Brain and brawn in balance: Central processing speed and muscle torque development speed are independently associated with the ability to recover balance with feet-in-place

BackgroundStepping thresholds, i.e. the maximum perturbation one can withstand without taking a step, predict falls in older people. This ability requires fast central processing of sensory information followed by rapid execution of adequate motor responses, both of which are affected by age. However, there is limited evidence on their combined effect on stepping thresholds. Research questionAre cognitive and motor speeds important for stepping thresholds and do they interact, allowing for compensation? MethodsTwo-hundred forty-two people (mean age: 80 years, standard deviation 4; 110 women) underwent a series of waist-pulls of increasing magnitude to assess stepping thresholds in anterior, posterior and mediolateral directions. Cognitive function was assessed as simple hand reaction time and trail making test performance, and muscle function was assessed as isometric peak and rate of torque development of dominant leg muscles. Principal component analysis reduced these variables to four factors: peak muscle strength, muscle torque development speed (motor speed), executive function and central processing speed (cognitive speed). These factors were used in univariable and multivariable regression models to determine their association with stepping thresholds. ResultsFaster central processing speed (beta:2.69; 95 %CI:1.49–3.88) and faster muscle torque development speed (beta:2.60, 95 %CI:0.63–4.57) were associated with higher stepping thresholds. These associations remained in a multivariable model. No interaction was found between cognitive and motor speed on stepping thresholds (p = 0.602). SignificanceCentral processing speed and muscle torque development speed affect stepping thresholds independently from each other and may both be important age-related motor impairment targets for preventing falls in older people.

Sleep deprivation affects interference control: A diffusion model analysis.

Previous studies suggest that interference control may be unaffected by sleep deprivation based on the unchanged interference effects (reaction time [RT] differences between incongruent and congruent conditions), while ignoring the overall slower RTs after sleep deprivation. In the present study, we interpreted these results from a new angle using a variant of diffusion model, diffusion model for conflict tasks (DMC), and investigated whether and how interference control is affected by sleep deprivation. Mathematical derivations and model simulations showed that unchanged task-irrelevant information processing (i.e., unaffected interference control) may not lead to the observed unchanged interference effects when considering the overall slower RTs after sleep deprivation (due to either decreased drift rate of task-relevant information or increased decision boundary). Therefore, the unchanged interference effects do not necessarily indicate unchanged interference control. We then conducted a Simon task following one night of sleep deprivation or normal sleep, and fitted the DMC to the data. Experimental results showed that the Simon effect was reversed when most of the trials were incongruent, indicating that participants used learned spatially incompatible stimulus-response associations to predict responses. However, the Simon effects in both mean RTs and RT distributions were not significantly modulated by sleep deprivation. Model fits showed that the drift rate of task-relevant information decreased and the time-to-peak of task-irrelevant activation increased after sleep deprivation. These results suggest that central information processing was degraded after sleep loss, and most importantly, task-irrelevant activation increased after sleep deprivation as interference control was impaired. Altered parietal operculum cortex 2 functional connectivity in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo patients with residual dizziness: A resting-state fMRI study.

To investigate changes in functional connectivity (FC) focusing on parietal operculum cortex 2 (OP2) in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) patients with residual dizziness (RD) after successful canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). High-resolution three-dimensional T1 and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were performed on 55 healthy controls (HCs), 55 BPPV patients with RD, and 55 patients without RD after successful CRP. Seed-based (bilateral OP2) FC was calculated to investigate the changes in FC among the three groups. Additionally, we further explored the associations between abnormal FC and clinical symptoms. One-way analysis of covariance showed significant FC differences among the three groups. Post-hoc analysis showed that patients with RD exhibited decreased FC between left OP2 and regions of left angular gyrus (AG), thalamus, precuneus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and right cerebellum posterior lobe (CPL) in comparison with HCs. In addition, compared with patients without RD, patients with RD showed decreased FC between left OP2 and regions of left MFG, AG, middle temporal gyrus, and right CPL. Moreover, in patients with RD, the FC between left thalamus and OP2 was negatively correlated with duration of RD, and the FC between left AG and OP2 was negatively correlated with duration of BPPV. BPPV patients with RD showed reduced FC between brain regions involved in vestibular processing and spatial cognition; These results suggested that BPPV patients with RD might have diminished central processing of vestibular information and impaired spatial cognition.

Sensorimotor Dysfunction Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction- an Afferent Perspective: A Scoping Review.

Sensorimotor dysfunction is thought to occur following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury which may have implications on future reinjury risk. Dysfunction has been demonstrated within the efferent component of the sensorimotor system. However, no reviews have examined the two main components of the afferent system: the visual and somatosensory systems. This study aimed to report differences in function (central processing and local processing) within the (1) somatosensory and (2) visual systems between individuals following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and healthy controls (between-subject). The study also aimed to report differences in function within the two systems between the two limbs of an individual following ACLR (within-subject). Scoping review. A search was conducted in PubMed, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, Medline and Embase up until September 2021. Level I-IV studies assessing somatosensory and visual systems were included if they compared ACLR limbs to the uninjured contralateral limb (within-subject) or a healthy control limb (between-group). The function of somatosensory and visual systems was assessed across both central processing (processing of information in the central cortex) and local processing (all other assessments outside of central processing of information). Seventy studies were identified (52 somatosensory, 18 visual). Studies examining somatosensory central processing demonstrated significant differences; 66% of studies exhibited within-subject differences and 100% of the studies exhibited between-group differences. Studies examining local somatosensory processing had mixed findings; 40% of the 'joint position sense (JPS)' and 'threshold to detect motion (TTDM)' studies showed significant within-subject differences (JPS=0.8°-3.8° and TTDPM=0.2°-1.4°) and 42% demonstrated significant between-group differences (JPS=0.4°-5° and TTDPM=0.3°-2.8°). Eighty-three percent of visual central processing studies demonstrated significant dysfunction between-groups with no studies assessing within-subject differences. Fifty percent of the studies examining local visual processing demonstrated a significant between-group difference. Significant differences in central processing exist within somatosensory and visual systems following ACLR. There is mixed evidence regarding local somatosensory and visual processing. Increased compensation by the visual system and local visual processing dysfunction may occur in conjunction with somatosensory dysfunction.

Neuronal morphology and network properties modulate signal propagation in multi-layer feedforward network

The propagation and detection of weak signals play a vital role in the central nervous system's information processing. In this paper, a biophysical two-compartment model is adopted to investigate how the neuronal morphology and network properties modulate signal propagation in a multi-layer feedforward network (FFN). The numerical simulation results show that neurons with larger dendrites have higher firing rates and better responses to weak signals. Similarly, the output layer of FFN constructed by larger-dendrite neurons also exhibits better responses. A suitable chaotic current is necessary for the propagation of weak signals. Excessively strong or weak chaotic current leads to propagation failure. Sparse connection and weak synaptic strength optimize the responses of the output layer, which is consistent with real biological networks observed in the brain. It is found that weak signal propagation in FFN is highly correlated with the regulation of firing rate. Our results may provide novel insights into the modeling of complex networks and network function implementation.

Confirmatory Factorial Model of Searching for Information on the Internet During COVID-19

The pandemic directly impacted the educational system by moving from the traditional classroom to the electronic blackboard. In this transition process, an educational habitus emerged that consisted of facing the health, economic, social and educational crisis in a self-management of opportunities. In this sense, the search for information was a fundamental tool to promote self-knowledge. The objective of the present was to establish the reliability and validity of an instrument that measures the intention to search for information in digital networks with a non-probabilistic selection of 253 students from a public university in the State of Mexico. The results show the establishment of eight factors among which the intention to select information explained 21% of the total variance. Lines of research are noted regarding the construction of an agenda with central information processing axes and issues to anticipate discussion scenarios and shared agreements. In relation to the state of knowledge in which stigma prevails towards the proximity of people and distancing as well as confinement as central strategies of anti-COVID-19 policies, the establishment of an agenda focused on the self-management of knowledge is recommended. The management, production and transfer of knowledge is recommended from the self-management of resources and opportunities, as well as from the interrupted collaboration between the parties involved in the public education system.

Chapter 5 - Migraine headache pathophysiology

In both episodic and chronic migraine, headache is the most disabling symptom that requires medical care. The migraine headache is the most well-studied symptom of migraine pathophysiology. The trigeminal system and the central processing of sensory information transmitted by the trigeminal system are of considerable importance in the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Glutamate is the main neurotransmitter that drives activation of the ascending trigeminal and trigeminothalamic pathways. The neuropeptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) that is released by the trigeminal system, plays a crucial role in the neurobiology of headache. Peripheral and central sensitizations associated with trigeminal sensory processing are neurobiologic states that contribute to both the development of headache during a migraine attack and the maintenance of chronic migraine.

Evolution of the visual system in ray-finned fishes.

The vertebrate eye allows to capture an enormous amount of detail about the surrounding world which can only be exploited with sophisticated central information processing. Furthermore, vision is an active process due to head and eye movements that enables the animal to change the gaze and actively select objects to investigate in detail. The entire system requires a coordinated coevolution of its parts to work properly. Ray-finned fishes offer a unique opportunity to study the evolution of the visual system due to the high diversity in all of its parts. Here, we are bringing together information on retinal specializations (fovea), central visual centers (brain morphology studies), and eye movements in a large number of ray-finned fishes in a cladistic framework. The nucleus glomerulosus-inferior lobe system is well developed only in Acanthopterygii. A fovea, independent eye movements, and an enlargement of the nucleus glomerulosus-inferior lobe system coevolved at least five times independently within Acanthopterygii. This suggests that the nucleus glomerulosus-inferior lobe system is involved in advanced object recognition which is especially well developed in association with a fovea and independent eye movements. None of the non-Acanthopterygii have a fovea (except for some deep sea fish) or independent eye movements and they also lack important parts of the glomerulosus-inferior lobe system. This suggests that structures for advanced visual object recognition evolved within ray-finned fishes independent of the ones in tetrapods and non-ray-finned fishes as a result of a coevolution of retinal, central, and oculomotor structures.

Monoallelic loss of the F-actin-binding protein radixin facilitates startle reactivity and pre-pulse inhibition in mice.

Hearing impairment is one of the most common disorders with a global burden and increasing prevalence in an ever-aging population. Previous research has largely focused on peripheral sensory perception, while the brain circuits of auditory processing and integration remain poorly understood. Mutations in the rdx gene, encoding the F-actin binding protein radixin (Rdx), can induce hearing loss in human patients and homozygous depletion of Rdx causes deafness in mice. However, the precise physiological function of Rdx in hearing and auditory information processing is still ill-defined. Here, we investigated consequences of rdx monoallelic loss in the mouse. Unlike the homozygous (-/-) rdx knockout, which is characterized by the degeneration of actin-based stereocilia and subsequent hearing loss, our analysis of heterozygous (+/-) mutants has revealed a different phenotype. Specifically, monoallelic loss of rdx potentiated the startle reflex in response to acoustic stimulation of increasing intensities, suggesting a gain of function relative to wildtype littermates. The monoallelic loss of the rdx gene also facilitated pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex induced by weak auditory pre-pulse stimuli, indicating a modification to the circuit underlying sensorimotor gating of auditory input. However, the auditory brainstem response (ABR)-based hearing thresholds revealed a mild impairment in peripheral sound perception in rdx (+/-) mice, suggesting minor aberration of stereocilia structural integrity. Taken together, our data suggest a critical role of Rdx in the top-down processing and/or integration of auditory signals, and therefore a novel perspective to uncover further Rdx-mediated mechanisms in central auditory information processing.

Central nervous activity during an emotional Stroop task in fibromyalgia syndrome

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition of widespread pain accompanied by symptoms like depression, fatigue and cognitive impairments. In addition to central nervous pain sensitization, emotional dysregulation may be involved in FMS pathogenesis. This study investigated emotional influences on cognitive processing in FMS. Event-related potentials and theta oscillations were recorded during an emotional Stroop task including positive, negative, and neutral adjectives in 36 FMS patients and 35 controls. Patients had larger P3 amplitudes and greater theta power than controls, independent of the emotional word content. In patients, but not controls, negative words were associated with a larger late positive component (LPC) amplitude than positive words. No group difference was seen for P1, early posterior negativity or N4. Reaction times (RTs) were longer in patients than controls, independent of emotional word content. The P3 and theta oscillation findings suggest greater cognitive effort and attentional mobilization in FMS, which is needed to overcome the reduction of attentional resources resulting from central nervous pain sensitization. Although RTs do not support attentional bias in FMS, emotional modulation of the LPC amplitude may reflect preferential central nervous processing of negative information, which could contribute to pain and affective symptoms characterizing FMS. Signs Indicative of Central Sensitization Are Present but Not Associated with the Central Sensitization Inventory in Patients with Focal Nerve Injury.

Objective: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common focal nerve injury. People with CTS may show alterations in central processing of nociceptive information. It remains unclear whether the central sensitization inventory (CSI) is capable of detecting such altered central pain processing. Methods: Thirty healthy volunteers were matched with 30 people with unilateral CTS from the orthopaedic waitlist. Changes to central pain processing were established through psychophysical sensory testing (bilateral pressure pain thresholds (PPT), conditioned pain modulation, temporal summation) and pain distribution on body charts. Patients also completed pain severity and function questionnaires, psychological questionnaires and the CSI. Results: Compared to healthy volunteers, patients with CTS have lower PPTs over the carpal tunnel bilaterally (t = −4.06, p < 0.0001 ipsilateral and t = −4.58, p < 0.0001 contralateral) and reduced conditioned pain modulation efficacy (t = −7.31, p <0.0001) but no differences in temporal summation (t = 0.52, p = 0.60). The CSI was not associated with psychophysical measures or pain distributions indicative of altered central pain processing. However, there was a correlation of the CSI with the Beck Depression Inventory (r = 0.426; p = 0.019). Conclusion: Patients with CTS show signs of altered central pain mechanisms. The CSI seems unsuitable to detect changes in central pain processing but is rather associated with psychological factors in people with focal nerve injuries.

Recording from an Identified Neuron Efficiently Reveals Hazard for Brain Function in Risk Assessment.

Modern societies use a continuously growing number of chemicals. Because these are released into the environment and are taken up by humans, rigorous (but practicable) risk assessment must precede the approval of new substances for commerce. A number of tests is applicable, but it has been very difficult to efficiently assay the effect of chemicals on communication and information processing in vivo in the adult vertebrate brain. Here, we suggest a straightforward way to rapidly and accurately detect effects of chemical exposure on action potential generation, synaptic transmission, central information processing, and even processing in sensory systems in vivo by recording from a single neuron. The approach is possible in an identified neuron in the hindbrain of fish that integrates various sources of information and whose properties are ideal for rapid analysis of the various effects chemicals can have on the nervous system. The analysis uses fish but, as we discuss here, key neuronal functions are conserved and differences can only be due to differences in metabolism or passage into the brain, factors that can easily be determined. Speed and efficiency of the method, therefore, make it suitable to provide information in risk assessment, as we illustrate here with the effects of bisphenols on adult brain function.

Temperature sensation in Parkinson’s disease measured by quantitative sensory testing: a single-center, case-control study

Background The pathophysiology of abnormal temperature sensation in Parkinson’s disease (PD) remains unclear. Abnormal thermal detection does not seem to depend on the dopaminergic deficit, suggesting that other systems play a role in these changes, probably both central and peripheral. Methods We measured thermal detection thresholds (TDT) using quantitative sensory testing (QST) in 28 patients with PD and compared them with 15 healthy controls. Results Of 28 patients, 21% had increased TDT according to the normative data. TDT were higher on the dominant side. No correlation between TDT and disease duration, severity of motor impairment, and dopaminergic therapy was observed. 50% of the patients had difficulty differentiating between warm and cold stimuli, as TDT were within the normal range in most of these patients. Conclusions Twenty-one percent of the patients in our study had increased TDT according to the normative data. Abnormal thermal detection was more pronounced on the dominant side. Abnormal differentiation between the thermal stimuli suggest impaired central processing of thermal information.

No relation of Need for Cognition to basic executive functions.

Need for Cognition (NFC) refers to a personality trait describing the relatively stable intrinsic motivation of individuals to invest cognitive effort in cognitive endeavors. Higher NFC is associated with a more elaborated, central information processing style and increased recruitment of resources in cognitively demanding situations. To further clarify the association between cognitive resources and NFC, we examined in two studies how NFC relates to executive functions as basic cognitive abilities. In Study 1, 189 healthy young adults completed an NFC scale and a battery of six commonly used inhibitory control tasks (Stroop, antisaccade, stop-signal, flanker, shape-matching, word-naming). In Study 2, 102 healthy young adults completed the NFC scale and two tasks for each of the three executive functions inhibitory control (go-nogo, stop-signal), shifting (number-letter, color-shape), and working memory updating (two-back, letter-memory). Using a Bayesian approach to correlation analysis, we found no conclusive evidence that NFC was related to any executive function measure. Instead, we obtained even moderate evidence for the null hypothesis. Both studies add to more recent findings that shape the understanding of NFC as a trait that is less characterized by increased cognitive control abilities but rather by increased willingness to invest effort and exert self-control via motivational processes.

Movement perception of the tonic vibration reflex is abnormal in functional limb weakness

IntroductionWe tested the hypothesis that functional limb weakness is associated with possible dysfunction of the central processing of proprioceptive information, by evaluating the amount of tonic vibration reflex (TVR) and the perception of the TVR movement. MethodsThe study sample was 20 patients with functional weakness of the lower and/or the upper limbs and 25 healthy controls; delivery of 92-Hz transcutaneous vibration of the biceps brachii tendon of the unrestrained arm stimulated predominantly the muscle spindle afferent and elicited elbow flexion (tonic vibration reflex, TVR). Blindfolded participants had to match the final position of the vibrated arm with their contralateral tracking arm. The TVR and perception of the TVR movement were measured as angle movements of the vibrated arm and the tracking arm, respectively. ResultsThe magnitude of the TVR of the vibrated arm and movement perception of the TVR of the tracking arm were significantly reduced in the patients compared to the controls. No correlation was found between magnitude of the TVR and perception of the TVR movement, suggesting that the abnormalities were independent of each other. Moreover, the abnormalities did not differ between the patients with/without bilateral upper limb involvement or between the affected and the unaffected side in patients with unilateral impairment, suggesting that the observed deficits are independent of motor impairment. ConclusionsProprioceptive dysfunction may underlie alterations in body movement and in sense of agency in such patients and may play a role in the pathophysiology of functional limb weakness.

Niobium Neuron: RSFQ Based Bio-Inspired Circuit

Neuromorphic and bio-inspired circuits have reached considerable attention since Moore's Law is coming to its limitations. Information processing in mammalian brains takes place in a far more energy-efficient manner and significantly faster than in the best computing architecture nowadays. We propose an approach to bring those benefits to a superconducting information processing circuit. Since the computation in a neuronal network is considered as analogue and the computation as digital, the design is grown around a Josephson comparator with its inherent non-linearity in the transfer function as the central information processing unit. Furthermore, a modified version of the Josephson Transmission Line is used to realize an adaptable coupling between neuron cells. This circuit design benefits of the noise in a 4.2 K environment and is therefore more resilient to noise and switching errors than conventional digital circuits. The proposed circuit behavior in a 2-neuron configuration and the integration in a network topology will be investigated.

What drives the helpfulness of online reviews? A deep learning study of sentiment analysis, pictorial content and reviewer expertise for mature destinations

Tourist destinations are increasingly affected by travel-related information shared through social media. Drawing on dual-process theories on how individuals process information, this study examines the role of central and peripheral information processing routes in the formation of consumers' perceptions of the helpfulness of online reviews of mature destinations. We carried out a two-step process to address the perceived helpfulness of user-generated content, a sentiment analysis using advanced machine-learning techniques (deep learning), and a regression analysis. The database was 2023 comments posted on TripAdvisor about two iconic Venetian cultural attractions, St. Mark's Square (an open, free attraction) and the Doge's Palace (which charges an entry fee). Using deep-learning techniques, with logistic regression, we first identified which factors influenced whether a review received a “helpful” vote. Second, we selected those reviews which received at least one helpful vote to identify, through linear regression, the significant determinants of TripAdvisor users' voting behaviour. The results showed that reviewer expertise is influential in both free and paid-for attractions, although the impact of central cues (sentiment polarity, subjectivity, pictorial content) differs for both attractions. Our study suggests that managers should look beyond individual ratings and focus on the sentiment analysis of online reviews, which are shown to be based on the nature of the attraction (free vs. paid-for).

Anaerobic endosymbiont generates energy for ciliate host by denitrification

Mitochondria are specialized eukaryotic organelles that have a dedicated function in oxygen respiration and energy production. They evolved about 2 billion years ago from a free-living bacterial ancestor (probably an alphaproteobacterium), in a process known as endosymbiosis1,2. Many unicellular eukaryotes have since adapted to life in anoxic habitats and their mitochondria have undergone further reductive evolution3. As a result, obligate anaerobic eukaryotes with mitochondrial remnants derive their energy mostly from fermentation4. Here we describe ‘Candidatus Azoamicus ciliaticola’, which is an obligate endosymbiont of an anaerobic ciliate and has a dedicated role in respiration and providing energy for its eukaryotic host. ‘Candidatus A. ciliaticola’ contains a highly reduced 0.29-Mb genome that encodes core genes for central information processing, the electron transport chain, a truncated tricarboxylic acid cycle, ATP generation and iron–sulfur cluster biosynthesis. The genome encodes a respiratory denitrification pathway instead of aerobic terminal oxidases, which enables its host to breathe nitrate instead of oxygen. ‘Candidatus A. ciliaticola’ and its ciliate host represent an example of a symbiosis that is based on the transfer of energy in the form of ATP, rather than nutrition. This discovery raises the possibility that eukaryotes with mitochondrial remnants may secondarily acquire energy-providing endosymbionts to complement or replace functions of their mitochondria.

Illusion of SNS influence: are popular SNS influential

People influence each other in the environment of social networking sites (SNS). Some SNS have gained popularity. Practitioners and researchers assume that these popular SNS are influential. However, influence and popularity are two different concepts. This research aims to provide two clear concepts of influence and popularity as well as their relationship. Popularity is hypothesised that it is affected by elements in the surroundings (e.g. societal position of a SNS owner) of SNS based on a peripheral information processing mechanism, whereas influence is hypothesised that it is affected by core elements (e.g. quality of content on a SNS message) of SNS based on a central information processing mechanism. The results indicate that influence is solely affected by the central information processing mechanism, but popularity is affected by both central and peripheral information processing mechanisms. There is a relationship between influence and popularity but it is marginal. Therefore, it should not be assumed that popular SNS are influential and vice versa.
