Cat personality may influence the choice of a specific animal and the future guardian-cat relationship. Our aim was to evaluate the relationships between cat personality and the report cat behaviors considered undesirable by the guardians in the first three months after cat adoption. An online questionnaire was developed for guardians of cats adopted at most three months before study participation. The questionnaire approached physical characteristics of cats, guardians’ doubts, cat behavioral events, and cats’ personality as assessed by a guardian-filled Qualitative Behavior Assessment (QBA) form. Most of the 133 respondents adopted female cats (60.1%) and those younger than six months (63.9%). Most guardians reported having doubts about initial cat care (75.9%), with 34.6% not having other cats at home when they adopted. Half of the guardians did not know how to introduce the new cat to their other animals. The most prevalent events were meowing and scratching or biting an adult human (39.1% each). Five dimensions of cat personality were identified, with four of them showing correlations with the behavioral events: ‘Agreeableness’ and hiding behavior (p<0.005), not allowing to be touched (p<0.005), scratching or biting a child (p=0.049), and skittishness (p<0.005); ‘Introversion’ and meowing (p=0.034); ‘Soliciting’ and urinating outside the appropriate place (p=0.008); and ‘Aggressiveness’ and skittishness (p=0.013). Households where one of the residents didn’t like the adopted cat were correlated with young age of the cat (p=0.014). The number of cats in the household was associated with taking the cat to the vet (p=0.049), urinating outside the appropriate place (p=0.038), skittishness (p=0.001), and cat not allowing to be touched (p=0.013). We conclude that some behavioral events that occur in the post-adoption period are more common for four out of five dimensions of cat personality and with some characteristics of the home environment. In addition, considering such variables may increase the rate of successful cat adoptions.
