Technological Innovation and the Use of Nanotechnology in Companies

Objective: This article aims to highlight the types, benefits, and challenges of technological innovation in companies, the use of nanotechnology, its benefits, applicability, and challenges. Theoretical Framework: Firstly, the benefits and challenges of technological innovation were listed, the types of innovation that can be used and then, within this process, the focus was on nanotechnology, presenting its methods and applications. Method: The methodology adopted comprises the foundation through bibliographic texts and a brief analysis of a company to confirm the benefits listed in the theory. Therefore, this article uses exploratory research as a methodology. Results and Discussion: Technological innovation uses technologies, both consolidated and disruptive. Therefore, it brings benefits such as competitive advantage, differentiation, and market gain. Nanotechnology is a technological innovation, so its benefits are the same as those evident in this type of innovation. As challenges, we understand high investments, continuous innovation, and impeding regulations. Research Implications: When analyzing Nanox, a nanotechnology company, it became clear that this technology can be applied to packaging, construction, clothing, water treatment and many others. In theory, it was demonstrated that in technological innovation, nanotechnology enables the manipulation of nano components in the creation of disruptive products, which can be applied to various products and materials, which has been confirmed in practice. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by providing evidence of the characteristics and benefits of the main technologies that make up technological innovation. The relevance and value of this research are highlighted by providing a better understanding of current technologies and innovations.

Utilizing Technological Innovations and Service Design to Foster Emotional Well-Being Among Individuals with Cognitive Disorders

This paper aims to explore the impact and challenges of technological innovation and service design on emotional health services for individuals with cognitive impairments. It begins by analyzing the relationship between cognitive impairments and emotional health, followed by a discussion on the application of technological innovation in emotional health services for individuals with cognitive impairments. Subsequently, it examines the influence of service design on emotional health for these individuals and the integration of technological innovation and service design. Finally, it discusses the future development direction and challenges of using technological innovation and service design to promote emotional health for individuals with cognitive impairments.

Technological Innovation Cooperation in Mega Construction Projects: A Conceptual Framework

Due to the dynamic and complex nature of mega construction projects (MCPs), mega construction project risks (MCPRs) have significantly increased in recent years. Technological innovation cooperation (TIC) is accepted as an approach to solve these issues. However, considering the new technological innovation challenges, technological innovation risks (TIRs) have been identified as a limitation of TIC. This study aims to develop a conceptual framework to explain TIC for MCPs. It is based on a review of the literature, engineering practice, and logical reasoning. The conceptual framework describes the interaction between MCPRs and TIC. It points out that MCPRs drive technological innovation, and technological innovation objectives guide the TIC. TIC has a negative effect on solving TIRs, and TIRs positively affect MCPRs. Cooperation performance will mediate the relationship between TIC and MCPRs. The conceptual framework may provide a theoretical basis to guide future empirical studies that validate the relationship between MCPRs and TIC and puts forward reasonable suggestions for MCPs.

This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted impact of technological innovations on accounting practices, focusing on three key variables: the adoption of accounting software, inventory management systems, and the integration of online payment systems. It scrutinizes the efficiency of accounting practices through the lenses of time efficiency and error rates, dissecting the interplay between these variables. A systematic evaluation of the empirical literature reveals the transformative influence of technology on modern accounting procedures, providing critical insights into best practices and areas for future research. The empirical literature provides compelling evidence of the transformative power of technology-driven innovations, enhancing data accuracy and real-time insights into financial metrics. However, research gaps persist, such as the integration of accounting software with online payment systems, the impact on compliance and reporting requirements, and the unique challenges faced by small businesses. This review highlights the need for balanced exploration of both the advantages and potential challenges of technological innovation in accounting practices. By addressing these research gaps and fostering a nuanced understanding, organizations can make informed decisions and leverage technology effectively to enhance accounting efficiency.

Technological innovation and the co-production of accounting services in small accounting firms

PurposeIncreasingly, emerging information technologies such as shared software and continuous accounting are offering alternative ways to perform accounting tasks in a supposedly more efficient fashion. Yet, few studies have investigated how they affect the provision of accounting services, especially in the context of small accounting firms, which provide legal and tax services to entrepreneurs and businesses. Drawing on the service perspective, the paper critically examines how technological innovation challenges and reconfigures the co-production of accounting services in these firms.Design/methodology/approachThe paper answers calls issued in prior studies to conduct empirical research on emerging information technologies for accountants. It focuses on the specific context of small accounting firms and draws on interviews with small accounting firms' managers (n = 20).FindingsThe study emphasizes five significant challenges that accounting firm managers face when using information technologies to support the provision of their services (ensuring reliability, factoring in their heterogeneous client base, repricing, training clients to use new technologies and promoting advisory services). Information technologies are shown to have a structuring role in the co-production of accounting services, as they lead to reconfigurations of the relationships between accountants and their clients. A range of four configurations is developed to highlight accountants' strategies to maintain collaborative relationships with their clients while integrating new technologies into their work practices.Originality/valueBy conceptualizing accounting services as a co-production process, the paper offers new insights into the implications of emerging information technologies for small accounting firms.

Addressing the Dynamic Information Technology Landscape: A Course Reflection

The field of Information systems (IS) is dynamic and rapidly changing due to technology innovation and emerging technologies. The changing nature of this field poses a significant challenge for educators trying to stay up to date in their preparation of future technology leaders. Despite this challenge, the IS2020 model curriculum, as well as organizational leaders, are calling on IS educators to find ways to develop and deliver student competencies related to innovation and emerging technologies to meet the needs of the IS workforce. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to present a plan for the teaching and learning of these topics within an IS program. This paper outlines a framework for course delivery based on foundational topics that can be utilized for mastering the technology innovation challenge in the classroom and be adapted in response to the changing nature of the discipline. The course plan focuses on theoretical foundations and connects with practice for exploring the application of concepts so students can be introduced to what is really happening in relation to technology in business and the discipline of IS. The course model was tested in-person and online and can be adapted depending on university schedules and teaching modalities.

Labor and informal work in North-South relations: a study on Iberian countries and Latin-America

Departing from the North/South dialogue, and considering the historical relations between the Iberian countries and Latin America (LA), the aim is to analyze trends, contrasts and asymmetries in different scales. Asymmetric powers and dynamic tensions and negotiations are discussed both in the world-system scale and in the European Union context. In the light of recent transformations in international capitalism, our paper addresses, on the one hand, the phenomenon of informality/labor precariousness and, on the other, resorting to a more prospective record, diagnoses some of the recent challenges of technological innovation and digitalization. Considering an ongoing project related to these issues (Latwork), our analysis encompasses the sociological knowledge developed by diverse research teams on the labor field, namely regarding informality and technological innovation. For this purpose, we also gather quantitative data on research teams from the universities of la countries (Brazil, Argentine and Chile) using factorial analysis. The aim is to foster decent work, particularly in the Latin American countries under study, where, as we know, the scourge of informality and vulnerability of the working classes is a structural feature that remains from colonial heritage till the early peripheral industrialization. Thus, the spirit of our study lies in the effort to understand the changes taking place in the field of labor relations at a time when global capitalism is at a crossroads in the face of the brutal impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The law applicable to third-party effects of transactions in intermediated securities

Abstract The conflict-of-laws rules applicable to the third-party effects of transactions in intermediated securities have attracted a great deal of interest in legal practice and academia. The article reviews the current legal developments in the European Union (EU), the international trends (Geneva Securities Convention and Hague Securities Convention), and the challenges of technological innovation. The article proposes interpreting the category of conflict-of-laws rules applicable to the third-party effects of transactions in intermediated securities in a concise, short, functional, and abstract way. Furthermore, it puts the discussions on the proper connecting factor into context and comments on the most recent developments in the EU in this respect. Finally, it adds to the discussion on proper connecting factors for digital ledger technology-based settlement systems (blockchain) and other current trends.

The Effects of Human Capital Development on Organizational Performance

the aim of this research work is to highpoint all the effects of human capital development on organisational performance in Trustfund Pension Limited. Modern business nature is in the state of disorder, where competition is very high. Organizations that neglect change may be required to change from existence to non-existence, therefore survival is the solution. To live, companies must uncover all available capital that can bring about competitive advantage. To create a competitive advantage, it is essential that firms truly influence on the workforce as a competitive weapon. Precisely, the study aimed to carry out the following objectives: to establish the relationship between Human capital management and organizational performance, to highlight the needs for human capital development for improved organizational performance. The study had a population size of 152, out of which a sample size of 110 was realized using Taro Yamane formula at 5% error to tolerance and 95 % level of confidence. Instrument used for data collection was primarily questionnaire. The total numbers of 110 copies of the questionnaire were distributed while 80 copies were returned. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Two hypotheses were tested using Pearson’s moment correlation coefficient. The findings suggest that there was significant relationship between human capital management and organisational performance. The necessity for human capital development include teaching the skills and knowledge requires in new staff, upgrading the skills and knowledge of old employees, meeting the challenges of technological innovation acquiring the skills required in the competitive market and enhancing human capital resourcefulness. The study recommends that Human resource manage should ensure that proper identification, determination and assessment of human capital needs in the organization

Innovation Types and Regulation: the Regulatory Framing of Nanotechnology as “Incremental” or “Radical” Innovation

AbstractThe regulatory literature has long been concerned with the challenges of technological innovation, yet it says relatively little about what we understand as “innovative” and how innovation “types” impact on regulation. This article unpacks the concept of “innovation” and analyses its significance for the development of regulatory strategy. It shows that innovation types – such as “incremental” and “radical” innovation – are not clear-cut, but involve differences of interpretation. This interpretive flexibility makes them powerful discursive resources in regulatory decision-making. Through a study of the EU’s regulation of nanotechnology, the article shows how arguments of “incremental” and “radical” innovation can be mobilised to very different effect. These different ways of conceptualising new technology affect decisions on: (i) the desirability of legislative reform; (ii) the evidence-base for regulation; and (iii) the use of the precautionary principle. The study also shows how the framing of technology as “incrementally” innovative can contribute to a strategy of “deliberate regulatory ignorance”. The article concludes by arguing that the incremental/radical distinction can be put to more positive use, so that regulatory choices take account of the different techno-scientific and socio-economic dimensions of innovation.

Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Education, Social Good and Economic Development

The innovation ecosystem provides benefits and challenges for multiple institutional actors like universities, industry, government, NGOs, and private funding agencies, as well as individuals in a rapidly evolving and dynamic environment. First, we describe the changing role of universities-whereby, the support of innovation and entrepreneurship is developing into a core mission of universities. We then describe strategies within the United States and globally to help students learn about innovation and entrepreneurship. Finally, we explore the benefits and challenges of technological innovation for economic development, emphasizing how such development relates to the global problem of underprivileged communities, both in developed and developing countries, and the special concerns of economic development for developing countries.

Analysis of Innovation in FCC M&A Transactions from 1997 to 2015

As a term, “innovation” is used inconsistently, often resembling ‘cheap talk.’ In telecom. and media policy debates like network neutrality, both those supporting and against proposed regulation will claim their position improves innovation, while their opponents’ position will harm innovation. However, “innovation” becomes a valuable legal term of art when used in mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”) decisions, particularly when the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) evaluates “Major Transactions.” The primary aims of this work are to clarify the meaning of innovation as it pertains to competition regulation and M&A strategy and offer insights into how innovation should influence future regulation and strategy formation. After the Telecommunications Act of 1996 enabled telecommunications and media companies to compete in once-restricted lines of business, there was a flurry of M&A activity that has continued to this day. Simultaneously, innovations related to digital convergence have placed these once disparate lines of business in increasingly direct competition with one another. This research reviews the 82 FCC “Major Transaction” orders between the passage of the Act and 2015, using a textual coding method related to the various economic and legal definitions of innovation to analyze all 509 instances of the grammatical variations of the term's use. Four primary conceptual definitions of innovation are identified and explored through legal analysis, with the term’s usage patterns analyzed in connection to bundling, business mavericks, business innovation, innovation markets, technological innovation, and the concept’s integration into the competition regulation framework. Each of 82 orders is also categorized by the general markets involved and the type of transaction under review, and explored through a combination of the results of this coded data and legal research, which clarifies and reframes innovation discussions surrounding the precedents contained within the FCC’s major mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and licensing transactions. Policy and business strategy conclusions are considered, with insights about how technological innovation challenges antitrust law’s discrete market definitions and why open access factors across a broader range of indirect competitors may be more important.

Systemic Patent Study on Technological Innovation in the EU Countries since 1980

In recent years, it is not only an innovator (institution), who is important for technology innovation, but increasingly important have become the micro and macro environment, since technological innovation requires cooperation, supportive legal, political, managerial, economic, social or environmental factors. As analogies in Japan, the USA, India or China, also the European Community, has to respond adequately to this trend through supportive legislation, management, infrastructure and cooperation. This article has the key purpose to outline selected issues and challenges of technological innovation and management in the world, as input into the comprehensive analysis of technology patenting in the EU countries since 1980. As a basic research methodology we chose patent research and database analyses of the EPO and WIPO databases. We examined the granted patents in comparison with several additional indicators, such as, a number of inhabitants, national GDP, VC investment, or patent publications by technology. In this limited patent analysis, we tried to distinguish between developing and developed countries of the EU. The result of this research shows that there are significant differences between developed and developing countries of the EU, not only in terms of technological innovation and patent intensity, or commercialisation of innovation, but also related to the focus and management of the technology innovation.

In recent years, it is not only a researcher, or a developer, who is important for technology innovation, but increasingly important there have become the micro and macro environment of the institution/company. Since, many times, technology innovation requires cooperation within the business microenvironment and supportive legal, political, economic, social or environmental factors. As analogies in Japan, USA, India, or China, also the European Community has to respond adequately to this trend through supportive legislation, management, infrastructure and cooperation. The key research question of this analysis is, how big is the difference in technological innovation/patenting between developed and developing countries of the EU and why? Also, the selected issues and challenges of technological innovation and management create the input into this systemic study of technology patenting in the EU countries since 1980.

Distinguishing True from other Hybrids. A Case Study of the Merits and Pitfalls of Devolved Regulation in the UK

The model of “decentered regulation” was claimed to offer the ideal instrument to cope with the specific challenges of technological innovation in a society characterized by diversity in moral beliefs. The central question of this article is whether the “model of decentered regulation” indeed brought the solutions that were expected from it. This question will be answered by using the case study of the formulation of the rules concerning the creation of human animal hybrid embryos in the United Kingdom. The analysis of this issue will be used to reflect on four reasons that are brought forward in favour of the model of decentered regulation: 1) the inclusion of necessary scientific expertise; 2) a flexible and efficient mechanism of rule change; 3) coping with diversity in moral beliefs; 4) coping with the changeability of these beliefs in time.

A Mentoring Model for Interactive Online Learning in Support of a Technology Innovation Challenge Grant

The Lewis & Clark Rediscovery Project is a technology professional development program designed to help teachers restructure teaching and learning practices in the classroom, and to foster technology use in the schools. The 5-year program (extended into a 6th) was funded in 1999 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education: Technology Innovation Challenge Grant. The Rediscovery Project’s “touchstones” include the historic record of challenges and encounters of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery on their epic expedition, community studies highlighting 200 years of change along the Lewis and Clark Trail, and the development of technology-infused inquiry in teaching and learning. The program immersed 51 lead participant K–12 teachers in eight states along the Lewis and Clark Trail in activities designed to increase technology efficacy and facilitate the infusion of inquiry-based learning projects into their own classrooms. The participants are Lewis & Clark Rediscovery Project fellows who were successfully mentored through online courses and in summer workshops. Fundamental to the success of the project was the development of a model to mentor teachers in the field and to help facilitate outreach and peer mentoring of technology infusion across many districts. We have included in this review a description of the major Rediscovery professional development model strategies and activities, as well as lessons learned and emerging trends and movements in interactive online teaching and learning.

The challenges of technological innovation in HIV

The challenges of transferring biomedical advances and non-biomedical technological innovations in HIV prevention and treatment to the field, are a theme of this year’s XVII International AIDS Conference. In the HIV field, innovations are often understood in exclusively biomedical or psychosocial terms. Related to these understandings are well-worn disciplinary distinctions. Thus vaccines and drug treatments are typically understood as biotechnological. They are seen as the proper preserve of laboratory studies and clinical trials that are charged with the creation of biotechnologies to protect human bodies from HIV infection or reduce damaging effects when infection has occurred. By contrast, innovations in safer-sex campaigns and other forms of behavioural prevention are generally considered the mainstay of the social sciences. Research from these fields is intended to provide insights into the beliefs and practices that might inform policy and programmes aimed at individual behaviours. Interdisciplinary collaborations generally involve social-science study of human experiences of and responses to biomedical phenomena. Good examples are the studies of adherence to HIV antiretroviral drug treatments and studies of the effect of antiretrovirals on concepts of risk and risk behaviours. In such studies, the innovation is often taken to be separate from the individuals that participate in it. The goal is to understand how the initiative affects or is experienced by participants.

Design as a Focus for Technology Integration

The Plugging in to L.I.T.E.S. project (Leaders in Technology Enhanced Schools-a previously funded Technology Innovation Challenge grant project) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) has been very successful in its attempts to enhance the technology integration skills of teacher education students, and to improve the capabilities of our faculty members to provide effective modeling of technology integration strategies. This was accomplished through the use of professional development activities focused on design tasks, and the use of a “design studio” metaphor to organize and promote the redesign of our curriculum to align with the Illinois Core Technology Standards required of all newly certified teachers. To further the technology integration skills of our teacher candidates, partnerships were established with 25 school districts in our service area where many L.I.T.E.S.-trained mentor teachers work, and teacher candidates rotated through these schools in a two-year, field-based teacher education program that emphasized technology integration. In addition, a comprehensive online resource was designed to explicate the state's technology standards for students and to assist them in the development of electronic portfolios that demonstrate their technology integration competencies. To date, more than 800 teacher education students have been supported in their efforts to plan and implement instructional practices that effectively integrate technology. The lessons learned through this project will hopefully provide guidance to those involved with technology integration in teacher education programs.
