The Effects of Post-Exercise Cold Water Immersion on Neuromuscular Control of Knee.

To date, most studies examined the effects of cold water immersion (CWI) on neuromuscular control following exercise solely on measuring proprioception, no study explores changes in the brain and muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of CWI following exercise on knee neuromuscular control capacity, and physiological and perceptual responses. In a crossover control design, fifteen participants performed an exhaustion exercise. Subsequently, they underwent a 10 min recovery intervention, either in the form of passively seated rest (CON) or CWI at 15 °C. The knee proprioception, oxygenated cerebral hemoglobin concentrations (Δ[HbO]), and muscle activation during the proprioception test, physiological and perceptual responses were measured. CWI did not have a significant effect on proprioception at the post-intervention but attenuated the reductions in Δ[HbO] in the primary sensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex (p < 0.05). The root mean square of vastus medialis was higher in the CWI compared to the CON. CWI effectively reduced core temperature and mean skin temperature and improved the rating of perceived exertion and thermal sensation. These results indicated that 10 min of CWI at 15 °C post-exercise had no negative effect on the neuromuscular control of the knee joint but could improve subjective perception and decrease body temperature.

Effects of rhythmic visual cues on cortical activation and functional connectivity features during stepping: an fNIRS study.

Rhythmic visual cues (RVCs) may influence gait initiation by modulating cognition resources. However, it is unknown how RVCs modulate cognitive resources allocation during gait movements. This study focused on investigating the effects of RVCs on cortical hemodynamic response features during stepping to evaluate the changes of cognitive resources. We recorded cerebral hemoglobin concentration changes of 14 channels in 17 healthy subjects using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during stepping tasks under exposure to RVCs and non-rhythmic visual cues (NRVCs). We reported mean oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) concentration changes, β-values, and functional connectivity (FC) between channels. The results showed that, the RVC conditions revealed lower HbO responses compared to the NRVC conditions during the preparation and early stepping. Correspondingly, the β-values reflected that RVCs elicited lower hemodynamic responses than NRVCs, and there was a decreasing trend in stimulus-evoked cortical activation as the task progressed. However, the FC between channels were stronger under RVCs than under NRVCs during the stepping progress, and there were more significant differences in FC during the early stepping. In conclusion, there were lower cognitive demand and stronger FC under RVC conditions than NRVC conditions, which indicated higher efficiency of cognitive resources allocation during stepping tasks. This study may provide a new insight for further understanding the mechanism on how RVCs alleviate freezing of gait.

Time course of cerebral oxygenation and cerebrovascular reactivity in Kyrgyz highlanders. A five-year prospective cohort study.

Introduction: This prospective cohort study assessed the effects of chronic hypoxaemia due to high-altitude residency on the cerebral tissue oxygenation (CTO) and cerebrovascular reactivity. Methods: Highlanders, born, raised, and currently living above 2,500m, without cardiopulmonary disease, participated in a prospective cohort study from 2012 until 2017. The measurements were performed at 3,250m. After 20min of rest in supine position while breathing ambient air (FiO2 0.21) or oxygen (FiO2 1.0) in random order, guided hyperventilation followed under the corresponding gas mixture. Finger pulse oximetry (SpO2) and cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy assessing CTO and change in cerebral haemoglobin concentration (cHb), a surrogate of cerebral blood volume changes and cerebrovascular reactivity, were applied. Arterial blood gases were obtained during ambient air breathing. Results: Fifty three highlanders, aged 50 ± 2years, participated in 2017 and 2012. While breathing air in 2017 vs. 2012, PaO2 was reduced, mean ± SE, 7.40 ± 0.13 vs. 7.84 ± 0.13kPa; heart rate was increased 77 ± 1 vs. 70 ± 1bpm (p < 0.05) but CTO remained unchanged, 67.2% ± 0.7% vs. 67.4% ± 0.7%. With oxygen, SpO2 and CTO increased similarly in 2017 and 2012, by a mean (95% CI) of 8.3% (7.5-9.1) vs. 8.5% (7.7-9.3) in SpO2, and 5.5% (4.1-7.0) vs. 4.5% (3.0-6.0) in CTO, respectively. Hyperventilation resulted in less reduction of cHb in 2017 vs. 2012, mean difference (95% CI) in change with air 2.0 U/L (0.3-3.6); with oxygen, 2.1 U/L (0.5-3.7). Conclusion: Within 5years, CTO in highlanders was preserved despite a decreased PaO2. As this was associated with a reduced response of cerebral blood volume to hypocapnia, adaptation of cerebrovascular reactivity might have occurred.

Prefrontal NIRS signal is unaffected by forehead Doppler flux during incremental cycling exercise.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is used to measure tissue concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (O2 Hb) and deoxyhemoglobin (HHb). In the context of exercise, NIRS confers a higher signal-to-noise ratio than other neuroimaging techniques. However, part of the signal may be influenced by thermoregulatory hyperemia in the superficial cutaneous capillaries of the forehead. The degree to which NIRS signals during exercise reflect cerebral or extracerebral hemodynamic changes is a continuing source of controversy. However, the influence of skin blood flow may be attenuated depending on the NIRS technique (e.g., frequency domain machines with maximal optode separation distances >3.5 cm). The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in forehead skin blood flow and cerebral hemoglobin concentration during incremental exercise versus direct vasodilation of the forehead skin induced by gradual local heating. Thirty participants (12 females, 18 males; age: 20.8 ± 3.2 years; body mass index: 23.8 ± 3.7 kg·m-2 ) participated in the study. Forehead skin blood flow was quantified laser Doppler flux and absolute concentrations of cerebral O2 Hb and HHb were measured by NIRS. Local heating significantly increased the Doppler flux signal across time and these changes were significantly correlated with skin temperature. During incremental exercise, skin temperature, Doppler flux, O2 Hband HHb increased however, the only significant change that was consistently correlated with Doppler flux was skin temperature. Therefore, a significant change in forehead skin blood flow may not significantly the NIRS hemoglobin data, depending on the type of NIRS device used.

Dynamic Alterations in Cerebral Hemodynamics Measured by Portable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Orthostatic Hypotension and Intolerance.

We aimed to evaluate dynamic alterations in cerebral total hemoglobin concentration (HbT) in individuals with orthostatic hypotension (OH) and orthostatic intolerance (OI) symptoms using a portable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system. Participants comprised 238 individuals (mean age, 47.9 years) without a history of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, or cerebrovascular diseases, including those with unexplained OI symptoms and healthy volunteers. Participants were categorized by the presence of OH based on the supine-to-stand blood pressure (BP) drop and OI symptoms using on OH questionnaires: classic OH (OH-BP), OH symptoms alone (OH-Sx), and control groups. Random case-control matching sets were constructed, resulting in 16 OH-BP and 69 OH-Sx-control sets. The time-derivative of HbT change in the prefrontal cortex during the squat-to-stand maneuver was measured using a portable NIRS system. There were no differences in demographics, baseline BP, and heart rate among matched sets. The peak time of maximum slope variation in HbT change, indicating the recovery rate and speed of cerebral blood volume (CBV) change, was significantly longer in OH-Sx and OH-BP groups than in the control group under transition to a standing position after squatting. In the OH-BP subgrouping, the peak time of maximum slope variation in HbT change was significantly longer only in OH-BP with OI symptoms, but did not differ between OH-BP without OI symptoms and controls. Our results suggest that OH and OI symptoms are associated with dynamic alterations in cerebral HbT. Regardless of the severity of the postural BP drop, OI symptoms are associated with prolonged CBV recovery.

Intra‐oral gingival massage activates human cerebral prefrontal cortex and enhances cognitive performance

AbstractAimOral care is associated with improved quality of life and changing cognitive performance in daily life. The association of trigeminal nerve‐stimulatory oral care methods, such as tooth brushing and intra‐oral cold stimuli, with cerebral activation has been studied. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of intra‐oral gingival massage on the cerebral prefrontal cortex (PFC) region activation and the changes in cognitive performance.MethodsA total of 18 men participated in this study. Near‐infrared spectroscopy was used to acquire data on the cerebral hemoglobin concentrations. Cognitive function was determined using the Stroop cognitive test performed with and without intra‐oral gingival massage stimulus.ResultsParticipants who performed intra‐oral gingival massage showed significantly increased blood flow in the cerebral PFC region, including the left dorsolateral PFC (DL‐PFC) region, compared with those who mimicked the movements of the gingival massage (control group) (p = 0.0104 by Wilcoxon signed rank method). Furthermore, gingival massage showed a significant association with increased cognitive performance (p &lt; 0.0001 by Wilcoxon signed rank method) that coincided with the enhanced left DL‐PFC region activation (p = 0.039 by Fisher's exact probability test).ConclusionIntra‐oral gingival massage activated the cerebral PFC regions correlating with enhanced cognitive performance, suggesting that gingival massage may help improve cognitive performance.

Age-related changes in diffuse optical tomography sensitivity profiles from childhood to adulthood.

.Significance: Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) uses near-infrared light spectroscopy to measure changes in cerebral hemoglobin concentration. Anatomical interpretations of the brain location that generates the hemodynamic signal require accurate descriptions of the DOT sensitivity to the underlying cortex. DOT sensitivity profiles are different in infants compared with adults. However, the descriptions of DOT sensitivity profiles from early childhood to adulthood are lacking despite the continuous head and brain development.Aim: We aim to investigate age-related differences in DOT sensitivity profiles in individuals aged from 2 to 34 years with narrow age ranges of 0.5 or 1 year.Approach: We implemented existing photon migration simulation methods and computed source–detector channel DOT sensitivity using age-appropriate, realistic head models.Results: DOT sensitivity profiles change systematically as a function of source–detector separation distance for all age groups. Children displayed distinctive DOT sensitivity profiles compared to older individuals, and the differences were enhanced at larger separation distances.Conclusions: The findings have important implications for the design of source–detector placement and image reconstruction. Age-appropriate realistic head models should be used to provide anatomical guidance for standalone DOT data. Using age-inappropriate head models will have more negative impacts on estimation accuracy in younger children.

Low frequency power in cerebral blood flow is a biomarker of neurologic injury in the acute period after cardiac arrest

AimCardiac arrest often results in severe neurologic injury. Improving care for these patients is difficult as few noninvasive biomarkers exist that allow physicians to monitor neurologic health. The amount of low-frequency power (LFP, 0.01–0.1 Hz) in cerebral haemodynamics has been used in functional magnetic resonance imaging as a marker of neuronal activity. Our hypothesis was that increased LFP in cerebral blood flow (CBF) would be correlated with improvements in invasive measures of neurologic health. MethodsWe adapted the use of LFP for to monitoring of CBF with diffuse correlation spectroscopy. We asked whether LFP (or other optical biomarkers) correlated with invasive microdialysis biomarkers (lactate-pyruvate ratio – LPR – and glycerol concentration) of neuronal injury in the 4 h after return of spontaneous circulation in a swine model of paediatric cardiac arrest (Sus scrofa domestica, 8–11 kg, 51% female). Associations were tested using a mixed linear effects model. ResultsWe found that higher LFP was associated with higher LPR and higher glycerol concentration. No other biomarkers were associated with LPR; cerebral haemoglobin concentration, oxygen extraction fraction, and one EEG metric were associated with glycerol concentration. ConclusionContrary to expectations, higher LFP in CBF was correlated with worse invasive biomarkers. Higher LFP may represent higher neurologic activity, or disruptions in neurovascular coupling. Either effect may be harmful in the acute period after cardiac arrest. Thus, these results suggest our methodology holds promise for development of new, clinically relevant biomarkers than can guide resuscitation and post-resuscitation care.Institutional protocol number: 19-001327.

Estimation of Cerebral Hemodynamics and Oxygenation During Various Intensities of Rowing Exercise: An NIRS Study.

PurposeThis study aimed to investigate changes in cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation at moderate, heavy, maximal and supramaximal intensities of rowing exercise. It also examined whether these changes reflect alterations in sensation of effort and mood. We also aimed to examine the effects of peak pulmonary oxygen consumption (O2peak) on cerebral oxygenation.MethodsEleven rowers, consisting out of six athletes and five recreational rowers [two female; age, 27 ± 9 years; height, 171 ± 7 cm, body mass, 67 ± 9 kg; O2peak, 53.5 ± 6.5 mL min–1 kg–1] rowed a 13-min session separated by 10 and 3 min, at 70 (Ex70%) and 80% of O2peak (Ex80%), respectively, on a rowing ergometer, followed by three sessions of 1-min supramaximal exercise (ExSp). After a warm-up at 60% of O2peak (ExM), seven male rowers performed a 2,000 m all-out test (Ex2000). Cardiovascular and respiratory variables were measured. Cerebral oxygenation was investigated by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) to measure cerebral hemoglobin oxygen saturation (ScO2) and total hemoglobin concentration ([HbT]) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) quantitatively. We estimated the relative changes from rest in cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen (rCMRO2) using TRS at all intensities. During Ex70% and Ex80%, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were monitored, and alteration of the subject’s mood was evaluated using a questionnaire of Positive-and-Negative-Affect-Schedule after Ex70% and Ex80%.ResultsWhen exercise intensity changed from Ex70% to Ex80%, the sense of effort increased while ScO2 decreased. [HbT] remained unchanged. After Ex70% and Ex80%, a negative mood state was less prominent compared to rest and was accompanied by increases in both ScO2 and [HbT]. At termination of Ex2000, ScO2 decreased by 23% compared to rest. Changes in ScO2 correlated with O2peak only during Ex2000 (r = −0.86; p = 0.01). rCMRO2 did not decrease at any intensities.ConclusionOur results suggest that alterations in the sense of effort are associated with oxygenation in the PFC, while positive changes in mood status are associated with cerebral perfusion and oxygen metabolism estimated by TRS. At exhaustion, the cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen is maintained despite a decrease in ScO2.

DevfOLD: a toolbox for designing age-specific fNIRS channel placement.

.Significance: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive technique that uses scalp-placed sensors to measure cerebral hemoglobin concentration. Commercial NIRS instruments do not allow for whole-head coverage and do not intrinsically indicate which brain areas generate the NIRS signal. Hence, the challenge is to design source–detector channel arrangement that maximizes sensitivity to a given brain region of interest (ROI). Existing methods for optimizing channel placement design have been developed using adult head models. Thus, they have limited utility for developmental research.Aim: We aim to build an application from an existing toolbox (fOLD) that guides NIRS channel configuration based on age group, stereotaxic atlas, and ROI (devfOLD).Approach: The devfOLD provides NIRS channel-to-ROI specificity computed using photon propagation simulation with realistic head models from infant, child, and adult age groups.Results: Cortical locations and user-specified specificity cut-off values influence the between-age consistency and differences in the ROI-to-channel correspondence among the example infant and adult age groups.Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of incorporating age-specific head models for optimizing NIRS channel configurations. The devfOLD toolbox is publicly shared and compatible with multiple operating systems.

Effective method of monitoring cerebral tissue oxygen saturation in cardiac surgery patients by combined use of tNIRS-1 and bispectral index

To continuously and noninvasively monitor the cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) and hemoglobin concentration (gasHb) in cardiac surgery patients, a method combining the use of a cerebral tissue oximeter using near infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (tNIRS-1) and the bispectral index (BIS) was developed in this study. Moreover, the correlation between the estimated hemoglobin concentration (estHb), measured via tNIRS-1, and the hemoglobin concentration (gasHb), analyzed using a blood gas analyzer, were compared. The relationship between the BIS and gasHb was also examined. Through the comparison of BIS and StO2 (r1), and estHb and gasHb (r2), the correlation between the two was clarified with maximum r1 and r2 values of 0.617 and 0.946, respectively. The relationship between BIS and gasHb (r3), showed that there was a favorable correlation with a maximum r3 value of 0.969. There was also a continuous correlation between BIS and StO2 in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. In addition, a strong correlation was found between estHb and gasHb, and between BIS and gasHb. It was therefore concluded that the combined use of BIS and tNIRS-1 is useful to evaluate cerebral hypoxia, allowing for quick response to cerebral hypoxia and reduction of hemoglobin concentration during the operation.

Investigating developmental changes in scalp-to-cortex correspondence using diffuse optical tomography sensitivity in infancy.

.Significance: Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) uses near-infrared light spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure changes in cerebral hemoglobin concentration. Anatomical interpretations of NIRS data require accurate descriptions of the cranio-cerebral relations and DOT sensitivity to the underlying cortical structures. Such information is limited for pediatric populations because they undergo rapid head and brain development.Aim: We aim to investigate age-related differences in scalp-to-cortex distance and mapping between scalp locations and cortical regions of interest (ROIs) among infants (2 weeks to 24 months with narrow age bins), children (4 and 12 years), and adults (20 to 24 years).Approach: We used spatial scalp projection and photon propagation simulation methods with age-matched realistic head models based on MRIs.Results: There were age-group differences in the scalp-to-cortex distances in infancy. The developmental increase was magnified in children and adults. There were systematic age-related differences in the probabilistic mappings between scalp locations and cortical ROIs.Conclusions: Our findings have important implications in the design of sensor placement and making anatomical interpretations in NIRS and fNIRS research. Age-appropriate, realistic head models should be used to provide anatomical guidance for standalone DOT data in infants.

Anatomical interpretations of the location that generates the hemodynamic signal requires accurate descriptions of diffuse optical tomography sensitivity to the underlying cortical structures. Such information is limited for pediatric populations because they undergo rapid head and brain development. The present study used photon propagation simulation methods to examine diffuse optical tomography sensitivity profiles in realistic head models among infants ranging from 2 weeks to 24 months with narrow age bins, children (4 and 12 years) and adults (20 to 24 years). The sensitivity profiles changed systematically with the source-detector separation distance. The peak of the sensitivity function in the head was largest at the smallest separation distance and decreased as separation distance increased. The fluence value dissipated more quickly with sampling depth at the shorter source-detector separations than the longer separation distances. There were age-related differences in the shape and variance of sensitivity profiles across a wide range of source-detector separation distances. Our findings have important implications in the design of sensor placement and diffuse optical tomography image reconstruction in (functional) near-infrared light spectroscopy research. Age-appropriate realistic head models should be used to provide anatomical guidance for standalone near-infrared light spectroscopy data in infants.

Changes of cerebral oxygenation indices measured by near infrared time-resolved spectroscopy during spinal anesthesia for cesarean section: Simultaneous measurement with cerebral blood flow.

To measure the changes in cerebral oxygenation indices by near infrared time-resolved spectroscopy and the cerebral blood flow simultaneously after spinal anesthesia for cesarean section. This prospective observational study was conducted for 25 pregnant women scheduled for elective cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. During a period of 15 min after spinal anesthesia, cerebral oxygenation (ScO2 ), and the total cerebral hemoglobin concentration (tHb) were measured using near infrared time-resolved spectroscopy and mean cerebral blood flow velocity (Vm) was measured using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. Next, in the women who had nausea during the observed period, we compared these values when nausea was detected with those when it was not. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) decreased to around 60 mmHg (by 25% compared to the control) 6min after spinal anesthesia. Compared to the control, ScO2 decreased by about 3% after 6min and then gradually increased. The tHb, which reflects cerebral blood volume started to decrease just after spinal anesthesia and this continued until 12 min (the decrease was about 12%). Vm decreased by about 7%. In the 14 women who had nausea, MAP, Vm, and ScO2 values when nausea was detected were significantly lower than when it was not. The changes in cerebral hemodynamics may be small after spinal anesthesia in ordinary cesarean section compared to the reduction of systemic arterial blood pressure. There might be greater decreases in cerebral blood flow and oxygenation when nausea occurred in the pregnant women who experienced it after spinal anesthesia.

Minute changes of cerebral parenchymal non-contrast computed tomography attenuation reflect cerebral volume alterations of blood.

Non-infarcted acute cerebral ischaemic areas appear hypo-attenuated on non-contrast narrow-window computed tomography images. We aimed to determine the mechanism underlying minute computed tomography hypo-attenuation and visualise these attenuation changes on non-contrast computed tomography images. The cerebral parenchyma was defined by pixels with attenuation of 20-50 Hounsfield units. We calculated the mean cerebral parenchymal attenuation in non-contrast computed tomography images. We analysed the correlation of complete blood counts with corresponding mean cerebral parenchymal attenuation values using linear regression analysis. Moreover, we developed an image processing method that involved pixel colorisation based on the noise-reduced attenuation value for minute cerebral parenchymal attenuation visualisation. Haemoglobin, haematocrit and red blood cell counts positively correlated with mean cerebral parenchymal attenuation values. The cerebral haematocrit is correlated with the blood haematocrit; therefore, cerebral parenchymal attenuation correlated linearly with cerebral haemoglobin concentration. Haemoglobin contents in a pixel partially determine the X-ray absorption dose and attenuation value. Pixel haemoglobin contents are determined by the cerebral volume of blood in a pixel. Image processed computed tomography images reflected cerebral volume of blood and showed the same alterations with regional cerebral blood volume maps of perfusion computed tomography. Cerebral parenchymal attenuation correlated with cerebral haemoglobin concentration and cerebral volume of blood. Infarcted cerebral parenchyma shows about 5 Hounsfield units gray matter attenuation decrease. Attenuation decrease by less than 5 Hounsfield units means decreased cerebral volume of blood, indicating a reversible functional change. One cannot recognise minute hypo-attenuation (<5 Hounsfield units) in routine computed tomography images. However, it can be visualised through an image processing method on non-contrast computed tomography images. It may detect pre-infarction cerebral volume of blood and regional cerebral blood volume alterations.

Alterations in cerebral and cardiac mitochondrial function in a porcine model of acute carbon monoxide poisoning

Objectives The purpose of this study is the development of a porcine model of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning to investigate alterations in brain and heart mitochondrial function. Design Two group large animal model of CO poisoning. Setting Laboratory. Subjects Ten swine were divided into two groups: Control (n = 4) and CO (n = 6). Interventions Administration of a low dose of CO at 200 ppm to the CO group over 90 min followed by 30 min of re-oxygenation at room air. The Control group received room air for 120 min. Measurements Non-invasive optical monitoring was used to measure cerebral blood flow and oxygenation. Cerebral microdialysis was performed to obtain semi real time measurements of cerebral metabolic status. At the end of the exposure, both fresh brain (cortical and hippocampal tissue) and heart (apical tissue) were immediately harvested to measure mitochondrial respiration and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and blood was collected to assess plasma cytokine concentrations. Main results Animals in the CO group showed significantly decreased Complex IV-linked mitochondrial respiration in hippocampal and apical heart tissue but not cortical tissue. There also was a significant increase in mitochondrial ROS generation across all measured tissue types. The CO group showed a significantly higher cerebral lactate-to-pyruvate ratio. Both IL-8 and TNFα were significantly increased in the CO group compared with the Control group obtained from plasma. While not significant there was a trend to an increase in optically measured cerebral blood flow and hemoglobin concentration in the CO group. Conclusions Low-dose CO poisoning is associated with early mitochondrial disruption prior to an observable phenotype highlighting the important role of mitochondrial function in the pathology of CO poisoning. This may represent an important intervenable pathway for therapy and intervention.

The neuroscience interest for moral decision-making has recently increased. To investigate the processes underlying moral behavior, this research aimed to investigate neurophysiological and behavioral correlates of decision-making in moral contexts. Specifically, functional Near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) allowed to record oxygenated (O2Hb) and deoxygenated (HHb) cerebral hemoglobin concentrations during different moral conditions (professional fit, company fit, social fit) and offers types (fair, unfair, neutral). Moreover, individuals’ responses to offers types and reaction time (RTs) were considered. Specifically, from hemodynamic results emerged a difference in O2Hb and HHb activity according to moral conditions and offers types in different brain regions. In particular, O2Hb increase and a HHb decrease were observed in ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (VMPFC, DLPFC) for fair offers in professional fit condition and in superior temporal sulcus (STS) for unfair offers in social fit condition. Moreover, an increase of left O2Hb activity in professional fit condition and in right VMPFC for unfair offers in company fit condition was observed. In addition, from behavioral results, an RTs increase in company and social fit condition for fair and unfair offers emerged. This study, therefore, shows the behavioral and neurophysiological correlates of moral decision-making that guide moral behavior in different context, such as company one.

The Other-Race-Effect on Audiovisual Speech Integration in Infants: A NIRS Study.

Previous studies have revealed perceptual narrowing for the own-race-face in face discrimination, but this phenomenon is poorly understood in face and voice integration. We focused on infants’ brain responses to the McGurk effect to examine whether the other-race effect occurs in the activation patterns. In Experiment 1, we conducted fNIRS measurements to find the presence of a mapping of the McGurk effect in Japanese 8- to 9-month-old infants and to examine the difference between the activation patterns in response to own-race-face and other-race-face stimuli. We used two race-face conditions, own-race-face (East Asian) and other-race-face (Caucasian), each of which contained audiovisual-matched and McGurk-type stimuli. While the infants (N = 34) were observing each speech stimulus for each race, we measured cerebral hemoglobin concentrations in bilateral temporal brain regions. The results showed that in the own-race-face condition, audiovisual-matched stimuli induced the activation of the left temporal region, and the McGurk stimuli induced the activation of the bilateral temporal regions. No significant activations were found in the other-race-face condition. These results mean that the McGurk effect occurred only in the own-race-face condition. In Experiment 2, we used a familiarization/novelty preference procedure to confirm that the infants (N = 28) could perceive the McGurk effect in the own-race-face condition but not that of the other-race-face. The behavioral data supported the results of the fNIRS data, implying the presence of narrowing for the own-race face in the McGurk effect. These results suggest that narrowing of the McGurk effect may be involved in the development of relatively high-order processing, such as face-to-face communication with people surrounding the infant. We discuss the hypothesis that perceptual narrowing is a modality-general, pan-sensory process.

Near‐Infrared Spectroscopy Reveals Brain Hypoxia and Cerebrovascular Dysregulation in Primary Biliary Cholangitis

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune cholestatic liver disease linked to symptoms including fatigue and altered mood/cognition, indicating that chronic liver inflammation associated with PBC can impact brain function. We employed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a noninvasive neuroimaging technique, to determine whether patients with PBC exhibit reduced cerebral oxygen saturation (StO2 ) and altered patterns of microvascular cerebral blood perfusion and whether these alterations were associated with clinical phenotype. This observational case-control study was conducted at a tertiary hospital clinic (University of Calgary Liver Unit). Thirteen female patients with noncirrhotic PBC, seven female patients with cirrhotic PBC, and 11 healthy female controls were recruited by physician referral and word of mouth, respectively. NIRS was used to measure cerebral hemoglobin and oxygen saturation. A wavelet phase coherence method was used to estimate the coherent frequency coupling of temporal changes in cerebral hemodynamics. The PBC group demonstrated significantly reduced cerebral StO2 (P=0.01, d=0.84), indicating cerebral hypoxia, significantly increased cerebral deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration (P<0.01, d=0.86), and significantly reduced hemodynamic coherence in the low-frequency band (0.08-0.15 Hz) for oxygenated hemoglobin concentration (P=0.02, d=0.99) and total hemoglobin (tHb) concentration (P=0.02, d=0.50), indicating alterations in cerebrovascular activity. Complete biochemical response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy in early patients with PBC was associated with increased cerebral tHb concentration and decreased hemodynamic coherence. Using NIRS, patients with PBC were found to have hypoxia, increased cerebral hemoglobin concentration, and altered cerebrovascular activity, which were reversed in part in UDCA responders. In addition, symptoms and quality-of-life measures did not correlate with brain hypoxia or cerebrovascular dysregulation in patients with PBC.
