Virtual diagnosis of a combined pathology of the thyroid gland in a child with prolonged febrility

The aim of the study is to show the application of the case method for studying diagnosis of rare diseases on a specific example. The article presents the possibilities of virtual diagnosis of a clinical case — a child with congenital hypothyroidism complicated by fever of unclear genesis. The authors presented a web application that allows reproducing the process of differential diagnosis in order to clarify the genesis of prolonged subfebrile fever. At each stage of virtual diagnosis, a user is supposed to analyze all the information about the patient and make a decision: plan further examination, «refer» the patient to specialists for consultations, while forming diagnostic hypotheses. As a result of passing the case, the integral score — the sum of points for correct answers — is calculated and displayed on the screen. Repeated performing of virtual diagnosis usually increases the score, and, most importantly, helps to consolidate the knowledge necessary for correct diagnosis. Interactive clinical case can be used in the training process of clinical residents, medical students as an additional tool. It can also be applied for pediatricians’ professional upgrade for they can be exposed to this pathology. Application of case method in education allows to guide the learning physician through the stages of virtual diagnosis, to evaluate the accuracy of his decisions and to explain the mistakes made while solving the case.

The new world trends and the communicative approach in education contributed significantly to the popularization of the case-method in education. The article examines the possibilities and justifies the importance of the use of the case-study methodology in teaching of the Bulgarian language. The purpose of the article is to describe the essence of this approach as one of the means of integrating linguistic skills for learning foreign languages, and also to explore and expand the possibilities of using the case-study method in teaching of the Bulgarian language. It is concluded that the interactive case-study method meets the needs of the modern socio-cultural and educational context - language training with a clearly defined communicative orientation increases educational motivation and solves a number of important problems for the development of both linguistic and professional competences.

THE ROLE OF MODERN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES IN THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS' BUSINESS QUALITIES

The role of modern educational technologies in formation of students' business qualities is explained in the article; the essence and basic requirements for the application of the project method and the case method in education are explained; pedagogical conditions for successful formation of students' business qualities in higher education institutions are formulated; the conclusions about the pedagogical effectiveness of the use of modern educational technologies have been made. Analytical work proved that the formation of students' business qualities is an important task for high school teachers. The content of modern educational technologies is determined.
 The means and possibilities of the project method and the case method are analyzed, it is found that the use of these methods stimulates and promotes the formation and development of students' business qualities. It is noted that these methods are characterized by a significant pedagogical effect, as they develop such personal characteristics as the ability to analyze problems, the ability to formulate and express their position clearly, communicate, discuss, perceive and evaluate information. They form self-confidence, communication skills, creativity and many other traits of personality.
 The survey found that the most important business qualities of the respondents consider themselves: self-confidence, responsibility, creativity, persistence, sociability.
 The level of business qualities of students of higher education institutions is determined: 30% of students have high level of business qualities, 35% - average, and 35% - low. This means that 70% of the student population needs the formation and correction of personal business qualities. The following pedagogical conditions of formation of business qualities of students by means of modern educational technologies are defined and theoretically substantiated:
 - implementation of a set of traditional and innovative forms and methods of training focused on the formation of business qualities of the individual;
 - creation of positive motivation of students for formation of business qualities, need for self-improvement;
 - introduction of the system of knowledge about modern educational technologies as a means of formation of business qualities of the individual.

Review : Particulars and principles: case studies in librarianship

With recent developments in professional education and research, the number of case studies is likely to increase. The case method in education, with its emphasis on real situations and problems, engages the interest of students and helps them to understand the processes of decision-making. In education, research and practice, case studies supply needed information about particulars and provide a basis for the establishment of general principles. Generaliza tion is a fundamental process both in the observation and description of particulars and in their interpretation. It is essential that case-collectors make their underlying attitudes and assumptions explicit. Some case studies in librarianship are inadequate in this respect. If the case method in education is not supported by a systematic approach to learning, and if too great an emphasis is placed on decision-making, education is likely to degenerate into training and conservative attitudes will be fostered. Those undertaking case studies not primarily intended for educational purposes should also recognize the need for a systematic framework if the knowledge derived from their studies is to be cumulative and of service in the formulation of action. Additionally, a vision of the library and its role in society ( which can best be discovered in sources outside librarianship) is essential if the particulars and principles we investigate are to be of wide significance.
