Statistical Combination of ATLAS Run 2 Searches for Charginos and Neutralinos at the LHC.

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model W, Z, or h bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30-100GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%-40%.

Search for long-lived particles using out-of-time trackless jets in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived particles decaying in the outer regions of the CMS silicon tracker or in the calorimeters is presented. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. A novel technique, using nearly trackless and out-of-time jet information combined in a deep neural network discriminator, is employed to identify decays of long-lived particles. The results are interpreted in a simplified model of chargino-neutralino production, where the neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle, is long-lived, and decays to a gravitino and either a Higgs or Z boson. This search is most sensitive to neutralino proper decay lengths of approximately 0.5 m, for which masses up to 1.18 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The current search is the best result to date in the mass range from the kinematic limit imposed by the Higgs boson mass up to 1.8 TeV.

Search for chargino-neutralino production in events with Higgs and W bosons using 137 fb\u22121 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A search for electroweak production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles in final states with one lepton, a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The observed yields are consistent with backgrounds expected from the standard model. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified SUSY model of chargino-neutralino production, with the chargino decaying to a W boson and the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) and the neutralino decaying to a Higgs boson and the LSP. Charginos and neutralinos with masses up to 820 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level when the LSP mass is small, and LSPs with mass up to 350 GeV are excluded when the masses of the chargino and neutralino are approximately 700 GeV.

Search for supersymmetry using Higgs boson to diphoton decays at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A search for supersymmetry (SUSY) is presented where at least one Higgs boson is produced and decays to two photons in the decay chains of pair-produced SUSY particles. Two analysis strategies are pursued: one focused on strong SUSY production and the other focused on electroweak SUSY production. The presence of charged leptons, additional Higgs boson candidates, and various kinematic variables are used to categorize events into search regions that are sensitive to different SUSY scenarios. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.5 fb−1. No statistically significant excess of events is observed relative to the standard model expectations. We exclude bottom squark pair production for bottom squark masses below 530 GeV and a lightest neutralino mass of 1 GeV; wino-like chargino-neutralino production in gauge-mediated SUSY breaking (GMSB) for chargino and neutralino masses below 235 GeV with a gravitino mass of 1 GeV; and higgsino-like chargino-neutralino production in GMSB, where the neutralino decays exclusively to a Higgs boson and a gravitino for neutralino masses below 290 GeV.

Electroweak superpartners scrutinized at the LHC in events with multi-leptons

We analyze a multi-lepton signal plus missing transverse energy from neutrinos expected at the LHC for a bino-like neutralino as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), when the left sneutrino is the next-to-LSP and hence a suitable source of binos. The discussion is carried out in the framework of the μνSSM, where the presence of R-parity violating (RPV) couplings involving right-handed neutrinos solves the μ problem and can reproduce simultaneously the neutrino data. Left sneutrinos/sleptons are pair-produced at pp collisions decaying to binos, with the latter decaying via RPV to Wℓ or Zν. This signal can be compared with LHC searches for electroweak superpartners through chargino–neutralino production. The reduced cross section of the sneutrino/slepton production in comparison with the one of the latter process, limits the sensitivity of the searches to small sneutrino/slepton masses. Although the resulting compressed spectrum typically evades the aforementioned searches, we show that analyses using recursive jigsaw reconstruction are sensitive to these scenarios. As a by-product, we find that the region of bino masses 110–120 GeV and sneutrino masses 120–140 GeV can give rise to a tri-lepton signal compatible with the local excess recently reported by ATLAS.

Search for new phenomena in final states with two opposite-charge, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=13 TeV

Search results are presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-charge, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. The search for a kinematic edge targets production of particles sensitive to the strong force, while the resonance search targets both strongly and electroweakly produced new physics. The observed yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model, and the results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry. In a gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) model of gluino pair production with decay chains including Z bosons, gluino masses up to 1500–1770 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level depending on the lightest neutralino mass. In a model of electroweak chargino-neutralino production, chargino masses as high as 610 GeV are excluded when the lightest neutralino is massless. In GMSB models of electroweak neutralino-neutralino production, neutralino masses up to 500-650 GeV are excluded depending on the decay mode assumed. Finally, in a model with bottom squark pair production and decay chains resulting in a kinematic edge in the dilepton invariant mass distribution, bottom squark masses up to 980–1200 GeV are excluded depending on the mass of the next-to-lightest neutralino.

Combined search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=13 TeV

A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at sqrt{s}=13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650–750 (550–750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.

Search for supersymmetry with Higgs boson to diphoton decays using the razor variables at [formula omitted

An inclusive search for anomalous Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel and in association with at least one jet is presented, using LHC proton–proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. The razor variables MR and R2, as well as the momentum and mass resolution of the diphoton system, are used to categorize events into different search regions. The search result is interpreted in the context of strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric particles. We exclude bottom squark pair-production with masses below 450 GeV for bottom squarks decaying to a bottom quark, a Higgs boson, and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) for LSP masses below 250 GeV. For wino-like chargino–neutralino production, we exclude charginos with mass below 170 GeV for LSP masses below 25 GeV. In the GMSB scenario, we exclude charginos with mass below 205 GeV for neutralinos decaying to a Higgs boson and a goldstino LSP with 100% branching fraction.

Diphoton signal of a light pseudoscalar in the NMSSM at the LHC

We explore the detection possibility of light pseudoscalar Higgs boson in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model(NMSSM) at the LHC with the center of mass energy, $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV. We focus on the parameter space which provides one of the Higgs boson as the SM-like with a mass of 125 GeV and some of the non-SM-like Higgs bosons can be light having suppressed couplings with fermions and gauge bosons due to their singlet nature. It is observed that for certain region of model parameter space, the singlet like light pseudoscalar can decay to di-photon($\gamma\gamma$) channel with a substantial branching ratio. In this study, we consider this di-photon signal of light pseudoscalar Higgs boson producing it through the chargino-neutralino production and the subsequent decay of neutralino. We consider signal consisting of two photons plus missing energy along with a lepton from the chargino decay. Performing a detailed simulation of the signal and backgrounds including detector effects, we present results for a few benchmark points corresponding to the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass in the range 60 -100 GeV. Our studies indicate that some of the benchmark points in the parameter space can be probed with a reasonable significance for 100 fb$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. We also conclude that exploiting this channel it is possible to distinguish the NMSSM from the other supersymmetric models.

Revisiting the exclusion limits from direct chargino-neutralino production at the LHC

We revisit the existing limits on the gaugino masses in various Supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios derived from Run-I data of the LHC. These limits obtained from the various final states rely heavily on the simplified assumptions regarding the masses, compositions and decay branching ratios of the gauginos. The most promising exclusion limits on the gaugino masses are obtained from trilepton final states while the second lightest neutralino ($\widetilde \chi_2^0$) decaying into the SM-like Higgs and lightest SUSY particle (LSP) results in the weakest bounds. Our aim is to assess the extent of deviation of these exclusion limits in more realistic scenarios. After a brief discussion on the various decay modes of the $\widetilde \chi_2^0$ and the lightest chargino ($\widetilde \chi^{\pm}_1$), we proceed to validate the ATLAS exclusion limits obtained from trilepton, $l\gamma\gamma$ and $lb\bar b$ final states associated with missing energy. We then consider different combinations of the relevant branching ratios to study their impact on the existing bounds. The results are presented alongside the existing exclusion limits to showcase the extent of the obtained deviation. We also observe that the three-body decay modes of $\widetilde \chi_2^0$ and $\widetilde \chi^{\pm}_1$ via off-shell slepton decays resulting in trilepton final states provide bounds that are far more severe in some parts of the available parameter space than that obtained from the usual two-body decay modes of the aforementioned gauginos.

Search for supersymmetry in events with soft leptons, low jet multiplicity, and missing transverse energy in proton–proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Results are presented from a search for supersymmetric particles in scenarios with a compressed mass spectrum. The data sample corresponds to 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The search targets top squark pair production in scenarios with mass differences Delta m = m(top squark) - m(neutralino) below the W-boson mass and with top-squark decays in the four-body mode (top squark to b l nu neutralino), where the neutralino is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The signature includes a high transverse momentum (pt) jet associated with initial-state radiation, one or two low-pt leptons, and significant missing transverse energy. The event yields observed in data are consistent with the expected background contributions from standard model processes. Limits are set on the cross section for top squark pair production as a function of the top squark and LSP masses. Assuming a 100% branching fraction for the four-body decay mode, top-squark masses below 316 GeV are excluded for Delta m = 25 GeV at 95% CL. The dilepton data are also interpreted under the assumption of chargino-neutralino production, with subsequent decays to sleptons or sneutrinos. Assuming a difference between the common lightest chargino/next lightest neutralino mass and the LSP mass of 20 GeV and a tau-enriched decay scenario, masses in the range m(chargino) < 307 GeV are excluded at 95% CL.

Search for new physics in trilepton events and limits on the associated chargino-neutralino production at CDF

We perform a search for new physics using final states consisting of three leptons and a large imbalance in transverse momentum resulting from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use data corresponding to 5.8 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. Our main objective is to investigate possible new low-momentum (down to 5 GeV/c) multi-leptonic final states not investigated by LHC experiments. Relative to previous CDF analyses, we expand the geometric and kinematic coverage of electrons and muons and utilize tau leptons that decay hadronically. Inclusion of tau leptons is particularly important for supersymmetry (SUSY) searches. The results are consistent with standard-model predictions. By optimizing our event selection to increase sensitivity to the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) SUSY model, we set limits on the associated production of chargino and neutralino, the SUSY partners of the electroweak gauge bosons. We exclude cross sections up to 0.1 pb and chargino masses up to 168 GeV/c^2 at 95% CL, for a suited set of mSUGRA parameters. We also exclude a region of the two-dimensional space of the masses of the neutralino and the supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton, not previously excluded at the Tevatron.

Anatomizing exotic production of the Higgs boson

We discuss exotic production modes of the Higgs boson and how their phenomenology can be probed in current Higgs analyses. We highlight the importance of differential distributions in disentangling standard production mechanisms from exotic modes. We present two model benchmarks for exotic Higgs production arising from chargino-neutralino production and study their impact on the current Higgs dataset. As a corollary, we emphasize that current Higgs coupling fits do not fully explore the space of new physics deviations possible in Higgs data.

Direct chargino–neutralino production at the LHC: interpreting the exclusion limits in the complex MSSM

We re-assess the exclusion limits on the parameters describing the supersymmetric (SUSY) electroweak sector of the MSSM obtained from the search for direct chargino-neutralino production at the LHC. We start from published limits obtained in simplified models, where for the case of heavy sleptons the relevant branching ratio, BR(neu2->neu1 Z), is set to one. We show how the decay mode neu2->neu1 h, which cannot be neglected in any realistic model once kinematically allowed, substantially reduces the excluded parameter region. We analyze the dependence of the excluded regions on the phase of the gaugino soft SUSY-breaking mass parameter, M_1, on the mass of the light scalar tau, on tb as well as on the squark and slepton mass scales. Large reductions in the ranges of parameters excluded can be observed in all scenarios. The branching ratios of charginos and neutralinos are evaluated using a full NLO calculation for the complex MSSM. The size of the effects of the NLO calculation on the exclusion bounds is investigated. We furthermore assess the potential reach of the experimental analyses after collecting 100/fb at the LHC running at 13 TeV.

Search for supersymmetry with like-sign lepton-tau events at CDF.

We present a search for chargino-neutralino associated production using like electric charge dilepton events collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. One lepton is identified as the hadronic decay of a tau lepton, while the other is an electron or muon. In data corresponding to 6.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we obtain good agreement with standard model predictions and set limits on the chargino-neutralino production cross section for simplified gravity- and gauge-mediated models. As an example, assuming that the chargino and neutralino decays to taus dominate, in the simplified gauge-mediated model we exclude cross sections greater than 300 fb at 95% credibility level for chargino and neutralino masses of 225 GeV/c(2). This analysis is the first to extend the LHC searches for electroweak supersymmetric production of gauginos to high tanβ and slepton next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle scenarios.

Discovery potential for supersymmetry at a high luminosity upgrade of LHC14

After completion of the LHC8 run in 2012, the plan is to upgrade the LHC for operation close to its design energy sqrt{s}=14 TeV, with a goal of collecting hundreds of fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The time is propitious to begin thinking of what is gained by even further LHC upgrades. In this report, we compute an LHC14 reach for SUSY in the mSUGRA/CMSSM model with an anticipated high luminosity upgrade. We find that LHC14 with 300 (3000) fb^{-1} has a reach for SUSY via gluino/squark searches of m(gluino)\sim3.2 TeV (3.6 TeV) for m(squark)\sim m)gluino), and a reach of m(gluino)\sim1.8 TeV (2.3 TeV) for m(squark)>> m(gluino). In the case where m(squark)>> m(gluino), then the LHC14 reach for chargino-neutralino production with decay into the Wh+MET final state reaches to m(gluino)\sim2.6 TeV for 3000 fb^{-1}.

Higgs signal in chargino-neutralino production at the LHC

We have analyzed the prospect of detecting a higgs signal in mSUGRA/CMSSM based Supersymmetric(SUSY) model via chargino-neutralino($\CH_1\N0_2$) production at 8 TeV and 14 TeV LHC energy. The signal is studied in the channel with $\ell + b \bar b + \PMET$ following the decays, $\CH_1 \to W^\pm \N0_1$, $\N0_2 \to \N0_1 h$ and $h \to b \bar b$. In this analysis reconstruction of the higgs mass out of two b-jets plays a very crucial role in determining the signal to background ratio. We follow two techniques to reconstruct higgs mass: (A) using two identified b-jets, (B) using jet substructure technique. In addition, imposing a certain set of selection cuts we observe the significance is better for the latter method. We find that a viable signal can be obtained for the higgs mass $\sim$ 125 GeV with an integrated luminosity 100 $\lumi$ for both 8 and 14 TeV LHC energy.

Search for new physics in theμμ+e/μ+E̸Tchannel with a low-pTlepton threshold at the Collider Detector at Fermilab

A search for new physics using three-lepton (trilepton) data collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 976 pb-1 is presented. The standard model predicts a low rate of trilepton events, which makes some supersymmetric processes, such as chargino-neutralino production, measurable in this channel. The mu+mu+l signature is investigated, where l is an electron or a muon, with the additional requirement of large missing transverse energy. In this analysis, the lepton transverse momenta with respect to the beam direction (pT) are as low as 5 GeV/c, a selection that improves the sensitivity to particles which are light as well as to ones which result in leptonically decaying tau leptons. At the same time, this low-p_T selection presents additional challenges due to the non-negligible heavy-quark background at low lepton momenta. This background is measured with an innovative technique using experimental data. Several dimuon and trilepton control regions are investigated, and good agreement between experimental results and standard-model predictions is observed. In the signal region, we observe one three-muon event and expect 0.4+/-0.1 mu+mu+l events

Search for Supersymmetry inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96 TeVUsing the Trilepton Signature for Chargino-Neutralino Production

We use the three lepton and missing energy trilepton signature to search for chargino-neutralino production with 2.0 fb;{-1} of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron pp[over ] collider. We expect an excess of approximately 11 supersymmetric events for a choice of parameters of the mSUGRA model, but our observation of 7 events is consistent with the standard model expectation of 6.4 events. We constrain the mSUGRA model of supersymmetry and rule out chargino masses up to 145 GeV/c;{2} for a specific choice of parameters.

Study of chargino-neutralino production at hadron colliders in a long-lived slepton scenario

The differential cross section of the chargino-neutralino production, q → χ±χ0, followed by their decays into scalar tau leptons, χ±χ0 → (±ν)(∓τ±) → (±ν)(∓l±ν), is calculated including the effect of spin correlations. In the case where is long-lived, this final state can be fully reconstructed in a hadron-collider experiment up to a discrete two-fold ambiguity. Distributions of various kinematic variables can thus be observable and tell us about masses and spins of superparticles and also parity/CP violation in interactions by comparing with the cross-section formula. Observing non-trivial distributions derived in this paper will be a good test of supersymmetry.
