Influencing Factors in Teaching Career Choices in Cambodia in Teacher Education Colleges: A Conceptual Framework

An education system should strive to attract qualified teachers and teacher candidates who have a high degree of professional commitment to meet the society requirements these days as well as, in the future, toward country development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the decision to teach career choices and aspirations among primary and lower secondary school teachers in Cambodia and student teachers at teacher education colleges (TECs). This study was synthesized from several previous studies, review papers, academic publications, public organization sources, instructional resources and empirical investigations. Four main factors, namely, the influence of others, including family, friends, teachers and mass media; motivational influences; sociocultural factors; and teaching as a fallback career, influence the decision to choose teaching as a career. The implications of the findings from the various sources have been discussed in this study. This study can help relevant people, as well as other researchers, to be aware of the influencing factors in career choice so that they can refine recruitment policies, increase their actions and efforts, and enter a preparation program for teaching careers in the Cambodian context.

Balancing the Ikigai: Aberystwyth University undergraduate students’ perceptions of careers in a modern world

In a world where career dynamics are ever changing, with a rapid shift from traditional to non-traditional careers, the needs and values of employees, and the very idea of what a career can be, are evolving too. The prominent factors in career choice, motivation and satisfaction, are represented in the theory of Ikigai, a concept focused on finding values and meaning in life in order to live happier. This qualitative study uses inductive thematic analysis to investigate the priorities of UK undergraduate students regarding their future careers. Seven semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis were conducted to explore contemporary students’ perspectives of careers. Recurring themes indicate that participants seek a career path that prioritises meaningful work over high financial reward, hierarchising meeting personal needs, passions, and missions before meeting the needs of society and employers. These balanced preferences reflect the model of Ikigai, illustrating how career concepts are changing over time. Contemporary perspectives offer insight into the workforce’s search for meaning in balanced professional careers.

Developmental Trajectories of Adolescents' Math Motivation: The Role of Mindset and Perceptions of Informal STEM Learning Site Inclusivity.

Motivation is a key factor in engagement, achievement, and career choices in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While existing research has focused on student motivation toward math in formal school programs, new work is needed that focuses on motivation for those involved in informal STEM programs. Specifically, the role of math mindset and perceived inclusivity of informal STEM sites (to those of varying gender and ethnic backgrounds) on longitudinal trajectories of adolescents' math motivation has not been explored. This study investigates longitudinal changes in math expectancy, interest, and utility values and the effects of math fixed mindset, math growth mindset, and perceptions of the inclusivity of informal STEM learning sites on these changes for adolescents participating in STEM programs at these informal sites in the United Kingdom and the United States (n = 249, MT1age = 15.2, SD = 1.59). Three latent growth curve models were tested. The data suggest that math expectancy, interest, and utility values declined over three years. Growth mindset positively predicted changes in utility, while fixed mindset negatively predicted changes in utility. Inclusivity positively influenced the initial levels of utility. Girls reported lower initial expectancy than boys. Age influenced both the initial levels and rate of change for expectancy. Older adolescents had lower levels of expectancy compared to their younger counterparts; however, they had a less steep decline in expectancy over three years. These findings suggest that designing inclusive learning environments and promoting growth mindset may encourage math motivation.

The intersection of sex and field: an examination of career choice factors and dropout intentions in STEM and non-STEM degrees

ABSTRACT The under-representation of women in male-dominated STEM fields is a worldwide concern. However, there are other academic fields, like some non-STEM degrees, where female students are over-represented. Previous research has identified five critical factors influencing student participation rates: career choice, satisfaction, self-esteem, discrimination, and dropout. Based on a sample of 402 students, this study examines the educational experiences of female students in male-dominated STEM degrees compared to those in female-dominated non-STEM degrees. The study also compares results between male students in STEM and non-STEM degrees. The findings reveal that STEM female students are less likely to choose their studies based on vocation, associated with dropout intentions. Moreover, STEM female students have higher dropout intentions and feel less self-esteem. For female STEM students, dropout intentions are related to self-esteem, discrimination, and satisfaction. This study highlights differences between minority groups in STEM and non-STEM degrees and offers valuable information to address the under-representation of female students in technical fields.

An Interview-Based Study of the Factors Influencing the Quality of Professional Training of Science Education Graduates

The proposal of the strategy of developing the country through science education has clarified China’s demand for the development of the science and education industry and the cultivation of science and education talents, and the birth of Science Education majors is an important link in the cultivation of scientific literacy. Based on the grounded theory, we interviewed three Science Education graduates from a university and coded the interview data by using NVivo 12.0 to find eight important factors affecting their professional training and employment choices. The factors are “social factors,” “individual career choice factors,” “campus resources,” “employment advantages,” “professional self-development,” “teacher factors,” “planning for further education and employment,” and “student motivation.” This study analyzes the interaction between the influencing factors, constructs a theoretical model of the influencing factors of the quality of Science Education professional training, explores the problems of the training process of Science Education majors and employment dilemmas, and puts forward corresponding suggestions.

Adolescents' Perceptions of Mother's Career Involvement in Academic Achievement

This research aims to describe adolescents' perceptions of the dual role of career mothers, the involvement of career mothers in education, and the meaning of career mothers' involvement. Three research subjects met the research criteria, namely Indonesian citizens, aged 12 - 21 years, and had a career mother. The research method used is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach with data collection techniques using in-depth interview methods. Research findings show that adolescents perceive the dual role of career mothers positively and negatively. The involvement of career mothers in adolescents' education is a form of adolescents' positive perception of career mothers, while negative perceptions are mostly related to lack of communication and togetherness due to mothers' busy schedules. Career mothers are involved in adolescent education through material and emotional support. Research also finds that the effectiveness of implementing the dual role of career mother can also be a factor in adolescents' career choices. The overall research results show that mothers' career involvement in education is perceived as having an influence on adolescents' academic achievement.

Career Choice Factors and Clinical Performance among Health Sciences Students

The issue of youths’ employment decisions has piqued the curiosity of many people because it could shape future life. The study explores the association between career choice factors and clinical performance among 112 final-year health sciences students. An online questionnaire found that educational qualifications, lifestyle, ability to interact with others, job availability, and parental advice significantly correlated with clinical performance. The career choice factor is crucial because it impacts academic achievement and future career prospects. Institutions of higher learning should provide information on job descriptions and career opportunities to aid career decision-making, particularly for the health sciences profession.

What Motivates First-generation College Students to Consider an IT Career? An Integrative Perspective

A career in information technology (IT) presents a viable source of economic advancement for college graduates, yet ethnic minority students remain underrepresented in the IT workforce. Such underrepresentation is often exacerbated by their first-generation student (FGS) status. It, however, remains unclear what causes the discrepancy between FGSs and their counterparts in terms of their choice to enter into an IT career. To address this gap, this study aims to reveal the factors motivating FGSs to consider an IT career and examines the association of influencing factors with personal and demographic factors (gender, race, ethnicity). This qualitative research overlays capital theory and social cognitive career theory to develop an integrated sensitizing framework and draws on individual difference theory in interpreting the findings. Our analysis of the open-ended narrative responses of 193 surveys collected from a minority-serving university revealed 10 key factors influencing IT career choice. A theoretical model incorporating individual differences, generational status, and environmental influences is proposed to advance the discussion of influencing factors in IT career choice toward further theory building and empirical testing. The paper concludes with implications for motivating the IT career choice of the ethnic minority, first-generation student population.

Background: One of the greatest challenges of the XXI. century is the changing of the medical profession. Beside of the process of deprofessionalism, the demographic and social composition of the medical society have also been altering. More women became medical doctors in recent years. Parallel to these changes, the career motivations of medical students are transforming. Method: 175 first year medical students from the Semmelweis University participated in our study. They wrote about their career motivations based on a fixed set of viewpoints. The narratives were analysed by both quantitative and qualitative (content analysis) methods. Results: The female students are committed to medical profession at younger ages. The most important factors in career choices are altruism and scientific interest for both genders. There is a male dominance in career motivations of experiences, knowledge and benefits. Conclusions: The changing face of career motivations has a significant impact on both the physicians and the patients. This issue opens up possibilities for following research.

The Influence of Role Modeling and Mentorship on Primary Care Career Choice: What Can Be Gleaned From 30 Years of Research?

Role modeling and mentoring are key aspects of identity formation in medical school and likely influence student specialty choice. No reviews have examined the ways that mentorship relationships impact primary care career choice. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify articles describing the influence of role models and mentorship on primary care interest, intention, or choice. A content analysis of the included articles determined which articles focused on mentorship versus role modeling and the definitions of each. We coded articles as groundwork, effectiveness, or impact depending on the methodology and outcomes of each study. Searches yielded 362 articles, of which 30 met inclusion criteria. Three offered definitions of role modeling, and one compared and contrasted definitions of mentoring; 17 articles laid groundwork that indicated that role modeling and mentorship are important factors in career choice and specifically in primary care. Thirteen articles reported the effectiveness and impact of role modeling and mentoring in influencing intent to enter primary care or actual career choice. Primary care and non-primary care physicians influenced student interest, intent, and choice of primary care careers; this influence could be positive or negative. Role modeling and mentorship influence primary care career choice. Very few articles defined the studied relationships. More work on the impact of mentorship and role modeling on career choice is needed.

Factors Influencing Career Choice Among Social Work Graduates

In recent years, career decision-making has attracted research attention, especially choosing careers among graduates. Making informed and appropriate career choices are positively related to work performance and career success. The present study investigates the factors influencing career choice among social work graduates. A sample of 417 social work graduates was recruited to complete the survey. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Our results show that there is a positive correlation between environmental, interpersonal, institutional, external, internal factors and career choice. Additionally, multiple regression analysis indicates that external and internal factors influence career choice among graduates. The present findings contribute to the general discussion about the influential factors in graduates' career choices. University administrators must develop career guidance and counseling programs more broadly in universities to support graduates in making appropriate career choices.

Exploring the impact of shared cognitive and emotional factors in career decision-making among adolescents through qualitative inquiry

Along with other skills, an adolescent need to develop adequate decision-making skills as several important decisions that will have an impact on their future will be taken during this period. One such important decision that needs to be taken is regarding academic and career choices. Most of these choices are influenced by cognitive factors or emotional factors. Keeping in view the prior research gaps, the aim of this paper is to explore the shared cognitive and emotional factors influencing adolescents career choices living in small city. In depth interviews were taken from ten higher secondary school students studying at different colleges in Multan through a convenient sampling technique. Data were analyzed with the help of thematic analysis. Semantic and inductive approach was used to generate themes. Results of the study revealed the autonomy in career choice, stigmas attached with the career choice, individual factors in career choice, and impact of the program on mental and emotional health. It was observed that male students were given a choice in terms of their career as compared to females. Also, male students were more confident and stress-lived as they opted for their desired careers. On the contrary female students feel depressed, helpless and reported emotional and mental health issues due to the unavailability of career choices and forced career on them. The study helped in understanding the impact of program of the study on students cognitive and emotional health. It can be implied from the present study that gender differences still prevail in our education system. Due to scarcity of career options available and the pressure to get admission from the parents in prestigious institutes are making adolescents compromise on their mental and emotional health. Therefore, a career guidance plan should be introduced in education policy for adolescents' mental health. Also, it was also the first study which supported the concept of shared cognitive and emotional experiences.

Abstract This research aims to define factors that influence accounting students in choosing their careers after graduated. There are two gaps of previous studies that we try to cover in this study. Firstly, previous studies only focused on one university or one region in a country. Secondly, they only examined a specific career choice, mostly as public accountants. This study is conducted on Indonesian accounting students and it set the respondents to choose their careers in the beginning and fill the questionnaire based on that career choices. The output of this study is career choice factors of Indonesian accounting students’. By understanding those factors, this study provide awareness and insights for parents, lecturers, and universities to prepare students for their future careers. The results imply the need for collaboration between family and university. On one side, parents should not push a certain career path to students, rather they should encourage students to choose careers suitable for needs and expectations. On the other side, university should ensure that the quality of their graduates suits to the needs and the expectation of users. Data were collected by conducting an online survey to the population of final-year accounting students in Indonesia. Three hundred and fifty-eight respondents participated in this survey. Factor analysis was used for data analysis. The result of this research confirmed all factors that determine career choices of accounting students. Those factors are social values, rewards, job market certainty, professional recognition, work environment, and family. Interestingly, the family factor is divided into two factors: family support and family environment.

Earning opportunities and informal payment as influencing factors in medical students\u2019 speciality choice

BackgroundThe Hungarian primary care system faces a severe shortage of family physicians. Medical students’ perceptions of family medicine need to be known and medical students need to be given appropriate and comprehensible information about this speciality. The expected future salary is an important factor in career choice. Most of the family doctors are self-employed and the practices have a corrected capitation-type financing. Although the majority of health care services are covered by social health insurance and are provided for the insured patients free of charge, informal payment is an existing phenomenon with different motivations and consequences. This study aimed to investigate medical students’ knowledge about their future earning opportunities and their attitudes towards informal payment.MethodsA cross sectional survey with a self-administered questionnaire was conducted. Each of the four Hungarian medical universities were represented by their medical students who attended family medicine lectures in person from December 2019 to April 2020. The students were asked about their career plans, about their estimations of current and ideal expected salaries and about the effect of expected income for the choice of specialisation. Their attitudes towards informal payment were assessed.ResultsResponse rate was 67.3% (N = 465/691). Almost two-thirds of the participants were women. Only 5% of the respondents (N = 23/462) plan to work as a family doctor in the future. The vast majority (91.9%) of the students had already thought about their future income. On a 10-point Likert scale (1 = ‘no influence’, 10 = ‘very big influence’) 76% answered that the expected future income exerts a considerable (≥5 Likert points) influence on their career choice in general. The mean of the ideal expected monthly income of the residents, GPs and other specialists was €1154 ± 648, €1696 ± 904 and €2174 ± 1594, respectively. The mean of the monthly income for a GP, as estimated by the studenst, was €1140 in rural and €1122 in urban settings. More than four-fifths of the students (N = 375/453) rejected the practice of informal payment.ConclusionsExpected salaray is one important aspect in the career choice of medical students, students wish to have more information on this topic. The reported ideal incomes are higher than those expected. This points to a relevant gap. However, most of the students do not accept informal payment as a possibility to close this gap. The expected and the ideal income differ from the real incomes of Hungarian GPs – this indicates the need of bringing objectoive information to the students to enhance attractivity of GP as a carer choice.

Career refers to the term profession and a person’s journey or progress in a field. Choosing the right career is very important to ensure that it is in line with the qualifications and skills possessed as well as one's interests and personality in determining the success of life. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine career choice factors. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of Gerik Community College students on career choice factors. There are three factors in this study which are family factors, peer factors, and salary factors. This study is a descriptive quantitative study that uses a questionnaire as a research instrument. There were 68 students of Gerik Community College in the July 2019 session who were respondents for this study. The study used a simple random sampling technique to make a selection of respondents. The research data obtained through the questionnaire was analyzed using score mean and T-Test. The results of the study found that all factors obtained a high mean score but family factors are the main factors influencing students in a career choice that is a mean score of 4.39. Statistical analysis found no significant differences between gender with the factors studied. Indeed, student gender did not play a role in determining the career choice factors for this study.

A cross-sectional study exploring attitudes of first year medical students towards psychiatry and factors they identified that would help stimulate their interest

AimsPsychiatry has had long standing recruitment difficulties. Many efforts have been made to explore strategies that encourage interest in the specialty, with early university experience being an important factor in ultimate career choice. The Royal College of Psychiatrists ‘Choose Psychiatry’ guidance for medical schools outlines four key areas of focus: teaching excellence, placement quality, leadership and enrichment activities, with other research reporting similar conclusions. The aim of this study was to assess attitudes towards psychiatry amongst first year medical students, examine what input they would welcome from psychiatrists at this stage of their career and consider if their wishes are in keeping with the ‘Choose Psychiatry’ guidance.MethodAll first-year medical students at St George's University of London were approached in October 2019 and offered the opportunity for early psychiatry exposure. 60 students were recruited. Data were collected in November 2019 via an online questionnaire comprising of baseline demographics, the 30-item Attitudes Towards Psychiatry questionnaire (ATP-30) and a free-text question asking what students would like from psychiatry at this stage of their education. Quantitative data were analysed using Excel, whilst qualitative data were analysed thematically.ResultThe mean ATP-30 score was 113.83 (SD 12.57, range 70-135). Gender, ethnicity and religious background were not associated with a change in ATP score. Undergraduates’ attitudes were more positive than those of postgraduates (independent t-test revealed a p-value of 0.087). Seven themes were identified outlining what students wanted from psychiatry, the most prominent being: (a) learning about the lifestyle of a psychiatrist and finding a role model, (b) exploring the patient perspective, (c) exploring the interaction between psychiatry and specialities and (d) having an opportunity to develop communication skills.ConclusionThe findings demonstrate higher ATP-30 results than previous literature has reported, potentially due to mental health awareness campaigns in recent years. As undergraduates were found to have a higher mean score, targeting them for additional psychiatry contact may be beneficial. Themes identified by students in this study support ‘Choose Psychiatry’ guidance, whilst also highlighting the potential for combining some psychiatry with other specialties in the curriculum. Integration with communication skills teaching might help engage those not initially psychiatry-inclined. Further study will be required to establish whether implementing the suggested strategies can lead to improvement in student ATP-30 scores and ultimately increased recruitment rates.

Medical Student Leadership in the Student Oncology Society: Evaluation of a Student-Run Interest Group.

At our institution, we aim to foster interest in oncology through the Student Oncology Society (SOS). The SOS was formed in 2010 and since then has hosted numerous oncology-related events, such as career panels, patient survivorship celebrations, and movie screenings. The purpose of this study is to report the experiences from former student leaders of the SOS, particularly how their participation informed their career choice. Complete survey responses were obtained from 26 of 32 former SOS student leaders (response rate 81.3%). Out of the 26 respondents, 19 (73.1%) are pursuing an oncology-related specialty. The three most common competencies that were affected by participation in SOS, noted by 21 (80.8%) respondents, were learning about pathways to careers in oncology, understanding the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, and coordinating events. By mean Likert score, the most important factors in career choice for respondents who eventually pursued an oncology field were having a mentor in oncology (4.44), a clinical rotation in oncology (4.31), research involvement (4.22), and SOS involvement (3.17). While SOS involvement played a role in career choice among our student leaders, having a mentor was cited to be the most important factor for choosing an oncology career. Thus, implementation of formal mentorship initiatives within the framework of oncology interest groups should be explored.

Factors Associated with a Career in Primary Care Medicine: Continuity Clinic Experience Matters.

Due to concerns of inadequate primary care access, national agencies like the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) support primary care (PC) residencies. Recent research demonstrates that up to 35% of PC alumni lost interest in PC during residency. These alumni who lost interest noted that their continuity clinic experience influenced their career choice. The purpose of this study was to identify the specific aspects of PC residency experience that influenced career choice. We conducted a cross-sectional electronic survey of a PC internal medicine alumni cohort (2000-2015) from a large, academic residency. Our primary predictor was PC career and our primary outcome was influential factors on career choice. We performed chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests for categorical variables and t tests for continuous variables. Of the 317 PC alumni in the last 15 years, 305 were contacted. One hundred seventy-two (56%) responded with 94 (55%) reporting current careers in PC and 78 (45%) in non-PC fields. Ninety-four percent of respondents expressed interest prior to residency, while only 68% remained interested at the conclusion of residency. Sixty-one percent of PC alumni rated the overall clinic experience as the most influential factor towards their ultimate career choice. The patient-physician relationship was the most frequently endorsed positively influential factor in career choice in both groups (95% of PC alumni, 76% non-PC). There was no difference among all alumni in common frustrations of clinic including clerical duties, encounter documentation, or visit length. Similarly, resident debt did not differ between groups. Strong interpersonal relationships with patients and clinic mentors were associated with a PC career. These factors may compensate for the reported frustrations of clinic. Enhancing patient and mentor relationships may increase the retention of PC residents in ambulatory careers and may help address the current and projected shortage of primary care physicians.

Perception and impact of influencing factors of nursing as a career choice amongst Higher Secondary School Students: Descriptive study

In an era of declining enrolments in nursing, it is vital to identify the significant decline in the admissions for the Basic B.Sc. program in nursing. The key themes that emerged in this descriptive study of 200 interviewees were the use of the career choice questionnaire for high school students, their perceptions and influence on nursing choice as an influencing factor in career choice. Nursing was viewed as a very contentious career choice. Nowhere have the respondents viewed nursing as an independent practicing profession and one that requires higher cognitive potentials. Their choices of careers were medicine, engineering and information technology. According to themtheir expectations of a career did not match with nursing career. The final theme is that respondents did not choose nursing because they wanted to be unique, and adding nursing would waste their examination scores. There is an urgent need to take action and develop strategies to attract recruited nursing students. As a priority, we need to promote many aspects of modern nursing and the stereotyped image of nursing among high school students, which is crucial.

The Great Gamble? A Mixed-Methods Study of Factors In˜fluencing Medical Students in Specialty Choice.

Career planning remains relatively unexplored as a domain of medical education. Our aim was to explore the career planning journey undertaken by medical students. Results Approximately one third of participants had decided their future specialty. Important factors in career choice were 'interest in specific [specialty] aspects,' 'work-life balance,' 'personality type' of others in the specialty, an enjoyable experience on rotation and role models. Negative influential factors included poor conduct of doctors encountered and negative portrayals of specialities by practicing doctors. Conclusion The undergraduate and early postgraduate periods are formative times in career planning for junior doctors. Students and interns/FY1s are strongly influenced by doctors in the clinical setting, and clinicians should be aware of this power to exert both positive and negative influence.
