Four types of cellular manufacturing were examined on their requirements in product characteristics, i.e., yatai, rotating seru, divisional seru, and cellular manufacturing with group technology. Their corresponding relationships with two types of product architecture were studied, an integral product architecture and a modular product architecture. 81 cases on the application of cellular manufacturing were collected. The results show that comparing with the integral product architecture, the products with a modular architecture may have the higher possibility to be applied with seru production. The results can give some suggestions on the application of seru production.
