The anomalies happened in the jaw are of genetic character, therefore its presence in the herd should be prevented, therefore this provokes difficulties in the apprehension and chewing of the foods, what can take the animal to serious alimentary deficiencies and until the death. This work has as on objective to verify the presence or not of goat and sheep with that anomaly. 5.221 animals in five towns of the region surrounding of the Irece had been evaluated. It was verified presence of those anomalies in 107 animals (2.05%), being 53 (1.02%) cases of Retrognathism and 54 (1.03%) cases of Prognathism. These found values had been considered of low occurrence although not to have other works of goat and sheep similar surveys in being made the comparison. Thirty-four cases of mandibular prognathism treated with intraoral oblique sagittal splitting osteotomy were evaluated retrospectively by cephalometric analysis of skeletal changes of the mandible during at least 6 months after surgery. The subjects were 17 cases of prognathism and 17 cases of prognathism with anterior openbite.In those cases of prognathism alone, the distal segment (represented by the point labelled Gn) and the proximal segment (represented by the point Go) were surgically reduced posteriorly parallel to the SN line. In those cases with openbite, the distal segment was surgically mored postero-superiorly and the proximal segment postero-inferiorly.During intermaxillary fixation, the distal segment remained stable, but the proximal segment returned to the almost preoperative position in both groups of subjects. Until 6 months after releasing the fixation, the distal segment moved antero-superiorly and the proximal segmentinferiorly in the group with prognathism alone. In the other group, both segment remained stable.After 6 months, both segments remained stable in both groups.However, the total degree of mandibular regression was so slight that none of cases relapsed to edge-to-edge or Class III malocclusion during the follow-up period.

Postoperative changes of various hard tissue landmarks, U1, L1, point B, Pog, over jet and over bite, were assessed for 17 cases of prognathism that had been surgically corrected by Obwegeser-Dal Pont technique, by means of a series of lateral cephalograms at four times: preoperatively, immediate-postoperatively, 3 months postoperatively and more than 6 months postoperatively.During intermaxillary fixation U1 might move upwards and anteriorly in some cases. More than 6 months postoperatively each of U1, L1, point B and Pog tended to move upwards, or upwards and anteriorly. In the period of immediate-postoperative time to 3 months postoperatively, movement of each landmark varied significantly. It was probably caused by postoperative orthodontic treatment. Neither over jet nor over bite changed postoperatively. It suggested that postoperative orthodontic treatment could help the stability of anterior occlusal relationship.Anterior movement of Pog was larger than that of L1 presumably because of lingual inclination or (and) displacement of lower anterior teeth.No correlation was found between horizantal or vertical extent of displacement by surgery, and amount of postoperative change of Pog. However, cases of larger amount of vertical extent of displacement showed large variety of postoperative vertical changes of Pog, suggesting poor stability of these cases.It was also discussed that postsurgical dento-facial changes could be affected by intermaxillary xation, postoperative orthodontic treatment, mobile tendency of teeth and occlusal interdigitation.

Open subcondylar osteotomy in the treatment of mandibular deformities

This report deals with the results of a reversed L-shape osteotomy of the ascending ramus in cases of mandibular deformities. The presence of a small eminence on the lateral surface of the ramus opposite the mandibular foramen makes it possible to safely perform the osteotomy on the lateral surface without risking any damage to the nerve and vessels. This method has been applied in 18 cases of mandibular prognathism and one case of micrognathia and followed up during a period of 1–2 years. A good cosmetic and occlusal result could be observed in 18 cases. A slight open bite occurred in only one case of prognathism and it was because of the patient's negligence. A transient numbness of the lower lip occurred in three cases.

The management of macroglossia when associated with prognathism

Summary Most cases of prognathism will not require associated surgery on the tongue. A simple method is suggested for possible use in the occasional case which may have such a large tongue that a sudden gross change in the location of the jaw will have undesirable effects on the breathing or swallowing mechanism. A single case is presented in which the post-operative upset in the physiology of the tongue was both temporary and minimal.

Etiology of all cases should be found and the correction of it begun. When orthodontic treatment is indicated, it should be accomplished before surgery in order that the teeth and jaws can be placed in their normal occlusal relation. In all extreme cases of prognathism there is but little angle to the mandible, but this method gives the opportunity to make an angle. This surgical procedure does not interfere with the nerve and blood supply of the parts except to stretch them a little. There are no scars to mar the face and this technique causes comparatively little discomfort to the patient.
