Abstract 3554: Using All of Us cancer data on the Researcher Workbench to advance career development

Abstract This session will provide an overview of the All of Us Research Program (All of Us) dataset, discuss a mechanism to build the capacity of research institutions using the All of Us dataset, and outline the career benefits researchers experienced from using the dataset. All of Us is building a national health dataset to accelerate medical breakthroughs. It is used by cancer researchers to advance health research and career development. This dataset is large and diverse, both in the data types available as well as the demographics of participants: as of April 2023, health data from 413,450+ participants is available to researchers, from a variety of distinct data types, including survey responses, physical measurements, electronic health records, whole genome sequencing, wearable data, and genotyping arrays, with 75% of participants self-identifying as underrepresented in biomedical research and about 45% of participants self-identifying as racial and ethnic minorities. Researchers already leverage this dataset, with All of Us data used in more than 210 publications across peer-reviewed journals. In addition, this dataset is useful for cancer researchers - All of Us EHR data indicates over 60,700 participants are diagnosed with at least one type of cancer, and more than 10% of research projects underway (725/6,945 as of September 2023) using the All of Us dataset are cancer-related, making it the top condition studied by researchers. To help build capacity at research institutions, All of Us collaborated with the NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE) to develop a Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) titled Administrative Supplements to Support "All of Us" and Health Disparities-Related Pilot Research Projects at NCI CRCHD-Funded PACHE Partnerships. The focus of this NOSI was on P20 and U54 awards associated with research projects led by PACHE researchers interested in exploring the connections between social determinants of health outcomes and populations experiencing cancer health disparities. Abstract A053: Development and evaluation of a community-informed intervention to improve clinical trial knowledge and interest: Preliminary findings

Abstract Introduction: Nationally, racial and ethnic disparities in cancer clinical trial participation exist. Black Americans are underrepresented in cancer clinical trials, with approximately 9% of clinical trial participants in studies sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) identifying as Black. As part of work supported by the NCI’s National Outreach Network, we adapted educational materials provided by the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) for dissemination across KCI’s catchment area. Our study aimed to increase knowledge and interest in clinical trials with a focus on concerns salient among Black Americans. Methods: We adapted a CRCHD educational PowerPoint presentation to create Project FACCTs: Facts about Cancer Clinical Trials, a multicultural online video intervention. Adaptation included input from our cancer center’s longstanding Black American community stakeholders and collaborators. who shared a preference for video format versus PowerPoint presentation and recommended inclusion of a discussion of medical mistrust as well as information on clinical trial costs. Participants were recruited through KCI clinics and community partners. Assessments, provided by the CRCHD, included an 11-item measure of clinical trial knowledge (true/false) as well as 6-item measure of clinical trials interest and attitudes, including likelihood of future participation in a trial (strongly disagree to strongly agree). Assessments were administered as pre- and post-tests. Results: The majority of our 307 participants identified as Black American (59.3%), female (76.9%), college graduates (63.5%), and had health insurance from a former or current employer (49.8%). Overall, clinical trial knowledge was relatively high at both pre-test (mean=86.7% correct) and post-test (mean=87% correct) across the entire sample. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between Black and White participants on clinical trial knowledge from pre-test (Black: 84.5%; White: 94%) to post-test (Black: 85.4%; White: 93%) (F(1,2) =20.6, p=.01). Across the entire sample, a paired samples t-test showed that clinical trial interest increased after viewing Project FACCTs, (t (297)=-8.84, p=.01). A repeated measures ANOVA demonstrated that within groups there was statistically significant improvement in interest and attitudes towards participating in a clinical trial (F(1, 295) = 34.8 p=.01). Between groups, White participants had a higher overall score in clinical trial interest compared to Black participants (F(1, 2) =9.13, p=.01). Conclusions: Project FACCTs shows promise as a tool that can improve community members' knowledge, awareness, and interest in clinical trials. One limitation of the work reported here is that participants already had high clinical trials knowledge so the intervention’s effect on those with low knowledge is an area for future inquiry. Abstract B008: Evaluation of the NCI’s Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities (GMaP) program

Abstract (A) Purpose: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Programs (GMaP) is a national program funded by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). GMaP supports the academic and professional development of underrepresented minority (URM) scholars conducting cancer and cancer health disparities (CHDs) research and is comprised of seven regions with an academic institution or cancer center serving as the region-based “hub”. Collectively, each region enhances capacity of scholars through dispersal of pilot funding and research stimulus awards for preliminary research, technical assistance workshops and webinars, expert grant reviews, conference travel and registration support, mentor matching, and training navigation among others. Understanding the value and impact of these services for URM scholars is essential to future programmatic planning. (B) Description: The regional offices collaborated on the development and deployment of a GMaP Awardee Evaluation Survey to GMaP scholars that have received support (e.g., pilot funding, travel scholarships, expert grant reviews) over the past 10 years. The survey included demographic questions, research interests, extent of engagement, awards applied for and/or received, as well as general feedback of the value of the program. The goal of the survey was to evaluate how and through which mechanisms GMaP funding has facilitated professional development activities, in addition to understanding the value of this support to scholars. (C) Results: 190 awardees from across the country responded to the survey. The majority (61%) of respondents were new to GMaP having joined in the last three years. 71.3% were female, and represented diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds (33% were white, 28% Black or African American, 16% Asian) and 31% were of Hispanic or Latino decent. Almost half (42%) were first generation college students. Over one-third (37.2%) stated that they were early stage investigators followed by postdoctoral (22.3%). 60% stated they had received conference and travel support, 19% research stimulus awards, and 25% a pilot project award. A number of respondents indicated they had received a CURE Diversity Supplement or KOI. Comments such as, “I was able to get my dissertation research completed. Funding from GMaP was instrumental to my success”, “I hired an undergrad research assistant from an URM community and we have published 2 papers together”, and “I was able to attend the AACR conference to present my work” highlight the scholars’ perspectives when asked about the impact/value of GMaP. Here, we will present both quantitative and qualitative data from this survey. (D) Conclusions: There is a national priority to increase diversity in the biomedical research workforce, and GMaP supports these efforts through enhancing the capacity of URM cancer and CHDs researchers. The funding opportunities provided by GMaP are highly valued by URM scholars and provide support to building a strong pipeline of diverse scholars. Abstract PO-211: 2020 Impact on research productivity survey: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) regional response

Abstract Purpose: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program is a national program funded by the National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). The seven GMaP regions use a multipronged engagement approach to increase recruitment/retention of diverse investigators and to strengthen professional development. This survey was designed to assess if and how the events of 2020 (COVID, racial or political unrest, others) impacted current research productivity, applications for future funding, and publication submission. Methods: A REDCap survey was sent out to each of the GMaP regional listservs in October 2020 and was completed by 150 researchers by early stage (71, 50.0%) and established investigators (36, 25.4%). Half (51%) identified as a non-white race, and 17.8% identifying as Hispanic or Latino. 22.7% of respondents were from Region 4. Responses were recorded via 6 point Likert scale (No Impact, Minimal, Neutral, Significant Impact, Work Stoppage, Expanded Scope) and allowed for qualitative responses. Summary of Results for Region 4: More than half stated the pandemic created “Significant or Work Stoppage” on their current research. Only 11.8% were able to submit intended publications on time. Only 21.2% still planned to submit applications for future funding on their intended timeline. Systemic racism/social unrest was identified as Significant Impact to 50%, along with 47.1% by local/national politics. Qualitative responses provided profound examples of the difficulties researchers have experienced in 2020. Respondents indicated that pilot awards (76.7%) and research support awards (40%) are the best methods to support their career development. Recommendations: The GMaP network with its regional approach is well placed to continue to support the career development needs of their researchers. GMaP opened their trainings to virtual national audiences, and adapted travel award programs to provide smaller Research Support awards (21 awarded) and larger Pilot Awards (4 awarded). GMaP shared the stories of their members with NCI, and advocated for support. These data further inform and enhance specific GMaP program offerings, and help us better advocate for our researchers at the institutional and national level. The NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities: Moving Forward to Eliminate Cancer Health Disparities and Diversify the Cancer Biomedical Workforce

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) was established in 2001 with the purpose of confronting and eliminating cancer health disparities, while increasing workforce diversity in cancer research.Over the last two decades, CRCHD has generated a broad range of research, training, and community outreach activities to address these overarching goals through a variety of programs including the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE), Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE), Special Populations Networks (SPN), Community Networks Program (CNP), CNP Centers (CNPC), and Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP).CRCHD, through its CURE and now its Intramural CURE (iCURE) programs, has been fully dedicated to training the next generation of competitive researchers from backgrounds typically underrepresented in the cancer and cancer health disparities research fields. Today, CRCHD leads NCI's efforts in supporting research training and career development experiences beginning as early as middle school and continuing through to tenured track appointments.CRCHD has also developed a robust basic research focus in cancer disparities, which has recently expanded into translational disparities research and the generation of novel, authenticated animal models appropriate for advancing disparities research investigations.Additionally, CRCHD has fostered an integrated networks infrastructure to complement and support its disparities research and diversity training efforts, as well as provide cancer education and outreach among racially and ethnically diverse and medically underserved communities.Moving forward, the CRCHD will continue its steadfast efforts to move us closer to the day when diversity is a given and disparities no longer exist.

Abstract IA14: Emerging priorities for the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities in diversity workforce training and cancer health disparities research

Abstract This panel presentation will provide an overview of the current training and research funding priorities at National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). CRCHD is NCI's focal point for the training of competitive cancer researchers from diverse populations and supporting cancer health disparities research across the cancer continuum. The NCI's CRCHD's Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE), Intramural CURE (iCURE), and the Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE) will be highlighted as successful models for diversity training and cancer health disparities research. The CURE Program supports extramural research training and education experiences for under-represented individuals beginning in middle school and continuing through to first academic appointment. The newly launched iCURE Program supports mentored research experiences within the NCI Intramural Research Program for students and fellows. In addition, the PACHE Program supports cancer and cancer health disparities research, education, and outreach through partnerships between Minority-Serving Institutions and NCI-designated Cancer Centers. New and established NCI funding opportunities in cancer health disparities research, including opportunities supporting both basic and translational research addressing cancer health disparities, will also be presented. Abstract B110: Reducing cancer disparities through identification of linkages to care partners within GMaP Region 1 North

Abstract Introduction: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) supports two national networks within its Integrated Network Program (INP): the Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) and the National Outreach Network (NON). CRCHD strategically engages in facilitation efforts to integrate and disseminate efforts focused on reducing cancer health disparities among the scientific community and to the underserved communities they serve. The GMaP Region 1 North (R1N) hub is one of 7 regional GMaP hubs, led by Regional Coordinating Directors (RCDs) and inclusive of 8 NON CHES across 6 cancer center sites. The R1N hub is based at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Kentucky. R1N has partnered with Johns Hopkins University's Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Virginia Cancer Center to serve Delaware, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, DC. RCDs and NON CHEs collaborate to enhance the capacity of regional cancer centers, academic and research partners and community partners to reduce regional cancer health disparities. Identification of preventative screening programs, or “linkages to care,” currently in place across our region and dissemination of this information to key partners was a strategy employed by R1N. Methods: RCDs conducted a web search of all R1N member institutions and organizations and of NON CHEs cancer outreach, education activities and cancer screening initiatives. Using key search terms such as “cancer screenings,” “cancer education,” “cancer awareness,” “clinical trials” for each cancer type (breast, colon, lung, prostate, cervical and ovarian), they searched within each state and DC as well as queried social media channels (Facebook, Google+, Twitter and YouTube) of each R1N member to reveal “linkages to care” data available for each. Results: While search engines provided results in response to our query methods described above, we noted that cancer-specific awareness months offer frequencies for NON CHE interactions through member institutions and for community members occur at least once a quarter in correlation with cancer-specific awareness months campaigns. Based on methods used, RCDs successfully developed, implemented, and disseminated the plan to identify Linkages to Care within R1N. Conclusions: RCDs recommend that R1N member institutions and organizations dedicate web pages to Linkages to Care and adopt social media accounts for their respective public health divisions and/or organizations sponsoring cancer education, outreach, screening initiatives and clinical trials recruitment. Abstract Purpose: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP), initiated in 2009, is a national program funded by the National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). CRCHD is committed to funding training for those from backgrounds under-represented in cancer research via comprehensive research training programs, Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE). GMaP Region 4, housed at Fox Chase Cancer Center, works to engage diverse investigators in our geographically expansive thirteen-state region utilizing a multipronged engagement approach to increase recruitment and retention of diverse investigators, expand the CURE Pipeline, and cultivate professional development. Based on nine years of experience as well as recent results from surveys provided to recipients of travel scholarships and/or CURE funding (i.e., NCI Diversity F, K or R series grant), we will share recommended strategies to incorporate best practices to recruit investigators into a sustainable network. Methods: Two surveys were conducted. A survey with the goal to learn more about CURE program awareness at institutions was sent via our listserv with the request that any eligible (current or former CURE awardee) respond via an open link. A second survey with the goal of learning how our travel award scholarship program has benefited investigators was sent directly to our 37 previously funded travel award recipients. Abstract A061: Screen to save: Educating Utahns about colorectal cancer prevention and screening

Abstract In 2016, the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) launched Screen to Save: Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative (S2S). The initiative's primary goal aligned with Blue Ribbon Panel Cancer Moonshot recommendations to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates by 80% by 2018. Nationally, S2S was implemented by Community Health Educators (CHEs) from NCI-Designated Cancer Centers. S2S implementation Phase 1 included education and awareness, and phase 2, connection to at-home screening and a 3-month follow-up survey. Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah participated in phase 1 and a modified follow-up survey. In 2016, Utah's Public Health Indicator Based Information System reported that 72.7% of Utah adults aged 50-75 received CRC screening. In addition, an HCI community health needs assessment identified CRC screening rates as a health disparity in four rural/frontier Utah health districts. HCI's existing collaborations and partnerships helped facilitate S2S activities in summer and fall of 2017. HCI's outreach team, which included trained graduate-level interns and Community Health Workers (CHWs), implemented S2S presentations and health events with local and rural populations, including Pacific Islander, American Indian, and African-American groups. Educational materials were provided by CRCHD and culturally tailored by HCI CHEs. CRC prevention and screening education was delivered in English and Spanish through one or more of the following methods: PowerPoint presentation, flipchart, and giant inflatable colorectal cancer education exhibit. Participants were given a pre-test before the intervention and a post-test following the educational component. De-identified survey data were sent to NCI and combined with data from other participating S2S sites. HCI's goal of 100 surveys was surpassed with 124 collected. Data analysis from Phase 1 of S2S showed an increase in knowledge and intention to screen as a result of HCI's educational intervention. More importantly, data highlighted the need for understanding connections between lifestyle, individual behaviors, and CRC risk—specifically, risks due to poor nutrition and obesity. In addition, data showed the need for awareness of CRC screening options such as the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). Knowledge of the FOBT/FIT increased from 48.75% (pre-intervention) to 83.55% (post-intervention). In addition, the CHE collaborated internally with HCI Communications and Public Affairs to host a Twitter chat and Facebook Live event. Abstract D036: Assessing underrepresented and health disparities investigators’ interests and needed research support in emerging areas of science

Abstract Purpose: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP), initiated 2009, is a national program funded by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). GMaP Region 4 is a thirteen state region with over 800 members of underrepresented and health disparities investigators utilizing a multipronged engagement approach to support diverse investigators in their career trajectory including basic, clinical, population and translational research. Understanding how to support these investigators to be successful in new emerging areas of science is critical. Methods: Previous surveys focused on barriers to funding for diversity training awardees and feedback on the value of specific programs, such as travel scholarships supporting early stage investigators (ESI). This current survey focuses additionally on emerging areas of science, including: precision medicine, mHealth, implementation science and commercialization to better understand our members current research interest in these areas and the kinds of support investigators need as they compete in these arenas. This survey is being distributed and data collection and analysis will be completed this summer. Summary of Results: Our previous surveys indicated that ESI’s ranked the following services as “Most Beneficial.” Travel Scholarships – (95.5%); Pilot Funds (for feasibility data collection to support ongoing research) – (, 77.3%); E-blast with job/funding/training resources – (54.5%); Grant Review - (50.0%); and Introductions to CRCHD Program Officers in Training Navigation - (47.6%). We will compare findings from the current survey to determine the ongoing value of these programs as well as the scope of current research in these new emerging areas and the types of support and services required to build investigators research portfolios in these areas. Recommendations: Ongoing programmatic strategies utilized by GMaP Region 4 have been highly valued. The findings of this current survey will provide a deeper understanding of underrepresented and health disparities researchers’ interest in emerging areas of precision medicine, mHealth, implementation science and commercialization as well as recommendations on how to support their research in these areas particularly related to health disparities. Abstract A059: Promoting workforce diversity for cancer and cancer health disparities researchers: Approaches used by the Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) Regions 3 and 5

Abstract Background/Rationale: A barrier to improving access to quality care for underserved minority groups, as well as advancing research on health disparities, is the lack of workforce diversity in the United States. Research reports that minority physicians and scientists continue to be significantly under-represented in medical and scientific communities. Funded by the National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), GMaP is rooted in the conviction that a diverse workforce is essential for advancing cancer research and reducing cancer health disparities (CHD). We consider the overall scope and programming of two GMaP Regions, Region 3, serving Central to Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado, and Region 5, serving Central to Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, America Samoa, and Guam. We will focus on approaches to professional development training and consider how each enhances opportunities for minority students and early-career investigators to participate in a diverse research workforce and create health equity in the U.S. Approaches: We will discuss the multidisciplinary strategies used by GMaP Regions 3 and 5 to recruit students, early-career investigators, and cancer and CHD researchers into sustainable networks designed to provide meaningful training, engagement, and funding opportunities for ethnically/racially and/or geographically diverse individuals. We will review Region 3's travel-based strategy in which training encounters are conducted at multiple regional partner institutions, and Region 5's Career Development Workshop in which individuals from partner institutions travel to Seattle for an annual multiday training. Results: We will share feedback from these learning encounters, and specific examples of these approaches to ascertain that although time and resource intensive, such training encounters are successful and beneficial to GMaP individuals. Outcomes will include data from our overall GMaP programmatic evaluations, training feedback, and scientific product publication/dissemination and successful funding received by under-represented participant members. Conclusion: Creating a diverse cancer research workforce is challenging; however, continued engagement with under-represented students, faculty, and early-career researchers who desire training to participate fully in NIH/NCI funding mechanisms is vital to reverse structural, educational, and resource-related trends that perpetuate an inequitable research workforce. Although identifying promising candidates and providing support in sufficient flexible ways to be truly beneficial for each individual member may be slow and resource intensive, this research demonstrates that each encounter and training helps take members one step closer to her/his professional goal. Abstract D016: Colorectal cancer education among ethnic minority populations

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Although the disease is primarily found among older adults, racial/ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by CRC. Most CRC deaths can be prevented through early screening; yet, in most states, less than 20% of racial and ethnic minorities report having had a blood stool test within the past year. The Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) launched the Screen to Save (S2S): NCI Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative to increase CRC screening rates among racially and ethnically diverse and rural communities across the nation. City of Hope community health educators (CHEs) worked with community, clinical, and academic partners to conduct CRC educational workshops (via PowerPoint/Flipchart) and outreach activities, and promoted screening tools, such as FIT kits, among racially and ethnically diverse populations. We administered NCI developed pre/post surveys that assessed any changes in CRC knowledge and intention to screen. A total of 134 persons received the S2S education. Most (66%) were age 50 or older; 84% were female; and 62% self-reported as Hispanics/Latinos; 14% African-American. Most (52%) preferred Spanish, 44% had less than a high school education, and 17% of had no insurance. Most (79%) of participants age 50 or older have been previously screened for colorectal cancer. Results show statistically significant increases in knowledge about colon cancer risk and prevention practices with all groups showing an increase in scores across the two time periods (Z=-7.843; p<.000). After participating in one of the S2S events (n=108) 97% of participants agreed that they were more likely to talk to their health providers about CRC screening, 96% to get screened for CRC, 96% to talk to their family or friends about CRC, 95.5% to eat healthier, and 94.5% to increase physical activity. Our findings suggest that educational workshops are effective at increasing knowledge in ethnic minority populations. Although participants are knowledgeable about the risks of CRC, there needs to be more navigation and education in follow-up with participants to submit FIT Kits. In addition, intention to screen is high among our population, therefore more needs to be done in healthcare settings to follow-up with participants regarding their interest in screening. Healthcare access and coverage resources and referrals need to be provided to participants without a medical home or who are uninsured. These healthcare resources can include FQHCs and community clinics, where medically underserved and vulnerable community members can obtain low to no cost care. Abstract D011: Assessing a toolkit and training community health workers to increase colorectal cancer screening rates among Hispanics in New Mexico

Abstract Rationale: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in the US and the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer in New Mexico (NM). CRC is the fourth most common cause of death among Hispanics in NM. NM Hispanics are more likely than non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with later stage CRC (71% vs 50%). Due to NM’s diverse geography and culture, combined with a statewide shortage of medical professionals, community health workers (CHWs) serve as a critical link to health information in local communities. Funded by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), the National Outreach Network (NON) Community Health Educator (CHE) program supports direct community outreach and adapts and tests educational initiatives. We describe one such initiative here. We used the RE-AIM framework to develop a CRC-focused training and toolkit for CHWs to apply in their work. The goal of this study is to assess the effectiveness and suitability of these materials. A sub-analysis explored barriers and facilitators to toolkit implementation and CRC screening interventions in predominantly monolingual Spanish-speaking communities. Approaches: We finalized the toolkit and training through a multi-year process that incorporated community and stakeholder input. The 3-hour in-person training focused on CRC risk, screening, and prevention, and included modules on anatomy, screening methods, and barriers to screening. A subset of CHWs completed semi-structured interviews at follow-up to provide insight into practical toolkit use. We used descriptive statistics to assess participant demographics. We used paired t-tests to assess mean changes in pre/ post-training survey data in knowledge and confidence. Results: We enrolled 79 CHWs (female: 89.9%, Hispanic: 94.9%) with median CHW experience 7 years (IQR: 3,15). 59.5% reported their patients prefer speaking Spanish, 29.1% prefer English, and 11.4% prefer both equally or another language. 30.4% of CHWs report their own preference for Spanish, 45.6% prefer English, 22.8% are equally comfortable with both, and 1.3% other language. Initial analyses show improvement for knowledge (mean 16.9%; 95%CI: 13.9, 19.9; p <.001), and confidence on a 1-5 point scale where 5 is extreme confidence (mean 1.6 points; 95%CI: 1.3, 1.8; p <.001). All participants agreed the training will help navigate barriers related to CRC screenings, while a majority said the trainings fit with their work (89.7%), they will use the knowledge and skills (97.4%), and the toolkit will make them a more effective team member (98.7%). Qualitative data additionally support known or suspected barriers to screening for monolingual Spanish speakers. Conclusion: While the training appears effective at increasing CRC knowledge, changes in confidence and beliefs are less clear. Educating CHWs and providing them with appropriate materials addresses some gaps to improve CRC screening rates; however, other barriers to screening among NM Hispanics remain. Screen to Save: Results from NCI's Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative to Promote Awareness and Knowledge of Colorectal Cancer in Racial/Ethnic and Rural Populations.

The Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), NCI, implemented Screen to Save, NCI's Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative to promote awareness and knowledge of colorectal cancer in racial/ethnic and rural populations. The initiative was implemented through CRCHD's National Outreach Network (NON). NON is a national network of Community Health Educators (CHE), aligned with NCI-designated Cancer Centers across the nation. In phases I and II, the CHEs focused on the dissemination of cancer-related information and implementation of evidence-based educational outreach. In total, 3,183 pre/post surveys were obtained from male and female participants, ages 50 to 74 years, during the 347 educational events held in phase I. Results demonstrated all racial/ethnic groups had an increase in colorectal cancer-related knowledge, and each group strongly agreed that the educational event increased the likelihood that they would engage in colorectal cancer-related healthful behaviors (e.g., obtain colorectal cancer screening and increase physical activity). For phase II, Connections to Care, event participants were linked to screening. Eighty-two percent of the participants who obtained colorectal cancer screening during the 3-month follow-up period obtained their screening results. These results suggest that culturally tailored, standardized educational messaging and data collection tools are key change agents that can serve to inform the effectiveness of educational outreach to advance awareness and knowledge of colorectal cancer. Future initiatives should focus on large-scale national efforts to elucidate effective models of connections to care, related to colorectal cancer screening, follow-up, and treatments that are modifiable to meet community needs.

Abstract A01: Standardizing tracking and evaluation in cancer disparities research: Utilizing REDCap to track training, education, and community engagement activities

Abstract The Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is dedicated to enhancing the diversity of the scientific workforce through training and education and supporting community engagement. The utilization of standardized tools to track and assist in the evaluation of outcomes from training, education, and community engagement programs is important to grants supported by the CRCHD. This case study describes the utilization of a readily available and secure web-based electronic tool, REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture), to broadly track and evaluate community engagement activities and training and education milestones in an Academic Cancer Center. Aim 1 describes the online survey tool created in REDCap to track all community engagement activities for the Cancer Center. Aim 2 describes methods and assessment tools created to track and evaluate mentoring relationships, training, educational activities, and career outcomes of trainees in an emerging cancer center seeking NCI designation. Training programs in the University of Illinois (UI) Cancer Center occur across the pipeline and target high school and undergraduate students, graduate and pre- and post-doctoral students, and early-stage investigators with a focus on populations under-represented in health disparities research. The utilization of REDCap will allow outcomes from NCI CRCHD funded programs and other training, education, and community engagement programs to uniformly track outcomes and assess efficacy to ensure alignment with NCI priorities for cancer centers in community engagement and training and education. Our case study supports the NIH's efforts to ensure longitudinal tracking of training and education programs for a minimum of 10 years and to ensure community engagement targeting the cancer center's catchment area. Abstract C50: Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP): A regional strategy for expanding the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) pipeline in cancer research nationwide

Abstract Background/Rationale: The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP), initiated in 2009, is a national program funded by the National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). CRCHD is committed to funding training for those from backgrounds under-represented in cancer biomedical and behavioral sciences research. Based on the belief that a diverse workforce is essential for advancing cancer research and reducing cancer health disparities (CHD), CRCHD developed innovative and comprehensive research training programs. GMaP, consisting of seven regions across the nation, strives to support these programs and enhance capacity in areas of: • CHD research • Recruitment and professional development of under-represented investigators, trainees, and students • Communication and dissemination of NCI priorities, cancer/CHD trainings, and professional development opportunities • Strengthening region-based community education and engagement through partnerships with university cancer centers, minority-serving institutions and Community Health Education Programs We highlight strategies utilized across GMaP regions to increase recruitment and retention of diverse investigators; expand the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Pipeline; cultivate professional development for students and early-stage investigators; promote innovative, cooperative research to reduce CHD; increase participation of minority populations under-represented in extant cancer research agendas; and encourage health equity for diverse U.S. cancer patient and survivor populations. Approach: Though each region operates independently, many strategies have been identified as best practices for raising awareness of CHD, the GMaP network, and the diversity training programs it supports, as well as NCI/CRCHD funding priorities. Utilizing a core administrative structure, Regional Coordinating Director(s) provide clear communication via websites, listservs, e-blasts, and other social media. GMaP regions offer several resources to students/investigators working in cancer or CHD research, including: • Pilot project and/or research completion awards—1-year grants between $5000 and $20,000 for early-stage investigators to develop data or complete pilot research for use towards larger grant submissions • Travel scholarships–to facilitate conference, workshop, or mentor meeting travel • Annual meetings/workshops—face to face experiences to improve grant-development skills, meet potential mentors, develop cross-institutional collaborations, and discuss research priorities and projects in the region • Expert grant review–grant application (e.g., K-awards) reviews by senior researchers to improve scientific merit of grant applications by junior investigators • Research Day events—opportunities to highlight junior investigators • Educational webinar series–on-line training on grant development and various CURE grant mechanisms • Undergraduate pipeline programs–to promote research experiences for underrepresented minority students interested in cancer research Results: We will share specific examples of these successful strategies utilized to engage more than 3,290 cancer/CHD researchers, faculty, and students across the U.S., including distribution of nearly 4,000 training, funding, and career opportunities. We will discuss outcomes such as successful receipt of CURE funding and increased numbers of diverse applicants in the cancer/cancer health disparities pipelines to demonstrate the effectiveness of such coordinated efforts. Abstract C65: Feasibility and preliminary impact of the Screen to Save Initiative on colorectal cancer screening knowledge

Abstract Background: In response to the ten recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Panel for the Cancer Moonshot, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) introduced the national Screen to Save (S2S): NCI Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative. The S2S intervention aimed to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates among racially and ethnically diverse communities nationwide. To carry out this initiative, the CRCHD called upon NCI-funded Community Health Educators (CHEs) from the Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE) to deliver culturally tailored, evidence-based CRC education and screening resources within their respective catchment communities. Under the San Diego State University/UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Partnership, the Juntos Contra el Cáncer team and the CHE identified specific Latino communities in San Diego County, California to which the S2S initiative was delivered. Objectives: The aims were to assess the feasibility of implementing the S2S program and to evaluate the preliminary impact of the S2S program on knowledge of CRC screening. It was hypothesized that CRC knowledge would increase significantly after implementation of the intervention. Methods: The S2S educational materials were culturally tailored for Latinos and offered in both English and Spanish. The sample included 42 Latinos (men=9 and women=33) ages 50-75 who participated in a 15-minute one-on-one or group educational intervention. Participants were recruited from community settings such as libraries, senior centers, and health fairs. The educational intervention strategies included a presentation using either a flipchart or a PowerPoint slideshow, both of which delivered information on CRC, risk factors, and screening methods. All enrolled participants were administered a consent form and a pretest before the intervention. Following the educational components, participants completed a post-test assessing knowledge and a qualitative survey evaluating the program, and received a $15 gift card as well as educational materials on colorectal cancer from the American Cancer Society. Analysis: A paired-samples t-test was conducted to evaluate the preliminary influence of the intervention on participants' scores on CRC knowledge measured by 14-item questionnaire in a pretest/post-test intervention study. Results: The results showed a statistically significant increase in CRC knowledge from the pretest [M=11.74 (3.04)] to the post-test [M=14.10 (3.40), t (41) = -6.29, p < .0005 (two-tailed)]. The results of the qualitative survey indicated that most participants expressed satisfaction with the S2S program and found the visuals and recommendations to be helpful. Overall, participants reported having learned about CRC, polyps, and screening methods. Some participants provided recommendations to improve the program, such as: (1) increasing awareness of CRC through other communication channels, (2) allocating more time to provide the health education, and (3) simplifying medical terminology. One participant reported that providing this information in a public setting was inconvenient due to the nature of the topic. Discussion: The present study's results suggest that the S2S program showed preliminary efficacy in increasing CRC knowledge among participants. Also, our findings suggest that the S2S program was feasible to implement in a community setting. Based on participants' feedback, it is recommended that the terminology used in the S2S program be simplified. Research suggests that increasing CRC knowledge and awareness is a crucial component to increasing CRC screening rates among racially and ethnically diverse communities. Future research should examine the impact of the S2S program on the screening practices of participants who receive program using a rigorous study design. Abstract A70: Geographic management of cancer health disparities programs (gmap) region 5: Strategies to promote and support the next generation of cancer researchers

Abstract Background: The National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) is invested in supporting and strengthening workforce diversity by increasing the number and quality of competitive grant applications and awards from underrepresented trainees, scholars and early stage investigators via the Continuing Umbrella Research Experience (CURE) program. More specifically, CRCHD is interested in receiving a greater number of competitive mentored career development award applications from under-represented applicants. Chief among these are the K-series awards. In response to this call to action, GMaP Region 5 has developed and implemented a number of strategies aimed at increasing the quantity of high-quality competitive career development award submissions from under-represented early stage investigators within the region. Methods: To be successful, Region 5 has put into place a number of strategies and resources to identify potential K-series applicants and to provide on-going support and mentorship to encourage competitive submissions of K-series applications by new under-represented applicants. Recognizing that different strategies work for different individuals, the totality of strategies is designed to address a variety of needs, including mentoring, feedback, communication with one's peers, and networking. To facilitate this, Region 5 has developed the following: a mentorship program that pairs applicants with a senior investigator from within the region who will provide feedback on grant proposals, a travel scholarship program that facilitates opportunities for regional and national networking and grant writing workshop participation, a one day career development workshop for potential applicants, a weekly listserv email that includes job/funding/training opportunities and relevant resources for early stage investigators, among other activities. Results: Based on an evaluation, a key finding is that scholars and early stage investigators located in Region 5 were not only aware of the various strategies, they also found them to be valuable resources that they either utilize or intend to utilize. A number of early stage investigators, for example, have availed themselves of mentoring from senior investigators. Other early stage investigators have received feedback from senior academicians. The last one-day training workshop, as another example, included 14 trainees from diverse venues in the region, which extends from Alaska to Guam. Evaluations from the workshop will be discussed. Conclusion: Building on our hypothesis that diverse applicants respond differently to specific strategies, GMaP Region 5 is implementing a number of diverse strategies to reach under-represented applicants. The results indicate that different applicants respond to different strategies. By offering diversity in our approach to engage potential K-series award applicants, Region 5 will contribute to the pool of successful under-represented minority early stage investigators who conduct scientifically sound cancer health disparities research. Abstract C05: Understanding the Mentoring Needs of Underrepresented Early Stage Investigators: Designing a responsive mentoring initiative

Abstract The Cancer Disparities Research Network (CDRN) is one of the NCI-funded Geographic Management Program (GMaP) regions which launched in 2009. Funded by the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), the coordinating office for the CDRN is located at Fox Chase Cancer Center and serves thirteen states including Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. CDRN has shown tremendous growth and ingenuity as it pursues the goals of both the overall GMaP Network and the interests of its regional membership. The goals of the CDRN focus on increasing disparities-related information dissemination and resource/best practice sharing within the region, sharing opportunities for underrepresented trainees/students and investigators to the biomedical cancer enterprise in support of increasing workforce diversity, fostering collaborations in cancer research/diversity training, and enhancing access of underrepresented investigators and trainees located within the region to career development and mentoring opportunities to enhance competitiveness. Utilizing the strengths of our diverse steering committee, CDRN developed a survey targeted at our cohort of early stage investigators who have participated in our Travel Scholarship program. (Total N = 25; Response Rate = 19, or 76%.) The purpose of the survey was to gain a better understanding of how the CDRN can support our early stage/junior investigator (ESI) community in their cancer research and health disparities related research and career development, with a focus on mentoring opportunities and gaps in current programs. The online survey contained 26 questions (5 demographic, 7 background, 14 mentoring/career development). Comments were anonymous, though twelve provided names. Respondents reported their multiple research areas, and the largest group was basic science 42%), followed by behavioral (37%) and translational (32%). Mentoring gaps included scientific (48%), career planning (31%) followed by works in progress, publications and cultural or gender specific (25%). All indicated that they were interested in mentorship and 84% said they would be interested in a CDRN sponsored 6 month program with a matched CDRN senior investigator (which might not be at their institution). Other CDRN activities that they found helpful were travel scholarships (84%), dissemination of funding opportunities (79%) and participation in CDRN activities (63%). In order to design a responsive and valued mentoring program these surveys results provide insights into the needs of our ESI in the CDRN network. We have developed a pilot mentoring program to match CDRN ESI's with senior investigators in our network for a 6 month contracted mentoring opportunity focused on their specific mentoring needs. The survey will also be distributed to a larger cohort of ESI's in the CDRN network this summer to further refine the mentoring program and expand it to other ESI's in our network. Abstract A16: Impact of targeted communications within a National Cancer Institute Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities Geographical Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program Regional Network

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of the Geographical Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) regional networks is to establish a multi-institutional framework to support and expand research and training of cancer health disparities researchers and trainees to reduce cancer-related health disparities. This study examined the efficacy of communication strategies within GMaP Regions 1 and 2 (R1R2) to improve uptake of communication and dissemination of jobs, training, fellowship, and collaboration opportunities over a two year period. Background: An unequal burden of cancer among population groups exists in the United States. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines cancer health disparities as “adverse differences in cancer incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, survivorship, and burden of cancer or related health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States.” Collaborative efforts across institutions within geographic regions have been limited despite previous efforts. Therefore, NCI's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) created GMaP, which consists of five hubs throughout the U.S. to increase collaborative efforts to reduce cancer health disparities intra- and inter-regionally. GMaP R1R2 includes 11 Eastern states and the District of Columbia. Members of GMaP R1R2 identified the need for an improved infrastructure to streamline program communications and facilitate collaborative efforts across a large membership group within R1R2. Methods: A communications strategy was developed to improve efficiency and measure uptake. GMaP R1R2 launched an online platform including a Google® website that integrated social media, Google® applications, infographics and additional media channels for broader dissemination efforts. Google+ Circle®, Twitter®, and Facebook® accounts were created for R1R2. MailChimp® was selected for newsletter distribution replacing ineffective email communications to investigators of all career levels. Results: Built-in analytics for each platform reflected uptake, which informed Program and Regional coordinator efforts. The GMaP R1R2 Google+ Circle® recruited 129 members and its Google® website averaged 1807 page views. MailChimp® includes an average of 920 subscribers. These members are grouped into 3 different listservs including GMaP R1/R2 Overall Group Email, Trainee's E-Blast, and Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) E-Blast. GMaP R1/R2 Group has an average open rate of 24.16%. The Trainee's E-blast group has an average open rate of 36.49%. The majority of these recipients viewed job and training opportunities, CRCHD Funding for Research and Training, and Funding Opportunities posted on the GMaP R1R2 website. The MSI list was created to recruit CURE trainees from minority serving institutes and had an average open rate of 20.87%. The MSI E-Blast revealed that information about CURE, Job/Training opportunities, CRCHD Funding for Research and Training, and Funding opportunities links were the most viewed (“clicks”) of the MailChimp® newsletter. Conclusion: Improved communication and dissemination efforts were realized through the use of electronic media tools to address cancer-related health disparities by GMaP R1R2. Regional Coordinators cite that analytics reports provide valuable information for future communications and online development efforts. Additional research is needed to poll GMaP R1R2 listserv members to learn about the usefulness of this communications platform, the preferred method of social media communication among GMaP R1R2 network members and how to increase their contribution to the current platform for broader dissemination.
