Anesthesia depth monitoring with the most popular modern technique in practice is the Bixpectral Index Score (BIS) monitor. Anesthesia depth monitoring using BIS is more accurate than traditional anesthesia depth monitoring. Objective assessment of the depth of sedation can use the BIS tool that provides the best prediction of the patient's degree of consciousness to] prevent the patient from waking up and remember actions, drug additions, and wake predictions more accurately by looking at changes in brain electrical activity depicted through EEG

Alpha-Band Lateralization and Microsaccades Elicited by Exogenous Cues Do Not Track Attentional Orienting.

We explore the world by constantly shifting our focus of attention toward salient stimuli and then disengaging from them in search of new ones. The alpha rhythm (8-13 Hz) has been suggested as a pivotal neural substrate of these attentional shifts, due to its local synchronization and desynchronization that suppress irrelevant cortical areas and facilitate relevant areas, a phenomenon called alpha lateralization. Whether alpha lateralization tracks the focus of attention from orienting toward a salient stimulus to disengaging from it is still an open question. We addressed it by leveraging the phenomenon of inhibition of return (IOR), consisting of an initial facilitation in response times (RTs) for stimuli appearing at an exogenously cued location, followed by a suppression of that location. Our behavioral data from human participants showed a typical IOR effect with both early facilitation and subsequent inhibition. In contrast, alpha lateralized in the cued direction after the behavioral facilitation effect and never re-lateralized compatibly with the behavioral inhibition. Furthermore, we analyzed the interaction between alpha lateralization and microsaccades: while alpha was lateralized toward the cued location, microsaccades were mostly oriented away from it. Crucially, the two phenomena showed a significant positive correlation. These results indicate that alpha lateralization reflects primarily the processing of salient stimuli, challenging the view that alpha lateralization is directly involved in exogenous attentional orienting per se. We discuss the relevance of the present findings for an oculomotor account of alpha lateralization as a modulator of cortical excitability in preparation of a saccade.

Impact of tramadol and heroin abuse on electroencephalography structure and cognitive functions

BackgroundOpioids, defined as medicines that stimulate opioid receptors, are primarily used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain. They induce central nervous system (CNS) adverse effects. This study aimed to assess the effect of opioids on brain electrical activity, the effect of opioids on cognitive functions, and corroborate whether there was any correlation between changes in brain electrical activity and cognitive functions that may do in opioid addicts.MethodsThis cross-sectional case–control study was performed on 80 cases (divided into two groups 40 cases with tramadol use disorders and 40 cases with heroin use disorders) and 40 age-/sex-matched healthy control. All subjects were subordinated to neuropsychiatric evaluation, assessment of opioid use complaint through history from the case and his relatives, substance monitoring in urine, medicine abuse screening test (DAST), electroencephalography (EEG), and cognitive assessment by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA).ResultsOpioid dependence convinced global cognitive function impairment, specific cognitive disciplines impairment that included visual-conceptual, visual-motor tracking, visual-constructional skills, language function, attention, memory, and orientation. Additionally, affection of the brain’s electrical activities with significant changes compared with control. Comparison of cognitive impairment substantiated by lower cognitive scores in relation to abnormal EEG changes among studied case groups revealed significant differences.ConclusionsOpioid abusers had a significant impairment of cognitive functions and EEG changes with a significant correlation between changes in brain electrical activity and impairment of cognitive functions.

Improving Behavior Monitoring of Free-Moving Dairy Cows Using Noninvasive Wireless EEG Approach and Digital Signal Processing Techniques

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the most common method to access brain information. Techniques to monitor and extract brain signal characteristics in farm animals are not as developed as those for humans and laboratory animals. The objective of this study was to develop a noninvasive method for monitoring brain signals in cattle, allowing the animals to move freely, and to characterize these signals. Brain signals from six Holstein heifers that could move freely in a paddock compartment were acquired. The control group consisted of the same number of bovines, contained in a climatic chamber (restrained group). In the second step, the signals were characterized by Power Spectral Density, Short-Time Fourier Transform, and Lempel–Ziv complexity. The preliminary results revealed an optimal electrode position, referred to as POS2, which is located at the center of the frontal region of the animal’s head. This positioning allowed for attaching the electrodes to the front of the bovine’s head, resulting in the acquisition of longer artifact-free signal sections. The signals showed typical EEG frequency bands, like the bands found in humans. The Lempel–Ziv complexity values indicated that the bovine brain signals contained random and chaotic components. As expected, the signals acquired from the retained bovine group displayed sections with a larger number of artifacts due to the hot 32 degree C temperature in the climatic chamber. We present a method that helps to monitor and extract brain signal features in unrestrained bovines. The method could be applied to investigate changes in brain electrical activity during animal farming, to monitor brain pathologies, and to other situations related to animal behavior.

Changes in local and network brain activity after stereotactic thermocoagulation in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Stereoelectroencephalography-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (SEEG-guided RF-TC) aims to reduce seizure frequency by modifying epileptogenic networks through local thermocoagulative lesions. Although RF-TC is hypothesized to functionally modify brain networks, reports of changes in functional connectivity (FC) following the procedure are missing. We evaluated, by means of SEEG recordings, whether variation in brain activity after RF-TC is related to clinical outcome. Interictal SEEG recordings from 33 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) were analyzed. Therapeutic response was defined as a >50% reduction in seizure frequency for at least 1 month following RF-TC. Local (power spectral density [PSD]) and FC changes were evaluated in 3-min segments recorded shortly before (baseline), shortly after, and 15 min after RF-TC. The PSD and FC strength values after thermocoagulation were compared with baseline as well as between the responder and nonresponder groups. In responders, we found a significant reduction in PSD after RF-TC in channels that were thermocoagulated for all frequency bands (p = .007 for broad, delta and theta, p <.001 for alpha and beta bands). However, we did not observe such PSD decrease in nonresponders. At the network level, nonresponders displayed a significant FC increase in all frequency bands except theta (broad, delta, beta band: p <.001; alpha band: p <.01), although responders showed a significant FC decrease in delta (p <.001) and alpha bands (p <.05). Nonresponders showed stronger FC changes with respect to responders exclusively in TC channels (broad, alpha, theta, beta: p >.05; delta: p = .001). Thermocoagulation induces both local and network-related (FC) changes in electrical brain activity of patients with DRE lasting for at least 15 min. This study demonstrates that the observed short-term modifications in brain network and local activity significantly differ between responders and nonresponders and opens new perspectives for studying the longer-lasting FC changes after RF-TC.

FMRI spectral signatures of sleep

Sleep can be distinguished from wake by changes in brain electrical activity, typically assessed using electroencephalography (EEG). The hallmark of nonrapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep is the shift from high-frequency, low-amplitude wake EEG to low-frequency, high-amplitude sleep EEG dominated by spindles and slow waves. Here we identified signatures of sleep in brain hemodynamic activity, using simultaneous functional MRI (fMRI) and EEG. We found that, at the transition from wake to sleep, fMRI blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity evolved from a mixed-frequency pattern to one dominated by two distinct oscillations: a low-frequency (<0.1 Hz) oscillation prominent in light sleep and correlated with the occurrence of spindles, and a high-frequency oscillation (>0.1 Hz) prominent in deep sleep and correlated with the occurrence of slow waves. The two oscillations were both detectable across the brain but exhibited distinct spatiotemporal patterns. During the falling-asleep process, the low-frequency oscillation first appeared in the thalamus, then the posterior cortex, and lastly the frontal cortex, while the high-frequency oscillation first appeared in the midbrain, then the frontal cortex, and lastly the posterior cortex. During the waking-up process, both oscillations disappeared first from the thalamus, then the frontal cortex, and lastly the posterior cortex. The BOLD oscillations provide local signatures of spindle and slow wave activity. They may be employed to monitor the regional occurrence of sleep or wakefulness, track which regions are the first to fall asleep or wake up at the wake-sleep transitions, and investigate local homeostatic sleep processes.

Changes in Brain Electrical Activity after Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Rats.

Objectives. Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. To search for new therapeutic and pharmacotherapeutic strategies, numerous models of this disease have been proposed, the most popular being transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. Behavioral and sensorimotor testing, biochemical, and histological methods are traditionally used in conjunction with this model to assess the effectiveness of potential treatment options. Despite its wide overall popularity, electroencephalography/electrocorticography is quite rarely used in such studies. Materials and methods. In the present work, we explored the changes in brain electrical activity at days 3 and 7 after 30- and 45-min of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats. Results. Cerebral ischemia altered the amplitude and spectral electrocorticogram characteristics, and led to a reorganization of inter- and intrahemispheric functional connections. Ischemia duration affected the severity as well as the nature of the observed changes. Conclusions. The dynamics of changes in brain electrical activity may indicate a spontaneous partial recovery of impaired cerebral functions at post-surgery day 7. Our results suggest that electrocorticography can be used successfully to assess the functional status of the brain following ischemic stroke in rats as well as to investigate the dynamics of functional recovery.

Changes in Electrical Brain Activity and Cognitive Functions Following Mild to Moderate COVID-19: A one-Year Prospective Study After Acute Infection.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can disrupt various brain functions. Over a one-year period, we aimed to assess brain activity and cognitive function in 53 COVID-19 patients and 30 individuals without COVID-19 (or asymptomatic). The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Trail Making Test Parts A and B (TMT-A and B), and Digit Span Test were used to assess cognitive function. Cognitive variables and electroencephalography (EEG) data (activity, mobility, and complexity) were compared between the groups at rest and during cognitive demand (F3-F7, Fz-F3, Fz-F4, and F4-F8). There was a reduction in F3-F7 activity during the TMT-B in the COVID-19 group at 6-12 months compared to the controls (p = 0.01) at baseline (p = 0.03), a reduction in signal complexity at F3-F7 at rest in the COVID-19 group at baseline and 6-12 months compared to the controls (p < 0.001), and a reduction in Fz-F4 activity at rest from 6-12 months in the post-COVID group compared to baseline (p = 0.02) and 3-6 months (p = 0.04). At 6-12 months, there was a time increase in TMT-A in the COVID-19 group compared to that in the controls (p = 0.04). Some correlations were found between EEG data and cognitive test in both groups. In conclusion, there was a reduction in brain activity at rest in the Fz-F4 areas and during high cognitive demands in the F3-F7 areas. A reduction in signal complexity in F3-F7 at rest was found in the COVID-19 group at 6-12 months after acute infection. Furthermore, individuals with COVID-19 experience long-term changes in cognitive function.

Deep Learning Models for Predicting Epileptic Seizures Using iEEG Signals

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease characterized by a large electrical explosion that is excessive and uncontrolled, as defined by the world health organization. It is an anomaly that affects people of all ages. An electroencephalogram (EEG) of the brain activity is a widely known method designed as a reference dedicated to study epileptic seizures and to record the changes in brain electrical activity. Therefore, the prediction and early detection of epilepsy is necessary to provide timely preventive interventions that allow patients to be relieved from the harmful consequences of epileptic seizures. Despite decades of research, the prediction of these seizures with accuracy remains an unresolved problem. In this article, we have proposed five deep learning models on intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) datasets with the aim of automatically predicting epileptic seizures. The proposed models are based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, the fusion of the two CNNs (2-CNN), the fusion of the three CNNs (3-CNN), the fusion of the four CNNs (4-CNN), and transfer learning with ResNet50. The experimental results show that our proposed methods based on 3-CNN and 4-CNN gave the best values. They both achieve an accuracy value of 95%. Finally, our proposed methods are compared with previous studies, which confirm that seizure prediction performance was significantly improved.

Changes in Electrical Brain Activity Due to tDCS in Post-Stroke Chronic Aphasia: a Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Study

<h3>Research Objectives</h3> To better understand changes in brain activity related to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in post-stroke chronic aphasia. <h3>Design</h3> Double-blind randomized placebo controlled study design. <h3>Setting</h3> Casa Colina Research Institute. <h3>Participants</h3> Forty three post-stroke outpatients with chronic aphasia (32 males; age: 61±13y; 0.9-18years post-injury; 32 ischemic stroke; 19 non-fluent aphasia). Twenty patients were in the tDCS group. <h3>Interventions</h3> Participants were randomly assigned either to the tDCS group (cathode on Broca, left side) or to the sham/placebo group. Both groups had five consecutive days of 20 minutes session, using a FDA approved tDCS device (soterixmedical.com). Resting state electrophysiological recordings (5 minutes) and behavioral assessments were performed the week before/after tDCS/sham intervention. <h3>Main Outcome Measures</h3> 1) EEG data: power spectrum as well as coherence in delta, theta, alpha and beta frequencies in fronto-temporal electrodes; 2) Behavioral data: the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised (WAB-R total scores and subscores). <h3>Results</h3> For the behavioral data, groups differed, pre/post intervention, on the WAB-R total score (F=5.22; p=0.028) as well as for the Auditory-Verbal Comprehension (F=4.657; p=0.038) and Repetition (F=4.56; p=0.04) subscores. For the EEG, groups also differed, pre/post intervention, when looking at changes in coherence between Broca and Wernicke on the contralateral side (F8T4, alpha and beta) as well as between Broca area on bilateral sides (F7F8, beta) and other fronto-temporal electrodes (F3T3, beta; FzT5, alpha; F4T5, beta). Post-hoc analyses revealed a significant increase in coherence for the tDCS group (but not for the sham group) for the following electrodes: F8T4 (alpha), F3T3 (beta) and F4T5 (beta). <h3>Conclusions</h3> In this double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial, our findings show a higher improvement in language functions (for both receptive and expressive language skills) in response to treatment as compared to sham. These improvements seem related to an increase in coherence not only in ipsilateral but also contralateral fronto-temporal electrodes, suggesting a higher functional connectivity within the language network due to tDCS in post-stroke chronic aphasia. <h3>Author(s) Disclosures</h3> The authors have nothing to declare.

Changes in Brain Electrical Activity According to Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms in Survivors of the Sewol Ferry Disaster: A 1-year Longitudinal Study

ObjectiveThe pathology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with changes in brain structure and function, especially in the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and insula. Survivors of tragic accidents often experience psychological stress and develop post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), regardless of the diagnosis of PTSD. This study aimed to evaluate electroencephalographic changes according to PTSS in victims of a single traumatic event.MethodsThis study enrolled 60 survivors of the Sewol ferry disaster that occurred in 2014 from Danwon High School and collected electroencephalographic data through 19 channels twice for each person in 2014 and 2015 (mean 451.88 [standard deviation 25.77] days of follow-up). PTSS was assessed using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) and the participants were divided into two groups according to the differences in PCL-C scores between 2014 and 2015. Electroencephalographic data were converted to three-dimensional data to perform low-resolution electrical tomographic analysis.ResultsSignificant electroencephalographic changes over time were observed. The group of participants with worsened PCL-C score showed an increased change of delta slow waves in Brodmann areas 13 and 44, with the largest difference in the insula region, compared to those with improved PCL-C scores.ConclusionOur findings suggests that the electrophysiological changes in the insula are associated with PTSS changes.

A multimodal approach using TMS and EEG reveals neurophysiological changes in Parkinson's disease

IntroductionAlterations in large scale neural networks leading to neurophysiological changes have been described in Parkinson's disease (PD). The combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) has been suggested as a promising tool to identify and quantify neurophysiological mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate specific changes in electrical brain activity in response to stimulation of four brain areas in patients with PD. Methods21 healthy controls and 32 patients with PD underwent a combined TMS-EEG assessment that included stimulation of four brain areas: left M1, right M1, left dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and right DLPFC. Six measures were calculated to characterize the TMS evoked potentials (TEP) using EEG: (1) wave form adherence (WFA), (2) late phase deflection (LPD), (3) early phase deflection (EPD), (4) short-term plasticity (STP), (5) inter-trial adherence, and (6) connectivity between right and left M1 and DLPFC. A Linear mixed-model was used to compare these measures between groups and areas stimulated. ResultsPatients with PD showed lower WFA (p = 0.052), lower EPD (p = 0.009), lower inter-trial adherence (p < 0.001), and lower connectivity between homologs areas (p = 0.050), compared to healthy controls. LPD and STP measures were not different between the groups. In addition, lower inter-trial adherence correlated with longer disease duration (r = −0.355, p = 0.050). ConclusionsOur findings provide evidence to various alterations in neurophysiological measures in patients with PD. The higher cortical excitability along with increased variability and lower widespread of the evoked potentials in PD can elucidate different aspects related to the pathophysiology of the disease.

Does surprise enhance infant memory? Assessing the impact of the encoding context on subsequent object recognition.

A discrepancy between what was predicted and what is observed has been linked to increased looking times, changes in brain electrical activity, and increased pupil dilation in infants. These processes associated with heightened attention and readiness to learn might enhance the encoding and memory consolidation of the surprising object, as suggested by both the infant and the adult literature. We therefore investigated whether the presence of surprise during the encoding context enhances subsequent encoding and recognition memory processes for the items that violated infants' expectations. Seventeen-month-olds viewed 20 familiar objects, half of which were labeled correctly, while the other half were mislabeled. Subsequently, infants were presented with a silent recognition memory test where the previously labeled objects appeared along with new images. Pupil dilation was measured, with more dilated pupils indicating (1) surprise during those labeling events where the item was mislabeled and (2) successful retrieval processes during the memory test. Infants responded with more pupil dilation to mislabeling compared to correct labeling. Importantly, despite the presence of a surprise response during mislabeling, infants only differentiated between the previously seen and unseen items at the memory test, offering no evidence that surprise had facilitated the encoding of the mislabeled items.

EEG Correlates of Central Origin of Cancer-Related Fatigue.

The neurophysiological mechanism of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) remains poorly understood. EEG was examined during a sustained submaximal contraction (SC) task to further understand our prior research findings of greater central contribution to early fatigue during SC in CRF. Advanced cancer patients and matched healthy controls performed an elbow flexor SC until task failure while undergoing neuromuscular testing and EEG recording. EEG power changes over left and right sensorimotor cortices were analyzed and correlated with brief fatigue inventory (BFI) score and evoked muscle force, a measure of central fatigue. Brain electrical activity changes during the SC differed in CRF from healthy subjects mainly in the theta (4-8 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz) bands in the contralateral (to the fatigued limb) hemisphere; changes were correlated with the evoked force. Also, the gamma band (30-50 Hz) power decrease during the SC did not return to baseline after 2 min of rest in CRF, an effect correlated with BFI score. In conclusion, altered brain electrical activity during a fatigue task in patients is associated with central fatigue during SC or fatigue symptoms, suggesting its potential contribution to CRF during motor performance. This information should guide the development and use of rehabilitative interventions that target the central nervous system to maximize function recovery.

Assessing changes in brain electrical activity and functional connectivity while overtaking a vehicle

ABSTRACT Driving is a daily requirement and an indispensable activity for many people. However, still little is known about how driving is supported by the brain. We used electroencephalography to study the changes in brain activity and its functional connectivity in a simulated driving task. We focused on overtaking and studied this activity in three phases: before overtake, during overtake, and after overtake. Our results showed that mu power in motor and sensorimotor areas decreased during overtake and again increased after overtake. On the other hand, beta oscillations in frontal areas were at their highest level in the “before overtake” phase. It can be interpreted that the “before overtake” was the most attention-demanding phase. In addition, we found that the connectivity between right and left prefrontal regions and right and left occipital regions in alpha (and mu) band power was significantly stronger in the “during overtake” compared to the other two conditions.

Extended detrended fluctuation analysis of sound-induced changes in brain electrical activity

Abstract We discuss the problem of revealing structural changes in rat electroencephalograms (EEG) caused by activation of the brain lymphatic drainage function due to a sound-induced stress. For this purpose, we apply the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) with its extended version to characterize long-range power-law correlations associated with the slow-wave dynamics of the electrical activity of the brain. The proposed extended DFA (EDFA) provided a stronger separation of groups of rats with different permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) compared to the conventional DFA technique. We argue that such abilities of this tool can be useful in other diagnostic-related studies.

Central nervous system activities of extract Mangifera indica L.

Ethnobotanical relevanceLeaves of Mangifera indica L. have folk-uses in tropical regions of the world as health teas, as a remedy for exhaustion and fatigue, as a vegetable, and as a medicine. Mangifera indica leaf extract (MLE) had previously been demonstrated to alter brain electrical activity in-vivo. The aim of the present series of studies was to investigate whether mangiferin, a major compound in leaves and in MLE, is responsible for the neurocognitive activity of MLE, and if the CNS activities of MLE have translational potential. Materials and methodsMLE, tradename Zynamite, is produced by Nektium Pharma, Spain. Isolated mangiferin was tested in-vitro in radioligand binding and enzyme inhibition studies against 106 CNS targets. Changes in the electroencephalograms (EEG’s) of MLE and mangiferin were recorded in-vivo from four brain regions. Two double blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover clinical trials were conducted, each with 16 subjects. At 90 min and at 60 min respectively, after oral intake of 500 mg MLE, EEG recordings, psychometric tests, mood state, and tolerability were studied. ResultsIsolated mangiferin is a selective inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) with an IC50 of 1.1 μM, with no activity on the CNS targets of caffeine. Both mangiferin and MLE induce similar changes in long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus in-vitro, and induce a similar pattern of EEG changes in-vivo. In both translational clinical trials MLE was well tolerated, with no cardiovascular side-effects. In both studies MLE caused significant spectral changes in brain electrical activity in cortical regions during cognitive challenges, different to the attenuated spectral changes induced by caffeine. There were no significant changes in the psychometric tests other than reaction time for all groups. In the second study there was a trend to faster reaction time within group for MLE (p = 0.066) and the percentage improvement in reaction time for MLE compared to placebo was significant (p = 0.049). In the first study MLE improved all scores for Profile of Mood States (POMS), with the score for “fatigue” significantly improved (p = 0.015); in the second study the POMS score for “dejection” was improved in the caffeine group, p = 0.05. ConclusionsMangiferin is a COMT inhibitor of moderate potency and is the major CNS-active compound in MLE. Both mangiferin and MLE increase hippocampal LTP in-vitro, and induce a similar pattern of changes in brain electrical activity in-vivo.While the translational clinical trials of MLE are limited by being single dose studies in a small number of subjects, they provide the first clinical evidence that the extract is well tolerated with no cardiovascular side-effects, can induce changes in brain electrical activity, may give a faster reaction time, and decrease fatigue.These CNS activities support the reported folk-uses use of mango leaf tea as a substitute for tea and as a traditional remedy for fatigue and exhaustion. Extract Mangifera indica L., Zynamite, has nootropic potential, and larger clinical studies are needed to realise this potential.

Use of Quantitative Electroencephalography Biomarker in Characterizing Mild Cognitive Impairment in Malaysian Elderly

The elderly population rising rapidly in Malaysia and contributes to the increasing number of cognitive problems including mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, due to limited information regarding this problem which may progress towards severe neurologic degeneration, this problem rarely diagnosed and left untreated. Hence, the use of electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker is seen to be important with the spectral power, coherence and synchronization between the both halves of brain explain the pathophysiology underlined. This method is becoming popular for its capabilities in quantifying changes in brain electrical activity and provide early signs of brain impairment. This paper reviews the incidence of mild cognitive impairment in elderly as an early cognitive deterioration signal. It continues with the role of quantitative EEG analysis in providing the physiological meaning of their brain. This paper also provides the information about neurochemical changes which associated with MCI. The changes of brain electric activity in patients with different severity of coronary atherosclerosis one-year after coronary artery bypass grafting

Aim. To examine the brain electrical activity changes with the quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) indicators (the spectral power) in patients at 1 year after on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) depending on the severity of the coronary lesions. Methods. 65 patients were included in the study. Before performing CABG, they were divided into two groups depending on the severity of coronary artery disease according to the SYNTAX score: patients with mild coronary artery lesions – SYNTAX ≤22, (n = 28) and patients with severe coronary lesions – SYNTAX ≥ 23, (n = 37). EEG studies were performed in the preoperative period (at days 3–5 before GABG) and 1 year after surgery. Variance analysis with repeated comparisons (ANOVA) was used to compare pre-and postoperative EEG spectral power indicators in five clusters of the right and left hemispheres. Results. Patients with SYNTAX ≥23 had higher theta rhythm power values as compared with patients with SYNTAX ≤22 (p = 0.018) at 1 year after CABG, whereas these groups were comparable before the surgery. In addition, patients with severe lesions of the coronary arteries (SYNTAX ≥23) demonstrated an increase of theta rhythm power at 1 year after surgery in comparison to preoperative values (p = 0.017), this effect was not detected in patients with SYNTAX ≤22. Conclusion .One year after CABG, patients with severe coronary lesions (SYNTAX ≥23), demonstrated qEEG changes that resembled cortical dysfunction, showing significance of severity of coronary atherosclerosis, assessed by the SYNTAX score, as an integral indicator, indirectly characterizing neurophysiological status of patients.

Neurophysiological effects of a special extract of Cyperus esculentus L. (Cyperol)

The tuberous rhizomes of Cyperus esculentus L. have been used as a food by hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies for millennia. Varieties and selections of the plant are cultivated in southern Europe, north Africa and west Africa. There is popular food and beverage uses, and traditional medicinal uses suggest that the “tubers” may have functional food potential. The first standardized extract of Cyperus esculentus, Cyperol, has been developed and commercialized. In order to characterize the central nervous system activity of this extract a series of neurophysiological studies were undertaken in-vitro, in-vivo and in a pilot clinical study. The results of the studies indicate that Cyperol induces changes in brain electrical activity (EEG), demonstrating that bioactive compounds from the extract are absorbed, are bioavailable, and that these compounds or their metabolites cross the blood brain barrier. Taken overall, the results of the reported studies indicate calming activity without sedation. This extract does indeed have functional food potential and could be used to maintain a calm state of mind while dealing with cognitively demanding work. Preliminary indications suggest that the extract may have anxiolytic potential which should be explored in future clinical studies.
