A high selective chemosensor for detection of Al3+ based on diarylethene with a hydrazide unit

Al3+ plays an indispensable role in different physiological processes. However, excess Al3+ is destructive to health. Here, a diarylethene-based fluorescent sensor (1O) was synthesized by attaching a hydrazide group to diarylethene moiety through Schiff base structure. In acetonitrile, 1O displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity to Al3+. The fluorescence intensity increased by 70-fold and accompanied by the color of the solution changed from dark to blue with the addition of Al3+. Further, the potential response mechanism of 1O toward Al3+ was proposed and verified by 1H NMR titrations and mass spectrometry analysis, the stoichiometric ratios of the sensor with Al3+ appeared to be 1:1 with the detection limit of 0.073 μM. In addition, 1O has been successfully applied to the detection of Al3+ in real water samples, and it also has successfully designed as molecular logic circuit and test strips.

Application of real sample analysis and biosensing: Synthesis of new naphthyl derived chemosensor for detection of Al3+ ions.

A new chemosensor (NANH) based on naphthyl moiety was synthesized with good selectivity and sensitivity towards Al3+ ions via the inhibition by operating through dual mechanisms like photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The synthesized NANH was validated by various techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR and mass spectrum. While prominent fluorescent enhancement was observed from the NANH upon binding with Al3+ ions, however, other metal ions have not responded in the emission spectrum. Detection limit and association constant of NANH for Al3+ were calculated as 1.2×10-7M and 4.09×104M-1 by using fluorescence titration method. Binding ratio (1:1) of NANH with Al3+ ions were proved by Job's plot and DFT studies. Furthermore, aluminium in variety of water samples was determined, and NANH could be used for biosensing of Al3+ in living cells.

Diarylethene-based fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for the selective detection of Al3+ and CN−

A selective fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for the detection of Al3+ and CN− was constructed from diarylethene with a salicylidene Schiff base. When triggered by Al3+, the diarylethene exhibited a remarkable fluorescence color change from dark to bright green. The interaction between its open-ring and closed-ring isomer with CN− caused a notable change in its absorption spectrum with significant color change from colorless to yellow and pink to darkcyan, respectively. Additionally, its light and metal-responsive fluorescence behaviors could be applied to logic gate with the fluorescence intensity as output and combinational stimuli of light and chemical species as inputs.

A selective ‘turn-on’ fluorescent chemosensor for detection of Al3+ in aqueous medium: Experimental and theoretical studies

A Schiff-base compound, 2-((E)-1-(2-(dimethylamino)ethylimino)ethyl)phenol (HL), has been synthesized and characterized by different spectroscopic methods The chemosensor shows selective “turn–on” cyan colour fluorescence response to Al3+ ion over a wide variety of other competing metal ions such as Zn2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, Hg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Pb2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Na+ and K+. The fluorescence emission intensity at 462 nm displayed by the chemosensor, increases progressively during the addition of Al3+ ion until saturation point, with over 20 fold intensity enhancement. Additionally, the linear range for the chemosensor has been found to be 0.5 × 10−6 to 10 × 10−6 mol/L, the detection limit of the chemosensor is 4.32 × 10−6 M and the stability constant is 2.1 × 104 M−1. Similar fluorescence behaviour is also observed in a variety of solvents and solvent mixtures in the presence of Al3+. The fluorescent emission has also been detected when a sample solution of HL containing Al3+ is irradiated by UV light. UV–vis titration experiment has established that the chemosensor HL, binds to Al3+ in 2:1 ratio. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TD–DFT) calculations were performed on HL, L− and its aluminium complex which give insight into the geometric, electronic, thermodynamic and optical properties of chemosensor-Al3+ interactions.

Thiophene and diethylaminophenol-based “turn-on” fluorescence chemosensor for detection of Al3+ and F− in a near-perfect aqueous solution

A new fluorescent sensor 1, based on thiophene and diethylaminophenol moieties, has been synthesized and its binding capabilities for metal-ion and anion recognition were investigated. The sensor 1 showed ‘turn-on’ fluorescence in the presence of Al3+ and F−. The sensing behaviors of 1 with Al3+ and F− were studied by using photophysical experiments, 1H NMR titration, and ESI-mass spectrometry analysis. The detection limits for the analysis of Al3+ and F− were found to be 0.41 μM and 14.36 μM, respectively, which are below the WHO guidelines for drinking water (7.41 μM for Al3+ and 79 μM for F−). Moreover, turn-on fluorescence of 1 toward Al3+ and F− caused by intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was well explained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Importantly, 1 could be used to detect Al3+ in the living cells.

A robust fluorescent chemosensor for aluminium ion detection based on a Schiff base ligand with an azo arm and application in a molecular logic gate

A new azo based chemosensor for detection of Al3+ ion has been reported. The sensor has been well characterized using different techniques like single crystal X-ray, NMR, IR, UV etc. Detection limit of the chemosensor was found to be 6.93 nM.

A selective colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor for detection of Al3+ ion

A simple Schiff-base fluorescent receptor 1 was synthesized in an one step procedure. Receptor 1 displayed a selective colorimetric change (from light yellow to light green) and high ratiometric signals upon binding to Al3+ in EtOH solution. The association constant for 1–Al3+ in EtOH was determined as 2.08×106M−2 and the detection limit for Al3+ was determined as 5.21×10−7M. The detection limit was sufficiently low to detect submicromolar concentration of the Al3+.
