Evolution of the Interventional Radiology (IR) Pathway-Various Changes and Interrelation to Diagnostic Radiology (DR)

Interventional radiology continues to evolve into a more robust and clinically dynamic specialty underpinned by significant advancements in training, education, and practice. This article, prepared by members of the 2020-2021 Association of University Radiologists' task force of the Radiology Research Alliance, will review these developments, highlighting the evolution of interventional radiology pathways with attention to growing educational differences, interrelation to diagnostic radiology training, post-training practice patterns, distribution of procedures and future trends, amongst other key features important to those pursuing a career in interventional radiology as well as those in practice.

Perceptions of Junior Doctors in the United Kingdom Regarding a Career in Interventional Radiology

The role of robotics in interventional radiology: current status.

The evolution of medicine has moved from open procedures and non-targeted medications to minimally invasive therapies to treat complex problems with even more accuracy. Therefore clinicians choosing a career in interventional radiology are engraining themselves in the exciting future developments presented to the speciality. On the diagnostic radiology front multimodality fusion and functional imaging promises to further improve the capability of the radiologist to diagnose problems down to a molecular level and this dominates the health news pages related to the field. In interventional radiology the next big step to try and improve accuracy of targeted procedures is the introduction of robotics. One of the key note talks at the British Society of Interventional Radiology annual meeting 2014 was specifically related to this topic (1). In addition this was a topic discussed at TEDMED UK 2013 and highlighted that radiology can overcome some of the problems that have been encountered by surgical robots (2).

Abstract No. 375 - Medical student interventional radiology symposium: the emory experience

Purpose Medical students traditionally receive little exposure to the field of interventional radiology (IR) during medical school. The aim of this symposium is to introduce medical students to interventional radiology and motivate students to seek out research and future career opportunities within the field. Materials and Methods All medical and physician assistant students from Emory and other Southeastern medical schools are invited to attend the Emory medical student interventional radiology symposium, which includes lectures and a simulation lab. IR faculty members will hold 20-minute lectures centered on diseases treated by interventional radiologists with pictorial and video examples of procedures used to treat the disease. The simulation lab will allow hands on exposure with ultrasound, catheters, and other IR devices. Students will be given a Likert scale survey before and after the symposium (Figure 1A,B), to determine if the symposium increased student’s understanding of IR and motivated them to learn more about a career in the field. ANOVA will be used for statistical analysis with statistical significance defined as a p value Results 45 medical students and 10 physician assistant students are scheduled to attend the symposium. So far, students have expressed interest in learning more about IR and research opportunities. The results from the Likert scale survey as well as specific comments from the students will be presented at the SIR meeting. Conclusion The Emory symposium successfully introduced interventional radiology to medical students and motivated many students to seek out further opportunities within the field. Our experience also suggests the symposium format is a valuable means of motivating medical students to consider a residency in radiology and a future career in interventional radiology. Lastly, this symposium provides a successful and easily reproducible model for other medical schools to implement, thus increasing the number of students interested in interventional radiology across the country.

“Whatever happened to the class of 2000?” An outcome survey of potential interventional radiologists

To find out what final career choices were made by trainee doctors who had indicated a strong interest in pursuing a career in interventional radiology and to establish the reasons behind their final career choice. Eighty-eight doctors who attended a meeting in 2000 designed to promote interventional radiology as a career were questioned as to whether the meeting influenced their potential career choices and then further surveyed via postal questionnaire 5 years later to find out their eventual career choices. Of the 88 doctors who attended, 56 were radiology trainees and 32 were training in either medical or surgical specialties. There were 25 women and 63 men. Five years after the meeting, six are now interventional radiologists (6.8%) though four of these are still in a 6th year interventional radiology fellowship. A further 12 (13.6%) are systems based, predominantly diagnostic radiologists with an interest in intervention. Thirty-two (43.2%) are diagnostic radiologists who undertake little or no therapeutic intervention. Of the 32 non-radiologists who attended the meeting only three entered radiology and are still in training. Interventional radiology is a popular initial career choice amongst trainee doctors. However, only a small number eventually pursue the specialty. If the manpower shortage of interventional radiologists is to be addressed, there needs to be improvements in training, accreditation, career opportunities and working conditions.
