Differential ecological filtering across life cycle stages drive old-field succession in a neotropical dry forest

Abiotic and biotic filters may play differential roles in the plant community organization along forest succession in abandoned fields. However, little is known about how life stage-specific filters influence species replacement during succession. We approach this issue by analyzing changes in community attributes (abundance, species density, species diversity, species composition) and the phylogenetic structure of shrubs and trees at different life stages during the old-field succession of a seasonally tropical dry forest (TDF) in Western Mexico. We raised two main questions: (1) How different are the trajectories of change in community attributes and phylogenetic structure along succession for shrub and tree species at different life-stages? (2) Do different stage-specific trajectories result from differential filtering mechanisms? We used a chronosequence of abandoned pastures and forest sites, classified in five successional categories (with three sites each): Pasture (< 1.5 years fallow age), Early (3.5–5.5 y), Mid (6–8 y), Advanced (13–15 y), and Old-Growth Forest. Identity and abundance of species were recorded at five life stages: seeds in the top soil layer, seedlings (plants emerged from seeds, 10–100 cm height), resprouts (plants emerging from buds in roots or stumps, 10–100 cm height), juvenile [shrubs and trees > 100 cm height and < 2.5 cm diameter at breast height (DBH)], adults (shrubs and trees with DBH ≥ 2.5 cm). Additionally, we quantified the phylogenetic mean parwise distance (MPD) among species, and analyzed the phylogenetic community structure, for each successional category and life stage. We found that early in succession the resprout stage was more abundant and diverse than the seedling stage, while the inverse occurred late in succession. Along the first 15 years of succession, the seedling stage showed a clumped phylogenetic structure (with a strong dominance of legume species), while the resprout stage tended to have an overdispersed one (with species from a wide range of clades). Also, community attributes of the juvenile and adult stages approached those of the old-growth forest, and in both stages the phylogenetic structure changed from clustered to random. Overall, our results suggest that the assembly of shrub and trees communities along succession resulted from a combination of abiotic filtering processes, operating mostly on seedlings (selecting primarily legume drought-tolerant species), and biotic filtering processes, operating mostly in resprouts (generating a taxonomic and phylogenetically diverse regenerative pool). The implications of these results for the management of secondary TDF in human modified landscapes are discussed.

Positive effect of shredders on microbial biomass and decomposition in stream microcosms

Summary1. Animals play a major role in nutrient cycling via excretory processes. Although the positive indirect effects of grazers on periphytic algae are well understood, little is known about top‐down effects on decomposers of shredders living on leaf litter.2. Nutrient cycling by shredders in oligotrophic forest streams may be important for the microbial‐detritus compartment at very small spatial scales (i.e. within the leaf packs in which shredders feed). We hypothesised that insect excretion may cause local nutrient enrichment, so that microorganism growth on leaves is stimulated.3. We first tested the effect of increasing concentration of ammonium (+10, +20 and +40 μg NH4+ L−1) on fungal and bacterial biomass on leaf litter in a laboratory experiment. Then we performed two experiments to test the effect of the presence and feeding activity of shredder larvae. We used two species belonging to the trichopteran family Sericostomatidae: the Palaearctic Sericostoma vittatum and the Neotropical Myothrichia murina, to test the effect of these shredders on fungal and bacterial biomass and decomposition on leaves of Quercus robur and Nothofagus pumilio, respectively. All experiments were run in water with low ammonium concentrations (2.4 ± 0.34 to 14.47 ± 0.95 μg NH4+ L−1).4. After 5 days of incubation, NH4 concentrations were reduced to near‐ambient streamwater concentrations in all treatments with leaves. Fungal biomass was positively affected by increased ammonium concentration. On the other hand, bacteria abundance was similar in all treatments, both in terms of abundance (bacteria cells mg−1 leaf DW) and biomass. However, there was a tendency towards larger mean cell size in treatments with 20 μg NH4 L−1.5. In the experiment with S. vittatum, fungal biomass in the treatment with insects was more than twice that in the control after 15 days. Bacteria were not detected in treatments with insects, where hyphae were abundant, but they were abundant in treatments without larvae. In the decomposition experiment run with M. murina, leaf‐mass loss was significantly higher in treatments with larvae than in controls.6. Our hypothesis of a positive effect of shredders on fungal biomass and decomposition was demonstrated. Insect excretion caused ammonium concentration to increase in the microcosms, contributing to microbial N uptake in leaf substrata, which resulted in structural and functional changes in community attributes. The positive effect of detritivores on microbes has been mostly neglected in stream nutrient‐cycling models; our findings suggest that this phenomenon may be of greater importance than expected in stream nutrient budgets.

The effects of land use on environmental features and functional organization of macroinvertebrate communities in Patagonian low order streams

Benthic invertebrates, water quality variables, chlorophyll a and particulate organic matter (POM) were studied in 18 sites of mountain streams in Patagonia (Argentina) subjected to six different land uses: native forest, pine plantation, pasture, harvest forest, urban and reference urban. Three streams of each land use were studied in March 2006. Macroinvertebrates were sampled in three riffles and three pools ( n = 108) and biomass of detrital fractions of POM were quantified. Overall benthic POM biomass was higher at native and harvest forest than pastures, whereas fine fraction (FPOM) was higher in harvest forest than in pastures. Regarding to autotrophic subsidies bryophytes were the only that changed consistently among uses. These differences in energy resources were correlated with changes in community attributes. Shredder richness was clearly higher at native and harvest forest than exotic pine plantations, collector gatherers density was consistently high at harvest sites, and total density was significantly higher at urban and harvest forest. Multidimensional scaling ordination based on macroinvertebrate density data showed a clear separation of forested (either native or exotic species) from riparian modified areas (pasture, urban and harvest sites). Environmental variables having explanation power on macroinvertebrate assemblages were mostly related with: detritus availability (wood and leaves biomass) and impairment (total phosphorous and % sand). These results confirm that macroinvertebrate assemblage structure in Patagonian low order streams can be altered by land use practices. Among guild structure measures, those indicators based on benthic community functional attributes, shredders richness and collectors density, resulted good candidates to assess land use impacts. On account of riparian corridor management may be critical to the distribution of benthic taxa, the maintenance of good conditions of vegetation adjacent to rivers will enhance water quality and the environment for highly endemic headwater communities of Patagonian streams.

Impacts of ecosystem engineers on community attributes: effects of cushion plants at different elevations of the Chilean Andes

ABSTRACTEcosystem engineers are organisms able to modulate environmental forces and, hence, may change the habitat conditions for other species. In so doing, ecosystem engineers may affect both species richness and evenness of communities and, in consequence, change species diversity. If these changes in community attributes are related to the magnitude of the habitat changes induced by the engineers, it seems likely that engineer species will have greater effects on diversity in sites where they cause larger habitat changes. We addressed this issue by evaluating the effects of three alpine cushion plants on species richness, evenness, and diversity of high‐Andean plant communities. Given that the difference in microclimatic conditions between cushions and the external environment increases with elevation, we proposed that these organisms should have greater effects on community attributes at higher than at lower elevation sites. Results showed that the three cushion species had positive effects on species richness, diversity, and evenness of plant communities. It was also observed that the magnitude of these effects changed with elevation: positive effects on species richness and diversity increased towards upper sites for the three cushions species, whereas positive effects on evenness increased with elevation for one cushion species but decreased with elevation for other two cushion species. These results suggest that the presence of cushions is important to maintain plant diversity in high‐Andean communities, but this positive effect on diversity seems to increase as the difference in environmental conditions between cushions and the external environment increases with elevation.

Changes in Vegetation Characteristics Downwind of an Aluminium Factory in India

Vegetation characteristics were assessed at different distances downwind of an aluminium factory to elucidate changes in community attributes. The importance value index (IVI) of sensitive species decreased and those of tolerant species increased with the increasing pollution load around the factory. Plant community composition changed with distance from this source. Species richness and the Shannon-Weiner index increased with the increasing distance from the source, while concentration of dominance declined from 1 to 11 km. The similarity coefficient indicated that the third and fifth sites are closer to each other, and first and fourth sites are farthest. The shape of the species sequence vs. the IVI distribution curve slipped from the shape of log normal distribution at sites receiving higher pollution load. The woody layer is found to be more affected compared to the herbaceous layer. The aluminium factory impact was most pronounced up to 4 km downwind of the source. Data on ambient air quality were found to be directly related to the unfavourable changes in community attributes.
