Evaluation of heavy metal speciation distribution in soil and the accumulation characteristics in wild plants: A study on naturally aged abandoned farmland adjacent to tailings

Heavy metal composite pollution is widespread in the surrounding environment of tailings ponds in arid and semi-arid regions, leading to the abandonment of substantial agricultural land. This study investigates the speciation distribution and plant accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in abandoned farmland with different durations of natural aging. The aim is to comprehend the local heavy metal behavior pattern in the soil-plant system and offer insights for environmental remediation. Our findings reveal that Cd stands out as the primary heavy metal pollutant in this area. The mobility ranking of heavy metals is Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu, with Cd and Pb mobility decreasing along the basin. Notably, active Pb exhibits a higher affinity for soil binding compared to other metals. The predominant plant species in the region are primarily small shrubs, herbaceous plants, and semi-shrubs that demonstrate tolerance to drought and salt. Most plant samples showed elevated levels of Cd, Pb, and Zn, surpassing the maximum tolerance levels for dietary minerals in livestock. This elevated metal content poses potential threats to the health of local livestock and wildlife, yet it is also considered a potential for phytoremediation. Selected dominant plant species from the current study include Kalidium foliatum & gracile which shows potential as a Cd accumulator and indicator. Neotrinia splendens and Reaumuria songarica demonstrate potential as Cd excluders, with the latter exhibiting higher tolerance to Cd (62.9 mg/kg). Additionally, our observations indicate that different plant parts exhibit distinct responses to heavy metals, and Zn synergistically influences the aerial part accumulation of Cd.This study holds significant importance in understanding the complex behavior patterns of multi-metal pollutants in the natural environment. The identification of native plants with remediation potential is valuable for phytoremediation of environment pollution in mining area.

Ecological Risk Assessment and Migration and Accumulation Characteristics of Heavy Metals in Farmland Soil-crop System from Typical Pyrite Mining Area

To evaluate the ecological risk of heavy metals in the soil-crop system in the superimposed high background and human activities from pyrite mining, the heavy metal contents and chemical speciation in soil and crop samples were analyzed, and these data were used to assess the potential ecological risk and factors affecting the migration ability of heavy metals using bioconcentration factors(BCF), potential ecological risk index(RI), risk assessment code(RAC), and correlation analysis. The results indicate that the average Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations exceeded the background values of soils in Zhejiang Province and China. Cd had the greatest potential ecological harm, followed by that of Hg. The bioactive components and potential bioactive components of Cd accounted for 46% and 33%, respectively, indicating relatively high bioavailability. Cu and Pb were mainly in potential bioactive components accounting for 60% and 73%, respectively. The As, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Zn were predominantly residual and accounted for >60%, which indicated low biological activity. The RAC levels were in the following order:Cd>Zn>Cu>Pb>Ni>As>Cr>Hg; soil Cd had the highest ecological risk, mainly with high and extremely high levels, whereas other elements had no risk or low risk. Compared with Cd content in soil, only eight rice samples had Cd contents exceeding the safety limit, and sweet potato samples did not exceed the standard. The migration and enrichment capability of rice in order from strong to weak was s follows:Cd>Zn>Cu>Hg>As>Ni>Cr>Pb; the bioactive component of Cd played a significant role in promoting Cd absorption by rice. Soil OM had a bi-directional effect on Cd bioavailability, whereas soil texture had an indirect effect. This comprehensive study shows that the total amount of heavy metals in soil, chemical speciation, biological activities, absorption, and enrichment of heavy metals by crops should be taken into consideration when assessing the ecological risks in the superimposed areas affected by high background and human activities, such as the pyrite mining area.

Strategy matters: Phytoremediation potential of native halophytes is jointly associated with their distinct salt tolerances

Halophytes are effective candidates for phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated saline soils. Still, little is known about the relationships between their potential for metal enrichment and salt-tolerance strategies. This study comprehensively investigated the plant community and concentrations and accumulation characteristics of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in the soil and dominant native plants with different salt-tolerance strategy groups, namely salt-dilution (SD), salt-excretion (SE), salt-exclusion (SC), and non-halophyte, in a semiarid region of Northwest China. The results showed that the soil in this area was primarily polluted by As and Cd, which were 5.80 and 21.18 times higher than the corresponding background values, respectively. The primary vegetation was desert steppe, and 95 species of 34 families were investigated, most of which were herbaceous (64.2%) with the Asteraceae dominating. Eleven of the thirteen dominant plants, except Zea mays and Helianthus annuus, were halophytes with distinct salt tolerances, exhibiting differing metal accumulation and transport capacities. All the bioconcentration factors of the selected species for six metals were lower than 1, and their accumulation ability decreased in the order of Cu (0.466) > Cr (0.315) ≈ Cd (0.093) ≈ Zn (0.082) ≈ As (0.076) > Pb (0.049). Salt-tolerance strategies were significantly correlated with As and Cd accumulations in the soil-plant environment, but in diametrically opposite directions. Also, metal accumulations and translocations partly depended on plant salt resistance strategies. Salt-diluting halophytes such as Suaeda glauca and Kochia scoparia seem applicable for phytoextraction of single or mixed metal pollution, particularly Cd. In comparison, salt-excreting halophytes such as Chenopodium glaucum and Salsola collina would be more suited to As phytostabilization due to the potential for second pollution. In conclusion, SD halophytes could be used in various metal-contaminated soils in salt-affected regions, while SE halophytes would be well suited for phytostabilization. This study would enhance the exploitation advantages of halophyte germplasms with different salt tolerances in multiple-stressed environments.

Heavy metal content and microbial characteristics of soil plant system in Dabaoshan mining area, Guangdong Province.

The disordered mining of Dabaoshan lead-zinc mineral resources in Shaoguan has brought serious harm to the regional ecological environment. In order to investigate the heavy metal pollution status and microbial characteristics of soil plant system in mining area, The distribution of heavy metals in the soil, the activity of soil microorganisms and the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in the dominant plant Miscanthus floridulus were studied. The results indicated that metal element contents of Miscanthus floridulus in sequence were: Zn>Pb>Cu> Cd. This study demonstrated that the elemental content of the Miscanthus floridulus plant showed Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd, with Zn being the most significantly correlated with soil elements, followed by Pb. Compared with the control group, the Miscanthus floridulus-soil system possessed obviously different soil microbial features: intensiver in microbial basal respiration strength, and higher microbial eco-physiological parameters Cmic/Corg and qCO2, but lower in soil microbial biomass. The results showed the soil enzymatic activities decreased significantly with increase of contamination of heavy metals, especially dehydrogenase and urease activities. With the increase of the content of heavy metals in the mining area soil, the intensity of soil biochemical action in the mining area (Q1, Q2) soil decreased significantly, and the biochemical action showed a significant negative correlation with the content of heavy metals in the soil. Compared with the non mining area (Q8) soil, the intensity of soil ammonification, nitrification, N fixation and cellulose decomposition decreased by 43.2%~71.1%, 70.1%~92.1%, 58.7%~87.8% and 55.3%~79.8% respectively. The decrease of soil microbial activity weakened the circulation rate and energy flow of C and N nutrients in the soil of the mining area.

Dynamic characteristics of heavy metal accumulation in agricultural soils after continuous organic fertilizer application: Field-scale monitoring

Manure has been considered as a source of soil heavy metal (HM) pollution. However, the long-term impact of manure application on soil HM accumulation have not been well studied. This study tracked the long-term cumulative trends of soil copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in three soil-crop systems over 5–8 years’ application of commercial manure fertilizer. The contribution of different fertilization treatments (CF, chemical fertilizer; T1-T3, manure with different application dosages) to soil HMs pollution risk were assessed. There are accumulating tendencies for Cu, Zn, and Pb in paddy fields, Cu and As in orchard fields, and Zn, As, and Pb in vegetable fields, while the concentrations of As in paddy fields and Zn in orchard fields decreased over time. Manure application significantly influenced the accumulation of Cu, Zn, and As in soils rather than that of Pb. The modeling prediction subsequently revealed that the time required to reach the risk screening values (Cu: 50 mg kg−1; Zn: 200 mg kg−1) for HM content in paddy soil, according to GB15618-2018, decreased from 18.20 years to 7.20 years due to the introduction of Cu and Zn via manure use. Recommend annual manure application dosage was 7.73 t hm−2 y−1 to ensure a 20-year period of clean production in paddy soils, while it was 26.15 t hm−2 y−1 in the orchard soil and 16.23 t hm−2 y−1 in vegetable soil to ensure a 50-year period of clean production, respectively. Overall, the impacts of HMs input by manure application on soil HMs accumulation varied depending on the type of metal and the soil-crop system. The cumulative trends of HMs in soils play a crucial role in determining whether the input of HMs through manure application can lead to the risk of HM pollution.

Accumulation Characteristics of Heavy Metals in American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) and Changes in Their Contents after Soaking the Plants

Understanding the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in the growth process of American ginseng can provide theoretical support for its safe production. In this study, the content of Cu, Mn, As, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni in American ginseng (annual, biennial, and triennial) and planting soil were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LCP-MS). In addition, the change in the content of these heavy metals in American ginseng was evaluated after soaking the plant for various time periods. The results indicated that the content of some heavy metals in American ginseng was correlated with soil heavy metal contents. For example, Ni, Cd, and Mn content in American ginseng was significantly negatively correlated with Ni content in soil. American ginseng exhibited distinct heavy metal accumulation characteristics in different parts at different growth stages. For example, in annual American ginseng, Mn and As are mainly enriched in lateral roots and taproots, while in biennial and triennial American ginseng, they are mainly enriched in reed heads. When American ginseng plant was soaked for various time intervals, its heavy metal content changed to varying degrees. In general, after soaking American ginseng for 30 min, the content of most heavy metals decreased.

Current Situation of Agricultural Soil Pollution in Jiangsu Province: A Meta-Analysis

In recent years, heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils in Jiangsu Province has attracted more and more attention. However, most studies have been characterized by their small scale, few samples, and short-term monitoring. The overall status and temporal accumulation characteristics of heavy metals have not been fully reflected. Therefore, this paper attempted to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current status of heavy metals and provide accurate information for soil pollution management in Jiangsu Province. This paper collected available data in the literature (1993–2021) on heavy metal-polluted agricultural soils in Jiangsu Province. Based on these available data, the weighted mean values of each heavy metal were obtained by meta-analysis. Then, the ecological risks in soils were evaluated and spatiotemporal variations in the accumulation of heavy metals were explored. In addition, suggestions for pollution prevention and control were made by predicting future heavy metal concentrations. The results showed that Cd and Hg were the major polluting elements in Jiangsu Province. The spatial enrichment of heavy metals followed the pattern of southern > northern > central. Heavy metal concentrations in Nanjing, Suzhou, and Xuzhou should be paid special attention. The ecological risk level of heavy metals in agricultural soils in Jiangsu Province was high, predominantly contributed by Hg and Cd. The accumulation of most heavy metals gradually decreased after 2010, while the opposite happened with Cd. Jiangsu Province should continue to take active pollution control measures in order to maintain the decreasing trend of heavy metal concentrations in farmland soils. This study could provide a scientific and theoretical basis for the development of pollution control and soil remediation measures.

Component Properties and Heavy Metal Accumulation Characteristics of Contaminated Rice Straw Biochar During Oxygen-controlled Pyrolysis

Pyrolysis is an important technology to achieve the harmlessness and recycling of contaminated biomass. In this study, the effects of oxygen-controlled atmosphere on the component properties and heavy metal accumulation characteristics of contaminated rice straw biochar were studied. The results showed that low-oxygen pyrolysis could effectively produce biochar using contaminated rice straw and improve the stability of heavy metals in biochar. Under the nitrogen atmosphere, the yield of rice straw biochar was 29.4%-34.9%. The aromatization index (SUVA254) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) increased first and then decreased with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, whereas the fluorescent components were mainly humic-like acid substances. Meanwhile, Ca mainly existed in the form of CaCO3 in biochar. Compared with the pure nitrogen condition, the biochar yield was reduced by 5.6%-13.5% and 14.9%-15.7% under the pyrolysis atmosphere containing 10% and 20% oxygen content, respectively. Ca existed in the form of CaO in biochar, which increased the pH value of the biochar by more than 0.5 units. The oxygen of the pyrolysis atmosphere accelerated the degradation of the lignin component, resulting in the gradual decrease in SUVA254 of DOM. With the increase in oxygen content in the pyrolysis atmosphere, humic-like acid substances in DOM were transformed into fulvic-like acid substances. Under the conditions of 400℃ and a 10% oxygen-containing atmosphere, the exchangeable fractions of Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni, and As in biochar were decreased by 5.2%, 3.7%, 1.7%, 0.8%, and 0.7%, respectively, indicating that heavy metals are transformed into more stable states. The results suggested that the higher biochar yield and heavy metal stability could be obtained by introducing a proper amount of nitrogen into the air (controlling the oxygen content of approximately 10%) for pyrolysis treatment of contaminated rice straw, providing an economic and feasible technology for the achievement of harmlessness and recovery of contaminated rice straw.

Accumulation Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Soil-Crop System Based on Soil Parent Material Zoning

This study used both the element occurrence form analysis and the chronic health risk assessment method to investigate the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in the soil-crop system and the health risk assessment of agricultural products in northeastern Yunnan, which is a typical area of Southwest China where heavy metals are enriched in soil. Based on the study of 1137 groups of agricultural products and corresponding root soils, the results showed that the soil cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the lead-zinc ore concentration area were higher than the risk-intervention values of the "Soil Environmental Quality Risk control standard for soil contamination of agricultural land" (GB 15618-2018), whereas the soil Cd in the other parent material areas was within the screening-intervention buffer zone, and Pb was below the minimum risk-screening value. According to the National Food Safety Standard of China (GB 2762-2017), the heavy metal Cd in potatoes and soybeans in the area seriously exceeded the standard, the heavy metal Pb in tartary buckwheat and walnut exceeded the limit value, and the exceeding rate of heavy metal Cd in crops from these parent material areas showed: clastic rock>basalt>lead-zinc ore>carbonate ≈ Quaternary sedimentary>sand (mud) rock. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's assessment method for the chronic health risk of heavy metal intake by humans, the grains and potatoes, staple foods, and fruits had low chronic health risks of heavy metal intake. Agricultural products from the parent material area of clastic rock, sand (mud) rock, Quaternary sedimentary, and lead-zinc ore concentration showed health risks; with the change in soil physical and chemical properties and the increase in the types of edible crops, the risk will gradually increase. Based on this research, it is urgent to carry out real-time monitoring of agricultural products in the area.

Characteristics of heavy metal accumulation and risk assessment in understory Panax notoginseng planting system.

Yunnan Province is the main planting area of the precious Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) Panax notoginseng; however, it locates the geological area with high soil heavy metals in China. The frequent land replacement due to continuous cropping obstacles and excessive application of chemicals makes P. notoginseng prone to be contaminated by heavy metals under the farmland P. notoginseng (FPn) planting. To overcome farmland shortage, understory P. notoginseng (UPn) was developed as a new ecological planting model featured by no chemicals input. However, this newly developed planting system requires urgently the soil-plant heavy metal characteristics and risk assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the pollution status of eight heavy metals in the tillage layer (0-20cm), subsoil layer (20-40cm) and the plants of UPn in Lancang County, Yunnan Province. Pollution index (Pi) showed that the contamination degree of heavy metals in the tillage layer and subsoil layer was Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Zn > Cr > Hg > As and Pb > Cd > Cu > Ni > Cr > Hg > Zn > As, respectively. Potential ecological risk index (PERI) for the tillage layer and subsoil layer was slight and middle, respectively. The exceeding standard rate of Cd, As, Pb, Hg, Cu in the UPn roots was 5.33%, 5.33%, 13.33%, 26.67% and 1.33%, respectively, while only Cd and Hg in the UPn leaves exceeded the standard 10% and 14%, respectively. The enrichment abilities of Cd and Hg in the roots and leaves of UPn were the strongest, while that of Pb was the weakest. The Hazard index (HI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) of eight heavy metals in the roots and leaves of UPn were less than 1.Therefore, our results prove that Upn has no human health risk and provide a scientific basis for the safety evaluation and extension of UPn.

Effects of Unconventional Water Agricultural Utilization on the Heavy Metals Accumulation in Typical Black Clay Soil around the Metallic Ore

Unconventional water is an important water resource for agricultural utilization in the drought and water shortage of Northeast China. Additionally, exploration in making full use of it is an important way to alleviate water shortage in China. This paper analyzed the effects of unconventional water through field trials on the accumulation of heavy metals in both cucumbers and the typical black clay soil (expressed as black soil) around the Anshan metallic ore. By exploring the effects of unconventional water after secondary treatment on the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in cucumbers and the heavy metal balance in the soil–crop system under different conditions, the study shows that there are no significant differences in the heavy metal content when the quantity of unconventional water for irrigation varies. Unconventional water for short-term irrigation does not cause pollution to either the soil environment or the crops. Nor will it cause the accumulation of heavy metals, and the index for the heavy metal content is far below the critical value of the trade standard and national standard, which indicates that the crops irrigated with unconventional water during their growth turn out to be free of pollutants. Unconventional water brings less heavy metals into the black soil than crops. The input and output quantities have only small effects on the heavy metal balance in the black soil. This paper provides a reference for the safety control and evaluation of unconventional agricultural utilization.

A meta-analysis about the accumulation of heavy metals uptake by Sedum alfredii and Sedum plumbizincicola in contaminated soil

Sedum alfredii and Sedum plumbizincicola typically have high heavy metal (such as Zn and Cd) accumulation capacities with fast growth rates and relatively high Pb tolerance in contaminated soils. We compared the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in Sedum species through meta-analysis. Furthermore, we analyzed the effects of soil organic matter (SOM) and soil pH on Cd, Pb and Zn accumulation by S. alfredii and S. plumbizincicola and the correlation between various metals. Results showed that the accumulations of Cd and Zn in shoots were higher than that of roots, but Pb accumulated in roots more than shoots. Moreover, there is a significant positive correlation between the accumulation of Zn and Cd in shoots. We found that the heavy metal accumulation rate in shoots was higher with lower soil pH. Sedum species had the highest Cd adsorption capacity in 20–30 g/kg SOM and the highest Zn adsorption capacity in SOM less than 20 g/kg. The accumulation rate of Cd in shoots of S. plumbizincicola was increased with exposure time, while the accumulation rate of Zn was slightly decreased.

Heavy metal accumulation characteristics and physiological response of Sabina chinensis and Platycladus orientalis to atmospheric pollution

Heavy metal (Cu, Mn, Zn, Pb, and Cd) concentrations were measured in the leaves of Sabina chinensis and Platycladus orientalis collected from urban, suburban, and rural sites in Tianjin, China. Photosynthetic pigment contents, reactive oxygen species content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and antioxidant enzyme activity were investigated, providing physiological response parameters. Our comparison of the sites revealed that urbanization significantly influenced the heavy metal concentrations in both plant leaves. At the rural site, both plant leaves exhibited the lowest heavy metal accumulation. The highest Cu, Mn, and Zn concentrations were found in S. chinensis leaves from the urban site; the highest Pb and Cd concentrations were found in P. orientalis leaves from the urban site. These results indicate that the urban site contained larger heavy metal concentrations in the plant leaves that may reflect the anthropogenic emission gradient. It is also found that S. chinensis may be used to monitor airborne heavy metal pollution because it is highly quick response to heavy metals, while P. orientalis may be used for mitigation due to its high resistance. The results of this study can contribute to the development of monitoring and environmental management plans by providing information on sensitive and resistant tree species for city greening in North China.

Characteristics of heavy metal accumulation in five wild plants in Huize Lead-Zinc mining area

In order to screen out the plants used to repair heavy metal pollution in the soil, five plants and surface soil were collected in the Huize lead-zinc mine area, centered on the hyperaccumulator plant Arabis alpina L. var. parviflora Franch, measured the heavy metal content of in shoot and root of plant and surface soil, and analyzed the characteristics of heavy metal accumulation in plants. The results showed that the soil Cd pollution in the Huize lead-zinc mining area was the most serious; among the five plants, the Cd bioconcentration factor(BCF) and translocation factor(TF) of A. alpina were more than 1, and the TF of Pb was more than 1; the TF of Anaphalis margaritacea, Cyananthus inflatus and Arenaria orbiculata to Cu and Zn were more than 1, the TF of Juncus effusus to Cd and Zn were more than 1. These five plants had good tolerance to heavy metals and were of great significance to the remediation and restoration of heavy metal contaminated soil in lead-zinc mining areas.

Heavy metals in different moss species in alpine ecosystems of Mountain Gongga, China: Geochemical characteristics and controlling factors.

Terrestrial mosses are promising tracers for research concerning metal atmospheric deposition and pollution. Concentrations of Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, and Pb in different moss species from Mountain Gongga, China were analyzed to investigate the effects of growth substrates, geographic elevation, and type of moss species on the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals, as well as to identify heavy metal sources. The ability of heavy metals to accumulate in moss varied significantly, with low concentrations of Cd and Co; medium concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Pb; and high concentrations of Zn, Sr, and Ba. Elevation significantly influenced the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals, with high concentrations found at lower elevations due to proximal pollution. Growth substrate and moss species were found to have certain influence on the bioconcentration capacities of heavy metals in moss in this study. Correlation analysis showed similar sources for Sr, Zn, and Ba, as well as for Ni, Co, and Cr. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was consistent with atmospheric deposition of Pb and Cd; substrate sources of Cr, Co, and Ni; and anthropogenic sources of Ba, Sr, and Zn. This research characterized the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals and their influence factors in different mosses found in alpine ecosystems and provides a reference for future studies in similar areas.

Preliminary study on Cd accumulation characteristics in Sansevieria trifasciata Prain

Phytoremediation techniques to clean heavy metal pollution soil depend on identifying plant species that can act as phytoremediators. One important approach to screening potential phytoremediators is to evaluate characteristics of heavy metal accumulation. In this study, we performed firsthand analysis of Cd tolerance and accumulation characteristics of three Sansevieria trifasciata cultivars by pot experiment. Plant growth results showed that all three S. trifasciata cultivars can tolerate 50 mg kg−1 soil Cd concentration. After growth under 50 mg kg−1 soil Cd concentration for 4 months, the Cd bioconcentration factors in the shoots of S. ‘Trifasciata’, S. trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, and S. trifasciata ‘Silver Hahnii’ were 1.26, 1.30, and 1.19, while those in the roots were 12.53, 11.43, and 5.45, respectively. This result reveals the considerably low translocation factors of 0.10, 0.12, and 0.22 for S. ‘Trifasciata’, S. trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, and S. trifasciata ‘Silver Hahnii’, respectively. These results suggest that all three S. trifasciata cultivars had high Cd absorption capacities but low Cd translocation capacities. In combination with total Cd accumulation distribution and plant growth characteristics, S. trifasciata can be designed as a phytostabilizer in Cd-contaminated soils in its cultivation regions. Meanwhile, the mechanism of high Cd tolerance and accumulation characteristics in the roots of S. trifasciata should be explored. This study provides new resources for dealing with Cd-contaminated soils and exploring Cd tolerance and accumulation mechanisms in plants.

Evaluation of heavy metal distribution characteristics of agricultural soil-rice system in a high geological background area according to the influence index of comprehensive quality (IICQ).

Heavy metal pollution is a global ecological safety issue, especially in crops, where it directly threatens regional ecological security and human health. Selecting scientific evaluation methods is an important prerequisite for understanding the distribution of heavy metals in a region. To evaluate the distribution characteristics of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in farmland soil-rice system in Doumen District of Zhuhai City, Pearl River Delta, we analyzed the high geological background area and heavy metal contents in soil by inverse distance-weighted interpolation and single-factor pollution index. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) was used to study the migration and accumulation characteristics of heavy metals. Then, the soil-rice system was evaluated comprehensively with a novel evaluation method, i.e., the influence index of comprehensive quality (IICQ). Results showed that As, Cd, Cu, and Zn in the soil of the study area followed normal distribution. Cd and Cu were the main pollutants whose point contamination rates were 50% and 22.86%, respectively. A total of 2.86% of the soil were contaminated by As, and no Zn contamination was observed in the soil. At the same time, As and Cd in rice were partially polluted, and the Cu and Zn were not polluted. The order of bioaccumulation coefficient was Cd > Zn > Cu > As, and no evident enrichment was observed. According to the impact index of IICQ to evaluate the pollution of heavy metals in the soil-rice system, 96.98% of the soil in study area was in a state of moderate, heavy, and extreme pollution, which were concentrated in the northern and central parts of the study area. The soil-rice system in the high geological background area was in a subhealthy state. A total of 90.69% of the soil were polluted, but the rice met the national food safety standards.

Dynamic characteristics of heavy metal accumulation in the farmland soil over Xiaoqinling gold-mining region, Shaanxi, China

Determining dynamic characteristics and their controllers of heavy metal accumulation in soils has important consequences in the prevention and treatment of soil heavy metal pollution. In the present study, the soil samples were collected in the farmland over Xiaoqinling gold-mining region, Shaanxi, China, and analyzed their contents of heavy metals including Pb, Cd and Cu. Their contents were found to be increased on the whole during all the 3 decades studied, from 1985 to 2015. No matter what was on the studied region scale or Shaanxi province scale or China country scale, compared with their background values, these contents implied that these metals had accumulated since 1989 at least. All the accumulation rates depended heavily on the tailings from the gold-mining activities, so were kept stable as the tailings were produced continuously, until the gold mine got heavily exhausted and its mining activities were restricted since 2008, and then began to decrease in the whole region scale. The accumulation rates had their own site-specific characteristics over the studied region farmland because the rates were affected by the metal-bearing minerals, the geographical features and the local dominant wind, besides the tailings. The studied metal accumulation areas were enlarged with time and their rates were in order of Cd > Pb > Cu, which also was affected by the tailings, the metal-bearing minerals, the geographical features and the local dominant wind. The local dominant wind direction induced the metal accumulation extending toward the northwest in the studied farmland region. Therefore, weakening the influence of the wind is an effective way to prevent the heavy metal accumulation and the accumulation area enlarging in the studied farmland region.

Accumulation characteristics of heavy metals and dietary risk assessment of Bellamya aeruginosa in the Xiangjiang River, Lake Dongting Basin

洞庭湖流域对湘江湖南段6个城市江段铜锈环棱螺（Bellamya aeruginosa）腹足和内脏团的As、Cd、Pb、Cu、Zn、Cr富集量进行分析，运用单因子污染指数法评价其受污染程度，并分别采用平均每周/每月摄入量法和目标危害系数法对其膳食风险进行评估，旨在为湘江流域居民铜锈环棱螺的消费安全提供参考.结果显示，铜锈环棱螺腹足As、Cd、Pb、Cu和Zn的富集量均值分别为0.92、1.65、0.90、13.01和67.62 mg/kg，Cr未检出，As、Cd、Pb和Cu的超标率分别为87.06%、27.06%、24.72%和2.35%.内脏团As、Cd、Pb、Cu、Zn和Cr的富集量均值分别为9.61、3.21、3.75、33.58、169.05和1.23 mg/kg，As、Cd、Pb、Cu和Cr超标率分别为100%、71.76%、65.88%、14.12%和75.8%.所有江段成人As、Cu和Zn的每周摄入量均值和最高值均低于FAO/WHO食品添加剂联合专家委员会（JECFA）提出的暂定每周耐受摄入量参考值（PTWI），但株洲成人Cd的每月摄入量均值超过其每月耐受摄入量参考值，且最大值是其参考值的3.44倍，永州、湘潭地区成人Cd的每月摄入量最大值也分别是其参考值的1.16和1.68倍.所有江段铜锈环棱螺摄入的单一重金属健康风险值除As外均小于1，但多种重金属复合暴露健康风险值均接近或大于1.结果表明，湘江湖南段6个城市江段铜锈环棱螺均受到一定程度的污染，其中衡阳、湘潭和株洲江段较为严重，且各江段铜锈环棱螺内脏团重金属富集量整体上均高于腹足，故当地居民长期食用后存在潜在的健康风险.
