Xenophobia within the Immigrants in the Netflix’s Squid Game Series

The study aims to find out about the types of xenophobia, and its realization as well as the justification of that matter which appears in some scenes by the characters of Netflix’s the Squid Game series. The analysis used descriptive qualitative as a method to meet the objectives of the study. The source of the data in this study is taken from episodes 1 to 6 of the Squid Game series aired on Netflix. Xenophobia which mostly happened to the immigrants found in the series due to the existence of the two immigrant characters. To analyze the data, the theory of types of xenophobia which proposed by Harris (2002). The isolation hypothesis is the most dominant type found in the study due to feeling isolated in most of the scenes just because they are immigrants and they feel like they have no right to mingle with the natives.

Being “outdoors” in a new country: associations between immigrant characteristics, outdoor recreation activities, and settlement satisfaction in Canada

ABSTRACT Many immigrants in Canada experience rapid mental health deterioration as they integrate into their host country. Participation in outdoor recreation, and natural environments at large, have been suggested as a health-promoting activity that facilitates immigrants’ adaptation, fostering mental health and wellbeing. We used cross-sectional data from the Canadian General Social Survey 2016 (n = 15,876) to explore the associations between immigrant characteristics (i.e. status, length of settlement, and migration programme), participation in outdoor recreation activities, and settlement satisfaction (operationalised as satisfaction with life in Canada and with the local environment). Our findings suggest that immigrants engage in significantly fewer outdoor activities, and settlement satisfaction varies according to the length of settlement and immigration programmes (i.e. refugees, family reunification and economic immigrants). Participation in outdoor recreation activities was associated with significantly higher levels of settlement satisfaction. Participation in a broader range of outdoor activities moderated the association between immigrant characteristics and satisfaction with the local environment. Our findings have implications for recreation professionals and settlement agencies.

The tone of the president's immigration rhetoric

AbstractWe examine the tone of the president's immigration policy speeches as a function of the political context, policy characteristics, and individual presidents in two ways. First, we describe the tone of the president's immigration rhetoric using DICTION software and its five global categories of tone. Second, we hypothesize that commonality and optimism, two categories of tone expressive of immigration policy, will co‐vary by political context, policy characteristics of immigration, and a president's approach to rhetoric. To test our expectations, we collected presidential mentions of immigration since 1953 from the Public Papers of the Presidents. Key variables, like the president's honeymoon and the post‐9/11 era, increase a president's commonality tone, and the president's approval ratings encourage greater optimism. Individual presidents also shape presidential rhetoric, indicating the importance of presidential style to immigration tone, especially for optimism. We conclude with implications of our work for the systematic study of presidential tone and the prospects for comprehensive immigration reform.

Being l'Autre: French-Canadian immigrants in contemporary children's literature

PurposeImmigration-themed children’s literature can be an important resource in the classroom, especially because some U.S. immigrant groups, including French-Canadians, have received limited curricular representation. Using the qualitative method of critical content analysis, this study aims to examine depictions of French-Canadian immigrants to the United States in contemporary children’s books.Design/methodology/approachPostcolonialism is employed as an analytical lens with special attention given to the ways immigrant characters are constructed as different from the dominant group (i.e., othering), how dominant group values are imposed on immigrant characters, and how immigrant characters resist othering and domination. Three books comprise the sample: “Charlotte Bakeman Has Her Say” by Mary Finger and illustrated by Kimberly Batti, “Other Bells for Us to Ring” by Robert Cormier, and “Red River Girl” by Norma Sommerdorf.FindingsThe findings reveal multiple instances in which French-Canadian immigrants are constructed as Other and few instances in which these characters resist this positioning, and these books reflect the real ways French-Canadians were perceived as subalterns during the mass migration from Québec to the United States between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Originality/valueThis study is significant because it examines portrayals of a substantial immigrant group that has been overlooked in the immigration history curriculum. This sample of children’s books may be used to teach children the complexities of immigration history and provide a more nuanced understanding of immigration during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Picaros and shapeshifters: the postcolonial picaresque style in GauZ’s Standing Heavy

I read GauZ’s Standing Heavy in connection with the postcolonial picaresque style, as GauZ’s Ivorian immigrant characters are robust survivors who see through the French system and criticize it through their anti-idealist viewpoints. This cynical view, often disclosed through roguish language, provides the author the possibility of expressing aggression toward the unfair system and highlighting the characters’ need to find their agency within its unequal structures. Meanwhile, the publisher’s marketing techniques and the author’s media appearances have contributed to the novel’s great success on the literary market; however, I argue that the novel’s success on the market should not diminish our understanding of its cultural criticism. Instead, the author himself may act as a shapeshifter in the competitive cultural marketplace, since his engagement in strategies of self-exotism exposes our sanctimonious need as readers to expect authenticity from African authors in Western contexts when they have to conform to Western codes.

[Purpose] This study aims to understand the characteristics of adult immigrants who aspire to enter or have entered higher education institutions in South Korea from a lifecourse perspective.
 [Methods] Through an online survey, we collected data from 407 adult immigrants residing across the nation, seeking to explore the intricate interplay of pre-migration and post-migration factors that shape their educational aspiration and access to higher education.
 [Results] Our analysis revealed that pre-migration factors, such as prior education and job experiences, played a significant role, as did post-migration factors like participation in Korean language education programs. Additionally, we found that post-migration life conditions, such as current household income, marital status, and nationality significantly influenced adult immigrants' access to higher education.
 [Conclusion] These findings highlight the importance of understanding adult immigrants' educational aspirations or access within the broader context of their own lifecourse trajectory. By adopting a lifecourse perspective, we shed light on the multifaceted nature of the factors that influence adult immigrants' pursuit of higher education in South Korea.

The Influence of immigration on breastfeeding: Results from the FinChildren survey

Abstract Background Breastfeeding (BF) is essential to health promotion, disease prevention, and diminishing health inequalities. Recent studies in the Nordic countries revealed suboptimal BF practices among immigrants. Our aim is, first time in Finland, to quantitatively examine breastfeeding practices and sociodemographic characteristics of immigrants in comparison with natives. Methods We use a nationwide FinChildren (2020) survey on parents with infants, focusing on Somali- (n = 29), Arabic- (n = 81) and Russian speaking (n = 181) parents and their infants. We compared them with native Finnish speakers (n = 7508) using logistic regression and adjusting for confounders. Results Somali/Arab mothers had lower educational level, had higher BMI, were younger in age, and had more often C-sections. Proportions of both exclusive and any breastfeeding at 4-5 months were lower among Somali/Arabic speaking mothers (14% and 97%, respectively) compared to native Finnish (39% and 99%, respectively) and to Russian speaking mothers (41% and 98%, respectively). The difference in proportions of any BF between groups was not statistically significant. In the regression models fitted, being a Somali/Arabic speaking mother alone increased the odds of non-exclusive BF at 4-5 months fourfold (aOR 0.23, 95% CI 0.07, 0.72). Over 30% of Somali/Arab mothers had planned to mix feed their infants during antenatal period. This was inversely associated with exclusive BF at 4-5 months (aOR 0.14, 95% CI 0.11, 0.18) in the adjusted model. Conclusions Both exclusive and any BF were more common amongst native Finnish and Russian speaking mothers compared with Somali/Arabic speaking mothers. This study suggests the need for culturally sensitive interventions to promote BF amongst immigrants from outside Europe and to minimise any health inequality resulted from it. Key messages • This study found suboptimal breastfeeding practices amongst immigrant groups from outside Europe. Hence, it emphasizes the need for future research to further examine this pattern. • Results of the present study emphasize the need for culturally sensitive breastfeeding interventions to prevent health inequalities in early nutrition.

Ethnic differences in reading and mathematical test performance in primary schools in England

ObjectivesThis study investigates ethnic differences in Key Stage 2 (KS2) reading and mathematical test scores among primary school pupils in state schools in England between 2007 and 2018. The aim is to assess the performance across ethnic categories and examine its evolution over the course of the study period.
 MethodsThe analysis uses data from the National Pupil Database combining ethnicity information from school censuses with KS2 attainment data. KS2 reading and mathematical tests are taken by Year 6 pupils aged 10 to 11. Mean test scores are compared across ethnic categories, while the method of relative distribution is employed to evaluate performance in each ethnic category relative to the White British across the entire distribution of test scores in 2007 and 2018.
 ResultsBetween 2007 and 2018, the reading and maths test scores of British Bangladeshi, Black African, and Pakistani pupils improved relative to the White British group. In 2018, British Bangladeshi and Black African pupils performed at a similar or slightly higher level compared to their White British peers. The advantage in test scores in the two higher performing categories, British Indian and Chinese, further increased. Attainment in the other White category remained similar to the White British group. The test scores for the Black Caribbean and Mixed White and Black Caribbean categories tended to be concentrated in the lower part of the distribution. In 2018, the proportion of mixed and non-White pupils remained largely constant throughout the reading test score distribution, while in maths, a higher proportion of mixed and non-White pupils were found among high achievers compared to other parts of the distribution.
 ConclusionFrom 2007 to 2018, KS2 test performance improved relative to the White British group for some ethnic categories, while it did not for others. This paper proposes potential explanations for these differences, which are related to the volume and characteristics of immigration to England. Further empirical testing is required in future research to substantiate these explanations.

COVID-19 vaccine equity: a retrospective population-based cohort study examining primary series and first booster coverage among persons with a history of immigration and other residents of Ontario, Canada.

Immigrants were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and experience unique vaccination barriers. In Canada (37 million people), 23% of the population is foreign-born. Immigrants constitute 60% of the country's racialized (non-white) population and over half of immigrants reside in Ontario, the country's most populous province. Ontario had several strategies aimed at improving vaccine equity including geographic targeting of vaccine supply and clinics, as well as numerous community-led efforts. Our objectives were to (1) compare primary series vaccine coverage after it was widely available, and first booster coverage 6 months after its availability, between immigrants and other Ontario residents and (2) identify subgroups experiencing low coverage. Using linked immigration and health administrative data, we conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study including all community-dwelling adults in Ontario, Canada as of January 1, 2021. We compared primary series (two-dose) vaccine coverage by September 2021, and first booster (three-dose) coverage by March 2022 among immigrants and other Ontarians, and across sociodemographic and immigration characteristics. We used multivariable log-binomial regression to estimate adjusted risk ratios (aRR). Of 11,844,221 adults, 22% were immigrants. By September 2021, 72.6% of immigrants received two doses (vs. 76.4%, other Ontarians) and by March 2022 46.1% received three doses (vs. 58.2%). Across characteristics, two-dose coverage was similar or slightly lower, while three-dose coverage was much lower, among immigrants compared to other Ontarians. Across neighborhood SARS-CoV-2 risk deciles, differences in two-dose coverage were smaller in higher risk deciles and larger in the lower risk deciles; with larger differences across all deciles for three-dose coverage. Compared to other Ontarians, immigrants from Central Africa had the lowest two-dose (aRR = 0.60 [95% CI 0.58-0.61]) and three-dose coverage (aRR = 0.36 [95% CI 0.34-0.37]) followed by Eastern Europeans and Caribbeans, while Southeast Asians were more likely to receive both doses. Compared to economic immigrants, resettled refugees and successful asylum-claimants had the lowest three-dose coverage (aRR = 0.68 [95% CI 0.68-0.68] and aRR = 0.78 [95% CI 0.77-0.78], respectively). Two dose coverage was more equitable than 3. Differences by immigrant region of birth were substantial. Community-engaged approaches should be re-invigorated to close gaps and promote the bivalent booster.

Changes in Perceptions of Border Security Influence Desired Levels of Immigration

Security concerns about immigration are on the rise. Many countries respond by fortifying their borders. Yet little is known about the influence of border security measures on perceived threat from immigration. Borders might facilitate group identities and spread fear of outsiders. In contrast, they might enhance citizens’ sense of security and control over immigration. We test these claims using survey experiments run on a quota sample of over 1000 Americans. The findings show that allocating more government resources to border security increases desired levels of immigration. This effect is likely driven by a sense of control over immigration, induced by border security measures even when the number or characteristics of immigrants remain unchanged. Our findings suggest that border controls, which are widely considered as symbols of closure and isolation, can increase public support for immigration.

COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake in Immigrant, Refugee, and Nonimmigrant Children and Adolescents in Ontario, Canada

COVID-19 vaccinations are recommended for minors. Surveys indicate lower vaccine acceptance by some immigrant and refugee groups. To identify characteristics in immigrant, refugee, and nonimmigrant minors associated with vaccination. This retrospective cohort study used linked, population-based demographic and health care data from Ontario, Canada, including all children aged 4 to 17 years registered for universal health insurance on January 1, 2021, across 2 distinct campaigns: for adolescents (ages 12-17 years), starting May 23, 2021, and for children (ages 5-11 years), starting November 25, 2021, through April 24, 2022. Data were analyzed from May 9 to August 2, 2022. Immigrant or refugee status and immigration characteristics (recency, category, region of origin, and generation). Outcomes of interest were crude rates of COVID-19 vaccination (defined as ≥1 vaccination for children and ≥2 vaccinations for adolescents) and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% CIs for vaccination, adjusted for clinical, sociodemographic, and health system factors. The total cohort included 2.2 million children and adolescents, with 1 098 749 children (mean [SD] age, 7.06 [2.00] years; 563 388 [51.3%] males) and 1 142 429 adolescents (mean [SD] age, 14.00 [1.99] years; 586 617 [51.3%] males). Among children, 53 090 (4.8%) were first-generation and 256 886 (23.4%) were second-generation immigrants or refugees; among adolescents, 104 975 (9.2%) were first-generation and 221 981 (19.4%) were second-generation immigrants or refugees, most being economic or family-class immigrants. Immigrants, particularly refugees, were more likely to live in neighborhoods with highest material deprivation (first-generation immigrants: 18.6% of children and 20.2% of adolescents; first-generation refugees: 46.4% of children and 46.3% of adolescents; nonimmigrants: 18.5% of children and 17.2% of adolescents) and COVID-19 risk (first-generation immigrants; 20.0% of children and 20.5% of adolescents; first-generation refugees: 9.4% of children and 12.6% of adolescents; nonimmigrants: 6.9% of children and 6.8% of adolescents). Vaccination rates (53.1% in children and 79.2% in adolescents) were negatively associated with material deprivation. In both age groups, odds for vaccination were higher in immigrants (children: aOR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.27-1.33; adolescents: aOR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.08-1.12) but lower in refugees (children: aOR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.33-0.36; adolescents: aOR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.84-0.91) compared with nonimmigrants. In immigrant- and refugee-only models stratified by generation, region of origin was associated with uptake, compared with the overall rate, with the lowest odds observed in immigrants and refugees from Eastern Europe (children: aOR, 0.40; 95% CI, 0.35-0.46; adolescents: aOR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.38-0.43) and Central Africa (children: aOR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.16-0.35; adolescents: aOR, 0.51,CI: 0.45-0.59) and the highest odds observed in immigrants and refugees from Southeast Asia (children: aOR, 2.68; 95% CI, 2.47-2.92; adolescents aOR, 4.42; 95% CI, 4.10-4.77). Adjusted odds of vaccination among immigrants and refugees from regions with lowest vaccine coverage were similar across generations. In this cohort study using a population-based sample in Canada, nonrefugee immigrants had higher vaccine coverage than nonimmigrants. Substantial heterogeneity by region of origin and lower vaccination coverage in refugees persisted across generations. These findings suggest that vaccine campaigns need precision public health approaches targeting specific barriers in identified, undervaccinated subgroups.

Mapping framework conditions for societal participation of immigrants - a cluster analysis of medium-sized cities in Germany

Immigrants, or people who are read as such, face unequal participation opportunities. This is mainly due to poor host country language skills, inexperience with and barriers within administrative processes. Especially in cities beyond metropolises, scepticism through inexperience regarding immigration reinforces inequality. Although immigration to smaller cities is increasing, studies regarding this remain scarce. The goal of this paper is to examine spatial-structural conditions of participation opportunities for immigrants in medium-sized cities (MSC) and thus develop a basis for further research to address the particular challenges for immigrants in MSC. Therefore, I question the spatial patterns and characteristics of immigrants’ participation opportunities in MSC. Cluster analysis and mapping methods are used to analyse data relevant to societal participation at the municipal level with reference to immigration. The data refer to MSC in Germany, a country that plays a significant role for immigration in Europe. Six clusters with different levels of participation opportunities emerge. One of the main results are the regional disparities between the former FRG (West Germany) and the former GDR (East Germany) expected under hypothesis 1. Almost all MSC in the former GDR can be assigned to the cluster with the greatest challenges for immigrants’ participation. At the same time, according to hypothesis 2, other regional differences can be identified, which are manifested by political-administrative boundaries, but also extend beyond them. Rural areas do not necessarily offer worse conditions for immigrants’ participation than dense regions. However, the mapping shows two participation ‘belts’ in the southwest between the large cities Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart and in the central northwest between the Ruhr region and Hanover. The two belts contain a large number of strong MSC with good framework conditions for immigrant’s participation. Especially in the ‘arrival’ belt between Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart it covers MSC of widely varying sizes. Hypothesis 3 illustrates how local peculiarities also in the former GDR allow contrary developments and show the importance of further research.

Integration challenges, immigrant characteristics and career satisfaction for immigrants in the field of accounting and finance: An empirical evidence from Canada

Although immigrants are subject to structural and cultural vulnerability, little attention has been devoted to understanding the integration challenges they face in building a career in accounting and finance. This study investigates those challenges and addresses how such challenges and immigrant characteristics influence career satisfaction. The study draws on the life course perspective to survey Canadian immigrants. It finds that the integration challenges are multidimensional, comprising workplace discrimination, non-recognition of foreign education and experience, and ethnic differences, where the devaluation of prior education and experience is the worst challenge for new Canadian immigrants. Further, workplace discrimination and devalued education and experience negatively influence career satisfaction. However, ethnic differences exert no significant effect on career satisfaction. Evidently, this study is the first to measure dimensions of immigrant integration challenges and how they relate to career satisfaction. The identified challenges and suggestions may be of benefit to enterprises, government institutions, and professional bodies that aim to improve inclusion, equity, and career outcomes.

This study focuses on comic ethnic caricatures in Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) and argues that the construction and deconstruction of these caricatures transcend the concept of identity. Kureishi’s novel narrates four years in the life of Karim, who is born to an Indian father and an English mother. Karim’s identity conflict due to his mixed racial background prevents him from fitting in the British society. The novel revolves around Karim’s and other immigrant characters’ identity conflicts in the tense political and social climate of 1970s Britain. As the novel is narrated from Karim’s perspective, his humorous perspective of the world produces comic characters, which are particularly caricatured versions of ethnic identities. This study argues that the shifting direction of humour generated by the construction and deconstruction of comic ethnic caricatures exposes the transnational sensibility of ethnic identities in The Buddha of Suburbia.

Immigration, transformation, and emission control of sulfur and nitrogen during gasification of MSW: Fundamental and engineering review

This paper proposes a comprehensive summary and analysis of an important issue during municipal solid waste (MSW) gasification-sulfur and nitrogen pollution. It provides an overview of the fundamentals of MSW and the basic aspects of nitrogen and sulfur elements. Their characteristics of immigration, transformation and distribution during gasification with control solutions in realized or potential engineering are also concluded. The analysis indicates that the complete scenario of the occurrence form of sulfur and nitrogen elements in MSW is difficult to obtain, owing to the diverse sources and complicated compositions. However, with the assistance of advanced characterization and quantification methods (XPS, XRD, TG-FTIR, et al.), the common sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds in both organic and inorganic states can be detected. Adjustment of gasification conditions can regulate the transformation of these elements for emission control. The multiple pollutants including H2S, SOx, COS, NH3, HCN and NOx cannot be eliminated by one-step treatment but a combination of adsorption and catalytic treatments may realize the control goal. This research aims to benefit meeting emission standards during MSW gasification and to provide a reference for other processes such as incineration, pyrolysis and other feedstocks like biomass and refuse derived fuel (RDF).

Mental health and neurocognitive disorder–related hospitalization rates in immigrants and Canadian-born population: a linkage study

ObjectivesMental health and neurocognitive conditions are important causes of hospitalization among immigrants, though patterns may vary by immigrant category, world region of origin, and time since arrival in Canada. This study uses linked administrative data to explore differences in mental health hospitalization rates between immigrants and individuals born in Canada.MethodsHospital records from the Discharge Database and the Ontario Mental Health Reporting System for 2011 to 2017 were linked to the 2016 Longitudinal Immigrant Database and to Statistics Canada’s 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort. Age-standardized hospitalization rates for mental health–related conditions (ASHR-MHs) were derived for immigrants and the Canadian-born population. ASHR-MHs overall and for leading mental health conditions were compared between immigrants and the Canadian-born population, stratified by sex and selected immigration characteristics. Quebec hospitalization data were not available.ResultsOverall, immigrants had lower ASHR-MHs compared to the Canadian-born population. Mood disorders were leading causes of mental health hospitalization for both cohorts. Psychotic, substance-related, and neurocognitive disorders were also leading causes of mental health hospitalization, although there was variation in their relative importance between subgroups. Among immigrants, ASHR-MHs were higher among refugees and lower among economic immigrants, those from East Asia, and those who arrived in Canada most recently.ConclusionDifferences in hospitalization rates among immigrants from various immigration streams and world regions, particularly for specific types of mental health conditions, highlight the importance of future research that incorporates both inpatient and outpatient mental health services to further understand these relationships.

Wages of UK immigrant men across generations: who catches up?

Abstract This article examines UK immigrant-native wage differentials for men across major first- and second-generation immigrant groups with the UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS) pooling cross-sections over the years 2009–19. I find that first-generation immigrants with UK human capital experience less of a wage disadvantage than their immigrant counterparts with foreign language proficiency, qualifications, and work experience. Conditional on the heterogeneity in these productivity characteristics of first-generation immigrants, I observe no intergenerational economic progress across the two generations relative to UK natives. Using a conditional decomposition shows that UK work experience and not the source country of study for the qualification is a key factor in reducing first-generation, immigrant-native wage differentials in the UK.

Teaching Wife’s Language to the Children of International Marriage Couples in South Korea

This study examines the social factors and bilingual education for the children of international couples in South Korea. Previous studies identified two negative factors for bilingual education based on destination and immigrant characteristics: resistance from local spouses and the immigrants’ need for assimilation. We further develop the concept of global language status, which may moderate these effects. Using the 2015 Korean Multicultural Family Survey, we conduct regression analyses to test the two factors based on the origin country of immigrant wives. The findings show that the global language status is a meaningful factor that impacts the direction of the local resistance and assimilation effects. Korean husbands’ decision-making power on children’s education is significantly associated with a decrease in bilingual education. Korean language proficiency and citizenship as markers of assimilation also affect bilingual education, but they show a decrease for Chinese wives but an increase for Southeast Asian wives.

Digital Ethnic Enclaves: Mate Preferences and Platform Choices Among Chinese Immigrant Online Daters in Vancouver

In light of the growing racialized immigrant population in Canada and advances in dating technologies, this study examines Chinese immigrants' partner preferences and mate selection processes through the lens of online dating. We draw on in-depth interviews with 31 Chinese immigrants who have used online dating services in Metro Vancouver to search for different-sex partners. Chinese immigrant online daters show strong preferences for dating Chinese. They emphasize permanent residency status and similarity in age at arrival when evaluating potential partners. Given their preferences, Chinese immigrants strategically choose the dating platforms they primarily use. Men exhibit higher selectivity in their preferences and choices of platforms. Notably, platforms catering to Chinese users create "digital ethnic enclaves" where Chinese immigrant daters congregate. The findings illuminate the intersection of race, gender, immigrant status, and age at arrival in shaping divergent experiences of mate selection and immigrant assimilation in the digital era.

Educational immigration is a specific category of migration, the role of which has been constantly growing in recent decades both in Russia and all over the world. In our country, due to the growing demographic crisis in most regions, educational immigration can become a way to mitigate unfavorable demographic processes. In this regard, it is important to understand the real geography of the immigration educational flow at various spatial levels. This specific category of migrations has its own spatial patterns, so it is necessary to realize an integrated approach to the study of student immigration, which allows to consolidate a wide set of statistical data from various sources of information, at various spatial levels, all over the world in general and in specific universities, conducting spatial analysis, modeling and visualizing the processes under study, atlas information systems allow to implement this request (AIS). The study presents the stages of preparation of the AIS “Foreign Students in Russia” including the development of the structure, the choice of software, the preparation of a spatial database, the choice of mapping methods, the development of a set of cartographic and visual models, the integration of the system into the web environment. The AIS implements the principle of multi-scale and it is prepared at 4 spatial levels: “Global”, reflecting the position of Russia in the world market of educational services; “Country”, containing indicators for Russia as a whole; “Regional”, which reflects the regional characteristics of student immigration; “Local”, which analyzes the nature of student immigration in universities of cities. Each section contains relevant materials based on student immigration, which allows to analyze the spatial features of students’ immigration processes in Russia and the capabilities of AIS as a visualization tool significantly increase the level of analytics and managerial decision-making if we consider the immigration policy not only of regions but also of universities in general.
