Changes in the fatty acid profiles and health indexes of bovine colostrum during the first days of lactation and their impact on human health

Our objective was to analyze the changes in fatty acid (FA) profiles of bovine colostrum and immature milk during the first four days of lactation and assess their potential impact on human health. Colostrum and immature milk samples were collected from Czech Fleckvieh cows during their first to third lactation and the FA profiles were analyzed using multidimensional gas chromatography with a vacuum ultraviolet detector (GC×GC-VUV). The colostrum of primiparous cows contained lower levels of medium-chain and saturated fatty acids, and higher levels of mono- and unsaturated fatty acids compared to that of multiparous cows. The atherogenic and thrombogenicity indexes, as well as the hypocholesterolemic-to-hypercholesterolemic fatty acid ratio, were more favourable in primiparous cows. This makes colostrum fat an attractive product for human nutrition. To obtain the maximum health benefits, we recommend collecting and processing the colostrum of primiparous cows and immature milk at the end of the milk transition separately.

Plasma free fatty acid levels in cervical cancer: concurrent chemoradiotherapy improves abnormal profile.

Background: Epidemiology has demonstrated that plasma free fatty acids (FFAs) can prevent the development of cancer. Our study sought to evaluate the relationship between plasma (FFA) levels and cervical cancer. Methods: In recent years, metabolomics-based approaches have been recognized as an emerging tool, so we examined the plasma FFA profiles of 114 patients with cervical cancer and 151 healthy people using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods. Results: The data results were analyzed by multifactorial binary logistic regression analysis, and it was found that palmitic acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and total ω-3 fatty acids were negatively correlated with the risk of cervical cancer; whereas tetracosanoic acid was positively correlated with the risk of cervical cancer (OR, 1.026; 95% CI, 1.013-1.040; p < 0.001). Dynamic follow-up of 40 cervical cancer patients who successfully completed CCRT revealed that most fatty acid levels tended to increase after the end of treatment, except for palmitic and stearic acid levels, which were lower than before treatment. Conclusion: Plasma FFA profiles were altered in cervical cancer patients, which may be related to abnormal fatty acid metabolism in cervical cancer. The described changes in fatty acid profiles during CCRT may be related to the good functioning of CCRT. Further studies on plasma FFA composition and its changes due to CCRT in patients with cervical cancer are warranted.

Advances in free fatty acid profiles in gestational diabetes mellitus.

The morbidity of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing and is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes and long-term maternal and infant health. The exact mechanism underlying changes in plasma free fatty acid (FFA) profiles in patients with GDM is unknown. However, it is believed that changes in diet and lipid metabolism may play a role. Fatty acids contain many specific FFAs, and the type of FFA has different impacts on physiological processes; hence, determining changes in FFAs in individual plasma is essential. Alterations in FFA concentration or profile may facilitate insulin resistance. Additionally, some FFAs show potential to predict GDM in early pregnancy and are strongly associated with the growth and development of the fetus and occurrence of macrosomia. Here, we aimed to review changes in FFAs in women with GDM and discuss the relationship of FFAs with GDM incidence and adverse outcomes.

Silicon and titanium nanoparticles modulated drought and chromium toxicity by adjusting physio-biochemical attributes and fatty acid profiles of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.).

Drought and chromium (Cr) stress are the main environmental issues affecting plant performance. Although the positive effects of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) are used as a promising strategy to control abiotic stresses; their synergic effects on controlling drought and Cr toxicity are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of foliar applications of SiO2 (200 mg L-1) and TiO2 (60 mg L-1) NPs on growth, chlorophyll (Chl) content, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme, and fatty acid profile of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) under drought (soil moisture at 50% field capacity (FC) and Cr toxicity as K2Cr2O7 at 10 mg L-1. The results showed that drought and Cr stress significantly reduced growth and Chl a + b, but increased malondialdehyde (MDA), electrolyte leakage (EL), and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The use of NPs particularly SiO2 NPs modulated drought and Cr stress through enhancing Chl content and alleviating MDA, EL, and antioxidant activities. Under drought stress, SiO2 NPs enhanced shoot weight (26%), root weight (25%), seed yield (36%), Chl content (26%), but lowered MDA (22%), EL (14%), catalase (CAT, 32%), and superoxide dismutase (SOD, 33%) activity relative to non-NP application. The main changes in fatty acid profile corresponded to abiotic stresses, where they increased polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) but decreased monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). Multivariate analysis showed that plant weight, seed yield, Cl content, and oleic acid negatively correlated with MDA, EL, antioxidant enzymes, and linoleic acid. In total, the use of SiO2 is recommended for modulating drought and Cr stress to reach the maximum seed yield of black cumin and a healthy fatty acid profile.

Comprehensive lipid hydrolysis observation in anaerobic digestion

Lipid hydrolysis monitoring, including especially glycerides, is necessary for comprehending the anaerobic digestion process in lipid-rich substrates processing. This reaction has not been investigated in such detail so far, despite its potential to be crucial in assuring a stable process. This study suggested and thoroughly validated an uncomplicated method of monitoring lipid hydrolysis during anaerobic digestion, achieving recovery values >95 % with an average relative standard deviation <5 %. Subsequently, the method was applied on the very first detailed observation of glyceride hydrolysis in the anaerobic sludge, tracking even changes in fatty acid profiles during anaerobic digestion. Results showed that lipid hydrolysis can take several days, thus likely affecting the whole anaerobic digestion of lipids. The method aims to provide answers to improve understanding of lipids' fate and their inhibition phenomena in anaerobic digestion.

The role of roasting on changes in bioactive properties, fatty acid and phenolic compound profiles in the free and bound fraction of black quinoa seeds

SummaryIn present investigation, the effect of roasting in microwave and oven on bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, fatty acid profiles and phenolic constituents of quinoa seeds for free and conjugated phenolic profile fractions are studied. The oil contents of seeds roasted in both roasting systems were recorded between 4.25% (microwave) and 4.80% (oven).Total phenolic amounts of free and bound fractions of quinoa seeds were measured to be between 1668.1 (control) and 2037.5 mg/100 g (microwave) to 638.9 (microwave) to 1615.3 mg/100 g (oven), respectively. Antioxidant activities of free and bound fractions of quinoa seeds were recorded to be between 36.86% (microwave) and 39.28% (oven) to 74.83% (control) and 77.18% (microwave), respectively. Oleic and linoleic acid results of quinoa seed oils roasted in microwave and oven were identified between 17.26% (oven) and 22.41% (control) to 48.39% (oven) and 59.92% (microwave), respectively. 3,4‐Dihydroxybenzoic acid results of raw and roasted quinoa seeds for free and bound fractions were identified to be between 2.84 (microwave) and 4.01 mg/100 g (oven) to 7.43 (oven) and 12.60 mg/100 g (control), respectively. K results of roasted quinoa seeds were recorded between 8701.17 (oven) and 9638.45 (microwave). Results showed some changes depending on roasting systems and fraction types.

Influence of Nigella sativa L. Oil Addition on Physicochemical and Sensory Properties of Freezer-Stored Ground Pork for Pâté

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Nigella sativa L. (NS) oil addition on the quality of ground pork for pâté stored for one month and two months (−20 ± 1 °C). The study was conducted on a negative control (C), a positive control with the addition of antioxidant (CB) butylated hydroxyanisole (E320), and two groups with the addition of NS oil at the level of 1.9% (O1) and 3.8% (O2). The quality parameters tested in the meat were colour (measured in the CIELab system), lipid oxidation products, the fatty acid profile, thrombogenicity (T1), atherogenicity (A1), and the ratio of hypocholesterolemia to hypercholesterolemia (h/H). After roasting the pâtés, their volatile compound profiles were studied and sensory tests were conducted. A significant effect of NS oil additive on meat colour was found and ΔE for C-O2 increased faster during storage than for C-O1 and C-CB. NS oil additive in pork pâté improved the fatty acid profile. Significant differences in the rate of the fatty acid profile change during storage were observed with the addition of 3.8% NS oil compared to the other groups. Only the O2 group showed no change in PUFA content, while the h/H ratio was approximately 20% higher in the groups with added oil. The addition of NS oil also slowed the growth of TBARSs compared to the C and CB groups. The volatile compound profile of the raw pâté was most influenced by the proportion of terpenes in the NS oil. After two months of meat storage, the O1 pâté received the highest sensory ratings.

The Entomopathogenic Fungus Conidiobolus coronatus Has Similar Effects on the Cuticular Free Fatty Acid Profile of Sensitive and Resistant Insects.

The mechanisms underlying the recognition of a susceptible host by a fungus and the role of cuticular compounds (CCs) in this process remain unclear; however, accumulated data suggest that this is influenced to a great degree by cuticular lipids. Two insect species differing in their sensitivity to fungal infection, viz. the highly sensitive Galleria mellonella Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and the resistant Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae), exhibited significant qualitative and quantitative changes in cuticular free fatty acid (FFA) profiles after exposure to Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) Batko (Entomopthorales). Despite being systematically distant, leading different lifestyles in different habitats, both insect species demonstrated similar changes in the same FFAs following exposure to the fungus (C12:0, C13:0, C14:0, C15:0, C16:1, C16:0, C18:1, C18:0), suggesting that these are involved in a contact-induced defense response. As it was not possible to distinguish the share of FFAs present in the conidia that were attached to the cuticle from the FFAs of the cuticle itself in the total number of extracted FFAs, further research is necessary.

Rate of change in the fillet fatty acid profile of Nile tilapia to attain a nutraceutical level of DHA + EPA for human consumption

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, grows adequately in the absence of dietary omega-3 long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid. However, its fatty acid profile can be enriched by feeding finishing diets for some time before harvesting, to reach a desirable content of 250 mg of DHA + EPA in a 100 g fillet, recommended as the daily intake of these essential fatty acids for human consumption by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, thus improving its economic and nutritional value as a nutraceutical. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of change in the fatty acid profile of tilapia's fillet by feeding diets formulated with soy (SO) or fish oil (FO) in an 8-week bioassay, with two additional treatments, feeding FO for four weeks followed by SO for four additional weeks (FO/SO), or the opposite treatment (SO/FO). No significant differences among treatments were observed at the end of the study for growth performance (weight gain: 103.28–115.83 g; specific growth rate: 6.60–6.83% day−1; daily weight gain: 1.95–2.19 g day−1; survival: 96.67–100%), feed efficiency (1.16–1.31), body indices (hepatosomatic index: 1.48–1.89%; condition factor, K: 2.25–2.43), or proximate composition of the fillet, confirming the versatility of tilapia to efficiently use lipid sources of different nature. However, the fatty acid profile of the dietary lipid source directly influenced the fatty acid profile of the fillet; it was confirmed that, under these experimental conditions, it is possible to enrich the fillet of O. niloticus and reach the concentration of 250 mg of DHA + EPA in a 100 g fillet in just 10 days, for fish of the experimental size (3.11 g of individual initial weight) used in this study and under the prevailing experimental conditions.

Yolk Fatty Acid Profile and Amino Acid Composition in Eggs from Hens Supplemented with ß-Hydroxy-ß-Methylbutyrate.

In recent years, a supplementation of livestock animals, including poultry, with β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) has gained attention for its effects on protein and fat metabolism. This study investigates the effects of HMB in the laying hen diet on egg quality, focusing on amino acid and fatty acid composition. Laying hens were supplemented with 0.02% HMB, with performance parameters and egg components analyzed. HMB supplementation led to increased albumen weight, influencing egg weight while also reducing feed intake per egg without affecting laying rate, yolk indices, fat, or cholesterol content. Notably, the study revealed significant changes in egg amino acid and fatty acid profiles due to HMB supplementation. Various amino acids, including glycine, serine, and isoleucine, were altered in the yolk, impacting nutritional value and potential health benefits. Regarding fatty acids, the study observed changes in both saturated as well as n-6 and n-3 fatty acids, affecting the overall lipid profile of egg yolks. However, the shifts in fatty acid composition could have implications for cardiovascular health due to altered ratios of n-6/n-3 fatty acids. Further research is required to comprehensively understand the implications of these findings for consumer-oriented egg quality and health benefits.

Trophodynamics of the Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) in the Antarctic Peninsula: Ontogenetic changes in diet composition and prey fatty acid profiles.

The Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) is the largest notothenioid species in the Southern Ocean, playing a keystone role in the trophic web as a food source for marine mammals and a top predator in deep-sea ecosystems. Most ecological knowledge on this species relies on samples from areas where direct fishing is allowed, whereas in areas closed to fishing, such as the Antarctic Peninsula (AP), there are still key ecological gaps to ensure effective conservation, especially regarding our understanding of its trophic relationships within the ecosystem. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of the feeding behavior of Antarctic toothfish caught in the northern tip of the AP, during two consecutive fishing seasons (2019/20 and 2020/21). Stomach content was analyzed according to size-classes, sex and season. Macroscopic morphological analysis was used to identify prey, whereas DNA analysis was used in highly digested prey items. Fatty acid analysis was conducted to determine the prey's nutritional composition. The diet mainly consisted of Macrouridae, Cephalopoda, Anotopteridae, and Channichthyidae. Other prey items found were crustaceans and penguin remains; however, these were rare in terms of their presence in stomach samples. Sex had no effect on diet, whereas size-class and fishing season influenced prey composition. From 27 fatty acid profiles identified, we observed two different prey groups of fishes (integrated by families Anotopteridae, Macrouridae and Channichthyidae) and cephalopods. Our results revealed a narrow range of prey items typical of a generalist predator, which probably consumes the most abundant prey. Understanding the diet and trophic relationships of Antarctic toothfish is critical for a better comprehension of its role in the benthic-demersal ecosystem of the AP, key for ecosystemic fisheries management, and relevant for understanding and predicting the effect of climate change on this species.

Air pollution exposure and plasma fatty acid profile in pregnant women: a cohort study.

Air pollution exposure was known to result in body impairments by inducing inflammation and oxidation. But little is known about the associations of air pollutants with plasma fatty acid profile which may play important roles in the impairment of air pollutants based on the related mechanism, especially in pregnant women. This study aimed to explore the relationships of air pollution exposure with plasma fatty acid profile and the potential effect modification by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Based on a cohort in Wuhan, China, we measured concentrations of plasma fatty acids of 519 pregnant women enrolled from 2013 to 2016 by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Levels of exposure to air pollutants (fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO)) were estimated by using spatial-temporal land use regression models and calculated in three periods (average concentrations during 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month before the phlebotomizing day in the first trimester). Per interquartile range increment of the levels of air pollution exposure 1 day before phlebotomizing was related to 1.21-2.01% increment of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6PUFA) and 0.63-1.74% decrement of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA). Besides, relationships above were kept robust in the analysis during 1 week and 1 month before phlebotomizing. In women with normal BMI, plasma fatty acid profile was observed to be more sensitive to air pollutants. Our study demonstrated that increment of exposure to air pollutants was associated with higher plasma n-6PUFA known to be pro-inflammatory and lower plasma n-3PUFA known to be anti-inflammatory, which was more sensitive in pregnant women with normal BMI. Our findings suggested that changes in plasma fatty acid profile should cause concerns and may serve as biomarkers in the further studies. Future studies are needed to validate our findings and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated lipoxygenase gene-editing in yellow pea leads to major changes in fatty acid and flavor profiles.

Although pulses are nutritious foods containing high amounts of protein, fiber and phytochemicals, their consumption and use in the food industry have been limited due to the formation of unappealing flavors/aromas described as beany, green, and grassy. Lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes are prevalent among pulse seeds, and their activity can lead to the formation of specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from certain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). As a widespread issue in legumes, including soybean, these VOCs have been linked to certain unappealing taste perception of foods containing processed pulse seeds. To address this problem in pea and as proof of principle to promote the wider use of pulses, a Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) construct was designed to create null alleles (knockouts) of PsLOX2 which had been implicated in the generation of VOCs in peas. Successful CRISPR/Cas9-mediated LOX gene editing of stable transgenic pea lines (TGP) was confirmed by DNA sequencing of the wild type (WT) and TGP pslox2 mutant lines. These lines were also assessed for LOX activity, PUFA levels, and VOCs. Compared to WT peas, the TGP lines showed a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in LOX activity and in the concentration of key VOCs, including hexanal, 2-hexenal, heptanal, (E)-2-heptenal, (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal, 1-octen-3-ol, octanal, (E)-2-octenal (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal and furan-2-pentyl. The content of two essential PUFAs, linoleic and α-linolenic acids, the known substrates of LOX in plants, was higher in TGP flours, indicating the efficacy of the CRISPR-mediated gene editing in minimizing their oxidation and the further modification of PUFAs and their products. The collection of VOCs from the headspace of ground pea seeds, using a portable eNose also distinguished the TGP and WT lines. Multiple regression analysis showed that LOX activity correlated with the two VOCs, heptanal and (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal in pea flours. Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS-R) plot for selected PUFAs, VOCs, and sensor responses in WT and TGP lines showed distinct clusters for WT and TGP lines. Together this data demonstrates the utility of CRISPR mediated mutagenesis of PsLOX2 to quickly improve aroma and fatty acid (FA) profiles of pea seeds of an elite Canadian variety.

Impaired Reverse Cholesterol Transport is Associated with Changes in Fatty Acid Profile in Children and Adolescents with Abdominal Obesity

BackgroundAbdominal obesity is an important cardiovascular disease risk factor. Plasma fatty acids display a complex network of both pro and antiatherogenic effects. High density lipoproteins (HDL) carry out the antiatherogenic pathway called reverse cholesterol transport (RCT), which involves cellular cholesterol efflux (CCE), and lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) activities. ObjectivesOur aim was to characterize RCT and its relation to fatty acids present in plasma in pediatric abdominal obesity. MethodsSeventeen children and adolescents with abdominal obesity and 17 healthy controls were studied. Anthropometric parameters were registered. Glucose, insulin, lipid levels, CCE employing THP-1 cells, LCAT and CETP activities, plus fatty acids in apo B-depleted plasma were measured. ResultsThe obese group showed a more atherogenic lipid profile, plus lower CCE (Mean±Standard Deviation) (6 ± 2 vs. 7 ± 2%; P < 0.05) and LCAT activity (11 ± 3 vs. 15 ±5 umol/dL.h; P < 0.05). With respect to fatty acids, the obese group showed higher myristic (1.1 ± 0.3 vs. 0.7 ± 0.3; P < 0.01) and palmitic acids (21.5 ± 2.8 vs. 19.6 ± 1.9; P < 0.05) in addition to lower linoleic acid (26.4 ± 3.3 vs. 29.9 ± 2.6; P < 0.01). Arachidonic acid correlated with CCE (r = 0.37; P < 0.05), myristic acid with LCAT (r = -0.37; P < 0.05), palmitioleic acid with CCE (r = -0.35; P < 0.05), linoleic acid with CCE (r = 0.37; P < 0.05), lauric acid with LCAT (r = 0.49; P < 0.05), myristic acid with LCAT (r = -0.37; P < 0.05) ecoisatrienoic acid with CCE (r = 0.40; P < 0.05) and lignoseric acid with LCAT (r = -0.5; P < 0.01). ConclusionsChildren and adolescents with abdominal obesity presented impaired RCT, which was associated with modifications in proinflammatory fatty acids, such as palmitoleic and myristic, thus contributing to increased cardiovascular disease risk.

Comparative assessment of the frying performance of palm olein and sunflower oil during deep-fat frying of Indian battered food products

The present study evaluates the frying performance of palm olein and sunflower oil during deep-fat frying of Indian snacks. Changes in parameters such as free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (AV), total oxidation as TOTOX value (TV), dienes, and trienes value together with colour, were evaluated after deep frying of fried products, namely aloo pakora, onion pakora, bread pakora, boondi, and meduvada. The FFA and PV after frying were 0.12 ± 0.01 and 1.16 ± 0.07, 0.13 ± 0.02 and 1.3 ± 0.01, 0.66 ± 0.01 and 2.63 ± 0.00, 0.13 ± 0.01 and 1.65 ± 0.05, 0.22 ± 0.01% and 0.92 ± 0.00 meq/kg for fried medium after frying of aloo pakora, onion pakora, bread pakora, boondi, and meduvada fried in palm olein respectively. A similar trend was also observed for AV, TV, CD, and CT, where sunflower oil showed higher deterioration upon frying than palm olein. The changes in fatty acids profile showed significant change in sunflower oil, evidenced by increased saturated fatty acids and decreased unsaturated fatty acids. The colour also increased significantly for both oil after frying, depicting the buildup of oxidative by-products in the frying medium. The prospect of palm olein for frying various Indian snacks is prominent owing to its thermal resistance and techno-economic benefits over sunflower oil.

Transcriptome profiling brings new insights into the ethanol stress responses of Spathaspora passalidarum.

Spathaspora passalidarum is a xylose-fermenting microorganism promising for the fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates. This yeast is more sensitive to ethanol than Saccharomyces cerevisiae for unclear reasons. An RNA-seq experiment was performed to identify transcriptional changes in S. passalidarum in response to ethanol and gain insights into this phenotype. The results showed the upregulation of genes associated with translation and the downregulation of genes encoding proteins involved in lipid metabolism, transporters, and enzymes from glycolysis and fermentation pathways. Our results also revealed that genes encoding heat-shock proteins and involved in antioxidant response were upregulated, whereas the osmotic stress response of S. passalidarum appears impaired under ethanol stress. A pseudohyphal morphology of S. passalidarum colonies was observed in response to ethanol stress, which suggests that ethanol induces a misperception of nitrogen availability in the environment. Changes in the yeast fatty acid profile were observed only after 12 h of ethanol exposure, coinciding with the recovery of the yeast xylose consumption ability. These findings suggest that the lack of fast membrane lipid adjustments, the halt in nutrient absorption and cellular metabolism, and the failure to induce the expression of osmotic stress-responsive genes are the main aspects underlying the low ethanol tolerance of S. passalidarum. ABSTRACT The freshwater snail, Viviparus contectus, is an important shellfish owing to its nutritional composition (i.e., high amounts of protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals) and its promise as a candidate for the treatment of some diseases in traditional medicine. Hence, the seasonal changes in the fatty acid (FA) profile of Viviparus contectus caught from Demirköprü Dam Lake were determined in this study. Saturated fatty acid (SFAs) (64.54–80.39% of total fatty acids) had the highest concentration followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (10.63–21.83%) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) (6.57–10.13%). Stearic acid (C18:0) was the major SFA while arachidonic acid (C20:4 n−6) was the major PUFA. The season significantly affected the FA profile of V. contectus while no significant difference was determined between seasons with respect to tissue MUFAs levels. A higher level of total SFAs was detected during spring (80.39%) while a higher proportion of MUFAs was detected during the winter (10.13%). The total amounts of PUFAs were highest in winter (21.83%). Overall, V. contectus has nutritional value. However, V. contectus caught in autumn may be nutritionally the most valuable for human consumption due to higher eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5 n−3 and docosahexaenoic acid contents.

Partial and full replacement of dietary fish oil by poultry fat feeds in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

ABSTRACT The study investigated the effects of dietary fish oil replacement by poultry fat on growth performance, fillet quality, and serum enzymatic activities in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The fish were fed three diets (0%, 50%, and 100% replacement) for 2 months with or without a washout period. No significant effects were observed among treatments on growth performance and viscerosomatic index or on fillet moisture, fat, protein, and ash contents (p > .05). Increased poultry fat led to decrease in ω-3 fatty acids and increase in ω-6 fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids. The washout period restored most of the changes in fillet fatty acid profiles and serum enzymatic activity in the fish feed containing poultry fat. In conclusion, replacement of dietary fish oil by poultry fat had no detrimental effects on fish growth performance, but reduced fish fillet ω-3 fatty acids, which can be restored via a washout period.
