Catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol into propyl acetate with ruthenium complexes

Ru complexes have been utilized as catalyst precursors for glycerol hydrogenolysis under mild conditions, which gave propyl acetate (PA) as a major product. Notably, the esterification reaction of acetic acid with glycerol can prevent glycerol from polymerization. In(OTf)3 played a critical role in facilitating esterification of glycerol and sequential dehydration, while the Ru complexes' function was hydrogenation. The promoter (FeCl3) can suppress the reduction of Ru complex to Ru particles, improving the catalytic performance. The present catalytic system can give full glycerol conversion and 57% yield of PA. Finally, the reaction pathway was proposed accordingly.

Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to 1,2-Propanediol Over Clay Based Catalysts.

1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) is one of the promising product among the valuable products derived from glycerol and it can be obtained by the catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol. Copper-supported clay-based catalysts were prepared with different pore sizes using various ratios of kaolin, Mg, and Al by coprecipitation and applied in the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO. In recent research, variations of pore volume and pore size could affect the diffusion of reagents within the catalyst due to the collision between reagents or pore wall and reagents. It changes selectivities of each product in hydrogenolysis of glycerol reaction. The physico-chemical properties of the catalysts were analyzed by XRD, N2 physisorption, TPR, CO2-TPD, SEM, and a mercury porosimeter. The Cu/TALCITE 4 catalyst showed 98% 1,2-PDO selectivity with 65% glycerol conversion under the optimized condition of 190 degrees C, 25 bar, and 20 wt% glycerol aqueous solution. It was found that the basic strength and meso-macro pore structure of the catalysts play an important role in glycerol conversion and 1,2-PDO selectivity.

Hydrogenolysis of bioglycerol to 1,2-propanediol over Ru/CeO2 catalysts: influence of CeO2 characteristics on catalytic performance

Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol is an alternative route for efficient utilization of biomass-derived glycerol to value-added chemicals. In this study, catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol was systematically investigated over various Ru/CeO2 catalysts. CeO2-support was prepared by different methods and Ru deposition by wet impregnation method. Synthesized catalysts were characterized by various techniques, namely, XRD, XPS, TPR, TPD, and other. Hydrothermally synthesized CeO2-supported Ru catalyst showed relatively more number of acid sites with mild acid strength and exhibited highest conversion and product selectivity. Effect of various parameters including Ru loading, reaction temperature, and hydrogen pressure was evaluated and addressed.

Production of 1,3-Propanediol by Catalytic Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol

The market for 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is growing rapidly due to its expanding uses in the polymer material industry. Catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol is a promising new way to produce 1,3-PDO sustainably. This paper reviews the recent advances in studies on heterogeneous catalysts for the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-PDO. The main employed metal catalysts include platinum, copper, rhodium and iridium. With the intent to give a rationally guide to the development of new catalysts in future research, the catalysts performances are summarized and discussed with reaction mechanisms.
