Efficacy and Safety of Chinese Herbal Medicine in Patients with Acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Protocol for a Randomized Placebo-Controlled Double-Blinded Multicenter Trial

Introduction: The popular traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound FYTF-919 (Zhong Feng Xing Nao prescription) may improve outcome from acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) through effects on brain edema, hematoma absorption, and the immune system. This study is to assess whether FYTF-919 is safe and effective as compared to matching placebo treatment in patients with acute ICH. Methods: The ongoing Chinese Herbal medicine in patients with Acute INtracerebral hemorrhage (CHAIN) is a multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial of FYTF-919 in patients with acute ICH at 20–30 hospital sites in China. Eligible ICH patients presenting within 48 h after symptom onset are randomly allocated to receive either FYTF-919 (100 mL per day × 28 d, oral) or matching placebo. A sample size of 1,504 patients is estimated to provide 90% power (α 0.05) to detect a ≥20% improvement in average utility-weight scores on the modified Rankin scale (UW-mRS) assessed at 90 days, with 6% non-adherence and 10% lost to follow-up. The primary efficacy outcome is UW-mRS at 90 days. Secondary outcomes include binary measures of the mRS, neurological impairment on the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale, and health-related quality of life on the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L scale at different time points over 6 months of follow-up. The key safety measure is serious adverse events. Conclusion: CHAIN is on schedule to provide reliable evidence over the benefits of a popular herbal TCM for the treatment of acute ICH.

Cross-Sectional Survey of Acupuncturists in the United States Who Prescribed Chinese Herbal Medicine for Patients with Symptoms Likely Related to COVID-19.

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the prescribing of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) by licensed acupuncturists in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A 28-question survey with nine branching questions was disseminated through collegial networks, paid advertisements, and a study website in April-July 2021. Participants indicated that they were licensed acupuncturists who treated more than five patients for symptoms likely related to COVID-19 to gain entry to the full survey. Surveys were undertaken electronically through the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) system. Results: The survey was undertaken by 103 participants representing all US geographic regions and had an average of 17 years in practice. Sixty-five percent received or intended to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Phone and videoconference were the predominant methods of patient contact; granules and pill forms of CHM were the most prescribed. A wide variety of information sources were used in devising patient treatments inclusive of anecdotal, observational, and scientific sources. Most patients were not receiving biomedical treatment. Ninety-seven percent of participants reported that they had no patients die of COVID-19, and the majority reported that <25% of their patients developed long hauler syndrome (post-acute sequelae SARS-CoV-2 infection). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that licensed acupuncturists were treating COVID-19 infected individuals in the United States during the early stages of the pandemic, and for many such patients this was the only therapeutic intervention they had access to from a licensed health care provider. Information disseminated from China through collegial networks, along with published sources including scientific studies, informed the approach to treatment. This study provides insight into an unusual circumstance in which clinicians needed to establish evidence-based approaches to the treatment of a new disease during a public health emergency.

Effectiveness of Chinese Herbal Medicine in Patients with COVID-19 During the Omicron Wave in Hong Kong: A Retrospective Case-Controlled Study.

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron led to the most serious outbreak of COVID-19 in Hong Kong in 2022. Under the pressure of a high volume of patients and limited medical resources, Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been extensively used. This is a case-control study of the infected patients that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of CHM using data extracted from the Hong Kong Baptist University Telemedicine Chinese Medicine Centre database. Patients with COVID-19 confirmed by either a rapid antigen test or a polymerase chain reaction who had completed two consultations and taken CHM within 10 days of the first positive test were included in the study (CHM group, [Formula: see text]). The matched control cases were those who did not take CHM within 10 days of the first positive test and were based on age ([Formula: see text] 3 years), vaccine doses ([Formula: see text] 3 doses, or 3 doses), and gender (no-CHM group, [Formula: see text]). The outcomes included the negative conversion time (NCT, primary outcome), total score of individual symptoms, number of the reported symptoms, and individual symptom disappearance rates. The NCT of the CHM group (median days: 7.0, interquartile range: 6.0-8.0) was significantly shorter than that of the no-CHM group (8.0, 7.0-10.5; [Formula: see text]). CHM treatment significantly reduced the total score of individual symptoms ([Formula: see text]) and the number of the reported symptoms ([Formula: see text]) as compared with that of the no-CHM group. Additionally, the symptom disappearance rates of symptoms such as chills, cough, sputum, dry throat, itching throat, headache, chest tightness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue were significantly higher in the CHM group than in the no-CHM group. In conclusion, CHM intervention can significantly reduce NCT and COVID-19 symptoms. Chinese medicine can be accurately prescribed based on a telemedical consultation.

Effects of Chinese herbal medicine in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia: A nationwide cohort study in Taiwan.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects elderly males, with progression presenting the risk of urinary complications and eventual surgical intervention. We aimed to evaluate the effects of Chinese herbal medicine in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This retrospective cohort study analyzed claims data in Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from 2001 to 2013. A total of 4142 patients newly diagnosed as benign prostatic hyperplasia were enrolled and divided into cohorts of Chinese herbal medicine users and nonusers by performing 1:1 propensity score matching. The risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia-related complications was assessed by the Cox proportional hazard model. The cumulative incidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia-related surgeries was assessed by Kaplan-Meier method. During the study period, the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia-related complications was lower in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort than non-Chinese herbal medicine cohort with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.82 (95% confidence interval 0.73-0.92) after controlling for multiple variables. Subgroup analysis revealed that Chinese herbal medicine users had a significantly lower risk of urinary tract infection (adjusted hazard ratio 0.67, 95% confidence interval 0.50-0.89) and urinary retention (adjusted hazard ratio 0.83, 95% confidence interval 0.72-0.97). In addition, Chinese herbal medicine users also had a lower incidence rate of benign prostatic hyperplasia-related surgery (32.14 vs 40.20, adjusted hazard ratio 0.74, 95% confidence interval 0.61-0.89) and a longer surgery-free interval than non-Chinese herbal medicine users (3.98 vs 3.00 mean person-year, P < 0.001). Data revealed Salviae miltiorrhizae and Ji-Sheng-Shen-Qi-Wan as the most commonly prescribed Chinese herbal medicine by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Our study demonstrated that Chinese herbal medicine might have effects in the benign prostatic hyperplasia-related complications and surgeries in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Effect of Chinese herbal medicine for patients with benign thyroid nodules in adults: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background:Thyroid nodules (TN) are discrete lesions within the thyroid gland and are a common clinical problem detected in 19% to 68% of people. TN are more common as age increases and occur more frequently in women. TN can cause pressure symptoms, cosmetic complaints, and thyroid dysfunction. Treatment for benign thyroid nodules includes thyroid hormone therapy, surgery, radioiodine treatment, percutaneous ethanol injection therapy, and laser or radiofrequency treatment to shrink nodules. In China and many other countries, doctors use Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) to treat TN. However, systematic review and meta-analysis has not been found to assess the effects and safety of CHM in curing TN at present. Hence, the systematic review is conducted to scientifically and methodically evaluate the value of its effectiveness and safety of CHM on TN.Methods:Literatures related to CHM for TN from the establishment of the database to November 2020 will be retrieved from the following databases: PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SpringerLink, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), Wanfang Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP). There are no language restrictions for retrieving literatures. Case reports, animal studies, editorials, expert opinions, reviews without original data, and studies on pediatric population were excluded. Eligible randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the effectiveness and safety of CHM in TN patients will be put in the study including nodule volume reduction ≥50%, pressure symptoms, cosmetic complaints, quality of life, and adverse events. By scanning the titles, abstracts and full texts, 2 reviewers will independently select studies, extract data, and assess the quality of study. Meta-analysis of RCTs will be conducted using Review Manager 5.1 software. The results will be presented as risk ratio for dichotomous data, and standardized or weighted mean difference for continuous data.Result:This study will provide high-quality available evidence for the treatment of TN with CHM based on nodule volume reduction ≥50%, pressure symptoms, cosmetic complaints, quality of life, and adverse events.Conclusion:The systematic review will to evaluate the efficacy of CHM in treating benign thyroid nodules in adults and provide evidence for clinicians.INPLASY registration number:INPLASY2020120093.

Adjunctive Chinese Herbal Medicine Treatment is Associated With an Improved Survival Rate in Patients With Cervical Cancer in Taiwan: A Matched Cohort Study.

BackgroundCervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in Taiwan. Some patients take Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). However, very few current studies have ascertained the usage and efficacy of CHM in patients with cervical cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of complementary CHM among patients with cervical cancer in Taiwan.MethodsWe included the newly diagnosed cervical cancer patients who were registered in the Taiwanese Registry for Catastrophic Illness Patients Database between 2000 and 2010. The end of follow-up period was December 31, 2011. Patients who were less than 20 years old, had missing information for age, withdrew from the National Health Insurance (NHI) program during the follow-up period, or only received other TCM interventions such as acupuncture or tuina massage were excluded from our study. After performing 1:1 frequency matching by age and index date, we enrolled 7521 patients in both CHM and non-CHM user groups. A Cox regression model was used to compare the hazard ratios (HRs) of the risk of mortality. The Kaplan-Meier curve was used to compare the difference in survival time.ResultsAccording to the Cox hazard ratio model mutually adjusted for CHM use, age, comorbidity, treatment, and chemotherapeutic agents used, we found that CHM users had a lower hazard ratio of mortality risk (adjusted HR = 0.29, 95%CI = 0.27-0.31). The survival probability was higher for patients in the CHM group. Bai-Hua-She-She-Cao (Herba Oldenlandiae, synonym Herba Hedyotis diffusae) and Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San were the most commonly prescribed single herb and Chinese herbal formula, respectively.ConclusionsAdjunctive CHM may have positive effects of reducing mortality rate and improving the survival probability for cervical cancer patients. Further evidence-based pharmacological investigations and clinical trials are warranted to confirm the findings in our study.

Decreased overall mortality rate with Chinese herbal medicine usage in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis in Taiwan

BackgroundLiver cirrhosis is one of the main causes of the morbidity and mortality in liver diseases. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has long been used for the clinical treatment of liver diseases. This study was designed to explore the usage frequency and prescription patterns of CHM for patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis and to evaluate the long-term effects of CHM on overall mortality.MethodsTwo thousand four hundred sixty-seven patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis (ICD-9-CM code: 571.2, 571.5, and 571.6) diagnosed between 2000 and 2009 in Taiwan were identified from the registry for catastrophic illness patients. Of these, 149 CHM users and 298 CHM non-users were matched for age, gender, and Charlson comorbidity index score. The chi-squared test, paired Student’s t-test, Cox proportional hazard model, and Kaplan–Meier method were applied for various comparisons between these groups of patients.ResultsCHM-treated patients showed a lower overall mortality risk compared with non-treated patients (Multivariable: p < 0.0001; HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.42–0.69). The cumulative incidence of overall mortality was lower in the CHM-treated group (stratified log-rank test, p = 0.0002). The strongest CHM co-prescription pattern- Yin-Chen-Hao-Tang (YCHT) → Long-Dan-Xie-Gan-Tang (LDXGT) had the highest support, followed by Zhi-Zi (ZZ) → Yin-Chen-Wu-Ling-San (YCWLS) and Bai-Hua-She-She-Cao (BHSSC) → Da-Huang (DaH).ConclusionCHM, as adjunct therapy, might decrease the risk of overall mortality in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis. CHM co-prescription patterns and network analysis showed that comprehensive herbal medicines have a protective role against liver fibrosis. Further studies are required to enhance the knowledge of safety and efficacy of CHM in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Is Helpful for Survival Improvement in Patients With Multiple Myeloma in Taiwan: A Nationwide Retrospective Matched-Cohort Study.

Aim of the Study:The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Chinese herbal medicine is beneficial for survival improvement in patients with multiple myeloma.Materials and Methods:We performed a 1:1 propensity score–matched cohort study to analyze patients with multiple myeloma diagnosed between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2012, through the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who received Chinese herbal medicine therapy from the initial date of diagnosis of multiple myeloma to December 31, 2012, were included in the Chinese herbal medicine group. Patients who were not treated with Chinese herbal medicine during the same interval were categorized in the non-Chinese herbal medicine group. A Cox regression model was used to adjust for sex, age, comorbidities, and drug use. Hazard ratios were also compared between the 2 groups.Results:A total of 312 patients were identified after 1:1 propensity score matching. The patients had similar basic characteristics. A better survival status was found in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort (log-rank test, P < .0001). Finally, 49 patients in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort and 96 patients in the non-Chinese herbal medicine cohort died (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.35, 95% confidence interval = 0.24-0.51). The effect of survival improvement from Chinese herbal medicine in patients with multiple myeloma could be observed when prescriptions had the duration of ≥30 days.Conclusions:Our results showed that patients with multiple myeloma could benefit from Chinese herbal medicine treatment, which could improve the survival rate in Taiwan. The findings offer important ideas for further study.

Efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine for cough variant asthma: A network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

IntroductionCough variant asthma (CVA) can lead to chronic cough or typical asthma. Though western medications have shown benefit, many patients do not achieve long term effects. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been used for patients with CVA, however its benefit is unclear. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different CHM for patients with CVA using network meta-analysis. MethodsEmbase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI and WanFang databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the efficacy of CHM with Montelukast (western medicine). Studies selection, data extraction, and quality evaluation were independently conducted by two reviewers. Network meta-analysis was performed to rank different therapies according to efficacy and adverse rates. ResultsA total of 25 RCTs involving 2635 participants were included in the study. The study indicated that compared with Montelukast, the efficacy rate of CHM was significantly higher (Odd ratio (OR) = 4.13; 95% credible intervals (CI): 3.29–5.20). Only 8 RCTs reported the adverse reactions. The study suggested fewer adverse effects of CHM (OR = 0.26; 95% CI: 0.16-0.43) when compared with Montelukast. In the network meta-analysis, Suhuang Zhike Capsule (SZC) + Montelukast, Xiaoqinglong Decoction (XQLD) + Montelukast, Zhisousan + Montelukast and ephedra soup + Montelukast were most likely to take effect in CVA patients, while SZC + Montelukast and Montelukast were more likely to have adverse effects. ConclusionsCompared with Montelukast, CHMs were more effective and had less adverse effects in the treatment of CVA.

Chinese herbal medicine for patients living with HIV in Guangxi province, China: an analysis of two registries

Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) is the recommended first line therapy for patients with HIV. Since 2004, Chinese government has provided free Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for Chinese HIV/AIDS patients. Data of living patients with HIV from the NFTCMP database and Center for Disease Control (CDC) database during 2003–2016 in Guangxi province was obtained and compared. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their recorded treatment regimens. A total of 2954 patients with their treatment recorded in the two databases were included for analysis, their median age was 46 years (IQR = 36–59), and 64.63% were male. CHM regimens users had baseline CD4 cell counts (380.11 ± 240.59 cell/μL), approximately 100 cell/μL significantly higher than patients receiving CHM combined with ART regimens or only ART regimens. There was no significant difference in mortality among groups. All three regimens improved patients’ CD4 cell counts. Compared to the sharp improvement in ART group during the first 6 months, CD4 cell counts of patients in CHM group and CHM combined with ART group showed a smooth and steady rise. CD4 cell counts of the combined group remained much lower than ART group in the first 3 years, but overtook ART group in the fourth year.

To assess the effectiveness and safety of CHM in patients with PD, a systematic review and meta-analysis of current published evidence regarding CHM as treatment for PD would be conducted in this study. Effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine for patients with primary insomnia: A PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis.

Background:Traditional medicine is widely used for patients with primary insomnia, but the studies showed inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) versus placebo for primary insomnia patients.Methods:The electronic databases including PubMed, EmBase, Cochrane library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched to identify the RCTs published from inception till July 2018. The summary weighted mean difference (WMD) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) for Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), sleep onset latency, total sleep duration, Athens insomnia scale (AIS), and sleep efficiency were calculated using random-effects model.Results:Fifteen RCTs comprising 1500 patients were finally included in the meta-analysis. Overall, patients who received CHM had lower levels of PSQI (WMD: −2.36; 95% CI: −4.02 to −0.70; P = .005), sleep onset latency (WMD: −11.54; 95% CI: −20.55 to −2.54; P = .012), and AIS (WMD: −0.59; 95% CI: −0.97 to −0.22; P = .002) as compared with placebo. Moreover, the summary WMDs of CHM versus placebo were associated with higher total sleep duration (WMD: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.56–1.02; P < .001), and sleep efficiency (WMD: 9.72; 95% CI: 6.49–12.96; P < .001). The treatment effect on PSQI might be affected by publication year, sample size, mean age, percentage male, diagnostic tool, duration of insomnia, treatment duration, and study quality.Conclusion:The findings of this meta-analysis indicated that CHM could significantly improve the symptoms of insomnia than placebo for patients with primary insomnia.

Effects of Shuganjianpihuatanxingqi decoction on mild subclinical hypothyroidism: A SPIRIT compliant randomized controlled trial study protocol.

Introduction:Mild subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) can cause depression, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, or other hypothyroid symptoms, and even progress to hypothyroidism. The treatment of mild SCH is controversial. Shuganjianpihuatanxingqi decoction (SD) is a frequently prescribed Chinese herbal medicine in patients with mild SCH. However, scientific evidence is needed to confirm the therapeutic effect of SD.Methods and analysis:This study is a randomized, double-blind, and controlled clinical trial. A total of 228 participants with the diagnosis of mild SCH will be randomly assigned to the SD or placebo group in a ratio of 1:1. Participants will receive treatment for 12 weeks and undergo 12-month follow-up. The primary outcome measure is the thyroid-stimulating hormone level, and secondary outcomes will be the differences in the results of Thyroid-related Quality of Life Questionnaire, blood lipids, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Symptom Score Scale between baseline and at 12 weeks after intervention.Ethics and dissemination:The study has been approved by Guang’anmen Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (no.2018-005-ky-01). Effects of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in patients with diabetic kidney disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundDiabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and the primary cause of end-stage renal disease. Existing therapies for DKD are not sufficiently effective. We report the protocol of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of the use of traditional Chinese herbal medicine to treat patients with DKD.Methods/designThis will be a multicenter randomized controlled trial. A total of 266 patients with DKD (106 with early stage, 80 with middle-stage, and 80 with advanced-stage disease) with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73m2will be included. Participants with DKD of each stage will be randomly allocated at a 1:1 ratio to either the experimental group, which will receive Xiaozhen formula and basic treatment, or the control group, which will receive basic treatment only. The study duration will be 24 weeks. The primary outcome will be urinary microalbumin excretion rate for early stage DKD, 24-h urinary protein for middle-stage DKD, and eGFR for advanced-stage DKD. Adverse events will also be evaluated. Data for all outcome indicators will be collected at baseline and weeks 4, 12, and 24.DiscussionThis study will provide evidence of the effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in treating patients with DKD.Trial registrationChinese Clinical Trials Registry: ChiCTR-IOR-16010072. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials: Skin-patch of Chinese herbal medicine for patients with acute gouty arthritis.

To evaluate the evidence of the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal medicine skin-patches for patients with acute gouty arthritis. Acute gouty arthritis is a problem that can limit the level of activity and impair the quality of life. In China, many clinical studies have demonstrated that skin-patches of Chinese herbal medicines benefit patients with acute gouty arthritis. However, the reported clinical effects vary. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Three English databases including CENTRAL (1993 to February 2017), PubMed (1966 to February 2017) and EMBASE (1974 to February 2017) and four Chinese databases including Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, SinoMed and Wanfang (all, 1949 - February 2017) were searched. Randomized controlled trials that compared skin-patches of Chinese herbal medicine with or without conventional treatments to conventional treatments, no treatment or a placebo treatment for patients with acute gouty arthritis were included. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following the Cochrane process. Two authors selected the studies, extracted the data and evaluated the risk of bias of the included trials. Nineteen studies met our inclusion criteria. After synthesizing the data, the results showed that skin-patches of CHM combined with Western medicine seemed to be more effective than Western medicine alone for pain relief in patients with acute gouty arthritis and had fewer adverse events. Due to the quality of the data, larger and more rigorously designed clinical trials with proper outcome measures are necessary.

Chinese herbal medicine for patients with atrial fibrillation: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most clinically common cardiac arrhythmia. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been widely applied in the treatment of AF, However, to our knowledge, there has been no systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trails (RCTs) regarding the effectiveness of this treatment. Therefore, we provide a protocol to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CHM for AF. The databases reviewed to collect RCTs related to CHM treatment for AF will be as follows: 3 English literature databases, which are PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, and 3 Chinese literature databases, which are CBM, CNKI, and Wanfang. The data collection in the above-mentioned databases will be from the time when the respective databases were established to December 2017. The maintenance of sinus rhythm and p-wave dispersion will be accepted as the primary outcomes. Quality of life (QOL), such as QOL scale embolic events, bleeding events, and symptom improvement (such as chest distress, palpitations, etc) will be measured as secondary outcomes. Two reviewers will independently screen the titles, abstracts, or even full texts, and extract data. Methodological quality will be evaluated according to the Cochrane risk of bias. All analyses will be applied by RevMan (version 5.3). The results of study will be disseminated via both international conference and peer-review journal. The conclusion of our systematic review will provide evidence to judge whether CHM is an effective intervention for patient with AF.

Chinese Herbal Medicine as an Adjunctive Therapy Ameliorated the Incidence of Chronic Hepatitis in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

We conducted a National Health Insurance Research Database-based Taiwanese nationwide population-based cohort study to evaluate whether Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) treatment decreased the incidence of chronic hepatitis in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. A total of 81171 patients were diagnosed with breast cancer within the defined study period. After randomly equal matching, data from 13856 patients were analyzed. Hazard ratios of incidence rate of chronic hepatitis were used to determine the influence and therapeutic potential of CHM in patients with breast cancer. The patients with breast cancer receiving CHM treatment exhibited a significantly decreased incidence rate of chronic hepatitis even across the stratification of age, CCI score, and treatments. The cumulative incidence of chronic hepatitis for a period of seven years after initial breast cancer diagnosis was also reduced in the patients receiving CHM treatment. The ten most commonly used single herbs and formulas were effective in protecting liver function in patients with breast cancer, where Hedyotis diffusa and Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San were the most commonly used herbal agents. In conclusion, our study provided information that western medicine therapy combined with CHM as an adjuvant modality may have a significant impact on liver protection in patients with breast cancer.
