Enhancing organizational performance through knowledge-oriented leadership: the neglected role of employee creative work behavior and digital citizenship behavior in IT industry

PurposeDrawing upon Drucker’s theory of productivity, this study proposes to examine the relationship between knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) and knowledge worker performance (KWP) within the Chinese information technology (IT) industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, this study examines the direct connection between KWP and organizational performance (OP), as well as mediated via employee creative work behavior (ECWB), and digital citizenship behavior (DCB).Design/methodology/approachThe data for the research was collected from a sample size of 322 individuals working in the IT industry context in China, with varying levels of seniority (lower, middle and upper). The relationship was examined by employing Smart PLS 4 in a current study.FindingsThe study findings revealed a significant and conspicuous effect of KOL on KWP. The outcomes divulged the fact that KOL has a positive impact on the ECWB, and DCB improves the performance of knowledge workers, resulting in an overall augmentation in the organizational performance of the IT industry.Originality/valuePresently, there exist a scarcity of substantial empirical studies to thoroughly examine the influence of KOL, ECWB, DCB, KWP and OP in the domain of Chinese IT industry research, particularly in the setting of the pandemic. The study makes a substantial contribution to the extant literature on the topic via empirically examining the association among KOL, KWP and organizational performance, as well as evaluating the mediation mechanism of both employee creative work behavior and digital citizenship behavior.

Evaluation of Green Industry Innovation Efficiency Based on Three-Stage DEA Model: A Case Study of Chinese Information Technology Industry

The information technology industry as a new engine driving China’s economy has made more and more contributions to Chinese sustainable development. At present, it has overtaken real estate as the new cradle of Chinese billionaires. The information technology industry not only has its own characteristics of high economic, social benefits, and small impact on the ecological environment, but also can enable the green development of the economy and society. So it is the core industry to support the realization of the “double carbon” goal. This paper evaluated the innovation efficiency of 80 enterprises in the software and information technology service from 2017 to 2018 by constructing a three-stage DEA model. It puts forward countermeasures, which points out the direction for the development of environmental protection and green low-carbon industry. Empirical results show that environmental variables have different effects on innovation efficiency. After excluding the influence of environmental and random factors, the increase in innovation efficiency, while generally significant, is not high. Low innovation efficiency is caused by both pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, especially pure technical efficiency. Enterprises’ adjusted scale returns are mostly increasing; the innovation investment scale is not optimal. Regional differences of enterprise innovation exist; the East and Midwest have obvious polarization both in quantity and quality. These results quantify the effect of the factors affecting enterprise innovation efficiency and put forward policies and suggestions for promoting the development of China’s information technology industry accordingly.

A Study on the Relationship Between Technical Independent Directors and Enterprise Innovation Under Media Attention

Independent director system plays a unique role in increasing the diversity of board members and increasing a company's intellectual capital. Based on prospect theory and signal theory, the media can also be considered to change the reputation level of independent directors on the board of directors of listed companies by disclosing relevant information about them and company operations. Moreover the media attention can not only accelerate the dissemination and promotion of knowledge and information, but also weaken the competitiveness of companies, reduce the value of companies, and then weaken their enthusiasm to invest in innovative projects This paper takes listed companies in the Chinese information technology industry from 2012 to 2017 as the research object and uses the multiple linear regression method to model the relationship between technical independent directors and enterprise innovation under the attention of the media. It is found that the technical independent director plays a positive role in consulting, supervising and strategic decision-making, which can improve the company’s innovation performance. At the same time, media attention weakens the positive impact of technology independent directors on enterprise innovation. The outcomes improve our understanding of the role of media in enterprise innovation and provide a new perspective and reference value for the construction of independent director systems and enterprise innovation.

The impact of digital technologies on modern society. An example of a social credit rating system in China

The issue on the first principles of Internet building in China has been considered. An overview of establishment has been made and the specifics of the development of the Chinese information technology industry in recent years has been analysed. The influence of the state policy on digital technology market has been studied. The principles of Chinese authorities’ actions in relation to the domestic and foreign high tech markets have been highlighted. The causes of the Chinese industry rapid development, based on the state activity aimed at supporting the local manufacturers, have been analysed. Protectionism policy defining the government control pattern has been evaluated. Chinese development main program scale, embracing not only national, but also world economics, has been considered. It has been shown how domestic economy policy coincides with Chinese government foreign policy and how it is directly reflected in it. A parallel has been drawn between the principle of establishing of social credit system and the idea of counting merits and drawbacks, laying in the basis of finely built system of rewards and punishments of traditional Chinese society. A connection of this tradition with the official goal of the system, stated by the government of China to teach the Chinese society to become more honest by complete surveillance over people, has been shown. It has been shown how this system classifies people into several categories, creating the lists of those to reward and those to censure. The mechanism of how the state uses private companies’ resources, applying all its power to influence on them, has been considered. A critical analysis of the foundations of the system from the point of view of Western democracy values has been carried out. An overview of development prospects of the studied system and the assessment of the risks associated with it have been made. It has been noted that despite the fact that the basic ideas for the system are borrowed from the international practice of the financial sector, making decisions on authorizing going beyond the judicial system and transferring the classification of people in the lists of good and bad to the level of algorithms run counter to the principles of European and international law.

Developing Graduate Employability Indicators for the Chinese Information Technology Industry

This paper studies the employability requirements from the IT industry’s perspective. As the Chinese IT industry experiencing the development bloom, the Chinese IT graduates are also facing the higher standard of their comprehensive competency by the Chinese IT company employers. Based on a previously published IT employability indicator model, this research has conducted an industry-wide survey to further verify the validity of individual indicators. The research result shows that the proposed IT employability indicators can meet the industry requirements, but there is still room for improvement. The research findings can contribute to the university IT program development or serve as a benchmark tool across institutes.

Apple's disaster: Linking two‐sided markets and strategic delegation

Asymmetric pricing structure and different intergroup network externalities are characteristics of two‐sided markets not captured in the analysis of one‐sided markets. Focusing on Cournot duopoly where membership decision may be delegated to a manager, several equilibrium regimes are sustained depending on the fixed cost of managerial hiring and strength of the network externality exerted by the side whose demand is more price sensitive. The change from null to full delegation sharpens the asymmetric pricing structure and reduces the price level in two‐sided markets. Contrary to one‐sided markets with direct network effects, the prisoner's dilemma holds for sufficiently strong indirect network externalities. Imperfect interside discrimination of managerial incentives ensures profit maximization and efficient consumers' allocation. Private hiring should occur when the two‐sided market exhibits symmetric pricing structure. An explanation for Apple's unprecedented event is provided. The reduction of revenue and managerial bonus in 2016 may be justified by the dissemination of full delegation in the Chinese information technology industry. Apple's upcoming strategy may consist on reducing both access prices, although the side whose demand is more price sensitive should have a greater price reduction. Alternatively, improving the content quality may constitute Apple's corporate strategy, thereby inducing a skimming pricing strategy on Chinese rivals.

Managing careers: experiences of successful women in the Chinese IT industry

PurposeThis paper seeks to examine the career experiences of seven women who have developed successful careers in the Chinese information technology (IT) industry, focusing on the way they managed their careers and the implications this has for women's career theory in China.Design/methodology/approachPersonal narrative method is used to explore the women's cumulated experiences of career management in order to draw out their feelings and attitudes.FindingsFindings demonstrated convergence between western career theory and the situation of these successful Chinese women in IT, especially in family/career role management. Nevertheless, the paper argues that deeply embedded values in China encourage a rejection of planning and proactivity in women's career management resulting in a lack of applicability of western theory.Research limitations/implicationsFindings are based on a small sample size. Personal narrative method is highly subjective and “contaminated” by selective recall of information due to the deterioration or concealment of certain key factors. However, this finding in itself contains interesting implications for international career research.Practical implicationsThe career experiences of these women could provide role‐modelling to other women who are also pursuing careers in the IT industry in China.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the developing discourse of women's career experiences within Chinese society. It highlights constraints and limitations of applying western models and traditional research techniques. It advocates a broad, contextualised approach that incorporates a stronger emphasis on internal and social values.

A number of Chinese science and technology enterprises have become extremely competitive. This paper explores the basis for learning and innovation in Stone Group, Legend Group and Founder Group. Their dynamism is found to be based upon extra-budgetary finance, access to the technology resources of the state, new forms of governance, strategies of integration between R&D, marketing and manufacturing and learning from foreign partners. The experience of these firms shows that privatisation is not necessarily needed for innovation, and may actually impede development when technological resources are concentrated in state organisations.
