CatLearning: highly accurate gene expression prediction from histone mark.

Histone modifications, known as histone marks, are pivotal in regulating gene expression within cells. The vast array of potential combinations of histone marks presents a considerable challenge in decoding the regulatory mechanisms solely through biological experimental approaches. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a method called CatLearning. It utilizes a modified convolutional neural network architecture with a specialized adaptation Residual Network to quantitatively interpret histone marks and predict gene expression. This architecture integrates long-range histone information up to 500Kb and learns chromatin interaction features without 3D information. By using only one histone mark, CatLearning achieves a high level of accuracy. Furthermore, CatLearning predicts gene expression by simulating changes in histone modifications at enhancers and throughout the genome. These findings help comprehend the architecture of histone marks and develop diagnostic and therapeutic targets for diseases with epigenetic changes.

Tailored Physicochemical Cues Direct Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation through Epigenetic Regulation Using Colloidal Self-Assembled Patterns.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) shapes the stem cell fate during differentiation by exerting relevant biophysical cues. However, the mechanism of stem cell fate decisions in response to ECM-backed complex biophysical cues has not been fully understood due to the lack of versatile ECMs. Here, we designed two versatile ECMs using colloidal self-assembly technology to probe the mechanisms of their effects on mechanotransduction and stem cell fate regulation. Binary colloidal crystals (BCC) with a hexagonally close-packed structure, composed of silica (5 μm) and polystyrene (0.4 μm) particles as well as a polydimethylsiloxane-embedded BCC (BCCP), were fabricated. They have defined surface chemistry, roughness, stiffness, ion release, and protein adsorption properties, which can modulate the cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). On the BCC, hASCs preferred osteogenesis at an early stage but showed a higher tendency toward adipogenesis at later stages. In contrast, the results of BCCP diverged from those of BCC, suggesting a unique regulation of ECM-dependent mechanotransduction. The BCC-mediated cell adhesion reduced the size of the focal adhesion complex, accompanying an ordered spatial organization and cytoskeletal rearrangement. This morphological restriction led to the modulation of mechanosensitive transcription factors, such as c-FOS, the enrichment of transcripts in specific signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT, and the activation of the Hippo signaling pathway. Epigenetic analyses showed changes in histone modifications across different substrates, suggesting that chromatin remodeling participated in BCC-mediated mechanotransduction. This study demonstrates that BCCs are versatile artificial ECMs that can regulate human stem cells' fate through unique biological signaling, which is beneficial in biomaterial design and stem cell engineering.

Epigenetic regulation is important for circadian rhythm. In previous studies, multiple histone modifications were found at the Period (Per) locus. However, most of these studies were not conducted in clock neurons. In our screen, we found that a CoREST mutation resulted in defects in circadian rhythm by affecting Per transcription. Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that CoREST regulates circadian rhythm by regulating multiple histone modifiers at the Per locus. Genetic and physical interaction experiments supported these regulatory relationships. Moreover, through tissue-specific chromatin immunoprecipitation assays in clock neurons, we found that the CoREST mutation led to time-dependent changes in corresponding histone modifications at the Per locus. Finally, we proposed a model indicating the role of the CoREST complex in the regulation of circadian rhythm. This study revealed the dynamic changes of histone modifications at the Per locus specifically in clock neurons. Importantly, it provides insights into the role of epigenetic factors in the regulation of dynamic gene expression changes in circadian rhythm.

Decline in corepressor CNOT1 in the pregnant myometrium near term impairs progesterone receptor function and increases contractile gene expression

Progesterone (P4), acting via its nuclear receptor (PR), is critical for pregnancy maintenance by suppressing proinflammatory and contraction-associated protein (CAP)/contractile genes in the myometrium. P4/PR partially exerts these effects by tethering to NF-κB bound to their promoters, thereby decreasing NF-κB transcriptional activity. However, the underlying mechanisms whereby P4/PR interaction blocks proinflammatory and CAP gene expression are not fully understood. Herein, we characterized CCR-NOT transcription complex subunit 1 (CNOT1) as a P4-induced corepressor that also interacts within the same chromatin complex as PR-B. In mouse myometrium increased expression of CAP genes Oxtr and Cx43 at term coincided with a marked decline in expression and binding of endogenous CNOT1 to NF-κB-response elements within the Oxtr and Cx43 promoters. Increased CAP gene expression was accompanied by a pronounced decrease in the enrichment of repressive histone marks and an increase in the enrichment of active histone marks to this genomic region. These changes in histone modification were associated with changes in the expression of corresponding histone-modifying enzymes. Myometrial tissues from P4-treated 18.5 dpc pregnant mice manifested increased Cnot1 expression at 18.5 dpc, compared to vehicle-treated controls. In hTERT-HM cells, P4 treatment enhanced CNOT1 expression and its recruitment to NF-κB-response elements within the CX43 and OXTR promoter regions. Furthermore, knockdown of CNOT1 significantly increased the expression of contractile genes. These novel findings suggest that decreased expression and binding of the transcriptional corepressor CNOT1 at the chromatin level near term and associated changes in histone modifications at the OXTR and CX43 promoters contribute to the induction of myometrial contractility leading to parturition.

Histone Chaperone Deficiency in Arabidopsis Plants Triggers Adaptive Epigenetic Changes in Histone Variants and Modifications

At the molecular scale, adaptive advantages during plant growth and development rely on modulation of gene expression, primarily provided by epigenetic machinery. One crucial part of this machinery is histone posttranslational modifications, which form a flexible system, driving transient changes in chromatin, and defining particular epigenetic states. Posttranslational modifications work in concert with replication-independent histone variants further adapted for transcriptional regulation and chromatin repair. However, little is known about how such complex regulatory pathways are orchestrated and interconnected in cells. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of mass spectrometry–based approaches to explore how different epigenetic layers interact in Arabidopsis mutants lacking certain histone chaperones. We show that defects in histone chaperone function (e.g., chromatin assembly factor-1 or nucleosome assembly protein 1 mutations) translate into an altered epigenetic landscape, which aids the plant in mitigating internal instability. We observe changes in both the levels and distribution of H2A.W.7, altogether with partial repurposing of H3.3 and changes in the key repressive (H3K27me1/2) or euchromatic marks (H3K36me1/2). These shifts in the epigenetic profile serve as a compensatory mechanism in response to impaired integration of the H3.1 histone in the fas1 mutants. Altogether, our findings suggest that maintaining genome stability involves a two-tiered approach. The first relies on flexible adjustments in histone marks, while the second level requires the assistance of chaperones for histone variant replacement.

Unveiling the role of HP1α-HDAC1-STAT1 axis as a therapeutic target for HP1α-positive intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

BackgroundIntrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICCA) is a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors characterized by high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Heterochromatin Protein 1α (HP1α) is one of the most important nonhistone chromosomal proteins involved in transcriptional silencing via heterochromatin formation and structural maintenance. The effect of HP1α on the progression of ICCA remained unclear.MethodsThe effect on the proliferation of ICCA was detected by experiments in two cell lines and two ICCA mouse models. The interaction between HP1α and Histone Deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) was determined using Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and the binding mechanism was studied using immunoprecipitation assays (co-IP). The target gene was screened out by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). The occupation of DNA binding proteins and histone modifications were predicted by bioinformatic methods and evaluated by Cleavage Under Targets and Tagmentation (CUT & Tag) and Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP).ResultsHP1α was upregulated in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICCA) tissues and regulated the proliferation of ICCA cells by inhibiting the interferon pathway in a Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 1 (STAT1)-dependent manner. Mechanistically, STAT1 is transcriptionally regulated by the HP1α-HDAC1 complex directly and epigenetically via promoter binding and changes in different histone modifications, as validated by high-throughput sequencing. Broad-spectrum HDAC inhibitor (HDACi) activates the interferon pathway and inhibits the proliferation of ICCA cells by downregulating HP1α and targeting the heterodimer. Broad-spectrum HDACi plus interferon preparation regimen was found to improve the antiproliferative effects and delay ICCA development in vivo and in vitro, which took advantage of basal activation as well as direct activation of the interferon pathway. HP1α participates in mediating the cellular resistance to both agents.ConclusionsHP1α-HDAC1 complex influences interferon pathway activation by directly and epigenetically regulating STAT1 in transcriptional level. The broad-spectrum HDACi plus interferon preparation regimen inhibits ICCA development, providing feasible strategies for ICCA treatment. Targeting the HP1α-HDAC1-STAT1 axis is a possible strategy for treating ICCA, especially HP1α-positive cases.

Epigenetic Modulation of GPER Expression in Gastric and Colonic Smooth Muscle of Male and Female Non-Obese Diabetic (NOD) Mice: Insights into H3K4me3 and H3K27ac Modifications.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) affects gastrointestinal (GI) motility, favoring gastroparesis, constipation, and fecal incontinence, which are more prevalent in women. The mechanisms are unknown. Given the G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor's (GPER) role in GI motility, we investigated sex-related diabetes-induced epigenetic changes in GPER. We assessed GPER mRNA and protein expression levels using qPCR and Western blot analyses, and quantified the changes in nuclear DNA methyltransferases and histone modifications (H3K4me3, H3Ac, and H3K27Ac) by ELISA kits. Targeted bisulfite and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were used to evaluate DNA methylation and histone modifications around the GPER promoter by chromatin immunoprecipitation assays in gastric and colonic smooth muscle tissues of male and female control (CTR) and non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. GPER expression was downregulated in NOD, with sex-dependent variations. In the gastric smooth muscle, not in colonic smooth muscle, downregulation coincided with differences in methylation ratios between regions 1 and 2 of the GPER promoter of NOD. DNA methylation was higher in NOD male colonic smooth muscle than in NOD females. H3K4me3 and H3ac enrichment decreased in NOD gastric smooth muscle. H3K4me3 levels diminished in the colonic smooth muscle of NOD. H3K27ac levels were unaffected, but enrichment decreased in NOD male gastric smooth muscle; however, it increased in the NOD male colonic smooth muscle and decreased in the female NOD colonic smooth muscle. Male NOD colonic smooth muscle exhibited decreased H3K27ac levels, not female, whereas female NOD colonic smooth muscle demonstrated diminished enrichment of H3ac at the GPER promoter, contrary to male NOD. Sex-specific epigenetic mechanisms contribute to T1D-mediated suppression of GPER expression in the GI tract. These insights advance our understanding of T1D complications and suggest promising avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions.

Nicotinamide Mononucleotide improves oocyte maturation of mice with type 1 diabetes

BackgroundThe number of patients with type 1 diabetes rises rapidly around the world in recent years. Maternal diabetes has a detrimental effect on reproductive outcomes due to decreased oocyte quality. However, the strategies to improve the oocyte quality and artificial reproductive technology (ART) efficiency of infertile females suffering from diabetes have not been fully studied. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) on oocyte maturation of mouse with type 1 diabetes mouse and explore the underlying mechanisms of NMN’s effect.MethodsStreptozotocin (STZ) was used to establish the mouse models with type 1 diabetes. The successful establishment of the models was confirmed by the results of body weight test, fasting blood glucose test and haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The in vitro maturation (IVM) rate of oocytes from diabetic mice was examined. Immunofluorescence staining (IF) was performed to examine the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, spindle/chromosome structure, mitochondrial function, actin dynamics, DNA damage and histone modification of oocytes, which are potential factors affecting the oocyte quality. The quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the mRNA levels of Sod1, Opa1, Mfn2, Drp1, Sirt1 and Sirt3 in oocytes.ResultsThe NMN supplementation increased the oocyte maturation rate of the mice with diabetes. Furthermore, NMN supplementation improved the oocyte quality by rescuing the actin dynamics, reversing meiotic defects, improving the mitochondrial function, reducing ROS level, suppressing DNA damage and restoring changes in histone modifications of oocytes collected from the mice with diabetes.ConclusionNMN could improve the maturation rate and quality of oocytes in STZ-induced diabetic mice, which provides a significant clue for the treatment of infertility of the patients with diabetes.

LKRSDH-dependent histone modifications of insulin-like peptide sites contribute to age-related circadian rhythm changes.

To understand aging impact on the circadian rhythm, we screened for factors influencing circadian changes during aging. Our findings reveal that LKRSDH mutation significantly reduces rhythmicity in aged flies. RNA-seq identifies a significant increase in insulin-like peptides (dilps) in LKRSDH mutants due to the combined effects of H3R17me2 and H3K27me3 on transcription. Genetic evidence suggests that LKRSDH regulates age-related circadian rhythm changes through art4 and dilps. ChIP-seq analyzes whole genome changes in H3R17me2 and H3K27me3 histone modifications in young and old flies with LKRSDH mutation and controls. The results reveal a correlation between H3R17me2 and H3K27me3, underscoring the role of LKRSDH in regulating gene expression and modification levels during aging. Overall, our study demonstrates that LKRSDH-dependent histone modifications at dilps sites contribute to age-related circadian rhythm changes. This data offers insights and a foundational reference for aging research by unveiling the relationship between LKRSDH and H3R17me2/H3K27me3 histone modifications in aging.

Cyclic stretch induced epigenetic activation of periodontal ligament cells

Periodontal ligament (PDL) cells play a crucial role in maintaining periodontal integrity and function by providing cell sources for ligament regeneration. While biophysical stimulation is known to regulate cell behaviors and functions, its impact on epigenetics of PDL cells has not yet been elucidated. Here, we aimed to investigate the cytoskeletal changes, epigenetic modifications, and lineage commitment of PDL cells following the application of stretch stimuli to PDL. PDL cells were subjected to stretching (0.1 Hz, 10 %). Subsequently, changes in focal adhesion, tubulin, and histone modification were observed. The survival ability in inflammatory conditions was also evaluated. Furthermore, using a rat hypo-occlusion model, we verified whether these phenomena are observed in vivo. Stretched PDL cells showed maximal histone 3 acetylation (H3Ace) at 2 h, aligning perpendicularly to the stretch direction. RNA sequencing revealed stretching altered gene sets related to mechanotransduction, histone modification, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, and differentiation. We further found that anchorage, cell elongation, and actin/microtubule acetylation were highly upregulated with mechanosensitive chromatin remodelers such as H3Ace and histone H3 trimethyl lysine 9 (H3K9me3) adopting euchromatin status. Inhibitor studies showed mechanotransduction-mediated chromatin modification alters PDL cells behaviors. Stretched PDL cells displayed enhanced survival against bacterial toxin (C12-HSL) or ROS (H2O2) attack. Furthermore, cyclic stretch priming enhanced the osteoclast and osteoblast differentiation potential of PDL cells, as evidenced by upregulation of lineage-specific genes. In vivo, PDL cells from normally loaded teeth displayed an elongated morphology and higher levels of H3Ace compared to PDL cells with hypo-occlusion, where mechanical stimulus is removed. Overall, these data strongly link external physical forces to subsequent mechanotransduction and epigenetic changes, impacting gene expression and multiple cellular behaviors, providing important implications in cell biology and tissue regeneration.

Unveiling the epigenetic landscape of plants using flow cytometry approach.

Plants are sessile creatures that have to adapt constantly changing environmental circumstances. Plants are subjected to a range of abiotic stressors as a result of unpredictable climate change. Understanding how stress-responsive genes are regulated can help us better understand how plants can adapt to changing environmental conditions. Epigenetic markers that dynamically change in response to stimuli, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications are known to regulate gene expression. Individual cells or particles' physical and/or chemical properties can be measured using the method known as flow cytometry. It may therefore be used to evaluate changes in DNA methylation, histone modifications, and other epigenetic markers, making it a potent tool for researching epigenetics in plants. We explore the use of flow cytometry as a technique for examining epigenetic traits in this thorough discussion. The separation of cell nuclei and their subsequent labeling with fluorescent antibodies, offering information on the epigenetic mechanisms in plants when utilizing flow cytometry. We also go through the use of high-throughput data analysis methods to unravel the complex epigenetic processes occurring inside plant systems.

Abstract 4293: Chromosomal instability causes epigenetic aberrations in cancer

Abstract Chromosomal instability and changes in the epigenome are defining features in most metastatic cancers. Our research links chromosomal missegregation, their containment in micronuclei, and subsequent rupture of the micronuclear envelope to histone post-translational modification aberrations. This relationship was across all tested human and murine cancer cell lines, as well as non-transformed cells. Furthermore, we discovered that the observed changes in histone PTMs were caused by either micronuclear rupture or the persistence of histone PTM status during cell division. Moreover, we revealed substantial chromatin accessibility differences in micronuclei. Notably, there is a distinct bias in chromatin accessibility between promoter regions compared to distal and intergenic regions of the genome, which aligned well with observed changes in histone modifications. The induction of chromosomal instability leads to widespread, heterogeneous, and heritable abnormalities in the epigenetic landscape of cancer cells. Therefore, on top of genomic copy number changes, chromosomal instability causes epigenetic reprogramming, which adds another layer to cancer heterogeneity. Citation Format: Albert S. Histone modification-dependent production of peptide hormones facilitates acquisition of pluripotency during leaf-to-callus transition in Arabidopsis.

Chromatin configuration is critical for establishing tissue identity and changes substantially during tissue identity transitions. The crucial scientific and agricultural technology of in vitro tissue culture exploits callus formation from diverse tissue explants and tissue regeneration via de novo organogenesis. We investigated the dynamic changes in H3ac and H3K4me3 histone modifications during leaf-to-callus transition in Arabidopsis thaliana. We analyzed changes in the global distribution of H3ac and H3K4me3 during the leaf-to-callus transition, focusing on transcriptionally active regions in calli relative to leaf explants, defined by increased accumulation of both H3ac and H3K4me3. Peptide signaling was particularly activated during callus formation; the peptide hormones RGF3, RGF8, PIP1 and PIPL3 were upregulated, promoting callus proliferation and conferring competence for de novo shoot organogenesis. The corresponding peptide receptors were also implicated in peptide-regulated callus proliferation and regeneration capacity. The effect of peptide hormones in plant regeneration is likely at least partly conserved in crop plants. Our results indicate that chromatin-dependent regulation of peptide hormone production not only stimulates callus proliferation but also establishes pluripotency, improving the overall efficiency of two-step regeneration in plant systems.

Research Proposed: Further study into the Pathway Downstream Sperm miR212/132 in EE-induced Phenotype Inheritance

It has been shown that some environmental factors can lead to changes in an organism’s genetic materials and, therefore, be inherited by the following generations. This inheritance form shows evolutionary and clinical implications, suggesting value for research. In a previous study (Benito, 2018), it has been proved that miR212/132 plays an important role in mediating Environmental Enrichment (EE)-induced phenotype inheritance. Proposing for further research, this article aims at studying the pathway downstream of miR212/132. Two targets of miR212/132, Dnmt3a and Rsf1, are considered possible downstream factors, and some changes in DNA methylation or histone modification are regarded as possible downstream effects that lead to EE phenotype in offspring. Experiments are designed accordingly.

Matrin3 mediates differentiation through stabilizing chromatin loop-domain interactions and YY1 mediated enhancer-promoter interactions

Although emerging evidence indicates that alterations in proteins within nuclear compartments elicit changes in chromosomal architecture and differentiation, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Here we investigate the direct role of the abundant nuclear complex protein Matrin3 (Matr3) in chromatin architecture and development in the context of myogenesis. Using an acute targeted protein degradation platform (dTAG-Matr3), we reveal the dynamics of development-related chromatin reorganization. High-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) experiments revealed substantial chromatin loop rearrangements soon after Matr3 depletion. Notably, YY1 binding was detected, accompanied by the emergence of novel YY1-mediated enhancer-promoter loops, which occurred concurrently with changes in histone modifications and chromatin-level binding patterns. Changes in chromatin occupancy by Matr3 also correlated with these alterations. Overall, our results suggest that Matr3 mediates differentiation through stabilizing chromatin accessibility and chromatin loop-domain interactions, and highlight a conserved and direct role for Matr3 in maintenance of chromosomal architecture.

The Dynamics of Histone Modifications during Mammalian Zygotic Genome Activation.

Mammalian fertilization initiates the reprogramming of oocytes and sperm, forming a totipotent zygote. During this intricate process, the zygotic genome undergoes a maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT) and subsequent zygotic genome activation (ZGA), marking the initiation of transcriptional control and gene expression post-fertilization. Histone modifications are pivotal in shaping cellular identity and gene expression in many mammals. Recent advances in chromatin analysis have enabled detailed explorations of histone modifications during ZGA. This review delves into conserved and unique regulatory strategies, providing essential insights into the dynamic changes in histone modifications and their variants during ZGA in mammals. The objective is to explore recent advancements in leading mechanisms related to histone modifications governing this embryonic development phase in depth. These considerations will be useful for informing future therapeutic approaches that target epigenetic regulation in diverse biological contexts. It will also contribute to the extensive areas of evolutionary and developmental biology and possibly lay the foundation for future research and discussion on this seminal topic.

Abstract A073: A link between the mitochondrial enzyme glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase 2 (GOT2) and epigenetic dysregulation in pancreatic cancer

Abstract At present, pancreatic cancer stands as the 3rd cause of cancer-related fatalities in the US. The most common type of pancreatic cancer develops from the exocrine pancreas known as ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). PDAC exhibits a highly aggressive nature and carries a bleak prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate averaging below 10%. Moreover, the majority of patients receive their diagnosis at advanced stages of the disease. Compounding the issue, the emergence of resistance to modern first-line chemotherapies contributes to the progression of PDAC and exacerbates its overall high mortality rate. The specific cause of PDAC remains unknown, although lifestyle factors such as alcohol and tobacco use, along with genetic abnormalities, have been linked to its increasing incidence over the past decade. Mutations in KRAS, TP53, SMAD4, and CDKN2A are recognized as genetic drivers contributing to the progression of PDAC. Recently, research has shifted its focus to investigating the role of epigenetic dysregulation in PDAC advancement. Significant evidence suggests that remodeling of the epigenome plays a crucial role in the development and progression of PDAC, but the exact mediators responsible for these alterations remain largely unknown. Recent studies have indicated that mitochondrial enzymes may influence epigenetic modifications, thus contributing to the progression of tumorigenesis. In our previous work, we reported that the mitochondrial protein GOT2 (glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase) supports PDAC development by promoting an immunosuppressive phenotype within the tumor microenvironment. Ongoing epigenetic studies following ChIP- and ATAC-seq (chromatin immunoprecipitation and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing, respectively) experiments in mammalian PDAC cell lines have revealed that loss of GOT2 leads to genome-wide changes in histone acetylation and chromatin accessibility. These changes in acetylation and chromatin architecture imply a reconfiguration of the epigenetic landscape and subsequent alterations in the PDAC transcriptome, suggesting a potential role for GOT2 in maintaining epigenetic profiles within the context of pancreatic cancer. Further exploration of the genomic regions where these histone modification changes occur has implicated cis-regulatory regions and the expression of their target genes, which may be crucial for PDAC progression. Collectively, these epigenetic studies hold the potential to identify novel therapeutic targets that could address the urgent need for more effective antineoplastic treatments against this aggressive form of pancreatic cancer. Mechanisms of Transgenerational ‘Memory’ in Mice and Rats: A Review

Researchers have discovered that parental experiences and environment can affect offspring behaviors and phenotypes through non-genetic mechanisms in one or more generations among various animals. This phenomenon is most commonly studied in mice and rats, where different mechanisms are believed to exist due to the diverse inheritance patterns discovered with different parental experiences in the experiments, including stress, liver damage, odor fear conditioning, environmental enrichment (EE), etc. Besides the commonly known factor, social transmission, epigenetic modifications are also suggested to be a major cause, with DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA level change observed in different studies. The epigenetic marks are lost after certain generations, and they are found to be reversible due to environmental change. This non-genetic phenotypic response to environmental stimuli could benefit or harm offspring.
