Linking undergraduates’ future work self and employability: a moderated mediation model

BackgroundThe career intentions of students play a crucial role in shaping the growth of the hospitality and tourism industry. Previous research underlines the significance of future work self in predicting outcomes related to one’s career. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the precise ways, timing, and conditions under which the future work self of undergraduate students can enhance their employability.MethodsThis paper aims to address the existing research gap by employing career construction theory and self-determination theory to propose a moderated mediation model—i.e., career exploration serves as a mediator and job market knowledge functions as a moderator in the relationship between future work self and employability. We conducted two independent studies (i.e., an experimental study and a time-lagged field study) to test the proposed model. Specifically, in Study 1 we employed an experimental research design to recruit 61 students majoring in tourism management to participate. They were randomly assigned to two scenarios (future work self: high vs. low), and we manipulated different levels of future work self by means of scenario descriptions. In Study 2, we used the time-lagged research design to collect data via submitting questionnaires among 253 Chinese undergraduates who majored in hospitality and tourism at a university in the middle area of China.ResultsThe results indicate a positive correlation between undergraduates’ future work self and their employability. Furthermore, this relationship is mediated by a mediator of career exploration. It is important to note that this mediating relationship is also contingent upon the moderator variable of undergraduates’ job market knowledge when considering the impact of career exploration on employability.ConclusionThe findings contribute to enriching the current understanding of the positive effects of future work self on undergraduates’ desirable outcomes in employability.

Determinant of Career Intention in Malaysia Hospitality Industry for Hearing Disabled Youth

This study examined the association between the determinants influencing the career intention of students with hearing disabilities in the hospitality industry. Data were collected from 175 students with hearing disabilities who enrolled in Certificates in Hotel and Catering, Basic Culinary, and Basic Pastry at Polytechnic and Community Colleges (n=4) in Malaysia. Questionnaires were developed and distributed via face to face with the help of a sign language translator. The findings revealed that perceived industry characteristics (r=0.611, p < .001) and self-efficacy (r=0.742, p < .001) were strongly related to students with hearing disabilities' career intentions in the hospitality workforce.

Growing Our Own Rural, Remote and Aboriginal Health Workforce: Contributions made, approaches taken and lessons learnt by three rural Australian academic health departments.

This paper describes the investments made, approaches taken and lessons learnt by three rural Australian academic health departments engaged in the delivery of the Health Career Academy Program (HCAP). The program seeks to address the under-representation of rural, remote and Aboriginal populations within Australia's health workforce. Significant resources are directed towards rural practice exposure for metropolitan health students to address workforce shortages. Fewer resources are directed towards health career strategies that focus on the earlier engagement of rural, remote and Aboriginal secondary school students, those in Years 7-10. Best practice career development principles highlight the importance of earlier engagement in the promotion of health career aspirations and in influencing secondary school student career intentions and uptake of health professions. This paper describes: delivery contexts; the theory and evidence that has informed the HCAP; program design, adaptability and scalability; program focus on priming the rural health career pipeline; program alignment to best practice career development principles; enablers and barriers confronted in program delivery, and lessons learnt to inform rural health workforce policy and resourcing. There is a need to invest in programs that seek to attract rural, remote and Aboriginal secondary school students to health professions if Australia is to develop a sustainable rural health workforce. A failure to invest earlier undermines opportunities to engage diverse and aspiring youth in Australia's health workforce. Program contributions, approaches and lessons learnt can inform the work of other agencies seeking to include these populations in health career initiatives.

A qualitative perspective on what factors influence ScotGEM students' career intentions.

ScotGEM is a novel graduate medicine programme in Scotland with a rural generalist focus. This survey-based study aimed to assess the career intentions of ScotGEM students and the various factors influencing them. An online questionnaire was devised from existing literature that explored students' interest regarding generalist or specialty career, geographical location, and influencing factors. Free-text responses regarding their primary care career interest and their reasoning behind geographical preferences allowed for qualitative content analysis. Responses were coded inductively and categorised into themes by two independent researchers who then compared and finalised the themes. 126/163 (77%) completed the questionnaire. Content analysis of free-text responses in relation to a negative attitude towards a prospective GP career yielded themes: personal aptitude, emotional toll of GP and uncertainty. Themes in relation to desired geographical preference included: family factors, lifestyle issues and perceptions regarding professional and personal development opportunities. The qualitative analysis of factors influencing the career intentions of students on the graduate programme is key to understanding what is important to them. Students who have decided against primary care have realised an early aptitude for specialism due to their experiences, while also witnessing the potential emotional toll of primary care. Family needs may already be dictating where they will choose to work in the future. Lifestyle reasons were in favour of both urban and rural careers, with a sizeable number of responses still uncertain. These findings and their implications are discussed in context of existing international literature on rural medical workforce.

ScotGEM - an update on Scotland's only graduate-entry rural generalist-focused undergraduate programme, including student career intentions.

In 2016, the Scottish Government commissioned ScotGEM, a generalist focused graduate entry medical programme. The first cohort of 55 students entered in 2018 and will graduate in 2022. Key unique features of ScotGEM include over 50% of clinical education being led by GPs, the creation of a team of dedicated Generalist Clinical Mentors (GCMs) who support this, a geographically dispersed approach to delivery, and a focus on healthcare improvement activities. This presentation will focus on the progress of our inaugural cohort in terms of progression, performance, and career intentions in comparison with the related internationally literature. Progression and performance will be reported based upon assessment outcomes. Career intentions were assessed via an electronic questionnaire exploring career preferences, including speciality, location and reasoning distributed to the first three cohorts. We utilised questions derived from key UK and Australian studies to allow direct comparison with the existing literature. The response rate was 77% (126/163). ScotGEM students' progression rate was high and performance directly comparable with Dundee students. A positive attitude towards general practice and emergency medicine careers was reported. A high proportion of students intended to remain in Scotland, with half interested in working in rural or remote settings. Overall, results suggest ScotGEM is meeting the aims of its Mission, a finding of key workforce relevance in Scotland and other rural European contexts that supplements the existing international evidence base. The role of GCMs has been instrumental and may be applicable in other areas.

Student experiences and entrepreneurship education in a specialist creative arts HEI: a longitudinal approach

A longitudinal study of music students in a specialist higher education institution explored career intentions of students preparing for a career in the music industry. Stage of study had an impact on career goals, with students likely to gravitate away from aspirations for a performance career, towards a portfolio, freelance career. Alumni data supported this, with 80.3% of graduates from the institution currently engaged in a portfolio career. Reasons for changing intentions included gaining awareness of alternatives, personal insights, and negative prospects of the sector. Role models and other sources of inspiration were also key. Early students, especially those holding offers and yet to start, were particularly susceptible to external inspiration, such as advice or experiencing an exciting performance. Alumni were inspired by continuing to learn new skills, and networking with peers. Students were asked to self-rate themselves against generic industry competencies, and were most confident in setting goals and working as a team, and least confident in applying specific business skills such as managing finances. Findings are discussed in relation to the role that entrepreneurship education can play in supporting the needs of students in specialist performing arts, underpinning the need for early intervention and support as students perspectives emerge and are re-evaluated during their studies.

Founder or employee? The effect of social factors and the role of entrepreneurship education

Career intentions of students are extremely important and they are affected by the particular social context, such as cultures, communities, universities in which they are embedded. The exposure to entrepreneurship education may also have moderating effects on the different social antecedents of career intentions. We draw data from a large sample and use logistic regression and marginal effects to highlight the importance of the socio-cultural environment to the intention to become a founder instead of an employee in the near and distant future. We show that the effect of entrepreneurship education is not the same in every social context. While entrepreneurship research up to now has mainly focused on individual level determinants of career choices, we highlight the importance of the social environment. Policy makers should consider the characteristics of the different levels of the social environment before designing policies to reinforce the intention to become a founder.

Professional Master's Athletic Training Students' Career Influences Part II: Short-Term and Long-Term Career Intentions

Context As athletic training education continues to evolve to a professional master's degree, understanding the career intentions of students preparing to graduate from professional master's programs is essential. Objective To examine the career intentions of second-year professional master's athletic training students and identify the factors that influence their intentions. Design Convergent mixed methods. Setting Online surveys and individual phone interviews. Patients or Other Participants A total of 80 second-year professional master's students (63 women, 13 men, 4 no response, age = 24.63 ± 2.29 years) who were enrolled in the final semester of their program in spring 2019 participated in the online survey. Ten survey respondents participated in follow-up phone interviews. Data Collection and Analysis An online survey was designed and administered to answer the research questions. Semistructured phone interviews were conducted as a follow-up to the survey to gain further insight into the research questions. The data from the survey and interviews were woven together and merged to provide a comprehensive display of results. Triangulation, member checks, memos, and peer debriefing were completed for trustworthiness. Results Two higher-order themes emerged from the data: career progression and factors influencing career intentions. We identified 3 lower-order themes for career progression: short-term career plans, concerns over lack of experience, and long-term career plans. Two lower-order themes were identified for factors influencing career intentions: clinical experience and mentorship. Conclusions Second-year professional master's athletic training students have short-term and long-term career plans. Their career intentions were influenced by past clinical experiences and the mentorship received from their clinical preceptors and faculty members during their professional education. Unfortunately, many students were having difficulty obtaining positions after graduation due to a lack of professional experience. As a result, some turned to internship or residency positions to gain experience.

Midwifery students’ views and experiences of birth on mainstream factual television

ObjectivesTo investigate midwifery students’ experiences of viewing childbirth on mainstream factual television and to explore implications for student career intentions and potential pedagogical uses of television excerpts in midwifery education. DesignTwenty-two undergraduate midwifery students at one of two universities took place in focus groups between February and June 2019. Ethical approval was obtained at both sites. Thematic analysis was employed to generate key themes from the data. SettingTwo UK universities based in the East Midlands and East Yorkshire regions of England. ParticipantsTwenty-two midwifery students at any stage of their studies. FindingsResearchers generated four key themes from the data a) Changed Perspectives on Televised Childbirth, b) Representations of Midwives and Social Implications, c) Representation of Childbirth and Social Implications and d) The Role of Televising Childbirth in Midwifery Education. Key conclusionsMidwifery students often experience a change of perspective on birth on television as they acquire new knowledge and skills. They recognise the potential social implications of how childbirth and midwifery are represented on television. Pedagogical use of televised birth has potential benefits but needs further investigation in the context of midwifery education. Implications for practiceMidwifery students are likely to begin their studies with pre-existing views and experiences around how birth is represented on mainstream factual television. They may need support to reflect on these to consider their expectations of the profession, to effectively support childbearing women and to potentially influence future production of media images of childbirth.

Double degree destinations: Nursing or midwifery

BackgroundDouble degrees in nursing and midwifery have evolved in Australia as a proposed solution to possible impending shortages of qualified midwives in the healthcare workforce. The double degree is seen as a more acceptable option in non-metropolitan areas in particular. Concern has been expressed however, about dilution of midwifery philosophy and graduates’ opportunities in respect of future clinical practice. AimThis study aimed to provide a better understanding of motivations and intentions of students who undertake the Bachelor of Nursing Science/Bachelor of Midwifery double degree. MethodsA cross-sectional survey design was employed at four universities that offered double degrees in nursing and midwifery in three states of Australia. Students enrolled in first and fourth year of a double degree and graduates of a double degree were invited to complete an online survey comprised of Likert scales and items requiring free text responses. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS and thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. FindingsParticipants indicated a clear preference for midwifery as a career with this preference increasing for each cohort at each stage of study. DiscussionPrimary reasons for selecting a double degree were perceived increased opportunity for employment and use of nursing skills to enhance midwifery practice in a population with growing co-morbidities. A strong identification with midwifery philosophy and identity was also demonstrated. ConclusionAn understanding of motivations and career intentions of students undertaking double degree studies can inform future program development and workforce planning.

Internship and Self Efficacy: A Literature Review On Career Intentions Of Undergraduate Hospitality Students

There has been a gap between the manpower requirement and the supply of the same from the hospitality institutions and it is forecasted to become wider. This paper is an attempt to understand the reasons that affect the career choice and intention of Indian undergraduate hospitality students with regard to internship experiences and self efficacy. The main objective of this paper is to identify the variables and find the effect of the variables on the career intentions of the students. It will also examine the mediating effect of the variables on each other and with regard to their career intention through systemic review.

“Where would I prefer to work after graduation?” Career preferences of students attending Italian nursing schools

BackgroundWorldwide, nursing students have reported a preference for working in intensive care, paediatrics, and operating theatres after graduation, disregarding psychiatry and geriatrics. Many factors can influence student choices. Educators need to know students' preferences and influencing factors in order to plan appropriate interventions to orient future nurses towards the clinical areas that are most in need of trained and motivated nurses. ObjectivesTo identify career preferences and student-related factors that influence the career intentions of students attending Italian nursing schools. DesignA cross sectional design. SettingThe study was conducted in 14 Italian nursing schools. ParticipantsStudents enrolled on a three-year undergraduate nursing program were invited to participate. MethodsA questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data and clinical area preferences. A multivariate binary logistic regression was performed to identify the student characteristics influencing career choices. Results1534 students were enrolled in the study. Students preferred working in paediatrics, emergency departments and operating theatres, and these preferences were consistent in all of the three years. Psychiatry and geriatrics were the clinical areas least preferred in all the three years. Age, gender, nationality, and university attended were the factors that predicted students' preferences for specific clinical areas. ConclusionsIn line with international literature, students attending Italian nursing schools expressed preferences for working in some clinical areas and to disregard others. Nursing curricula and internships need to be reviewed in terms of declared and hidden curriculum in order to enable students to view all areas of practice as equally valuable.

The die is cast: Brexit's influence on student career intentions

ABSTRACTBrexit, Britain's referendum to leave the European Union (EU), provided the backdrop for this study, although how or even if it will be implemented is uncertain. Most UK voters supported leaving the EU, yet an overwhelming majority of young people voted to remain. In an environment of economic and labor market ambiguity, we sampled 304 UK university students to examine Brexit's perceived impact on their career plans. Using Theory of Planned Behaviour, we found that students with higher internal locus of control intended to adapt career plans, although students who identified themselves as British were less proactive. Whilst most students aspired to follow a career path as an employee of a large company, nearly one third intended to become entrepreneurs, a path preferred by twice the number of males as females. Our results provide important insights for post-Brexit planning of educational policy and for businesses and labor markets throughout Europe.

Effects of Discovery, Iteration, and Collaboration in Laboratory Courses on Undergraduates' Research Career Intentions Fully Mediated by Student Ownership.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide a promising avenue to attract a larger and more diverse group of students into research careers. CUREs are thought to be distinctive in offering students opportunities to make discoveries, collaborate, engage in iterative work, and develop a sense of ownership of their lab course work. Yet how these elements affect students’ intentions to pursue research-related careers remain unexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we collected data on three design features thought to be distinctive of CUREs (discovery, iteration, collaboration) and on students’ levels of ownership and career intentions from ∼800 undergraduates who had completed CURE or inquiry courses, including courses from the Freshman Research Initiative (FRI), which has a demonstrated positive effect on student retention in college and in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We used structural equation modeling to test relationships among the design features and student ownership and career intentions. We found that discovery, iteration, and collaboration had small but significant effects on students’ intentions; these effects were fully mediated by student ownership. Students in FRI courses reported significantly higher levels of discovery, iteration, and ownership than students in other CUREs. FRI research courses alone had a significant effect on students’ career intentions.

Entrepreneurship education and its impact on the entrepreneurship career intentions: A Study of Algerian Students’ Entrepreneurial Intentions and Opportunity Identification (case study Université Amar Telidji)

Purpose - This study aims towards investigating the impact of entrepreneurship education by meansof variables that include: attitudes toward entrepreneurial behavior, personal standards and perceivedbehavioral control and on the basis of entrepreneurship career intentions of students from the Facultyof Economic Sciences, Business Sciences and Management Sciences at Laghouat University.Design/methodology - Depending on the design of a questionnaire directed at (46) for randomlyselected students, the study examines the extent to which students intend to participate inentrepreneurship in the near future. The Spearman correlation test and regression analysis were usedto test the relationships between entrepreneurship education and the entrepreneurship career intentionsto activate the components of planned behavior theory. Findings – It has been found thatentrepreneurship education had a positive correlation with the entrepreneurial intentions ofentrepreneurship. In addition, the results largely proved the validity of the planned behavior theory asan invaluable instructional tool for academics and trainers. It also assessed policy makers seeking tofind effective ways to promote the process of creating potential entrepreneurs. Recommendations -Ifone is to stimulate entrepreneurship in the educational or training community, the results of this studyprovide guidance by making many suggestions on how to improve leadership vigilance.

Career intentions of PhD students in nursing: A cross-sectional survey

BackgroundDespite the rapid growth of Chinese nursing PhD programs, little is known about the career intentions of students in this field. ObjectiveTo investigate the career intentions of nursing PhD students. DesignOnline cross-sectional survey. ParticipantsNursing PhD students at Chinese universities. MethodsAn online questionnaire was designed and the data were analyzed using SPSS. ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 31.53 ± 4.92 years, and most were female (89.9%), married (74.2%), and had been employed previously (69.7%). Most intended to work in the city where their family lived (34.8%) or near their previous workplace (32.6%). Most (60.7%) desired to work in an educational institution (e.g., a university or college). The most common expected salary was 8000–11,999 RMB/month. The work benefits perceived as indispensable were “Five Insurances and One Fund” (77.5%), good educational resources for children (59.6%), financial allowances for PhD graduates (52.8%), staff dormitories/housing subsidies (50.6%), and tenure (50.6%). Nursing education (75.3%) and research (70.8%) were the most favored fields. The key job characteristics were the opportunity to put strengths to fullest use (79.8%), time to conduct research (60.7%), and work-life balance (51.7%). The key research conditions included a good research incentive mechanism (77.5%), a Basic Scientific Research Foundation (68.5%), opportunity to apply to conduct research projects (66.3%), and the nursing team's atmosphere regarding research (64.0%), and 91.0% were eager to study abroad (e.g., as part of an international exchange). ConclusionsNursing PhD students would like to work in their hometown or near their previous workplace. Most preferred working in an educational institution, and the most popular fields were nursing education and research (rather than clinical care), despite the high demand of hospital management for nursing PhD graduates. Flexible work, high-quality research conditions, a certain salary, work benefits, and training were key expectations.

Cultivating minority scientists: Undergraduate research increases self-efficacy and career ambitions for underrepresented students in STEM

In this study, Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) is used to explore changes in the career intentions of students in an undergraduate research experience (URE) program at a large public minority-serving college. Our URE model addresses the challenges of establishing an undergraduate research program within an urban, commuter, underfunded, Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). However, our model reaches beyond a focus on retention and remediation toward scholarly contributions and shifted career aspirations. From a student's first days at the College to beyond their graduation, we have encouraged them to explore their own potential as scientists in a coordinated, sequential, and self-reflective process. As a result, while the program's graduates have traditionally pursued entry-level STEM jobs, graduates participating in mentored research are increasingly focused on professional and academic STEM career tracks involving post-graduate study. In addition to providing an increasingly expected experience and building students’ skills, participation in undergraduate research is seen to have a transformative effect on career ambitions for many students at MSIs. While undergraduate research is often thought of in context of majority-serving institutions, we propose that it serves as a powerful equalizer at MSIs. Building on the institutional characteristics that drive diversity, our students produce scholarly work and pursue graduate degrees, in order to address the long-standing under-representation of minorities in the sciences. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Impact of family capital & social capital on youth entrepreneurship – a study of Uttarakhand state, India

The research paper intends to interpret how the three forms of family capital viz. family’s financial capital, family’s man power capital and family’s human capital influences the career choice intention of students of HEI’s of Uttarakhand, India. Additionally the study also evaluates the impact of student’s individual social capital on his career intent. This is a quantitative study conducted at Uttarakhand state of India on a large sample of students studying in various professional courses of Uttarakhand. The research validates a positive relationship between the family’s financial capital and higher education intention of students. The study found no influence of family’s financial capital (measured as father’s annual income), manpower capital (measured as family size) and human capital (measured as father’s occupation) on career intentions of students. The study confirmed that there is a significant impact of students’ social capital network span on his career intentions, especially in taking up entrepreneurship as a career choice. Impact of a 5-Year Research-Oriented Medical School Curriculum on Medical Student Research Interest, Scholarly Output, and Career Intentions

The impact of research experiences on medical student career intentions is unclear. Short-term outcomes from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine’s five-year research curriculum show that most medical students can generate scholarly work during medical school and sustain a high level of interest in research as a career option.
