Utilization and associated factors of cervical cancer screening service among eligible women attending maternal health services at Adare General Hospital, Hawassa city, Southern Ethiopia

This particular study aimed to assess the magnitude of cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among eligible women attending maternal health services at Adare General Hospital, Hawassa city, Southern Ethiopia, 2022. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted using a systematic random sampling technique among 299 eligible women from March 1- to April 30, 2022. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews using a pretested structured questionnaire. Data was also entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 25.0 for analysis. Both bivariable and multi-variable logistic regression model was fitted and the presence of association was declared at a p value of less than 0.05. The strenth of association was determined using adjusted odd ratios together with a 95% confidence interval. Among interviewed women, 19.8% (95% CI 15.5%, 24.0%) of them had screened for cervical cancer at least once within the past five years. Place of residence (AOR = 0.37; 95% CI 0.14–0.96), modern contraception use (AOR = 2.49; 95% CI 1.04–5.96), discussion about cervical cancer with healthcare providers (AOR = 2.34; 95% CI 1.08–5.07), and comprehensive knowledge about cervical cancer (AOR = 0.25; 95% CI 0.10–0.62) were independently associated with cervical cancer screening service utilization. The study depicted relatively low utilization of cervical cancer screening services. The women were more likely to utilize the service if they are dwellers of urban residences, used modern contraception, had discussion about cervical cancer with healthcare providers, and had good comprehensive knowledge about cervical cancer. Thus, women living in rural areas should get more emphasis on cervical cancer prevention strategies, and improving consistent discussion about cervical cancer with clients visiting for maternal health services by healthcare providers in health facilities also be recommended.

Beliefs and Utilization of Cervical Cancer Screening by Female Health Care Workers in Saudi Arabia Using the Health Belief Model: A Nationwide Study.

Epidemiologically, cervical cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer among females globally and the third most commonly diagnosed gynecological cancer in Saudi Arabia. Screening is an important measure to prevent it. The current study aimed to assess, epidemiologically, female healthcare workers' (HCWs) utilization of cervical cancer screening services and its association with their beliefs about cervical cancer and the screening test, as well as their personal characteristics. This cross-sectional study included female HCWs in Saudi Arabia. A predesigned, self-administered survey was used to collect data, and it included questions about sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics, self-utilization of cervical cancer screening services, and the Health Belief Model (HBM) scale. Regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors of cervical cancer screening service utilization. A total of 1857 females participated. The cervical cancer screening test uptake was 24.6% of ever-married females. However, 45% of the participants were willing to have the test. The odds of utilizing a screening were significantly higher among older participants, those with a higher level of education, and those with a higher number of pregnancies. Furthermore, HCWs with a history of HPV infection, cervical cancer in the family, hormonal contraception, or immunocompromised diseases were more likely to have the screening. An increase in the mean scores of the perceived benefits and motives subscales of HBM was associated with an increase in the uptake of screening. However, an increase in perceived barrier scores was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of cervical cancer screening uptake. Low cervical screening uptake and slightly higher intentions to have the test exist among HCWs. Certain personal factors and health beliefs significantly affect the utilization of the screening test. Approaches that target perceived benefits, health motivation, and perceived barriers to improve the screening rates of cervical cancer among HCWs are recommended.

Cervical Cancer Screening Service Utilization and Associated Factors Among Women Living With HIV Receiving Anti-Retroviral Therapy at Adama Hospital Medical College, Ethiopia.

Cervical cancer is the second highest cause of cancer-related mortality in the world, and it is one of the top 20 causes of mortality in Ethiopia. Even though cervical cancer is more common among women living with HIV, the utilization of cervical cancer screening services remains low in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among women living with HIV receiving anti-retroviral therapy at Adama Hospital Medical College, Ethiopia. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of 304 women living with HIV from 1st-30th June 2022. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The data were entered into Epi info version 7 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Bi-variable logistic regression analysis was used to identify candidate variables at p < .25. Finally, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent predictors of cervical cancer screening service utilization at p < .05 with 95% confidence intervals. The magnitude of cervical cancer screening service utilization was 26.9% (95% CI: 22.0, 32.6). Being a government employee (AOR: 8.09, 95% CI: 1.5, 41.19), having a family history of cervical cancer (AOR: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.02, 11.9), being aware of cervical cancer screening (AOR: 3.75, 95% CI: 2.11, 14.7), having a history of sexually transmitted infection (AOR: 3.14, 95% CI: 1.95, 10.2), and heard about cervical cancer (AOR: 2.6, 95% CI: 1.05, 6.41) were associated with cervical cancer screening service utilization. The magnitude of cervical cancer screening service utilization was low. It was associated with occupation status, family history of cervical cancer, awareness about cervical cancer screening, history of STI, and ever heard about cervical cancer. Thus, to maximize utilization, health education programs and other multidisciplinary strategies had to be implemented.

Determinants of cervical cancer screening service utilization among women attending healthcare services in Amhara region referral hospitals: a case–control study

BackgroundCervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death and one of the top 20 causes of death among women in Ethiopia. Cervical cancer screening service has a vital value to reduce morbidity and mortality. Even though cervical cancer screening service utilization in Ethiopia is unacceptably low, its determinant factors were not well studied in the study area. Hence, this study was aimed at filling this information gap. This study aimed to identify determinants of cervical cancer screening service utilization among women attending healthcare services in Amhara region referral hospitals, Ethiopia.MethodsHospital-based case–control study was conducted among 441 women (147 cases and 294 controls) from May to July 2021. Cases were included consecutively and controls were selected using a systematic random sampling technique from the randomly selected hospitals. A pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from respondents. The data were entered into Epi data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed. Adjusted odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and p value < 0.05 were used to estimate the strength and significance of the association.ResultA total of 147 cases and 294 controls were enrolled in this study. Women with 30–39 years-old [AOR = 2.3; 95% CI 1.21, 4.68] and 40–49 years-old [AOR = 4.4 95% CI 1.97, 10.12], urban residence [AOR = 2.6; 95% CI 1.36, 5.21], secondary education [AOR = 4.4; 95% CI 2.18, 8.87] and diploma and above [AOR = 2.0; 95% CI: 1.05, 4.59], ever gave birth [AOR = 9.4; 95% CI 4.92, 18.26], having multiple sexual partners [AOR = 2.8; 95% CI 1.60, 5.03], good knowledge towards cervical cancer screening [AOR = 3.6; 95% CI 2.07, 6.43] and positive attitude on cervical cancer screening [AOR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.20, 3.70] were significant determinants of cervical cancer screening service utilization.ConclusionIn this study, age (30–39 and 40–49), urban residence, secondary education, ever gave birth, good knowledge of cervical cancer screening, positive attitude towards cervical cancer screening, and having multiple sexual partners were significant determinants of cervical cancer screening service utilization. There is a need to strengthen the policy and health education on safe sexual practices and healthy lifestyles through information dissemination and communication to scale up screening service utilization.

Predictors of cervical cancer screening service utilization among female health care workers in a tertiary hospital in Osogbo, Osun State.

Cervical cancer is the second commonest cancer in Nigerian women that can be reduced through effective screening. This study aimed to determine the utilization of cervical cancer screening services among female health care workers in a tertiary hospital. It is a descriptive cross-sectional study that utilized a pretested questionnaire to collect data from 170 respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. 61.2% had good knowledge about cervical cancer, and 75.3% reported utilization of cervical cancer screening services. Factors that affect utilization of cervical cancer screening services are fear of negative results (82.4%), lack of time (78.2%), cost of screening (63.5%), and support from husband (61.2%). Logistic regression analysis showed that age (β = 4.009, p = < 0.001), year of experience (β = -4.350, p <0.001), fear of negative results (β = -2.479, p = 0.014) and lack of support from husband (β = 4.380, p < 0.001) significantly predict utilization of screening services. Conclusively, female health workers know about the prevention of cervical cancer and are willing to utilize screening. It is recommended that cervical cancer screening should be made mandatory for female health care workers, to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer cases.

Breast and cervical cancer screening adherence in Jiangsu, China: An ecological perspective.

BackgroundHigh screening coverage can effectively reduce the mortality in breast and cervical cancer. Further research on extending the coverage of breast and cervical cancer screening in China is required. This study explored factors influencing women's “two-cancer” screening service utilization using an ecological approach.MethodsData were obtained from the National Health Services Survey (NHSS) conducted in 2018 in Jiangsu, China. A total of 3,500 women aged 18–64 years were included in the analysis. Chi-squared test, hierarchical multiple logistic regression analysis, and binary logistic regression analysis were performed.ResultsIn total, 44.1% of the women had been screened for breast cancer (BC) and 40.9% for cervical cancer (CC). Breast cancer screening (BCS) and cervical cancer screening (CCS) differed significantly in the following common categories: age, gestational experiences, chronic disease status, body mass index (BMI), exercise, health checkup, marital status, number of children, employment, education, family doctors, and health records. In the results of hierarchical multiple logistic regression analysis, the explanatory power of the final model was 37.5% and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.812. The results showed that being in the age group of 35–64 years, having gestational experiences, having chronic diseases, exercising, having a health checkup, being married, having children, and being employed were statistically significant positive predictors of “two-cancer” screening adherence. The household size was a barrier. For BCS, obesity was also a negative factor, and a higher overall self-related health status was a positive factor. Being married and living in households of three or more families were not predictors. For CCS, having health records was also positively significant, while having chronic disease did not influence adherence.ConclusionThe findings provide an ecological explanation for women's BCS and CCS service utilization. Both proximal and distal factors should be considered to achieve a high coverage rate.

Determinants of Cervical Cancer Screening Service Utilization Among HIV-Positive Women Aged 25 Years and Above Attending Adult ART Clinics in Southern Tigray, Ethiopia.

BackgroundCervical cancer and human immunodeficiency virus prevention are public health priorities in Ethiopia. Despite cervical cancer being preventable with the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine and cervical cancer screening, HIV-infected women still have a low rate of screening, and data are scarce in this country. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among HIV-positive women in Southern Tigray, Ethiopia, 2018.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was performed from March 1st to May 15th, 2018. We recruited 465 HIV-positive women using a systematic random sampling method. Data were collected using a pre-tested structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, followed by multivariable logistic regression analysis were performed. Crude odds ratios, adjusted odds ratios, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported.ResultsIn this study, only 8% of HIV-positive women were screened for cervical cancer. The most frequently cited barrier by participants to getting screened was feeling healthy 282 (65.9%). Multiparity {AOR = 4.12, 95% CI = (1.70, 9.95)}, provider recommendation to get screened {AOR = 3.20, 95%CI = (1.34, 7.65)}, having good knowledge {AOR = 4.33, 95%CI = (1.66-11.29)}, and high perceived susceptibility for cervical cancer {AOR = 3.10, 95% CI = (1.31-7.33)} were the factors significantly associated with cervical cancer screening service utilization.ConclusionsThe prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization was quite low. Provider’s recommendation to get screened, multiparity, knowledge, and perceived susceptibility were factors strongly associated with the service utilization. There is a need of routine counseling of health care providers for all HIV-positive women to get screened. Women’s lack of knowledge also needs to be addressed by informing every HIV-positive woman that they are more susceptible to cervical cancer, and that screening is critical to fighting against the disease.

Utilization of cervical cancer screening service and associated factors among women of reproductive age group in Ilu Abba Bor zone, southwestern Ethiopia, 2019: Cross-sectional study.

Introduction:Cervical cancer is one of the severest risks to women’s life. It is the main reason for more than half million of morbidity and 266,000 deaths worldwide annually.Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the level of cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among women of the reproductive age group coming for health care service to public health facilities of Ilu Abba Bor zone, southwestern Ethiopia, 2019.Methods:An institutional-based cross-sectional study design was employed from 1 May to 30 May 2019. Participants were selected by systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected using a pretested questionnaire and entered into Epi data 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to observe the factors associated with cervical cancer screening utilization service. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was used. Variables with a p-value of <0.05 were considered to be statistically significant.Results:From a total of 259 women involved in the study, about 19 (7.3%) of the study participants had been screened for cervical cancer at least once in the past 3 years during the study period. Educational status: primary (grade 1–8) (adjusted odds ratio = 3; 95% confidence interval = (1.15–7.91)), secondary (grade 9–12) (adjusted odds ratio = 4.21; 95% confidence interval = (1.04–7.46)), and tertiary (grade 12+) (adjusted odds ratio = 6.01; 95% confidence interval = (3.01–11.35)), nulliparous (adjusted odds ratio = 0.256; 95% confidence interval = (0.105–0.642)), and looking for information about cervical cancer (adjusted odds ratio = 3.4; 95% confidence interval = (1.8–6.2)) were significant factors associated with utilization of cervical cancer screening service.Conclusion:The study revealed that there was low cervical cancer screening service utilization in the study area. Educational status, parity, and looking for cervical cancer information were independently associated with cervical cancer screening utilization service. There is need to improve women’s education, dissemination of information about importance of cervical cancer screening, and focus on nulliparous women to have good practice of cervical cancer screening.

Abstract PO-252: Impact of COVID-19 public policies on utilization on cervical cancer screening in Puerto Rico during March 15, 2020 to July 31, 2020

Abstract Introduction: Among jurisdictions of the United States, Puerto Rico (PR) has the highest incidence of cervical cancer, and cervical cancer screening (CCS) is below 80%. Public health emergencies have an impact on people's access to health care services. We examined the impact of the public policy implemented by the government of Puerto Rico during the first 5 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in the utilization of CCS for participants of the Government's Public Health Plan. Methodology: This was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 40 government executive orders (issued between March 15 to July 31, 2020) were analyzed according to the level of restrictions they imposed on the population. Three periods with the greatest restrictions were identified: two of them in the government's initial response phase (March 15-30th &amp; March 31st-April 12th) and one in the re-opening phase (July 17-July 31st). We examined the utilization of all modalities of CCS (pap test only and pap + HPV contesting). Rate ratios (RRs) were estimated to compare to CCS rates during periods of 2020 and compared to 2018-2019. Results: In comparison to 2019, CCS decreased during the most restricted period (March 31st-April 12th) of the response phase (RR= 0.19, 95% CI=0.15-0.24 for women 21-29 years; RR= 0.04 95% CI= 0.03-0.05 for women 30-65 years). During the re-opening phase, screening services started to rebound. However, an increase in COVID-19 cases led to another restriction (July 17-July31st), which led to a second phase of decrease in utilization of CCS (RR=0.17, 95% CI=0.13-0.21 for women 21-29 years (RR= 0.09, 95% CI=0.08-0.10 for women 30-65 years). Conclusion: Our results evidence how the public policy implemented as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Puerto Rico had a direct impact on the utilization of CCS services in this Hispanic population. Future studies should examine screening patterns and social barriers of service utilization after July 2020 in Puerto Rico. Impact of knowledge and attitude on the utilization rate of cervical cancer screening tests among Ethiopian women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

IntroductionCervical cancer is a major public health problem, particularly in resource-limited settings. The use of vaccination and screening tests has reduced the burden of cervical cancer in developed countries. However, the situation is quite the reverse in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the pooled impact of knowledge and attitude on the prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization rates among Ethiopian women.MethodsStudies that examined cervical cancer screening service utilization among women in Ethiopia were searched from five international databases. Cochran’s Q chi-square and the I-squared test statistics were used to check the presence of heterogeneity among the included studies. The funnel plot and Egger’s regression tests were also used to assess the presence of publication bias. A weighted DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model was employed. Subgroup analysis was performed by the study population concerning the prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization rates. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to assess the effect of a single study on the pooled estimates. Data analysis was performed using STATA™ Version 14 software.ResultsA total of 44 studies with 28,186 study participants were included. The estimated pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization was 8.11% (95% CI: 7.26, 8.97). After adjustment for publication bias with the trim and fill analysis, the estimated prevalence rate appeared to be 5.47% (95% CI: 4.66, 6.28). The prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization was higher among HIV-positive women, 16.85%, and in studies conducted among health care workers, 10.24%, than the general population. The pooled effect of knowledge on the utilization of cervical cancer screening tests among Ethiopian women was statistically significant (AOR = 3.20, 95% CI: 1.63, 6.31). Similarly, the pooled estimated odds of utilizing cervical cancer screening tests were 6.1 times higher (AOR = 6.09, 95% CI: 1.09, 34.36) among women who had a favorable attitude towards the screening tests.ConclusionKnowledge and attitude had a significant impact on the prevalence of cervical cancer screening test utilization rates among women in Ethiopia. However, the prevalence of cervical cancer screening service utilization among Ethiopian women is very low. Hence, large-scale awareness programs and situation-based strategies need to be designed to increase the uptake of cervical cancer screening services in the country.

Cervical Cancer Screening Service Utilization and Associated Factors among Women in the Shabadino District, Southern Ethiopia.

Background Cervical cancer is the major cause of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide with an estimated 528,000 new cases and 266,000 deaths annually. In Ethiopia, there are 7095 new cases and 4732 deaths of cervical cancer every year. But cervical cancer screening utilization remains limited. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess cervical cancer screening utilization and associated factors among women in the Shabadino district, Southern Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Shabadino district, Southern Ethiopia, using a structured questionnaire. A systematic random sampling method was used to recruit 536 study participants. The collected data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to assess factors associated with cervical cancer screening utilization at a 95% level of significance and a p value of less than 0.05. Results The study revealed that among 506 women, only 52 (10.3%) have been screened for cervical cancer. Women who are educated (completed primary school and above) (AOR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.18-3.05), who have a history of the presence of sexually transmitted diseases (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI = 1.26-5.23), who have multiple sexual partners (AOR = 4.0; 95% CI = 1.86-8.66), and who knew methods of cervical cancer prevention (AOR = 4.3; 95% CI = 1.18-13.05) were significantly associated with high cervical cancer screening utilization. Conclusion The magnitude of cervical cancer screening utilization among women was very low. Educational status, history of multiple sexual partners, history of sexually transmitted diseases, and knowing methods of prevention were significant factors of high cervical cancer screening utilization. Recommendation. It is very crucial to implement an appropriate awareness creation method. Additionally, the STI clinic should be linked to the cervical cancer screening service to increase the knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and the utilization of cervical cancer screening.

Wealth-related inequalities of women\u2019s knowledge of cervical cancer screening and service utilisation in 18 resource-constrained countries: evidence from a pooled decomposition analysis

IntroductionResource-constrained countries (RCCs) have the highest burden of cervical cancer (CC) in the world. Nonetheless, although CC can be prevented through screening for precancerous lesions, only a small proportion of women utilise screening services in RCCs. The objective of this study was to examine the magnitude of inequalities of women’s knowledge and utilisation of cervical cancer screening (CCS) services in RCCs.MethodsA total of 1,802,413 sample observations from 18 RCC’s latest national-level Demographic and Health Surveys (2008 to 2017–18) were analysed to assess wealth-related inequalities in terms of women’s knowledge and utilisation of CCS services. Regression-based decomposition analyses were applied in order to compute the contribution to the inequality disparities of the explanatory variables for women’s knowledge and utilisation of CCS services.ResultsOverall, approximately 37% of women had knowledge regarding CCS services, of which, 25% belonged to the poorest quintile and approximately 49% from the richest. Twenty-nine percent of women utilised CCS services, ranging from 11% in Tajikistan, 15% in Cote d’Ivoire, 17% in Tanzania, 19% in Zimbabwe and 20% in Kenya to 96% in Colombia. Decomposition analyses determined that factors that reduced inequalities in women’s knowledge of CCS services were male-headed households (− 2.24%; 95% CI: − 3.10%, − 1.59%; P < 0.01), currently experiencing amenorrhea (− 1.37%; 95% CI: − 2.37%, − 1.05%; P < 0.05), having no problems accessing medical assistance (− 10.00%; 95% CI: − 12.65%, − 4.89%; P < 0.05), being insured (− 6.94%; 95% CI: − 9.58%, − 4.29%; P < 0.01) and having an urban place of residence (− 9.76%; 95% CI: − 12.59%, − 5.69%; P < 0.01). Similarly, factors that diminished inequality in the utilisation of CCS services were being married (− 8.23%;95% CI: − 12.46%, − 5.80%; P < 0.01), being unemployed (− 14.16%; 95% CI: − 19.23%, − 8.47%; P < 0.01) and living in urban communities (− 9.76%; 95% CI: − 15.62%, − 5.80%; P < 0.01).ConclusionsWomen’s knowledge and utilisation of CCS services in RCCs are unequally distributed. Significant inequalities were identified among socioeconomically deprived women in the majority of countries. There is an urgent need for culturally appropriate community-based awareness and access programs to improve the uptake of CCS services in RCCs.

Cervical Cancer Screening Utilization and Associated Factors Among Women Aged 30 to 49 Years in Dire Dawa, Eastern Ethiopia.

Background:Cervical cancer is a public health problem and one of the leading causes of death in women worldwide. In Ethiopia, the government expands cervical cancer screening centers and recommends services to age-eligible and high-risk groups of women. However, evidence indicates that the utilization of services among eligible and high-risk women in the country has remained very low, and data are scarce in Dire Dawa. Therefore, this study aimed to assess cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among women aged 30 to 49 years in Dire Dawa, eastern Ethiopia.Methods:A facility-based cross-sectional study was undertaken in Dire Dawa from February 01 to March 01, 2017. Only two facilities provided the screening service in Dire Dawa Administration. Six- hundred and one women aged 30 to 49 years were selected using a systematic sampling method. Data were collected using a pretested face-to-face interview administered questionnaire. Data were entered using EpiData 3.1, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science Version 21. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with cervical cancer screening utilization. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used, and a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:In this study, the magnitude of cervical cancer screening service utilization was 4.0% (95% CI: 2.5-5.7). The factors associated with cervical cancer screening service utilization were older age (AOR = 4.2; 95% CI:1.3-13.8), attending private health facilities (AOR = 8.9; 95% CI: 2.8-28.0), being employed (AOR = 3.3; 95% CI: 1.3-8.8), visiting the gynecology departments (AOR = 3.8; 95% CI: 1.5-9.8), being knowledgeable (AOR = 4.8; 95% CI: 1.5-15.5), being counseled by health professionals (AOR = 4.1; 95% CI: 1.5-11.3), and user’s of family planning (AOR = 4.9; 95% CI: 1.2-20.0).Conclusion:The magnitude of cervical cancer screening utilization was very low. Hence, to improve the screening service utilization of cervical cancer, a campaign on community awareness, strengthening service linkage among departments, expansion of the centers for cervical cancer screening, and promotion of family planning method utilization are recommended.

Predictors of cervical cancer screening service utilization among commercial sex workers in Northwest Ethiopia: a case-control study

BackgroundAlthough an opportunistic approach of cervical cancer screening strategy had been implemented in Ethiopia, utilization of screening services among women is still low, accounted < 1%. We hypothesize that commercial sex women in Ethiopia faced a number of obstacles in order to access screening services. Identifying the predictors influencing utilizations of the screening services is an essential effort to tailor screening program towards increasing the utilization.MethodsAn unmatched case-control study was implemented with a total sample size of 230 (46 cases and 184 controls). The study was conducted among commercial sex workers who attended confidential clinic opened for sex workers. Simple random sampling was employed. After the data were checked for completeness, consistency and accuracy, it was entered in to Epi nfo version 7 then exported to SPSS for further statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the profile of study participants. Logistic regression was employed to identify the predictors of cervical cancer screening uptake. P < 0.05 was computed to determine the level of statistical significance.ResultsCervical cancer screening utilization was associated with providers’ recommendation (AOR = 6.8; 95% CI: 2.3, 9.7), history of sexually transmitted infection (AOR = 6.9; 95% CI: 1.29, 7.2), frequency of facility visit (AOR = 4.8; 95% CI: 1.97, 11.8) and history of vaginal examination (AOR = 0.21; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.68).ConclusionsThe level of cervical cancer screening service utilization was higher among women with history of STI, frequency of facility visit and providers’ recommendation. The level of cervical cancer screening service utilization was lower in women with previous vaginal examination.

Cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among HIV positive women attending adult ART clinic in public health facilities, Hawassa town, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundIn Ethiopia, cervical cancer is a public health concern, as it is the second most cause of cancer deaths among reproductive age women and it affects the country’s most vulnerable groups like; rural, poor, and HIV-positive women. Despite the strong evidence that cervical cancer screening results in decreased mortality from this disease, its utilization remains low.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2 to April 1/2019 to assess the level and factors affecting utilization of cervical cancer screening among HIV positive women in Hawassa town. Quantitative data collection methods were used. Data were gathered using a structured and pretested questionnaire. Epi-Info version 7 and SPSS version 23 were used for data entry and analysis respectively. Statistically significant association of variables was determined based on Adjusted Odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and p-value of ≤0.05.ResultsOf the 342 women interviewed, 40.1% (95% CI: 35.00, 45.33%) of them were screened. Having a post primary education (AOR = 5.1, 95% CI: 1.8, 14.5), less than 500 cell/mm3 CD4 count (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.2, 5.9); duration since HIV diagnosis (AOR = 4.2, 95% CI: 2.1, 8.5), partner support (AOR = 4.7, 95% CI: 2.3, 9.4), having knowledge about risk factors (AOR = 2.9 (95% CI: 1.2, 6.9) and having favorable attitude towards cervical cancer and its screening (AOR = 3.7 (95% CI: 1.8, 7.5) were associated with cervical cancer screening utilization.ConclusionsThe study revealed utilization of cervical cancer screening service was low among HIV positive women. Educational status, duration of HIV diagnosis, partner support, knowledge status about risk factor, CD4 count and attitude towards cervical cancer and its screening were associated with cervical cancer screening utilization. Health care workers need to provide intensive counseling services for all ART care attendants to increase utilization.

Cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among age-eligible women in Jimma town using health belief model, South West Ethiopia

BackgroundCervical cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer affecting the lives of women. It causes hundreds of thousands of death among women annually worldwide. When a woman is screened for cervical cancer at least once in her life between the ages of 30 and 40, the risk of getting cervical cancer can be decreased by 25–36%. Despite this advantage, the coverage of cervical cancer screening is limited in low and middle-income countries including Ethiopia.ObjectiveTo assess cervical cancer screening service utilization and associated factors among age-eligible women in Jimma town, South West Ethiopia, 2017.MethodsCommunity based cross-sectional study was used. Seven hundred thirty-seven women were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected using a structured interview administered questionnaire. Data were collected on socio-demographic, reproductive factors, knowledge of cervical cancer as well as constructs of Health belief model and practice related variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed, and variables with a p-value of less than 0.05 in the multivariable analysis were taken as statistically significant predictors of cervical cancer screening service utilization.ResultsOf the 737 women, only 15.5% were screened for cervical cancer. The independent predictors of cervical cancer screening utilization were: being government employee [AOR = 3.00, 95% CI: 1.49–6.01], knowing someone who has ever screened [AOR = 3.61, 95% CI: 2.07–6.29], having history of gynecologic examination for any reason (having previous examination that expose women genitalia for physician like examination during child birth, abortion procedure and examination for STI) [AOR =2.84, 95% CI: 1.48–5.45], not preferring gender of physician for gynecological examination [AOR = 3.57, 95% CI: 1.98–6.45], getting advice from health care providers [AOR = 4.45, 95% CI: 2.57–7.70], having good knowledge of cervical cancer screening [AOR = 3.46, 95% CI: 1.47–8.21] and having perceived susceptible for cervical cancer [AOR = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.64–5.56].ConclusionsThe utilization of cervical cancer screening services was low in Jimma town. Strengthening the screening service is important through raising the awareness of the community towards cervical cancer and screening services.

Utilization of Cervical Carcinoma Screening Service and Associated Factors among Currently Married Women in Arba Minch Town, Southern Ethiopia

Background: Cervical cancer is major public health problem worldwide which worsened in the developing world including Sub-Saharan Africa. Cervical cancer screening has been consistently shown to be effective in reducing the incidence rate and mortality from cervical cancer. But very few of eligible women undergo cervical cancer screening. The aim of this study was assess the level of utilization of screening service for cervical cancer among currently married women in Arba Minch Town. Methods: A community based cross sectional study design was conducted among randomly selected 660 currently married women from February to March, 2015 by using interviewer administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS Version 21. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the status of study population and multi-variable logistic regression was used to see predictors of screening service utilization. Result: The study indicated that only 38 (5.9%) of the respondents get screened. The most common reason for not utilizing the service was being healthy (60.02%). Age of mother greater than 30 years, perceived severity to cervical cancer, parity of more than 5 children and average monthly income of greater than 1170 ETB were significantly associated with cervical cancer screening service utilization. Conclusion: Only few of the respondents get screened. Therefore, there is a need for creating awareness and intensifying health education provision on cervical cancer screening in the town and need to influence perceptions by targeting the women.
