Synthesis of titanium silicalite-1 supported zinc catalysts for efficient and clean epoxidation of 1-hexene and methyl oleate

To improve the catalytic epoxidation activity of conventional TS-1 zeolite under acid-free conditions, a series of TS-1-supported zinc (xZn/TS-1) catalysts were prepared and evaluated in the epoxidation of 1-hexene and methyl oleate (MO) with H2O2 oxidant. The microstructure of xZn/TS-1 was investigated using various characterization techniques, and the results showed that the introduction of Zn species was not only well dispersed on the surface of TS-1 but also did not disrupt the crystal structure of TS-1 and tetrahedral framework titanium. Furthermore, the Ti-O-Zn structure can be formed between Zn and Ti species through O-atomic coordination, which improves the vulnerability of the Ti-O bond to attack the H2O2 molecule, and ultimately facilitates the epoxidation reaction between 1-hexene and MO. In addition, the 2% Zn/TS-1 catalysts showed optimal conversions of 45.7 % and 75.41 % for 1-hexene and MO, respectively, and exhibited good catalytic stability and regeneration during the epoxidation process.

A novel mixed azido/phenoxido bridged 1D CuII coordination polymer containing o-vanillin-based compartmental ligand: Synthesis, magnetism, phenoxazinone synthase and catalytic activity in epoxidation of alkenes

A novel 1-D coordination polymer, formulated as [Cu2(L)(N3)3]·H2O (1), has been synthesized by reacting the Schiff base ligand, 2-methoxy-6-((2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethylimino) methyl)-phenol (HL), with copper(II) chloride dihydrate in the presence of sodium azide. The X-ray structural analysis shows that compound 1 consists of tetranuclear [Cu2(L)(N3)3]2 units bearing a central double asymmetric μ1,1-N3 bridge and terminal mixed µ1,1-N3/phenoxido bridges that are linked via a double µ1,1,3-N3 bridge forming a 1-D network. The magnetic properties of 1 show the presence of ferromagnetic Cu···Cu interactions through the central double μ1,1-N3 bridge (J1 = 81.7(3) cm−1) coexisting with antiferromagnetic Cu···Cu interactions through the double µ1,1-N3/phenoxido bridge (J2 = –62.3(4)cm−1). Additionally, there is a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction (zJ = –0.12(2) cm−1) through the asymmetric µ1,1,3-N3 bridge connecting the tetranuclear units. Using o-aminophenol (OAP) as a substrate, the phenoxazinone synthase-like catalytic activity of the CuII coordination polymer 1 has been studied. The compound efficiently catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of o-aminophenol in DMF medium with a turnover number Kcat = 31.69 h−1. Moreover, 1 has been used as an active catalyst for the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene, as a model alkene, with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), showing an excellent epoxide yield and selectivity in CHCl3 under reflux conditions. To enlarge the scope of the reaction, the efficacy of the catalytic method has also been investigated in the epoxidation of some other substituted alkenes.

The first macrocyclic abnormally coordinating tetra-1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene iron complex: a promising candidate for olefin epoxidation.

The first macrocyclic and abnormally coordinating, mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbene iron complex has been synthesised and characterised via ESI-MS, EA, SC-XRD, CV, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. 13C-NMR spectroscopy and CV measurements indicate a strong σ-donor ability of the carbene moieties, suggesting an efficient catalytic activity of the iron complex in oxidation reactions. Initial tests in the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene as a model substrate confirm this assumption.

Olefin epoxidation with ionic liquid catalysts formed by supramolecular interactions

This work demonstrated that the specific ionic liquids (ILs) have been designed via the supramolecular complexation between 18-crown-6 (CE) and ammonium peroxoniobate (NH4-Nb). The resultant ILs have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, Raman, NMR, DSC, conductivity measurement and MALDI-TOF, etc. The IL (CE-1) consisting of CE and ammonium peroxoniobate can be further coordinated with GLY to generate a new IL (CE-2), which showed both high catalytic activity in epoxidation with H2O2 and good recyclability. The characterization of 93Nb NMR spectra revealed that the peroxoniobate anions has demonstrated a structural evolution in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, in which NbO species can be easily oxidized into the catalytically active niobium−peroxo species. Especially, the supramolecular complexation can provide suitable hydrophobicity, which ensured that the hydrophobic olefins and allylic alcohols were easily accessible to the catalytically active anions, and thus facilitated the epoxidation reaction. Notably, the supramolecular IL catalysts in this work exhibited a huge advantage of the easy availability, as compared with the previously reported peroxoniobate-based ILs. As far as we know, this is the first example of the highly selective epoxidation of olefins and allylic alcohols by using supramolecular ILs as catalysts.

Ionic Liquids Based on Oxidoperoxido-Molybdenum(VI) Complexes with a Chelating Picolinate Ligand for Catalytic Epoxidation

Ionic oxidoperoxido-molybdenum(VI) complexes of the type [Cat][MoO(O2)2(pic)], with pic = N,O-chelated picolinate ligand and Cat = monocation, were prepared in high yields (82–95%) from the precursor complex [H3O][MoO(O2)2(pic)] via [H]+ cation exchange for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [EMIM]+, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [BMIM]+, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium [OMIM]+, N-cetylpyridinium [C16Py]+, and N-methyl-N,N,N-trioctylammonium [Aliquat]+. The structure and purity of the ionic compounds were assessed by 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis (C, H, N), and the electrochemical properties were studied by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The [Cat][MoO(O2)2(pic)] compounds showed promising catalytic epoxidation activity based on the model reaction of cis-cyclooctene with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant. The type of cation influenced the physical state of the compound and the catalytic performance.

Step-by-Step Assembly of 2D Confined Chiral Space Endowing Achiral Clusters with Asymmetric Catalytic Activity for Epoxidation of Allylic Alcohols.

Endowing achiral polyoxometalates (POMs) with asymmetric catalytic properties is always an intriguing but challenging topic because of their high catalytic activities yet highly symmetrical molecular structures. In this work, a novel strategy was proposed to fabricate a series of two-dimensional chiral POM catalysts. Following the steps of exfoliation, covalent modification, and reassembly, the achiral POMs were orderly confined into the chiral interstitial domains of chiral ionic liquid (CIL)-modified layered double hydroxide materials with a decreased molecular symmetry. The chirality of POM molecules was induced by the l- or d-pyrrolidine-type CILs, and their asymmetric catalytic activity was enhanced by the confinement effect. Compared with the reported chiral POM-based catalysts [e.g., 8 turnover frequency (TOF) and 79% enantiomeric excess (ee) for chiral POM-based metal-organic frameworks], the constructed chiral POM catalysts showed a significantly higher TOF and enantioselectivity (up to 240 TOF and 93% ee) for the asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols. The facilitated mass transfer in the IL channels and the increased binding efficiency between the chiral catalytic sites and reactants render this strategy highly promising for constructing efficient chiral catalysts from the catalytically active while achiral building blocks.

Isomers in chlorido and alkoxido-substituted oxidorhenium(v) complexes: effects on catalytic epoxidation activity.

The syntheses and characterizations of oxidorhenium(v) complexes trans-dichlorido [ReOCl2(PPh3)(L1a)] (trans-2a), cis-dichlorido [ReOCl2(PPh3)(L1b)] (cis-2b) and ethoxido-complex [ReO(OEt)(L1b)2] (4b), ligated with the dimethyloxazoline-phenol ligands HL1a and HL1b are described. The bidentate ligand HL1a (2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)-phenol) is unsubstituted on the phenol ring; ligand HL1b (2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)-4-nitrophenol) contains a nitro group in para-position to the hydroxy group. In the reaction of precursor complex [ReOCl3(PPh3)2] and HL1a the two stereoisomers cis/trans-2a, with respect to chlorido ligands, are formed. The solid state structures of both isomers cis- and trans-2a were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In contrast, with ligand HL1b, only the cis-isomer cis-2b was obtained. Ethoxido-complex 4b is exclusively obtained when precursor [ReOCl3(OPPh3)(SMe2)] is reacted with 2 equiv. of HL1b in ethanol in the presence of the base 2,6-dimethylpyridine (lutidine). If no lutidine is added, chlorido-complex [ReOCl(L1b)2] (3b) is obtained. Complexes [ReOCl2(PPh3)(L1a)] (cis/trans-2a), [ReOCl2(PPh3)(L1b)] (cis-2b), [ReO(OMe)(L1a)2] (4a) and [ReO(OEt)(L1b)2] (4b) were tested as homogeneous catalysts in the benchmark reaction of cyclooctene epoxidation. The influence of isomerism and effects of ligand substitutions on catalytic activity was investigated. Based on the time-conversion plots it can be concluded that cis/trans-isomerism does not influence catalytic activity, but electron-withdrawing substituents, as in cis-2b, 3b and 4b, show a beneficial effect.

Copper complex supported on hollow porous nanosphere frameworks with improved catalytic activity for epoxidation of olefins

Abstract An efficient heterogeneous catalyst has been synthesized by anchoring copper complex onto the salicylaldehyde-modified hollow porous nanosphere frameworks (SA-HPNFs-BA), in which SA-HPNFs were firstly prepared by using amino-functionalized HPNFs to react with salicylaldehyde. The final copper complex functionalized hollow porous nanosphere frameworks (Cu-HPNFs-BA) possess the high specific surface area, hierarchically micro-/mesoporous structure and robust organic frameworks. The prepared Cu-HPNFs-BA heterogeneous catalyst shows improved catalytic performance and good recycling stability in selective epoxidation of olefins.

Synthesis of dipyroromethanes in water and investigation of electronic and steric effects in efficiency of olefin epoxidation by sodium periodate catalyzed by manganese tetraaryl andtransdisubstituted porphyrin complexes

Condensation of pyrrole with various aldehydes in the presence of BF3•etherate as an acid catalyst in water provides good yield of some dipyrromethanes. Prolongation of the reaction time with aldehydes substituted by electron-donating (mesityl) or electron-withdrawing (2,6-dichlorophenyl) groups on the ortho positions of the phenyl did not lead to decomposition or scrambling. Manganese trans disubstituted porphyrin complexes which derive from various dipyrromethanes and manganese tetraaryl porphyrin complexes including various substituents with different steric and electronic properties show good catalytic activity in epoxidation of alkenes by NaIO4in the presence of imidazole (ImH). The study of steric and electronic effects of the catalysts on the epoxidation of olefins shows that Mn-porphyrin complexes with more bulky and electron-releasing groups on meso phenyls could increase the epoxidation yield of most alkenes.

Candida rugosa lipase immobilized on functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a sustainable catalyst for production of natural epoxides

In this work, lipase from Candida rugosa was bound with the multi-covalent bonds attachment to the amino-functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles by glutaraldehyde as a coupling agent. The protein assay showed that the enzyme binding efficiency was 77.65% in the immobilization process. The catalytic activity of the immobilized lipase was compared with the free lipase in enzymatic epoxidation of free fatty acids. The results showed that the immobilized enzyme had better stability than the free system during the reaction in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, as an inactivating substrate, especially at extreme conditions of temperature and pH. The statistical study on effects of temperature and pH by response surface methodology specified that the highest epoxidation activity for the immobilized system was observed at temperature 52.2 °C and pH of 6.7. At the optimum condition, the immobilized lipase showed a good reusability, where 100% and 80.97% of origin catalytic epoxidation activity were, respectively, maintained after sixth and tenth cycles. Also, the storage stability of the immobilized lipase was investigated in room temperate and 4 °C. The experiments revealed that the immobilized lipase had an excellent long-term storage stability after 152 and 203 days at 4 °C after being bound to magnetic nanoparticles.

Pyrazine dicarboxylate-bridged arsenotungstate: synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activities in epoxidation of olefins and oxidation of alcohols.

A praseodymium(iii)-containing arsenotungstate K16H15Li7[Pr2(H2O)3(pzdc)As3W29O103]2·38H2O (1) (pzdc = pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid) was synthesized by a conventional aqueous solution method and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis revealed that compound 1 was constructed by two identical subunits {Pr2(H2O)3(AsW9O33)3W2O4} bridged together by two pzdc ligands. In addition, compound 1 could act as an efficient catalyst for the epoxidation of olefins and oxidation of alcohols with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant. In particular, the turnover frequency (TOF) in the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol reached up to 10 170 h-1, which is higher than that of previously reported catalysts.

Direct-Continuous Preparation of Nanostructured Titania-Silica Using Surfactant-Free Non-Scaffold Rice Starch Template.

The conventional synthesis route of nanostructured titania-silica (Ti-SiNS) based on sol-gel requires the use of a surfactant-type template that suffers from hazardous risks, environmental concerns, and a tedious stepwise process. Alternatively, biomaterials have been introduced as an indirect template, but still required for pre-suspended scaffold structures, which hinder their practical application. Herein, we report an easy and industrially viable direct-continuous strategy for the preparation of Ti-SiNS from nanostructured-silica (SiNS) using a hydrolyzed rice starch template. This strategy fits into the conventional industrial process flow, as it allows starch to be used directly in time-effective and less complicated steps, with the potential to upscale. The formation of Ti-SiNS is mainly attributed to Ti attachment in the SiNS frameworks after the polycondensation of the sol-gel composition under acidic-media. The SiNS had pseudo-spherical morphology (nanoparticles with the size of 13 to 22 nm), short order crystal structure (amorphous) and high surface area (538.74 m2·g−1). The functionalized SiNS into Ti-SiNS delivered considerable catalytic activity for epoxidation of 1-naphtol into 1,4-naphthoquinone. The described direct-continuous preparation shows great promise for a cheap, green, and efficient synthesis of Ti-SiNS for advanced applications.

Importance of solvents in preparing highly active Ti-SBA-15 catalysts by grafting method

The importance of solvents in preparing Ti-incorporated SBA-15 mesoporous silica (Ti-SBA-15) of highly catalytic activities in epoxidation of bulky alkenes using titanium alkoxides as grafting agents was disclosed. Solvents were found to markedly affect the coordination environment of Ti incorporated on SBA-15. Among the common solvents examined, best dispersion of tetrahedrally coordinated Ti(IV) on silica surface was obtained by grafting in 1-butanol and the second was in 1-hexanol. It is attributed to that the hydrolysis of titanium alkoxides in these alcohols is slower than in other studied solvents, including short-chain alcohols and non-polar hydrocarbons. Detailed studies on the hydrolysis rates of titanium alkoxide in different solvents were examined. In contrast, titanium alkoxides of different alkyl groups as titanium sources were found to have little influences on the structures and catalytic activities of resultant Ti-SBA-15 materials. Ti-SBA-15 of high Ti loading (ca. 4.2% Ti/Si ratio) prepared by grafting with TBOT in 1-butanol was found to have optimal catalytic activities in epoxidation of cycloalkenes, including cyclohexene and dicyclopentadiene, using tert-butylhydroperoxide as the oxidant.

Two inorganic–organic hybrids based on a polyoxometalate: Structures, characterizations, and epoxidation of olefins

Two new inorganic–organic hybrids, [Co3(bpdo)6(H2O)4Cl2][SiW12O40]·H2O (Co-SiW) and [Ni3(bpdo)6(H2O)4Cl2][SiW12O40]·H2O (Ni-SiW) (bpdo = 4,4′-bis(pyridine-N-oxide)), were synthesized from the Keggin-type [SiW12O40] anion and Co(II) and Ni(II) under hydrothermal conditions, respectively, and characterized by elemental analyses, powder XRD, IR spectra, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural analysis indicates that the 1D chain is constructed from a POM-based half-cage as a secondary building block linked by bridging bpdo ligands. The zigzag chains further stack into a three-dimensional body with channels. The 3D network structure with amphiphilic cavities is shaped by electrostatic interactions through the planes, which has potential to allow molecules such as styrene and H2O2 ingress and egress. Both of the hybrids demonstrated catalytic activity for epoxidation of olefins, which was examined using styrene and aqueous hydrogen peroxide (30%) as oxidant in acetonitrile, along with Co-SiW and Ni-SiW in a heterogeneous manner at 60 °C. Moreover, the conversion of epoxidation reaction in a heterogeneous manner is close to that of homogeneous catalysis, while being conveniently recovered and steadily reused without change of catalyst structure after epoxidation reactions.

A Linear Trinuclear Oxidodiperoxido‐molybdenum(VI) Complex with Single Triazole Bridges: Catalytic Activity in Epoxidation, Alcoholysis, and Acetalization Reactions

AbstractThe complex (Htrz)2[Mo3O6(O2)4(trz)2]⋅H2O (1), isolated from the reaction of MoO3 with H2O2 in the presence of 1,2,4‐triazole (trz), displays singular structural features such as double bridges comprising one oxido and one triazole ligand, and peripheral oxidodiperoxido‐molybdenum(VI) units. A comparative study was performed regarding the catalytic activity and stability of complex 1 and the hybrid material [MoO3(trz)0.5] (2) for the epoxidation of cis‐cyclooctene (Cy8), the alcoholysis of epoxides, and the acetalization of benzaldehyde (PhCHO). Methanol or ethanol were used as solvents and reagents for the latter two reactions. For the substrates Cy8, styrene oxide, and PhCHO, the corresponding epoxide, β‐alkoxy alcohol, and dialkyl acetal were obtained with 100 % selectivity at very high conversions. In general, 1 performed better than 2 for the different catalytic reactions. Under certain oxidant/co‐solvent conditions used for Cy8 epoxidation, 1 was converted to 2 during the reaction.

Immobilization of a Molybdenum Complex on Bipyridine-Based Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica and Its Catalytic Activity for Epoxidation of Olefins

The dichlorodioxomolybdenum(VI) complex (MoO2Cl2) is an efficient and low-cost homogeneous catalyst for a variety of organic reactions, but its activity usually decreases after immobilization on a solid support. This report describes the synthesis of heterogeneous Mo complex catalysts using a bipyridine-periodic mesoporous organosilica (BPy-PMO) as a solid chelating ligand and MoO2Cl2 as a precursor, and their catalysis in the epoxidation of olefins with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). The MoO2Cl(OH) complex could be immobilized on trimethylsilylated BPy-PMO (BPy-PMO-TMS), which was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis. The Mo complex immobilized on BPy-PMO-TMS exhibited greater catalytic activity for the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene compared with conventional heterogeneous Mo complex catalysts using mesoporous silica, polystyrene, and naked BPy-PMO as supports. Sponge-structured titanosilicate zeolite with high catalytic activity in epoxidation of fatty acid methyl ester

Epoxidation of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) is commercially adopting peracids process, which possesses low selectivity and serious pollution problems. Herein, spongy titanosilicate zeolite with high catalytic performance in epoxidation of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) has been demonstrated. The zeolite is constructed by combining pore-extending and post-treatment processes, which features mesopores with a diameter of 3–5.5nm. Thus, in the epoxidation of FAME with tert-butyl hydroperoxide under 90°C, the spongy TS-1 zeolite exhibits >99% conversion within 3h, far higher than that of TS-1 (39%), with a high selectivity (>90%) of epoxy product as well.
