Wearing Sports Mouthguards to Prevent Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma.

The theme of the academic annual conferences held by the Chinese Stomatological Association from 2021 to 2023 was "Protecting Natural Teeth to Maintain Oral Health" and coincided with the 24th Winter Olympic Games that took place in Beijing in 2022, and thus prevention of oral and maxillofacial trauma once again attracted the attention of stomatological experts and the public. The incidence of oral and maxillofacial trauma caused by sports is around 25% to 34%1-5, and varies based on the type of sport and other factors, such as age, sex and the skill level of the participants. The risk of oral and maxillofacial trauma is extremely high in high-confrontation and high-speed sports, especially for children and adolescents. Wearing sports mouthguards when participating in sport is an effective way to prevent and reduce the incidence of oral and maxillofacial trauma in such sports, and is the simplest and most practical method of doing so. Sports have developed and gained in popularity significantly in China in recent years, but the awareness and use of sports mouthguards are low. Based on the above background, the Chinese Stomatological Association advocates that athletes and sport participants should wear mouthguards in various confrontational and high-speed sports, and calls on dental practitioners and sports-related organisations to actively support the popularisation and application of sports mouthguards to prevent or alleviate oral and maxillofacial trauma and to raise awareness and increase knowledge of methods to protect natural teeth.

Preserving Natural Teeth to Maintain Oral Health.

Oral health is an important component of general health, and oral disease is one of the most common human diseases that not only affects oral health and quality of life, but is also closely associated with overall health. Natural teeth are important functional organs and are crucial to oral functions and maintaining a healthy life. The Chinese Stomatological Association (CSA) has released this position statement on "Preserving Natural Teeth to Maintain Oral Health", which is one of the most important achievements of the 2021 to 2023 CSA Annual Congress themed "Healthy Mouth, Protecting Natural Teeth", advocating that everyone should take effective measures to protect their natural teeth, maintain oral health and promote general health.

Guideline for cleft lip and palate team approach management

Cleft lip and palate team approach management refers to the goal of achieving good appearance, normal function and mental health for patients with cleft lip and palate, through multidisciplinary cooperation, jointly formulating treatment plans, using surgical reconstruction as the main method, and performing the most appropriate treatment at the best time point. The team is a multidisciplinary medical team, and at least it is recommended to include oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, pathological phoneticians, and psychological counselors. This guideline was formally applied by the Society of Cleft Lip and Palate and approved by Chinese Stomatological Association in 2019, and was officially released in 2022. This guideline describes the cleft lip and palate team approach management for Chinese, covering the primary and secondary surgical repair for cleft lip, cleft palate, and cleft alveolar, and orthodontic treatment, speech therapy, nursing, psychology, etc.

Cariology and Endodontology in China forges ahead together with Chinese Journal of Stomatology

The articles related to Cariology and Endodontology published in Chinese Journal of Stomatology from August 1953 to July 2023 were summarized. Total 1 247 articles accounting for 12.5% of the journal's publications were involved, which reflected the progress of Cariology and Endodontology in China. The publications of five pioneers and nine chairmen of Chinese Stomatological Association Society of Cariology and Endodontology were also recorded. Whether in clinical diagnosis and treatment or cutting-edge scientific research of Cariology and Endodontology, China is catching up with or has exceeded the international professions. Over the past 70 years, China has made outstanding achievements in dental caries and endodontics. Regards to occlusal diseases, dental developmental diseases, pulp biology, pulp and periradicular diseases, and operative dentistry, a significant progress also has been made. While the articles published in the Chinese Journal of Stomatology represent only a portion of the approaches within Cariology and Endodontology, they nonetheless provide valuable insights into the development of these fields in China.

Technical specification for orthodontic transmission straight wire technique

Malocclusion is an oral disease with a high prevalence. The goal of orthodontic treatment is health, aesthetics, function and stability. The transmission straight wire appliance and technique is an innovative orthodontic system with independent intellectual property rights invented by Professor Jiuxiang Lin's team based on decades of clinical experience, which provides a new solution for the non-surgical correction of skeletal malocclusions, especially class Ⅲ malocclusion, and it is also a good carrier for the implementation of the concept of healthy orthodontics. Due to the lack of guidelines, how to implement standardized application of transmission straight wire technique remains a problem to be solved. This technical specification was formed by combining the guidance from Professor Jiuxiang Lin and joint revision by a number of authoritative experts from the Orthodontic Special Committee, Chinese Stomatological Association, with reference to relevant literatures, and combined with abundant clinical experience of many experts. This specification aims to provide reference to standardize the clinical application of transmission straight wire technique, so as to reduce the risk and complications, and finally to improve the clinical application level of this technique.

The role of the national oral health program in the development of oral health service and related thinkings

Conception of public health was firstly put forward by American professor Winslow. Ensuring and promoting the health of general population is the key connotation for the definition of public health. Oral disease has become a public health problem. Caries which preventable and curable is the most common oral disease and the etiology is also clear. Oral health comprehensive intervention program for children in central and western regions was set up in 2008 by Chinese government. The program included sealing on the first permanent molar and oral health education towards primary school children covering mid-west area. This was the first oral health program invested by government and managed by Chinese Stomatological Association. Six years later, the program was popularized to the whole nation, and renamed as national oral health comprehensive intervention program for children in China. The program had made deep impact on development of oral health service in China. The study tries to analyze the challenges of oral health service through reviewing the background, content, organization and effectiveness of the program, aiming to provide suggestions on policy, financing, system, ability and technology for the future development.

Expert consensus for selective laser melting metal prostheses

Having been widely reviewed and revised, a recommended clinical expert consensus based on the results of experimental and clinical studies for selective laser melting (SLM) metal prostheses was released by the Society of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Chinese Stomatological Association. This expert consensus formulates the standardized operation procedures for SLM metal restoration and is aimed at standardizing the clinical application of SLM metal restoration and improving the quality and long-term success rate of SLM metal prostheses. At the same time, this expert consensus will help to widely promote the clinical usage of this technique.

Guideline for chairside computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing all ceramic rehabilitation

With the rapid development of digital techniques and the lack of reference standards for chairside computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) operation and application, it is imperative to draft guidelines for chairside CAD/CAM restoration techniques for all ceramics. Therefore, the Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association recruited experts to compose a recommended application guideline based on the relevant literatures and clinical experiences, including the selection of indications, tooth preparation, optical impression making and other key steps. This guideline is aimed at providing a standardized operation procedure to improve the quality and long-term success rate of chairside CAD/CAM rehabilitation for all ceramics.

Expert consensus on orbital defects restoration with prosthesis

Orbital defect is a common type of maxillofacial defect, which can not be reconstructed by surgical means at present. However, there is no expert consensus on how to make prosthesis accurately and quickly to reconstruct the appearance of patients. In order to solve this problem, the Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association invited several experts and professors from related professional fields in China to jointly study and develop this expert consensus. The purpose of this consensus is to comprehensively explain the knowledge of prosthesis in repairing orbital defects from the aspects of basic theory, prosthesis principles, prosthesis materials and prosthesis techniques, and to guide more prosthesis physicians to understand and master these knowledge and techniques. So as to improve the overall level of orbital defect repair and reconstruction in China, improve the quality of life of such patients, and better serve the majority of patients.

Guidelines for chairside computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing rehabilitation with resin-ceramic composites

Based on evidence-based clinical and material researches, the Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association organized a panel of experts to write a recommended application guideline via in-depth discussion and literature reviewing. This guideline formulates the standardized operation procedures for the clinical usage of chairside computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) rehabilitation with resin-ceramic composites, aiming at guiding and specifying this clinical technique. This guideline will help to improve the quality, the clinical efficacy, and the long-term success rate of chairside CAD/CAM rehabilitation with resin-ceramic composites via standardizing this restoration technique. At the same time, this guideline will contribute to the clinical promotion of this technique.

Expert consensus on the space maintainer in children

The Society of Pediatric Dentistry of Chinese Stomatological Association convened experts from well-known medical colleges and hospitals in China to discuss the clinical applications of space maintainer in children. The research results and experiences in diagnoses and treatments at home and abroad in recent years were used for reference. After multiple discussions and revisions, a consensus on recommended application was developed. The expert consensus formulate the design, indication selection and standardized clinical operation process of space maintainer in children, so as to guide and standardize the clinical application of space maintainer in children and to accelerate its clinical promotion.

Clinical guideline of using gold alloy for the restoration of tooth defect

Since the Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association was widely soliciting opinions, a recommended application guideline which based on experimental research, clinical and evidence-based medicine results was formed after several discussions and revisions. This guideline formulates the standardized operation procedures for the restoration of tooth defects with gold alloys, in order to guide and standardize the clinical application of gold alloy restorations, to improve the clinical efficacy and long-term survival rate of gold alloy restorations, and to promote the clinical application of gold alloy technique for restoration of dental defects.

Consensus of experts on the medical risk prevention for the patients with cardiovascular diseases during dental treatment (2022 edition)

With the aging process of population in the society, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in China is increasing continuously and the number of dental patients with CVD is increasing gradually too. Due to the lack of guidelines for dental patients with CVD in our country, how to implement standardized preoperative evaluation and perioperative risk prevention remains a problem to be solved for dentists at present. The present expert consensus was reached by combining the clinical experiences of the expert group of the Fifth General Dentistry Special Committee, Chinese Stomatological Association and respiratory and cardiology experts in diagnosis and treatment for CVD patients, and by systematically summarizing the relevant international guidelines and literature regarding the relationship between CVD and oral diseases and the diagnosis and treatment of dental patients with heart failure, hypertension and antithrombotic therapy. The consensus aims to provide, for the dental clinicians, the criteria on diagnosis and treatment of CVD in dental patients in China so as to reduce the risk and complications, and finally to improve the treatment levels of dental patients with CVD in China.

Consensus of experts on the oral health management and medical risk prevention for the patients with chronic airway diseases (2022 edition)

Today, there is greater awareness on the association between oral diseases and respiration diseases after the outbreak of COVID-19. However, confusion regarding the oral health management and medical risk prevention for patients with chronic airway diseases has been remained among dental clinicians. Therefore, the dental experts of the Fifth General Dentistry Special Committee, Chinese Stomatological Association, combined with the experts of respiratory and critical care medicine, undertook the formation of consensus on the oral health management of patients with chronic airway diseases in order to help dental clinicians to evaluate medical risks and make better treatment decision in clinical practice. In the present consensus report, the relationship of oral diseases and chronic airway diseases, the oral health management and the treatment recommendations of patients with chronic airway diseases are provided.

Expert consensus on standardized chair-side first aid of medical emergencies during dental management

The medical emergencies during oral diagnosis and treatment needs urgent treatment. If the emergent situations are not managed immediately and correctly, the consequences may be lethal to the patients. Due to the actuality that most of the dental clinicians are insufficient in medical first aid theoretically and practically, the Society of Stomatological Emergency, Chinese Stomatological Association organized some domestic famous dental and medical experts to write the present clinical diagnosis and treatment expert consensus on the basis of repeated discussion.The consensus aims to guide the dental clinician to take correct steps in the process of chair-side first aid in case of medical emergency, so as to reduce the risks, to prevent medical emergencies and to ensure the life safety and health of patients.

Guideline of nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation technique in dental outpatient

The use of nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation to relieve anxiety and pain in dental outpatient treatment has been a very mature and safe technique in the world. This technology has been introduced into China for nearly 20 years, and many clinical cases have proved its safety, practicability and effectiveness, which can meet the clinical needs of patients. To further standardize and popularize this technique, the Society of Sedation and Analgesia, Chinese Stomatological Association formed the recommended application guidelines after many discussions and revisions on the basis of widely soliciting opinions and referring to relevant literatures. It covers indications, contraindications, standardized operation procedures, occupational protection, identification and treatment of adverse reactions, training and other aspects. This guideline can be used as a reference for the use of nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation techniques in the outpatient setting of dentistry.

Expert consensus on stabilization with splint in traumatic dental injuries of permanent tooth

Stabilization with splint is an important surgical technology in traumatic dental injuries of permanent tooth. In order to standardize the clinical application of the technique and to improve the therapeutic effects of traumatic injured teeth, the Society of Stomatological Emergency, Chinese Stomatological Association organized relevant professional experts and put forward an expert consensus on the basis of considerable discussion. The contents of the present expert consensus covered indications for tooth fixation, material selection of splints and operation methods, applying to the treatment of tooth loosening, tooth displacement and tooth avulsion replantation caused by traumatic injuries. It is also suitable for preoperative and prognosis evaluations of traumatic injured teeth before tooth fixation.

Experts' consensus on ectopic eruption of the maxillary permanent first molar

Ectopic eruption of the maxillary permanent first molar refers to its deviation from the normal position due to some factors during the eruption process, which will lead to root resorption and early loss of the adjacent second primary molar, mesial movement itself, or serious malocclusion. To solve these problems, the Society of Pediatric Dentistry of Chinese Stomatological Association organized pediatric dental experts from 16 universities and hospitals, including West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to carry out a panel discussions. The research, and diagnosis and treatment experiences of ectopic eruption of maxillary permanent first molar at home and abroad in recent years were also referred to. The present guideline was eventually developed for the reference of dental clinicians.

Guideline for prosthetic dentistry in elderly patients

China has entered an aging society. The incidence rate of dental defects, dentition defects and edentulism in elderly patients is high, and the number of patients is increasing. The physiological and pathological conditions are complex for the elderly. Moreover, the expectation of dental restoration is also increasing, which is a great challenge in clinic. Currently, few relevant guidelines or standards have been issued nationally or internationally. The Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association, based on extensive solicitation of opinions and reference to relevant literature, has set an application guideline after extensive discussions and revisions. The guideline covers the common clinical treatment scenarios for prosthetic dentistry in elderly patients. The present guideline consists of general principles, basic workflows and important considerations to provide reference for prosthodontist and relevant medical practitioners.
