Ubiquitous radio emission in quasars: Predominant AGN origin and a connection to jets, dust, and winds

We present a comprehensive study of the physical origin of radio emission in optical quasars at redshifts z < 2.5. We focus particularly on the associations between compact radio emission, dust reddening, and outflows identified in our earlier work. Leveraging the deepest low-frequency radio data available to date (LoTSS Deep DR1), we achieve radio detection fractions of up to 94%, demonstrating the virtual ubiquity of radio emission in quasars, and a continuous distribution in radio loudness. Through our analysis of radio properties, combined with spectral energy distribution modelling of deep multiwavelength photometry, we establish that the primary source of radio emission in quasars is the active galactic nucleus (AGN), rather than star formation. Modelling the dust reddening of the accretion disc emission shows a continuous increase in radio detection in quasars as a function of the reddening parameter E(B − V), suggesting a causal link between radio emission and dust reddening. Confirming previous findings, we observe that the radio excess in red quasars is most pronounced for sources with compact radio morphologies and intermediate radio loudness. We find a significant increase in [O III] and C IV outflow velocities for red quasars not seen in our control sample, with particularly powerful [O III] winds in those around the threshold from radio-quiet to radio-loud. Based on the combined characterisation of radio, reddening, and outflow properties in our sample, we favour a model in which the compact radio emission observed in quasars originates in compact radio jets and their interaction with a dusty, circumnuclear environment. In particular, our results align with the theory that jet-induced winds and shocks resulting from this interaction are the origin of the enhanced radio emission in red quasars. Further investigation of this model is crucial for advancing our understanding of quasar feedback mechanisms and their role in galaxy evolution.

Characterisation and prediction of mechanical properties in laser powder bed fusion-printed parts: a comparative analysis using machine learning

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of process parameters including scanning strategy, build orientation, and hatching distance on the mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg parts produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF). The experiment varied these parameters within defined ranges and used statistical analysis to evaluate their impact on tensile strength and ductility. Results showed that scanning strategy had the greatest influence, followed by hatching distance, while build orientation affected anisotropic properties. Microstructural analysis showed clear correlation between process conditions and mechanical strength, thereby showing the underlying mechanisms that govern material behavior. Moreover, Machine learning models, including Random Forest Regression (RFR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), were applied to predict tensile strength and ductility characteristics. RFR and SVR outperformed ANNs, showing high predictive accuracy with limited datasets. These findings emphasize the importance of optimizing L-PBF process parameters to minimize anisotropy and achieve consistent mechanical properties in produced parts.

Probing the magnetic fields of starspots with transit mapping

Starspots, regions of strong magnetic fields, serve as indicators of stellar activity and the dynamo mechanism at play in the interior of stars. The magnetic fields of main-sequence stars play a crucial role in driving stellar activity. An effective approach to better understanding stellar magnetic fields and activity lies in the detailed characterisation of starspot properties. We propose a new method for estimating the magnetic fields of starspots that employs modelling techniques of planetary transit mapping, which provides estimates of the size, intensity, and location of spots on the stellar photosphere. A starspot's maximum magnetic field was calculated using the linear relationship with the spot flux deficit, $ spot $ (the spot's brightness times its area) and the well-characterised relation for sunspots determined in this work, $B_ spot (G). Applying this relationship to previously mapped spots on the photospheres of 14 FGK and M stars yields spot maximum magnetic fields ranging from 2700 G to 4600 G, with an overall average of $3900 400$ G. We looked for correlations between starspot magnetic fields and stellar properties.\ We did not find any correlation between a spot's mean extreme magnetic field and effective temperature, nor the differential shear. However, a weak anti-correlation is seen between the spots' magnetic field and stellar age as well as between the magnetic field and the rotation period. When compared with previous results of small-scale magnetic field measurements, the B values obtained here are basically constant and near the saturation limit found for rapid rotators. This implies that it is not the intensity of the magnetic field of starspots that decreases with age but rather the filling factor. This result offers a unique window into the magnetic dynamo of stars.

Study of Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Environmentally Friendly Composites from Beer Bagasse.

The influence of bagasse fibres from beer manufacturing in mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of three polymers (BioPE, PLA, and PP) has been studied in order to develop new environmentally friendly biocomposites for injection moulding applications. Totals of 10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 30 wt% of bagasse fibre (BSG) were added to the polymers by extrusion compounding, adding specific compatibilising additives, and injected samples were mechanically characterised by tensile, Charpy impact, and hardness tests. In addition, the fractures obtained after the impact test were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess the compatibility matrix filler. Characterisation of the thermal properties is also carried out by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). Additionally, melt flow index of the biocomposites is also studied. An increase in the rigidity of the BioPE and PP composites was produced with the increase in BSG content, dealing with a decrease in maximum strain and impact resistance; whereas, in the filled BGS PLA biocomposites, Young's modulus was lower than that of the PLA material, improving the ductility of the PLA-BGS formulations. Compatibilisation effect was, therefore, different in the nine developed formulations, and the BGS content also influenced their thermal, mechanical, and rheological behaviours.

The MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey Data Release 2: Wideband continuum catalogues and a measurement of the cosmic radio dipole

We present the second data release of the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS), consisting of wideband continuum catalogues of 391 pointings observed at L band. The full wideband catalogue covers 4344 deg2 of sky, reaches a depth of 10 µJy beam−1, and contains 971 980 sources. With its balance between survey depth and sky coverage, MALS DR2 covers five orders of magnitude of flux density, presenting a robust view of the extragalactic radio source population down to 200 µJy. Using this catalogue, we perform a measurement of the cosmic radio dipole, an anisotropy in the number counts of radio sources with respect to the cosmic background, analogous to the dipole found in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For this measurement, we present the characterisation of completeness and noise properties of the catalogue, and show that a declination-dependent systematic affects the number density of faint sources. In the dipole measurement on the MALS catalogue, we recover reasonable dipole measurements once we model the declination systematic with a linear fit between the size of the major axis of the restoring beam and the amount of sources of each pointing. The final results are consistent with the CMB dipole in terms of direction and amplitude, unlike many recent measurements of the cosmic radio dipole made with other centimetre wavelength catalogues, which generally show a significantly larger amplitude. This result demonstrates the value of dipole measurements with deeper and more sparse radio surveys, as the population of faint sources probed may have had a significant impact on the measured dipole.

Characterisation of the Mechanical Properties of Natural Fibre Polypropylene Composites Manufactured with Automated Tape Placement

The integration of natural fibre thermoplastic composites, particularly those combining flax fibres with polypropylene, offers a promising alternative to traditional synthetic composites, emphasising sustainability in composite materials. This study investigates the mechanical properties of flax/polypropylene composites manufactured using flashlamp automated tape placement and press consolidation, individually and in combination. Tensile, compression, three-point bending, and double cantilever beam tests are utilised for comparing these manufacturing processes and the mechanical performance of the resulting composites. The microstructure of the tapes is investigated using cross-sectional microscopy, and the thermophysical behaviour is analysed utilising thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The temperature during placement is monitored using an infrared camera, and the pressure is mapped with pressure-sensitive films. The natural fibre tapes show a good aptitude for being manufactured with automated tape placement. The tensile performance of tapes manufactured with automated tape placement is close to that of press consolidated samples. Compression, flexural properties, and the mode I fracture toughness critical energy release rate all benefit from a second consolidation step.

DYNAMIC LIGHT SCATTERING-BASED MICRORHEOLOGY OF THERMOSENSITIVE CHITOSAN HYDROGELS: PRELIMINARY STUDIES

This paper presents a preliminary characterisation of the local mechanical properties of thermosensitive chitosan systems using dynamic light scattering, an endeavour that has not yet been attempted. The tests included solutions of chitosan chloride with the addition of sodium glycerophosphate as well as those without a substance to support the gelation process. There was much better agreement between the data obtained from measurements on the microscopic and macroscopic scales for systems without the addition of glycerophosphate. In most cases, the addition of a pH-neutralising salt resulted in higher values of dynamic moduli than those obtained during microrheological measurements. Therefore, it seems to be possible to use dynamic light scattering to conduct microrheological studies of thermosensitive chitosan systems.

Mechanical characterisation of a structural battery electrolyte

Structural battery composites require a structural electrolyte to work. The structural battery electrolyte has a bicontinuous microstructure which enables its dual roles: mechanical load transfer and ion transport between the electrodes. These structural electrolytes are difficult to characterise mechanically via bulk tests. For this reason, no extensive characterisation of the mechanical properties of the structural battery electrolyte has been performed to date. In this study, we highlight the many challenges of these types of tests, including the complexity of sample manufacturing, preparation and testing. We further demonstrate a method to prepare test samples and to perform mechanical tests on the structural battery electrolyte. The executed test campaign provides measures of Young's modulus (approximately 412 MPa) and Poisson's ratio (0.34), as well as tensile (4.85 MPa) and compressive strength (32.66 MPa) and strain to failure (2.49 % and 28.11 % in tension and compression, respectively). In addition, cure shrinkage is investigated and found insignificant. These results are crucial for the further development of structural battery composites as they allow for accurate prediction of their internal stress states.

Characterisation and analysis of soil properties and trace elements in agricultural soils of Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Morocco: focus on stable strontium and caesium

ABSTRACT This study explores strontium (Sr) and caesium (Cs) dynamics in Moroccan agricultural soils, focusing on contaminant impacts and soil properties. Soil samples from El Koudia, Merchouch, and El Guich exhibit different textures: clayey (Merchouch), sandy clay loam (El Koudia), and sandy (El Guich). Chemical analysis shows consistent pH, with %CaCO3 at 1%, 4%, and 6%, and organic matter content at 4.5%, 1.1%, and 3.3% in Merchouch, El Guich, and El Koudia, respectively. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) and levels of Ca, K, Na, Mn, and Fe were measured. X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified quartz as the main mineral, with site-specific variations. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) indicated consistent Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb levels, and Rb varied significantly. Sr concentrations were 0.17 ppm in El Koudia and Merchouch, and 0.32 ppm in El Guich. Cs was undetected. This research highlights complex soil properties, elemental composition, and contaminant distribution in agricultural soils.

Water-Based Recycling Process of FTO/SnO2 Substrate for Sustainable Perovskite Solar Cell Technology.

Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate is an important and expensive component in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which accounts for up to 40% of a typical PSC raw material cost. In this study, we investigated the recyclability of SnO2/FTO in PSCs by washing the spent PSCs using different solvent such as dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, water, and acetone/water mixture. Characterisation of properties of the SnO2/FTO substrates recovered from the PSCshow the surface wettability of SnO2/FTO is largely unchanged with water washing while a higher hydrophobicity is obtained with organic solvent washing. Comparison of electronic properties of the SnO2/FTO substrate shows a downward shift of the conduction band by 180 meV with water washing, creating favourable energy alignment with adjacent perovskite for efficient interfacial charge injection. Consequently, PSCs using the water-based recycled SnO2/FTO substrates produced a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.33% which is comparable to the device using fresh SnO2/FTO substrate (PCE = 19.85%). Furthermore, we demonstrated that the water washing process could retain property of SnO2/FTO substrate for decent PSC performance up to four recycling cycles. This study opens new avenues towards recycling of valuable FTO substrates in PSCs for increased sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

The role of the thermal properties of electrons on the dispersion properties of Alfvén waves in space plasmas

Context. The transition from left-hand to right-hand polarised Alfvén waves depends on the wavenumber, the ratio of kinetic to magnetic pressure, β, the temperature anisotropy, and the ion composition of the plasma. Along with the temperature anisotropy, the electron-to-proton temperature ratio, Te/Tp, is of great relevance for the characterisation of the thermal properties of a plasma. This ratio varies significantly between different space plasma environments. Thus, studying how variations in this ratio affect the polarisation properties of electromagnetic waves becomes highly relevant for our understanding of the dynamics of space plasmas. Aims. We present an extensive study on the effect of the thermal properties of electrons on the behaviour and characteristics of Alfvénic waves in fully kinetic linear theory, as well as on the transition from the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron wave to the kinetic Alfvén wave. Methods. We solved the fully kinetic dispersion relation for oblique electromagnetic waves of the Alfvén branch in a homogenous Maxwellian electron-proton plasma. We quantified the effect of the thermal properties of electrons by varying the electron-to-proton temperature ratio for different configurations of the propagation angle, βp = 8πnkTp/B2, and wavenumber. Results. We show that the temperature ratio, Te/Tp, has strong and non-trivial effects on the polarisation of the Alfvénic modes, especially at kinetic scales (k⊥ρL > 1, where k⊥ = k sin θ, θ is the propagation angle, and ρL = cs/Ωp, with cs the plasma sound speed and Ωp the proton’s gyrofrequency) and βe + βp > 0.5. We conclude that electron inertia plays an important role in the kinetic scale physics of the kinetic Alfvén wave in the warm plasma regime, and thus cannot be excluded in hybrid models for computer simulations.

Characterisation and modelling of potassium-ion batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative technology to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their significantly reduced dependency on critical minerals. KIBs may also present an opportunity for superior fast-charging compared to LIBs, with significantly faster K-ion electrolyte transport properties already demonstrated. In the absence of a viable K-ion electrolyte, a full-cell KIB rate model in commercial cell formats is required to determine the fast-charging potential for KIBs. However, a thorough and accurate characterisation of the critical electrode material properties determining rate performance—the solid state diffusivity and exchange current density—has not yet been conducted for the leading KIB electrode materials. Here, we accurately characterise the effective solid state diffusivities and exchange current densities of the graphite negative electrode and potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate K2Mn[Fe(CN)6]\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${{{{\\rm{K}}}}}_{2}{{{\\rm{Mn}}}}[{{{\\rm{Fe}}}}{({{{\\rm{CN}}}})}_{6}]$$\\end{document} (KMF) positive electrode, through a combination of optimised material design and state-of-the-art analysis. Finally, we present a Doyle-Fuller-Newman model of a KIB full cell with realistic geometry and loadings, identifying the critical materials properties that limit their rate capability.

Shining a light on Co(terpyridine)2 complexes: Unravelling the impact of ligand substitution at the 4’-position on optical and electrochemical properties through experimental and theoretical investigations

The present work involves synthesis, characterisation and study of absorption, emission and electrochemical properties of cobalt(III) bis-terpyridine complexes with varying substituent at the 4’-position of the central pyridine ring of terpyridine moiety. The work clearly demonstrates the modulation of the light harvesting window with changing the substituent viz. phenyl, naphthalenyl and thienyltriphenylamine. The naphthalenylterpyridine based cobalt complex shows considerable room temperature luminescence. Cyclic voltammetry data of the complexes reveal a reversible CoIII/II based redox feature. DFT based structure optimisations for all the complexes were performed at the B3LYP level using 6-31G (d,p) and LANL2DZ basis sets. TD-DFT based theoretical calculations were performed with the optimised structures to simulate the experimental absorption spectrum for all the complexes and hence the electronic transitions for the observed absorption peaks were assigned.

Preparation of polystyrene microplastic particles by solvent-dissolution-precipitation

The reliable characterisation of the physicochemical properties of micro-sized plastic particles requires quality reference materials for establishing, calibrating, and validating methods. Heterogeneity in particle size, shape and surface chemistry are important factors for reference materials for them to mimic environmental microplastics. This paper introduces a method for preparing model polystyrene micro and nano plastic reference materials using a solvent dissolution-precipitation approach. Polystyrene microplastic particles with mean particle sizes of 0.35, 15.7, 30.0 and 52.3 micron were produced using solvent precipitation under different synthesis conditions with the particle present in a well dispersed and partially dispersed system. The particle size can be controlled by reducing the initial polystyrene-cyclohexane concentration and adjusting the volume of methanol. At a fixed polystyrene-cyclohexane ratio, particles within the specified size range were consistently produced. Chemical analysis using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that synthesized microplastics maintain their chemical properties, aligning with the original composition of virgin polystyrene pellets. A similar conclusion was drawn after examining the surface chemistry of the virgin and synthesised microplastic particles using ATR-FTIR analysis. The polystyrene particles produced in this way may be of use as reference materials and might be of interest for toxicological studies.

An Integrated New Method for the Characterisation of Thickness Changes in Battery Active Materials during Cyclisation Under Pressure

Measuring thickness-changes in a battery stack (dilation) during cyclisation is paramount for the characterisation of chemo-mechanical properties of battery materials. A variety of approaches to achieve these measurements is available, either for measuring the whole stack or individual active materials. Another topic of great interest is the cyclisation of batteries under an applied pressure. These pressures range from a few kPa to hundreds of MPa. Especially the research of solid-state battery materials requires measurements of electrochemical properties under pressure.In light of this, characterising chemo-mechanical properties under an applied pressure is a natural demand. However, to the best of our knowledge, no commercially available integrated solution to measure the dilation in a battery stack under any significant amount of applied pressure has been reported yet.We therefore present a convenient and reproducible method to derive thickness changes of a whole cell stack under defined pressures during cycling. For that, the commercially available PAT-Cell-Force was used (Image 1, left). The PAT-Cell-Force allows the application of a force of up to 1500 N on a cell stack of a diameter of 18 mm. This translates to a pressure of up to ~6 MPa. Additionally, the PAT-Cell-Force is equipped with a strain gauge sensor, allowing the measurement of the force during the experiment. While cycling, periodic fluctuations in the force signal are observed that are correlated to the cell voltage (Image 1, right).Through technical modifications of the PAT-Cell-Force, the dilation of the cell-stack Δd has been derived from the amplitude of the force signal ΔF, reproducibly and in very good agreement to the expected values. This has been achieved for applied forces of up to F0 ~ 100 N, corresponding to Pressures of approximately P0 ~ 400 kPa. Tests for higher pressures are currently pending. Figure 1

Automated Characterization of Macroscale Tissue 3D Spatial Material Properties via Robotically-Directed Impedimetric Sensing

Here, we report a novel method for automated characterization of bulk tissue 3D spatial properties based on reverse engineering-driven non-planar tool path planning and robotically-directed sensing. The method incorporates information on object (e.g., tissue) and inspection tool (e.g., sensor) geometry for automated inspection of tissue mechanical and dielectric properties across macroscopic nonplanar domains as large as 44 cm <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{2}$</tex-math> </inline-formula> . The process avoids the need for manual sensor-tissue integration processes. The impact and the utility of the method were demonstrated by automated mapping of 3D spatial distributions of mechanical and dielectric properties of plant and animal tissues using multiple complementary impedimetric-based sensors of varying types and form factor, including rigid micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and flexible multi-functional fibers. Applications to automated characterization of food quality (e.g., type and age) are provided, including 3D spatial mapping of plant and animal tissue mechanical and dielectric property distributions. Ultimately, automated methods for 3D spatial inspection of plant and animal tissue properties are critical to agriculture, food processing, organ transplantation, and biomanufacturing industries. <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Note to Practitioners</i> —This article is motivated by the need for automating the inspection of soft 3D biological objects. Here, we present a method that generates 3D quality maps of tissue properties using several sensors. The proposed tool path planning program outputs a customized tissue-conforming path for inspection based on the topographical features of the tissue. Hence, this method enables high-throughput, spatially-resolved, minimally-invasive, and reliable inspection of soft 3D biological objects. Applications to inspection of food quality were provided using two impedimetric-based sensors. Practitioners can directly apply the framework to inspection of other tissue properties and soft objects. This work provides an advance in automated methods for inspection, and real-time monitoring of tissue 3D property distributions, which reduces the need for manual tissue handling and requirement for sensor-product interface prior to characterization. This work can be implemented in various biomanufacturing applications and industries, including food safety and quality control, tissue engineering, and organ transplantation, to ensure the quality and safety of macroscopic tissue-engineered medical and food products.

Ionised AGN outflows in the Goldfish galaxy: The illuminating and interacting red quasar eFEDSJ091157.4+014327 at z ∼ 0.6

Context. Evolutionary models suggest that the initial growth phases of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are dust-enshrouded and characterised by jet or wind outflows that should gradually clear the interstellar medium (ISM) in the host by heating and/or expelling the surrounding gas. eFEDSJ091157.4+014327 (z ∼ 0.6) was selected from X-ray samples of eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) for its characteristics: red colours, X-ray obscuration (NH = 2.7 × 1022 cm−2) and luminous (LX = 6.5 × 1044 erg s−1), similar to those expected in quasars with outflows. It hosts an ionised outflow as revealed by a broad [O III]λ5007 Å emission line in the SDSS integrated spectrum. For a proper characterisation of the outflow properties and their effects, we need spatially resolved information. Aims. We aim to explore the environment around the red quasar, morphology of the [O III] gas and characterise the kinematics, mass outflow rates and energetics within the system. Methods. We used spatially resolved spectroscopic data from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) with an average seeing of 0.6″ to construct flux, velocity and velocity dispersion maps. Thanks to the spatially resolved [O III]λ5007 Å emission detected, we provide insights into the morphology and kinematics of the ionised gas and better estimates of the outflow properties. Results. We find that the quasar is embedded in an interacting and merging system with three other galaxies ∼50 kpc from its nucleus. Spatially resolved kinematics reveal that the quasar has extended ionised outflows of up to 9.2−0.4+1.2 kpc with positive and negative velocities up to 1000 km s−1 and −1200 km s−1, respectively. The velocity dispersion (W80) ranges from 600–1800 km s−1. We associate the presence of high-velocity components with the outflow. The total mass outflow rate is estimated to be ∼10 M⊙ yr−1, a factor of ∼3–7 higher than the previous findings for the same target and kinetic power of 2 × 1042 erg s−1. Considering different AGN bolometric luminosities, the kinetic coupling efficiencies range from 0.01%–0.03% and the momentum boosts are ∼0.2. Conclusions. The kinetic coupling efficiency values are low, which indicates that the ionised outflow is not energetically relevant. These values don’t align with the theoretical predictions of both radiation-pressure-driven outflows and energy-conserving mechanisms. However, note that our results are based only on the ionised phase while theoretical predictions are multi-phase. Moreover, the mass loading factor of ∼5 is an indication that these outflows are more likely AGN-driven than star formation-driven.

Characterisation of human penile tissue properties using experimental testing combined with multi-target inverse finite element modelling

This paper presents an inverse finite element (FE) approach aimed at estimating multi-layered human penile tissues. The inverse FE approach integrates experimental force–displacement and boundary deformation data of penile tissues with a developed FE model and uses new experimental data on human penile tissue. The experimental study encompasses whole organ plate-compression tests and individual layer tensile and compression tests, providing comprehensive insights into the tissue's mechanical behaviour. The biomechanical characterisation of penile tissue is of crucial significance for understanding its mechanical behaviour under various physiological and pathological conditions. The FE model is constructed using the realistic geometry of the penile segment and appropriate constitutive models for each tissue layer to leverage the accuracy and consistency of the model. Through systematic variation of tissue parameters in the inverse FE algorithm, simulations achieve the best match with both force–displacement and deformed boundary results obtained from the whole organ plate-compression tests. Test results from individual tissue layers are also utilised to assess the estimated parameters. The proposed inverse FE approach allows for the estimation of penile tissue parameters with high precision and reliability, shedding light on the mechanical properties of this complex biological organ. This work has applications not only in urology but also for researchers in various disciplines of biomechanics. As a result, our study contributes to advancing the understanding of human penile tissue mechanics whilst the methodology could also be applied to a range of other soft biological tissues. Statement of significanceThis research uses a multi-target inverse finite element (FE) approach for estimating the material parameters of human penile tissues. By integrating experimental data and a realistic FE model, this study achieves high-precision constitutive model parameter estimation, offering key insights into penile tissue mechanics under various loading conditions. The significance of this work lies in the use of this inverse FE approach for fresh-frozen human penile tissues, to identify the mechanical properties and constitutive models for both segregated tunica albuginea and corpus cavernosum as well as intact penile tissue segments. The study's scientific impact lies in its advancement of the understanding of human urological tissue mechanics, impacting researchers and clinicians alike.

Runaway BN supergiant star HD 93840: Progenitor of an imminent core-collapse supernova above the Galactic plane

We present a quantitative spectral analysis of the extreme nitrogen-enhanced supergiant HD 93840 (BN1\,Ib) at an intermediate galactic latitude. Based on an optical high-resolution spectrum and complementary ultraviolet and infrared (spectro-)photometry, in addition to Gaia data, we carried out a full characterisation of the star's properties. We used both hydrostatic and unified (photosphere+wind) model atmospheres that account for deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium. A highly unusual surface CNO-mixing signature and a marked stellar overluminosity compared to the mass imply a binary channel for the star's past evolution. The kinematics shows that it has reached its current position above the Galactic plane as a runaway star, likely ejected by the supernova explosion of its former companion star. Its current bulk composition, with a notably increased mean molecular weight due to core He- and progressed shell H-burning, suggests an advanced evolutionary stage. It is poised to yield a rare core-collapse supernova of a blue supergiant about ten OB star population scale heights above the Galactic disk relatively soon, contributing to the metal enrichment of the circumgalactic medium.
