Geoenvironmental and geophysical methods applied to identify natural attenuation process on a complex hydrogeological environment contaminated by hydrocarbons

Environmental contamination found in urban areas generally has a chemical composition that favors the generation of a variety of physical, chemical and biological processes that differ from natural soil parameters. Thus, understanding natural attenuation processes in tropical environments is still a challenge, as is understanding how biogeochemical processes can influence and modify natural soil characteristics. The study aimed to apply methods that are not commonly used in investigations of contaminated areas, in order to assess the applicability of non-invasive methodology for detailed stratigraphic characterization and biogeochemical changes resulting from contamination by hydrocarbons in a complex hydrogeological environment site. To date, few studies have presented results obtained using non-invasive techniques to understand biochemical processes. The research was based on the interpretation of results obtained by high-resolution physical environment characterization techniques (such as gamma geophysical profiling and electrical conductivity surveys) and chemical analysis of groundwater. The data was interpreted to obtain a detailed characterization of the study area and evidence of the occurrence of natural attenuation of creosote contamination. The results indicated that the combination of geoenvironmental and geophysical methods is an interesting alternative for obtaining data and understanding the mineralogical and stratigraphic variation of the contaminated area. The physical parameters variations obtained by the methods suggested the presence of local geochemical alterations resulting from natural processes of attenuation of contamination by aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in a tropical environment. The natural attenuation processes were confirmed through groundwater samples, biological analysis and metagenomic classification.

Groundwater quality analysis in Hail region of northwest Saudi Arabia based on physicochemical investigation

The acquired groundwater data from seventeen wells were hydrochemically analyzed for Sulfate, Chloride, Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, pH, EC (Electrical Conductivity), TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), total hardness, and total alkalinity concentrations and then compared to the national and international standards. The results range as follows: pH (6.65–8.26), EC (382–1214 μS·cm−1), Total hardness (72–310 ppm), TDS (258–775 ppm), Total alkalinity (54–138 ppm), Cl- (19–202 ppm), Ammonia (NH3) (0.0 to 1.5 mg/liter), Nitrate (NO3) (4.7 to 65.6 ppm), Nitrite (NO2) (0.007 to 0.05 ppm), and sulfate (SO4) (29–278 ppm). About 70.58 % of the study area’s groundwater samples have TDS levels below 500 mg/l, which are considered safe for drinking. The EC of the groundwater found that 100 % of the samples fall within the allowed level. Based on these results, the groundwater quality is suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes in Hail region. Hence, this research shows that using GIS and chemical analysis of groundwater could be useful tools for the decision-making process of local and international authorities and water resources management.

The study examines the groundwater around Prague Castle as an example of an extreme urban environment that has been influenced by human activity since the Neolithic period. The long-term human activity, including several still-functioning drainage adits, resulted in a number of aggradation and degradation processes that have significantly impacted the groundwater regime. Furthermore, building development, particularly large-scale concrete structures, has had a notable effect on groundwater chemistry. This paper presents results of available archival chemical analyses from the area of interest (Fig. 1), along with our own groundwater chemical analyses. The results of recovery test in the anthropogenic alluvium well underneath the courtyard III of Prague Castle (Weiss et al. 2024) indicate that the transmissivity of saturated alluvium is low (8–10 m2/day). However, it is reasonable to assume a higher transmissivity for the entire area. The clayey anthropogenic alluvium near the surface likely has a much lower permeability than the underlying fractured zone of the Letná Formation made of shales (Late Ordovician). Field reconnaissance in the drainage adits indicates that groundwater flows directly from the historic alluvium (presence of bones and other organic remains) into the Ordovician strata. The existence of a clay aquitard, as mentioned by some authors (e.g. Kos 1965), between the historical alluvium and the underlying Ordovician is thus unlikely. The analysed water samples from selected objects can be classified into three distinct groups based on their pH levels: slightly acidic (precipitation water, and the well in the St. George’s Convent – V4), neutral (majority of samples), and alkaline (the environment underneath the courtyard III of Prague Castle). Slightly acidic pH level only applies to samples from precipitation or probable seepage (V4). The concentration of Cl- in the majority of the analysed groundwater samples is higher than the natural background level of around 8–10 mg/l, which indicates an anthropogenic source. The major source of these ions in the area is likely the use of NaCl to salt roads and sidewalks during the winter months, which has been a common practice for decades. The overall analysis of the studied samples identified two main hydrochemical types of water: Type A and Type B. Type A is represented by moderately alkaline water that is rich in sulphate and calcium/magnesium. Type B, on the other hand, is represented by strongly alkaline water rich in hydrogencarbonate and calcium, found mainly under the courtyard III of Prague Castle, which stands on a concrete structure. Type A is the predominant type and is typical of water originating in the pyrite-bearing shales of the Letná Formation. The high sulphate content of these waters may cause “sulphate attack” of concrete, leading to its decomposition and thus affecting the durability of building structures. This study provides valuable insights into groundwater chemistry in urban environments that can be applied to other similar sites.

Assessment of Hydrochemical Facies on Groundwater Quality in Daenaa Village and its Surroundings, West Limboto District

The study is required to evaluate the groundwater condition, such as finding the relationship with the lithology, determining the facies of groundwater, and providing an overview of the present groundwater conditions, genetics, and groundwater quality. This study aims to explain the relationship between lithology and groundwater chemistry, groundwater quality, and the determination of the chemical facies of groundwater to determine the genetic type of groundwater. This study uses field survey methods and random sampling techniques, measurements of groundwater physical properties, trilinear piper diagrams, and laboratory analysis in the form of rock geochemical analysis (XRF) at the PSDMBP Laboratory and chemical analysis of groundwater at the PT Global Quality Analytical Laboratory. The results show that the lithology in the study area consists of clastic limestone, sandstone, breccia, and dacite. Lithology in the study area primarily plays an essential role in chemical ion enrichment in groundwater. Determination of groundwater quality is based on Permenkes, Permen ESDM, and ISDW, which obtained eleven well points in the good quality category, five well points in the poor quality category, and four other well points categorized as poor quality. Based on the analysis results in the trilinear piper diagram, there is one type of groundwater chemical facies (not varied), namely the Ca-Cl type facies. The presence of the Ca-Cl facies type is interpreted as a seawater intrusion phase.

Comparison of methods to assess the accuracy of the incorporation of censored chemical data in descriptive statistical analysis of contaminated groundwate

Chemical analyses of groundwater often present data sets with censored values, i.e., below the detection limit (LOD). When the proportion of censored values is significant, descriptive (mean, median and standard deviation) or exploratory geochemical analysis may be impaired. Ignoring such data or replacing them with some predetermined value is not always the recommended alternative. Thus, the objective of this research is to investigate the applicability of four methods in estimating censored chemical data from an area with contaminated groundwater. Three statistical methods were used: parametric (Maximum Likelihood Estimation, MLE), non-parametric (Kaplan-Meier, KM) and robust (Order Regression Methods, ROS), in addition to the traditional method of direct replacement of censored data, using LOD/2. The MLE, assuming a Gaussian distribution of the data (MLE-no), yielded allowable substitution factors, close to 0.5, similarly to the traditional substitution method (LOD/2). Validation with complete datasets with the same estimation methods and considering three artificial LOD attested to the good results of MLE-no and ROS with 25% and 50% of censored data, respectively, as well as LOD/2. The first two methods are preferable to LOD/2 as they are statistically based. It is recommended in future studies that such estimation methods be combined with other geostatistical treatments to improve the spatial analysis of hydrochemical datasets.

Chemical Analysis of Groundwater and Wastewater in the Area of the Tengiz Deposit of the Atyrau Region of the Republic of Kazakhstan

This article analyzes the content of the chemical composition of groundwater and wastewater of the Tengiz deposit located in the Zhyloy district of Atyrau region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This analysis is necessary to determine the deposition of inorganic salts in oilfield equipment. The analysis shows that the content of chloride anions and magnesium cations prevails in groundwater and wastewater. Thus, the content of chloride anions exceeds the content of other anions up to 2-3 times of sulfate anions in groundwater and wastewater and up to 2.5-5 times of bicarbonate anions in groundwater and 17-27 times in wastewater. Among the cations, the maximum values are characteristic of magnesium cations, whose content exceeds the calcium content by more than 3.5 times in wastewater and more than 6.5 times in groundwater. In addition, the magnesium content exceeds more than 5 times the content of the sum of sodium and potassium ions. Thus, according to the results of the study, it was determined that the main salts affecting the oilfield equipment at the Tengiz field are magnesium chloride salts.

Hydrodynamic and Geostress Controls on CBM Enrichment in the Anze Block, Southern Qinshui Basin, North China

The coalbed methane (CBM) resource in the southern Qinshui Basin, North China, is abundant. Proper understanding of the geological control factors on CBM enrichment in Anze Block of southern Qinshui Basin is critical to design efficient CBM development plan in this area. Field and laboratory data including well logging, well testing, hydraulic fracturing, and groundwater chemical analysis of were used to evaluate the characteristics of the hydrodynamic and geostress, and then, the combined effect of hydrodynamic and geostress field on CBM enrichment was analyzed. The results show that the total dissolved solids (TDS) of groundwater in the west is generally lower than that in other areas in the block, and the primary formation water is NaHCO3-type. The geostress field shows a σ H > σ v > σ h dominated geostress type in this area, and the western block has a lower value than the eastern block. The strong hydrodynamic field with low TDS also has a lower gas content while the weak hydrodynamic field with high TDS has a higher gas content. Both the TDS value and the horizontal stress differences are positively related to the gas content, indicating that inactive hydrodynamics and large horizontal stress difference of coal reservoir is favorable for CBM preservation.

Pre-monsoon and post-monsoon groundwater chemical analysis For Burdwan (West Bengal), India

This study has been carried out to find the groundwater quality of Burdwan district of West Bengal during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. For this, the data of physicochemical parameters have been collected from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) website for the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon season for the year 2017. It is found that during the post-monsoon season, the water quality of all the stations falls in the category of excellent, and during the pre-monsoon season, the water quality of most of the stations is good.

The water sample collected from different location in Hinganghat, Wardha (India). The ground water samples were analyzed for the following chemical parameters; pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Alkalinity (TA), Total Hardness (TH), Chloride, Nitrate, Sulphate, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Total Dissolved Solid (TDS). The results Obtained shown that it is free from anomalies and suitable for human and cattle consumption as well as irrigation purpose in Hinganghat, Wardha districts, Maharashtra, India.

Underground salt weathering of heritage stone: lithological and environmental constraints on the formation of sulfate efflorescences and crusts

• Salt weathering of tuff was investigated in underground cultural heritage. • Efflorescences and crusts are made of mixed sulfates, mostly hydrated, in part rare. • Salt source and variation are related to lithological variability and stone decay. • Salt occurrence and seasonality depend on microclimate changes in time and space. Salt weathering is one of the most damaging processes affecting stone conservation and represents an extensively debated topic in heritage science. The main subject of previous research is the built heritage, whereas other types of assets are often neglected, such as underground cultural heritage. This paper introduces an investigation of stone decay in the subterranean environment focused on salt weathering, its patterns, compositional features, and variability in time and space, aiming at finding its driving forces in the rock properties and environmental setting. Field explorations and the mineralogical analysis of salt efflorescences and crusts were integrated by the petrographic, geochemical, and petrophysical characterization of the rock substrates, a microclimate monitoring, and the chemical analysis of groundwater and rainwater. The subject of study is the underground archaeological-historical site of Yoshimi Hyaku Ana in Japan, a complex of Kofun tombs of the 6th–7th century and galleries of the WWII era. The site is affected by intense salt weathering, involving efflorescences and crusts composed of mixed soluble sulfates, mostly hydrated: gypsum, alunogen, alum-(Na), halotrichite, epsomite, polyhalite, tamarugite, thenardite, and mirabilite. They derive principally from the dissolution of rock-forming minerals and components (pyrite, glass, feldspars, etc.) from the Miocene volcanic tuffs into which the site is excavated. The tuffs show a certain lithological diversity (e.g., glass amount and chemico-mineralogical composition) that controls the space variability of salt composition. Another major influencing factor is the underground microclimate, which also affects the time variability and seasonality of salt weathering. The innermost underground areas have an extremely high relative humidity (~100%) and are essentially salt-free, whereas, nearby the site entrances, the wider fluctuations of air temperature and humidity create conditions for salt crystallization in the dry winter season and deliquescence in summer. Depending on the solubility of each salt phase, cycles of crystallization/dissolution and hydration/dehydration can occur both seasonally and in the short-term, causing severe stresses to the stone and damage.

Hydrogeological and Hydrochemical Regime Evaluation in Flamouria Basin in Edessa (Northern Greece)

Groundwater quality deterioration and overexploitation constitute two critical environmental issues worldwide. In this study, with the aim to achieve a groundwater sustainability purpose, a preliminary hydrogeochemical survey is conducted in the Flamouria basin, Pella prefecture, Northern Greece using available and collected data. For this purpose, chemical analyses of groundwater, springs, and surface water were collected and analyzed with three electrical resistivity tomographies (ERTs). A Groundwater Quality Index (GQI), along with a nitrate susceptibility assessment is applied within the porous aquifer. The water quality analysis along with GQI application showed excellent water quality for potable and irrigation use however highlighted future issue for irrigation utilization as the high alkalinity and total dissolved solid (TDS)could generate excessive soil salinization. Moreover, the application of a methodology for the identification of “Nitrate Vulnerable Zone” called the Protection from Natural and Anthropogenic sources (PNA) highlighted the natural susceptibility to nitrate pollution of the porous aquifer, especially in the central part of the area where most agricultural activity is localized. The work further confirmed how the proposed elaboration could represent an easy and widely applicable hydrological assessment where there is also limited data available.

An integrated electrical resistivity and geochemical approach to delineate groundwater contamination due to seawater intrusion in the southern part of Mangalore, Karnataka, India

In this paper, integration of electrical resistivity survey and chemical analyses of groundwater has been executed in Mangalore’s southern part, Karnataka to delineate seawater intrusion phenomena. About 11 locations representing different hydrogeological and geomorphological setups were selected for the vertical electrical sounding (VES) to identify the subsurface formations and the extent of seawater intrusion. With the VES, the contaminated groundwater zones and the depth to fresh and saline water interface have been demarcated. Overall, 59 groundwater samples were subjected to various geochemical analysis viz; pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, total hardness, alkalinity, calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), sodium (Na2+), potassium (K+)and sulfate (SO4 2-) to understand the nature of salinity in the aquifer. The geochemical analyses show that good groundwater conditions characterize the study area except for the southern part. The southern part is under the moderate to high salinity hazard risk, possibly due to its proximity to the sea and hydraulic connection with the seawater through the tidal creek. Two among the VES locations situated in this region show a saline water trend towards the bottom, and in the rest of the VES locations, a freshwater trend is encountered towards the depth.

Groundwater quality assessment for drinking and irrigation purpose using GIS, Piper diagram, and water quality index

The chemical behavior of groundwater is one of the most dynamic areas of environmental research. In the present study, groundwater sampling from different locations in the central and south-eastern parts of Romania was performed to assess groundwater chemistry and to compare water types using distribution maps. Groundwater chemistry has been evaluated and natural processes are identified as control factors for hydrochemistry. The Piper diagram was created to compare the results of water types. Chemical analysis of groundwater was used to calculate the values of the water quality index. Romanian drinking water Law EPA 458-2002 and WHO standards were taken into account when calculating the WQI. The SAR index was used to evaluate groundwater samples, taken from in the study area, and used for irrigation purposes. The classification of water types based on water quality (WQI) values for each groundwater sample shows that 80% of the analyzed samples can be used as drinking water resources, the rest of 20% being intended for irrigation.

Taya Caves, a Buddhist marvel hidden in underground Japan: stone properties, deterioration, and environmental setting

The Buddhist sacred site of Taya Caves is a gem hidden underground in Yokohama, Japan. The caves were excavated and sculpted into bare rock by Shingon Buddhist monks from the Kamakura until the Edo period (thirteenth–nineteenth century), and dedicated to ascetic training, rituals, and pilgrimage. They are a maze of halls and galleries decorated with hundreds of rock-cut reliefs, picturing deities and masters of Buddhism, temples and shrines, real and fantastic animals, vegetal motifs, mandalas, zodiac signs, family crests, etc. The history and rock art of Taya Caves and the urge to preserve their cultural value led to this first-ever scientific investigation, dealing with the stone properties, deterioration, and environmental setting. Textural, mineralogical, geochemical, and petrophysical investigations were combined with a microclimate monitoring and chemical analyses of groundwater and rainwater. The caves are excavated into a clay-rich fossiliferous siltstone, extremely soft and porous and highly susceptible to water-driven weathering. Water represents a constant in Taya Caves, either flowing, dripping, and stagnant; or rising from the subsoil; or related to the extremely high relative humidity. Crusts and efflorescences represent important indicators of mineral dissolution and mobilization. The crusts are made of gypsum, crystallized from the dissolution of calcareous bioclasts and oxidation of pyrite, with minor calcite. The efflorescences are composed of chlorides, phosphates, sulfates, and carbonates, possibly deriving from agrochemicals and the surface vegetation cover. The salt weathering is strictly related to the microenvironmental variables and physico-chemical properties of the phases and waters involved. Rock-water interaction is particularly damaging even considering just the physical mechanisms. The stone is strongly sensitive to water absorption, hygroscopic adsorption, and slaking: the stresses generated by in-pore water and air movement and the swelling clay minerals may lead to rapid disintegration, especially during cyclic processes. This research is expected to raise concerns about the safeguard of Taya Caves and support future monitoring and conservation plans, and to foster a wider promotion and valorization of this heritage site.

Chemical Analysis of Ground Water of Purnia District town, Bihar, India – A case study

Water pollution is a serious problem as nearly 80% of India's surface water and a considerable number of growing groundwater sources have been contaminated by inorganic and biological pollutants. Pollution of water resources occurs mainly through point and non-point (diffusion) sources. The major source of water pollution can be categorized as municipal, ag ricultural and industrial. Municipal water consists of water from houses and commercial establishment, which run off leached up to groundwater table to contaminate the source. Agriculture including commercial live stock and animal farm wastes & lots is the main source o f many organic and inorganic pollutants. These contaminant s include both sediment from erosion of cropland an d compounds of phosphorus and nitrogen that partly or iginated from animal wastes, fertilizers and common agro- biocide. Animal waste and domestic wastes are high in oxygen demanding material nitrogen and phosphorus and often they harbor pathogenic microbes. In India , raw level of major ions (notably phosphate, nitra te, fluoride & chloride), metals (notably iron & arseni c) and liable & non liable dissolve organic compoun ds ( DOC) vary significantly across the region and with season. However, in India particularly rural sector s groundwater (major source of potable water) resources are mainly polluted through the poor septic syst ems, small disposal pits, landfills, animal lots, fertil izers and application of sludge's. Keeping this vie w a laboratory study was conducted to monitor the groundwater quality of selected sites of Purnia, Sub-urban town of Kosy region Bihar ( once called Kalapani ) by examining the various Physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, T.D.S., D.O & C.O.D etc. A comparison with ICMR, WHO and other agencies standard shows that the groundwater is nearly suitable for d rinking purpose and for other useful anthropogenic activities. An attempt has also been made to understand the water quality index (WQI ) .

Identification of leachate infiltration and its flow pathway in landfill by means of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT).

Sanitary landfills are a well-planned engineering work for final disposal of municipal solid waste in order to minimize the environmental impacts in soil and groundwater. Therefore, several control systems are installed such as liners and leachate and biogas collectors. However, the establishment of landfill in vulnerable areas, the inadequate operations, and failures in collectors and liner systems can cause subsurface contamination. The discovery of eventual leachate leakage usually is based on chemical analyses of groundwater using monitoring wells; which may not be representative in spatial terms. This work involves a geophysical monitoring of the leachate percolation in a landfill waste cell closed in 2014, in which geomembrane boreholes and aquifer contamination have been proved. The DC resistivity method was applied by means of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in order to detect eventual contrasts in electrical properties. Twelve ERT lines have been carried out in a steady mesh during three years of study (2016, 2017, and 2018). The results of 2016 allowed a clear contrast between zones of leachate percolation into the aquifer and the natural environment. The comparative analyses of the three-year monitoring results reveal a gradual increase in resistivity values in the areas of leachate percolation. The absence of replacement of biodegradable organic matter after 2014 conditions the gradual decrease of leachate salinity. In this sense, the increase in resistivity is an indicator of the tendency for chemical stabilization of the organic waste and existence of natural attenuation processes.

Groundwater flow patterns and hydrochemical facies of Kendal groundwater basin, Central Java Province, Indonesia

Information on groundwater flow patterns is very important in groundwater conservation efforts. The patterns of groundwater flow will also affect the groundwater chemistry. However, information on this issue in some areas is often neglected or not yet available such as in Kendal district, Central Java Province, Indonesia. This paper presents the groundwater investigations in the Kendal groundwater basin area of Kendal district. The investigations cover geological survey, including 114 points of observation and measurements of shallow wells and deep wells. Groundwater sampling also carried out at 15 points that distributed evenly for groundwater chemical analysis. The results showed that the groundwater flow patterns in Kendal are generally flowed from south to north direction, for both the unconfined aquifer and confined aquifer. Based on the trilinear piper diagram, the groundwater facies for unconfined aquifer consists of magnesium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and mixed types. Whereas in the confined aquifer, the results obtained are of sodium chloride, calcium chloride and mixed types. Some similarities of groundwater facies found between the unconfined aquifer and confined aquifer, indicating an interaction of both aquifers. In addition, ion enrichment from the recharge area to the discharge area found due to the interaction of groundwater with aquifer material based on the stiff diagrams.

Geochemistry of ground water the Yurubcheno-Tokhomo hydrocarbon accumulation zone

In this study the chemical analysis of groundwater in Yurubcheno-Tokhomo hydrocarbon accumulation zone (YTHAZ) was carried out. The analysis revealed that fresh, brackish, saline waters and brines of various chemical types occur in the study area. Water salinity increases with the depth, but this dependency is not observed in Vendian and Riphean oil and gas deposits. The most mineralized brines occur in the salt-bearing hydrogeological formation. On the basis of the data on the geochemistry of groundwater, the possibilities of their further practical application were determined.

Ecological and hydrogeological factors of qualitative composition destabilization of drinking groundwater within the central part of DDAB

Formulation of the problem. The paper is devoted to a topical environmental theme – a study of the destabilization of drinking groundwater quality in the conditions of modern intensive technogenesis of geological environment. The purpose of the article is 2 components of a study of the groundwater quality deterioration of buchak-kaniv aquifer: - an identification of the ecological and hydrogeological factors of influence on the water qualitative composition; - an ensuring of the environmentally safe use of groundwater. Materials and methods. The research is based on an analysis of the results of over 700 groundwater chemical analyses of the target aquifer within the region. The chemical researches have been carried out during the period of active man-made pressure on the geological environment of studied territory (1960-2015). The available current data of geological, ecological and neotectonic conditions of studied area have been also used. The following methods of obtaining, processing and interpretation of necessary ecological-hydrogeological data have been used in the paper: field, chemical-analytical, comparative and graphical methods. A number of the common research methods have been used for the information processing – an analysis, a synthesis, a systematization, a classification, a modeling. The mathematical and statistical methods have been also used in the processing of received large data set. The interpolation and analogy methods have been used to simulate changes in the groundwater hydrochemical features using MapInfo Professional 10.0. Results and scientific novelty. For the first time on the basis of analysis of geological, ecological-hydrogeological and neotectonic conditions of region, the factors of influence on the qualitative composition of groundwater at the buchak-kaniv water intakes were revealed. On the basis of these factors – the priority indicators of buchak-kaniv aquifer water quality for its systematic hydrogeochemical monitoring under the infiltration of pollutants from the surface and their inflow from below in the zones of influence of tectonic structures have been proposed. For the first time a direct positive correlation between a change of the content of characteristic indicator elements of influence on the ecological-hydrogeological state of groundwater (mineralization, Cl-, F-, Fetotal, Br-, B3 +, J-) and the value of total water withdrawal in the zone of direct influence of tectonic faults of East-Poltava tectonic structure has been found. An approach for the ecologically safe use of target aquifer waters within the buchak-kaniv water intakes of Eastern Ukraine, which is based on the established correlation between the factors of influence and the qualitative composition of waters, has been developed. Practical significance. Due to an approbation of the proposed water quality control system at the Poltava water intakes network, which is strategically important within the region of research, an optimization of the total water withdrawal at the water intakes has been justified (the recommended limit is 50-60 thousand m3/day). The perspective areas for location of new water intakes within a 40 km radius around Poltava city have been identified (a total area – 750 km2). The estimated resources of drinking groundwater (54.5 thousand m3/day) have been calculated. Due to the using of these resources it is possible to gradually replace the current water supply of urban agglomeration with high-quality groundwater.
