Ka-Band Rotational Spectroscopy of Succinimide and N-Chlorosuccinimide.

Succinimide and its derivatives are cyclic five-membered rings that appear in a variety of natural products and are widely used in organic synthesis. From a structural standpoint, succinimide contains an NH group in the ring which interacts with two adjacent carbonyl groups, pushing the ring structure toward planarity at the expense of increasing ring strain and eclipsing interactions among the out-of-plane hydrogen atoms in the two CH2 groups. Previous quantum chemical calculations at different levels of theory have predicted both a nonplanar C2 structure and a planar C2v structure, the latter of which is the most consistent with gas-phase electron diffraction measurements. Here, we report the pure rotational spectra of succinimide and N-chlorosuccinimide in the 26.5-40.0 GHz range using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, supported by coupled cluster and density functional theory quantum chemical calculations. The spectra were fit to Watson's A-reduced effective Hamiltonian, including both 35Cl and 37Cl isotopologues of N-chlorosuccinimide as well as the N and Cl quadrupole hyperfine interactions. On the basis of the agreement with quantum chemical calculations and the measured inertial defects, we find that the rotational spectra are consistent with a planar ring structure, with a maximum out-of-plane angle of ≤5°.

Insights into the gas-phase structure and internal dynamics of diphenylsilane: A broadband rotational spectroscopy study.

The rotational spectrum of diphenylsilane was investigated using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the frequency range of 2-8 GHz. The lowest energy structure of diphenylsilane has C2 point group symmetry with the C2 symmetry axis coinciding with the binertial axis of the molecule. Through the assignment of the main isotopologue as well as singly substituted heavy-atom isotopologues, including 13C, 29Si, and 30Si, we were able to obtain a comprehensive gas-phase structure of diphenylsilane. The structure of diphenylsilane was compared with its oxygen analogue, diphenylether, including a discussion of the barrier height to the large-amplitude motion of the phenyl rings. Furthermore, the structural comparison was extended to include a range of C-Si bond lengths and bond angles from other organosilicon molecules where the silicon atom is bonded to aliphatic and/or aromatic moieties.

Broadband Rotational Spectroscopy in Uniform Supersonic Flows: Chirped Pulse/Uniform Flow for Reaction Dynamics and Low Temperature Kinetics.

ConspectusThe study of gas-phase chemical reactions at very low temperatures first became possible with the development and implementation of the CRESU (French acronym for Reaction Kinetics in Uniform Supersonic Flows) technique. CRESU relies on a uniform supersonic flow produced by expansion of a gas through a Laval (convergent-divergent) nozzle to produce a wall-less reactor at temperatures from 10 to 200 K and densities of 1016-1018 cm-3 for the study of low temperature kinetics, with particular application to astrochemistry. In recent years, we have combined uniform flows with revolutionary advances in broadband rotational spectroscopy to yield an instrument that affords near-universal detection for novel applications in photodissociation, reaction dynamics, and kinetics. This combination of uniform supersonic flows with chirped-pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy (Chirped-Pulse/Uniform Flow, CPUF) permits detection of any species with a modest dipole moment, thermalized to the uniform temperature of the gas flow, with isomer, conformer, and vibrational state specificity. In addition, the use of broadband, high-resolution, and time-dependent (microsecond time scale) micro- and mm-wave spectroscopy makes it an ideal tool for characterizing both transient and stable molecules, as well as studying their spectroscopy and dynamics.In this Account, we review recent advances made using the CPUF technique, including studies of photodissociation, radical-radical reaction dynamics, and low temperature kinetics. These studies highlight both the strength of universal and multiplexed detection and the challenges of coupling it to a high-density collisional environment. Product branching and product evolution as a function of time have been measured for astrochemically relevant systems, relying on the detailed characterization of these flow conditions via experiments and fluid dynamics simulations. In the photodissociation of isoxazole, an unusual heterocyclic molecule with a very low-energy conical intersection, we have identified 7 products in 5 reaction channels and determined the product branching, pointing to both direct and indirect pathways. We have also approached the same system from separated NO and C3H3 reactants to explore a broader range of the potential energy surface, demonstrating the power of multichannel branching measurements for complex radical-radical reactions. We determined the product branching in the C3H2 isomers in the photodissociation of the propargyl radical and identified the importance of a hydrogen atom catalyzed isomerization to the lowest energy cyclic form. This then motivated a study of direct D-H exchange reaction in radicals, in which we demonstrate that it is an important and overlooked pathway for deuterium fractionation in astrochemical environments. Recently, we have shown the measurement of low temperature kinetics inside an extended Laval nozzle, after which a shock-free secondary expansion to low temperature and density affords an ideal environment for detection by rotational spectroscopy. These results highlight the power and potential of the CPUF approach, and future prospects will also be discussed in light of these developments.

Modulating Electrostatic Properties and Noncovalent Interactions via Structural Isomerism: The Microwave Spectra and Molecular Structures of (E)- and (Z)-1,2,3,3,3-Pentafluoropropene and Their Gas-Phase Heterodimers with the Argon Atom.

Microwave spectra of both the E and Z isomers of 1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene along with all three of the singly substituted 13C isotopologues for each are obtained using broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy from 2.0-18.1 GHz. Associated quantum chemistry calculations show that the barrier to internal rotation of the CF3 group is significantly higher for the Z isomer, which is stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond, although the barriers in both isomers are sufficiently high to prevent the observation of any effects due to internal rotation. The normal isotopologues of the argon heterodimers for both isomers are also observed in the broadband spectrum and a Balle-Flygare cavity Fourier transform microwave spectrometer is used to obtain the 5.0-20.6 GHz spectra of the corresponding 13C isotopologues. In each case, the argon atom locates so as to maximize its interactions with areas of significant electron density. However, mapped electrostatic potential surfaces indicate that the areas of greatest nucleophilicity are different for the two isomers, suggesting that they may interact differently in forming heterodimers with protic acids.

Rotational spectra of ten new fluoroethylene/CO2 clusters, (C2H3F)x(CO2)y: Application of data-centered methods to the assignment of spectra in complex mixtures

Chirped-pulse Fourier-transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy has been used to measure the spectra of ten previously unobserved fluoroethylene (FE)/CO2 clusters, (FE)x(CO2)y, with x from 1 to 4 and y from 0 to 4. Multiple spectra were recorded with varying concentrations of CO2 in the sample, and at least 400,000 free induction decays averaged per data set. This allowed implementation of data-centered approaches, using intensity variation, to identify subsets of transitions belonging to the same cluster species or those of similar composition, simplifying the assignment process for the complex mixture of clusters present. All spectra were fitted to Watson A-reduction Hamiltonians, including quartic distortion constants, with very few species requiring higher order distortion constants for satisfactory fits to be obtained. Computational data at MP2/6-311++G(2d,2p) and ωB97X-D/6-31+G(d,p) levels suggested FE:CO2 ratios and likely structural arrangements of each cluster based on comparisons with experimental rotational constants.

Rotational spectrum, structure, and quadrupole coupling of cyclopropylchloromethyldifluorosilane.

Cyclopropylchloromethyldifluorosilane, c-C3H5SiF2CH2Cl, has been synthesized, and its rotational spectrum has been recorded by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The spectral analysis of several isotopologues indicates the presence of two distinct conformations in the free-jet expansion, which are interconvertible through a rotation of the chloromethyl group. A partial substitution structure is presented for the lower energy conformation and is compared to the equilibrium structure obtained from quantum chemical calculations. Additionally, the presence of the chlorine nucleus leads to the rotational transitions splitting into multiple hyperfine components and χaa, a measure of the electric field gradient along the a axis, is unusually small at merely +0.1393(73) MHz. Various common abinitio and density functional theory methods fail to predict good quadrupole coupling constants (in the principal axis system) that adequately reproduce the observed hyperfine splitting, although diagonalizing the quadrupole coupling tensor from the principal axis system into a nucleus-centered axis system reveals that, overall, these methods calculate reasonably the electric field gradient about the chlorine nucleus. Finally, a total of nine electric dipole forbidden, quadrupole allowed transitions are observed in the rotational spectra of the parent species of the higher energy conformation and the 37Cl isotopologue of the lower energy conformation. These include those of x-type (no change in parity of Ka or Kc), which, to our knowledge, is the first time such transitions have been observed in a chlorine-containing molecule.

Molecular Structure of Salicylic Acid and Its Hydrates: A Rotational Spectroscopy Study.

We present a study of salicylic acid and its hydrates, with up to four water molecules, done by employing chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. We employed the spectral data set of the parent, 13C, and 2H isotopologues to determine the molecular structure and characterize the intra- and intermolecular interactions of salicylic acid and its monohydrate. Complementary theoretical calculations were done to support the analysis of the experimental results. For the monomer, we analyzed structural properties, such as the angular-group-induced bond alternation (AGIBA) effect. In the microsolvates, we analyzed their main structural features dominated by the interaction of water with the carboxylic acid group. This work contributes to seeding information on how water molecules accumulate around this group. Moreover, we discussed the role of cooperative effects further stabilizing the observed inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bond interactions.

Rotational Spectroscopy and Conformational Flexibility of 2-Phenylethanethiol: The Dominant S-H⋅⋅⋅π Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond.

We present a rotational-computational investigation of the aromatic mercaptan 2-phenylethanethiol, addressing its potential energy surface, conformational equilibrium, internal dynamics and intramolecular interactions. The experiment used broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion, recording the rotational spectrum in the 2-8 GHz frequency region. Two different conformers were detected in the spectrum. The most intense transitions correspond to a skew (gauche-gauche) conformation, identified as the global minimum. The spectra of ten different isotopologues were assigned for this species, leading to accurate effective and substitution structures. The weaker spectrum presents small tunnelling doublings caused by the torsional motion of the thiol group, which are only compatible with an antiperiplanar skeleton and a gauche thiol. The larger stability of the global minimum is attributed to an intramolecular S-H⋅⋅⋅π weak hydrogen bond. A comparison of the intramolecular interactions in the title molecule and 2-phenylethanol, similarly stabilized by a O-H⋅⋅⋅π hydrogen bond, shows the different strength of these interactions. Density functional (B3LYP-D3, B2PLYP-D3) and ab initio (MP2) calculations were conducted for the molecule.

Probing the structure and dynamics of the heterocyclic PAH xanthene and its water complexes with infrared and microwave spectroscopy.

To assess the presence of oxygen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) in the interstellar medium and understand how water aggregates on an OPAH surface, we present a comprehensive gas-phase spectroscopy investigation of the OPAH xanthene (C13H10O) and its complexes with water using IR-UV ion dip spectroscopy and chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The infrared spectrum of xanthene shows weak features at 3.42, 3.43, and 3.47 μm, which have been suggested to partly originate from vibrational modes of PAHs containing sp3 hybridized carbon atoms, in agreement with the molecular structure of xanthene. The high resolution of rotational spectroscopy reveals a tunneling splitting of the rotational transitions, which can be explained with an out-of-plane bending motion of the two lateral benzene rings of xanthene. The nature of the tunnelling motion is elucidated by observing a similar splitting pattern in the rotational transitions of the singly-substituted 13C isotopologues. The rotational spectroscopy investigation is extended to hydrates of xanthene with up to four water molecules. Different xanthene-water binding motifs are observed based on the degree of hydration, with O-H⋯π interactions becoming preferred over O-H⋯Oxanthene interactions as the degree of hydration increases. A structural comparison with water complexes of related molecular systems highlights the impact of the substrate's shape and chemical composition on the arrangement of the surrounding water molecules.

Binary conformers of a flexible, long-chain fluoroalcohol: dispersion controlled selectivity and relative abundances in a jet.

The complex conformational panorama of binary 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-butanol (TFB) aggregates was investigated using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, aided by conformational searches using CREST (Conformer-Rotamer Ensemble Sampling Tool) and quantum chemistry calculations. From nearly 1500 initial dimer geometries, 16 most stable binary candidates were obtained within a relative energy window of ∼4 kJ mol-1. Rotational spectra of five binary conformers were experimentally observed in supersonic expansion and assigned. Interestingly, three out of the five observed binary conformers are composed solely of monomer conformers, which were not observed in their isolated gas phase forms in jet expansion. In addition, an observed dimer that is made exclusively of the most stable TFB monomer subunits does not correspond to the global minimum. The intricate kinetically and thermodynamically controlled dimer formation mechanisms are discussed, and a modified kinetic-thermodynamic model was developed, providing conformational abundances that are in good agreement with the experiment. Subsequent non-covalent interaction analyses reveal that the observed conformers are held together by one primary O-H⋯O hydrogen bond and secondary intermolecular C-H⋯O, C-H⋯F, and/or O-H⋯F interactions, as well as C-H⋯H-C London dispersion interactions between the methylene groups. Further symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analyses of the TFB dimer conformers and related alcohol dimers reveal a considerable rise in dispersion contributions with increasing n-alkyl carbon chain length and highlight the role of dispersion interactions in preferentially stabilizing the global minimum of the TFB dimer.

Conformations of borneol and isoborneol in the gas phase: Their monomers and microsolvation clusters.

Borneol is a natural monoterpene with significant applications in various industries, including medicine and perfumery. It presents several diastereomers with different physical and chemical properties, influenced by their unique structures and interactions with molecular receptors. However, a complete description of its inherent structure and solvent interactions remains elusive. Here, we report a detailed investigation of the gas-phase experimental structures of borneol and isoborneol, along with the description of their microsolvation complexes with the common solvents water and dimethyl sulfoxide. The molecules and complexes were studied using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy coupled to a supersonic expansion source. Although three rotamers are potentially populated under the conditions of the supersonic expansion, only one of them was observed for each monomer. The examination of the monohydrated complexes revealed structures stabilized by hydrogen bonds and non-covalent C-H⋯O interactions, with water as the hydrogen bond donor. Interestingly, in the clusters with dimethyl sulfoxide, borneol and isoborneol change their roles acting as donors. We further identified a higher-energy rotamer of the borneol monomer in one of the complexes with dimethyl sulfoxide, while that rotamer was missing in the experiment for the monomer. This observation is not common and highlights a specific position in borneol especially favorable for forming stable complexes, which could have implications in the understanding of the unique physical and chemical properties of the diastereomers.

Quantum Tunneling Facilitates Water Motion across the Surface of Phenanthrene.

Quantum tunneling is a fundamental phenomenon that plays a pivotal role in the motion and interaction of atoms and molecules. In particular, its influence in the interaction between water molecules and carbon surfaces can have significant implications for a multitude of fields ranging from atmospheric chemistry to separation technologies. Here, we unveil at the molecular level the complex motion dynamics of a single water molecule on the planar surface of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene, which was used as a small-scale carbon surface-like model. In this system, the water molecule interacts with the substrate through weak O-H···π hydrogen bonds, in which phenanthrene acts as the hydrogen-bond acceptor via the high electron density of its aromatic cloud. The rotational spectrum, which was recorded using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, exhibits characteristic line splittings as dynamical features. The nature of the internal dynamics was elucidated in great detail with the investigation of the isotope-substitution effect on the line splittings in the rotational spectra of the H218O, D2O, and HDO isotopologues of the phenanthrene-H2O complex. The spectral analysis revealed a complex internal dynamic showing a concerted tunneling motion of water involving its internal rotation and its translation between the two equivalent peripheral rings of phenanthrene. This high-resolution spectroscopy study presents the observation of a tunneling motion exhibited by the water monomer when interacting with a planar carbon surface with an unprecedented level of detail. This can serve as a small-scale analogue for water motions on large aromatic surfaces, i.e., large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and graphene.

Conformational analysis of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide by rotational spectroscopy

Cyclohexyl hydroperoxide was observed in the gas phase using a supersonic expansion coupled with broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Cyclohexyl hydroperoxide is a simple but important organic peroxide due to its rather high stability in solution and because of its applications in polymer industry. Furthermore, it is one of the products of the oxidation process of cyclohexane. We detected this molecule in the spectrum of a complex non-commercial sample containing many molecular species from the oxidation of cyclohexane. The peroxy group O-O-H gives flexibility to the molecule and results in different stable conformations. Each of the conformations presents two equivalent forms due to the high symmetry of cyclohexane. From the dataset of rotational constants observed, we determined a partial effective structure for cyclohexyl hydroperoxide and compared it with other peroxides studied in the gas phase.

Chirped pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy of alcohol and water tetramers.

In an effort to build towards quantitative models of alcohol:water microaggregation in liquid mixtures, the present works characterizes the energy landscape and structures of pure ethanol and mixed ethanol:water tetramers using Chirped Pulse Fourier-transform Microwave spectroscopy. Many conformers of each type of tetramer are available, and those with sufficiently strong dipole moments are experimentally examined. This analysis considers, but does not explicitly fit, the splitting of rotational states due to internal rotation of the methyl groups present, as well as utilizes isotopic substitution experiments to verify the conformer variations observed. Implications of the listed results include a suggestion of the stability of micro-aggregated structures as opposed to homogeneously mixed clusters, informing future work on characterization of larger clusters and any potential modeling of the hydrogen bond network at play.

The eight structures of caffeic acid: a jet-cooled laser ablated rotational study.

This work reports a complete conformational analysis of caffeic acid, an exceptionally versatile pharmacophore, using laser ablation chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The whole conformational space consisting of eight distinct species has been fully deciphered based on the trend of the rotational constants supported by theoretical computations. We show how rotational spectroscopy can be confidently used to distinguish between conformers even when the structural differences are minimal, such as those involved in the conformational panorama of caffeic acid. Additionally, the structural information here provided, such as the planarity observed in all the conformers, could help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the biological and pharmacological activity of hydroxycinnamic acids.

Supersonic jet chirped pulse microwave spectroscopy of ring-like methanol : water pentamers.

The potential energy surfaces of pure methanol and mixed methanol-water pentamers have been explored using chirped pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy aided by ab initio calculations. Rotational constants, anharmonic corrections, dipole moments, and relative energies were calculated for different conformers. Predicted rotational transitions were then fit to experimental spectra from 10-18 GHz and the assignments were confirmed using double resonance experiments where feasible. The results show all 23 of the lowest energy conformers are bound in a planar ring of hydrogen bonding that display a steady decrease in the RO-O distance along this ring as methanol content is increased. Interspersed methanol and water conformers have comparable relative abundances to those with micro-aggregation, but structures with micro-aggregated methanol and water have a higher rigid rotor fitting error. The computational methods' high degree of accuracy when compared to our experimental results suggests the strong donor-acceptor hydrogen bonding in these clusters leads to well-defined minima on the intermolecular potential energy surface.

The microwave spectrum of the C2H2…AgI complex assigned and analysed using PGOPHER

Rotational spectra of four isotopologues of C2H2…AgI have been recorded between 6.5 and 18.5 GHz by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The complex is generated through laser ablation of a silver target in the presence of a gas sample containing low concentrations of C2H2 and CF3I in argon undergoing supersonic expansion. Rotational constants, A0,B0 and C0, centrifugal distortion constants, ΔJ and ΔJK, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, χaa(I) and χbb(I) − χcc(I) have been determined through spectroscopic assignment and fitting in Western’s PGOPHER program. The experimental results are reported alongside those of ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)(F12*)/AVTZ level. The complex is shown to adopt a C2v, T-shaped geometry and structural parameters are evaluated. The r0 parameters that respectively represent the bond distance separating the two carbon atoms of C2H2, denoted as r(CC), and the CCH angle, denoted as ∠(*−C−H), are determined to be 1.2228(40) Å and 187.4(6)◦, respectively. This implies that the geometry of the C2H2 sub-unit of the complex is distorted from the geometry of the isolated C2H2 molecule. The CC bond lengthens by 0.0162(41) Å and C2H2 bends away from linearity by 7.4(6)° on formation of the complex between C2H2 and AgI where r0 parameters are used for the comparison. Trends in the force constants of bonds, and in the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant of the iodine nucleus, χaa(I), for B…AgI complexes are examined where B is varied across the series (B = Ar, H3N, H2O, H2S, C2H2, H3P and CO).

Conformational Panorama of Cycloundecanone: A Rotational Spectroscopy Study.

The conformational landscape of the medium-size cyclic ketone cycloundecanone has been investigated using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and computational calculations. Nine conformations were observed in the rotational spectrum and identified from the comparison of experimental and theoretical rotational constants as well as the observed and predicted types of rotational transitions. All singly substituted 13C isotopologues were observed for the most abundant conformer, which allowed the determination of partial substitution and effective structures. The most abundant conformer dominates the rotational spectrum and is almost 40 times more abundant than the least abundant conformer. Conformational preferences are governed by the combination of transannular H···H and eclipsed HCCH interactions.

The First Stages of Nanomicelle Formation Captured in the Sevoflurane Trimer.

Self-aggregation of sevoflurane, an inhalable, fluorinated anesthetic, provides a challenge for current state-of-the-art high-resolution techniques due to its large mass and the variety of possible hydrogen bonds between monomers. Here we present the observation of sevoflurane trimer by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, identified through the interplay of experimental and computational methods. The trimer (>600 Da), one of the largest molecular aggregates observed through rotational spectroscopy, does not resemble the binding (C–H···O) motif of the already characterized sevoflurane dimer, instead adapting a new binding configuration created predominantly from 17 CH···F hydrogen bonds that resembles a nanomicellar arrangement. The observation of such a heavy aggregate highlights the potential of rotational spectroscopy to study larger biochemical systems in the limit of spectroscopic congestion but also showcases the challenges ahead as the mass of the system increases.

Internal dynamics of methyl p-tolyl sulfoxide in the gas phase: Rotational spectroscopy and theoretical studies.

A pure rotational spectrum of methyl p-tolyl sulfoxide (MTSO) was studied using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the frequency range of 18-26GHz. A single conformer was unambiguously observed in the supersonic jet expansion, which is consistent with the conformational analysis performed using quantum-chemical calculations. Rotational transitions were split into two components of A and E symmetries due to the low-barrier internal rotation of the ring methyl group [V3 = 11.0178(23) cm-1]. The low energy barrier for the methyl top internal rotation implies an electron-withdrawing effect of the group at the opposite side of the phenyl ring, in comparison with other para-substituted toluenes. The effective ground state (r0) geometry was derived using the rotational constants from the parent species and the 34S and eight 13C singly substituted isotopologues. Compared to two other sulfoxides, methyl phenyl sulfoxide and methyl 4-nitrophenyl sulfoxide, the sulfoxide group in MTSO is slightly more twisted with respect to the plane of the phenyl ring, which could be attributed to the moderate electron-donating effect of the p-methyl group. Furthermore, the pyramidal inversion that interconverts the handedness at the sulfur stereogenic center was explored in the electronic ground (S0) and excited (S1) states with nudged elastic band and time-dependent density functional theory methods. It was found that the pyramidal inversion in S1 is easier than in S0, showing that optical excitation to S1 will facilitate an effectively barrier-free inversion.
