Application of nanoparticles as novel adsorbents in blood purification strategies.

Blood purification therapy for patients overloaded with metabolic toxins or drugs still needs improvement. Blood purification therapies, such as in hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis can profit from a combined application with nanoparticles. In this review, the published literature is analyzed with respect to nanomaterials that have been customized and functionalized as nano-adsorbents during blood purification therapy. Liposomes possess a distinct combined structure composed of a hydrophobic lipid bilayer and a hydrophilic core. The liposomes which have enzymes in their aqueous core or obtain specific surface modifications of the lipid bilayer can offer appreciated advantages. Preclinical and clinical experiments with such modified liposomes show that they are highly efficient and generally safe. They may serve as indirect and direct adsorption materials both in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatment for patients with renal or hepatic failure. Apart from dialysis, nanoparticles made of specially designed metal and activated carbon have also been utilized to enhance the removal of solutes during hemoadsorption. Results are a superior adsorption capacity and a good hemocompatibility shown during treatment of patients with toxication or end-stage renal disease. In summary, nanomaterials are promising tools for improving the treatment efficacy of organ failure or toxication. KEY MESSAGES The pH-transmembrane liposomes and enzyme-loaded liposomes are two representatives of liposomes with modified aqueous inner core which have been put into practice in dialysis. Unmodified or physiochemically modified liposomal bilayers are ideal binders for lipophilic protein-bound uremic toxins or cholestatic solutes, thus liposome-supported dialysis could become the next-generation hemodialysis treatment of artificial liver support system. Novel nano-based sorbents featuring large surface area, high adsorption capacity and decent biocompatibility have shown promise in treatment of uremia, hyperbilirubinemia, intoxication, and sepsis. A major challenge of production lies in avoiding changes in physical and chemical properties induced by manufacturing and sterilizing procedures.

Influence of Ti-incorporated Zeolite Topology and Pore Condensation on Vapor Phase Propylene Epoxidation Kinetics with Gaseous H2O2.

Vapor-phase propylene (C3H6) epoxidation kinetics with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) strongly reflects the physical properties of Ti-incorporated zeolite catalysts and the presence of spectating molecules ("solvent") near active sites even without a bulk liquid phase. Steady-state turnover rates of C3H6 epoxidation and product selectivities vary by orders of magnitudes, depending on the zeolite silanol ((SiOH)x) density, pore topology (MFI, *BEA, FAU), and the quantity of condensed acetonitrile (CH3CN) molecules nearby active sites, under identical reaction mechanisms sharing activated H2O2 intermediates on Ti surfaces. Individual kinetic analyses for propylene oxide (PO) ring-opening, homogeneous diol oxidative cleavage, and homogeneous aldehyde oxidation reveal that secondary reaction kinetics following C3H6 epoxidation responds more sensitively to the changes in zeolite physical properties and pore condensation with CH3CN. Thus, higher PO selectivities achieved in hydrophilic Ti-MFI at steady-state reflect the preferential stabilization of transition states for C3H6 epoxidation (a primary reaction) relative to PO ring-opening and oxidative cleavage (secondary reactions) that solvation effects that reflect interactions among condensed CH3CN within pores and the extended pore structure.

Deposition time dependent structural and optical properties of polycrystalline [formula omitted] films

Sputtering-derived InGaZnO4 (IGZO) thin films were grown on quartz substrates and undergone post-deposition annealing at 700 °C for 2hr in N2 ambient. The influence of deposition time or film thickness on the morphological, structural and optical properties of polycrystalline IGZO thin films has been systematically investigated by means of characterization from field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and ultraviolet–visible–near infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) spectrophotometer. Results of AFM have shown that the root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness of the IGZO films increases from 0.888 to 2.640 nm as the deposition time is extended from 50 to 250min. Analysis of XRD indicates that all the films are in polycrystalline phase, with crystallites growing into larger size accordingly to increasing deposition time. Appealingly and scarcely ever reported, the XRD diffraction planes can be separated into three domains, such as (0 0 l), (1 0 l) and (1 1 l) with different growth thicknesses. Optical measurement suggests that the optical bandgap have redshifted from 3.55 to 3.31eV at longer deposition time. Related mechanics about the change in physical properties against deposition time have been elaborated in detail. The validity of Swanepoel method, 1983 in deriving the refractive index of thick IGZO films has also been discussed.

Oxidation-induced variations in the physical and fragmentation characteristics of exhaust soot from DMC-diesel blend: Effect of NO presence in the air atmosphere

This study investigated the changes in physical properties (including morphology, primary particle diameter, fractal dimension, and nanostructure) and fragmentation characteristics of exhaust soot from a modern direct injection diesel engine fueled with diesel (D100) and its blend with 7 vol% of dimethyl carbonate (DMC7) during oxidation processes in air and air-NO atmospheres. Soot particles (D100 soot and DMC7 soot) with specific oxidation degrees (0%, 20%, 50%, and 80%) were produced using a thermogravimetric analyzer, then applied to a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to generate images. The results exhibited that the morphology for D100 soot and DMC7 soot transformed similarly through oxidation, experiencing an increase in fractal dimension, and a decrease in primary particle diameter, while the introduction of NO to the air accelerated these transformations. Additionally, the nanostructure of both soot particles was gradually ordered through oxidation, as evidenced by longer fringe length, narrower separation distance, and lower tortuosity, while DMC7 soot showed lower order degree compared to D100 soot. Interestingly, the ordering processes of soot nanostructure were decelerated as NO was involved in the oxidation process. Furthermore, the aggregate fragmentation rate for both soot particles declined over the oxidation process, while the possibility for primary particle fragmentation increased overall. Moreover, DMC7 soot exhibited significantly lower aggregate fragmentation rate and higher possibility for primary particle fragmentation than D100 soot at the same oxidation stage. This suggests that DMC7 soot is more susceptible to internal oxidation compared to D100 soot. Furthermore, the presence of NO in the air promoted aggregate fragmentation, while reducing the possibility of primary particle fragmentation.

Disorder-Broadened Phase Boundary with Enhanced Amorphous Superconductivity in Pressurized In2Te5.

As an empirical tool in materials science and engineering, the iconic phase diagram owes its robustness and practicality to the topological characteristics rooted in the celebrated Gibbs phase law free variables (F) = components (C) - phases (P) + 2. When crossing the phase diagram boundary, the structure transition occurs abruptly, bringing about an instantaneous change in physical properties and limited controllability on the boundaries (F = 1). Here, the sharp phase boundary is expanded to an amorphous transition region (F = 2) by partially disrupting the long-range translational symmetry, leading to a sequential crystalline-amorphous-crystalline (CAC) transition in a pressurized In2Te5 single crystal. Through detailed in situ synchrotron diffraction, it is elucidated that the phase transition stems from the rotation of immobile blocks [In2Te2]2+, linked by hinge-like [Te3]2- trimers. Remarkably, within the amorphous region, the amorphous phase demonstrates a notable 25% increase of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), while the carrier concentration remains relatively constant. Furthermore, a theoretical framework is proposed revealing that the unconventional boost in amorphous superconductivity might be attributed to an intensified electron correlation, triggered by a disorder-augmented multifractal behavior. These findings underscore the potential of disorder and prompt further exploration of unforeseen phenomena on the phase boundaries.

Tuning structural, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of BTO-based ceramics through dual-site substitution

Different strategies for tuning the properties of ferroelectric materials have been employed for advancing electromechanical applications. Among several material synthesis techniques explored, site substitution is an effective approach. The present work focuses on Ba1-xCaxSnyTi1-yO3 (BCST) ceramics prepared by solid-state sintering route with different substitution levels (x = 0, 0.05 and y = 0, 0.09). The impact of site substitution on the properties of Barium Titanate (BTO), phase purity, structural analysis, chemical composition, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties have been studied. An ionic radii difference at A-site and B-site substitution is a key factor to achieve significant changes in physical and structural properties. X-ray diffraction patterns ensure the formation of pure phase perovskite structure in all the compositions. Raman spectroscopy indicates Ca substitution not only occurs at the A-site but also within the oxygen octahedra, adversely affecting the properties. Ca and Sn act as strong grain growth inhibitors, leading to a fine-grained and dense microstructure in BCST. While Ca substitution has a limited impact on the Curie temperature (TC), Sn substitution lowers TC in BST (54 °C) and BCST (50 °C) compared to BTO (126 °C). The Sn substitution results in the coexistence of multiple phases (rhombohedral, tetragonal and orthorhombic) in BST, enhancing its properties (ε' = 6118 at RT, Pr = 5.50 μC/cm2, Q11 = 0.060 m4/C2, d*33 = 526 pm/V) in comparison to BTO. These results acknowledge the role of substituents in lattice disruption, paving the way for chemistry-based materials design in the field of dielectric, actuator and energy storage applications.

Gas-bearing prediction in tight sandstone reservoirs based on multinetwork integration

Tight sandstone reservoir gas is an important component of unconventional natural gas exploration and production in China. However, tight sandstone reservoirs have the characteristics of poor lateral continuity, strong vertical heterogeneity, complex lithology, and large changes in physical properties, which means traditional oil and gas evaluation sometimes suffers from low accuracy. Therefore, a method for predicting the gas content of tight sandstone reservoirs is developed. This method selects seismic attributes through Pearson coefficients, combines multiple attribute information, and inputs it into a deep neural network. This study constructed MultipleNet by combining a convolutional neural network, a bidirectional gated neural unit network, and a self-attention mechanism. This network takes advantage of the complementary advantages of the preceding network modules and can more effectively mine information on various seismic attributes and improve gas-bearing prediction accuracy. This method is applied to actual data from a tight sandstone gas exploration area in the Sichuan Basin. Experimental results indicate that the results of well-side predictions using this method are consistent with well data, providing a new approach and perspective for predicting gas bearing in tight sandstone reservoirs.

Link Between Geometrical and Physical Property Changes Along Nankai Trough With Slow Earthquake Activity Revealed by Dense Reflection Survey

AbstractWe examined the possible factors affecting the spatial distribution of very low frequency earthquakes and tremors in the shallow megathrust of Nankai Trough (<30 km) using a dense network of prestack depth migrated profiles at the frontal wedge. Geometrical parameters examined were decollement roughness, taper angle, and underthrust thickness. Physical properties such as effective basal friction (μb) and pore pressure ratio (λ*) were calculated from the taper angle and p‐wave velocity. Regions of low λ* (0.39 ± 0.08) and smooth decollement showed no slow earthquake activity. In contrast, high activity of slow earthquakes was observed in areas with a rough decollement due to the presence of subducted seamounts or bathymetric highs. The low taper angle (3.8°) off Muroto where slow earthquakes also occur translates to a wide zone of low μb (0.21 ± 0.06) and high λ* (0.66 ± 0.06). However, our results also show that slow earthquakes don't always occur in areas with high λ*.

A continuous 18.6–10 ka record of seismic events revealed by Xinmocun lacustrine sediments at Diexi, eastern Tibetan Plateau

Five Ms 7.0 earthquakes (Wenchuan, Yushu, Lushan, Jiuzhaigou and Maudo) have occurred on the eastern Tibetan Plateau since 2008, and > 20 historical earthquakes (Ms ≥ 5.0) have also been recorded, demonstrating the strong seismic activity prevalent in this region. Owing to the geomorphology of the region, consisting of alpine valleys with a lack of Quaternary deposits, it is difficult to conduct paleo-earthquake research through the excavation of trenches. Lacustrine sediments are regarded as the most suitable archives for paleo-earthquake studies because they often comprise a detailed, long-term, and continuous environmental record. To assess the seismic activity of the Diexi, we studied a well-exposed outcrop of Xinmocun lacustrine sediments that included three sections (XMCⅠ (11.5 m), XMCⅡ (5.6 m), and XMCⅢ (11 m)) near Diexi Lake, moving from a lake shore to lake center environment, at the intersection between the Minjiang fault and Songpinggou fault. Taking into account the geodynamic setting of the area and its known tectonic activity, soft-sediment deformation structures, including load and flame structures, injection structures, ball structures, pseudo-nodules, boudinage structures, plunged sediment mixture, liquefied breccia and micro-faults, discovered within the sections are interpreted as seismites. High-resolution grain-size and magnetic susceptibility indicators were used to obtain a continuous record of the changes in physical properties within the three sections enabling the recognition of additional seismic events that did not result in soft-sediment deformation structures. Rapidly deposited layers with underlying soft-sediment deformation structures in the sections record five (XMCI, XMCII and XMCIII) seismic events; these comprise siliciclastic-enriched sandy sediment fluxes from earthquake-triggered landslides or dust of siliciclastic-enriched clastic materials. Isolated rapidly deposited layers (without underlying soft-sediment deformation structures) record 18 (XMCII), 12 (XMCI), and 21 (XMCIII) additional earthquake-induced inputs of detrital material into the lake. Optically stimulated luminescence and 14C dating of the XMCⅠ, XMCⅡ, and XMCⅢ sections indicate continuous sediment deposition from 19.4–9.9 ka, 15.5–10.1 ka, and 18.7–10.6 ka, respectively, and the seismic events recorded in these sections can be cross-correlated within the age error range. Hence, there are a total of 30 seismic events recorded within the Xinmocun sediments during the period 18.6–10 ka, suggests a weakly periodic pattern with an apparent recurrence time of ∼ 280 years. The Minjiang fault and Songpinggou fault are Holocene active faults with a risk of causing strong earthquakes. Due to the Diexi area is located at the intersection of the Minjiang fault and Songpinggou fault, and has frequent seismic activity, suggest a high seismic risk in the future.

Heat-Induced Changes in the Physical Properties of a New Premixed Calcium Silicate-Containing Root Canal Sealer: An In Vitro Study.

This study aimed to examine how heating affects the physical properties of a newly developed premixed calcium silicate-containing sealer (AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer; AHB), in comparison with EndoSequence BC Sealer (ES), AH Plus Jet (AH), and Pulp Canal Sealer. The setting time, flow, and film thickness were tested with or without heating at 100 °C for 30 or 60 s, in accordance with ISO6876:2012 standards. Ultrastructural and elemental analyses were performed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey post hoc test (α = 0.05). All sealers exhibited significantly shorter setting time and flow after heating at 100 °C for 30 and 60 s (p < 0.05). After heating, AHB showed a significantly higher film thickness compared to that of the other materials (p < 0.05). None of the tested properties of heat-applied AHB and ES met ISO standards, except the setting time in ES. The SEM/EDS results for AHB and ES were not affected by heating. The detected changes in physical properties can negatively impact the performance of premixed calcium silicate-containing sealers, particularly AHB, when warm vertical compaction is employed.

Ecological condition of marine waters in the area of dredging operations of the kashagan field, Kazakhstan

To determine the hydrophysical and hydrochemical parameters of sea water and their changes during dredging works in the north‐eastern part of the Caspian Sea along the Western Approach Route and near/inside block D, islands EPC‐2, EPC‐3, EPC‐4 and island A of the Kashagan field.Measurement of hydrophysical parameters: salinity, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, pH of seawater was carried out using a portable multi‐parameter analyser "Horiba‐U53" directly in the water column. Water transparency was determined using a Secchi disc. The depth of the water layer was determined using a sounder. Hydrochemical investigations were carried out for seven parameters, with all components sampled in the near‐surface and benthic horizons. Water samples were taken using probes or bathometers: BM‐48, GR‐18 or their analogues.Hydrochemical analyses of seawater samples for: biogens (NO2, NO3, NH4, Ntotal, and Ptotal), synthetic surfactants, phenols, hydrocarbons including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS), heavy metals, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). These were carried out in laboratory conditions using analytical equipment according to scientifically accepted methods.The data obtained as a result of the research allow us to draw the following conclusion: changes in the amount of suspended sediment in sea water lead to changes in physical and chemical properties of water (increase in turbidity, disturbance of sediment composition and properties), changes in biotopes, deterioration of oxygen regime, optical properties of water and temperature regime.

Soft Materials with Time-Programmed Changes in Physical Properties through Lyotropic Phase Transitions Induced by pH-Changing Reactions.

We present the development of time-programmable functional soft materials. The materials undergo reversible phase transitions between lyotropic phases with different topologies and symmetries, which in turn have very different physical properties: viscosity, diffusion, and optical transparency. Here, this behavior is achieved by combining pH-responsive lyotropic phases made from the lipid monoolein doped with 10% oleic acid, with chemical reactions that have well-defined controllable kinetics: autocatalytic urea-urease and methyl formate hydrolysis, which increase and decrease pH, respectively. In this case, we use small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and optical imaging to show temporally controlled transitions between the cloudy hexagonal phase, which is a two-dimensional (2D) array of cylindrical inverse micelles, and the transparent, highly viscous three-dimensional (3D) bicontinuous cubic phases. By combining these into a single reaction mixture where the pH increases and then decreases again, we can induce a sequential transformation cycle from hexagonal to cubic and back to hexagonal over several hours. The sample therefore changes from cloudy to transparent and back again as a proof-of-concept demonstration for a wider range of soft materials with time-programmable changes in physical properties.

Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) Investigation for Landslides: Case Study in the Hunan Province, China

Electrical resistivity tomography is a non-destructive and efficient geophysical exploration method that can effectively reveal the geological structure and sliding surface characteristics inside landslide bodies. This is crucial for analyzing the stability of landslides and managing associated risks. This study focuses on the Lijiazu landslide in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, employing the electrical resistivity tomography method to detect effectively the surrounding area of the landslide. The resistivity data of the deep strata were obtained, and the corresponding geophysical characteristics are inverted. At the same time, combined with the existing drilling data, the electrical structure of the landslide body is discussed in detail. The inversion results reveal significant vertical variations in the landslide body’s resistivity, reflecting changes in rock and soil physical properties. Combined with geological data analysis, it can be concluded that the sliding surface is located in the sandy shale formation. Meanwhile, by integrating various geological data, we can conclude that the landslide is currently in a creeping stage. During the rainy season, with rainfall infiltration, the landslide will further develop, posing a risk of instability. It should be promptly addressed through appropriate remediation measures. Finally, based on the results of two-dimensional inversion, this article constructs a three-dimensional surface morphology of the landslide body, which can more intuitively compare and observe the internal structure and material composition of the landslide body. This also serves as a foundation for the subsequent management and stability assessment of landslides, while also paving the way for exploring new perspectives on the formation mechanisms and theories of landslides.

Disaggregation and fibrillation during sol-gel transition of alginate hydrogels

The rheological and morphological characteristics of Ca-crosslinked alginate hydrogels with two different M/G ratios, α-L-guluronate (G)-rich and β-D-mannuronate (M)-rich, each with one alginic acid concentration, were investigated. It was found that the stiffness and elasticity of alginate hydrogels are derived from the thickness and density of the fibril network structures. In aqueous alginate solution, ball-like aggregates of alginates are present. Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the disaggregation of alginate aggregates and loose fibrillation occur in the early stage of the sol-gel transition. After these induction stage, direct gelation is finally caused by the formation of the egg-box junction. G-rich alginate hydrogel has a higher stiffness and a thicker and denser fibril network structure than M-rich alginate hydrogel. The former also exhibits faster and more significant changes in physical properties during the sol-gel transition.

Influences and implications of water-rock interaction on physical properties of geothermal reservoirs along the Red River Fault

Geothermal resources are composed of rock and water, in which water-rock interaction (WRI) has a great influence on the physical properties of thermal reservoirs. The Red River Fault is abundant in different kinds of geothermal resources and the main thermal reservoirs are sandstones and limestones. The study has used the water chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, mercury injection, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), physical parameters, and WRI simulation experiments to study the physical properties changes in thermal reservoirs. The pores of thermal reservoirs are mainly intragranular and intergranular pores, in which sandstones are dominated by micropores and mesopores while limestones are dominated by macropores. Through the WRI simulation experiment, the reservoirs have generated many dissolution pores and microfractures, of which the pore-throat connectivity has deteriorated. The changes of physical parameters can be divided into two stages with opposite trends, in which the first stage is controlled by temperature and pressure while the second stage is influenced by dissolution and precipitation. The study has suggested that the change stage of physical properties should be clarified to update the resource quantity dynamically in the development process and the components of fracturing fluids should be studied to achieve the optimal improvement of physical properties and reduce the adverse impact on pore-throat connectivity before the development engineering.

Time-dependent model for two-phase flow in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs: Time-varying permeability and relative permeability

For the ultra-high water-cut reservoirs, after long-term water injection exploitation, the physical properties of the reservoir change and the heterogeneity of the reservoir becomes increasingly severe, which further aggravates the spatial difference of the flow field. In this study, the displacement experiments were employed to investigate the variations in core permeability, porosity, and relative permeability after a large amount of water injection. A relative permeability endpoint model was proposed by utilizing the alternating conditional expectation (ACE) transformation to describe the variation in relative permeability based on the experimental data. Based on the time dependent models for permeability and relative permeability, the traditional oil-water two-phase model was improved and discretized using the mimetic finite difference method (MFD). The two cases were launched to confirm the validation of the proposed model. The impact of time-varying physical features on reservoir production performance was studied in a real water flooding reservoir. The experimental results indicate that the overall relative permeability curve shifts to the right as water injection increases. This shift corresponds to a transition towards a more hydrophilic wettability and a decrease in residual oil saturation. The endpoint model demonstrates excellent accuracy and can be applied to time-varying simulations of reservoir physics. The impact of variations in permeability and relative permeability on the reservoir production performance yields two distinct outcomes. The time-varying permeability of the reservoir results in intensified water channeling and poor development effects. On the other hand, the time-varying relative permeability enhances the oil phase seepage capacity, facilitating oil displacement. The comprehensive time-varying behavior is the result of the combined influence of these two parameters, which closely resemble the actual conditions observed in oil field exploitation. The time-varying simulation technique of reservoir physical properties proposed in this paper can continuously and stably characterize the dynamic changes of reservoir physical properties during water drive development. This approach ensures the reliability of the simulation results regarding residual oil distribution.

Theoretical Understanding of Effects of Operating Modes on the Performance Durability of Solid Oxide Cells: A Comparison between Potentiostatic and Galvanostatic Operations

In solid oxide cells (SOCs), the choice between galvanostatic (constant current) and potentiostatic (constant voltage) modes does not significantly affect the performance of SOCs as long as the cell components remain unchanged and intact. However, the degradation of cell components, which leads to changes in electrochemical and physical properties of the cell, elevates the importance of the selected operating mode. This paper aims to investigate the effects of galvanostatic and potentiostatic operating modes on the evolving properties of SOCs and their subsequent influence on performance durability. Employing non-equilibrium thermodynamic analysis, a crucial approach for understanding the degradation phenomena within an active electrochemical system, this study aims to provide in-depth insights into how these operating modes affect the longevity and efficacy of SOCs. Key findings include: In cases where oxygen electrode (OE) degradation is accelerated by higher partial pressure of oxygen ( pO2 ), operating under constant voltage electrolysis can mitigate the high pO2 at the OE|electrolyte (OE|EL) interface. Conversely, if OE degradation occurs more rapidly under a lower pO2, constant current electrolysis is more effective in suppressing degradation by achieving a high pO2 at the OE|EL interface. For degradation of the fuel electrode (FE) due to higher pO2, constant current electrolysis is beneficial for more stable performance, which helps maintain low pO2 at the FE|EL interface. When FE degradation is accelerated by lower pO2, constant voltage electrolysis can avert low pO2 at the FE|EL interface. In practical scenarios, more complex degradation mechanisms come into play, especially when pO2 significantly deviates from initial conditions. Degradation in one electrode can influence pO2 in the other electrode, a phenomenon more pronounced in potentiostatic than in galvanostatic electrolysis.

Dynamics of soil penetration resistance, moisture depletion pattern and crop productivity determined by mechanized cultivation and lifesaving irrigation in zero till blackgram

Rice fallow black gram is grown under the residual moisture situation as a relay crop in heavy texture montmorillonite clay soil under zero till condition. Since the crop is raised during post monsoon season, the crop often experiences terminal stress due to limited water availability and no rainfall. Surface irrigation in montmorillonite clay soil is determent to pulse crop as inundation causes wilting. Therefore, zero tilled rice fallow black gram has to be supplemented with micro irrigation at flowering stage (35 days after sowing) to alleviate moisture stress and to increase the productivity as well. Hence micro farm pond in a corner of one ha field was created to harvest the rain water during monsoon season and the same was utilized to supplement the crop with lifesaving irrigation through mobile sprinkler at flowering stage for the crop grown under conservation agriculture. Soil cracking is also the common phenomena of montmorillonite clay soil where evaporations losses would be more through crack surfaces. The present study was therefore conducted to study the changes in the soil physical properties, crop establishment and productivity in conjunction with mechanized sowing and harvest and supplemental mobile sprinkler irrigation. Sowing of black gram by broadcasting 10 days prior to the manual harvest of rice, manual drawn single row seed drill after the machine harvest of rice and sowing by broadcasting at 4 days prior to machine harvest of rice was experimented separately and in combination with lifesaving irrigation. Results indicated that the number of wheel passes and lifesaving irrigation had a very strong impact on soil penetration resistance and soil moisture. Combined harvester followed by no till seed drill increased the soil penetration resistance in all the layers (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm). Two passes of wheel increased the mean soil penetration resistance from 407 KPa to 502 KPa. The soil penetration resistance (0–5 cm) at harvest shown that black gram sown by manual broadcasting 10 days prior to manual harvest of paddy supplemented with life irrigation on 30 DAS reduced the soil penetration resistance from 690 Kpa to 500 Kpa, 740 Kpa to 600 Kpa and 760 Kpa to 620 Kpa respectively at 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm layer. In general, moisture depletion rate was rapid in the surface layer of 0–5 cm as compared to other layers of 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm up to 30 DAS (Flowering stage). The moisture content and the soil penetration resistance had an inverse relationship. The soil penetration resistance also had an inverse relationship with the root length in which the root length lowers as the soil penetration resistance increases. The soil crack measured at 60 DAS was deeper with no till seed drill (width of 3.94 cm and depth of 13.67 cm) which was mainly due to surface layer compaction. The relative water content, specific leaf weight and chlorophyll content were significantly improved through the supplemental irrigation given on 30 DAS irrespective of crop establishment methods. The results further indicated that compaction of ploughed layer in the moist soil due to combined harvester and no till seed drill had a negative impact on yield (457 kg ha−1), which was improved by 19.03 per cent due to increased soil moisture with supplemental irrigation. The mean yield increase across different treatments due to supplemental lifesaving irrigation through mobile sprinkler was 20.4 per cent.

Can saturated paste be used to predict bulk density in annual cropping systems in California?

AbstractSoil bulk density (BD) is important for measuring changes in soil chemical, physical, and biological properties; however, the measurement is tedious to collect and requires specialized equipment. Database measurements for soil surface BD do not always correspond to present field conditions as field management can alter BD in time. Saturation percentage (SP) is a routine lab measurement. The objectives of this study are to (1) understand if a relationship between BD and SP can be developed and (2) build a model that predicts BD based on a routine low‐cost lab analysis. We collected 83 soil samples from different experimental sites around California's Central Valley. At each site, BD, SP, soil organic matter (OM), and soil total organic carbon were measured. A set of models were generated and compared based on their Akaike information criterion (AIC) and adjusted R2. The best two models are presented in this paper, and their accuracy and precision in estimating BD were further compared by calculating the root mean square error (RMSE) and the R2 of the predicted versus values measured in the field. We determined that a strong relationship between BD and SP exists (R2 = 0.70) and that a cubic model that includes SP and OM resulted in the best model to predict BD in California soils. Inclusion of additional data may further strengthen this model or make it applicable for other grower regions.
