Carbonized cellulose microspheres loaded with Pd NPs as catalyst in p-nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction

Catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol is usually carried out using transition metal nanoparticles such as gold, palladium, silver, and copper, especially palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs), which are characterized by fast reaction rate, high turnover frequency, good selectivity, and high yield. However, the aggregation and precipitation of the metals lead to the decomposition of the catalyst, which results in a significant reduction of the catalytic activity. Therefore, the preparation of homogeneous stabilized palladium nanoparticles catalysts has been widely studied. Stabilized palladium nanoparticles mainly use synthetic polymers. Cellulose microspheres, as a natural polymer material with low-cost and porous fiber network structure, are excellent carriers for stabilizing metal nanoparticles. Cellulose microspheres impregnated with palladium metal nanoparticles were carbonized to have a larger specific surface area and highly dispersed palladium nanoparticles, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol. In this work, the cellulose carbon-based microspheres palladium (Pd@CCM) catalysts were designed and characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, XPS, TGA, BET, and so on. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Pd@CCM catalysts was investigated via p-nitrophenol reduction, which showed high catalytic activity. This catalyst also exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Linking aromatic monomer and benzene through Suzuki-Miyaura coupling was presented as an effective route to obtaining biaryls, and the synthesis method is low-cost and simple. In addition, Pd@CCM showed desirable recyclability while maintaining its catalytic activity even after five recycles. This work is highly suggestive of the design and application of the heterogeneous catalyst.

Titania-carbon amalgamated nickel and copper layered double hydroxide for dye removal and catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol

An economical and environmentally beneficial route for removing acid red 1 dye (A.R.) is titania‑carbon amalgamated nickel and copper layered double hydroxide, which is an efficient, and sustainable adsorbent. The utilized composite adsorbent consisting of layered double hydroxide (LDH) films with Ni and Cu, as well as TiO2-C have been fabricated to remove acid red 1 and develop a sustainable environmentally friendly way to convert p-nitrophenol into p-aminophenol. Miscellaneous characterization approaches were employed to examine the morphology, structure, and surface area of the synthesized composites. This study used a batch adsorption approach, which involved adjusting several factors, including adsorbent dosage, pH, and effect of co-existing inorganic materials. XRD, and FTIR characterization before and after adsorption showed robustness of the structure of the nanocomposite. The XPS analysis of TiO2-C@NiLDH and TiO2-C@CuLDH following the adsorption of A.R. revealed that the dye's shielding effect on the metal ions was the primary factor influencing the adsorption, rather than the degradation of the dyes. Moreover, the utilized nanocomposites exhibited an efficient catalytic activity for the conversion of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol using a hydrogen donor. Our findings exhibit that the LDH/TiO2-C hybrid with Ni demonstrates great stability even after being reused six times, and the suggested reaction mechanism has been documented.

Nickel foam supported non-noble Co3O4 as monolithic membrane catalyst for the reduction of p-nitrophenol

Catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) into p-aminophenol (PAP) is regarded as an effective detoxification approach. However, high cost and difficulty in recycling of the powdery noble metal catalyst limit the practicality of this method to a great extent. Hence, the development of non-noble metal catalysts with easy recovery nature is very desirable. In this study, we prepared a Co3O4@nickel foam (NF) monolithic membrane catalyst by coating Co3O4 onto nickel foam via a hydrothermal-calcination method. Moreover, its catalytic performance towards PNP reduction was assessed in the presence of NaBH4. The results showed that a PNP reduction conversion of 87.61 % could be achieved within 25 min under the reaction conditions: two pieces of 3 × 3 cm2 Co3O4@NF, NaBH4 dosage of 0.02 mol L−1, PNP concentration of 0.108 mmol L−1, a total reaction volume of 500 mL and reaction temperature of 25 °C. Additionally, Co3O4@NF monolithic membrane exhibited stable catalytic performance. After 10 consecutive catalytic cycles, a PNP reduction conversion of more than 85 % could be maintained. Therefore, it is expected that such kind of NF supported non-noble Co3O4 monolithic membrane catalyst has promising applications in nitrophenol wastewater treatment.

CuO/TiO2/ZnO NPs Anchored Hydrogen Exfoliated Graphene: To Comprehend the Role of Graphene in Catalytic Reduction of p-Nitrophenol.

The present study deals with sonochemically in situ synthesis of a novel functional catalyst using hydrogen exfoliated graphene (HEG) supported titanium dioxide (TiO2) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) doped with zinc oxide (ZnO) (abbreviated as Ti/Cu/Zn-HEG). The synthesis of the Ti/Cu/Zn-HEG nanocomposite (NCs) catalyst was confirmed through its characterizations by XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, XPS, FTIR, and BET methods. It was assessed for catalytic conversion of a model aromatic compound para-nitrophenol (p-NP) in an aqueous solution. The p-NP is a nitroaromatic compound that has a toxic and mutagenic effect. Its removal from the water system is necessary to protect the environment and living being. The newly synthesized Ti/Cu/Zn-HEG NCs were applied for their higher stability and catalytic activity as a potential candidate for reducing p-NP in practice. The operating parameters, such as p-NP concentration, catalyst dosage, and operating time were optimized for 150 ppm, 400 ppm, and 10 min through response surface methodology (RSM) in Design-Expert software to obtain the maximum reduction p-NP up to 98.4% at its normal pH of 7.1 against the controls (using HEG, Ti/Cu-HEG, and Zn-HEG). Analysis of variance of the response suggested the regression equation to be significant for the process with a major impact on catalyst concentration and operating time. The model prediction data (from RSM) and experimental data were corroborated well as reflected through model's low relative error (RE < 0.10), high regression coefficient (R2 > 0.97), and Willmott d-index (dwill-index > 0.95) values.

Catalytic Reduction of p-Nitrophenol on MnO2/Zeolite -13X Prepared with Lawsonia inermis Extract as a Stabilizing and Capping Agent

p-nitrophenol (pNP) is a highly toxic organic compound and is considered carcinogenic and mutagenic. It is a very stable compound with high resistance to chemical or biological degradation. As a result, the elimination of this pollutant has been very challenging for many researchers. Catalytic reduction is one of the most promising techniques, if a suitable catalyst is developed. Thus, this work aims to prepare an eco-friendly catalyst via a simple and low-cost route and apply it for the conversion of the toxic p-nitrophenol (pNP) into a non-toxic p-aminophenol (pAP) that is widely used in industry. Manganese oxide was prepared in an environmentally friendly manner with the aid of Lawsonia inermis (henna) extract as a stabilizing and capping agent and loaded on the surface of 13X molecular sieve zeolite. The UV-Vis spectrum, EDS, and XRD patterns confirmed the formation of the pure MnO2 loaded on the zeolite crystalline network. The TGA analysis showed that the samples prepared by loading MnO2 on zeolite (Mn2Z, Mn3Z, and Mn4Z) lost more mass than pure MnO2 (Mn) or zeolite (Z), which is mainly moisture adsorbed on the surface. This indicates a better dispersion of MnO2 on the surface of zeolite compared to pure MnO2, and thus a higher number of active adsorption sites. SEM images and EDS confirmed the dispersion of the MnO2 on the surface of the zeolite. Results showed a very fast reduction rate, following the order Mn2Z > Mn3Z > Mn4Z > Mn > Z. With sample Mn2Z, 96% reduction of pNP was achieved in 9 min and 100% in 30 min. For Mn3Z, Mn4Z, and Mn, 98% reduction was achieved in 20 min and 100% in 30 min. Zeolite was the slowest, with only a 40% reduction in 30 min. Increasing the amount of zeolite in the synthesis mixture resulted in lower reduction efficiency. The kinetic study indicated that the reduction of p-nitrophenol on the surface of the prepared nanocomposite follows the pseudo-first-order model. The results show that the proposed nanocomposite is very effective and very promising to be commercially applied in water treatment, due to its low cost, simple synthesis procedure, and reusability.

High-Symmetry Co/Ni Triazine Polycarboxylate Diverse Frameworks Constructed by Mx(COO)y Building Blocks: Characterization and Catalytic Performance Evaluation of p-Nitrophenol.

Three new triazine compounds [Co1.5(H3TDPAT)(H2O)3]·6H2O (1), [Co2(TCPT)(μ2-H2O)2]·OH (2), and [Ni3(TCPT)]·3OH (3) were designed and synthesized via the reaction of the symmetrical triazine ligand connected by C-N-C and C-O-C bonds with triazine poly(carboxylic acid)s ligands as the side arms: H6TDPAT (H6TDPAT = 2,4,6-tris(3,5-dicarboxylphenylamino)-1,3,5-triazine) and H3TCPT (H3TCPT = 2,4,6-tris(4-carboxyphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine) as well as the corresponding metal salts under the solvothermal condition. Three triazine polycarboxylate frameworks were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and solid fluorescent spectra in detail. The structural analysis results showed that the three-dimensional porous cage framework of compound 1 was constructed by three different polyhedral cages connected with [Co(COO)4(H2O)2] building blocks. One of the compounds, 2, is formed by twin propeller Co2(μ2-H2O)(COO)3 building blocks connecting two-dimensional layers and the intermolecular π-π interactions involved the triazine rings between the layers. While the structure of compound 3 is similar to that of 2, assembly is by Ni(COO)3 building blocks and adjacent layers of the face-to-face π-π interaction between the triazine rings. In order to explore functional properties, the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) of compounds 1-3 was investigated. They exhibit excellent catalytic activity of more than 95% for reduction of PNP with a dose of 2.5 mg of the compounds.

A PtS QDs/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction catalyst for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production and reduction of p-nitrophenol

In this study, PtS QDs/ZnIn2S4 (PtS QDs/ZIS) composites were prepared, which can not only photocatalytically produce hydrogen, but also catalyze the reduction of organic pollutants. Photodeposition of PtS QDs on ZIS for simultaneous hydrogen evolution makes PtS QDs and ZIS form a closely contacted interface, accelerating the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. It obtained an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (20777.07 µmol‧g−1‧h−1) and the quantum efficiency at 430 nm was 13.25 %. Also, the amount of hydrogen evolution of PtS QDs/ZIS was linear with time during the 8 h continuous test. Subsequently, PtS QDs/ZIS also showed efficient catalytic performance in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP), which can reach 99.87 % at 7 min, so that it can quickly transfer electrons and can still maintain 95 % reduction after six cycles. One-step photodeposition of PtS QDs provides a new idea for photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting and catalytic reduction of pollutants.

Confinement of Au, Pd and Pt nanoparticle with reduced sizes: Significant improvement of dispersion degree and catalytic activity

Heterogeneous catalytic reactions are strongly relying on metal-based catalysts due to their outstanding activity. However, the activity of catalysts depends on the size of metal nanoparticles (MNPs). Herein, Pd, Pt and Au NPs were confined in the nanoconfined spaces of template occluded as-made KIT-6 (AK) via facile single-step strategy. The metal precursors are directly inserted into the nanoconfined channels of AK by grinding. Subsequent reduction removes template P123, decompose precursors and reduce MNPs in one step in comparison to multiple ones of traditional strategies. The results demonstrated that the nanoconfined channels between template and silica walls of AK where MNPs locate, MNPs interaction with AK and single-step strategy promote the formation of MNPs with smaller size. The characterization results confirmed uniform MNPs distribution with single metallic state without any metallic oxides. The smaller size of MNPs in catalysts endows excellent catalytic activity and the order of para-nitrophenol (p-NP) reduction to p-aminophenol (p-AP) and methylene blue (MB) to leucomethylene blue (LMB) is AK-Pd > AK-Pt > AK-Au. Also, the reaction rate constant of AK-Pd is much better than AK-Pt and AK-Au catalysts. Moreover, the synthesized catalysts exhibited good reusability and are highly promising for utilization in catalytic reactions. Formation of well-dispersive and small-size Pd (A), Pt (B) and Au (C) NPs in nanoconfinement of AK. • Development of highly dispersive Pd, Pt and Au NPs over KIT-6 via grinding strategy. • Template and silanols has been proved crucial for size regulation of Pd, Pt and Au NPs over KIT-6. • Fabrication of metal NPs over KIT-6 via present strategy save much time and energy. • Pd NPs are highly dispersed with smaller size over KIT-6 than Pt and Au NPs. • High performance of catalysts in catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol and methylene blue.

Controlled synthesis of α-Al2O3 supported Ag particles with tuning catalytic performance

Herein, α-Al2O3 supported Ag particles with controllable size distribution are prepared successfully by tuning of the calcination conditions through an impregnation method. The size of Ag particles could be adjusted by changing the calcination time and temperature. The catalyst samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other characterization methods under different calcination conditions, and the performance differences of their catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results show that the Ag particles with increased particle size can be obtained on the surface of α-Al2O3 support by increasing the calcination time or calcination temperature. The catalytic performance of the samples obtained by increasing the calcination time decreased, while the catalytic performance of the samples obtained by increasing the calcination temperature increased. This may be due to the interaction between Ag particles and the support, which changes the valence state of Ag species. Also the particle size effect acts on the catalyst and affects its catalytic performance together with the change of valence.

Noble metallic nanoparticles from waste Nypa fruticans fruit husk: Biosynthesis, characterization, antibacterial activity and recyclable catalysis

Biogenic synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles is particularly interested due to the effective applications for plasmonic catalysis and bioactivity. In this work, aqueous extract of waste Nypa fruticans (NF) fruit husk was utilized to synthesize silver nanoparticles (NF-AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (NF-AuNPs). The effected parameters on the green reduction of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) were investigated. Under optimum conditions of concentration, temperature and time, the biosynthesized NF-AgNPs and NF-AuNPs showed spherical nanoparticles with average size of 10–15 nm and 15–20 nm, respectively. The presence of AgCl in NF-AgNPs has been demonstrated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The elemental components of all samples confirmed the presence of anions and cations come from the aqueous extract. The biosynthesized nanoparticles were evaluated bacterial activity against three bacterial strains. NF-AgNPs exhibited selective antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus but no activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium at all tested concentrations. The recyclable catalysis activity of the biosynthesized nanoparticles was evaluated for the reduction of nitrophenols in the presence of sodium borohydride which possessed good catalytic performance in six running numbers. Additionally, AgCl played role as a source supplying AgNPs has been demonstrated in catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol. For study of catalytic kinetic, NF-AgNPs possessed higher rate constant in comparison with NF-AuNPs whereas TOF values of NF-AuNPs was determined to be higher than those of NF-AgNPs.

Hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of CuO–CoO/TiO2 for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light and catalytic reduction of P-nitrophenol

CuO–CoO/TiO2 has been prepared using TiO2-P-25, Cu(acac)2/Co(acac)3 (sample 1) and Cu(NO3)2/Co (NO3)2 (sample 2) by hydrothermal method. DRS, CV, EDX, XRD, XPS, Raman, FE-SEM, and TEM have been used for structural, optical, and morphological analyses of the samples. The anatase phase formation of the samples has been identified by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Cu and Co metals were present as CuO and CoO in both samples, according to XPS and Raman spectroscopy data. UV–Vis–NIR reflectance and cyclic voltammetry analysis were used to determine the absorption nature of the samples. Through these techniques, the band gap values of samples 1 and 2 were determined as 2.0 and 2.5 eV, respectively. Nanotube/nanosheet and nanoparticle morphologies were shown by samples 1 and 2, respectively, based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The synthesized nanomaterials were applied in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was studied in the presence and absence of H2O2. Degradation time was 4–40 min in the presence of 2 mg of the catalyst. In addition, the samples were used as catalysts in the reduction of P-nitrophenol (PNP) by NaBH4. UV–Vis spectroscopy was used to monitor the progress of the catalytic and photocatalytic degradation reactions. Furthermore, the catalyst samples were removed and recycled several times. The photocatalytic degradation reaction was carried out in the presence of various free radical scavengers and hydroxyl radical and hole were determined as the main active species for samples 1 and 2, respectively.

Can Plasmonic Effect Cause an Increase in the Catalytic Reduction of p-nitrophenol by Sodium Borohydride over Au Nanorods?

The catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) over Au nanoparticles can be increased by light illumination. Whether this is caused by the plasmonic effect remains unclear. The present research carried out a careful examination of the effects of light illumination and temperature on the catalytic conversion of 4-NP to 4-AP over Au nanorods. It was seen that light illumination has no effect on the apparent activation energy; this indicates that the catalytic mechanism is unchanged and the activity increase cannot be attributed to the effect of hot electrons. Based on the simulation of finite-difference time domain, the theoretical analysis also showed that plasmonic heating cannot play a major role. Thermographic mapping showed that the temperature of water solutions shows an increase under light illumination. By taking this temperature increase into consideration, the light-induced increase of the 4-NP to 4-AP conversion can agree well with dark catalysis, which cannot be attributed to the plasmonic effects of the Au nanorods.

Hydrazine-Enabled One-Step Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticle-Functionalized Gradient Porous Poly(ionic liquid) Membranes.

In this communication, a one-step synthetic route is reported toward free-standing metal-nanoparticle-functionalized gradient porous polyelectrolyte membranes (PPMs). The membranes are produced by soaking a glass-plate-supported blend film that consists of a hydrophobic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), poly(acrylic acid), and a metal salt, into an aqueous hydrazine solution. Upon diffusion of water and hydrazine molecules into the blend film, a phase separation process of the hydrophobic PIL and an ionic crosslinking reaction via interpolyelectrolyte complexation occur side by side to form the PPM. Simultaneously, due to the reductive nature of hydrazine, the metal salt inside the polymer blend film is reduced in situ by hydrazine into metal nanoparticles that anchor onto the PPM. The as-obtained hybrid porous membrane is proven functional in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol. This one-step method to grow metal nanoparticles and gradient porous membranes can simplify future fabrication processes of multifunctional PPMs.

Structural, Thermal, Morphological, Adsorption and Catalytic Properties of Poly(BPDAH-co-ODA/PPDA)-Ag/V2O5 Nanocomposites

Thermally stable polyimides (PIs) were prepared by condensation technique at 160 ºC for 5 hours in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) medium under N2 atmosphere both in the presence and absence of metal (Ag) and metaloxide (MO) (V2O5) nanoparticles (NPs). The synthesized polymers are characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray (FE-SEM and EDX). The FT-IR spectrum showed a peak at 1786 cm-1 corresponding to the C=O stretching of dianhydride. The aromatic proton signals appeared between 6.7 and 7.5 ppm in the 1H-NMR spectrum of the resultant PIs. The oxydianiline (ODA) based PI with Ag NP loaded system exhibited the highest Tg value. The apparent rate constant values for the adsorption and catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP), Cr6+ and rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye were determined with the help of UV-visible spectrophotometer. Among the catalysts, the system loaded with V2O5 NP has higher kapp values. The experimental results are critically analyzed and compared with the previously available literature values. Novel porous ceramic sheet supported metal reactors for continuous-flow catalysis

A novel porous ceramic sheet supported nickel particles reactor was obtained by an in-situ preparation method. This reactor was then used to investigate continuous-flow catalysis of nitroaromatic compounds and methyl orange. The details of the structure and morphology were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, Raman, element mapping, mercury intrusion method and Archimedes principle. The porous ceramic sheet supported Ni particles reactor exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol and methyl orange by sodium borohydride at room temperature. Both the conversion of p-nitrophenol (5 mM) and methyl orange (0.3 mM) reached nearly 100% at the injection speed of 2.67 mL·min−1. In addition, it maintained conversions of 100% after 10 recycling time since the porous ceramic sheet could reduce the aggregation for Ni particles. Furthermore, the chemisorbed oxygen, and the strong interaction between Ni and porous ceramic sheet resulted in a highly efficient, recoverable, and cost-effective multifunctional reactor. All of these advantages present new opportunities to be implemented in the field of waste water treatment and environmental toxicology. Ultimately, the porous ceramic sheet could also support other metal nanomaterial, and used in other fields of environmental catalysis.

Resource utilization of waste deNOx catalyst for continuous-flow catalysis by supported metal reactors

Resource utilization of waste deNOx catalysts has become a major demand. A new resource path for continuous-flow catalysis using the waste deNOx catalysts (V2O5-WO3/TiO2, CeO2-WO3/TiO2 and MnO2-CeO2/TiO2) as carriers was proposed. The waste deNOx catalysts supported NiO catalysts prepared by an in-situ preparation method were used to investigate continuous-flow nanocatalysis of p-nitrophenol reduction. The result showed that the MnO2-CeO2/TiO2 supported NiO (Ni/TMC) exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP). The conversion of 4-NP (2.5 mM) reached nearly 100% at the injection speed of 1.5 mL·min−1. It maintained 100% conversion after 10 recycling time since waste deNOx catalysts could reduce aggregation for NiNPs. Furthermore, high oxygen vacancy, chemisorbed oxygen, and the strong interaction between Ni and waste deNOx catalyst resulted in a highly efficient, recoverable and cost-effective multifunctional reactor. All of these advantages present the opportunity to be implemented in the field of wastewater treatment and environmental toxicology.

Synthesis, characterization and applications of nano-Ag-tagged poly(ε-caprolactone-block-tetrahydrofuran)

A diblock copolymer consists of e-caprolactone, and tetrahydrofuran was synthesized by using a novel natural amino acids such as penicillamine and tyrosine as a chemical initiator in the presence of stannous octoate as a catalyst through bulk polymerization method under nitrogen atmosphere with mild stirring condition. The synthesized diblock copolymer was treated with AgNO3 to form a nano-Ag-tagged diblock copolymer. The above-synthesized polymer systems were characterized by various analytical tools such as FTIR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, circular dichroism, gel permeation chromatography, FESEM, HRTEM, EDX, DSC and TGA. Its applications toward catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (NiP), wound healing activity and low-temperature splinting activity were tested. Due to the incorporation of poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF), the % elongation value of the diblock copolymer was increased but the DSC and TGA results showed depressed results. The HRTEM declared the size of Ag nanoparticle as < 50 nm. From the values of UV–visible absorbance, apparent rate constant (kapp) was determined and compared with the literature report.
