Spindle Cell Hemangioma of the Elbow: Case Report of an Underdiagnosed Entity

Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH), formerly known as spindle cell hemangioendothelioma, was first described by Weiss and Enzinger in 1986. It is a unique vascular tumor, composed of cavernous spaces and kaposiform solid area. It almost affects the dermis and subcutis of distal extremities. Herein we describe a case of SCH in the right elbow of 9 years old boy. Because the reported cases in the literature are rare, it is suggested that SCH is an underdiagnosed tumor.

Spindle cell hemangioma of femur

Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH) an uncommon vascular tumor typically appears as solitary or multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules in middle-aged adults. Its occurrence in bone is extremely rare. We report a case of SCH arising at an uncommon site, the distal femur with radiological local invasion, but without histological pleomorphism and mitosis. It is important to avoid misdiagnosis as these lesions are considered to be benign, non-neoplastic reactive vascular proliferations, with high incidence of recurrence.

Periosteal spindle cell hemangioma of the fibula: a case report

Spindle cell hemangioma is a rare benign tumor characterized by cavernous blood vessels and spindle cell proliferation. It typically arises in the subcutis of the distal extremities, particularly in the hand. Spindle cell hemangioma of periosteal origin is extremely rare, and our extensive literature search did not find any reports of this condition. We report here a case of spindle cell hemangioma of periosteal origin arising from the right fibula of a 49-year-old woman. Pathological examination of a needle biopsy specimen indicated the possibility of low-grade spindle cell sarcoma, and the patient underwent resection of the fibular diaphysis with a wide margin. Subsequent examination of the surgical specimen revealed a diagnosis of periosteal spindle cell hemangioma. Follow-up examination at 10 months showed no evidence of local recurrence or metastasis. A large tissue sample was required for definitive diagnosis in this case. Spindle cell hemangioma behaves in a benign fashion, but recurrence occurs in about 60% of cases. Excision of the fibula was a reasonable course of management in this case because these patients usually maintain good function. Reports of additional cases will be required to determine the most appropriate treatment for this tumor.

Spindle cell hemangioma: report of a case presenting in the oral cavity

Spindle cell hemangioma, formerly termed spindle cell hemangioendothelioma, is an uncommon benign vascular tumor. Presentation in the oral cavity is rare with only two previously reported cases. We report a case of spindle cell hemangioma that presented as an asymptomatic mass of the buccal mucosa in a 44-year-old man. The tumor was a well-circumscribed vascular proliferation of spindled to epithelioid endothelial cells. Tumor cells with intracytoplasmic vascular lumens were present in several areas. Larger, ectatic, thin-walled vessels lined by a single layer of flattened endothelial cells were evident at the periphery and focally in more cellular areas. The tumor was positive for CD31 and CD34. Spindle cell hemangioma rarely presents in the oral cavity and needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral cavity vascular tumors to avoid misdiagnosis as a more aggressive vascular tumor.

Spindle cell hemangioma (hemangioendothelioma) of the head and neck: case report of an unusual (or underdiagnosed) tumor

Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH), also known as spindle cell hemangioendothelioma, is a unique vascular tumor with combined microscopic features of both a cavernous hemangioma and Kaposi sarcoma. It almost exclusively affects the dermis and subcutis of the distal extremities. A review of the literature disclosed only 5 cases of SCH reported in detail in the soft tissues of the head and neck. An additional case of SCH manifesting as a submucosal nodule in the upper lip of a 29-year-old woman is presented. Because this is the second case reported from the same institution, it is suggested that SCH is an underdiagnosed lesion.

METHODS A case report and discussion of the rare entity of SCH are given. RESULTS The excision of a vascular tumor showed a vascular connection to the great saphenous vein. Histologic examination was consistent with SCH. CONCLUSION The diagnosis of SCH is supported by typical histologic and immunohistochemical features and by the intraoperative finding of an association with a large vessel.
