Connection between topological pumping effect and chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals

While the semiclassical Boltzmann approach has been widely adopted to study chiral-anomaly-related transport in Weyl semimetals (WSMs), it predicts an unphysical diverging electrical conductivity when ${E}_{F}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, where ${E}_{F}$ is the Fermi energy. Here, we develop a modified semiclassical equation of motion which includes both the diagonal and off-diagonal contributions of the Berry curvature. On this basis, we derive an undivergent classical formula for the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity in a WSM which resolves the conflict between the classical and ultraquantum approaches. We demonstrate that the chiral anomaly is closely related to the topological pumping effect and it can be realized even in the absence of a magnetic field. With our findings we propose a different perspective to understand the topological properties of WSMs and suggest a way to measure the chiral anomaly using transport.

Longitudinal magnetoconductance and the planar Hall effect in a lattice model of tilted Weyl fermions

The experimental verification of chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals is an active area of investigation in modern condensed matter physics, which typically relies on the combined signatures of longitudinal magnetoconductance (LMC) along with the planar Hall effect (PHE). It has recently been shown that for weak nonquantizing magnetic fields, a sufficiently strong finite intervalley scattering drives the system to switch the sign of LMC from positive to negative. Here we unravel another independent source that produces the same effect. Specifically, a smooth lattice cutoff to the linear dispersion, which is ubiquitous in real Weyl materials, introduces nonlinearity in the problem and also drives the system to exhibit negative LMC for noncollinear electric and magnetic fields even in the limit of vanishing intervalley scattering. We examine longitudinal magnetoconductivity and the planar Hall effect semianalytically for a lattice model of tilted Weyl fermions within the Boltzmann approximation. We independently study the effects of a finite lattice cutoff and tilt parameters and construct phase diagrams in relevant parameter spaces that are relevant for diagnosing chiral anomaly in real Weyl materials.

Sign of longitudinal magnetoconductivity and the planar Hall effect in Weyl semimetals

The manifestation of chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals typically relies on the observation of longitudinal magnetoconductance (LMC) along with the planar Hall effect, with a specific magnetic field and angle dependence. Here we solve the Boltzmann equation in the semiclassical regime for a prototype of a Weyl semimetal, allowing for both intravalley and intervalley scattering, along with including effects from the orbital magnetic moment (OMM), in a geometry where the electric and magnetic fields are not necessarily parallel to each other. We construct the phase diagram in the relevant parameter space that describes the shift from positive to negative LMC in the presence of OMM and sufficiently strong intervalley scattering, as has been recently pointed out for only parallel electric and magnetic fields. On the other hand, we find that the chiral anomaly contribution to the planar Hall effect always remains positive (unlike the LMC) irrespective of the inclusion or exclusion of OMM, or the strength of the intervalley scattering. Our predictions can be directly tested in experiments, and may be employed as new diagnostic procedures to verify chiral anomaly in Weyl systems.

Interaction and temperature effects on the magneto-optical conductivity of Weyl liquids

Negative magnetoresistance is one of the manifestations of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. The magneto-optical conductivity also shows transitions between Landau levels that are not spaced as in an ordinary electron gas. How are such topological properties modified by interactions and temperature? We answer this question by studying a lattice model of Weyl semimetals with an on-site Hubbard interaction. Such an interacting Weyl semimetal, dubbed as Weyl liquid, may be realized in Mn$_3$Sn. We solve that model with single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We find that in a Weyl liquid, quasiparticles can be characterized by a quasiparticle spectral weight $Z$, although their lifetime increases much more rapidly as frequency approaches zero than in an ordinary Fermi liquid. The negative magnetoresistance still exists, even though the slope of the linear dependence of the DC conductivity with respect to the magnetic filed is decreased by the interaction. At elevated temperatures, a Weyl liquid crossesover to bad metallic behavior where the Drude peak becomes flat and featureless.

Electrically tunable Kondo effect as a direct measurement of the chiral anomaly in disordered Weyl semimetals

We propose a mechanism to directly measure the chiral anomaly in disorder Weyl semimetals (WSMs) by the Kondo effect. We find that in a magnetic and electric field driven WSM, the locations of the Kondo peaks can be modulated by the chiral chemical potential, which is proportional to $\mathbf{E}\cdot \mathbf{B}$. The Kondo peaks come from spin fluctuations within the impurities, which apart from the temperature, relate closely to the host's Fermi level. In WSMs, the chiral-anomaly-induced chirality population imbalance will shift the local Fermi levels of the paired Weyl valleys toward opposite directions in energy, and then affects the Kondo effect. Consequently, the Kondo effect can be tunable by an external electric field via the chiral chemical potential. This is unique to the chiral anomaly. Base on this, we argue that the electrically tunable Kondo effect can serve as a direct measurement of the chiral anomaly in WSMs. The Kondo peaks are robust against the disorder effect and therefore, the signal of the chiral anomaly survives for a relatively weak magnetic field.

Optical signatures of the chiral anomaly in mirror-symmetric Weyl semimetals

The chiral anomaly is a phenomenon characteristic of Weyl fermions, which has condensed matter realizations in Weyl semimetals. Efforts to observe smoking gun signatures of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals have mostly focused on a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in electronic transport. Unfortunately, disentangling the chiral anomaly contribution in transport or optical measurements has proven non-trivial. Recent works have proposed an alternative approach of probing pseudoscalar phonon dynamics for signatures of the chiral anomaly in non-mirror-symmetric crystals. Here, we show that such phonon signatures can be extended to scalar phonon modes and mirror-symmetric crystals, broadening the pool of candidate materials. We show that the presence of the background magnetic field can break mirror symmetry strongly enough to yield observable signatures of the chiral anomaly even in mirror-symmetric materials. Specifically for mirror-symmetric Weyl semimetals such as TaAs and NbAs, including the Zeeman interaction at $B \approx 10$T, we predict an IR reflectivity peak will develop with an $\mathbf{E}_\text{IR}\cdot\mathbf{B}$ dependence.

Quantum oscillation modulated angular dependence of the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity and planar Hall effect in Weyl semimetals

We study the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC) and planar Hall effect as emergent effects of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, following a recent-developed theory by integrating the Landau quantization with Boltzmann equation. It is found that, in the weak magnetic field regime, the LMC and planar Hall conductivity (PHC) obey $\cos^{6}\theta$ and $\cos^{5}\theta\sin \theta$ dependences on the angle $\theta$ between the magnetic and electric fields. For higher magnetic fields, the LMC and PHC cross over to $\cos^{2}\theta$ and $\cos\theta\sin\theta$ dependences, respectively. Interestingly, the PHC could exhibit quantum oscillations with varying $\theta$, due to the periodic-in-$1/B$ oscillations of the chiral chemical potential. When the magnetic and electric fields are noncollinear, the LMC and PHC will deviate from the classical $B$-quadratic dependence, even in the weak magnetic field regime.

Spectroscopic studies of plasmons in topological materials

Plasmonics plays an important role in the development of nanophotonics, which allows breaking diffraction limit and controlling light in deep-subwavelength scale due to the strong interaction between light and free carriers. Noble metals and 2-dimensional electron gas have been the main platforms for studying plasmonics over the past decade. The metal-based plasmonic devices have exhibited great potential in various applications, including integrated photonic systems, biological sensing, super-resolution imaging and surface-enhanced Raman scattering, etc. Because of the high carrier density, plasmons of noble metals are realized in the near-infrared to visible frequency range. With the rapid development of new materials, many other plasmonic materials are discovered to exhibit new properties. One example is the graphene plasmons working in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral range, which exhibit strong field confinement and frequency tunability due to the massless Dirac fermions and other exotic electrical and optical properties. Recently, topological materials, the band structures of which are composed of cones with linear dispersion like in graphene, are discovered, such as the topological insulators, Dirac semimetals, Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals, providing another platform to study the Dirac plasmons. Such linear dispersion results in small electron mass and unique carrier density dependence of plasmons. In addition, topological materials possess a tremendous amount of exotic electron properties, such as the ultrahigh mobility, topological surface states and chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, etc. Many of these electronic properties can be inherited by the collective oscillation of free electrons, promising new possibility for plasmonics. Here, the experimental observations of plasmons in topological insulators and topological semimetals are reviewed, with special focus on the studies based on electron energy loss spectrum and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. At the end, other topological materials with potential for hosting 2D plasmons are discussed. This review provides an overview of plasmons in topological semimetals and may stimulate further quest of more exotic features for plasmons.

Magnetic states and Kondo screening in Weyl semimetals with chiral anomaly

We theoretically study the localized magnetic states and the Kondo screening of a magnetic impurity in the bulk of Weyl semimetals (SMs). The linear dispersion near the Weyl nodes and the anomalous broadening of the impurity level lead to a nonvanishing magnetic moment in a wide region of parameters. The magnetic susceptibility is significantly enhanced by increasing the chirality imbalance for the chemical potential fixed at the Weyl nodes. The Kondo effect takes place whenever the chemical potential is tuned away from the nodes. The low-temperature susceptibility is determined by both the Kondo screening and the broadening of the magnetic impurity level. In the presence of chiral anomaly, the Kondo screening displays opposite behaviors for the chemical potential situated below and above the Weyl nodes. The magnetic susceptibility can be tuned by the charge imbalance of the nodes, which provides a scheme to study the chiral anomaly in Weyl SMs.

Breakdown of the Chiral Anomaly in Weyl Semimetals in a Strong Magnetic Field.

The low-energy quasiparticles of Weyl semimetals are a condensed-matter realization of the Weyl fermions introduced in relativistic field theory. Chiral anomaly, the nonconservation of the chiral charge under parallel electric and magnetic fields, is arguably the most important phenomenon of Weyl semimetals and has been explained as an imbalance between the occupancies of the gapless, zeroth Landau levels with opposite chiralities. This widely accepted picture has served as the basis for subsequent studies. Here we report the breakdown of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals in a strong magnetic field based on abinitio calculations. A sizable energy gap that depends sensitively on the direction of the magnetic field may open up due to the mixing of the zeroth Landau levels associated with the opposite-chirality Weyl points that are away from each other in the Brillouin zone. Our study provides a theoretical framework for understanding a wide range of phenomena closely related to the chiral anomaly in topological semimetals, such as magnetotransport, thermoelectric responses, and plasmons, to name a few.

Signatures of the Chiral Anomaly in Phonon Dynamics.

Discovered in high-energy physics, the chiral anomaly has recently made way to materials science by virtue of Weyl semimetals (WSM). Thus far, the main efforts to probe the chiral anomaly in WSM have concentrated on electronic phenomena. Here, we show that the chiral anomaly can have a large impact in the A_{1} phonons of enantiomorphic WSM. In these materials, the chiral anomaly produces an unusual magnetic-field-induced resonance in the effective phonon charge, which in turn leads to anomalies in the phonon dispersion, optical reflectivity, and the Raman scattering.

Gigantic negative magnetoresistance in the bulk of a disordered topological insulator

With the recent discovery of Weyl semimetals, the phenomenon of negative magnetoresistance (MR) is attracting renewed interest. Large negative MR is usually related to magnetism, but the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals is a rare exception. Here we report a mechanism for large negative MR which is also unrelated to magnetism but is related to disorder. In the nearly bulk-insulating topological insulator TlBi0.15Sb0.85Te2, we observed gigantic negative MR reaching 98% in 14 T at 10 K, which is unprecedented in a nonmagnetic system. Supported by numerical simulations, we argue that this phenomenon is likely due to the Zeeman effect on a barely percolating current path formed in the disordered bulk. Since disorder can also lead to non-saturating linear MR in Ag2+δSe, the present finding suggests that disorder engineering in narrow-gap systems is useful for realizing gigantic MR in both positive and negative directions.

Electromagnetic Signatures of the Chiral Anomaly in Weyl Semimetals.

Weyl semimetals are predicted to realize the three-dimensional axial anomaly first discussed in particle physics. The anomaly leads to unusual transport phenomena such as the chiral magnetic effect in which an applied magnetic field induces a current parallel to the field. Here we investigate diagnostics of the axial anomaly based on the fundamental equations of axion electrodynamics. We find that materials with Weyl nodes of opposite chirality and finite energy separation immersed in a uniform magnetic field exhibit an anomaly-induced oscillatory magnetic field with a period set by the chemical potential difference of the nodes. In the case where a chemical potential imbalance is created by applying parallel electric and magnetic fields, we find a suppression of the magnetic-field component parallel to the electric field inside the material for rectangular samples, suggesting that the chiral magnetic current opposes this imbalance. For cylindrical geometries, we instead find an enhancement of this magnetic-field component along with an anomaly-induced azimuthal component. We propose experiments to detect such magnetic signatures of the axial anomaly.

Surface plasmon polaritons in topological Weyl semimetals

We consider theoretically surface plasmon polaritons in Weyl semimetals. These materials contain pairs of band touching points - Weyl nodes - with a chiral topological charge, which induces an optical anisotropy and anomalous transport through the chiral anomaly. We show that these effects, which are not present in ordinary metals, have a direct fundamental manifestation in the surface plasmon dispersion. The retarded Weyl surface plasmon dispersion depends on the separation of the Weyl nodes in energy and momentum space. For Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry, the distance between the nodes acts as an effective applied magnetic field in momentum space, and the Weyl surface plasmon polariton dispersion is strikingly similar to magnetoplasmons in ordinary metals. In particular, this implies the existence of nonreciprocal surface modes. In addition, we obtain the nonretarded Weyl magnetoplasmon modes, which acquire an additional longitudinal magnetic-field dependence. These predicted surface plasmon results are observable manifestations of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals and might have technological applications.

Magnetotransport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals

We present a theory of magnetotransport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric and the sound absorption coefficients exhibit strong and anisotropic magnetic field dependences. We also discuss properties of magneto-plasmons and magneto-polaritons, whose existence is entirely determined by the chiral anomaly. Finally, we discuss the conditions of applicability of the quasi-classical description of electron transport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly.

Tunable circular dichroism due to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals

Weyl semimetals are a three dimensional gapless topological phase in which bands intersect at arbitrary points -- the Weyl nodes -- in the Brillouin zone. These points carry a topological quantum number known as the \emph{chirality} and always appear in pairs of opposite chiralities. The notion of chirality leads to anomalous non-conservation of chiral charge, known as the \emph{chiral anomaly}, according to which charge can be pumped between Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities by an electromagnetic field with non-zero $\boldsymbol{E}\cdot\boldsymbol{B}$. Here, we propose probing the chiral anomaly by measuring the optical activity of Weyl semimetals via circular dichroism. In particular, we observe that applying such an electromagnetic field on this state gives it a non-zero gyrotropic coefficient or a Hall-like conductivity, which may be detectable by routine circular dichroism experiments. This method also serves as a diagnostic tool to discriminate between Weyl and Dirac semimetals; the latter will give a null result. More generally, any experiment that probes a bulk correlation function that has the same symmetries as the gyrotropic coefficient can detect the chiral anomaly as well as differentiate between Dirac and Weyl semimetals.

Plasmon mode as a detection of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals

Weyl semimetals are one kind of three-dimensional gapless semimetal with nontrivial topology in the momentum space. The chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals manifests as a charge imbalance between the Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities induced by parallel electric and magnetic fields. We investigate the chiral anomaly effect on the plasmon mode in both intrinsic and doped Weyl semimetals within the random phase approximation. We prove that the chiral anomaly gives rise to a different plasmon mode in intrinsic Weyl semimetals. We also find the chiral anomaly leads to some exotic properties in the plasmon dispersion in doped Weyl semimetals. Consequently, the unconventional plasmon mode acts as a signature of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, by which the spectrum of plasmon provides a proper way to detect the Lifshitz transition.
