Comparison of Mannequin-Based Simulation Training Method with Virtual Training Method on Nursing Students’ Learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Controlled Randomized Parallel Trial

Abstract Background: The use of different educational methods and programs, such as simulation and virtual training, plays an important role in effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) learning for nursing students. This study was conducted with the aim of comparing mannequin-based simulation training with virtual training on CPR learning among nursing students. Materials and Methods: This parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2022. We selected 73 nursing undergraduate students and randomly assigned them to two groups: mannequin-based simulation and virtual training groups. The knowledge, attitude, and performance of CPR in both groups were evaluated and compared before, immediately after, and 1 month after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using independent t-test and the repeated-measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: Within-group differences were significant in both mannequin-based simulation and virtual training groups in terms of knowledge, attitude, and CPR performance before and after training, as well as between before and 1 month after training (p < 0.001). In addition, the mean performance of simulation group students was significantly higher than the virtual group (p < 0.001), but no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of knowledge and attitude dimensions before training, after training, and 1 month after training. Conclusions: Both mannequin-based simulation and virtual training methods increase CPR learning. Considering that students’ knowledge and attitude increase significantly using both training methods and the performance of students in the simulation group is better than in the virtual group, the use of a multimodal approach is recommended for CPR training of nursing students.

Assessing the quality of chest compressions with a DIY low-cost manikin (LoCoMan) versus a standard manikin: a quasi-experimental study in primary education

Extending the access to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to a wider public is an important step in increasing survivability of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. However, often price and maintenance of CPR manikins are barriers that prevent training at schools. This study aims to evaluate the learning of hands-only (HO) CPR by practicing with a low-cost manikin (LoCoMan) with visual qualitative feedback and to compare the results with the skills acquired by practice on a conventional manikin. A quasi-experimental study with 193 schoolchildren (10 to 12 years old) who were allocated to two groups: the LoCoMan group was taught via an integrative approach (science combined with physical education (PE)) and practiced on a handmade manikin, and a control group practiced in a traditional setting with a commercial manikin (Resusci Junior, Laerdal, Norway). All participants practiced for 1 hands-on skill session before performing a post-test on an instrumented CPR manikin. The outcomes including HO-CPR performance variables were compared between groups. The LoCoMan and control groups both achieved acceptable percentage of HO-CPR quality (57% and 71%, p = 0.004). Among 6th-graders, there were no significant differences in HO-CPR quality between LoCoMan 68% and control 71%, p = 0.66. The control group achieved better chest compression depth while the LoCoMan group showed more compressions with adequate chest recoil. Conclusion: Schoolchildren are able to build and use a low-cost manikin with visual feedback. The integrative learning approach used in this study may be a feasible alternative methodology for training and learning HO-CPR in schools when commercial manikins are not available.What is Known:• Access to CPR training should be universal and independent of age, location, financial means, or access to qualified instructors.• Scientific societies promote the implementation of CPR in schools, so that teachers and schoolchildren can play a multiplier role in their environment, but the gap in CPR learning is related to cultural, economic factors or access to resources and materials.What is New:• LoCoMan may be a useful device for teaching and learning CPR in schoolchildren from the age of 10 and upwards.• LOCOMAN shows that it is feasible and possible to build a low-cost manikin (about €5 in the European Region) and to integrate it into an integrative educational project, and outlines how this could be done. this approach can be an incentive for teachers to attempt teaching CPR, but also for education outside the formal environment.

Knowledge and attitude toward cardiopulmonary resuscitation among students at a public Saudi University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among university students in Saudi Arabia. The goal was to gain insights into CPR awareness, training rates, and factors influencing emergency bystander response. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted targeting students from Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Demographic factors such as age, gender, nationality, college affiliation, and academic level were analyzed. The participants' awareness and practice of CPR, motivations for learning CPR, attitude toward CPR, and perceptions of effective strategies to increase CPR knowledge were assessed through an online questionnaire. Results: The majority of participants (56.2%) reported having information about CPR, with movies/TV shows and the internet serving as the primary sources of knowledge. However, only 9.9% had encountered a CPR situation; among those, only 37% performed resuscitation. Lack of knowledge was the main reason for not performing CPR (71.1%). Most participants (82.8%) called the emergency number during a medical emergency, but only 18.6% had undergone CPR training. The participants expressed a high willingness (91.6%) to learn CPR, with perceived personal benefit being the primary motivation. Increasing publicity (73.7%) and offering free training courses (68.0%) were identified as effective ways to enhance CPR knowledge. Conclusion: The study revealed a need for improved CPR awareness and training among university students. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing knowledge gaps, implementing mandatory CPR training as a graduation requirement, and increasing public awareness through media campaigns.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global health problem with a high incidence and mortality rate as well as survival rates. The willingness of the community as a bystander to perform CPR on victims of OHCA is an important factor in increasing the survival rate. Purpose: To identify the student’s willingness as bystanders Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in Jember Regency. Methods: This research is a quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach in the form of analytical descriptive. The number of respondents was 245 students of class VIII SMP Negeri in Jember Regency using simple random sampling. Result: The results showed that the majority of school students were willing to do CPR as bystanders as much as 66.1%. The unavailability of school students as bystanders for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was influenced by experience and training, respectively, as much as 100% of the total 158 students who answered not willing. Conclusion: This study shows that the majority of students in SMP N Jember Regency are not willing to be CPR bystanders, so training or learning with appropriate methods is needed to increase the number of CPR bystanders who are willing to help victims of OHCA. A six-year teaching life supportive first aid program to eventually generate peer trainer pupils: a prospective case control study

BackgroundOut of hospital cardiac arrest is a life-threatening condition. To improve the chances of survival, lay-person cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation (CPR) is a crucial factor. Many bystanders fail to react appropriately, even if life supporting first aid (LSFA) programs and campaigns including CPR tried to increase the handling of basic cardiac life support. To achieve an enhanced learning of CPR a pupil’s grade after grade teaching program was established in a school with medical students.MethodsThe learning of CPR was investigated in a prospective, case-controlled study at an international school. Pupils (12 ± 3 years old) joining our LSFA courses (n = 538, female: 243, attendance for evaluation: 476) were compared to a control group (n = 129, female: 52, attendance for evaluation: 102). Surveys and quality of CPR (QCPR%) through a computer linked “Resusci Anne” dummy were compared with Chi-squared tests, t-tests pair wisely, and by one-way ANOVA.ResultsKnowledge and skills on the “Resusci Anne” were significantly better in trained grade 9 pupils compared to the control group (QCPR, 59 vs. 25%). The number of LSFA courses each grade 9 student had, correlated with improved practical performance (r2 = 0.21, p < 0.001). The willingness to deliver CPR to strangers increased with improved practical performance. Attitudes towards performing CPR were high in all participating grades.ConclusionRepetitive teaching LSFA to grade 5–9 pupil’s grade after grade by medical students has been successfully established. Pupils who finish the program will eventually be able to teach LSFA to younger students. This is furthermore a good way of sharing a “learning by teaching” role and it enables to have more pupils as trainers who can provide instruction to a larger number of pupils with the purpose of having a better-trained population in LSFA.

Effects of different cardiopulmonary resuscitation education interventions among university students: A randomized controlled trial.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education for the public may improve bystander intention to perform CPR on cardiac arrest patients. Studies have shown that different CPR education intervention methods can improve learning performance, with key indicators including attitude toward to CPR, intention to perform CPR, and degree of CPR knowledge and skills. The present study compared the traditional face-to-face method to hybrid and virtual reality (VR) methods to observe difference in learning performance and length of performance retention. This study adopted randomized controlled trial to compare CPR learning performance between traditional face-to-face, hybrid, and VR methods. Participants from each intervention group completed a pretest and 2 posttests. The measurement tools included an attitude and intention questionnaire, knowledge examination, and skill examination with a RESUSCI ANNE QCPR ® manikin. The performance among all participants in pretest showed no significant difference between the intervention groups, indicating no difference in their background attitude, knowledge, and skill level. Significant differences were observed in the average degree of intention to perform CPR between the hybrid and traditional groups in 1st and 2nd posttest. Compared to the pretest results, the posttests revealed significantly higher attitude toward CPR, intention to perform CPR, knowledge examination results, accuracy of overall chest compression, accuracy of CPR procedure, accuracy of AED usage, accuracy of chest compression rate, and accuracy of chest compression depth. The average time to reattending CPR learning and practice session was 11-12 weeks reported by participants. The hybrid and VR methods to CPR education resulted in the same level of improvement in learning performance as traditional face-to-face teaching. The suggested frequency for renewing CPR knowledge and skills is 12 weeks which may be considered in new strategies aimed at promoting CPR education and exposure to the public.

Pediatric Ventilation Skills by Non-Healthcare Students: Effectiveness, Self-Perception, and Preference

Since a great number of infant cardiopulmonary arrests occur outside of the hospital, it is crucial to train laypersons in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, especially those professionals that will work with infants and children. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efectiveness of ventilations performed by professional training students. The secondary objective was to analyze the preference between different ventilation and chest-compression methods. The sample consisted of 32 professional training students, 15 preschool students, and 17 physical education students. The activity was conducted separately for each group, and we provided a 10 min theoretical training about infant basic life support followed by a 45 min practical training using a Laerdal Little Anne QCPR CPR manikin. A practical test in pairs was organized to record the ventilation as performed by the participants, establishing the difference between the efficacious and the non-efficacious ones. Furthermore, we handed out a survey before and after training to evaluate their knowledge. More than 90% of the students completely agreed with the importance of learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques for their professional future. More than half of the sample considered that they perform the rescue breathings with the mouth-to-mouth method better. We observed that through mouth-to-mouth-nose ventilations, the number of effective ventilations was significantly higher than the effective ventilations provided by a self-inflating bag and mask (EffectiveMtoMN 6.42 ± 4.27 vs. EffectiveMask 4.75 ± 3.63 (p = 0.007)), which was the preferred method. In terms of the compression method, hands encircling the chest was preferred by more than 85% of students. Mouth-to-mouth nose ventilation is more efficient than bag-face-mask ventilation in CPR as performed by professional training and physical activity students. This fact must be considered to provide higher-quality training sessions to professional training students.

Efficacy of distance training program for cardiopulmonary resuscitation utilizing smartphone application and home delivery system

Aim of the studyCommunity cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education is important for laypersons. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, with social distancing, conventional face-to-face CPR training was unavailable. We developed a distance learning CPR training course (HEROS-Remote) using a smartphone application that monitors real-time chest compression quality and a home delivery collection system for mannikins. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the HEROS-Remote course by comparing chest compression quality with that of conventional CPR training. MethodsWe applied layperson CPR education with HEROS-Remote and conventional education in Seoul during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both groups underwent a 2-min post-training chest compression test, and we tested non-inferiority. Chest compression depth, rate, complete recoil, and composite chest compression score was measured. Trainees completed a satisfaction survey on CPR education and delivery. The primary outcome was the mean chest compression depth. ResultsA total of 180 trainees were enrolled, with 90 assigned to each training group. Chest compression depth of HEROS-Remote training showed non-inferiority to that of conventional training (67.4 vs. 67.8, p = 0.78), as well as composite chest compression score (92.7 vs. 95.5, p = 0.16). The proportions of adequate chest compression depth, chest compression rate, and chest compressions with complete chest recoil were similar in both training sessions. In the HEROS-Remote training, 90% of the trainees were satisfied with CPR training, and 96% were satisfied with the delivery and found it convenient. ConclusionHEROS-Remote training was non-inferior to conventional CPR training in terms of chest compression quality. Distance learning CPR training using a smartphone application and mannikin delivery had high user satisfaction and was logistically feasible.

The dramatic increase in sudden cardiac deaths and the alarming low survival: A global call to action to improve outcome with the engagement of tertiary education system.

The number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, cause of disability and death, has dramatically increased worldwide, but despite the progress, the incidence of survival does not appear to have increased significantly. Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) remains the principal factor in saving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims. Analyzing the immense efforts produced by states and professional organizations to train people in CPR skills for immediate intervention in the occurrence of a cardiac arrest, the primary global strategy is centered on CPR education and training for schoolchildren. But the rate of CPR training remains low, with wide differences among communities. The concept of CPR training for schoolchildren to increase bystander CPR rates needs to be implemented. We suggest a global call to action for the tertiary education system for CPR learning and training, including all undergraduate students regardless of the degree course, as a possible method to improve the traditional CPR training today centered on the secondary education system. Extending CPR training courses to the university educational system could significantly increase the number of people educated in life-saving maneuvers. The final objective is to improve the survival rate of patients with out-of-hospital primary cardiac arrest, which has dramatically increased worldwide.

Aim of the study: Effective CPR training is important for provision of high-quality bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, the COVID-19 pandemic has hindered conventional face-to-face CPR training. To overcome the limitation, we developed a distance learning CPR training course (HEROS-Remote) that utilized a smartphone app and a delivery-collection system for CPR training manikins. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the HEROS-Remote course by comparing chest compression quality between trainees who participated in the conventional CPR training (C-training) and HEROS-Remote course (R-training). Methods: The non-inferiority trial included adult nonhealthcare providers who applied for CPR training. Both groups underwent 2-minute post-training chest compression test followed by course survey on trainees’ course and delivery system satisfaction. The primary outcome of the study was mean chest compression depth during the 2-minute post-training test. Results: A total of 180 trainees were enrolled with 90 trainees for each training group. There was no statistically significant difference in chest compression depth between R-training and C-training groups (67.4 vs. 67.8, p=0.78) as well as proportion of adequate chest compression depth, chest compression rate, proportion of chest compressions with complete chest recoil and chest compression score (90.8 vs. 92.1, p=0.69; 110.8 vs. 110.4, p=0.60; 89.8 vs. 94.7, p=0.05; 92.7 vs. 95.5, p=0.16, respectively). In the R-training group, 90.0% of the trainees were satisfied with the course, 96% responded that the delivery system was satisfactory and convenient. Conclusion: The R-training course was noninferior to the C-training course. The distance learning CPR training method utilizing smartphone app and mannikin delivery-collection system had high user satisfaction and was logistically feasible.

Interactive Teaching Aid Kit for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure performed on a person experiencing cardiac arrest to manually preserve brain function until spontaneous breathing and blood circulation can be restored. If performed timely and properly, it can improve the survival rate of a person experiencing cardiac arrest. The promotion of CPR has always been an important task for countries around the world. Countries around the world often hold relevant study camps and seminars to improve the public’s awareness of CPR. On the basis of this rationale, this paper proposes an interactive teaching aid kit for CPR that uses a CPR manikin and tutoring software to facilitate CPR learning among trainees. The CPR manikin is equipped with sensors that determine whether the CPR steps are performed correctly. Data from the sensors are sent to the tutoring software through wireless transmission. The software provides video demonstrations and textual instructions concerning the standard CPR procedure. In this software, the interactive interface displays real-time information about the trainee’s CPR process, such as information on the CPR step being performed and the number of chest compression and breaths given. Thus, this teaching aid kit allows trainees to learn CPR without an instructor. This system may enable CPR to become a readily learnable skill for the general population.

Mind Mapping as a New Strategy to Improve Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Learning for Medical Interns

[Objective] Sudden cardiac death (SCD) caused by unexpected cardiovascular arrest remains a major public health threat globally. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a basic but critical first aid skill to rescue patients with sudden cardiac arrest. This study aimed to ascertain whether the mind mapping technique, a note-taking and graphic thinking tool, could improve the learning of CPR among medical interns. [Methods] A total of 79 medical interns rotating in the emergency department in our center were selected as research participants. They were randomly divided into the control group (n=40) and the experimental group (n=39). The control group was trained with traditional PowerPoint (PPT) slide courseware combined with practical operations, while the experimental group was trained with mind mapping technique on the basis of traditional PPT courseware combined with practical operations. The theoretical test, operational assessment, and the survey regarding the satisfaction with the training were conducted between the two groups of interns after training. [Results] Although the interns in both groups mastered the CPR technique successfully with theoretical and operational assessment scores &gt;90 (out of 100), the experimental group performed significantly better in both theoretical tests (score: 96.13±2.47 vs 93.71±4.48, p=0.0041) and operational assessment (score: 94.82±3.22 vs 91.32±3.46, p&lt;0.0001). Moreover, all interns (100%) in the experimental group were satisfied with the CPR training experience, while only 75% of the interns in the control group were satisfied with the training. [Conclusions] Mind maps as a supplementary teaching tool could facilitate CPR learning for medical interns and improve their learning interest.

Effectiveness of the Family and Friends CPR course in learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation in relatives of patients with high cardiovascular risk or who have suffered a cardiovascular event

Introduction: Early, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) increases survival rates in cardiac arrest. Although most cases occur at home and are witnessed, CPR is performed in few of these cases. For this reason, teaching CPR is especially important in relatives of patients with high cardiovascular risk. Therefore, the aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Family and Friends CPR course in the theoretical and practical learning of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in relatives of patients with high cardiovascular risk or who have suffered a cardiovascular event. Materials and methods: We carried out an analytical, quasi-experimental, prospective, before-and-after study. We selected 20 participants during outpatient consultation at the Cardiology Department of the Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Lima, Peru. A theoretical knowledge questionnaire and an adult CPR checklist were used to assess the level of theoretical and practical knowledge, respectively. The theoretical knowledge was measured at three points in time (before, immediately after and one month after the intervention) and the practical skills at two points in time (immediately after and a month after the intervention). Results: The level of theoretical knowledge was low (8.64 ± 2.47) before the intervention, achieving a good level of knowledge immediately after (17.33 ± 2.02) and one month later (16.5 ± 1.91). Furthermore, the medians of the level of practical knowledge were 15 immediately after and one month later, showing that they maintained a good level of practical knowledge. Conclusions: The Family and Friends CPR course was effective in the theoretical and practical learning of CPR in the studied population, and was sustained one month after the intervention.

Tailoring First Aid Courses to Older Adults Participants.

Relevant organizations emphasize the importance of first aid (FA) for older adults due to the increased risk of injuries and sudden illnesses in old age. Even though FA training guidelines have been developed, no program for an FA course adapted for the older adults has been formally adopted in Europe. This study’s objective is to identify older adults’ needs, beliefs, desires, advantages, and possible limitations in connection with FA. This qualitative study used semistructured interviews with 22 laypersons and retired health professionals older than 60 years old. The qualitative content analysis indicated that the major themes elicited by the older adults are motivation to participate in the FA training, older adults’ specific features as a resource or obstacle for participating in FA training, general suggestions, and content suggestions for FA training. Older adults are very differently motivated to participate in FA training due to the heterogeneity of their psychophysical abilities. They need and want to obtain additional knowledge from the field of FA and health protection for which any psychophysical limitations are not as relevant as when learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They want to learn how to recognize emergency situations and more about calling emergency services with the use of modern technology. In addition to cardiopulmonary resuscitation without rescue breaths, they also want to learn about topics related to the treatment of injuries. Those who had practiced FA in their work–life think that they can be a good source to transfer their knowledge to persons from their generation. While planning an FA training course, it has to be taken into consideration that older adults want a short course, adjusted to their varied psychophysical abilities. Due to the wide array of contents they want to learn, it would be reasonable to prepare a selection of different programs for short training courses.

Basic life support training in schools

Older children and adolescents are able to learn and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers in a satisfactory manner. Schools are places where training in basic life support can be carried out. This narrative review was carried out to assess the effectiveness of training in basic life support in schools, analyzing different learning methodology, age groups, and gaining confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a real situation. The search was conducted in the MEDLINE database. Articles published from 01/01/2014 to 12/31/2019, with children under 18 years of age, published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, were selected. Three hundred and nine articles were found, of which 15 met the inclusion criteria in the study. There was great heterogeneity in the methodologies evaluated, making it difficult to compare some studies. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation taught to school children has resulted in the retention of skills and knowledge. There was a direct relationship between age group and quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation can also change the stigma and fear associated with procedures. We conclude that the teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation by different methodologies is effective in the learning of children and adolescents and improves their confidence in doing it. Although older than 12 years of age have a greater ability for depth of compression, other points of basic life support can be developed in younger children.

The Value of Songs for Teaching and Learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Competencies: A Systematic Review

We sought to summarize, in a systematic review, the effectiveness of songs to support learning, performance, and recall of quality characteristics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) compression rate, and depth. We systematically reviewed the literature from eight academic indexes from the fields of medicine, nursing, allied health, and education, from 2014 to 2020 to identify studies that evaluated an intervention of song use during CPR training against control and reported outcomes of compression rate and depth.There were 185 studies initially identified for review, eight met criteria for inclusion and analysis. For the critical outcome of compression depth, a pooled song group (n=446) when compared to a non-song group (n=443) demonstrated higher odds of being in the recommended range (OR 3.47). All studies, however, performed an average compression depth shallower than recommended guidelines in each arm. The available literature, we found, utilized heterogenous methodology and was at high risk of bias. When pooled, there were trends towards improved CPR metric performance in groups who were exposed to songs during treatment, though this only reached significance when groups were tested at >30 days from initial exposure. Findings of lower compression rates in the song groups suggest that song selection should favor beats per minute closer to the midpoint of the 100-120 ideal range to allow for variation when used as mental metronomes.

Is a homemade cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) trainer non-inferior to a commercially available CPR mannequin in teaching high-quality CPR? A non-inferiority randomized control trial

IntroductionStudies demonstrate that feedback devices help students achieve mastery of critical CPR skills and shorten the time from demonstration to competence. CPR feedback devices are costly and may not be available in low resource settings or in the context of online classes. We have developed a homemade feedback enabled CPR trainer. This trainer consists of a lid with two toilet rolls stacked on top. We have shown it is feasible to generate high quality CPR using this trainer, however the ability for this trainer to successfully be used in skill acquisition is unknown.Our main objective was to assess if learning CPR on a homemade toilet paper trainer was non-inferior to a commercially available mannequin when comparing post-training CPR scores. MethodsWe conducted a parallel non-inferiority randomized control trial using a variable block randomization to a 10-min training session on either a toilet paper or commercial mannequin trainer. Primary outcome was mean overall CPR score as determined by high fidelity mannequin software. A sample size of 62 per group was calculated based on a 90% power to assess for the lower limit of a two-sided 95% confidence interval above the non-inferiority limit of 10%. Results125 participants were randomized to the toilet paper (n = 64) or commercial mannequin trainer (n = 61). There was no difference between groups in age, sex, height, weight or previous CPR training. There was an absolute difference of 2% (CI 95% 3.3 to 7.3%) in mean overall CPR score between groups (toilet paper = 82% (SD 15.9%), commercial mannequin = 84% (SD 15%). ConclusionA homemade CPR trainer was non-inferior to a commercially available trainer. This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the use of a homemade, easily accessible trainer for basic compression-only CPR skill acquisition.

Basic life support skills can be improved among certified basic life support instructors

BackgroundA correct visual skill demonstration is important when learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Basic life support (BLS) instructors are expected to master and demonstrate CPR/AED skills correctly. The aim of this study was to evaluate certified BLS instructors’ competencies in demonstrating CPR and the use of an AED. MethodsCertified BLS instructors demonstrated CPR and the use of an AED on a resuscitation manikin. Skills were evaluated using data collected from the manikin and video recordings and compared to resuscitation guidelines. Further, instructors completed questionnaires on resuscitation guidelines and rating of their own CPR/AED skills. ResultsOverall, we analyzed data from 125 instructors. Of all chest compressions, only 22% were within guideline recommendations regarding depth. Instructors performed chest compressions with excessive depth (mean depth 64mm (7.3)) and a mean rate of 115min−1 (10.8). Only 25% of instructors placed the left AED electrode correctly (median distance 7.6cm (5.0;10.5)), while the right AED electrode usually was placed correctly (median distance 2.9cm (1.5;4.0), 85% placed correctly). Nearly half of the instructors failed to state correct answers regarding how to diagnose a cardiac arrest and where to place the AED electrodes. Despite their performance, instructors rated their BLS skills as good. ConclusionCertified BLS instructors’ have poor CPR/AED skills and several important knowledge gaps on CPR/AED guidelines in contrast to instructors’ self-reported skills. This highlights a need for improving BLS instructor education, including continuous faculty development to ensure optimal learning conditions for BLS course participants.

Importance of Immediate Electronic-Based Feedback to Enhance Feedback for First-Time CPR Trainees.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death globally. The recommended clinical management in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases is the immediate initiation of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Training mannequins should be combined with technology that provides students with detailed immediate feedback on the quality of CPR performance. This study aimed to verify the impacts of the type of feedback (basic or detailed) the responders receive from the device while learning CPR and how it influences the quality of their performance and the motivation to improve their skills. The study was conducted at the Medical University of Lublin among 694 multi-professional health students during first aid classes on basic life support (BLS). The students first practiced on an adult mannequin with a basic control panel; afterward, the same mannequin was connected to a laptop, ensuring a detailed record of the performed activities through a projector. Next, the participants expressed their subjective opinion on how the feedback provided during the classes, basic vs. detailed, motivated them to improve the quality of their CPR performance. Additionally, during the classes, the instructor conducted an extended observation of students’ work and behavior. In the students’ opinion, the CPR training with detailed feedback devices provided motivation for learning and improving CPR proficiency than that with a basic control panel. Furthermore, the comments given from devices seemed to be more acceptable to the students, who did not see any bias in the device’s evaluation compared to that of the instructor. Detailed device feedback motivates student health practitioners to learn and improve the overall quality of CPR. The use of mannequins that provide detailed feedback during BLS courses can improve survival in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
