Optimization of biomass durian peel as a heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production using microwave irradiation

Abstract The present study investigated biodiesel production from the transesterification of palm oil with methanol using calcined biomass durian peel (BDP) as a heterogeneous catalyst assisted by microwave irradiation. Characterization of the calcined BDP showed that K2O is the main compound with a concentration of 86.15 wt%. The effect of three independent variables of catalyst weight (3–12 wt%), reaction time (1–10 min), and power of microwave (180–900 W) was used to determine the optimum condition on biodiesel production using the response surface method-based on the Box–Behnken design experiment. The optimum biodiesel conversion of 97.3% was achieved under experimental parameters of catalyst concentration of 12 wt%, reaction time of 9 min, and microwave power of 180 W. The catalyst concentration and reaction time have significant effects on biodiesel conversion.

Efficient production of biodiesel from palm fatty acid distillate using a novel hydrochar-based solid acid catalyst derived from palm leaf waste

To combat fuel shortages, pollution, and the exhaustion of natural oil resources, an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels, such as biodiesel, is essential for meeting global transportation demands. A novel heterogeneous acid catalyst for production of biodiesel from low-cost, high free fatty acid feedstocks was synthesized in this study by activating and impregnating hydrochar from palm leaf (PL) waste with H3PO4 and H2SO4. Subsequently, the sulfonated catalyst was utilized for the esterification of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD). FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, BET, TGA, and surface acidity methods were employed to characterize the acid catalyst. Using the one-variable-at-a-time (OVAT) technique, the optimized reaction conditions for esterification of PFAD using the hydrochar-based catalyst were 4 wt.% catalyst loading, 353.15 K reaction temperature, 4 h reaction time, and 18:1 methanol: PFAD molar ratio. At these conditions, a maximum biodiesel yield of 93.56% was achieved. The catalyst exhibited excellent reusability and stability throughout five reaction cycles, maintaining biodiesel yields above 80% after each cycle. Analysis of the fuel properties revealed that the biodiesel derived from PFAD met the physiochemical criteria outlined in ASTM D6751, the American biodiesel standard. The kinetic study revealed that the esterification reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with an activation energy (Ea) of 23.70 kJ/mol. Furthermore, the thermodynamic enthalpy (∆H*) and Gibbs' free energy (∆G*) of esterification were 20.9 and 33.41 kJ/mol, respectively, indicating that the reaction was an endothermic and non-spontaneous process.

Kinetics and thermodynamics in microwave-assisted transesterification of palm oil utilizing sulphonated bio-graphene catalysts for biodiesel production

Enhanced reaction performance is what has piqued interest in using graphene-based catalysts in producing biodiesel. However, in-depth analyses were lacking from a kinetic and thermodynamic standpoint. This means that a well-designed experiment is necessary to determine the effect that the graphene catalysts have on the reaction rates and yields. This work addresses the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification using sulphonated biomass-derived graphene catalysts, i.e., bGO-SO3H and brGO-SO3H. It was accomplished using the pseudo-first order mechanism and the Eyring-Polanyi equation, with all data fitting satisfactorily in both models at the ideal reaction temperature of 353.15 K, resulting in R2 values of 0.9784 (bGO-SO3H) and 0.9884 (brGO-SO3H). The calculated activation energy (Ea) was determined to be 44.45 and 51.73 kJ mol-1 for bGO- and brGO-SO3H, respectively. Additionally, the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) values were determined at −38.09 and −31.81 kJ mol−1 for bGO- and brGO-SO3H, respectively. Meanwhile, the values for ΔH and ΔS were obtained as 41.69 kJ mol−1 and 225.93 J mol−1 K−1, respectively, and 48.96 kJ mol−1 and 228.72 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. These collective outcomes collectively signify the endothermic nature of the reaction and their spontaneity, particularly under elevated temperature conditions.

In-situ integration of potassium carbonate/Kraft lignin catalyst preparation and biodiesel production via ball-milling process

In this paper, an in-situ integration process of catalyst preparation and biodiesel production via ball-milling process was first proposed. The yield of biodiesel can reach 100 % in a short preparation time of 10 min and a reaction time of 20 min. According to the temperature tracking data during the reaction, there is a synergistic catalytic effect of mechanical energy and thermal energy in the reaction process. The characterization results showed the catalyst prepared by ball-milling process has excellent catalytic activity and potassium (K) is uniformly dispersed on ball-milling-K2CO3/Kraft lignin (BM-K2CO3/KL) catalysts. Based on socio-economic and techno-economic evaluation, biochar-derived catalyst for biodiesel production has created a good market value, and the mechanochemical processes are more cost-effective than traditional thermal catalytic process. This process uses ball-milling technology to integrate catalyst preparation and biodiesel production, which has the advantage of simple operation, strong controllability, and is conducive to improving the FAME yield.

Lampung Natural Zeolite Dopped with of ZnO-TiO2 Metal Oxide as Catalyst for Biodiesel Production

Research has been carried out on making biodiesel from palm oil using natural zeolite catalysts impregnated with metal oxides such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide. This research aims to produce biodiesel using natural zeolite and ZnO-TiO2/NZ catalysts. The catalysts were analyzed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET). The catalyst was tested in the transesterification reaction to produce biodiesel. The mole oil and methanol ratio varied from 1:15, 1:18, and 1:20. In addition, the biodiesel product was analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The results showed the optimum condition for converting triglycerides to 1:18 variation of oil:methanol was 60.53%using a ZnO-TiO2/NZ catalyst. The ZnO-TiO2/NZ catalyst is very promising for use as a catalyst for converting palm oils into biodiesel.

PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BENTONITE CLAY CATALYSTS FOR TRANSESTERIFICATION OF WASTE COOKING OIL INTO BIODIESEL

The development of low-cost green catalytic materials is crucial for the conversion of non-edible vegetable oils or waste materials into biodiesel. The research focuses on the preparation and characterization of aluminium pillared clay and NaOH-doped bentonite clay catalysts for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil using XRF, XRD, FTIR and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The molecular profile and functional group assessment of the biodiesel were done using GC-MS and FTIR respectively. XRF analysis revealed the presence of oxides in all samples. The amount of SiO2 in all samples was within the range of 35.303–39.199 wt%. Al2O3 increased from 15.560 to 19.11 wt%, while the interlayer cations decreased after pillaring. FTIR revealed the appearance of peaks which are characteristic of bentonite. The pillaring and impregnation of NaOH with bentonite led to a distortion of certain peaks' intensity, as evidenced by FTIR results. The pillaring caused an increase in BET surface area and pore volume compared to bentonite from 302.1 to 366.4 m2/g, and 0.186 to 0.189 cc/g respectively, while a decrease in surface area and pore volume was observed in NaOH/bentonite due to impregnation. The XRD data have shown the increase of basal d-spacing of pillared clay from 12.65 to 16.49 Å relative to bentonite with a decrease to 12.45 in the case of NaOH/bentonite. The catalysts prepared outperformed neat bentonite with NaOH/bentonite, resulting in the highest yield of (83 ± 1.80). GC-MS, FTIR, and physicochemical analyses confirmed the production of fatty acid methyl esters.

Magnetic biochar catalyst from reed straw and electric furnace dust for biodiesel production and life cycle assessment

A novel magnetic carbon-based catalyst was prepared from solid waste (reed straw and electric furnace dust) by coprecipitation and high temperature pyrolysis with excellent application potential. Single factor and response surface experiments were used to optimize the catalyst preparation process (mass ratio of reed straw/electric furnace dust of 5:1 at 500 °C in 4 h) and biodiesel production, respectively, with results of 99.89 wt% biodiesel yield in the first cycle (93.61 wt% after 11 cycles) obtained at 74.15 °C in 4.16 h with a 14.06:1 M ratio of methanol/oil and 7.75 wt% catalyst. The life cycle assessment of magnetic carbon-based catalysts for biodiesel production suggested that the soybean oil extraction stage had the greatest impact on the environment, mainly from the use of soybeans and electricity. Solid waste as raw material to prepare catalysts for biomass energy conversion was proven to be a good strategy for energy conservation and emission reduction. This study provides guidance sustainable biomass energy conversion with low cost, low energy consumption, and minimal negative environmental impact.

Eco-Friendly Approach to Palm Oil Biodiesel Production: Torrefied Palm Frond Carbon as a Source for CaO/C/NaOH Catalysts

Biomass-based sources for energy generation have attracted much attention recently due to its environmental benefits. These days, using edible oils and alkali catalysts, such as CaO, is standard practice for the transesterification step of the biodiesel synthesis process. Glycerine and methanol will form hydrogen bonds with the oxygen ions on the CaO surface, increasing the viscosity of the glycerine and causing CaO to suspend. Even though CaO was utilized directly as a catalyst in the transesterification process, extracting the CaO and glycerine from the final product will be challenging. To solve this issue, any extra metal oxides or catalyst supports ought to be impregnated into the CaO. This work has investigated the possible use of eggshells and palm fronds in developing bifunctional catalysts for biodiesel production. A series makes the processes' catalyst, including impregnation, calcination, and torrefaction. To assess the catalyst's performance, the esterification and transesterification of palm oil with a 2.9% free fatty acid content were investigated at a methanol/oil ratio of 6:1, catalyst concentration of 1-3% by weight, reaction temperature of 70 °C, and duration of 3 hours. The catalyst was found to have a specific surface area of 8.266 m2/g. There was an 89.4% yield of biodiesel produced. A viable, economical, and ecologically friendly method of producing biodiesel is to use eggshells and palm fronds in catalyst synthesis.

Chitosan-supported calcium hydroxide hybrid material as new, efficient, and recyclable catalyst for biodiesel production

In this work, a novel supported catalyst was prepared starting from calcium chloride and chitosan flakes using a very mild approach in an aqueous medium without final calcination at high temperatures. The as-prepared catalyst was fully characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies, transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM, SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), demonstrating that it consists of calcium hydroxide particles of about 200 nm supported on chitosan micrometric structures. The most crucial parameters in the transesterification process were investigated. A methanol/oil ratio of 6:1, a reaction time of 6 h, and a temperature of 60 °C were found to lead to complete conversion. A reaction on a gram scale using waste oil as a starting material was also tested, and excellent results were achieved. Moreover, the catalyst proved to be very robust, since even after the 10th recycle, the conversion rate remained at around 90 %. Spectroscopic analyses showed minimal leaching of material without modification of chemical composition. The kinetic behavior (activation energy, Ea) of the catalyst was also studied, which resulted in similar outcomes to Ca-based systems present in the literature, but without the need for costly preparations and with superior recycling resistance. An Ea value of 63.25 kJ·mol−1 was found, which agrees with data reported in the literature.

Preparation of CaO@CeO2 Solid Base Catalysts Used for Biodiesel Production

The study investigated the use of CeO2 extracted from monazite with calcium oxide (CaO) as a solid catalyst for biodiesel production. The wet impregnation method was used to produce CaO@CeO2 mixed-oxide catalysts with 0–50 wt.% CaO. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) was used to characterize the catalysts. In order to determine the optimal preparation conditions, the effect of different CaO compositions on the performance of CaO@CeO2 mixed-oxide catalysts was examined. The catalytic activity of the CaO@CeO2 catalyst for the transesterification reaction of palm oil to produce biodiesel was studied. The results show that the optimum yield of biodiesel can reach 97% fatty acid methyl ester over the 30CaO@CeO2 catalyst at the reaction conditions of 5 wt.% catalysts, methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 9:1, with a reaction temperature of 65 °C within 30 min. The results show that the high catalytic activity and stability of the CaO@CeO2 catalyst make it a promising candidate for industrial-scale biodiesel production. Further study is needed to improve the stability and efficiency of catalysts in transesterification reactions to achieve a high FAME yield using long-life-span catalysts. Moreover, it is necessary to investigate the economic feasibility of this process for application in large-scale biodiesel production.

Preparation of KI/KIO3/Methoxide Kaolin Catalyst and Performance Test of Catalysis in Biodiesel Production

Kaolin is a natural ingredient that is in abundance and has not been widely used. Kaolin is a source of silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) so that it can be used as a heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production. This research aims to examine the influence of using impregnated kaolin as a heterogeneous catalyst on production of biodiesel. Research methods include calcination of natural kaolin, impregnation of kaolin using KI, KIO3, and preparation of kaolin-methoxide in various concentrations, as well as biodiesel production using an impregnated kaolin catalyst. The catalyst was characterized using XRD and SEM. The catalyst was tested for basicity using the Hammet indicator method with acid-base titration. The biodiesel product obtained was analyzed using GCMS. The results of XRD analysis showed that 8% kaolin-methoxide catalyst had the highest crystallinity among the others. The crystallinity obtained was 87.84% with a composition of 15.79% SiO2 and 78.86% Al2O3. SEM image results also show a more visible crystal shape. The highest basicity of the catalyst obtained was 0.240 mmol. The highest biodiesel yield using 8% kaolin-methoxide catalyst is 99.48%.

Magnesium Oxide (MgO) as a Sustainable Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil: A Comparative Study with KOH

The present study investigates the efficiency of magnesium oxide (MgO) as a heterogeneous catalyst in the production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO), putting an emphasis on its environmental benefits, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficacy. Through a series of experiments, we optimized the reaction conditions, including catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, and ethanol to WCO molar ratio, to achieve a high biodiesel yield. The results indicate that an optimal MgO concentration of 3 wt%, a reaction temperature of 65 °C, and a molar ratio of 9:1 result in the highest biodiesel production efficiency. Additionally, MgO demonstrated significant reusability without a decrease in performance, underscoring its economic and environmental advantages. Comparative analysis revealed that MgO outperforms conventional KOH catalysts in terms of yield, purity, and sustainability. Our study suggests future research directions, including the optimization of MgO preparation methods and the exploration of co-catalyst systems to further enhance biodiesel production from WCO. This research contributes to the development of sustainable biodiesel production methods, aligning with global energy and environmental goals.

Synthesis of HNTs-Ca/Zn catalyst for biodiesel production from acidulated palm oil: Optimized by GA-BP

The development of heterogeneous base catalyst with acid resistance has become a major topic in the current research on the biodiesel production process. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) is supported with bimetallic of calcium and zinc for modification and labeled as HNTs-Ca/Zn to show both the acid and base characteristics. Further, this supported catalyst is used to produce biodiesel from the acidulated palm oil through catalyzing transesterification in one-step in this study. The HNTs-Ca/Zn catalyst, synthesized by the impregnation method, is characterized by TG-DTG, XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM-EDX, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, CO2/NH3-TPD, FTIR and Raman. The capability of the HNTs-Ca/Zn catalyst in catalyzing transesterification is investigated, where the maximum yield of 95.22% is achieved with the molar ratio of Zn to Ca of 1.5. The advantage of HNTs-Ca/Zn1.5 catalyst is prominent when the transesterification source oil is acidulated, where the biodiesel yield of 92.66% is obtained even at the acid value of 26.02 mg KOH g−1. Besides, reusability of the catalyst is acceptable, where the yield of 77.91% is maintained after the fourth reused cycle. Further, the Genetic Algorithm-Back Propagation (GA-BP) neural network is used to train and predict the transesterification parameters of the reaction temperature, catalyst amount and methanol to oil molar ratio. The prediction of the biodiesel yield is reasonable. At the predicted reaction parameters of 158 °C, catalyst amount of 7.1 wt.% and methanol to oil molar ratio of 15.5, the predicted biodiesel yield is 98.71%, where the experimental verification value is 98.60%. Therefore, the HNTs-Ca/Zn catalyst is considered to demonstrate exceptional catalytic performance and recyclability, offering the potential for biodiesel production.

Synthesis and Characterization of K2O/ACT Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Beef Fat Waste

The increasing use of petroleum as fuel has depleted fuel, so alternative fuels such as biodiesel are needed because they are environmentally friendly and come from vegetable and animal sources. Therefore, this article presents biodiesel production from beef fat using a K2O/ACT heterogeneous base catalyst derived from egg shells. The Eggshell becomes a CaO catalyst after 3 hours of calcination at 900°C. The K2O/ACT catalyst was synthesized by impregnating CaO with KOH and characterized using XRD and BET. The K2O/ACT catalyst was compared to the CaO catalyst for transesterification activity under appropriate conditions (reaction temperature 65°C, catalyst loading 3% by weight, oil to methanol molar ratio 1:12, and reaction time 3 hours). The catalytic activity of the catalyst was determined to be 98.40% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME). The insertion of K2O into the CaO catalyst increases the basicity characteristics, thereby increasing the catalytic activity of transesterification.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Solid Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Jatropha curcas Oil: Kinetic Study and Process Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology

Jatropha curcas oil (JCO) is a promising source for the manufacturing of biodiesel and has gained a lot of attention due to its environmental friendliness and availability in many parts of the world as a result of the rising need for energy. In this study, JCO was converted to biodiesel using a heterogeneous CaO-ZrO2 catalyst made from biomass and MOFs. The central composite design of response surface technique was used to change the transesterification parameters to enhance JCO conversion. After optimization using RSM, the reaction parameters were set to a catalyst loading of 6.34 wt%, a reaction time of 68 minutes, a temperature of 92.9°C, and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 18 : 1; then, the yield of biodiesel was found to be 97.12±0.4%. Using various analytical techniques, the chemical composition, texture, and its morphology have been examined by FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA, and BET. Moreover, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and GC-MS have all been used to describe the biodiesel that has been created. While the catalyst’s activity reduced, it was found that, after being washed with hexane and dried by calcination, it could still be used up to the fifth cycle.

A Study of Green Synthesis of Nano-TiO2 Catalyst by Gossypium Leaf Extract and Its Nanocatalysis in the Synthesis of Biofuel from Gossypium Seed Oil

Synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles by aqueous leaf extract of Gossypium (Gossypiumarboretum) leaves on meta titanic acid [TiO(OH)2]. Rutile tetragonal TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM studies and their particle size was calculated, which was below 100 nm. The Obtained TiO2NPs were used as catalysts in the transesterification of Gossypium seed oil, which enhanced the rate of reaction. Thus, it is a very attractive catalyst for biodiesel production from Gossypium seed oil. The effect of the amount of nano-TiO2 catalyst and microwave heating was studied. In this study, the preparation of both catalyst and biodiesel from the parts of the same Gossypium plant and the feasibility of carrying out the microwave-assisted transesterification (green process) of Gossypium seed oil by using biogenic nanoTiO2 catalyst was explored. They improve the efficiency of transesterification. The used catalyst can be recycled by simple filtration and reused without reduction in its activity. It is a green method (affords nontoxic and noncorrosive medium), clean reaction, simple experimental, isolation procedures, gives high yield and the properties of synthesized biodiesel are in good agreement with that of diesel oil. So, it may be used alone or by blending with diesel.

Manufacturing Biodiesel from Cooking Oil Teaching Factory Products Using Bentonite Catalyst with Non-Alcohol Route Method

This research investigates an eco-friendly approach to biodiesel production through non-alcoholic pathways using heterogeneous catalysts. The study examines various ratios of methyl acetate to cooking oil and temperatures, revealing that the optimal conditions for biodiesel production are a 1:4 ratio, utilizing a bentonite catalyst (0.75 g), operating at 60°C for 120 minutes. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirms the presence of ester groups, the primary component of biodiesel. Most biodiesel characteristics align with quality standards, including density (0.8844 kg/m3), cetane number (61.9), and acid number. However, the biodiesel flash point falls below the minimum standard, suggesting a potential area for improvement. This research underscores the potential of using methyl acetate as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production, with most biodiesel characteristics meeting established quality standards, although further work may be needed to address the flash point issue.
