Systematic comparison of commercial devices for temporal characterization of few-cycle laser pulses in the 500-1000 nm spectral range

We compare multiple temporal pulse characterization techniques in three different pulse duration regimes from 15 fs to sub-5 fs, as there are no available standards yet for measuring such ultrashort pulses. To accomplish this, a versatile post-compression platform was developed, where the 100 fs near infrared pulses were post-compressed to the sub-two-cycle regime in a hybrid, three-stage configuration. After each stage, the duration of the compressed pulse was measured with the d-scan, TIPTOE and SRSI techniques and the retrieved temporal intensity profiles, spectrum and spectral phases were compared. Spectral homogeneity was also measured with an imaging spectrometer to understand the input coupling conditions of the temporal measurements. Our findings suggest that the different devices give similar results in terms of temporal intensity profile, however they are extremely sensitive to alignment and to beam quality, especially in the case of the shortest pulses. We address specific steps of measurement procedures, which paves the way towards the standardization of pulse characterization in the near future.

Generation of few-cycle laser pulses at 2 μm with passively stabilized carrier-envelope phase characterized by f-3f interferometry

We report on generation and characterization of few-cycle laser pulses with the central wavelength of 2 μm at repetition rate of 50 kHz. The source is based on noncollinear parametric amplification and difference frequency generation leading to passively stabilized carrier-envelope phase (CEP). CEP is characterized using f-3f technique based on spectral interference between the fundamental spectrum broadened via self-phase modulation and the third harmonics, which are both generated by tight focusing of the pulses to gallium gadolinium garnet (GGG) crystal. We demonstrate the capability of this technique for CEP measurement and long-term stabilization. Further we show that the pulses can be compressed to a duration of 1.7 optical cycles after spectral broadening in the GGG crystal.

Broad spectral range few-cycle laser pulses characterization by using a FASI device

Full characterization of few-cycle laser pulses is necessary in many applications. FROG is one of the most widely used full characterization techniques so far, and SRSI is another fresh one with attractive capacity. In this study, we develop a simple device FASI (frequency-resolved optical gating and self-referenced spectral interferometry), which combines the FROG and SRSI in a single device, and both of them are based on the third-order nonlinear effect of transient grating. It is compact with a size of 340 × 240 × 80 mm3. The device owns the advantages of the TG-SRSI method, which can characterize few-cycle pulses with broad spectral range from UV to mid-IR in single-shot mode for well compressed pulses. What’s more, for complex or large chirped pulses, it can also complete the characterization task by using the multi-shot TG-FROG mode. Two few-cycle pulses centered at 800 nm and 1800 nm have been characterized by using this device to verify its ability. It turned out that the proposed FASI device is a powerful tool for broad spectral range few-cycle laser pulses characterization.

Compact single-shot d-scan setup for the characterization of few-cycle laser pulses.

We present a compact implementation of the ultrashort pulse measurement technique based on dispersion scans (d-scan), allowing single-shot measurement of few-cycle pulses. The main novelty in our design, making our setup extremely compact and simple, is the use, after a prism, of a spherical mirror in an off-axis geometry. The intentionally introduced strong astigmatism makes it possible to image the output of the crystal in one direction while focusing it in the other direction, resulting in the output face of the prism being imaged into a line in the second-harmonic crystal. The technique is validated by comparing measured dispersion scans, retrieved spectral phases and temporal profiles of this single-shot system with standard d-scan results.

Time-domain ptychography of over-octave-spanning laser pulses in the single-cycle regime.

We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of time-domain ptychography for the characterization of few-cycle laser pulses. Our method enables zero-additional phase measurements of over-octave-spanning laser pulses in the single cycle regime. The spectral phase is recovered using a robust ptychography algorithm that requires no input apart from the measured data trace. In addition to numerical tests, we validate our new device experimentally by reconstructing the complex electric field of a 1.5 cycle laser pulse with a bandwidth spanning 490 to 1060nm. We further check the accuracy of our device by comparing the measured phases of octave-spanning chirped pulses to the known dispersion of fused silica glass.

In situ characterization of few-cycle laser pulses in transient absorption spectroscopy.

Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy has thus far been lacking the capability to simultaneously characterize the intense laser pulses at work within a time-resolved quantum-dynamics experiment. However, precise knowledge of these pulses is key to extracting quantitative information in strong-field highly nonlinear light-matter interactions. Here, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast metrology tool based on the time-delay-dependent phase shift imprinted on a strong-field-driven resonance. Since we analyze the signature of the laser pulse interacting with the absorbing spectroscopy target, the laser pulse duration and intensity are determined in situ. As we also show, this approach allows for the quantification of time-dependent bound-state dynamics in one and the same experiment. In the future, such experimental data will facilitate more precise tests of strong-field dynamics theories.

Spatiotemporal characterization of few-cycle laser pulses

In this paper we apply a broadband fiber optic coupler interferometer to the measurement of few-cycle laser pulses. Sub-8-fs pulses delivered by an ultrafast oscillator were characterized spatiotemporally using STARFISH, which is based on spatially resolved spectral interferometry. The reference pulse was measured with the d-scan technique. The pulses were focused by an off-axis parabolic mirror and were characterized at different transverse planes along the focusing region. The evolution of the retrieved pulses is analyzed, exhibiting small variations in the temporal (and spectral) amplitude and phase during propagation. Finally, the peak irradiance evolution is estimated from the integration of the spatiotemporal intensity.

Non-iterative characterization of few-cycle laser pulses using flat-top gates

We demonstrate a method for broadband laser pulse characterization based on a spectrally resolved cross-correlation with a narrowband flat-top gate pulse. Excellent phase-matching by collinear excitation in a microscope focus is exploited by degenerate four-wave mixing in a microscope slide. Direct group delay extraction of an octave spanning spectrum which is generated in a highly nonlinear fiber allows for spectral phase retrieval. The validity of the technique is supported by the comparison with an independent second-harmonic fringe-resolved autocorrelation measurement for an 11 fs laser pulse.
