor is obtained finally. Height information can be retrieved from offset of imaging positions directly through the DEM extraction model presented in this paper. Thus the solution to nonlinear equations point by point can be avoided. Real C band airborne circular SAR images is used to verify the proposed approach. When extracted DEM applied in multi-aspect imaging process, superimposition of multi-aspect images will no longer be defocusing and can achieve finer observation of the scanned scene.

Signal Characteristics Analysis and Intra-Pulse Motion Compensation for FMCW CSAR

The combination of frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) technology and circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) would pave the way for the development of the microminiature unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) earth observation application. Regarding the FMCW CSAR imaging process, the stop-and-go approximation is no longer effective due to the longer pulse duration. In addition, the signal characteristics of FMCW CSAR with higher frequency band and higher resolution need to be further studied. Aiming at millimeter-wave FMCW CSAR imaging, the signal models of FMCW CSAR in the time domain and wavenumber domain are first derived in this work. Then, the signal characteristics including the two-dimensional (2-D) wavenumber spectrum, the spectrum support region, the point spread function, and the resolution are analyzed. Moreover, the effects of intra-pulse movement are analyzed, including the range offset error, the main lobe broadening, and the additional phase error in the range dimension, as well as the extra first-order and second-order phase errors in the 2-D wavenumber domain. Based on the intra-pulse motion analysis, two criterions are provided to determine whether the intra-pulse movement of FMCW CSAR is negligible. An improved back projection (BP) algorithm compensating the intra-pulse motion in the range domain and another algorithm combining the traditional BP and compensation the intra-pulse motion in the wavenumber domain are proposed. Simulation results verify the correctness of the FMCW CSAR signal characteristics analysis and the effectiveness of the intra-pulse movement compensation methods.

Analysis of the Azimuth Ambiguity and Imaging Area Restriction for Circular SAR Based on the Back-Projection Algorithm.

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) has a 360° observation capability on the central observation scenario. A typical way to process CSAR imaging is to cut data into small sub-apertures because most targets are only coherent at a very small observation angle. There are many sub-aperture imaging methods after development in recent years. The back-projection algorithm is widely used because it is simple and can be applied to an arbitrary trajectory. Because of the limitation of the Nyquist sampling frequency and influence of the antenna sidelobe, azimuth ambiguity is a phenomenon that may occur in the radar imaging process. The existing researches typically choose the back-projection (BP) imaging area according to the SAR platform flight path and the antenna beam width. The limitation of the CSAR imaging area and its azimuth ambiguity region are rarely analyzed theoretically. This paper focus on the sub-aperture imaging of CSAR, based on the BP algorithm, which derives the relationship of azimuth ambiguity with CSAR parameters such as the pause repeat frequency (PRF), slant range angle, velocity of radar platform, etc. This paper proposes an equation for the calculation of the azimuth ambiguity region and analyzes the limitations, which provides theoretical support for CSAR parameter design, imaging area selection, and azimuth ambiguity analysis.

Airborne Circular W-Band SAR for Multiple Aspect Urban Site Monitoring

This paper presents a strategy for urban site monitoring by very high-resolution circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) imaging of multiple aspects. We analytically derive the limits of coherent azimuth processing for nonplanar objects in CSAR if no digital surface model (DSM) is available. The result indicates the level of maximum achievable resolution of these objects in this geometry. The difficulty of constantly illuminating a specific scene in full aspect mode (360°) for such small wavelengths is solved by a hardware- and software-side integration of the radar in a mechanical tracking mode. This results in the first demonstration of full aspect airborne subaperture CSAR images collected with an active frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar at W-band. We describe the geometry and the implementation of the real-time beam-steering mode and evaluate resulting effects in the CSAR processing chain. The physical properties in W-band allow the use of extremely short subapertures in length while generating high azimuthal bandwidths. We use this feature to generate full aspect image stacks for CSAR video monitoring in very high frame rates. This technique offers the capability of detecting and observing moving objects in single channel data by shadow tracking. Due to the relatively strong echo of roads, the shadows of moving cars are rich in contrast. The image stack is further evaluated to present wide angular anisotropic properties of targets and first results on multiple aspect image fusion. Both topics show huge potential for further investigations in terms of image analysis and scene classification.

Modulus Stretch-Based Circular SAR Imaging with Contour Thinning

This paper presents a modulus stretch-based circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging method. This method improves the traditional backprojection algorithm for circular SAR imaging, and introduces the modulus stretch transformation function in the imaging process. By performing a modulus stretch transformation on the intermediate results, the target contour in the final imaging result is thinner and clearer. A thinner and clearer contour can help to increase the recognizability of the target and provide a basis for subsequent target recognition. The proposed method is demonstrated on the line target imaging simulations and Gothca dataset.

Linear‐FM random radar waveform compressed by dechirping method

This research proposes a novel linear frequency modulation (Linear-FM) random radar waveform and introduces a dechirping compression method. The proposed linear-FM random waveforms possess a thumbtack ambiguity function and low cross-correlation properties which are good for fighting against digital radio frequency memory repeat jammer similar to random noise waveforms. The dechirping compression method for the proposed linear-FM random radar waveform works by mixing the random radar echo signal with a local reference linear frequency modulated (LFM) signal to reduce the echo bandwidth and thus allows to use low-speed analogue-to-digital converter similar to the dechirping method for LFM waveform compression. Both numerical simulation and high-resolution circular synthetic aperture radar imaging experiment are conducted to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed waveform and the proposed dechirping compression method.

Retrieval of Polarimetric Azimuthal Angular Characteristics via the Application of Target Decomposition to Spectral Domain Circular SAR Images

In this paper, we discuss the application of polarimetric target decomposition (TD) theorems to circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) images to retrieve the polarimetric azimuthal angular characteristics of the targets. In CSAR systems, radar-carrying aircraft moves along a circular path. The antenna beam is pointed toward the center of the circular path during the data acquisition to irradiate the spotlighted area from various azimuthal or aspect angles. Therefore, the resultant polarimetric CSAR images contain information about the polarimetric scattering mechanisms of the targets at each aspect angles. To recover this information, we propose the use of spectral decomposition of CSAR images in combination with several TD algorithms. The spectral domain CSAR images can be viewed as the azimuthal angular spectrum images. Thus, the application of TD algorithms to the spectral domain images is expected to be able to obtain the angular dependence and polarimetric scattering properties of the targets simultaneously. We carried out a simple numerical simulation and an indoor laboratory experiment to validate the proposed TD scheme.

Moving Target Tracking Based on Improved GMPHD Filter in Circular SAR System

A new moving target tracking method based on an improved Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GMPHD) filter in a circular synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is proposed. In order to obtain the temporal dynamic behavior of moving targets in a SAR scene, a multiple-target observation is first extracted from a sequence of clutter-suppressed subaperture circular SAR images. Then, a new multiple-target tracking model for the circular SAR system is established based on the dynamic behavior of moving targets. An improved labeled GMPHD filter with an adaptive target birth intensity is proposed to realize the moving target detection and tracking in a strong ground clutter environment, which is suitable for the circular SAR system. This method can not only provide accurate estimates for the number and states of moving targets but also can extract their trajectories. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulations and experimental Gotcha data.

Resolution-Based Analysis for Optimizing Subaperture Measurements in Circular SAR Imaging

Circular geometries are often encountered in nondestructive testing and evaluation applications. Circular synthetic aperture radar imaging technique, capable of producing high-resolution images, has great utility for this purpose. However, in many such applications, scanning only a portion of the circular geometry (i.e., scanning domain), called the subaperture, may only be possible or sufficient for a particular inspection need. Consequently, in subaperture imaging, for an imaging aspect angle and aspect angle measurement interval, we must determine the expected image resolution. In this paper, for an arbitrary area of interest, we analyze the image spatial resolution obtained from a generally defined aspect angle and aspect angle measurement interval. Using resolution as the criteria, we use this method to determine the boundary between small and large subapertures, which also show to produce markedly different range and cross-range resolutions as a function of aspect angle and aspect angle measurement interval. Moreover, the optimum aspect angle and aspect angle measurement interval for this fixed area of interest are defined based on these analyses. Finally, the results of these analyses and images obtained from simulations are compared and corroborated with relevant experimental results at X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz).
