Simplified coherent chaotic optical secure communication scheme based on the Kramers-Kronig receiver.

Enhancing physical layer encryption in fiber-optic networks remains a challenging yet vital task. In this Letter, we propose a simplified coherent chaotic secure optical communication scheme based on the Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver. This scheme incorporates a semiconductor laser with a phase-conjugated optical feedback serving as a common chaotic source, and its chaotic output is directly injected into the two slave lasers arranged separately at the transmitter and receiver end to achieve high-quality synchronization of chaotic signals, with a corresponding chaotic bandwidth of 30.6 GHz. By virtue of the common-signal-induced broad chaotic synchronization, a proof-of-principle demonstration is successfully conducted. It involves the secure transmission of a 20 Gbaud 16-level quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal over a 50 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link. At the receiver end, we deploy a KK receiver to reconstruct the field of the optical signal and hence enable signal compensation and recovery with offline digital signal processing (DSP). This method simplifies device requirements in the current chaotic coherent optical secure communication, offering a cost-effective mode and promising path for advancing physical layer encryption in inter-data center communications.

Chaotic Systems-Based Secure Communication Scheme for Detection of Wind Turbines

With the popularity of the Industrial Internet of Things, there are huge security challenges in the storage and transmission of image information. How to ensure that transmitted images from malicious attacks and random tampering have become a hot topic of information security. In this paper, a new secure communication scheme is proposed in consideration of the security requirements of transmitted images during the detection of wind turbines process. The scheme is based on the image diffusion method of chaotic systems. By utilizing the sensitivity of the chaotic systems to the initial conditions and parameters, and using the parameters as the key to realizing the encryption and decryption of the image. Furthermore, a large amount of image information will be acquired in real-time during the inspection process of the fan blades by UAVs. Due to the limited computing and storage resources of UAVs, C-E-D three-layer architecture is adopted, which can effectively offload the complex tasks to the edge and cloud to significantly reduce UAVs latency and energy consumption. Test and analysis results show that the proposed encryption scheme is effective and reliable for image security communication applications.

Analog-digital hybrid chaos-based long-haul coherent optical secure communication.

We propose and numerically investigate a chaotic optical coherent secure communication scheme, which supports long-haul secure transmission for signals in advanced modulation formats. A hybrid optical chaos system is designed with coordination of digital and analog signals. The hybrid entropy source provides a broadband analog optical chaos signal, which could serve as the carrier to load quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data. Simultaneously, a digital binary signal generated from the entropy source is transmitted to establish long-haul chaotic synchronization. Coherent detection is utilized at the receiver, and a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm is adopted to reduce transmission distortion. A 5 Gbaud 16QAM signal is encrypted by a phase chaos carrier with the effective bandwidth of 5.8 GHz. A bit error rate (BER) below forward error correction (FEC) can be achieved after transmitting over 1600 km based on digital-signal-induced chaos synchronization technology. Optimal launch power is investigated to minimize nonlinear effects of transmission links. System security is guaranteed by the high dynamical complexity of the chaotic source and the sensitive time delay as the secret key.

An application of adaptive synchronization of uncertain chaotic system in secure communication systems

ABSTRACT Chaotic secure communication via synchronization of chaotic systems has attracted increasing attention in recent years. This note aims to introduce the function projective synchronization (FPS) of coupled fractional-order (FO) complex chaotic Lü system in the master-slave system formalism up to the desired scaling function matrix in the presence of bounded model uncertainties. An efficient chaotic secure communication scheme is proposed using the chaotic masking approach. In order to increase the unpredictability of the information signal, the transmitted signals to the channel are considered as the FO derivative of the product of the information signal and the states of the chaotic system. At the receiver side, by employing the Lyapunov stability theorem, an appropriate adaptive FO control law is derived to synchronize the master and slave systems. After the robust synchronization is achieved, the information signal can be recovered accurately with high speed in the transient response. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results, two numerical simulations are performed and some comparisons based on the adaptation parameter of the control law are provided.

Performance assessment of different chaotic systems in PI-observer based communication system

Recently chaos synchronisation together with chaotic secure communication has gained raising consideration and immense interest. Thanks to perfect aspects of chaos theory, synchronisation of chaotic systems has obtained substantial developments and has been well scrutinised for potential applications in several engineering fields. In this paper, we propose a novel procedure which selects qualified chaotic systems in a chaotic secure communication scheme with proportional integral observer (PI-observer) configuration. According to this method and offered criterion, we peruse the autocorrelations of chaotic maps in order to employ the ones with swift synchronisation time in the PI-observer based receiver. Various chaotic classes have been hired and the simulation results confirm the triumph of the method.

Time Delay Complex Chen Chaotic System and Secure Communication Scheme for Wireless Body Area Networks.

Although many chaotic systems with time delays have been studied in recent years, most studies have only focused on the theoretical level, without special applications. Therefore, we present a basic introduction of a time delay complex Chen chaotic system, including the influence of parameter changes and time delay factors on the time delay system. On the basis of complex modified projection synchronization (CMPS), we detail the design of a new controller and communication scheme and apply this communication scheme to a wireless body area network (WBAN), in order to encrypt and decrypt body data collected by sensors. Finally, we perform a numerical simulation, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed communication scheme.

Observer-Based Synchronization of Chaotic Systems Satisfying Incremental Quadratic Constraints and Its Application in Secure Communication

This paper presents a secure chaotic communication scheme using observer-based synchronization of chaotic systems. A class of chaotic systems satisfying incremental quadratic constraints are considered as the transmitter. The original message is encrypted in the noise-like output of the system. A circle criterion-based observer is designed for the system as the receiver by using the linear matrix inequalities technique. The message is recovered at the receiver end from the estimation error of the observer. To design the observer, a general algorithm to calculate incremental multiplier matrices for nonlinearities in chaotic systems is presented. Moreover, the proposed observer-based chaotic secure communication scheme is feasible for many common chaotic systems with ellipsoidal bounds. The simulation results show the good performance of the proposed communication scheme through an example of image transmission.

Secure Communication Through a Chaotic System and a Sliding-Mode Observer

This article presents a secure communication scheme based on chaotic systems using a sliding-mode observer (SMO) that is robust against disturbances affecting the transmitter and transmission process. The original message is first encrypted using a <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$N$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -cipher with a key signal and then fed into the state equation, whereas the key signal is fed into the output equation. The chaotic system in the transmitter is re-expressed to decouple the disturbances from the signals of interest. An SMO is then designed based on this form and implemented in the receiver to perform synchronization, and recover the broadcast messages to perform secure communication. The conditions required for the SMO to be feasible are investigated in terms of the transmitter system matrices. A set of design procedures for the chaotic secure communication scheme is outlined. Finally, a simulated example is shown to exhibit the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

Secure communication system in maritime navigation using state observer with linear matrix inequality

ABSTRACT With emerge of smart navigation, the secure communication issues have drawn extensive attention on maritime agendas between ships or with the shore. This paper presents a chaotic secure communication scheme by using observer design for maritime navigation and transportation systems. The proposed scheme involves three key factors: chaotic encryption, state observer, and chaotic decryption. The chaotic system, as the encryption keys carrying confidential information, will be sent from transmitter to the receiver through a public channel. It is obvious that the fewer signals are transmitted on the public channel, the higher security of the communication system is possible. A state observer is designed to estimate all system states when only partial states are detectable on the public channel. The robust observer gain is implemented in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI) for convex optimization. The process of information encryption and recovery has been discussed in detail. From the simulation results, it is found that the observer-based method can robustly estimate full state variables by using system output signals with LMI optimization. Based on these updated states with the the state observer, the original information is accurately recovered for safe navigation of vessels with reliability and efficiency.

Design and Virtex-7-Based Implementation of Video Chaotic Secure Communications

In this paper, a Virtex-7-based video chaotic secure communication scheme is investigated. First, the network sending and receiving controller Intellectual Property (IP) cores are designed. Next, the chaotic encryption and decryption IP cores are implemented using fixed-point algorithm, pipeline operation, and state machine control. Thus, video capturing, video displaying, network sending, network receiving, chaotic encrypting, and chaotic decrypting can be achieved via IP core integration design. An improved 7D chaotic stream cipher algorithm for resisting divide-and-conquer attack is then designed and realized on a Virtex-7 high-end FPGA platform. Hardware experimental results are also given to verify the feasibility of the scheme.

A novel secure data transmission scheme in industrial internet of things

The industrial Internet of Things (IoT) is a trend of factory development and a basic condition of intelligent factory. It is very important to ensure the security of data transmission in industrial IoT. Applying a new chaotic secure communication scheme to address the security problem of data transmission is the main contribution of this paper. The scheme is proposed and studied based on the synchronization of different-structure fractional-order chaotic systems with different order. The Lyapunov stability theory is used to prove the synchronization between the fractional-order drive system and the response system. The encryption and decryption process of the main data signals is implemented by using the n-shift encryption principle. We calculate and analyze the key space of the scheme. Numerical simulations are introduced to show the effectiveness of theoretical approach we proposed.

A Robust Synchronization-Based Chaotic Secure Communication Scheme With Double-Layered and Multiple Hybrid Networks

In this paper, based on the exponential synchronization of double-layered networks composed of multiple subnets, we bring forward a chaotic secure communication scheme, which is robust to different network sizes, time-varying delays, and stochastic noise. Cluster analysis is used to process the nodes with different dynamics, such that the subnets in the transmitter and receiver are one-to-one correspondence and constitute subnet pairs, while the node size of each subnet can be inconsistent. Each subnet pair is only accountable for encrypting/decrypting a part of information. There are many encryption/decryption units and they are operating in parallel, which can not only indicate the complex characteristic of different nodes but also speed up the information encryption/decryption. The proposed scheme applies the chaotic signals yielded by many chaotic systems as key sequences, such that the key space can grow with node sizes in the transmitter. This scheme is not subject to the constraint on the amplitude of the original message and chaotic signal, the influence of time-delay and stochastic noise, and it shows that only the nodes with large degrees need to apply controllers in restoring the original information. Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation manifest the feasibility and validity of the given scheme.

Fixed-time synchronization control of memristive MAM neural networks with mixed delays and application in chaotic secure communication

Abstract In this paper, the fixed-time synchronization control problem of memristive multidirectional associative memory neural networks (MMAMNNs) is considered. Based on the nonlinear and chaos characteristics of memristor, a chaotic model is constructed. And then, utilizing the Lyapunov stability theory, two appropriate controllers are constructed and different activation functions are used. This control method ensures that drive system and response system can achieve synchronization within a fixed time. So, compared with previous studies, it has more practical value. In addition, we present a fixed-time synchronization chaotic encryption method, the chaos characteristic of the model is used to encrypt plaintext, and the decryption of ciphertext is realized based on the synchronization control theories. Finally, several numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the validity of the theories and the chaotic secure communication scheme.

Simulation and implementation of memristive chaotic system and its application for communication systems

One of the most popular applications for chaotic systems is secure communication. The main purpose is to hide the information signal to be transmitted in a secure way, into a chaotic signal which is difficult to detect, and then to recover the information signal again. In response to this, memristor discovered by Leon O. Chua, known as the fourth basic element or the missing relationship can be implemented in chaotic circuit for a secure communication. The memristor based chaotic circuits which consist of three basic elements, have been used to obtain chaotic secure communication scheme in this paper. Using numerical simulation methods, including phase portraits, the largest Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagrams, the nonlinear dynamics are examined. In this respect, the advantage of chaotic feature of memristor and a memristor-based system was benefited for masking chaotic signals which are complicated to be analysed in communication systems. Therefore, the system was modelled with the help of LabVIEW and circuit with chaotic specialty was implemented in a secure communication. Simulation results confirm that the constituted design is likely to be utilizable in a secure communications application.

A chaotic secure communication scheme based on synchronization of double-layered and multiple complex networks

In this paper, we mainly propose a chaotic secure communication scheme which is based on the synchronization of double-layered and multiple complex dynamical networks. Compared with the previous chaotic secure communication schemes, in which only two chaotic systems or just a single-layer network composed of multiple chaotic systems is used, the introduction of a double-layered and multiple complex networks model composed of many encryption/encryption units can not only reflect the complex characteristics of different nodes, but also can improve the complexity and security of information encryption. By using a clustering method, nodes with the same characteristics belong to the same subnet, while the nodes with different characteristics belong to different ones. The subnets in the transmitter and receiver are one-to-one correspondence and form a pair of matching subnets, but the node size of each subnet can be inconsistent. Each subnet is only responsible for encrypting a certain part of information, and thus, the synchronization between each pair of matching subnets plays a crucial role on the correct recovery of information. Multiple encryption/decryption units operating in parallel way can speed up the encryption of information, and the key space can grow with the number of nodes in the transmitter. The proposed scheme utilizes the chaotic signals generated by many chaotic systems as the key sequences and adopts the one-time-one-cipher encryption method. Moreover, this scheme is not subject to the constraint that the amplitude of the encrypted signal should be much smaller than that of the chaotic signal, and it is particularly suitable for the big data encryption. Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Design and SOPC-Based Realization of a Video Chaotic Secure Communication Scheme

This paper proposes a new approach for hardware realization based on a system with programmable chip (SOPC) technology. The main feature of the SOPC-based scheme is that it can make full use of both FPGA and ARM, where the FPGA is used for video capturing, displaying, encrypting and decrypting, the ARM is adopted for TCP/IP protocol, Ethernet sending and receiving. SOPC technology gives full play to the advantages of both FPGA and ARM that complement each other, leading to better real-time performance and is more convenient for hardware realization. In addition, some results of security analysis are also given. Hardware realization results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed SOPC-based approach.

A novel method of realizing stochastic chaotic secure communication by synchrosqueezed wavelet transform

Based on synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT) algorithm, a new stochastic chaotic secure communication scheme is proposed in this paper. Information signals are modulated by additive chaos masking in the sending terminal. In order to improve the anti-jamming ability of chaotic systems, the proper controllers are designed to realize mean square asymptotic synchronization for a class of chaotic systems with random perturbation. In the receiving terminal, unlike the traditional extraction methods, a novel SWT algorithm is introduced to recover information signals correctly. Simulation results verify that both the synchronization approach and the security communication scheme are effective. For multi-component sinusoidal signal with adjacent frequency, the accuracy of signals recovered by SWT is higher than that recovered by empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method, even at the high noise level. Finally, the simulation experiment of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal has been carried out, which proves that the proposed scheme based on SWT can reduce the Bit-Error-Rate than other algorithms even under high noise level.

Single channel secure communication scheme based on synchronization of fractional-order chaotic Chua’s systems

This paper deals with the design of a fractional-order chaotic secure communication scheme. On the emitter side, a fractional-order Chua’s system is used as the drive system to generate the encrypted message signal. The input secret message is modulated in the chaotic dynamics by inclusion rather than being directly added to the chaotic signal on the transmission line. A single channel is used for transmission of the encrypted signal. At the receiver side, a step-by-step sliding mode fractional-order chaotic observer subject to unknown input is proposed as the response system to obtain robust synchronization between the emitter and the receiver. After chaos synchronization is achieved at the receiver side, an estimation of the state variables is obtained and the plaintext is recovered. Finite-time convergence of both state and unknown input estimation errors is established. The efficiency of this proposed secure communication scheme is illustrated by numerical simulations.

Design and ARM-embedded implementation of a chaotic secure communication scheme based on H.264 selective encryption

In this paper, a novel video chaotic secure communication scheme and its ARM-embedded hardware implementation are investigated, based on the H.264 selective encryption and multi-core multi-process. A six-dimensional discrete-time hyperchaotic system equipped with a nonlinear nominal matrix is firstly constructed, and the corresponding chaotic encryption algorithm is then designed. During H.264 encoding, the difference components of motion vectors in both the horizontal and vertical directions, as well as the DC transform coefficients, are selectively encrypted by using such a chaotic encryption algorithm, respectively, so as to enhance the safety performance. To improve the processing speed and transmission frame rate of the whole hardware system, an ARM-based hardware platform with multi-core multi-process is further adopted to realize the H.264 selective video chaotic secure communication, where the sender collects and encrypts the original video with four-core four-process mode, and the receiver decrypts the encrypted video with three-core three-process mode, in which one core binds one process. Finally, the security performance of the designed system is tested using the TESTU01 statistical test suites and some other statistical security analysis. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results validate the feasibility and reliability of the proposed scheme.

On the novel chaotic secure communication scheme design

In this paper, the problem on the chaotic secure communication is discussed. First a new dual channel transmission mechanism is presented and used in secure communication scheme design, then the channel-switching techniques are adopted to further improve the security of information transmission. Finally some typical numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed secure communication scheme.
