The standardization of cerium(IV) solutions against arsenic trioxide is critically reviewed. If a gravimetric titration with spectrophotometric determination of the excess of cerium(IV) is used, an accuracy of 0.01% can be achieved. The directional difference ( ca. 0.03%) in direct and reverse titrations observed in the standardization ofcerium(IV) solutions against arsenic trioxide is caused by a reaction between water and cerium(IV). The use of iodide ion as catalyst, instead of osmium tetroxide, is described.
