Effect of TX-100 on solubilizing power of CTAB and CPC for H Acid: An experimental and computational analysis

The present research work investigates the solubility of an anionic dye 8-amino-1-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid (H Acid) within the micellar mediaof two cationic surfactants cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as well as in the mixed micellar mediaof each cationic surfactant with Triton X-100 (TX-100). The data from differential absorption spectroscopy across a concentration range spanning from pre-micellar to post-micellar regions was used to determine the degree of solubilization by calculating the partition coefficient (Kx), binding constant (Kb) and Gibbs free energy associated with the relevant processes. Electrical conductivity of each cationic surfactant in the presence of H Acid was recorded in aqueous media and used to determine the CMC and subsequent thermodynamic parameters including entropy (ΔSm), enthalpy (ΔHm) and Gibbs free energy change (ΔGm) associated with the process of micellization. The computational analysis was carried out with GAUSSIAN 09 using a 6-311G + basis set with a DFT/ B3LYP hybrid approach and each set of energy minimization was executed to perform frequency calculations for Frontier molecular orbital analysis and to evaluate absorption spectra. Moreover, the molecular electrostatic potential surfaces (MESP) were also computed to find their suitable hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions.

Formation of vesicles between negatively charged carbon quantum dots and cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) due to oxidative photo induced electron transfer

The tuning of photo physical properties of highly emissive carbon quantum dots which was synthesized from citric acid in DMF medium through solvothermal method is investigated inside micelles formed by different types of surfactants like cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and neutral surfactant polyethylene glycol tert-octyl phenyl ether (TX100), polyoxoethylene lauryl ether (BRIJ-35). Interestingly, only CPC interacts with greater extent and formed co-assembly with negatively-charged carbon quantum dots (CQDs) whereas other surfactants like CTAB, SDS, TX100 and BRIJ-35 do not alter the fluorescence intensity extensively. This results in the formation of a non fluorescent vesicle. No phase separation was observed over the large concentration barrier of the CPC surfactant. However, no such vesicle formation takes place for another cationic surfactant CTAB excluding the role of only electrostatic interaction. The synthesized vesicle is characterized by various techniques including HRTEM, DLS. For the aqueous solution of CQDs having concentration of 0.5 mg/ml, addition of CPC leads to formation of different sized vesicles of size 40 nm to 100 nm. The driving force behind this formation of non-fluorescent vesicles is oxidative photo induced electron transfer which is revealed by the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) –lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) interaction between the donor (CQDs) and the acceptor (CPC). We trust such type vesicle can be a suitable alternative for drug carriers, biomarkers and other various applications also.

Comparative Study of Protection Efficiency of C-Steel Using Polystyrene Clay Nanocomposite Coating Prepared from Commercial Indian Clay and Local Khulays Clay

This work aimed to compare the coating protection efficiency of C-steel using two kinds of clay: a local Khulays clay (RCKh) from Saudi Arabia and a commercial clay (CCIn) from India. Clay-based polymer nanocomposites have a unique layered structure, rich intercalation chemistry, and availability at low cost. They are promising reinforcements for polymers. The raw clay for both clay types was washed before being treated with NaCl to produce sodium clay (NaC). The cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) was then used to convert the NaC into the organoclay (OC) form. Polystyrene/organoclay nanocomposites (PCNs) were prepared by combining different concentrations of organoclay (1%, 3%, and 5% OC) in toluene solvent and polystyrene (PS) as the matrix. To ensure the success of the PCN modification process, the organoclay and PCN films were characterized using a variety of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The shifts in the FT-IR spectra after the CPC treatment of NaC confirmed the presence of CPC in the organoclay samples and the presence of OC in the PCNs. The exfoliated structure was obtained from the XRD spectrum for low clay loading (1–3% PCN), while the intercalated structure was the dominant form for the 5% PCN. The XRD results were confirmed by TEM images. To calculate the coating efficiency of the PCNs, various electrochemical methods were used. The electrochemical measurements included electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) method, and Tafel plots. The PCN with a concentration of 1 wt.% OC has a fully exfoliated structure and higher coating efficiency than the PCNs with partially exfoliated structures (3 wt.% and 5 wt.%). It was found from the Tafel plots that commercial Indian clay has better corrosion protection (81.4%) than local Khulays clay (60.2%). A comparison with other studies using current density values shows that our results are superior to those of many studies.

Micelle formation and physico-chemical variables for the sodium dodecyl sulfate/cetylpyridinium chloride and their mixture in aqueous propranolol hydrochloride drug solvent: Conductivity and theoretical analysis

Herein, study of both single and mixed micelle development of an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in propranolol hydrochloride (PPH) drug medium has been performed using a conductometric technique at different temperatures and compositions. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) along with degree of ionization (g) were assessed from the specific conductivity (κ) versus [surfactant] plots. Within the concentration of surfactant studied, a single CMC was achieved in the situations of pure and mixed surfactant micellization. The CMC and g values have been noticed reliant on the employed drug concentrations, variations of mole fractions of the mixture of surfactants and experimental temperature. For the micellization of single SDS/ CPC surfactants in aq. PPH drug medium, PPH drug causes delayed micelle development which has been detected as the upsurge of CMC values of SDS/CPC in PPH drug media. For the association of SDS/ CPC surfactants in aq. PPH drug medium, the CMC values experienced a lessening with the growth of study temperature. At a fixed temperature, the experimental CMC values, of the SDS + CPC mixture, endure a decline through the upsurge of mole fractions of CPC (α1), attain a minimum value and the CMC values tend to enhance at and above α1= 16.2 × 10-5. The ideal critical micelle concentrations (CMCid) are detected always as higher values than experimental CMC up to the α1= 10.8 × 10-5. The -β values and |β| > |ln(CMC1/ CMC2)| for the present study reveal that the interaction among the amphiphiles under analysis is synergistic. The negative free energy (-ΔGmO) of micellization were obtained throughout the study. The enthalpy (ΔHmO) and entropy (ΔSmO) of micellization reveal the presence of hydrophobic interaction as the principal type of interaction among the studied constituents. The negative excess free energy (ΔGex) values inferred that stable mixed micelles are formed for the mixture of SDS + CPC in aq. PPH drug medium. The micellar mole fractions (both experimental and ideal values), activity coefficients of components in mixed micelles as well as enthalpy–entropy compensation parameters were also measured and illustrated. It is possible that the knowledge gained from the current analysis may be used to enhance pharmaceutical formulations, drug delivery carriers, along with drug act proficiency.

Reduction-triggered Disassembly of Organic Cationic Nanorods Produces a Cysteine Protease Mimic (Miravet et al.).

The emergence of catalytic activity associated with a disassembly process is reported, reminiscent of complex biological systems. A cystine derivative with pendant imidazole groups self-assembles into cationic nanorods in the presence of the cationic surfactants cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Disulfide reduction triggers nanorod disassembly and the generation of a simple cysteine protease mimic, which shows a dramatically improved catalytic efficiency in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate (PNPA).

High-efficient removal of tetrabromobisphenol A from waste mobile phone printed circuit boards leached solution by micellar enhanced ultrafiltration

Background: Tetrabrombisphenol A (TBBPA) is one of the major brominated flame retardants (BFRs) used in waste mobile phone printed circuit boards (WMPPCB) that accounts for approximately 60% of the total BFR market. Methods: The potential of TBBPA removal from WMPPCB leached solution was investigated using micelle-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) in the presence of cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants. The efficiency of several parameters including surfactant concentration, transmembrane pressure (TMP), pH, and TBBPA concentration, was evaluated to improve the MEUF. The optimal conditions were used to assess the MEUF for removing TBBPA in a real sample. Results: The cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) showed better performance than other surfactants in removing TBBPA due to its electrostatic interactions with anionic forms of TBBPA. The removal efficiency of TBBPA increased from 48.99% to 99.10% by adding a surfactant (less than the critical micelle concentration). Increasing the pH in the range of 5 to 11 increased the efficiency of TBBPA removal due to the increase in the TBBPA solubility in the micelles. TMP had the most significant effect on permeate flux compared to other parameters but did not significantly affect the TBBPA removal efficiency. The MEUF process effectively removed (above 99%) TBBPA in the concentration range of 20 to 80 mg L-1 under optimal conditions. The HPLC-UV analysis of the real sample indicated the removal efficiency of 100% of TBBPA. Conclusion: MEUF using CPC is a critical performance technology for removing TBBPA from the leached solution of electronic waste.

Investigating the morphological transitions in an associative surfactant ternary system.

Associative surfactants systems involving polar oils have recently been shown to stabilize immiscible liquids by forming nanostructures at the liquid interface and have been used to print soft materials. Although these associating surfactant systems show great promise for creating nanostructured soft materials, a fundamental understanding of the self-assembly process is still unknown. In this study, a ternary phase diagram for a system of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate (CPCl), a polar oil (oleic acid), and water is established using experiment and simulation, to study the equilibrium phase behavior. A combination of visual inspection, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheological measurements was employed to establish the phase behavior and properties of the self-assembled materials. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is used to simulate the formation of the morphologies in this system and support the experimental results. The ternary phase diagram obtained from the simulations agrees with the experimental results, indicating the robustness of the computational simulation as a supplement to the mesoscale experimental systems. We observe that morphological transitions (e.g., micelle-to-bilayer and vesicle-to-lamellar) are in agreement between experiments and simulations across the ternary diagram. DPD simulations correctly predict that associative surfactant systems form new nanoscale phases due to the co-assembly of the components. The established ternary phase diagram and the DPD model pave the way towards predicting and controlling the formation of different mesostructures like lamellar or vesicles, opening new avenues to tailor and synthesize desired morphologies for applications related to liquid-in-liquid 3D printing.

Voltammetric Behavior of Acidic Catecholamine Metabolites in Presence of Cationic Surfactants

The voltammetric behavior of two acidic catecholamine metabolites, vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in the presence of cationic, anionic, or nonionic surfactants was monitored at the disposable screen-printed electrodes. In basic medium above their pKa values, the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) enhanced the oxidation peak current based on electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with the ionized carboxylic group and stabilization of some of the electrochemical reaction intermediates. Under the optimum measuring conditions at pH 9.5, calibration graphs were linear within HVA concentration range from 0.25 to 2.5 × 10−6 mol l−1 and LOD 0.021 × 10−6 mol l−1. Simultaneous assay of HVA in the presence of VMA within the submicromolar concentration range can be performed with acceptable average recovery of 106.0 ± 3.4%. This preliminary study represents the base for simultaneous quantification of both compounds in of urine samples for Neuroblastoma diagnosis.

Influence of some added electrolytes on the surface and thermodynamic propertiesof cetylpyridinium chloride in aqueous medium

The effect of some added electrolytes, viz. NaCl, CaCl2 and AlCl3, on the critical micelle concentration (CMC),maximum surface excess concentration (Γmax) and minimum area per molecule (Amin) at air-liquid interface of a cationicsurfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in aqueous solutions have been studied at 288.15, 293.15 and 298.15 K usingtensiometric method. The effect of an added electrolyte on decreasing CMC of CPC is found to be in the order (AlCl3) >(CaCl2) > (NaCl), which falls in the same order as of the moles chloride ions furnished by each mole of the addedelectrolyte. The Γmax decreases with increasing temperature and electrolyte concentration leading to an enhanced availablearea per molecule at the air-liquid interface. The process of micellization and adsorption of CPC at air-liquid interface areboth favoured by exothermic enthalpy change as well as entropy gain. The observed features such as lowering of CMC,higher thermodynamic micellar stability, more relaxed surfactant molecules at the interface, due to an added electrolyte,may be exploited for improving the efficiency of the surfactant as a detergent, solubilizing agent, froth floatation process forconcentrating ores, petroleum oil recovery and oil spill management.

Effect of temperature and composition of mixed solvent media on the interaction of bromocresol Green dye with cetylpyridinium chloride

The study of dye-surfactant interaction is very important in achieving an optimal dyeing process in textile industries. Conductivity measurements of the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in the presence of bromocresol green dye (BCG) in various solvents were performed, in order to provide insight into the interaction between BCG and CPC. Three critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were observed over the studied CPC concentration range. The observed cmc values of the BCG + CPC system were found to change significantly as a function of BCG concentration. The cmc values of the BCG + CPC system showed U-shaped variation, with increasing temperature in aqueous and propanol media, while decreasing monotonically in ethanol media. The concentration of additives (ethanol, propanol, and propylene glycol) also affected the cmc values significantly. The values of counterion binding (β) were also found to be dependent on the temperature and concentration of additives. Different thermodynamic parameters, e.g. Gibbs free energy (), enthalpy (), and entropy () changes, as well as their transfer properties associated with micellization of the BCG + CPC system, were determined. The ΔH o m and ΔS o m values reveal the presence of hydrophobic, ion-dipole, or dipole-diploe interactions amongst employed constituents.

Synthesis of Different Ligand Complex Mo (VI) with Stillbazo and Cetylpyridinium Chloride

The complex of molybdenum (VI) with stilbene-2,2’-disulfonic acid-4,4’’bis (azo-1’’)-3’’, 4’’ dioxybenzene (stillbazo) in the presence of a cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPCl) was studied spectrophotometrically. It was found that in the presence of CPCl, a mixed-ligand complex with a component ratio of 1:2:4 is formed. The effect of pH, time, temperature, the concentration of reagents, and CPCl in the formation of homogeneous ligand and mixed-ligand complexes were studied. The stability constants (lgβk = 86 × 108) and the molar absorption coefficient of the mixed-ligand complex (εк = 11,835) were determined. It was found that Beer’s law is observed at a concentration of 0.05 - 17.00 μg/ml. A method has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of molybdenum (VI) in complex industrial facilities.

Oxidative stress in benthic oligochaete worm, Tubifex tubifex induced by sublethal exposure to a cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride and an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate

The present study was assessed to determine the in vivo toxic effects of a cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in terms of oxidative stress biomarkers in benthic oligochaete worm Tubifex tubifex for 14 days. The investigation demonstrated that sublethal concentrations of CPC (0.0213, and 0.0639 mg L−1) and SDS (1.094 and 3.092 mg L−1)induced paramount alterations in the oxidative stress enzymes in Tubifex tubifex. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), reduced glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) exhibited an initial notable increase in their activities in the surfactants exposed worms at 1d and 7d of exposure period followed by consequential reduction at 14d exposure period with respect to control, while catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) activities markedly incremented gradually throughout the exposure periods. Through the construction of the correlation matrix and integrated biomarker response (IBR), the effects of CPC and SDS on Tubifex tubifex were distinguished. These results indicate that exposure to these cationic and anionic surfactants modulates the levels of oxidative stress enzymes in Tubifex tubifex.

Investigation of ordered mesh phases using their detailed reconstructed electron density maps

We presently studied the ordered mesh phases observed in the aqueous solution of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in the presence of strongly binding counterion 2-sodium-3-hydroxy naphthoate (SHN). Reconstructed electron maps of the ordered mesh phases which were lacking in the previous studies are now the prime focus of this present report. The Reconstructed electron maps in 3D and 2D have been reconstructed from X-ray diffraction patterns of the ordered mesh phases, Rh and T, using information of the intensities and indexing of the diffraction peaks. The 3D reconstructed electron density maps indicate the layered structure of the Rh and T phases whereas 2D reconstructed electron density maps exhibit well organized pore like structure in each layer of the Rh and T phases. Our results show that the size of amphiphile, CPC, in Rh and T phases is 22.39 ± 0.37 Å and 20.79 ± 0.34 Å, respectively. And also exhibit that about 89.68 ± 3.66% of water volume is in the pores of the T phase whereas only 69.97 ± 2.85% of water volume is in the pores of Rh phase.

Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide Loaded Aligned Carbon Nanotube Layer Used as Counter Electrode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

A novel bilayer counter electrodes for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) made of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and aligned carbon nanotube (ACNT) was developed. The underlayer ACNT severs as a transition layer for RGO. The overlayer of RGO plays the role of catalytic layer. It was demonstrated that the property of graphene counter electrode was adversely affected by aggregation, by adding surfactant, the aggregation of graphene can be inhabited effectively. Moreover, the interface between the RGO and the ACNT can be optimized by surfactant functionalization of RGO. After screening, a cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) functionalized RGO, code as CPC-RGO, exhibits the best performance. Compare to the ACNT based counter electrode and other surfactant functionalized RGO/ACNT based bilayer counter electrodes, the CPC-RGO/ACNT reduced interface resistance and improved the double chemical capacitance efficiently, thus uplifting the short circuit current density and fill factor from 7.35 to 8.8 mA cm-2, and 59.87 to 62.79, respectively. Eventually, the CPC-RGO/ACNT based DSSC giving a power conversion efficiency of 3.9%, which is 1.24-fold than that of ANCT based DSSC, because of the best splay degree of CPC/RGO.

Removal of emerging contaminants from water by zeolite-rich composites: A first approach aiming at diclofenac and ketoprofen

Abstract In this study, composites of the natural zeolites and cationic surfactants cetylpyridinium chloride and Arquad® 2HT-75 were used for removal of two emerging contaminants – diclofenac sodium and ketoprofen. Modifying a clinoptilolite- and a phillipsite-rich tuff, with surfactants with one or two hydrophobic tails, resulted in composites in monolayer and bilayer forms. The intention was to better evaluate interactions of composites with selected molecules. Starting materials and composites were characterized by ATR–FTIR and STA coupled with EGA. The adsorption capacities of the prepared sorbents were estimated by determination of adsorption isotherms and kinetic runs. Maximum adsorption capacity, obtained from the Langmuir model, showed that the best results were for the bilayer form of the composites up to 35 mg/g. Between the two surfactants, composites with cetylpyridinium chloride gave better results. Zeta potential measurements showed that the surfactants turned out to be unstable on the zeolite surface, the only exception being bilayers prepared using the two-tailed surfactant Arquad® 2HT-75. These results suggested possible applications of these composites for water treatment purposes.

АНАЛІЗ АМІННИХ ЗАТВЕРДЖУВАЧІВ КЛЕЮ МЕТОДОМ рН-МЕТРИЧНОГО ТИТРУВАННЯ В СЕРЕДОВИЩІ МІЦЕЛ ДОДЕЦИЛСУЛЬФАТУ НАТРІЮ

One of the primary tasks in the development of amine hardeners for adhesive and epoxy resins is the control of amino group quantities in their composition. The main parameter that indicates the rate of the polymerization reaction and characterizes the quality of the hardener is the amine number. It is determined by the number of primary and secondary amino groups contained in the hardener molecule, because these functional groups are involved in reactions with epoxy resins. The most common methods of analysis of amine hardeners are mainly based on titration in organic solvents and require a procedure of derivatization of primary and secondary amino groups using formaldehyde and acetic anhydride. The search for a simple, cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to such titrimetric methods is still ongoing. In this paper on the example of industrial samples of polyamide PO-300, polyethylene polyamine (PEPA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) shows the prospects of using the method of pH-metric titration in water-micellar medium of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) to determine the content of primary and secondary amino groups in the adhesive hardeners. According to the developed techniques, working solutions of PO-300, PEPA and DETA were prepared by dissolving their exact mass in 20 ml of 2.0 M SDS solution. The values of PO-300, PEPA and DETA samples were 0.1040 g, 0.0225 g and 0,0200 g, respectively. Titration of the obtained solutions was performed with 0.05 M HCl solution. The percentage of primary amino groups, calculated on the basis of the obtained differential titration curves, is equal to 5,56% for PO-300, 23,6% for PEPA and 31,6% for DETA. The content of secondary amino groups in PO-300, PEPA and DETA samples is 3,03%, 15,0% and 19,6%. Founded amine number for PO-300, PEPA and DETA is well correlated with data declared by the manufacturer and equals to 302, 1381 and 1890, respectively. Unfortunately, it was not possible to establish the presence and quantity of tertiary amino groups in the samples of adhesive hardeners by this technique. The effect of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride, nonionic Triton X-100 and anionic surfactant SDS on the value of the pH jump of diethylenetriamine (DETA) was also studied. It was found that anionic SDS has the greatest differentiating effect on the acid-base properties of amino groups DETA in comparison with other studied surfactants. At that, the primary amino groups are titrated in the first place.

The effect of cationic, anionic and nonionic surfactants on the fluorescence properties of fluorescein and eosin Y aqueous solutions has been investigated. It has been found that sodium dodecyl sulfate does not affect the position of the maximum wavelengths of solutions of fluorescein and eosin Y in the study of the effect of an anionic surfactant on the fluorescence emission intensity of dyes. The intensity of the signal of the dye solutions when changing the concentration of anionic surfactant changes little. As the concentration of non-ionic surfactant increases, the fluorescence emission intensity of the fluorescein solutions decreases. In contrast, with increasing concentration of Triton X-100, there is an increase in the signal intensity of solutions of more hydrophobic eosin Y with subsequent access to the "plateau" at СТХ-100≥5.1·10–2 mol/L. The position of the maxima fluorescence emission wavelengths for the fluorescein solutions in the 0-1.0·10–5 mol/L range of concentrations of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride remain unchanged. The position of the maxima shifts to the long-wavelength region of the spectrum at higher concentrations of CPC. The nature of the position dependence of the fluorescence emission maxima of eosin Y solutions in the presence of cationic surfactants is similar. The effect of fluorescence quenching has also been shown in the study of the influence of organic substances of cationic nature on the signal intensity of fluorescein solutions. It has been shown that the concentration dependence is linear in the (0.1–4.0)·10–1 mol/L range of isoniazid molecule concentrations. The data obtained can be implemented in the development of conditions and methods for the determination of pharmacologically active substances of cationic nature by reaction with fluorescein in medicines.

A Novel Adsorbent Albite Modified with Cetylpyridinium Chloride for Efficient Removal of Zearalenone.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a non-steroidal estrogenic mycotoxin and constitutes a potential health threat to humans and livestock. This study aimed to explore the potential of albite modified by the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as ZEN adsorbent. The organoalbite (OA) was characterized by SEM analysis, XRD analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and BET gas sorption measurement. In vitro adsorption of ZEN by OA was carried out by simulating the pH conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The characterization results showed that the surface of OA changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic after modification. Adsorption kinetic studies showed that ZEN adsorption behavior of OA occurred by chemisorption. The equilibrium adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating that the adsorption process of ZEN by OA was monolayer. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) values of OA for ZEN were 10.580 and 9.287 mg/g at pH 7 and pH 3, respectively. In addition, OA had a low desorption rate (about 2%), and co-existing amino acids (i.e., Lys and Met), vitamins (i.e., VB1 and VE), and minerals (i.e., Fe2+ and Ca2+) did not affect the removal of ZEN. These results demonstrate that OA could be a promising mycotoxin adsorbent for removing the hydrophobic, weakly polar ZEN.

Synthesis, Surface and Antimicrobial Activity of New Lactose-Based Surfactants.

This work presents a synthesis method for new surfactants based on lactose. The compounds obtained belong to the homologous series of O-β-D-Galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-N-alkyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-D-glucosamine hydrochloride, containing 12 and 14 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, and they may serve as an example of cationic surfactants. The newly synthesized compounds exhibit good surface properties, low value of CMC (Critical Micelle Concentration) and good wetting properties. These surfactants’ ability to produce foam is considerably higher than in the commercial surfactants. Moreover, antibacterial and fungistatic activity was carried out by well diffusion assay against the selected bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), yeasts (Candida albicans) and filamentous fungi (Fusarium graminearum, F. avenaceum, F. oxysporum, F. culmorum, F. equiseti, Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea). It was shown that the resulting quaternary salts significantly inhibit the growth of tested microorganisms. Antibacterial and fungistatic activity of the surfactant compounds varied depending on the species of bacteria or fungi. The results of antimicrobial activity of new lactose derivatives indicate that the compounds exhibit larger or similar antagonistic activity against tested bacteria and fungi than typical cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride.

Sorbent-modified biodegradation studies of the biocidal cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride

Biodegradability studies for the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are hampered by inhibitory effects on inoculum at prescribed test concentrations (10–20 mg organic carbon/L). In this study, we used 14C labeled CPC in the 28 d Headspace Test (OECD 310) and demonstrated that CPC was readily biodegradable (10->60% mineralization within a 10 day window) at test concentrations 0.006–0.3 mg/L with CPC as single substrate. Biodegradation efficiency was comparable over this concentration range. CPC inhibited degradation at 1 mg/L and completely suppressed inoculum activity at 3 mg/L. In an extensive sorbent modified biodegradation study we evaluated the balance between CPC bioaccessibility and toxicity. A non-inhibitory concentration of 0.1 mg/L CPC was readily biodegradable with 83% sorbed to SiO2, while biodegradation was slower when 96% was sorbed. SiO2 mitigated inhibitory effects of 1 mg/L CPC, reaching >60% biodegradation within 28 d; inhibitory effects were also mitigated by addition of commercial clay powder (illite) but this was primarily reflected by a reduced lag phase. At 10 mg/L CPC SiO2 was still able to mitigate inhibitory effects, but bioaccessibility seemed limited as only 20% biodegradation was reached. Illite limited bioaccessibility more strongly and was not able to sustain biodegradation at 10 mg/L CPC.
