The impact of mentoring in higher education on student career development: a systematic review and research agenda

ABSTRACT Studies published over the last four decades provide the basis for a systematic review of the impact of mentoring in higher education (HE) on student career development. We review 73 papers published between 1986 and 2023 and develop a framework to examine the relationships between mentoring approaches and career development outcomes. Here, we distinguish between different student populations (female students, under-represented groups). Notwithstanding an overall positive verdict on mentoring's career development potential, with particular emphasis on career choice and transitioning behaviour, the results are not always positive, and many nuances in the data are evident. At a time of increased concern about student transitions into the labour market, practical implications can be derived which may strengthen mentoring's benefits, e.g. the value of peer mentoring for female students, and cultural proximity of mentors for under-represented minority students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. Key research recommendations include:(1) developing novel impact indicators related to emotion such as career inspiration and passion; (2) examining under-researched impact indicators related to non-traditional student careers (e.g. entrepreneurial intentions), and employment and socioeconomic impact indicators; and (3) investigating the role of context and mentoring content and delivery modalities, in helping to explain inconsistent findings across the reviewed papers.

Causes of Gender Bias in Chinas Education and Its Countermeasures

The existence of gender bias in education is a complex issue in the context of Chinese society. Through an in-depth study of the phenomenon of gender differences in China's cultural, historical, political, and economic contexts, this paper reveals the specific reasons behind it, its manifestations, and the effects it brings. Besides, some concrete suggestions and measures are also put forward. It can be concluded from the analysis that teachers hold different expectations and different educational attitudes towards students of different genders in the educational environment. The prejudice caused by such gender stereotyping will be consciously or unconsciously manifested in their teaching as well as in their contact with students. This will have an inescapable impact on students' academic development and career development. In order to eliminate gender discrimination in education, a series of measures need to be taken. Firstly, traditional cultural and socially perceived prejudices should be changed to improve the status and educational opportunities for women. Secondly, it is necessary to strengthen teachers' gender awareness and educational training so that they can focus on gender equality and justice in education. In addition, it is necessary to establish a fair and equal campus culture and evaluation system to encourage students to fulfil their potential and strengths.

The Performance Assessment of Chinese Students in College and the Role of English Language

This research paper addresses the importance of investigating local students’ perceptions on the effectiveness of English as a medium of communication in and out of the classroom. Interviews with semi-structured questions of intrinsic and extrinsic nature through five-Likert scale were conducted in 140 undergraduate students who have been pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Zhengzhou Normal University in China. Descriptive analysis and factor component analysis (FCA) used for obtaining the results. The intrinsic and extrinsic nature of findings demonstrate that English considerably impacts their academic progress and performance. Furthermore, the findings show that students are eager to accept, support, and encourage their friends to adapt English to generate new knowledge and information. The findings also imply that local English instructors should be paid well and have a strong social position as teaching faculty. The findings suggest that curriculum improvement, content adjustment, and frequent use of English in exploration approaches to instruction, with the ultimate objective of opening up new avenues of knowledge, may significantly improve English effectiveness in student performance and career development.

Constructing A Model of the Impact of Human Capital and Social Capital on the Employment Quality of Chinese University Graduates: Based on the Mediating Role of Career Development

Introduction: This article is based on the theories of human capital, social capital, social interaction, and collaborative governance. From the dual perspectives of human capital and social capital, combined with the mediating role of career development, it studies the factors that affect the quality of employment for university students and constructs a conceptual model to determine the mediating role of career development between human capital, social capital, and the quality of employment for university graduates. Through a large amount of literature and previous research theories, suitable employment quality indicators, human capital indicators, social capital indicators, and career development indicators were selected. This article reveals the influencing factors of improving the employment quality of university graduates, providing ideas for improving the employment quality of university graduates and promoting the improvement of the higher education system and the stable development of the social economy. Objective: It introduces a novel perspective on career development and explores the mediating role of career development in the impact of human capital and social capital on the employment quality of university graduates. This not only provides more objective and scientific guidance for university graduates' job values, self-awareness, and planning but also helps them better develop and cultivate their own human capital and social capital capability providing effective practical guidance. At the same time, it can provide objective analytical data for the reform of major settings in university education, the establishment of career courses, and the fair and reasonable formulation of employment policies, providing a new research perspective for studying the quality of employment of university graduates. Theoretical Framework: In the developmental stage, at least four economists have made outstanding contributions: Theodore W. Schultz and Gary Becker, Jacob Mincer and Edward Denison, respectively from different angles in different fields for the formation of the basic framework of the foundation, the modern sense of human capital theory was born, not only laid the theoretical foundation for the western education economics but also opened up a new field of western economics research. Method: The research of domestic and foreign scholars on the career development of university students is similar. Due to the differences in the focus, attention topics, and research methods, the dimensions of career development of university students are also defined differently. Results and Discussion: The theories of human capital and social capital have received attention and recognition from scholars as the basis for studying the quality of employment for university graduates. The impact of human capital and social capital on the quality of employment for university graduates is also significant. However, in existing research, there are not many studies that focus on the quality of employment for university graduates from the perspectives of schools and social governance, based on social interaction theory and collaborative governance theory. Specifically, there is a lack of systematic theoretical support and empirical exploration in exploring the impact of major differences and career development on the quality of employment for university graduates, and overall, it is still in the exploratory stage. Research Implications: The research results indicate that there is a significant correlation between career development, human capital, social capital, and the quality of employment for university graduates Originality/Value: This model is not yet tested in Chinese contexts.

Forecasting Student Employment Trends in Colleges and Universities Education Using Time Series Analysis Algorithms

Student employment trends in colleges have been evolving, with a notable shift towards internships, co-op programs, and other experiential learning opportunities. Colleges are increasingly emphasizing the importance of gaining practical work experience alongside academic studies to enhance students' employability. This trend reflects the growing demand from employers for graduates who possess not only theoretical knowledge but also relevant skills and hands-on experience. This study investigates student employment trends within Colleges and Universities education through the application of time series analysis algorithms. Utilizing historical data spanning five years from 2019 to 2023, the study examines the dynamics of student employment rates and explores the effectiveness of forecasting methodologies, including ARIMA and Ranking with ARIMA (R-ARIMA). The findings reveal a consistent upward trend in student employment rates over the study period, indicating a favorable environment for student career opportunities within higher education institutions. Moreover, the accuracy of forecasting models is demonstrated through the close alignment between predicted and observed employment rates. Optimal ARIMA configurations are identified, providing insights for strategic planning and resource allocation to support student career development and success. The findings reveal a consistent upward trend in student employment rates over the study period, with the percentage of employed students increasing annually. For instance, the student employment rate rises from 65% in 2019 to 77% in 2023. This indicates a favourable environment for student career opportunities within higher education institutions. Moreover, the accuracy of forecasting models is demonstrated through the close alignment between predicted and observed employment rates. Optimal ARIMA configurations are identified, with the best-performing model achieving an AIC score of 95.3 and a BIC score of 99.8. These configurations provide insights for strategic planning and resource allocation to support student career development and success.

This paper discusses the importance of this integration and its implementation strategy. Through the paths of strengthening the integration of curriculum content, enhancing the professionalism and the ability of the teaching team in Civic and Political Education, innovating the teaching methods, and building a multi-dimensional cooperation platform, it aims to realize the effective combination of knowledge and skills and values education, promote the all-round development of the students, to cultivate outstanding talents who are more adapted to the needs of the social development.

The Effect of Cloud Tracking-Based Integrated Supply Chain Learning Devices on Critical Thinking Skills, Learning Behavior, Student Career Development with Variable Moderation Learning Media

Purpose: In this context, integrated supply chain learning (ISCL) is defined as a learning approach that integrates learning resources from various parties. This research aims to examine the effect of using ISCL on students' critical thinking skills, students' learning behavior, students' career development, and this research will also consider moderating variables related to learning media. Theoretical framework: In the current era of globalization and technological progress, the need for learners equipped with relevant skills to face the challenges of the 21st century is increasingly urgent. Critical thinking skills, adaptive learning behavior, and career development are the three main aspects that are the focus in preparing students to be successful in an ever-changing world. Method/design/approach: This research methodology adopts a quantitative approach using surveys as a data collection instrument. Results and conclusion: The results show that learning media has a significant role in mediating the relationship between technological devices and students' critical thinking skills, learning behavior, and career development. Research implications: The implication of this research is the importance of integrating learning media in the education curriculum to prepare students with skills relevant to industry needs. Originality/value: This research has a broad and positive impact in improving the education system, strengthening links between the world of education and industry, and providing better opportunities for students to achieve success in the world of work.

Examining the relationship between self-efficacy, career development, and subjective wellbeing in physical education students

We investigated the relationship between self-efficacy and career development via subjective well-being of students majoring in physical education. Life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect were the componennts of subjective well-being. Participants were the 1381 adolescents with major in physical education with an age range of 18–22 years (Mage = 19.5 ± 1; females = 34.76%). Hayes PROCESS model was used to develop a multiple mediation model. The results suggest that higher self-efficacy leads to better career development. Further, a significant mediating role was played by negative and positive affect in case of the relationship between self-efficacy and career exploration, but life-satisfaction is not significant mediator. Conversely, life satisfaction and positive affect are significant mediators between self-efficacy and career adaptability but negative affect is not. The findings suggest that self-efficacy and subjective well-being benefit career development of adolescents in the physical education field.

The purpose of this study was to analyze vocational education research trends using network analysis and topic modeling. A total of 981 journals of vocational education research and vocational competency development research were analyzed from 2008 to 2022, and analyzed separately based on the period of government administration. As a result of network analysis, the main keywords identified were specialized vocational high schools, university students, employment, mediation effect, teachers, youth, performance, competency, self-efficacy, and programs. The top 25 keywords were restructured, divided into research subjects and research contents, and analyzed in detail across specific areas. Keywords were separated research subject, research content, and research method, and the research content was consisted of employment and labor, vocational career education, performance competency, psychological variables, and learning organization. The results were obtained by conducting an analysis of degree centrality, between centrality, and eigenvector centrality by government period. As a result of the topic modeling analysis, 8 topics were consisted of human resource development evaluation and performance analysis, employment and labor market transition for university graduates, development of professional competency for vocational competency development, career development for students from specialized vocational high schools, and human resource development and training, organizational development for individuals, learning, university students' career decisions, and specialized vocational high school curriculum. Based on these finding, suggestions for future research were derived.

Research on the Reform of College Students' Employment Guidance Curriculum from the Perspective of the Internet

This paper explores the optimisation path of college students' career development and employment guidance courses in the context of the Internet era. With the advent of the Internet era, college students' employment faces more opportunities and challenges. This article first analyses the impact of the Internet on college students' employment, including more employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, more diversified employment choices, higher employment ability requirements, and more comprehensive employment guidance. Then, the article points out the major problems in the construction of career development and employment guidance courses for college students, including the lack of awareness of the importance of employment guidance courses for college students in colleges and universities, the vague content of the courses, the imperfect system, the unified form of teaching, the lack of practical teaching, and the lack of capacity of teaching staff. Finally, this paper puts forward the optimisation path for the construction of college students' career development and employment guidance courses in the Internet era, including deepening teaching reform, strengthening team building, cultivating a good campus culture and other suggestions. Through the research of this paper, we aim to provide effective ways and strategies for colleges and universities to improve the quality of talent cultivation and solve the employment difficulties of college students.

Study on Learning Assurance of High-Impact Teaching in Consumer Behavior Course

High-impact teaching philosophy helps students to expand their learning, exercise their critical thinking skills and apply the professional knowledge they have learned, which not only promotes the learning effect during the school year, but also focuses on the career development of students. However, less research has focused on learning security under high-impact teaching concepts. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the assurance of high impact teaching in consumer behavior in the learning effect, and put forward suggestions. This study obtained data through course summary and office hour records, and concluded which measures were more effective through text analysis. The research finds that students' text analysis shows that practical training programs can best promote theoretical knowledge learning and ability training, and office hour can indeed help students establish career goals. Finally, it is suggested that schools should put forward an incentive scheme for high-impact teaching.

Evaluation of a Model of Transition-Related Instruction to Enhance Self-Directed Career Development of Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a transition-related instructional model (TRIO) for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The model promoted self-directed problem-solving concerning transition-related goals and career development. The TRIO model contained three instructional phases for problem-solving. Throughout the three phases, three essential elements were determined in the transition curriculum for the self-directed learning process, including transition-specific curriculum, self-determination instructions, and the circle of support. 79 junior high school students participated in this study doing group assignments. They were split into the experimental group (n = 36) with the TRIO instruction and the control group (n = 43). Scores on the Career Planning and Development Questionnaire before and after the intervention were analyzed. The results indicated that the experimental group showed significantly higher scores than the control group on the overall career competency and each sub-domain, and the patterns of score change were different between the experimental and control groups when applying the hierarchical linear model (HLM).

Students’ Motivation and Engagement in the Implementation of Individual Development Plan for Underrepresented Minority (URM) Students in Undergraduate STEM Training Programs

Despite recent progress, statistics show an urgent need for growth in the numbers of underrepresented minority (URM) students in STEM fields. An individual development plan (IDP) has been used to assist Ph.D. trainees in exploring career paths, developing short- and long-term career goals, and creating action plans to achieve these goals. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and many institutions require the completion of the IDP by graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty mentees to enhance career development. However, little information exists regarding how motivated and behaviorally engaged undergraduate URM undergraduate students are in using IDP as a tool to develop their STEM career pathway. In this study, researchers present data from the motivation levels and behavioral engagement factors that are associated with the effectiveness of the IDP with 20 URM students recruited for the REP Summer program. A total of 85% of students strongly agreed that the IDP was most effective in assessing and reflecting on their academic and professional goals. The mentorship needs were met by 80% of the students, while 75% of the students agreed that the IDP was very effective in helping to identify short-term and long-term goals for their undergraduate studies. Moreover, 70% of the students were satisfied with the IDP in developing an action plan, identifying short-term and long-term goals for their professional careers, and assessing their scientific skills, interests, and values. URM students are intrinsically and extrinsically motivated to implement the IDP and pursue careers in STEM. Findings suggest that URM students’ motivation and behavioral engagement levels impact the effectiveness of the implemented IDP with these students. There is a need to identify factors that enhance the effectiveness of the IDP to determine how to maximize the career development of URM students in STEM programs.

Enhancing business education through video: A conceptual model and research directions based on a systematic review

Video has become an important part of teaching and learning in business education. While literature has suggested various strategies and activities that have been implemented in video-based learning (VBL) environments and revealed their impact on student learning outcomes, there is a lack of a conceptual model for researchers and practitioners. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of 62 articles published in the past 20 years to propose the conceptual model. This model goes beyond cognitive domains and comprises three major components. The components are: learning outcomes include self-system, metacognitive system, and cognitive system; instructional design includes student career development, student skill development, and knowledge and concept learning; and effective video design includes content design, theory-driven design for human-computer interaction, and the use of generative AI. This model guides researchers and practitioners to research and teach business courses using VBL. We also suggested six future research directions, including investigating the relationships between instructional design and learning outcome and the applications of AI in VBL.

Improved professional competencies and leadership in PhD-prepared nurses and doctoral students after participating in the cross-national and web-based Nurse-Lead program

BackgroundDoctor of Philosophy (PhD)-prepared nurses are expected to exercise leadership in their various roles. Therefore, European nurse scholars developed a cross-national web-based Nursing Leadership and Mentoring Educational (Nurse-Lead) program. PurposeTo evaluate changes in leadership practices, professional and research competencies as well as career development of PhD-prepared nurses and doctoral nursing students after participation in the Nurse-Lead program. MethodsA pre-post-test evaluation was conducted. Surveys addressed leadership, professional and research competencies, and career development. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests. Content analysis was used for qualitative data. DiscussionThe 30 participants showed significant improvements in all leadership practices, professional competencies, and most research competencies. Participants reported increased confidence in decision-making, taking on new responsibilities, and becoming more visible within research teams. ConclusionWeb-based, international leadership and mentoring programs are promising tools for the leadership and professional development of PhD-prepared nurses and doctoral nursing students.

PARENTAL BACKGROUND AS DETERMINANT OF CAREER CHOICE AMONG STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES, ACCRA, GHANA

The aim of the study was to examine how parental background variables (education, occupation and income) serve as determinants of career choice among the students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra. The simple random technique was used to select 200 respondents for this study. The Parental Variable and Career Choice questionnaires were used in collecting data. Descriptive statistical tests were used in analyzing data with the aid of the Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) software. Frequency distribution tables, pie chart and bar graph, binomial test, chi square and Mann-Whitney test were used to fulfil the objectives of the study. The results showed that both parental educational and occupational background have influence on the career choice of the students. Parental income however, did not prove to have any influence on career choice. Gender difference was also not found to influence career choice amongst target population. It was concluded that, parental educational and occupational background have an influence on students’ career choice but parental income was not found to determine students’ career choice. It is, therefore, recommended that parents and other stakeholders in career development of students take into consideration influence of parental education and occupation on career development of students and use them in guiding, shaping, educating, and introducing students to surge into the world of career interest exploration and career choice. Students should be encouraged to choose role models whose educational and occupational levels placed them high on good career progression to become their images of inspiration in career choice and preference.

Supporting the Professional and Career Development of Doctoral Students

A doctoral student is someone studying for a doctoral degree, which is generally considered to be the highest academic qualification a university can award. The student develops research experience, while making an in-depth and original contribution to knowledge. They are supervised by university staff members (usually there are two, or a small panel) who train, mentor, and support the doctoral student. Professional and career development refers to support that helps students to not only grow as individuals and independent researchers, but to also have the option to successfully pursue either academic or non-academic roles after graduation. While this entry considers some international contexts, it is particularly oriented to the United Kingdom (UK) model, and to the most common doctoral degree, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Cultivation Strategy of Higher Vocational Students' Autonomous Learning Ability under the Background of "Internet +"

Autonomous learning ability is an essential ability for outstanding talents. The future society under the background of the "Internet +" is a learning society that requires everyone to have the ability to learn autonomously. The learning status, career development, and social environment of higher vocational students require them to have a certain degree of autonomous learning ability. In the process of education, emphasis should be placed on cultivating students' autonomous learning ability, enabling them to develop good learning habits, master correct learning methods, and improve effective learning efficiency. All of these will promote students to autonomous learning, active learning, and exploring Learning. The research team applied the learning theories of humanism and constructivism, as well as social cognitive theory, to systematically explore three guiding strategies for higher vocational students to autonomous learning, including updating the concept of autonomous learning for students and educators, stimulating students' motivation for autonomous learning, and creating a good environment for college students to autonomous learning, enhance students' ability to use internet resources and platforms correctly for autonomous learning.

Influence of Parenting Style, Teacher Support and Academic Self-efficacy on Academic Achievement

There is no doubt that academic achievement (AA) plays an undeniable important role in students personal growth, social position and career development. Throughout history, the influencing factors of AA have always been a topic of common concern in the field of education internationally. Previous studies have shown that parenting style (PS), teacher support (TS), and academic self-efficacy (AS) all have significant total influences on AA. The aim of this study is to summarize the methods and results of some relevant researches on the impact of PS on AA, the impact of TS on AA, and the impact of AS on AA. This study concludes that PS, TS and AS are all positively related to AA. This study further analyzes the characteristics, advantages as well as shortcomings of the existing researches, provides some suggestions for improving academic achievements based on this, and looks forward to the future of academic achievement research.
