The Measurement of Contrast Sensitivity in Near Vision: The Use of a Digital System vs. a Conventional Printed Test

In recent years, there has been intense development of digital diagnostic tests for vision. All of these tests must be validated for clinical use. The current study enrolled 51 healthy individuals (age 19–72 years) in which achromatic contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in near vision was measured with the printed Vistech VCTS test (Stereo Optical Co., Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and the Optopad-CSF (developed by our research group to be used on an iPad). Likewise, chromatic CSF was evaluated with a digital test. Statistically significant differences between tests were only found for the two higher spatial frequencies evaluated (p = 0.012 and <0.001, respectively). The mean achromatic index of contrast sensitivity (ICS) was 0.02 ± 1.07 and −0.76 ± 1.63 for the Vistech VCTS and Optopad tests, respectively (p < 0.001). The ranges of agreement between tests were 0.55, 0.76, 0.78, and 0.69 log units for the spatial frequencies of 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 cpd, respectively. The mean chromatic ICS values were −20.56 ± 0.96 and −0.16 ± 0.99 for the CSF-T and CSF-D plates, respectively (p < 0.001). Furthermore, better achromatic, red–green, and blue–yellow CSF values were found in the youngest groups. The digital test allows the fast measurement of near-achromatic and chromatic CSF using a colorimetrically calibrated iPad, but the achromatic measures cannot be used interchangeably with those obtained with a conventional printed test.

Riemannian color difference metric for spatial sinusoidal color variations

Several studies report on the sensitivity of human vision to static spatial sinusoidal achromatic and chromatic contrast variations. However, a Riemannian color difference metric, which includes the spatial and colorimetric properties of sinusoidal gratings, is lacking. Such a metric is important for various applications. Here we report on the development of a new Riemannian metric, for the prediction of detection ellipsoids in color space, for spatial sinusoidal gratings as a function of the grating’s size, spatial frequency, luminance and chromaticity. The metric is based on measurements and models of achromatic and isoluminous chromatic contrast sensitivity functions available in literature, and the Riemannian metric for split fields which we reported earlier. We find adequate agreement with various data sets of experimental achromatic and isoluminous chromatic contrast sensitivity functions and with experimentally determined threshold ellipses of isoluminous chromatic Gabor gratings.

Chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Functions and Colour Discrimination in Smoker Patients.

In this study, effects of smoking on colour vision with the Farnsworth–Munsell 100 Hue test (FM100h) and achromatic (A), red-green (RG), and blue-yellow (BY) contrast sensitivity functions were evaluated. In total, 50 non-smoker controls and 25 smokers, divided into two groups (group 1, less than 10 cigarettes per day, with 15 patients, and group 2, >10 cigarettes per day, with 10 patients) took part in the experiments. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), FM100h, and A, RG, and BY contrast sensitivity functions were measured. Total and partial RG and BY error scores (TES and PTES) and colour axis index (CA) were used in the analysis. No differences between smoker and non-smoker groups were found in BCVA, CA and A and BY contrast sensitivity, but TES and PTES values and RG contrast sensitivity at 1 cpd were statistically different. Differences between smoker groups were not significant. Error scores in smokers were positively correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day, and in BY also with age. Tobacco caused discrimination losses in both chromatic mechanisms but affected the red-green pathway more than the blue-yellow, and therefore, a partial RG score of FM100h test seems to be a good predictor of smoker colour deficiencies.

Are Spatial Chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Band-pass or Lowpass Functions?

The goal of this research is to generate high quality chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF) over a wide range of spatial frequencies from 0.06 to 3.84 cycles per degree (cpd) surrounding 5 CIE proposed colour centres (white, red, yellow, green and blue) to study colour difference. At each centre, 6 colour directions at each of 7 frequencies were sampled, from 0.06 to 3.84 cycles per degree (cpd) corresponding to the number of cycles: from 2.3 to 144.4 respectively. A threshold method based on forced-choice stair-case was adopted to investigate the just noticeable (threshold) colour difference. The results revealed that the chromatic CSF under the present experimental conditions having many lower spatial frequencies covering five colour centres to be band pass, whereas previous results indicated it was low pass. However, this could be caused by the present experimental conditions such as fixed-size stimuli and constant luminance. The new chromatic CSF for R-G and Y-B channels were also developed.

Color illusions also deceive CNNs for low-level vision tasks: Analysis and implications

The study of visual illusions has proven to be a very useful approach in vision science. In this work we start by showing that, while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained for low-level visual tasks in natural images may be deceived by brightness and color illusions, some network illusions can be inconsistent with the perception of humans. Next, we analyze where these similarities and differences may come from. On one hand, the proposed linear eigenanalysis explains the overall similarities: in simple CNNs trained for tasks like denoising or deblurring, the linear version of the network has center-surround receptive fields, and global transfer functions are very similar to the human achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity functions in human-like opponent color spaces. These similarities are consistent with the long-standing hypothesis that considers low-level visual illusions as a by-product of the optimization to natural environments. Specifically, here human-like features emerge from error minimization. On the other hand, the observed differences must be due to the behavior of the human visual system not explained by the linear approximation. However, our study also shows that more ‘flexible’ network architectures, with more layers and a higher degree of nonlinearity, may actually have a worse capability of reproducing visual illusions. This implies, in line with other works in the vision science literature, a word of caution on using CNNs to study human vision: on top of the intrinsic limitations of the L + NL formulation of artificial networks to model vision, the nonlinear behavior of flexible architectures may easily be markedly different from that of the visual system.

A Normative Data Set for the Clinical Assessment of Achromatic and Chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Using a qCSF Approach.

The measurement of achromatic sensitivity has been an important tool for monitoring subtle changes in vision as the result of disease or response to therapy. In this study, we aimed to provide a normative data set for achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity functions within a common cone contrast space using an abbreviated measurement approach suitable for clinical practice. In addition, we aimed to provide comparisons of achromatic and chromatic binocular summation across spatial frequency. We estimated monocular cone contrast sensitivity functions (CCSFs) using a quick Contrast Sensitivity Function (qCSF) approach for achromatic as well as isoluminant, L/M cone opponent, and S cone opponent stimuli in a healthy population of 51 subjects. We determined the binocular CCSFs for achromatic and chromatic vision to evaluate the degree of binocular summation across spatial frequency for these three different mechanisms in a subset of 20 subjects. Each data set shows consistent contrast sensitivity across the population. They highlight the extremely high cone contrast sensitivity of L/M cone opponency compared with the S-cone and achromatic responses. We also find that the two chromatic sensitivities are correlated across the healthy population. In addition, binocular summation for all mechanisms depends strongly on stimulus spatial frequency. This study, using an approach well suited to the clinic, is the first to provide a comparative normative data set for the chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity functions, yielding quantitative comparisons of achromatic, L/M cone opponent, and S cone opponent chromatic sensitivities as a function of spatial frequency.

Stereo chromatic contrast sensitivity model to blue-yellow gratings.

As a fundamental metric of human visual system (HVS), contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is typically measured by sinusoidal gratings at the detection of thresholds for psychophysically defined cardinal channels: luminance, red-green, and blue-yellow. Chromatic CSF, which is a quick and valid index to measure human visual performance and various retinal diseases in two-dimensional (2D) space, can not be directly applied into the measurement of human stereo visual performance. And no existing perception model considers the influence of chromatic CSF of inclined planes on depth perception in three-dimensional (3D) space. The main aim of this research is to extend traditional chromatic contrast sensitivity characteristics to 3D space and build a model applicable in 3D space, for example, strengthening stereo quality of 3D images. This research also attempts to build a vision model or method to check human visual characteristics of stereo blindness. In this paper, CRT screen was clockwise and anti-clockwise rotated respectively to form the inclined planes. Four inclined planes were selected to investigate human chromatic vision in 3D space and contrast threshold of each inclined plane was measured with 18 observers. Stimuli were isoluminant blue-yellow sinusoidal gratings. Horizontal spatial frequencies ranged from 0.05 to 5 c/d. Contrast sensitivity was calculated as the inverse function of the pooled cone contrast threshold. According to the relationship between spatial frequency of inclined plane and horizontal spatial frequency, the chromatic contrast sensitivity characteristics in 3D space have been modeled based on the experimental data. The results show that the proposed model can well predicted human chromatic contrast sensitivity characteristics in 3D space.

The influence of L-opsin gene polymorphisms and neural ageing on spatio-chromatic contrast sensitivity in 20–71 year olds

Chromatic contrast sensitivity may be a more sensitive measure of an individual’s visual function than achromatic contrast sensitivity. Here, the first aim was to quantify individual- and age-related variations in chromatic contrast sensitivity to a range of spatial frequencies for stimuli along two complementary directions in color space. The second aim was to examine whether polymorphisms at specific amino acid residues of the L- and M-opsin genes (OPN1LW and OPN1MW) known to affect spectral tuning of the photoreceptors could influence spatio-chromatic contrast sensitivity. Chromatic contrast sensitivity functions were measured in 50 healthy individuals (20–71years) employing a novel pseudo-isochromatic grating stimulus. The spatio-chromatic contrast sensitivity functions were found to be low pass for all subjects, independent of age and color vision. The results revealed a senescent decline in spatio-chromatic contrast sensitivity. There were considerable between-individual differences in sensitivity within each age decade for individuals 49years old or younger, and age did not predict sensitivity for these age decades alone. Forty-six subjects (including a color deficient male and eight female carriers) were genotyped for L- and M-opsin genes. The Ser180Ala polymorphisms on the L-opsin gene were found to influence the subject’s color discrimination and their sensitivity to spatio-chromatic patterns. The results expose the significant role of neural and genetic factors in the deterioration of visual function with increasing age.

Color image quality assessment algorithm based on color structural similarity

Concerning the disadvantages of quality assessment algorithms for color images,a new algorithm based on visual structural similarity was proposed.Firstly,testing images were transformed into a selected uniform color space LAB2000HL.Secondly,one luminance Contrast Sensitivity Function(CSF) and two chromatic CSFs were used to filter images respectively.Thirdly,three structural similarity indexes were computed by multi-scale structural similarity index measurement(M-SSIM).Lastly,the proposed algorithm was constructed by weighting the three structural similarity indexes,which depended on different visual sensitivities of luminance and chromaticity.In the experiment,testing results on TID2008 database were compared with the results of visual assessment by Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient and Kendall rank-order correlation coefficient.The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more consistent with visual assessment and outperforms several other popular image quality assessment algorithms.

Comparison of Blue-Yellow Opponent Color Contrast Sensitivity Function between Female Badminton Players and Non-athletes

To compare the chromatic contrast sensitivity function (CSF) for the blue-yellow opponent channel (BYOC) between female badminton players and non-athlete controls. We recruited 40 young females (18-25 years old) who played badminton for at least 5 consecutive years as the test group, and 30 age-matched female controls who had no history of regular physical activity. The Pattern Generator™ system was used to test the CSF for the BYOC which was performed at three spatial frequencies (SFs) of 2 cycles per degree (cpd), 5 cpd, and 25 cpd. Comparison of BYOC thresholds showed significantly better results in the test group for all three SFs (P<0.001). Band pass shift (better CSF in the middle SF) was seen in the test group. The control group had low pass (better CSF in the low SF). Ocular motility (heterophoria, fusional convergence and divergence at far and near distances, and near point of convergence) was better in the test group, but the inter-group difference was not significant. The BYOC threshold results for badminton players indicated a better visual performance which may be a result of enhanced performance of the parallel processing of the parvocellular and magnocellular systems. This may be inherent and/or acquired in badminton players. In addition, badminton players appear to have developed sensory-motor programmed activities. Testing the CSF for BYOC may be useful for athlete selection in different levels and/or used as a criterion for screening players in the field of badminton.

Visual function of a patient with advanced adrenoleukodystrophy: Comparison of luminance and color contrast sensitivities

We assessed achromatic luminance and isoluminant chromatic contrast sensitivity functions of a 20-year-old male. He showed severe motor and intellectual disabilities after advanced adrenoleukodystrophy, which started at the age of 7. Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) to drifting gratings was used to assess his contrast sensitivities. Although the achromatic luminance contrast sensitivities were lower over the entire range of spatial frequencies tested than those of the healthy adults, they were preserved to the level comparable to healthy 7-year-old children, except for the frequency of 1 and 4 cycles/degree. In contrast, both of the red–green and blue chromatic contrast sensitivities were remarkably lower in all frequency range compare to healthy children and adults. These results indicate that it is possible for even an advanced case of ALD to show residual visual capacity that was preserved to a remarkable extent.

Neural adjustments to chromatic blur

The perception of blur in images can be strongly affected by prior adaptation to blurry images or by spatial induction from blurred surrounds. These contextual effects may play a role in calibrating visual responses for the spatial structure of luminance variations in images. We asked whether similar adjustments might also calibrate the visual system for spatial variations in color. Observers adjusted the amplitude spectra of luminance or chromatic images until they appeared correctly focused, and repeated these measurements either before or after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images or in the presence of blurred or sharpened surrounds. Prior adaptation induced large and distinct changes in perceived focus for both luminance and chromatic patterns, suggesting that luminance and chromatic mechanisms are both able to adjust to changes in the level of blur. However, judgments of focus were more variable for color, and unlike luminance there was little effect of surrounding spatial context on perceived blur. In additional measurements we explored the effects of adaptation on threshold contrast sensitivity for luminance and color. Adaptation to filtered noise with a 1/f spectrum characteristic of natural images strongly and selectively elevated thresholds at low spatial frequencies for both luminance and color, thus transforming the chromatic contrast sensitivity function from lowpass to nearly bandpass. These threshold changes were found to reflect interactions between different spatial scales that bias sensitivity against the lowest spatial grain in the image, and may reflect adaptation to different stimulus attributes than the attributes underlying judgments of image focus. Our results suggest that spatial sensitivity for variations in color can be strongly shaped by adaptation to the spatial structure of the stimulus, but point to dissociations in these visual adjustments both between luminance and color and different measures of spatial sensitivity.

Senescence of spatial chromatic contrast sensitivity II Matching under natural viewing conditions

Age-related changes in the spatial chromatic contrast sensitivity function of detection, measured along S and L - M cone axes, were demonstrated in a companion paper [Hardy et al., J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 22, 49 (2005)]. Here senescent changes in chromatic contrast appearance were assessed by contrast-matching functions (CMFs). Luminance and chromatic CMFs (S and L - M axes) were compared for younger (age 18-31 yr) and older (age 65-75 yr) trichromatic subjects by using stimuli that were perceptually anchored to the same physical standard contrasts. Subjects matched the contrast of test gratings of various spatial frequencies (0.5-8 cycles per degree) to the standard stimuli under natural viewing conditions. Because of changes in the visual system with age, the standard stimuli were closer to threshold for older subjects; however, in general, the shapes of the CMFs were similar for both groups. The results suggest that the perception of relative contrasts across spatial frequencies is stable with age.

Chromatic-Spatial Vision of the Aging Eye.

The human visual system undergoes continuous anatomical, physiological and functional changes throughout the life span. There is also continuous change in the spectral distribution and intensity of light reaching the retina from infancy through senescence, primarily due to changes in the absorption of short-wave light by the lens. Despite these changes in the retinal stimulus and the signals leaving the retina for perceptual analysis, color appearance is relatively stable during aging as measured by broadband reflective or self-luminous samples, the wavelengths of unique blue and yellow, and the achromatic locus. Measures of ocular media density for younger and older observers show, indeed, that color appearance is independent of ocular media density. This may be explained by a renormalization process that was demonstrated by measuring the chromaticity of the achromatic point before and after cataract surgery. There was a shift following cataract surgery (removal of a brunescent lens) that was initially toward yellow in color space, but over the course of months, drifted back in the direction of the achromatic point before surgery. The spatial characteristics of color mechanisms were quantified for younger and older observers in terms of chromatic perceptive fields and the chromatic contrast sensitivity functions. Younger and older observers differed with small spots or with chromatic spatial gratings near threshold, but there were no significant differences with larger spots or suprathreshold spatial gratings.

Spatial-frequency tuning of sustained nonoriented units of the red-green channel.

The existence of nonoriented cells but not of sustained orthogonal masking for achromatic stimuli led to an investigation of the spatial-frequency (SF) tuning of sustained nonoriented color units. For this purpose the Red-Green channel was isolated by the minimum flicker and hue cancellation techniques. Chromatic contrast sensitivity functions (CSF's), threshold elevation (TE) curves, and contrast nonlinearities (TE-versus-mask-contrast curves) were measured with spatially localized vertical color tests and sinusoidal orthogonal color masks by the method of constant stimuli under Gaussian temporal presentation. Results show that (1) color CSF's are a low-pass function of SF, whereas TE curves are a bandpass function of mask SF, and (2) a minimum of six SF-tuned color mechanisms (one low pass and five bandpass functions of SF, with peak SF's of 0.13, 0.5, 2, 4, and 8 cycles per degree and bandwidths of 3.9, 4.4, 2.9, 2.1, 1.1, and 1.2 octaves), similar to oblique-masking color mechanisms, are extracted by the multiple-mechanisms model. These data imply that (1) most of the SF tuning of the broadly oriented color units is already present in the circularly symmetric units, and (2) the latter may be an input to the former.

Visual evoked potentials in three-dimensional color space: Correlates of spatio-chromatic processing

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were measured for sinusoidal gratings with spatio-chromatic modulation defined in a three-dimensional color space. The spatio-chromatic modulation of the gratings can be decomposed into contributions from an achromatic luminance varying component, an isoluminant component which modulates only the activities of L cones and M cones, and an isoluminant component corresponding to modulation of only S-cone activity. The emphasis of this report is the nature of VEPs resulting from isoluminant spatio-chromatic modulation. The VEP response was characterized along a number of spatial, temporal, and chromatic stimulus dimensions: contrast, spatial frequency, chromaticity in the isoluminant plane, chrominance/luminance ratio, orientation, and temporal frequency. Isoluminant VEPs resulting from stimuli modulating L and M cones are compared with those from S-cone modulation. When appropriate spatiotemporal conditions are employed, both types produce robust VEPs; however, the S-pathway VEPs show considerably longer latencies than do those from LM-pathway activation. The VEP results are compared to psychophysical and single unit electrophysiological observations. VEP latencies exhibit the lowpass character of psychophysical chromatic contrast sensitivity functions but VEP amplitudes show bandpass tuning along both the S and LM axes. An oblique effect, i.e. shorter latencies for horizontal and vertical gratings than for diagonal, is observed in the isoluminant VEP. S-pathway VEPs are used to demonstrate an electophysiological correlate of transient tritanopia. Normative amplitude and latency data for VEPs from selectivity stimulated chromatic mechanisms provide a baseline for clinical electrodiagnostic applications.
