Comparative Study on the Determination of Chlorophyll-a in Lake Phytoplankton by a YSI Multi-Parameter Water Quality Meter and Laboratory Spectrophotometric Method

Algal blooms caused by eutrophication are a major global problem, and the monitoring and prediction of algal densities in lakes are important indicators of eutrophication management. However, the reliability of the commonly used chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) to characterize phytoplankton density in lake environments needs to be further investigated. In this paper, we sampled and analyzed 365 samples from nine plateau lakes in Yunnan Province during the dry and rainy seasons. The Chl-a data measured by the laboratory spectrophotometric method and the portable YSI multi-parameter water quality meter (YSI) directly used in the field were compared, and regression analysis and correlation analysis with phytoplankton density were performed. Most of the Chl-a values measured by the laboratory instrument were greater than those measured by the YSI, and the correlation between the two methods was weak (0.492, p < 0.001). The correlation between Chl-a and phytoplankton density measured by the YSI reached 0.67 (p < 0.001) in the dry season, while the laboratory methods used to measure Chl-a to characterize phytoplankton density may have led to an overestimation of phytoplankton density due to nonspecific sources of Chl-a. However, both methods are relatively inaccurate for characterizing phytoplankton density. For different trophic states of lakes, nutrient concentration changes affect the Chl-a concentration of phytoplankton. During different seasons, changes in the fluorescence intensity of phytoplankton in response to environmental conditions prevent the YSI results from reflecting the authentic phytoplankton density. Furthermore, high species diversity can lead to inconsistent changes in Chl-a and phytoplankton because the content of Chl-a in individual cells of different phytoplankton is different. The relationship between Chl-a and phytoplankton density was species specific. Therefore, when applying Chl-a to characterize phytoplankton density in lakes, it is necessary to consider environmental conditions, phytoplankton community structure and other practical conditions. In addition, laboratory analytical methods and instrumental techniques and instruments need to be improved.

Warming induced shade tolerance to become a key trait in invasion success of free-floating plant Pistia stratiotes over the native Hydrocharis morsus-ranae

Changes in nutrient concentration, temperature and light intensity due to climate change can alter the species composition of aquatic ecosystems, since global climate change can intensify the process of eutrophication. Eutrophication can enhance the biological invasion and the distribution of alien aquatic plants. Here we investigated the competition ability of alien Pistia stratiotes and native Hydrocharis morsus-ranae and the effect of different light intensities, temperatures and nutrient concentrations on the functional traits of the two species. In short term (8 days) monoculture experiment, we applied low (0.5mgL-1 N; 0.05mgL-1 P) and high nutrient concentrations (2mgL-1 N; 0.2mgL-1 P), four different light intensities (25-295 μmol m−2 s−1) as well as cold and warm (21.5; 27.5 ± 0.5°C) water treatments in full factorial design. In mixed cultures we cultivated the plants for 28 days with various biomass ratio, in shaded and well illuminated conditions, at a high nutrient concentration (4mgL-1 N 1mgL-1 P). In monocultures, the relative growth rate of P. stratiotes in warm water was significantly higher than that of H. morsus-ranae, however, this difference was not significant in colder water. In the co-culture experiment, P. stratiotes had significantly higher growth rate compared to H. morsus-ranae regardless of initial plant biomass ratio. Under shaded (65 ± 5 μmol m−2 s−1) conditions, P. stratiotes outcompeted H. morsus-ranae, resulting in its decay. Experimental results imply that with elevated temperature, the spread of alien P. stratiotes can be expected. Furthermore, under shaded conditions, P. stratiotes has a higher chance of occupying the water surface over the native plant H. morsus-ranae.

Elevated CO2 exacerbates the risk of methylmercury exposure in consuming aquatic products: Evidence from a complex paddy wetland ecosystem

Elevated CO2 levels and methylmercury (MeHg) pollution are important environmental issues faced across the globe. However, the impact of elevated CO2 on MeHg production and its biological utilization remains to be fully understood, particularly in realistic complex systems with biotic interactions. Here, a complete paddy wetland microcosm, namely, the rice-fish-snail co-culture system, was constructed to investigate the impacts of elevated CO2 (600 ppm) on MeHg formation, bioaccumulation, and possible health risks, in multiple environmental and biological media. The results revealed that elevated CO2 significantly increased MeHg concentrations in the overlying water, periphyton, snails and fish, by 135.5%, 66.9%, 45.5%, and 52.1%, respectively. A high MeHg concentration in periphyton, the main diet of snails and fish, was the key factor influencing the enhanced MeHg in aquatic products. Furthermore, elevated CO2 alleviated the carbon limitation in the overlying water and proliferated green algae, with subsequent changes in physico-chemical properties and nutrient concentrations in the overlying water. More algal-derived organic matter promoted an enriched abundance of Archaea-hgcA and Deltaproteobacteria-hgcA genes. This consequently increased the MeHg in the overlying water and food chain. However, MeHg concentrations in rice and soil did not increase under elevated CO2, nor did hgcA gene abundance in soil. The results reveal that elevated CO2 exacerbated the risk of MeHg intake from aquatic products in paddy wetland, indicating an intensified MeHg threat under future elevated CO2 levels.

Facilitation drives tree seedling survival at alpine treelines

Abstract Alpine treelines are considered ecological monitors recording the impacts of climate change on trees and forests. To date, most treeline research has focused on how climate change drives treeline dynamics. However, little is known about how biotic interactions mediate treeline shifts, particularly in the case of tree recruitment, a bottleneck of treeline dynamics. We hypothesized that interspecific and intraspecific facilitation determined the establishment and survival of tree seedlings at alpine treelines. To test this hypothesis, 630 Abies georgei var. smithii seedlings with different ages (4–6, 7–9, and 10–15 years old) were transplanted into three growth habitats (canopy-in, canopy-out, and meadow) across the alpine treeline ecotone (4300–4500 m) in the Sygera Mountains, on the southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Microclimate, height growth, mortality rates, and leaf functional traits of transplanted seedlings were measured over three years. We found that the variations in leaf functional traits were driven by microclimate. After the transplantation, the leaf concentrations of soluble sugars and starch and C:P ratio increased, whereas leaf size decreased. The resource use of seedlings gradually shifted to a more conservative strategy as indicated by changes in non-structural carbohydrates and nutrient concentrations. Radiation, temperature, and moisture conditions, mediated by plants interactions, influenced seedling mortality and annual growth by affecting leaf morphological traits. Our findings illustrate how facilitation plays a crucial role in altering solar radiation and leaf trait functioning, determining seedling survival and growth at alpine treelines. We provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms for tree establishment and alpine treeline shifts in response to climate change.

Assessment of Green Manure Crops and their Impacts on Mineralizable Nitrogen and Changes of Nutrient Contents in the Soil

To evaluate the green manure crops those can promote soil properties and the ability of nitrogen (N) mineralization in paddy soil, a pot experiment was conducted at the Department of Agronomy, Yezin Agricultural University, Naypyidaw, Myanmar from April to August 2022. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Ten green manure crops were sown as treatments: soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr), green gram (Vigna radiata L. Wildzek.), black gram (Vigna mungo L. Hepper.), cowpea (Vigna catjang), cowpea white (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), lab lab bean (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet.), mayflower bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), rice bean (Vigna umbellata), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), and dhaincha (Sesbania bispinosa (Jacq.)). At the flowering stage, various green manures were incorporated into the soil, and their growth characters were measured along with the mineralizable N, total N, phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) contents of the soil. The results indicated that rice bean, sunn hemp, and dhaincha had higher shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, and dry weight compared to other varieties. In addition, they contain a higher percentage of total N content and total P2O5, and consequently, its C:N ratio was lower. After incorporating green manures into the soil, the mineralizable N increased gradually from 0 weeks to 10 weeks and then, the nutrient values decreased. Among green manures, sunn hemp, dhaincha, and rice bean were found to have higher mineralizable N (%) and applicable mineralized N than others. In conclusion, the incorporation of green manures into the soil improves the N, P2O5, and K2O contents of the soil, along with the mineralizable N content. Among green manure crops, dhaincha, rice bean, and sunn hemp were superior to other varieties due to higher biomass yield, mineralizable N (%), and chemical compositions, especially total N content.

Changes in Nutrient Content and Physicochemical Properties of Cavendish Bananas var. Pei Chiao during Ripening

Banana is a typical tropical fruit that is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, and consumed daily because of its superior nutritional profile. This study aimed to investigate the changes in bananas’ physicochemical properties and nutritional composition from ripening stages 1 to 9. The analysis included color (peel and flesh), texture, total starch content, resistant starch content, free sugar content, minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron, phosphorus), and vitamin content. At the same time, the browning enzyme activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase, oxalic acid, and tannin were also measured. In this study, the banana peel gradually changed from dark green to light green to yellow during the ripening process, eventually appearing with many black spots, while the pulp color changed from white to light yellow and decreased in brightness. The pulp became softer with a prolonged ripening period, which was inconsistent with the time point of peel color change (ripening period 4–5). However, total starch content decreased from 74% to 31%, resistant starch originally at 32% gradually decreased to 5%, and free sugar content gradually increased with increasing ripening period. Vitamin C content and PPO activity decreased significantly during the ripening period, while other vitamins and minerals did not change significantly. In contrast, oxalic acid, tannin content, and peroxidase activity were negatively correlated with the ripening period. Therefore, this study reveals the changes in the nutrient content of bananas at different ripening stages, which may provide helpful information for researchers and producers to identify suitable raw materials for producing stable and high-nutrition-value banana-related foods during the peak raw material abundance seasons while reducing business risk.

Fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus in fouling communities on artificial offshore structures

The number of offshore artificial structures in the North Sea is continuously increasing. Apart from the structures that have been added to the marine environment accidentally (e.g., shipwrecks), structures are also deliberately developed to meet the increasing needs for renewable energy. These structures provide habitat for fouling organisms. The fouling communities vary in abundance and composition based on location, depth, and structure age. Most fouling species filter particles from the water column, changing phytoplankton production and affecting larval settlement success, while releasing ammonium that can fuel phytoplankton growth as well as (pseudo)faeces that enriches the seabed, changing local biogeochemical cycles.Our study used in-situ incubation chambers to investigate oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphate fluxes associated with fouling organisms to improve understanding of these changes in biogeochemical cycles. Divers used incubation chambers (domes) on shipwrecks in the southern North Sea where over 55 years mature fouling communities have established. A series of water samples was collected from each dome during deployment to measure the change in concentration of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate. All fauna enclosed in the domes was collected after each measurement for further analysis.The full macrofauna dataset contained 65 unique species on 4 shipwrecks (25 to 50 species per sample). Abundance ranged from 2187 to 59,427 individuals per sample (683 cm2). On average, a decrease in oxygen concentration of 126 μmol/g ash free dry weight/h was found. The sequential water samples also showed clear changes in nutrient concentration with time in all incubations. The largest changes were observed with high fouling community abundances and biomass. Ammonium, nitrite, and phosphate always increased, with 1.5-to-5-fold increases from start to end of the incubation, while for nitrate both an efflux and influx were measured. Oxygen decreased in all incubations. Mean fluxes (all in μmol per m2 per hour with standard error) were significant for ammonium (945 ± 300), nitrite (80 ± 30), phosphate (61 ± 8), and oxygen (−11,794 ± 3289), but not for nitrate (−206 ± 122). Per gram AFDW, only ammonium (12.7 ± 3.5) and oxygen (−126 ± 48) had fluxes that differed significantly from zero.Compared to average seabed (sandy bottom) oxygen demand and community fluxes from previous studies, the observed fluxes were high. Our findings resembled those from temperate biogenic reef studies. Further data collection across a larger spatial and temporal scale is needed to fully understand offshore structure effects on marine environments.

Rehydration of degraded wetlands: Understanding drivers of vegetation community trajectories

AbstractDegradation of wetland ecosystems results from loss of hydrologic connectivity, nutrient enrichment, and altered fire regimes, among other factors. It is uncertain how drivers of wetland ecosystem processes and wetland vegetation communities interact in reversing the ecological trajectory from degraded to restored conditions. We analyzed biogeochemical and vegetation data collected in wetlands of the Florida Everglades at the start of (2015) and during (2018 and 2021) the initial stages of rehydration. Our objectives were to analyze the allocation of carbon and nutrients among ecosystem compartments and correlated trajectories of vegetation community change following rehydration, to identify the drivers of change, including fire, and analyze macrophyte species‐specific responses to drivers. We expected to see changes in vegetation toward more hydric communities that would differ based on wetland baseline conditions and the magnitude of the hydrologic change. During the study period, both length of inundation and surface water depth increased throughout wetlands in the region, and four fires occurred, which affected 51% of the sampling locations. We observed biogeochemical shifts in the wetland landscape, driven by both hydrology and fire. Total phosphorus concentrations in soil and flocculent detrital material decreased, while soil carbon:phosphorus and nitrogen:phosphorus mass ratios increased at sites further away from water management infrastructure. Transitions in vegetation communities were driven by an increase in hydroperiods and by the distinct changes in nutrient concentrations or soil stoichiometric ratios in each subregion. The abundance of macrophyte species typical of short‐hydroperiod prairies strongly decreased, while dominant long‐hydroperiod species, such as Eleocharis cellulosa, expanded. Fire facilitated the expansion of thickly vegetated plumes of invasive Typha at sites close to the water inflow sources. Overall, restored hydrology shifted vegetation community composition toward higher abundance of long‐hydroperiod species within six years. In contrast, removal of invasive vegetation controlled by soil phosphorus concentrations will likely require long‐term and interactive restoration strategies.

Modeling of the Process of Functioning of the Digester of a Biogas Plant during Methane Fermentation of Сow Manure

Ensuring high and stable biogas output during digester operation is ensured by regulating and monitoring values of control parameters. The purpose of article is to develop model of process of functioning of digester during methane mono-fermentation of cow manure with establishment of values of control parameters. A solution to model was found to obtain dynamics of biogas yield, while experimental and simulated dynamics of biogas yield were as close as possible. The developed model is system of differential equations that describe changes in concentrations of substrate nutrients , methanogen biomass and dynamics of biogas output in digester. The system of differential equations was solved in Simulink package , obtaining dependencies and . The dependence was compared with results of studies conducted on laboratory biogas plant with digester with useful volume of 30 liters at temperature of 37°C with periodic substrate loading system. By selecting parameters of model, resulting function was compared with similar one obtained experimentally. It has been established that in model of digester functioning process during methane mono-fermentation of cow manure, following coefficients have following meaning: bacterial growth rate m3/(kg day); substrate assimilation ; bacterial growth rate m3/(kg day); rate of conversion of nutrients into biogas m6/kg. The obtained values of coefficients make it possible to carry out modeling of process of methane mono-digestion of cow manure and predict biogas yield at different initial values of concentration of methanogen biomass, concentration of substrate nutrients, digester volume, which is used in industrial biogas plants.

Biosurfactant-Assisted Phytoremediation of Diesel-Contaminated Soil by Three Different Legume Species

This study aims to assess the impact of HydroBreak PLUS biosurfactant on the phytoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil by three legume plant species: Medicago sativa, Lotus corniculatus, and Melilotus albus. Legumes were grown in soil contaminated with diesel (4.0 g kg−1, 6.0 g kg−1) for 90 days, and the changes in soil diesel and nutrient concentrations, plant growth, and physiological parameters were measured. Diesel negatively affected the biomass production of all legumes, though the reduction in growth rate was observed only in L. corniculatus and M. albus. L. corniculatus had the highest diesel removal rate of 93%, M. albus had the lowest of 87.9%, and unplanted treatments had significantly lower diesel removal rates (up to 66.5%). The biosurfactant mitigated diesel-induced reduction in plant shoot and root weight and an increase in L. corniculatus root biomass (24.2%) were observed at 4.0 g kg−1 diesel treatment. The use of biosurfactant accelerated diesel removal from the soil, though the effect was diesel soil concentration and plant species-dependent. In unplanted treatments, the diesel removal rates increased by 16.4% and 6.9% in the treatments with 4 and 6 mg kg−1, respectively. The effect of biosurfactants on diesel removal by plants was less pronounced and reached 4.6% and 3.2% in the treatments with 4 and 6 mg kg−1, respectively. The study revealed that the phytoremediation efficiency could not be directly linked to plant physiological parameters as only M. sativa changes in plant growth corresponded well with photosystem II performance. Implementation of legumes and biosurfactants has a positive effect on soil quality by its enrichment with inorganic P and soluble phenols, while no enrichment in NO3− and NH4+ was observed.

Contrasting depth‐related fine root plastic responses to soil warming in a subtropical Chinese fir plantation

Abstract Warming‐induced soil drought, especially in topsoil, may enlarge the spatial mismatch between nutrients and water along the soil profile, which impedes the uptake of not only water but also nutrients by trees. Therefore, coordinating the acquisition of soil water and nutrients along the soil profile is an important strategy for trees to cope with global warming. This study examined soil depth‐related changes in nutrient concentrations, biomass and morphology of fine roots in a Chinese fir plantation after 3 years of large‐scale manipulative soil warming. Soil warming (ambient +4°C) increased fine root nitrogen (N) concentrations but decreased fine root phosphorus (P) concentrations across soil depths. Warming did not affect total fine root biomass and its vertical distribution. At the 0–10 cm depth, warming increased specific root length (SRL), specific root area (SRA), fine root diameter (RD) and root length density (RLD) but reduced root tissue density (RTD). In the 40–60 cm layer, warming reduced RD, SRL and RLD while increasing RTD mainly for roots of the 1–2 mm diameter class. Synthesis. We concluded that roots of Chinese fir plantations could adapt to warming‐induced moderate water stress through contrasting depth‐related root morphological adjustments, probably to optimize the acquisition of both soil water and nutrients. The results of this study are crucial for understanding the adaptation strategies of subtropical forests under future climate conditions.

Microbial nutrient limitation along a 2-million-year dune chronosequence

Long-term ecosystem development is characterized by a switch from nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) limitation of plant communities as soils age, which leads to changes in plant biomass, diversity, and foliar nutrient concentrations. Similar effects occur belowground, although the extent to which nutrient availability is the primary driver of long-term changes in soil microbial communities remains uncertain. To investigate this, we assessed proxies for soil microbial nutrient limitation along the Jurien Bay dune chronosequence in Western Australia, where a long-term decline in P availability is reflected in strong variation in plant and microbial community composition over 2 million years of soil development. We quantified carbon (C), N, and P in the soil microbial biomass, assayed soil enzymes involved in the acquisition of those nutrients from soil organic matter, and used microbial stoichiometric ratios and vector analysis of enzyme activities to assess whether long-term changes in soil nutrient availability are reflected in nutrient demand by soil microbes. Concentrations of microbial nutrients peaked in Holocene soils (1–6.5 ky), although differences in microbial P were not significant. There were no significant differences in microbial nutrient ratios (C:N, C:P, and N:P) along the chronosequence. Acid phosphatase activity increased continually throughout the chronosequence, while the activities of leucine aminopeptidase and β-glucosidase were greatest in Holocene soils and declined with increasing soil age. Corresponding vector lengths indicated greater investment in C-degrading enzymes in Holocene soils (≤6.5 ky), while vector angles indicated greater investment in the acquisition of P compared with N in Pleistocene soils (≥120 ky). Overall, these findings show that changes in nutrient availability during long-term pedogenesis at Jurien Bay are reflected in microbial investment in nutrient acquisition, but that the soil microbial biomass exhibits a remarkable degree of homeostasis despite major shifts in nutrient availability and community composition over 2 million years of ecosystem development.

Zooplankton in northern lakes show taxon‐specific responses in fatty acids across climate‐productivity and ecosystem size gradients

AbstractNorthern lakes are facing rapid environmental alterations—including warming, browning, and/or changes in nutrient concentrations—driven by climate change. These environmental changes can have profound impacts on the synthesis and trophic transfer of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which are important biochemical molecules for consumer growth and reproduction. Zooplankton are a key trophic link between phytoplankton and fish, but their biochemical responses to environmental change are not well understood. In this study, we assess the trends in fatty acid (FA) composition of zooplankton taxa among 32 subarctic and temperate lakes across broad climate‐productivity and ecosystem size gradients. We found that genus‐level taxonomy explained most FA variability in zooplankton (54%), suggesting that environmental changes that alter the taxonomic composition also affect the FA composition of zooplankton communities. Furthermore, the FA responses and their underlying environmental drivers differed between cladocerans and copepods. Cladocerans, including widespread Bosmina spp. and Daphnia spp., showed pronounced responses across the climate‐productivity gradient, with abrupt declines in PUFA, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid and arachidonic acid in warmer, browner, and more eutrophic lakes. Conversely, calanoid copepods had high and relatively stable PUFA levels across the gradient. In addition, all zooplankton taxa increased in stearidonic acid levels in larger lakes where PUFA‐rich cryptophytes were more abundant. Overall, our results suggest that climate‐driven environmental alterations pose heterogeneous impacts on PUFA levels among zooplankton taxa, and that the negative impacts of climate warming are stronger for cladocerans, especially so in small lakes.

Global change alters coastal plankton food webs by promoting the microbial loop: An inverse modelling and network analysis approach on a mesocosm experiment

Marine organisms are currently, and will continue to be, exposed to the simultaneous effects of multiple environmental changes. Plankton organisms form the base of pelagic marine food webs and are particularly sensitive to ecosystem changes. Thus, warming, acidification, and changes in dissolved nutrient concentrations have the potential to alter these assemblages, with consequences for the entire ecosystem. Despite the growing number of studies addressing the potential influence of multiple drivers on plankton, global change may also cause less obvious alterations to the networks of interactions among species. Using inverse analyses applied to data collected during a mesocosm experiment, we aimed to compare the ecological functioning of coastal plankton assemblages and the interactions within their food web under different global change scenarios. The experimental treatments were based on the RCP 6.0 and 8.5 scenarios developed by the IPCC, which were extended (ERCP) to integrate the future predicted changes in coastal water nutrient concentrations. Overall, we identified that the functioning of the plankton food web was rather similar in the Ambient and ERCP 6.0 scenarios, but substantially altered in the ERCP 8.5 scenario. Using food web modelling and ecological network analysis, we identified that global change strengthens the microbial loop, with a decrease of energy transfer efficiency to higher trophic levels. Microzooplankton responded as well by an increased degree of herbivory in their diet and represented, compared to mesozooplankton, by far the main top-down pressure on primary producers. We also observed that the organisation of the food web and its capacity to recycle carbon was higher under the ERCP 8.5 scenario, but flow diversity and carbon path length were significantly reduced, illustrating an increased food web stability at the expense of diversity. Here, we provide evidence that if global change goes beyond the ERCP 6.0 scenario, coastal ecosystem functioning will be subjected to dramatic changes.

Effect of conduction drying on nutrient and fatty acid profiles: a comparative analysis of hazelnuts and walnuts

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in the nutrient and fatty acid profiles of hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) and walnuts (Juglans regia) subjected to continuous drying. Samples from two consecutive years (2020 and 2021) were analyzed for nutritional value both before and after conduction drying. Thermal conduction drying was performed at 60 and 80°C at intervals of 15, 30, 45, and 60 min. The results showed that hazelnuts had increased ash, protein (from 16.4 to 18.7%), carbohydrate and starch content, while walnuts had a higher pH and fat content (from 60.97 to 71.02%). After drying, increasing temperatures resulted in significant changes in nutrient concentrations for both nuts, including changes in ash, protein, fat (hazelnuts from 58.69 to 71.48% at 60°C for 60 min), carbohydrate and starch content, and pH. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid content varied by sample and year, with notable trends such as the increase in oleic acid in walnuts from 82.26 to 83.67%. Longer drying times and higher temperatures correlated with an increase in monounsaturated fatty acids and a decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acids in both nut types. In conclusion, conduction drying, especially at higher temperatures and longer durations, significantly affects the nutrient and fatty acid profiles of hazelnuts and walnuts. The study provides new insights into the effects of drying conditions on the nutrient composition and fatty acid profiles of hazelnuts and walnuts and reveals significant changes that warrant further investigation. It sets the stage for future research to extend these findings to other nut species and alternative drying processes and highlights the importance of optimizing processing parameters for improved health benefits and sustainability.

Evidence of parental transfer of nanoplastics in pea (Pisum sativum) plants

The increasing abundance of nanoplastics in the environment is a cause of serious concern and its acute and chronic effects on ecosystems need to be thoroughly investigated. Toward this end, this study investigated the parental transfer of nanoplastics by chronically exposing Pisum sativum (pea) plants to nanoplastics through soil medium. We observed the presence of nanoplastics in harvested fruits and a subsequent generation of plants replanted in uncontaminated soil using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The fluorescence was located in the cell wall of the vascular bundles, but not in the epidermis, indicating the parental transfer of nanoplastics. In addition, we determined the effects of nanoplastics on the health of subsequent plant generations by estimating the reproductive factors and measuring the content of individual nutrients in peas. Decreases in crop yield and fruit biomass, in addition to changes in nutrient content and composition, were noted. The transgenerational effects of nanoplastics on plants can profoundly impact terrestrial ecosystems, including both plant species and their predators, raising critical safety concerns. Our findings highlight the evidence of parental transfer of nanoplastics in the soil through plants and shows that the chronic effects of nanoplastics on plants may pose a threat to the food supply.

Groundwater levels, climate and anthropogenic factors affect the hydrology and water quality of an intermittent and a regulated subtropical stream

AbstractStream hydrology and water quality are highly interconnected and impacted by climate, land use and geology. We examined this connection using monitoring data from 2000 to 2019 for two streams with contrasting hydrological regimes—intermittent and regulated perennial—in subtropical Queensland, Australia. Our main objective was to evaluate relationships between groundwater levels, climate and flow regulation on the hydrology and water quality of an intermittent and a regulated subtropical stream. In intermittently flowing Lockyer Creek, flow was highly dependent on groundwater levels and occurred when the aquifer was recharged to elevations exceeding the upper 90‐percentile value. With 9.4% of the catchment area in irrigated horticulture, flow in Lockyer Creek was also likely to be reduced by drawdown of the aquifer for irrigation, with no flow for 30% to 81% of days over the observation period for stations in Lockyer Creek. In contrast, flow in the mid‐Brisbane River was continuous, regulated by discharge from a large upstream dam. Nutrient and suspended sediment concentrations in Lockyer Creek were generally higher than in the mid‐Brisbane River, likely associated with runoff from agricultural areas adjacent to the stream, while the upstream dam likely reduced the concentration and variability of nutrients and suspended sediment in the mid‐Brisbane River. During periods of low flow in the mid‐Brisbane River, longitudinal changes in nutrient and suspended sediment concentrations occurred, notably a significant decrease in total and dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations downstream (p < 0.05), indicating a possible effect of in‐stream algal uptake and denitrification. This study highlights the impact of human modifications on stream hydrology and water quality in the face of climate change. The findings can inform decision‐making on groundwater irrigation or dam release control for water security.

Leaves stimulate aquatic phosphorus uptake by dark‐grown but not by light‐grown microbial communities in sediments: A laboratory study

Abstract It is a widely discussed topic in restoration ecology to use organic carbon (OC) management to increase nutrient uptake in chronically loaded agricultural streams. However, although nitrate uptake has been shown to correlated closely with the availability of dissolved OC, this relationship is less clear for phosphate. Likewise, the role of particulate OC (POC) on stimulating nutrient uptake has to be clarified. We aimed at investigating the effects of leaf additions on the net uptake of soluble reactive phosphorus and nitrate‐nitrogen from the water column by benthic biofilms in combined laboratory flume and batch experiments. Fine sediments were colonised under nutrient‐enriched conditions in the dark (dark‐grown heterotrophic biofilms) and under a 12/12‐hr dark/light cycle (light‐grown photoautotrophic biofilms) in flumes. In each light treatment, half of the biofilms were grown under strong OC‐limitation, the other half under near‐optimal C:N:P ratios. For the uptake experiments, the colonised sediments were incubated in nutrient‐enriched water to which (1) fresh alder leaves, (2) pre‐leached leaves, or (3) no leaves were added. Net nutrient uptake (or release) rates were determined via the change in nutrient concentrations in the water column over time. Net phosphorus uptake by dark‐grown biofilms was significantly increased by the addition of leaves. Despite their high initial nutrient leaching, fresh leaves showed stronger stimulating effects on the net P uptake than leached leaves over the entire experiment. Furthermore, biofilms grown under near‐optimum C:N:P ratios responded stronger to the POC supply than biofilms grown under C‐limited conditions. In contrast to dark‐grown biofilms, leaf additions had no significant effects on the net P uptake by light‐grown biofilms. We also found no effects of leaf additions on net nitrate uptake. Our study shows that an increased POC supply in nutrient‐impacted streams may boost heterotrophic phosphate uptake. However, the stimulating effect of the POC addition depends on a variety of POC‐dependent (e.g. respiration, heterotrophic assimilation, denitrification) and independent (e.g. adsorption, photoautotrophic assimilation) processes, making nutrient control via POC management challenging. We suggest application of management approaches that focus on restoration of riparian areas and wetlands to increase the amount of natural, complex POC with a moderate degradability, thus keeping the heterotrophic metabolism low but potentially stimulating in‐stream N and P retention.

Nanoplanktonic diatom rapidly alters sinking velocity via regulating lipid content and composition in response to changing nutrient concentrations

Diatom sinking plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, accounting for approximately 40% of marine particulate organic carbon export. While oceanic models typically represent diatoms as microphytoplankton (> 20 μm), it is important to recognize that many diatoms fall into the categories of nanophytoplankton (2-20 μm) and picophytoplankton (< 2 μm). These smaller diatoms have also been found to significantly contribute to carbon export. However, our understanding of their sinking behavior and buoyancy regulation mechanisms remains limited. In this study, we investigate the sinking behavior of a nanoplanktonic diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum), which exhibits rapid changes in sinking behavior in response to varying nutrient concentrations. Our results demonstrate that a higher sinking rate is observed under phosphate limitation and depletion. Notably, in phosphate depletion, the sinking rate of P. tricornutum was 0.79 ± 0.03 m d-1, nearly three times that of the previously reported sinking rates for Skeletonema costatum, Ditylum brightwellii, and Chaetoceros gracile. Furthermore, during the first 6 h of phosphate spike, the sinking rate of P. tricornutum remained consistently high. After 12 h of phosphate spike, the sinking rate decreased to match that of the phosphate repletion phase, only to increase again over the next 12 hours due to phosphate depletion. This rapid sinking behavior contributes to carbon export and potentially allows diatoms to exploit nutrient-rich patches when encountering increased nutrient concentrations. We also observed a significant positive correlation (P< 0.001) between sinking rate and lipid content (R = 0.91) during the phosphate depletion and spike experiment. It appears that P. tricornutum regulates its sinking rate by increasing intracellular lipid content, particularly digalactosyldiacylglycerol, hexosyl ceramide, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, and triglycerides. Additionally, P. tricornutum replaces phospholipids with more dense membrane sulfolipids, such as sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol under phosphate shortage. These findings shed light on the intricate relationship between nutrient availability, sinking behavior, and lipid composition in diatoms, providing insights into their adaptive strategies for carbon export and nutrient utilization.

Dynamic evolution of antibiotic resistance genes in plastisphere in the vertical profile of urban rivers

Microplastics (MPs) can vertically transport in the aquatic environment due to their aging and biofouling, forming distinct plastisphere in different water layers. However, even though MPs have been regarded as hotspots for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), little is known about the propagation and transfer of ARGs in plastisphere in waters, especially in the vertical profile. Therefore, this study investigated the dynamic responses and evolution of ARGs in different plastisphere distributed vertically in an urbanized river. The biofilm biomass in the polylactic acid (PLA) plastisphere was relatively higher than that in the polyethylene terephthalate (PET), showing depth-decay variations. The ARGs abundance in plastisphere were much higher than that in the surrounding waters, especially for the PLA. In the vertical profiles, the ARGs abundance in the PET plastisphere increased with water depths, while the highest abundance of ARGs in the PLA mostly appeared at intermediate waters. In the temporal dynamic, the ARGs abundance in plastisphere increased and then decreased, which may be dominated by the MP types at the initial periods. After long-term exposure, the influences of water depths seemed to be strengthened, especially in the PET plastisphere. Compared with surface waters, the microbiota attached in plastisphere in deep waters showed high species richness, strong diversity, and complex interactions, which was basically consistent with the changes of nutrient contents in different water layers. These vertical variations in microbiota and nutrients (e.g., nitrogen) may be responsible for the propagation of ARGs in plastisphere in deep waters. The host bacteria for ARGs in plastisphere was also developed as water depth increased, leading to an enrichment of ARGs in deep waters. In addition, the abundance of ARGs in plastisphere in bottom waters was positively correlated with the mobile genetic elements (MGEs) of intI1 and tnpA05, indicative of a frequent horizontal gene transfer of ARGs. Overall, water depth played a critical role in the propagation of ARGs in plastisphere, which should not be ignored in a long time series. This study provides new insights into the dynamic evolution of ARGs propagation in plastisphere under increasing global MPs pollution, especially in the vertical profile.
