Analysis Of The Relationship Between Knowledge, Attitude And Oral Health Behavior And Numbers Dental Caries

Background: Dental caries is an oral health problem that is of global concern, where dental caries is a dental disease characterized by damage to the tooth surface and if left untreated, the infection will spread to the pulp. The impact is changes in tooth structure, pain and infection and death of the pulp. There are 57 students out of 83 new undergraduate students in 2023 at the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business experiencing dental caries, this case has always been a common dental problem, but it must be reduced to a very low number of cases. Objective: to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and oral health behavior and the rate of dental caries in new students at the Faculty of Economics and Islamic Business, UIN North Sumatra, Medan. Methodology: The research method is observational analytics with a cross sectional approach, a sample of 287 respondents, data collection methods using observation and questionnaires. Results: there is a relationship between knowledge and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000), there is a relationship between attitudes and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000), and there is a relationship between behavior and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000). Discussion: behavior is the most dominant factor influencing the rate of dental caries ? = 0.002, OR value 26.903, and C.I 95% (3.250 – 222.684). Conclusion: Faculty to create a joint policy with university clinics in the form of an oral health program. Students are expected to know, behave well, and apply oral health behavior.

Endodontic management in geriatric patient with medical compromised

Endodontic treatment in geriatric patient with medical compromise is not a contraindication, but needs special treats, those are medical history, medical problems, psychological, age-related changes, changes in tooth structure, and tissue response. This ar-ticle is aimed to describe the role of management endodontic treatment in geriatric patient. A 62 years old male was diagnosed of tooth 16 as asymptomatic apical periodontitis. Radiographic examination shows widening of the periodontal ligament and periapical radiolucency. The patient has a history of hypertension and takes medication regularly. The endodontictreatment pro-cedure is preceded by IEC to the patient regarding the multivisit endodontic treatment by fulfilling the endodontic triad princi-ples. The treatment was conducted in the morning with short duration. Rubber dam was used in this treatment before rewalling and other procedures. Root canal preparation using rotary Protaper Next files on mesiobuccal up to X2 file (#25/06) and X3 file (#30/07) on mesiodistal and palatal canals. The root canals were irrigated using5.25% NaOCl and aquades. The root canal fil-ling technique was performed using a single cone technique, an epoxy resin sealer and gutta-percha materials. Theresult showed endodontic treatment multivisit in geriatric patient with compromise medis is succesfull. It was concluded that appropriate en-dodontic management in geriatric patient with medical compromise will support the success of the treatment.

Introduction. Tooth loss and changes in tooth structure affect the quality of life of patients both from the aspect of orofacial health and general health as well. Case report. Lack of teeth reduces the ability to chew and swallow food, which significantly disrupts the function of the digestive system. Less pleasing appearance and speech disorders affect the patient's psychological status and quality of social life. Conclusion. Elderly patients represent a specific category to which special attention should be paid when solving the problem of edentulousness.

Usability of first molar teeth measurements for age and sex estimation in cone-beam computed tomography images

Aim: The morphological changes in tooth structure due to aging gain importance in the adult period. These age-related changes can be used to determine age and sex. The aim of this study was to determine the usability of first molar tooth measurements obtained by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in estimating chronological age and sex in Turkish study group.Materials and methods: Three-dimensional images of 332 patients older than 12 years of age with known chronological age and sex were evaluated by semi-automatic segmentation performed separately by two observers. Pulp volume and tooth volume were measured from maxillary or mandibular molar tooth in each patient. Simple linear regression analysis and discriminant function analysis were performed to estimate age and sex using the measurements. In addition, independent sample t-test was used to compare the measurements according to sex and tooth position. Results: Sex was estimated by maxillary first molar volume ratio in 76.6% of women and 56.3% of men. Age estimation (AE) with pulp/tooth volume ratio (PTVR) gave more effective results in males and maxillary first molars.Conclusions: In this study, it was found that maxillary first molar volume ratio gave more accurate results in males AE and in females’ sex estimation (SE).

Mandible Biomechanics and Continuously Erupting Teeth: A New Defect Model for Studying Load-Bearing Biomaterials.

Animals with elodont dentition and unfused mandible symphyses are hypothesized to have symmetric incisor morphology. Since these animals maintain their teeth by gnawing, they may provide physiologic feedback on mechanical function when unilateral mandible defects are created that manifest as ipsilateral changes in tooth structure. This defect model would potentially generate important information on the functional/mechanical properties of implants. Rats’ and rabbits’ mandibles and teeth are analyzed with µCT at baseline and post-intervention (n = 8 for each). Baseline incisors were compared. In a unilateral mandible pilot study, defects—ranging from critical size defect to complete ramus osteotomies—were created to assess effect on dentition (rats, n = 7; rabbits, n = 6). Within 90% confidence intervals, animals showed no baseline left/right differences in their incisors. There are apparent dental changes associated with unilateral defect type and location. Thus, at baseline, animals exhibit statistically significant incisor symmetry and there is an apparent relationship between mandible defect and incisor growth. The baseline symmetry proven here sets the stage to study the degree to which hemi-mandible destabilizing procedures result in measurable & reproducible disruption of dental asymmetry. In a validated model, an implant designed to function under load that prevents incisor asymmetry would provide supporting evidence that the implant has clinically useful load-bearing function.

Evaluation of dental caries, tooth crack, and age-related changes in tooth structure using optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique that can visualize the internal biological structure without X-ray exposure. Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) is one of the latest version of OCT, wherein the light source is a tunable laser that sweeps near-infrared wavelength light to achieve real-time imaging. The imaging depth of OCT is highly influenced by the translucency of the medium. The medium that does not transmit light and the deeper structure beyond the range of light penetration depth are not relevant for OCT imaging. In OCT, sound enamel is almost transparent at the OCT wavelength range, and enamel and dentin can be distinguished from each other as the dentin–enamel junction (DEJ) appears as a dark border. Demineralized enamel and dentin are imaged as bright zones because of the formation of numerous micro-porosities where the backscatter of OCT signal is increased. In cavitated caries at interproximal or occlusal hidden zone, the upper margin of the cavity reflects the signal showing a distinct bright border in the SS-OCT image. SS-OCT is capable of determining crack penetration depth even when the cracks extended beyond the DEJ. SS-OCT has a high degree of sensitivity and specificity for the detection of dental caries and tooth cracks. SS-OCT is also capable of detecting non-carious cervical lesions and occlusal tooth wear in cross-sectional views to estimate the amount of tooth structure loss.

DETERMINING TOOTH OCCLUSAL SURFACE RELIEF INDICATOR BY MEANS OF AUTOMATED 3D SHAPE ANALYSIS

Abstract. Determining occlusal surface relief indicator plays an important role in odontometric tooth shape analysis. An analysis of the parameters of surface relief indicators provides valuable information about closure of dental arches (occlusion) and changes in structure of teeth in lifetime. Such data is relevant for dentistry or anthropology applications. Descriptive techniques commonly used for surface relief evaluation have limited precision which, as a result, does not provide for reliability of conclusions about structure and functioning of teeth. Parametric techniques developed for such applications need special facilities and are time-consuming which limits their spread and ease to access. Nevertheless the use of 3D models, obtained by photogrammetric techniques, allows attaining required measurements accuracy and has a potential for process automation. We introduce new approaches for determining tooth occlusal surface relief indicator and provide data on efficiency in use of different indicators in natural attrition evaluation.

Dentin decalcification during lithium treatment: case report

Severe dental decay and changes in tooth structure have been reported in association with the use of lithium in Psychiatry, but lithium effects on tooth inorganic composition remain unknown. A 30-year-old woman with bipolar disorder, treated with lithium carbonate presented severe dental decay. Dentin samples from lithium and healthy volunteers were collected and submitted to ionic and ultrastructural analysis. Samples from the lithium patient exhibited irregular peritubular walls and the mineral crystals were irregularly arranged in the intertubular dentin. In addition, a decrease in Mg/P/Ca and an increase of Zn concentrations were detected. These data suggest that the severe dental decay and changes in the tooth structure observed for the lithium-treated patient are related to dentin mineral loss and that this pathological condition is different from caries lesions.

The use of immunohistochemistry in understanding the structure and function of the extracellular matrix of dental tissues.

The availability of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies directed toward the recognition of epitopes in a variety of extracellular matrix components of the dentition represents a powerful tool in the investigation of the structure and biology of dental tissues in health and disease. The immunolocalization of both whole molecule structures and specific regions of molecules has the potential to yield information on tooth development, the effects of aging, changes in tooth structure during the initiation and progression of the caries process, together with the response of the tooth to restorative treatment. This review reports on current research to elucidate the role of extracellular matrices of enamel, dentin, cementum, and bone. Attention is directed at the use of antibodies toward the small leucine-rich proteoglycans such as decorin and biglycan, in addition to their glycosaminoglycan chains. Antibodies are also being developed toward dental tissue-specific macromolecules such as phosphophoryn and amelogenin; the use of these antibodies will increase our understanding of the role of these macromolecules in mineralized tissues.

Effect of masticatory cycles on tooth compression and resultant leakage of amalgam retrofills

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of changes in tooth structure due to masticatory cycles on amalgam retrofillings performed to different cavity depths. Forty upper maxillary first molars were tested. In the obturated palatal root apical amalgam was inserted to different depths (1.5 and 3 mm). Eight casts were built, each having four sample molars. To block the teeth, the vestibular roots were embedded in resin (palatal root was left free). The eight remaining retrofilled teeth served as controls and were not submitted to occlusal forces. A mechanical device to simulate masticatory cycles subjected the teeth to 500,000 to three million cycles. Leakage was assessed from dye penetration observations. The values of microleakage were analyzed and compared, and strain gauges were used to assess structural modifications to the tooth. The leakage of all retrofilled obturations increased in correlation with the number of masticatory cycles. At three million cycles, root length compression was 0.3 +/- 0.02%. Leakage was significantly less for the deeper cavity preparations at all stages. This in vitro study suggests a significant effect by root compression due to masticatory loads on the leakage of retrofilled amalgam obturations.

The antiscorbutic action of l-ascorbic acid and d-isoascorbic acid (erythorbic acid) in the guinea pig

Female guinea pigs were fed a scorbutigenic diet supplemented with either L-ascorbic acid or D-isoascorbic acid or combinations of these. Their responses were judged by changes in body weight, serum alkaline phosphatase levels, wound healing, and tooth structure. Large additions (100 mg daily) of D-isoascorbic acid to the scorbutigenic diet resulted in normal growth over a 7-wk period and normal serum alkaline phosphatase levels, tooth structure development, and collagen formation after wounding. The addition of 0.5 or 5.0 mg of L-ascorbic acid to this high D-isoascorbic diet improved neither growth rate nor collagen deposition during wound healing. On the basis of changes in tooth structure, D-isoascorbic acid has 1/20 the potency of L-ascorbic acid. Its effect is additive to subminimal maintenance levels of L-ascorbic acid implying that there is no competitive inhibition in the utilization of the two compounds. The relatively weak activity of D-isoascorbic acid is probably due to poor transport to the tissues and ineffective binding to functional sites. This explains why the onset of scurvy is much more rapid after withdrawal of D-isoascorbic acid from the diet when it had been the sole antiscorbutic dietary constituent. It is concluded that D-isoascorbic acid is a "weakly" antiscorbutic agent on the basis that it is both poorly absorbed and retained by the tissue; that in fact it may, to the degree that it is taken up by the tissues and retained, be equal in antiscorbutic potency to L-ascorbic acid.
