Chest computed tomography manifestations in neonates with chronic granulomatous disease

To study chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations in neonates with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) to provide clues for early diagnosis of this disease. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data and chest CT scan results of neonates diagnosed with CGD from January 2015 to December 2022 at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital. Nine neonates with CGD were included, with eight presenting respiratory symptoms as the initial sign. Chest CT findings included: consolidation in all 9 cases; nodules in all 9 cases, characterized by multiple, variably sized scattered nodules in both lungs; masses in 4 cases; cavities in 3 cases; abscesses in 6 cases; bronchial stenosis in 2 cases; pleural effusion, interstitial changes, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy each in 1 case. CT enhancement scans showed nodules and masses with uneven or ring-shaped enhancement; no signs of pulmonary emphysema, lung calcification, halo signs, crescent signs, bronchiectasis, or scar lesions were observed. There was no evidence of rib or vertebral bone destruction. Fungal infections were present in 8 of the 9 cases, including 6 with Aspergillus infections; three of these involved mixed infections with Aspergillus, with masses most commonly associated with mixed Aspergillus infections (3/4). The primary manifestations of neonatal CGD on chest CT are consolidation, nodules, and/or masses, with Aspergillus as a common pathogen. These features can serve as early diagnostic clues for neonatal CGD.

Chest ultrasound is better than CT in identifying septated effusion of patients with pleural disease

Septated pleural effusion is very common. The presence of septations in pleural effusion determines the local treatment strategy for such patients. Therefore, there is a pressing need for imaging techniques to assess the presence of septations. The objective of this research was to assess the diagnostic efficacy of computed tomography (CT) and chest ultrasound in identifying septated pleural effusion. We delineated the ultrasound and enhanced chest CT manifestations for diagnosing septated pleural effusions, and subsequently, we conducted a comparative analysis to assess the diagnostic efficacy of enhanced chest CT and ultrasound in identifying septated pleural effusions. Medical thoracoscopy served as the gold standard for confirming the diagnosis of septated pleural effusions. Ultrasound demonstrated a sensitivity of 82.6% (95% CI 73.3–89.7%) and a specificity of 100.0% (95% CI 98.1–NaN) for diagnosing septated pleural effusion. In comparison, enhanced chest CT exhibited a sensitivity of 59.8% (95% CI 49.0–69.9%) and a specificity of 87.0% (95% CI 81.5–91.4%). The positive predictive value for ultrasound was 100.0% (95% CI 95.3–100.0%), while for enhanced chest CT, it was 68.8% (95% CI 59.0–77.4%). Ultrasound yielded a negative predictive value of 92.3% (95% CI 87.5–NaN), and enhanced chest CT had a negative predictive value of 82.0% (95% CI 74.6–87.8%) in diagnosing septated pleural effusion. Thoracic ultrasound exhibits superior sensitivity and specificity compared to enhanced chest CT in diagnosing septated pleural effusions. Therefore, chest ultrasound is highly recommended as an adjunct for determining septated pleural effusion.

Chest CT Imaging Features of HIV/SARS-COV-2 Infected Patients from the Capital of Amazonas State

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 on global public health, emphasizing its severity and the efforts made to enhance diagnostic practices and clinical management. Chest Computed Tomography (CT) has been widely used to assess complications caused by the virus, particularly in patients coinfected with HIV. The study evaluated 29 chest CT scans, comparing HIV+ and HIV- patients. Among HIV+ patients, 66.7% reported regular antiretroviral therapy, and 43.8% had a CD4+ T cell count below 200 cells/mm3 . Coinfections were observed, including neurotoxoplasmosis and pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinical outcomes showed that 90% of patients were discharged, 3.5% were transferred, and 7% died, all of whom were HIV+ . CT findings revealed that HIV+ patients exhibited fewer ground-glass opacities, but a higher rate of consolidation. The severity score was lower in HIV+ patients, with the lower lobes of HIV- patients more affected. The text also discusses the variability in CT manifestations in HIV patients, highlighting the importance of considering previous conditions. The study suggests that HIVrelated immunosuppression may paradoxically protect against severe COVID-19 manifestation, but low CD4 counts (<200 cells/ µL) can predispose patients to more severe forms of the disease. However, the study acknowledges limitations, such as a small sample size and the need for follow-up CT examinations to understand the complete disease course.

Computed tomography findings in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes at an infectious disease hospital in China: a retrospective cross-sectional study

BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the relationship between active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by analysing the clinical features and computed tomography (CT) findings of patients with active pulmonary TB and comorbid T2DM (TB-DM) in the LiangShan Yi regions.MethodsWe collected data from 154 hospitalised patients with TB-DM initially confirmed at an infectious disease hospital in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture between 1 and 2019, and 31 December 2021. These were matched by sex and age ± 3 years to 145 hospitalised patients with initially confirmed pulmonary TB without comorbid T2DM (TB-NDM) over the same period. The clinical characteristics of the two groups were analysed separately. Three group-blinded radiologists independently analysed the CT findings and classified them into mild-to-moderate and severe groups. Severe chest CT lesion refers to a lesion that is less diffused or moderately dense and either exceeds the total volume of one lung, a high-density fused lesion greater than one-third of the volume of one lung, or a cavitary lesion with a maximum diameter ≥ 4 cm.ResultsNo significant differences were observed in the presentation of clinical features. Regarding the severity of chest CT manifestation, patients with TB-DM had significantly more severe TB than those with TB-NDM (89.61% vs. 68.97%, P < 0.0001). Regarding CT findings, patients with TB-DM had higher proportions of consolidation (79.22% vs. 52.41%, P < 0.0001), cavitary lesions (85.06% vs. 59.31%, P < 0.0001), bronchiectasis (71.43% vs. 31.03%, P < 0.0001), exudative lesions (88.96% vs. 68.28%, P < 0.0001), and fibrous lesions (93.51% vs. 68.97%, P < 0.0001) than patients with TB-NDM. In conclusion, patients with TB-DM have more severe pulmonary TB CT findings than those without. There were no significant differences in the distribution of lesions in the lung lobes between TB-DM and TB-NDM patients.ConclusionsAmong patients hospitalised with pulmonary TB, those with T2DM had more severe findings on chest CT than those without T2DM. However, the clinical presentation was not significantly different.

Could initial CT chest manifestation in patients hospitalized with COVID 19 pneumonia predict outcome on short term basis.

Chest computed tomography (CT) can be used to monitor the course of the disease or response to therapy. Therefore, our study was designed to identify chest CT manifestations that can predict the outcome of patients on short term follow-up. This was a retrospective study wherein we reviewed chest CT scans of 112 real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction positive patients admitted to our hospital. All 112 patients underwent follow-up chest CT at a time interval of 4 to 42 days. Our study included 83 male and 29 female who were positive for COVID 19 infection and admitted to the hospital with positive chest CT findings. All patients underwent follow-up chest CT, and the outcomes were categorized as resolution, regression, residual fibrosis, progression, or death. These proportions were 5.4%, 48.2%, 24.1%, 14.3%, and 8%, respectively. The only significant factor in determining the complete resolution of chest CT was oligo-segmental affection (P = .0001). The main CT feature that significantly affected the regression of chest CT manifestations was diffuse nodular shadows (P = .039). The CT features noted in patients with residual fibrosis were interstitial thickening, with a P value of .017. The mono-segmental process significantly affected progression (P = .044). The significant factors for fatality were diffuse crazy paving, pleural effusion, and extra-thoracic complications (P = .033, .029, and .007, respectively). The prognostic value of the first admission CT can help assess disease outcomes in the earliest phases of onset. This can improve resource distribution.

Tumor-associated prognostic factors extractable from chest CT scans in patients with lung cancer.

Accurately predicting the prognosis of patients with lung cancer before or at the time of treatment would offer clinicians an opportunity to tailor management plans more precisely to individual patients. Considering that chest computed tomography (CT) scans are universally acquired in patients with lung cancer for clinical staging or response evaluation, fully extracting and utilizing the prognostic information embedded in this modality would be a reasonable approach. Herein, we review tumor-related prognostic factors that are extractable from CT scans, including the tumor dimensions, presence of ground-glass opacity (GGO), margin characteristics, tumor location, and deep learning-based features. Tumor dimensions include diameter and volume, which are among the most potent prognostic factors in lung cancer. In lung adenocarcinomas, the solid component size on CT scans as well as the total tumor size is associated with the prognosis. The areas of GGO indicate the lepidic component and are associated with better postoperative survival in early-stage lung adenocarcinomas. As for the margin characteristics, which represent the CT manifestation of fibrotic stroma or desmoplasia, tumor spiculation should be evaluated. The tumor location in the central lung is associated with occult nodal metastasis and is a worse prognostic factor per se. Last but not least, deep learning analysis enables prognostic feature extraction beyond the human eyes.

Chest computed-tomography 1 day before the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019.

A 63-year-old man presented for the further examination of chest radiographic abnormality to exclude lung cancer on November 14, 2022. For annual screening of lung cancer, he had visited another division of our hospital on October 21, 2022. A nodule with irregular margins was pointed out by the low-dose chest computed-tomography (CT) (Figure 1(a)). He had flu-like symptoms with a fever of 39.0° after returning home, then he had been diagnosed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by polymerase chain reaction test on October 22, 2022. After 10 days isolation and his symptom recovery, he visited us on November 14, 2022. Chest CT performed on the same day revealed small ground-glass opacity (GGO), which seemed to be in recovery phase (Figure 1(b)). We diagnosed the series of radiological findings as the pneumonia caused by COVID-19 infection. Although bilateral GGO and consolidation were reported as the predominant imaging characteristics in COVID-19, chest CT manifestations can vary in different patients and stages.1 This case is interesting, since the radiological findings of COVID-19 might have the possibility to mimic those of lung cancer. Clinicians should be aware of this characteristic radiological manifestation especially in case of early stage and mild COVID-19. Diagnostic Efficacy of Chest Computed Tomography for Coronavirus Disease 2019.

A significant discrepancy between the results of previous studies is identified regarding the diagnostic efficacy of chest computed tomography (CT) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of chest CT for COVID-19. Suspected cases of COVID-19 with fever, cough, dyspnea, and evidence of pneumonia on chest CT scan were enrolled in the study. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of chest CT were determined according to real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results as the gold standard method. The study population comprised 356 suspected cases of COVID-19 (174 men and 182 women; age range 3-96 years; mean age ± standard deviation, 55.21 ± 18.38 years). COVID-19 patients were diagnosed using chest CT with 89.8% sensitivity, 78.1% accuracy, 21.3% specificity, 84.7% positive predictive value, and 30.23% negative predictive value. The odds ratio was 2.39 (95% confidence interval, 1.16-4.91). Typical CT manifestations of COVID-19 were observed in 48 (13.5%) patients with negative RT-PCR results and 30 (8.4%) patients with confirmed positive RT-PCR results had no radiological manifestations. Kappa coefficient of chest CT for diagnosis of COVID-19 was 0.78. The results show that when RT-PCR results are negative, chest CT could be considered as a complementary diagnostic method for the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. A more comprehensive diagnostic method could be established by combining the chest CT examination, clinical symptoms, and RT-PCR assay.

Pulmonary Sequelae in Patients After Recovery From Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Follow-Up Study With Chest CT.

Objective: The pulmonary sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have not been comprehensively evaluated. We performed a follow-up study analyzing chest computed tomography (CT) findings of COVID-19 patients at 3 and 6 months after hospital discharge.Methods: Between February 2020 and May 2020, a total of 273 patients with COVID-19 at the Shenzhen Third People's Hospital were recruited and followed for 6 months after discharge. Chest CT scanning was performed with the patient in the supine position at end-inspiration. A total of 957 chest CT scans was obtained at different timepoints. A semi-quantitative score was used to assess the degree of lung involvement.Results: Most chest CT scans showed bilateral lung involvement with peripheral location at 3 and 6 months follow-up. The most common CT findings were ground-glass opacity and parenchymal band, which were found in 136 (55.3%) and 94 (38.2%) of the 246 patients at 3 months follow-up, and 82 (48.2%) and 76 (44.7%) of 170 patients at 6 months follow-up, respectively. The number of lobes involved and the total CT severity score declined over time. The total CT score gradually increased with the increasement of disease severity at both 3 months follow-up (trend test P < 0.001) and 6 months follow-up (trend test P < 0.001). Patients with different disease severity represented diverse CT patterns over time.Conclusions: The most common CT findings were ground-glass opacity and parenchymal bands at the 3 and 6 months follow-up. Patients with different disease severity represent diverse CT manifestations, indicating the necessary for long-term follow-up monitoring of patients with severe and critical conditions.

Clinical characteristics of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome having respiratory symptoms as the initial manifestations: A retrospective study

The aim of the study was to investigate clinical features of patients with AIDS having respiratory symptoms as initial manifestations and help in the early diagnosis. Eighty-eight patients admitted to the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital were included in the study. General data, clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, chest computed tomography (CT) imaging features, treatments, and prognosis were analyzed. Peripheral leukopenia, lymphopenia, hypoxemia, and reduced percentage of CD4+ T lymphocytes were found in 25.6%, 43.6%, 27.5%, and 94.9% of the patients, respectively. Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) was the most frequent cause of opportunistic pulmonary infection. Patients with PCP had more bilateral lung involvement and ground-glass shadow in CT manifestations. A follow-up of the 43 patients transferred to the Public Health Center showed improvement in 27 (62.8%), stabilization in 4 (9.3%), worsening in 1 (2.3%), and death in 11 (25.6%) patients. Detailed medical history recording, screening of human immunodeficiency virus antibody, and flow cytometry would improve the diagnostic efficiency of AIDS in patients with diffuse ground-glass shadow in chest CT. Early and empirical treatment could improve the prognosis.

Characterization of Clinical and CT Manifestations of Pulmonary Cryptococcosis with Consolidation.

Considering the insufficient understanding of pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) with consolidation, 22 patients were evaluated based on the chest computed tomography (CT) images and clinical manifestation. The clinical symptoms were mild, mainly manifesting as cough and sputum. Pulmonary lesions mostly involved a single lobe in a single lung with multiple lesions. Specifically, single lung involvement was observed in 17 cases, single lobe in 16 cases and multiple lesions in 14 case. Fifteen cases were mainly distributed in the periphery and 17 cases in the long axis in parallel to the pleura. Nineteen cases had air bronchograms. Eight cases displayed cavitation inside the lesions and 18 cases had surrounding halo signs. Seventeen cases had pleural thickening, of which 10 cases had "pasting wall" signs. The clinical symptoms of PC with consolidation were relatively mild. Comprehensive clinical and imaging performance could improve the diagnosis of the disease.

Chest computed tomography findings of COVID-19 in children younger than 1 year: a systematic review.

BackgroundThe aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the chest computed tomography (CT) findings in infants with confirmed COVID-19 infection by providing a comprehensive review of the existing literature.Data sourcesA systematic search was conducted on PubMed and Embase from the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak to October 20, 2020, for studies that discussed the chest CT findings in infants younger than 1 year with COVID-19 infection.ResultsA total of 35 studies comprising 70 COVID-19 (58.5% boys) confirmed infants were included. The mean age of the included patients was 4.1 months with a range of 1 day to 12 months. Chest CT scans showed bilateral abnormalities in 34 patients, and unilateral lung involvement in 25 patients. Ground-glass opacities (GGO) (71.43%) were found to be the most prevalent chest CT manifestation, followed by peribronchial thickening (60%), linear or band-shaped opacities (32.8%), consolidation (28.57%), nodule (18.57%), effusion (7.14%) and focal lucency (7.14%).ConclusionsGGO and peribronchial thickening were the most prevalent findings in the infants’ chest CT scans. Linear or band-shaped opacities, consolidation, and pulmonary nodules are more common in infants than in adults. These findings suggest that the disease is more likely to be presented as an atypical pneumonia (peribronchial thickening and linear or band-shaped opacities) in this age group. Chest CT Images for COVID-19: Radiologists and Computer-Based Detection.

BackgroundCharacteristic chest computed tomography (CT) manifestation of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was added as a diagnostic criterion in the Chinese National COVID-19 management guideline. Whether the characteristic findings of Chest CT could differentiate confirmed COVID-19 cases from other positive nucleic acid test (NAT)-negative patients has not been rigorously evaluated.PurposeWe aim to test whether chest CT manifestation of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can be differentiated by a radiologist or a computer-based CT image analysis system.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective case-control study that included 52 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients and 80 non-COVID-19 viral pneumonia patients between 20 December, 2019 and 10 February, 2020. The chest CT images were evaluated by radiologists in a double blind fashion. A computer-based image analysis system (uAI System, Lianying Inc., Shanghai, China) detected the lesions in 18 lung segments defined by Boyden classification system and calculated the infected volume in each segment. The number and volume of lesions detected by radiologist and computer system was compared with Chi-square test or Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate.ResultsThe main CT manifestations of COVID-19 were multi-lobar/segmental peripheral ground-glass opacities and patchy air space infiltrates. The case and control groups were similar in demographics, comorbidity, and clinical manifestations. There was no significant difference in eight radiologist identified CT image features between the two groups of patients. There was also no difference in the absolute and relative volume of infected regions in each lung segment.ConclusionWe documented the non-differentiating nature of initial chest CT image between COVID-19 and other viral pneumonia with suspected symptoms. Our results do not support CT findings replacing microbiological diagnosis as a critical criterion for COVID-19 diagnosis. Our findings may prompt re-evaluation of isolated patients without laboratory confirmation.

CT findings and dynamic imaging changes of COVID-19 in 2908 patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Quick screening patients with COVID-19 is the most important way of controlling transmission by isolation and medical treatment. Chest computed tomography (CT) has been widely used during the initial screening process, including pneumonia diagnosis, severity assessment, and differential diagnosis of COVID-19. The course of COVID-19 changes rapidly. Serial CT imaging could observe the distribution, density, and range of lesions dynamically, monitor the changes, and then guide towards appropriate treatment. The aim of the review was to explore the chest CT findings and dynamic CT changes of COVID-19 using systematic evaluation methods, instructing the clinical imaging diagnosis. A systematic literature search was performed. The quality of included literature was evaluated with a quality assessment tool, followed by data extraction and meta-analysis. Homogeneity and publishing bias were analyzed. A total of 109 articles were included, involving 2908 adults with COVID-19. The lesions often occurred in bilateral lungs (74%) and were multifocal (77%) with subpleural distribution (81%). Lesions often showed ground-glass opacity (GGO) (68%), followed by GGO with consolidation (48%). The thickening of small vessels (70%) and thickening of intralobular septum (53%) were also common. The dynamic changes of chest CT manifestations showed that lesions were absorbed and improved gradually after reaching the peak (80%), had progressive deterioration (55%), were absorbed and improved gradually (46%), fluctuated (22%), or remained stable (26%). The review showed the common and key CT features and the dynamic imaging change patterns of COVID-19, helping with timely management during COVID-19 pandemic.

Glycemic status affects the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 in patients with diabetes mellitus: an observational study of CT radiological manifestations using an artificial intelligence algorithm

AimsIncreasing evidence suggests that poor glycemic control in diabetic individuals is associated with poor coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia outcomes and influences chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations. This study aimed to explore the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) and glycemic control on chest CT manifestations, acquired using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based quantitative evaluation system, and COVID-19 disease severity and to investigate the association between CT lesions and clinical outcome.MethodsA total of 126 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in this retrospective study. According to their clinical history of DM and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, the patients were divided into 3 groups: the non-DM group (Group 1); the well-controlled blood glucose (BG) group, with HbA1c < 7% (Group 2); and the poorly controlled BG group, with HbA1c ≥ 7% (Group 3). The chest CT images were analyzed with an AI-based quantitative evaluation system. Three main quantitative CT features representing the percentage of total lung lesion volume (PLV), percentage of ground-glass opacity volume (PGV) and percentage of consolidation volume (PCV) in bilateral lung fields were used to evaluate the severity of pneumonia lesions.ResultsPatients in Group 3 had the highest percentage of severe or critical illness, with 12 (32%) cases, followed by 6 (11%) and 7 (23%) cases in Groups 1 and 2, respectively (p = 0.042). The composite endpoints, including death or using mechanical ventilation or admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), were 3 (5%), 5 (16%) and 10 (26%) in Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively (p = 0.013). The PLV, PGV and PCV in bilateral lung fields were significantly different among the three groups (all p < 0.001): the median PLVs were 12.5% (Group 3), 3.8% (Group 2) and 2.4% (Group 1); the median PGVs were 10.2% (Group 3), 3.6% (Group 2) and 1.9% (Group 1); and the median PCVs were 1.8% (Group 3), 0.3% (Group 2) and 0.1% (Group 1). In the linear regression analyses, which were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and comorbidities, HbA1c remained positively associated with PLV (β = 0.401, p < 0.001), PGV (β = 0.364, p = 0.001) and PCV (β = 0.472, p < 0.001); this relationship was also observed between fasting blood glucose (FBG) and the three CT quantitative parameters. In the logistic regression analyses, PLV [OR 1.067 (1.032, 1.103)], PGV [OR 1.076 (1.034, 1.120)] and PCV [OR 1.280 (1.110, 1.476)] levels were independent predictors of the composite endpoints, as well as the areas under the ROC (AUCs) for PLV [AUC 0.796 (0.691, 0.900)], PGV [AUC 0.783 (0.678, 0.889)] and PCV [AUC 0.816 (0.722, 0.911)]; the ORs were still significant for CT lesions after adjusting for age, sex and poorly controlled diabetes.ConclusionsIncreased blood glucose level was correlated with the severity of lung involvement, as evidenced by certain chest CT parameters, and clinical prognosis in diabetic COVID-19 patients. There was a positive correlation between blood glucose level (both HbA1c and FBG) on admission and lung lesions. Moreover, the CT lesion severity by AI quantitative analysis was correlated with clinical outcomes.

Spectrum of chest CT manifestations of coronavirus disease (COVID-19): A pictorial essay.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family of betacoronaviruses. Chest computed tomography (CT) has helped us in understanding this new disease. Typical CT features of COVID-19 pneumonia are ground-glass opacities (GGO), crazy paving pattern and GGO with superimposed consolidation with a basal, posterior and peripheral lung predilection. Less commonly bronchial wall thickening, bronchial dilatation and pleural thickening are seen. Presence of pleural effusion, pericardial effusion and mediastinal lymphadenopathy is seen in severe cases. Reticulations, fibrous stripes, reverse halo sign and perilobular opacities are seen late (>2 weeks) in the course of illness. We aim to present a pictorial review of CT imaging findings in COVID-19 to illustrate the typical and atypical manifestations of this disease in a bid to familiarize radiologists with the myriad imaging manifestations of this disease.

The evolution of chest CT findings from admission to follow-up in 30 moderate to severe adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

ObjectiveTo analyze the evolution of chest computed tomography (CT) findings from admission to follow-up in moderate to severe patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pneumonia.MethodsDuring December 2019–April 2020, the sequential CT images of 30 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were retrospectively analyzed from admission to follow-up. The qualitative evolution tendency of lung abnormalities and semi-quantitative CT scores were analyzed for temporal change.ResultsThe mean hospitalized period was 24.5 ± 9.6 days (range 6–49 days). The average time from the first, second, third, fourth and follow-up CT examination to the initial symptom onset were 4.2 ± 3.1 days, 10.7 ± 4.4 days, 17.1 ± 3.9 days, 24.6 ± 7.5 days, and 42.4 ± 15.6 days, respectively. During illness day 0–5, groundglass opacity (GGO) was the main pattern. The following illness day 6–11, the main CT pattern was consolidation and reticular pattern. The consolidation and reticular pattern gradually dissipate during illness day 12–23, and the reticular pattern and light GGO increased. When illness day was ≥ 24 days, the reticular pattern and light GGO gradually decrease until complete dissipation. The highest CT score was at illness day 6–11. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the mean and maximum CT score were not correlated with the length of fever (r = 0.018, p = 0.923 and r = 0.086, p = 0.652) and hospitalization (r = 0.192, p = 0.31 and r = 0.273, p = 0.144).ConclusionsThe dynamic evolution of CT manifestation in moderate to severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients followed a specific pattern over time. Meta-analysis of chest CT features of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

The objective of this paper is to perform a meta‐analysis regarding the chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations of coronavirus disease‐2019 (COVID‐19) pneumonia patients. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from 1 December 2019 to 1 May 2020 using the keywords of “COVID‐19 virus,” “the 2019 novel coronavirus,” “novel coronavirus,” and “COVID‐19.” Studies that evaluated the CT manifestations of common and severe COVID‐19 pneumonia were included. Among the 9736 searched results, 15 articles describing 1453 common patients and 697 severe patients met the inclusion criteria. Based on the CT images, the common patients were less frequent to exhibit consolidation (odds ratio [OR] = 0.31), pleural effusion (OR = 0.19), lymphadenopathy (OR = 0.17), crazy‐paving pattern (OR = 0.22), interlobular septal thickening (OR = 0.27), reticulation (OR = 0.20), traction bronchiectasis (OR = 0.40) with over two lobes involved (OR = 0.07) and central distribution (OR = 0.18) while more frequent to bear unilateral pneumonia (OR = 4.65) involving one lobe (OR = 13.84) or two lobes (OR = 6.95) when compared with severe patients. Other CT features including ground‐glass opacities (P = .404), air bronchogram (P = .070), nodule (P = .093), bronchial wall thickening (P = .15), subpleural band (P = .983), vascular enlargement (P = .207), and peripheral distribution (P = .668) did not have a significant association with the severity of the disease. No publication bias among the selected studies was suggested (Harbord's tests, P > .05 for all.) We obtained reliable estimates of the chest CT manifestations of COVID‐19 pneumonia patients, which might provide an important clue for the diagnosis and classification of COVID‐19 pneumonia.

Chest CT Imaging Spectrum of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pneumonia: A Pictorial Essay

: Various manifestations may appear in chest computed tomography (CT) scan of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this pictorial review, we present chest CT manifestations of 14 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 disease and various manifestations including ground-glass and consolidative opacities, reticular opacities, halo sign, and other findings.

Chest CT manifestations of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a pictorial review.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, first reported in Wuhan, China, has rapidly swept around the world just within a month, causing global public health emergency. In diagnosis, chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations can supplement parts of limitations of real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. Based on a comprehensive literature review and the experience in the frontline, we aim to review the typical and relatively atypical CT manifestations with representative COVID-19 cases at our hospital, and hope to strengthen the recognition of these features with radiologists and help them make a quick and accurate diagnosis.Key Points • Ground glass opacities, consolidation, reticular pattern, and crazy paving pattern are typical CT manifestations of COVID-19. • Emerging atypical CT manifestations, including airway changes, pleural changes, fibrosis, nodules, etc., were demonstrated in COVID-19 patients. • CT manifestations may associate with the progression and prognosis of COVID-19.
