Assessment of taste alteration and its correlation with nutritional status and quality of life among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

BackgroundChemotherapy is the most commonly utilized therapeutic strategy among the numerous cancer treatments. These chemotherapeutic agents have a variety of adverse reactions, one of which is taste alteration (TA), which substantially influences the patients nutritional status and quality of life (QoL). ObjectiveThe study aims to assess TAs, associated factors, and the nutritional status and QoL of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. MethodsAn observational cross-sectional study was carried out for 6 months, among cancer patients diagnosed with TA. Data was collected using a chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS). Demographic details of the patients, factors associated with TA, details regarding chemotherapeutic agent used, number of current chemotherapy cycles etc, were recorded using a self-designed data collection form. Nutritional status and QoL on cancer patients were collected using Mini nutritional assessment – short form (MNA-SF) and EuroQol 5 dimension 5 levels (EQ5D5L), respectively, and statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software version 29 was used for the analysis of data. ResultsA significant association was observed between TA and QoL. There was also a significant association between TA and predisposing factors such as nausea and dry mouth, which was obtained from the Chi-square test. Male patients were found to have higher TA than female patients. TA has also affected various aspects of QoL, such as mobility, pain, and discomfort. Patients experiencing mouth dryness or xerostomia had higher TA than others. A negative association was seen between TAs and nutritional status. ConclusionThis study shows a significant relationship between gender and TA, dry mouth, nausea, and TA. Several QoL factors like mobility, pain/discomfort, and TA were also observed. Despite this study not observing any statistical association between nutritional status and TA, clinically, most of the patients with higher TA were malnourished. This study concluded that there was a relationship between TA and QoL and that nausea and dry mouth are the predisposing factors for TA.

Taste alteration and its relationship with nutritional status among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, cross-sectional study

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of taste alterations (TAs) during chemotherapy and their association with nutritional status and malnutrition. In addition to the associated factors with TA, including sociodemographic health-related factors and clinical status, and to investigate coping strategies to manage TA. A multicenter cross-sectional design study was conducted on 120 cancer patients aged at least 18 who had been undergoing at least one round of chemotherapy. TAs were evaluated using the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS), the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) was used for nutritional screening, the antineoplastic side effects scale (ASES) was used for subjective assessment of chemotherapy side effects, and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used for comorbidity assessment. SPSS21 software was used to analyze the data, and the independent T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to determine the association between TAs and a variety of related variables. The prevalence of TAs was 98.3%. Among participants, 48.3% were at low risk of malnutrition, 20% at medium risk, and 31.7% at high risk. Malnutrition risk was associated with taste disorders (p<0.05). Patients’ age, gender, educational level, and physical status were associated with TAs (p<0.05). Type of cancer, chemotherapy regimen, and number of chemotherapy cycles were also associated with TAs (p<0.05). A variety of antineoplastic side effects were associated with TAs (p<0.05), including nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, sore mouth and throat, excessive thirst, swallowing difficulty, appetite changes, weight loss, dizziness, lack of energy, disturbed sleep, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. TAs were associated with an increased number of comorbidities, and individuals with diabetes, pulmonary diseases, and hypertension were associated with TAs (P<0.05). Patients in this study rarely practice self-management strategies to cope with TAs. A high prevalence (98.3%) of TAs in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was found, and it was linked to a variety of negative outcomes. Chemotherapy-induced TAs are an underestimated side effect that requires more attention from patients and health care providers.

A taste alteration-related scale assesses megestrol to improve chemotherapy-induced anorexia.

We evaluated the efficacy of megestrol in improving chemotherapy-related anorexia by analyzing the related scales of taste alteration. We conducted the current study on a group of advanced patients with cancer with two or more chemotherapy cycles. The chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAs) scale helped assess the megestrol effects on basic taste perception, aversive taste changes, unpleasant symptoms, and associated concerns. Furthermore, the Short Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire scale (SNAQ) helped measure the impact of megestrol on malnutrition likelihood in patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced anorexia. The World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-BREF Scale was used to evaluate the quality of life of participants, producing scores related to physical health, psychological well-being, environmental factors, and social relationships. The CiTAs scale assessment indicated that administering megestrol significantly enhanced taste perception among advanced patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Notably, the megestrol group patients showed significantly higher Short Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (SNAQ) scores than the control group. The megestrol group patients also exhibited higher physiological (PHYS) scores than their control group counterparts. However, this distinction was not statistically significant. The study findings indicate that patients who received megestrol demonstrated significantly higher scores in psychological (PSYCH) and environmental(ENVIR) domains than the control group. Furthermore, megestrol administration was associated with significantly elevated SOCIL and ENVIR levels in patients. The proficient efficacy evaluation of megestrol in enhancing appetite, mitigating malnutrition likelihood, and improving the quality of life of chemotherapy-induced anorexic patients can be achieved through taste-related scales.

Dysgeusia in patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma receiving enfortumab vedotin, platinum-based chemotherapy, or immune check point inhibitors: time-course assessment using chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale

A time-course questionnaire survey using the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS) was conducted in patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) treated with systemic chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy. A total of 37 patients receiving systemic therapy with enfortumab vedotin (EV), platinum-based chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors were included in this study. No significant changes were observed in any of the CiTAS subscales during platinum-based chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment, while EV therapy induced significant dysgeusia. Among 10 patients treated with EV, dysgeusia was associated with a substantial negative effect on the health-related quality-of-life domains, particularly global health status/QOL (mean ± standard deviation: 52 ± 19 in dysgeusia group vs 89 ± 13 in non-dysgeusia group) and mental component summary (47 ± 5.1 vs 53 ± 2.0). The fatigue symptom score was higher in the dysgeusia group at the post-third cycle of EV (47 ± 16 vs 15 ± 17). Severe dysgeusia can be induced by EV therapy, which is usually not observed in other systemic therapies for advanced UC.

Evaluating the efficacy of auricular acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced taste alterations: A pilot randomized controlled trial

PurposeIrrespective of the development of acupuncture-based interventions, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy remains controversial owing to issues with the study design and an unclear risk of bias. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of auricular acupuncture in managing taste alterations in patients with cancer undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. MethodsWe conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial involving 73 patients randomly assigned to an auricular acupuncture or a control group. The primary outcome was the severity of chemotherapy-induced taste alterations, and the secondary outcomes included quality of life and negative emotions of the patients. ResultsA total of 49 participants completed the study. Compared to the control group, patients in the auricular acupuncture group showed significant reductions in discomfort, general taste alterations, and total scores on the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed significant improvements in quality of life, including physical function (p = 0.007), role function (p = 0.006), emotional function (p = 0.016), nausea and vomiting (p = 0.021), appetite loss (p = 0.046), and significant improvements in anxiety and depression (p < 0.01). ConclusionsOur findings suggest that auricular acupuncture may be a beneficial intervention for managing chemotherapy-induced taste alterations in patients with cancer receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. It may also contribute to improvements in quality of life and negative emotions. However, these results are preliminary, and further evaluation with larger randomized controlled trials is necessary.

Patient-reported outcomes of taste alterations and quality of life in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

To investigate patient-reported outcomes of taste alterations and quality of life (QoL) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this single-center retrospective study medical records of 191 patients with NPC undergoing chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in the Department of Radiotherapy, Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from January 2021 to December 2021 were reviewed. A total of 120 patients met eligibility criteria and were included. The taste alterations and QoL at multiple time points during radiotherapy (RT) were compared. There were significant differences in the intensity of taste, discomfort, phantogeusia and parageusia or overall taste alterations at multiple time points during CRT (p-Value<0.001). These four parameters were significantly higher two or four weeks after CRT, or at the end of CRT compared to before CRT (p-Value <0.001). The intensity of taste, discomfort, phantogeusia and parageusia or overall taste alterations were all significantly higher four weeks after CRT compared to two weeks after CRT (p-Value <0.001), and at the end of CRT compared to four weeks after CRT (p-Value <0.001). The chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS) scores were highest at the end of CRT (p-Value <0.001). There were significant differences in QoL at multiple time points during CRT (p-Value <0.001), and each parameter differed significantly at various time points (p <0.05). The QoL of all areas at the end of CRT were significantly higher than those before CRT, or two or four weeks after CRT (p-Value <0.001). In patients with NPC undergoing CRT, taste alterations increasingly worsen as treatment progresses, with poor QoL outcomes.

Impact of radiation dose on patient-reported acute taste alteration in a prospective observational study cohort in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC)

PurposeTaste alteration (TA) is a frequent acute side effect of radiation treatment in HNSCC patients. Principal aim of our study was to investigate dosimetric parameters in relation to patient-assessed taste impairment in a prospective cohort treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy.MethodsAll patients with locally advanced HNSCC and amenable to radical treatment were included. Chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CITAS), EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-HN43 questionnaires at baseline (T0), 3 weeks (T1) and 3 months (T2) after radiotherapy conclusion were used to assess taste impairment. Base of tongue, submandibular glands (SG), parotid glands (PG) and taste buds, along with anterior and medium third of the tongue, were considered as organs at risk and thus delineated according to consensus guidelines. The mean dose to the above-mentioned structures was correlated with patient-reported outcomes.ResultsBetween September 2019 and November 2020, 33 patients were recruited, 31 of which analyzed. 71% had oropharyngeal carcinoma, mostly HPV-related (60%). All were treated with tomotherapy. 77.4% had concurrent cisplatin. Mean scores of general taste alterations, global health status and dry mouth and sticky saliva were assessed. The mean doses to the anterior third, medium third and base of the tongue were 23.85, 35.50 and 47.67 Gy, respectively. Taste buds received 32.72 Gy; right and left parotid 25 and 23 Gy; right and left submandibular glands 47.8 and 39.4 Gy. At univariate analysis, dysgeusia correlated with SG mean dose (95% CI 0–0.02 p = 0.05) and PG mean dose (95% CI 0–0.02 p = 0.05); dry mouth with mean dose to anterior (95% CI 0.03–1.47 p = 0.04) and medium third (95% CI 0.02–0.93 p = 0.04) of the tongue, to taste buds (95% CI 0.06–0.96 p = 0.03) and to SGs (95% CI 0.06–0.63 p = 0.02); pain mouth with mean dose to taste buds (95% CI 0–0.02 p = 0.04), to SGs (95% CI 0–0.03 p = 0.03) and to base tongue (95% CI 0–0.02 p = 0.02).ConclusionsOur analysis supports the influence of dose distribution on the development of TA in HNSCC patients. The contribution of dose to taste buds and tongue subvolumes remains unclear and worthy of further investigation.

TASTE EVALUATION OF SUBJECTS USING HIV PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PrEP)

Objective To evaluate the taste of the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) users over a 130-day follow-up. Study Design An observational and prospective study was performed. Taste was assessed by the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS). The higher the value obtained, the greater the taste change. Subjects were evaluated before beginning the medication (T0), at the first follow-up (T1), and at the second follow-up (T2). Results Forty-seven participants (41 men; 6 women) were evaluated at T0. Thirty (28 men; 2 women) and 17 men were reassessed at T1 and T2, respectively. The values of the basic taste dimension (T0=1.04±0.29; T1=1.16±0.64; T2=1.11±0.48); discomfort dimension (T0=1.54±0.55; T1=1.62±0.91; T2=1.37±0.41); false taste dimension (T0=1.03±0.15; T1=1.08±0.31; T2=1.05±0.24), and final CiTAS (T0=4.78±0.86; T1=5.14±1.78, T2=4.59±0.68) indicated a worsening of taste at interval I (n=30), which refers to the days elapsed from T0 to T1, with a mean of 34.24 (±2.87; 25-108) days. Interval II (n=17) refers to the days elapsed from T1 to T2, with a mean of 99.56 (±3.68; 80-126) days. Conclusion There was a worsening of the self-perception of taste after 34 days of the initial use of PrEP, and after about 100 days, it was similar to the stage before the use of medication. Evaluation of Chemotherapy-induced Dysgeusia in Patients With Gastrointestinal Cancer: A Pilot Study.

Dysgeusia, one of the adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy, and anorexia due to taste disorder can significantly impair the quality of life of patients. However, an evaluation method for dysgeusia has not yet been established. The present prospective study aimed to utilize a combination of subjective and objective assessment methods to evaluate dysgeusia in patients with gastrointestinal cancer initiating chemotherapy, to determine chemotherapeutic drugs and regimens causing dysgeusia, and to assess whether dysgeusia was associated with zinc deficiency. A total of 21 patients with newly diagnosed gastrointestinal cancer were registered between August 2020 to March 2021. The following regimens were also included in the evaluation if the patients did not develop dysgeusia. A total 30 regimens were administered to the patients during the study period. A salt-impregnated test paper (Salsave®) was used as a subjective assessment, and the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale was used as an objective assessment. Based on physician interviews, dysgeusia was diagnosed in 8 of 21 patients (38%) treated with 8 of 30 regimens (27%). All regimens that resulted in dysgeusia contained platinum-based drugs. The patients who developed dysgeusia had higher controlling nutritional status scores at the start of chemotherapy compared to those who did not develop dysgeusia. In both subjective and objective assessments, the patients with dysgeusia performed significantly worse than those without dysgeusia. Six of the eight patients who developed dysgeusia were administered Novelzine, which did not improve the taste disorder despite the improvement of serum zinc levels. The combined approach using subjective and objective taste assessment methods was useful in assessing chemotherapy-induced dysgeusia. Mechanisms other than hypozincemia should be considered as contributors to taste disorders caused by platinum-based drugs.

Taste alterations during neo/adjuvant chemotherapy and subsequent follow-up in breast cancer patients: a prospective single-center clinical study.

Dysgeusia and taste alterations (TAs) are side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy and affect patients' quality of life; however, the prevalence, types, and duration of TAs and their potential relationship with other clinical disturbances are not well-described. Our primary aim was to prospectively evaluate the characteristics of TAs in early breast cancer (EBC) patients during (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy and up to 1year after its completion. From April 2014 to June 2018, 182 EBC patients entered the study and received (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy, mostly with taxane and anthracycline-containing regimens (65% of cases). A dietitian performed TAs assessment through the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Event v4.0 (CTCAE) and the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) questionnaire during chemotherapy and follow-up according to defined time points: at baseline (T0, before starting chemotherapy); at the first follow-up visit, (T1, 2months after starting chemotherapy); at the final follow-up visit (T2, 1week after completing chemotherapy); after that, every 3months up to 12months. Dysgeusia was reported by 69.8% of patients at T1 and declined subsequently; salty flavor distortion was the most frequently reported TA (51.6% of cases). CiTAS was significantly different between T0 and T2 (p < 0.001). Dysgeusia occurred more frequently in patients reporting nausea, mucositis, diarrhea, and appetite modification. TAs are common but transient during chemotherapy and occurred frequently with other distressing gastrointestinal side effects. The assessment of these side effects is crucial in managing EBC patients during (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy.

Occurrence of Dysgeusia in Patients Being Treated for Cancer

The aims of this study were to assess the presence of dysgeusia in patients receiving anticancer therapy and to explore possible factors influencing its occurrence. A total of 242 adult patients with histological diagnoses of malignant neoplasia and undergoing all types of anticancer treatment were included in the analysis. Data were collected from May 2019 to November 2019 at the Unit of Medical Oncology of Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy. Dysgeusia was assessed using the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS), while treatment-related symptoms were assessed using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Patients were aged 68 ± 13 years, mostly males (65%). A large proportion of them was undergoing chemotherapy (42.2%), while the others were receiving immunotherapy (20.7%), hormone therapy (15.5%), targeted therapy (12.8%), or a combination of them. Overall, 21.5% of patients reported dysgeusia, 17.4% nausea, 10.7% dysosmia, 9.9% xerostomia, 4.5% mucositis, and only 3.7% vomiting. The targeted therapy showed the greatest adverse effects, followed by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. When patients with dysgeusia were analyzed, phantogeusia and parageusia was the most affected dimension of gustatory disorders. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in CiTAS scores were found according to treatment-related symptoms for nausea and mucositis.

HGCSG1902: Multicenter, prospective, observational study for patients with dysgeusia caused by chemotherapy for gastrointestinal cancer.

649 Background: Dysgeusia is the one of important adverse events in patients treated with chemotherapy because it could reduce daily oral intake and worsen patient’s nutritional status. It is said that the lack of zinc is often observed in patients with chemotherapy because taste buds cells injured by chemotherapy require large amounts of zinc for their regeneration and cytotoxic agents have the possibility of working as a chelator for zinc. Some retrospective studies showed that zinc administration may improve dysgeusia in patients treated with chemotherapy, however, there is no prospective study. Therefore, we planned this study to clarify the effect of zinc therapy on dysgeusia in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods: This was a multicenter, prospective observational study. From February 2020 to June 2021, patients with dysgeusia during chemotherapy for gastrointestinal cancer were enrolled from 17 institutes in Japan. The investigator selected one of the following treatment: no intervention (N), polaprezinc administration (P: contains 34.1mg of zinc par daily normal dose), or zinc acetate hydrate administration (Z: contains 50-100mg of zinc par daily normal dose). Serum zinc levels were measured at baseline, after 6 and 12 weeks, respectively. Dysgeusia was assessed by questionnaires according to four criteria, CTCAE v5.0, Subjective Total Taste Acuity (STTA), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) at the time of enrollment and after 12 weeks. Results: A total of 180 patients, 60 in each group, were enrolled in the study. The mean serum zinc levels in each group at baseline were similar (67.3, 66.6, and 67.5μg/dl in N, P, Z group, respectively) and lower than lower limit of normal. The mean alterations of serum zinc level from baseline to after 12 weeks were -3.8, +14.3, and +46.6μg/dl in N, P, Z group, respectively. The STTA score was significantly improved in the P group compared to the N group at 12 weeks (p = 0.045), whereas it was not improved in the Z group (p = 0.945). The association between the alteration values of serum zinc level and improvement of dysgeusia was not observed. Conclusions: In this study, administration of polarezinc or zinc acetate hydrate increased serum zinc levels, but there was no significant correlation between the degree of serum zinc elevation and the improvement of dysgeusia. The STTA score was improved only in P group, thus our results suggest there are any factors for improvement of dysgeusia by polaprezinc administration other than serum zinc levels. The Relationship between Malnutrition and Subjective Taste Change Experienced by Patients with Cancer Receiving Outpatient Chemotherapy Treatment

Taste changes and malnutrition are two important problems in patients with different types of cancer. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between malnutrition and subjective taste changes experienced by cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy. The study used a cross-sectional design and was carried out with 1382 patients with cancer receiving outpatient chemotherapy. Of the patients, 63.1% experienced taste changes. It was determined that 8.8% of patients had malnutrition according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment. The mean scores of patients experiencing malnutrition and being at risk for malnutrition from all sub-dimensions of The Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) were found to be higher than the patient group evaluated to have normal nutrition. It was determined that a unit increase in the scores of the parageusia and phantogeusia subscales of the CiTAS increased the risk of malnutrition by 3.36 times (%95 CI= 2.68–4.02). In line with these results, we recommend that patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy should be routinely evaluated in terms of taste changes in clinical practice and that they should be followed up in terms of malnutrition in the presence of taste changes.

Taste alterations and oral discomfort in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Taste alterations (TA) and oral discomfort in cancer patients are neglected side effects of the disease and treatments. They contribute to poor appetite, decrease food intake and affect quality of life, leading to adverse outcomes such as malnutrition and depression. The study aimed to explore TAs in relation to other oral conditions causing discomfort in cancer patients. Additionally, the correlation between patients' acidity of saliva and experienced TAs and oral discomfort was evaluated. A case study including 100 patients diagnosed with cancer receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Data were collected using two questionnaire forms: the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) and an additional information questionnaire. Saliva samples were collected for each patient and measured with a pocket pH meter. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and comparisons were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test. The prevalence of reported TAs was 93%. Patient age, oral discomfort and swallowing difficulty were found to be significant factors for experienced TAs (p < 0.05). No correlation between patients' acidity of saliva and reported TAs and oral discomfort was found. CiTAS proved to be a convenient tool to collect information about TAs in cancer patients. Using the CiTAS tool, a high prevalence (93%) of reported TAs in cancer patients receiving chemo- or immunotherapy was found. CiTAS provides a fast and cheap recognition of symptoms and causes of TAs that can be addressed.

A Correlational Study on Taste Alterations and Quality of Life Among Cancer Patients

Chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy are the treatment regimen for cancer. Prolonged use of chemotherapy drugs can cause different side effects such as alopecia, weight loss, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, and the most important one is taste alterations. The aim of the study is to determine the taste alterations (TAs) and quality of life (QOL) among cancer patients who have undergone three cycles of chemotherapy. Methods The approach used is descriptive survey design. The sample comprised 62 cancer patients selected by convenient sampling. The tool used was baseline proforma, University of Washington Quality of Life (UW-QOL) questionnaire version 4.1, chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS). Results The majority of the patients belonged to the age group of 41 to 50 years (37.09%) among whom 40% were females. The majority of the patients were not diagnosed with any other disease (91.9%). Around 80.6% of patients reported to have sore mouth, out of whom 45.2% maintained oral care by brushing teeth. The most commonly seen type of tumor was head and neck (37.1%) whereas the tumor type genitourinary was the least seen (3.2%). The majority of the patients had stage II cancer (53.2%) and about 62% of them did not have metastasis. There is significant association with selected demographic variables and QOL (sore mouth, oral care, and tumor type). There is also a significant association with selected demographic variable and TAs, (oral care and tumor type) and there is a negative correlation between TAs and QOL. Conclusion Identification of the severity of TA helps in providing alternative measures to improve the taste buds which may help in improving the QOL.

Longitudinal comparisons of a whole‐mouth taste test to clinician‐rated and patient‐reported outcomes of dysgeusia postradiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer and associations with oral intake

After head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment, dysgeusia may be a barrier to oral intake. In this exploratory study, we prospectively examined taste perception, clinician-rated (CRO) and patient-reported (PRO) taste changes and their effect on oral intake postradiotherapy. Twenty-eight patients were assessed at baseline, treatment weeks 2 and 4, and 1, 3, and 6months post-treatment using a whole-mouth taste test and associated CRO and subjective PRO measures. Greater taste impairment was reflected by subjective than by a whole-mouth taste test. The most significant and consistent decline occurred mid-treatment. The Chemotherapy-Induced Taste Alteration Scale (PRO) discomfort subscale correlated significantly with maintaining an oral diet, percent of oral intake, and appetite level from mid-treatment to 6months post-treatment. PRO results indicated ongoing oral intake issues. Whole-mouth taste tests may fail to fully reflect functional taste-loss. Dysgeusia prevention and treatment methods are needed to improve patient outcomes.

Association of xerostomia and taste alterations of patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy: A cause for nutritional concern.

The symptoms of xerostomia and taste alteration are adverse effects which frequently occur in patients under chemotherapy and once associated they can potentially impair their nutritional status. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of xerostomia and taste alterations in patients being treated by neoplastic chemotherapy. Fifty patients scheduled to receive neoplastic chemotherapy were followed for their first two chemotherapy cycles for solid tumors and the Chemotherapy-Induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) was adopted. Xerostomia was defined by the presence of dry mouth complaints reported by the patients and signs of hyposalivation identified during the intraoral examination. Of the 50 patients, 33 were women, mean age; 61,48±9,07 years, and 17 were men, mean age; 57,35±11,50 years. The most common tumor was located in the breast affecting 15 patients (30%). The Mann-Whitney test showed that the mean scores of CiTAS were significantly higher for those patients who reported having xerostomia when compared with those without xerostomia after the first two chemotherapy cycles. The cofounding variables such as age, smoking habits and use of antidepressants were not statistically associated with taste alterations (p>0.05). Taste alterations were worse for patients who complained of xerostomia during the first two cycles of antineoplastic chemotherapy and the association of both symptoms can potentially impair their nutritional status and quality of life.

Validation of the Chinese version of chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale among patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy.

To validate the Chinese version of the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiotherapy (RT). Patients with HNC undergoing RT were enrolled from a cancer hospital. Data were collected by face-to-face interview. Patients' subjective taste alterations (TAs) were assessed by the CiTAS. The content validity was evaluated by five experts. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis were used to assess construct validity. Convergent validity was assessed by the correlation between the CiTAS score and the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (QLQ-C30) score. A single-item subjective intensity taste alteration question and quartiles of RT duration were used to assess the discriminant validity. The reliability was assessed by the Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability. 253 patients participated this investigation and 25 patients completed twice. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the original CiTAS structure with four dimensions was not applicable to patients with HNC undergoing RT. The Chinese version of modified-CiTAS (m-CiTAS) retained 17 items (the item "bothered by the smell of food" was deleted) loading onto three factors: decline in taste, discomfort, and phantogeusia and parageusia. The m-CiTAS showed acceptable correlations with the QLQ-C30. It could effectively discriminate the intensity of subjective TAs according to the single-item question and quartiles of RT duration. The m-CiTAS showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.573-0.958) and test-retest reliability (r=0.726-0.831, P<0.05). The Chinese version of m-CiTAS is an acceptable and applicable instrument to evaluate TAs among patients with HNC undergoing RT.

CN88 - Taste changes and associated factors in patients receiving chemotherapy

BackgroundTaste changes can frequently be observed in oncological patients undergoing chemotherapy and are reported as being among the most distressing side effects, along with fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and hair loss. The prevalence of taste changes have been reported in the range of 46%–77%. The aim of this descriptive study was to evaluate taste changes experienced by cancer patients who receive chemotherapy and associated factors with taste changes. MethodsThis is a descriptive a study. The sample of the study consisted of 154 patients who received chemotherapy at Gayrettepe Florence Nightingale Hospital during the period of February 2018 to July 2018. Data were collected by using the patient İnformation form and Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS). Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman Correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. ResultsThe mean age of patients was 57,40±12,748 years, 62.3% of them were women, 43.5% of them were university graduates, 73.4% were married and 70.8% of them were employed in any job. According to CiTAS scores, the most discomfort in taste patients experienced was because of nausea, vomiting, odor disturbance and loss of appetite during the chemotherapy process. According to CiTAS score the least discomfort experienced by patients were tasting basic flavors including the taste of the sweet, salty, bitter flavors and the broth. As a result of the comparison of CiTAS score some sociodemographic and medical characteristics of patients, it was found that women experience more paraguzi and fantoguzi than men. As the age of the patients increased, the problems in taste were decreased. Patients who do not take other drugs than chemotherapy have fewer taste problems. ConclusionsIn conclusion, it is recommended to include changes in taste sensation along with other side effects in the evaluation of treatment-related processes of cancer patients, and to add practices related to management of taste changes in the care plan of the patients by taking into account the factors that may be associated with taste.
